Feel bad for students: SC on plea for evacuation of Indians from Ukraine

The Supreme Court on Thursday told a counsel that the court feels bad for people who are suffering and the Indian students, who are stuck in Ukraine amid the ongoing war, but it cannot direct the Russian President to stop the war.

A plea was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana claiming that the Indian government is only focussing on evacuating students from a certain part of Ukraine.

The counsel submitted that students are stranded in other parts of the war-torn country. The bench, also comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and Hima Kohli, said “What can the court do?… Can we issue a direction to the President of Russia to stop the war?”

The counsel further added that these students should also be evacuated and the government should also provide care for them.

The bench asked the counsel, “Ask, which government to take care of?”

The bench said it has all sympathies with the students in Ukraine, and the Indian government is doing its work. The bench added that it will seek the Attorney General’s view in the matter.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday: “Our Embassy in Ukraine is in continuous touch with Indian nationals in Ukraine… We have requested the support of the Ukrainian authorities in arranging special trains for taking out students from Kharkiv and neighboring areas to the western part of the country.

“We have been coordinating effectively with the countries in the region, including Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova. A large number of Indian nationals have been evacuated from Ukraine in the last few days.

0

Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the Quad leaders will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate along with US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in a Quad Leaders’ virtual meeting.

The four countries have an informal alliance called the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad, that positions itself as being committed to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

“The Leaders will have an opportunity to continue their dialogue after the September 2021 Summit in Washington D.C.,” the ministry said.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has entered the eighth day after Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a military operation.

In the meantime, in a resolution, backed by 141 of its 193 members, the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday deplored in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and demanded that Russia immediately cease its use of force and “completely and unconditionally” withdraw all its troops.

Five countries — Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea, and Syria — voted against the resolution, and 35 abstained.

India had abstained from the vote on the resolution titled ‘On aggression against Ukraine’.

Indian equities trade positive in opening session

0

India’s key indices — S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 — rose marginally in the opening session on Thursday possibly due to some value buying after the recent decline in the indices.

At 9.56 a.m., Sensex was 0.3 percent or 178 points up at 55,647 points, whereas Nifty 0.3 percent or 55 points up at 16,661 points.

Among stocks, Tech Mahindra, IOC, Wipro, HCL Technologies, and BPCL were the top five gainers in the opening session, rallying 3.1 percent, 2.6 percent, 2.6 percent, 2.4 percent, and 2.3 percent, respectively.

Asian Paints, HDFC Life, Ultratech Cement, SBI Life, Eicher motors, on the other hand, were the top five losers, NSE data showed.

“Nifty has corrected 11 percent from the peak. But with FIIs being relentless sellers, further correction cannot be ruled out. Investors may start nibbling at high-quality stocks which have corrected disproportionately,” said V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

Amazon shuts over 60 retail stores, to focus on grocery & fashion shops

0

Amazon has announced to shut down most of its brick-and-mortar storefronts, including Amazon Books, across the US and the UK, as the e-commerce giant aims to shift its focus on opening more fashion and grocery stores.

The retail giant confirmed to ZDNet late on Wednesday that it is shutting over 60 bookstores, Amazon Pop-Ups, and “Amazon 4-star” shops.

The company said it’s still investing in Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Go, and its Amazon Style stores.

“We remain committed to building great, long-term physical retail experiences and technologies,” an Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.

Amazon launched its first physical bookstore in Seattle in 2015, and later expanded brick-and-mortar stores across the US and abroad.

Later, Amazon’s retail footprint expanded with the $13.7 billion expansion of Whole Foods in 2017, along with its own Amazon Fresh grocery stores.

Amazon has also been working on ‘Just Walk Out’ cashierless shopping technology at Amazon Go convenience stores.

In 2018, the company launched Amazon 4-star stores, which sold top-selling items on Amazon.com, as well as items rated four stars or above by online buyers.

Amazon Pop-Ups, the stores featured rotating brands and themes, aimed to give customers a “try-before-you-buy” experience.

The company recently announced the launch of Amazon Style, a retail store focused on fashion, said the report.

In Q4 2021, the company reported its physical retail business generated $4.68 billion, up from $4.02 billion in the year-ago quarter.

AIADMK Theni district committee passes resolution to bring Sasikala back

The Theni district committee of the AIADMK has unanimously passed a resolution at a meeting to bring former interim general secretary of the party V.K. Sasikala back to the party fold.

The meeting also wanted her nephew T.T.V Dhinakaran and his party Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) back.

Held at the farmhouse of AIADMK chief coordinator and former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Wednesday, the meeting was presided over by the Theni district secretary of the party Syed Khan.

Sources in the party, who attended the meeting, told in an interview that when the district committee leaders spoke about reinducting the two, Panneerselvam asked them to pass a resolution on the same, so that it could be taken forward to the party high command.

News had earlier reported that the powerful Thevar community to which both Sasikala and Panneerselvam belong, had been putting pressure on the AIADMK leadership to bring Sasikala back to the party fold.

With a sizeable vote bank in Southern Tamil Nadu, the Thevar community has always been a strong base of the AIADMK. In the recent Urban local body polls, AIADMK had lost heavily in the Southern belt with the party candidates even losing in the homeward of Panneerselvam.

Party Theni district secretary Syed Khan, while speaking to an interview, said: “The AIADMK is a political party which always fights for the people and we want to take the legacy of late leaders M.G.R. and J. Jayalalithaa back to the party and to move forward. As part of this process, we want everyone who has gone out of the party to return. The electoral debacle has several other factors but the reunion of these leaders will give the party the much-needed support base and fillip.”

The passing of the resolution to induct back Sasikala in the presence of the party chief coordinator has raised eyebrows in the political circles of Tamil Nadu.

Dr. R. Padmanabhan, Director of Socio-Economic Development Foundation, a think tank based out of Madurai while speaking to IANS said: “The writing on the wall is clear and Sasikala will soon be back in the AIADMK fold and emerge very powerful. The AIADMK urgently needs a powerful leader and not a dual leadership and this will infuse adrenalin into the veins of cadres giving the party the much-needed fillip. The pressure exerted by the Thevar community is a major reason for this resolution and it is only a matter of time for her to be back into the day-to-day affairs of AIADMK.”

No hostage crisis in Ukraine, says MEA

0

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Thursday clarifying that there was no hostage crisis in Ukraine as the Russian invasion of Kiev entered the seventh day.

In “response to media queries regarding reports of Indian students being held hostage in Ukraine”, Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in the statement: “Our Embassy in Ukraine is in continuous touch with Indian nationals in Ukraine. We note that with the cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities, many students have left Kharkiv yesterday (Wednesday).

“We have not received any reports of any hostage situation regarding any student. We have requested the support of the Ukrainian authorities in arranging special trains for taking out students from Kharkiv and neighboring areas to the western part of the country.

“We have been coordinating effectively with the countries in the region including Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova. A large number of Indian nationals have been evacuated from Ukraine in the last few days.

“We appreciate the help extended by the Ukrainian authorities to make this possible. We thank Ukraine’s western neighbors in receiving Indian nationals and for accommodating them while they waited for flights to take them back home.”

The statement came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they reviewed the situation in Ukraine, especially in the city of Kharkiv where many Indian students are stuck.

They discussed the safe evacuation of the Indian nationals from the conflict areas.

The Academy Award-winning took to Twitter and mentioned that he and two colleagues walked “miles” to the Polish border after abandoning their car on the side of a road, along with a photo from the situation.

Bitcoin now has higher market cap than Russian currency

0

As Russia intensifies its battle to take control of Ukraine, Bitcoin on Wednesday soared to $44,000, pushing the total cryptocurrency market cap to cross $2 trillion.

With the recent gains, Bitcoin now has a higher market cap than the rapidly-declining Russian currency ruble.

Bitcoin has a market cap of approximately $835 billion while the ruble has a market cap of around $626 billion.

The crypto market was last at $2 trillion in August 2021.

In the last week, since the Russia-Ukraine war started, Bitcoin has jumped nearly 14 percent and ethereum 12 percent, according to CoinGecko data.

Terra’s LUNA token had a stratospheric rise, climbing nearly 70 percent during the last week, and is now trading at approximately $94.

Solana’s SOL and another layer 1 tokens like Avalanche’s AVAX and Polkadot’s DOT also responded well, reports CoinDesk.

Similar to volatility, Bitcoin’s trading volume across major exchanges reached the highest level since the December 5 price crash, according to CoinDesk data.

Earlier, the global crypto market lost nearly 10 percent of its value as Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday. Over $200 billion worth of its global market value was wiped out.

The most-hit cryptocurrencies were Ethereum, Cardano, Avalanche, and Polkadot, along with Dogecoin and Shiba Inu.

Some traders, however, expected the price bounce to be short-lived amid geopolitical uncertainty.

Women’s World Cup: Australia’s Gardner tests Covid positive, to miss at least two games

0

Australia suffered a setback ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup in New Zealand with key all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner unavailable for 10 days after testing positive for the Covid-19 virus.

The star all-rounder will miss the first two matches in Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign as she has gone into 10-day isolation here in line with the New Zealand government’s health protocols.

Thus the 24-year-old will not be available for the matches against England (March 5) and Pakistan (March 8). Australia’s third match of the tournament is against New Zealand on March 13 in Wellington, the day after Gardner is due to be released from isolation, cricket.com.au reported on Thursday.

The possible replacements for Gardner, who struck 60 off 32 balls in Australia’s second warm-up match against New Zealand on Tuesday, include pace-bowling all-rounder Annabel Sutherland and fellow spin-bowling all-rounder, Grace Harris, the report said.

She was the only Australian player to test positive for Covid.

“All remaining Australian players and support staff have tested negative following subsequent RATs,” Cricket Australia said in a statement. “(They) will proceed with existing plans to travel to Hamilton this evening ahead of the side’s opening match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup against England on Saturday.”

The World Cup will begin on Friday amidst a renewed surge in daily cases in New Zealand. Daily case numbers of Covid-19 in New Zealand rose beyond 22,000 this week as the country experiences its biggest surge of the virus since the pandemic began.

Twitter may be adding built-in podcasts tab

0

Micro-blogging site Twitter is likely building a tab dedicated to podcasts, as shown in a screenshot posted by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong.

The image shows a microphone icon in the Twitter app’s bottom menu bar, which appears to lead to a page titled “Podcasts”, The Verge reported on Wednesday.

The screenshot does not show any indication of how podcasts could be displayed on the platform or if it will somehow incorporate Spaces, the platform’s audio-only chatrooms.

Right now, live Spaces are stuffed at the top of Twitter feeds, and it would make sense to organize them into a separate tab.

Twitter began branching out to audio when it first launched Spaces in 2020 and dove even deeper into the medium with its acquisition of social podcast platform Breaker, the report said.

Spaces has been an ongoing project for the platform, which recently started letting anyone create chatrooms and allowing all mobile users to record conversations.

Recorded Spaces are already a bit like podcasts, albeit only temporary ones, which only last 30 days.

If a Twitter podcast feature is anything like Spotify or Apple Podcasts, users would be able to choose from and listen to podcasts at their leisure, with no rush to catch a live Spaces broadcast or listen to recordings before time runs out.

NASA’s 1st crewed Artemis moon mission delayed to 2026

0

NASA’s first crewed Artemis mission will see launch no earlier than 2026, the agency has said.

The announcement comes after NASA notified of delays on Artemis 1’s uncrewed flight around the Moon. The agency indicated last week that it would launch no earlier than May, but even that timeline is in doubt, Space.com reported.

“Given the time needed to develop and test the human landing system and NASA’s next-generation spacesuits, we estimate the date for a crewed lunar landing likely to slip to 2026 at the earliest,” NASA Inspector General Paul Martin was quoted as saying during a House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.

He acknowledged that the 2025 deadline that NASA is aiming for doesn’t appear to be feasible.

Martin said there are challenges that need to be faced, “not the least of which would be getting the human landing system certified to operate spacesuits,” along with changes in the agency’s acquisition strategy that is expected to take more time in procuring key technologies “that are not mature”.

These factors, he said, “often point to taking longer and [requiring] development to get there. So 2025 is not impossible, but it seems improbable.”

According to William Russell, the US Government Accountability Office director of contracting and national security acquisitions, the problem is that NASA is seeking to manage “multiple risks simultaneously” while achieving a tight deadline, the report said.

Russell pointed to factors such as the seven-month delay induced by the HLS disputes, a key change in spacesuit development to pivot the work to a contractor instead of in-house work, and cost growth for the Space Launch System rocket and other key infrastructure required to support a human landing.

NASA, for its part, pointed to unanticipated issues that contributed to cost growth and schedule delays, particularly involving the coronavirus pandemic, which has created supply chain hiccups and personnel challenges due to safety protocols.

“Every bit of work that I’ve mentioned is possible because of the people of NASA and our private sector partners,” James Free, the agency’s associate administrator of the exploration systems development mission directorate, was quoted as saying.

Free did not speak directly about timelines for the Artemis 3 crew landing but said more information on costs and timelines will be forthcoming as NASA formulates its next budget. He emphasized his approach, however, is to keep “a realistic schedule and budget”, the report said.

Stopping liquor discounts ‘arbitrary’, vendors move HC against Delhi govt order

0

A group of liquor vendors on Wednesday approached the Delhi High Court challenging the order issued by the city government which prohibited concessions or discounts by the retail licensees on the MRP of alcohol brands.

On February 28, the city government had announced to discontinue the discount policy on the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of liquor in the capital, saying that due to discounts being offered at the liquor stores, the shops were thronged by a large number of people, causing law and order problems and inconvenience to the local people.

The plea filed by five vendors holding valid L7Z licenses, through Advocates Sanjay Abbot, Tanmaya Mehta, and Honey Uppal challenged the order passed by the Department of Excise, Entertainment, and Luxury Tax of the Delhi government.

Clause 3.5.1 of the tender in its last line states “The licensee is free to give concession, rebate or discount on the MRP”, read the plea. It said “For that, the impugned decision of the Respondent completely takes away the Petitioners right to take business decisions with regard to discounts/concessions/rebates which the petitioners were otherwise empowered to take under the new excise policy and tender documents. ‘Clauses’ such as giving discounts formed an essential part of the new excise policy scheme. Hence, the order to discontinue/withdraw an important clause is in complete contradiction to the letter and spirit of the excise policy.”

Liquor shops in Delhi were offering hefty discounts on liquor bottles to exhaust their stock by the end of March when licenses will be renewed.

96.8% adults received first dose of Covid vax, 81.3% second, Centre to SC

0

The Centre on Wednesday informed the Supreme Court that 96.8 percent of India’s adult population have been administered the first dose of the Covid vaccine and 81.3 percent have been administered the second dose.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, submitted before a bench of Justices L. Nageswara Rao and B.R. Gavai that 177,50,86,335 (177.5 crores) total vaccines have been administered.

In the adult population, 96.8 percent of the population (90,92,27,350) has been covered with the first dose, and 81.3 percent of the population (76,35,65,779) has been covered with the second dose. For the population between 15-18 years of age, 74 percent (5,47,94,459) have been covered with the first dose and 37.1 percent (2,74,87,370) with the second dose. The precaution dose numbers for the adult population amount to 2,00,11,377. The figures are based on data collated on February 28.

The top court was hearing a plea by Jacob Puliyel challenging vaccine mandates issued by various state governments and seeking direction to also disclose post-vaccination data regarding adverse events.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing Puliyel, a formermember of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, contended that a person’s fundamental right to not take vaccine cannot be eclipsed by the government only by saying that person not taking vaccine will pose a clear threat to public health.

Bhushan said: “Even, I had Covid. But, I have not taken the vaccine. I have decided not to take the vaccine, come what may.”

He insisted that adverse effects of Covid vaccination are not known, and questioned why governments are issuing vaccine mandates restricting people from entering public spaces by making vaccination mandatory. “If one was infected with Covid (and got cured), that person gets better natural immunity against the infection,” said Bhushan.

At this, Justice Gavai said: “Can we go into this area. We do not possess basic knowledge”. The bench reminded Bhushan that the plea questions whether state governments can take such decisions in connection with the vaccination. It added that science is a matter of opinion and Bhushan may have presented one opinion, but they can be contested.

“Your opinion may not be shared by others,” added the bench.

Justice Rao reiterated: “We are not experts in the medical field. Don’t take us deep into the scientific issues.”

Bhushan added that people are being mandated to take those vaccines, whose phase 3 trial data is not available, and also the material presented to drug control authority is not presented to the public. He said: “Where is the question of informed consent?”

Bhushan asked, just because the company which had submitted data to the regulator asks the data not to be disclosed, it cannot be disclosed.

He said there is no study canvassing on long-term effects of vaccination on health and pointed out that vaccines are being made mandatory for child care institutions, and ICSE board made it mandatory for children to sit in the exams. He pressed that the court must exercise its power of judicial review upon any such arbitrary directive and strike down such vaccine mandates.

Concluding the arguments, Bhushan said the petition has three prayers: one on vaccine mandates, on disclosure of data on clinical trials, and the need to revamp the system to report adverse events.

Bhati submitted that the Centre has taken a decision not to make vaccination mandatory and against the backdrop of vaccination data, she added that the whole aspect of challenging the vaccination has paled into insignificance.

At this, the bench pointed out that Bhushan has not challenged the vaccination but he has challenged mandatory vaccination.

The hearing in the matter will continue next week.

On January 31, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, informed the top court that nobody is losing jobs due to non-vaccination.

Naidu calls for imparting CPR training to youth

Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday urged the schools, local bodies, panchayats, and NGOs to organize regular camps on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to acquaint the youngsters with the life-saving procedure.

The training must also form a part of the high school or college curriculum, Naidu added.

CPR is a lifesaving technique that is useful in many emergencies, such as a heart attack or near drowning, in which breathing or heartbeat can be brought back by pressing the chest of the person with hard and fast chest compressions to get the heartbeat re-started.

At an awareness program conducted at Swarna Bharat Trust, Vijayawada, where a demonstration was showcased on CPR and the use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) by doctors from the Indian Resuscitation Council Federation (IRCF), Naidu stressed the importance of knowing these life-saving techniques.

Lauding the IRCF for their efforts in imparting training in basic life support, comprehensive cardiac life support, and pediatric advanced life support courses, the Vice-President called upon students from medical colleges to visit nearby schools and villages to spread awareness on CPR and the use of AED.

He also said that performing CPR in time can help in emergency situations where immediate medical help is not available.

Naidu further suggested that private institutions, apartment complexes, and resident welfare associations must keep an AED device ready at hand and train their members with the technique of CPR. “If people know how to perform CPR, they can save many lives”, he said.

Former Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh Mandali Buddha Prasad, Chairman of the Indian Resuscitation Council Federation, members of IRCF, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
