AMU doctors attacked by patient kin

0

Relatives of a suspected Covid-19 patient, who was admitted at the AMU medical college casualty with respiratory distress, allegedly manhandled and assaulted doctors and staff after they were informed of the non-availability of the ventilator at the ICU in the hospital.

Later, the patient Haseena Bano, 55, died in the hospital on Monday.

An FIR was registered and all the four relatives of the deceased, who allegedly manhandled the doctors and staff, were arrested by the police later on Monday.

Hamza Malik, the president of the Resident Doctors’ Association, said the patient was admitted at 1.30 p.m. with a history of breathlessness and dry cough for the past two-three days.

After a few hours, the patient’s oxygen level suddenly started dipping but as a ventilator was not available in the trauma ward at that time, the relatives were informed and advised to shift the patient to some other hospital.

“As soon as we explained this to the patient’s attendants, they started abusing us and became physically violent. They also gave us life threats and made an attempt to tear the PPE of one of the women doctors.

“One of the patient attendants tried to throw an oxygen cylinder at us with the intention to kill but somehow we managed to save ourselves,” she said.

Civil Lines circle officer, Anil Samaniya, said all four accused have been arrested under section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any person being a public servant in the execution of his duty as such public servant), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC on the basis of a complaint filed by doctors.

He said, two of them were given bail to carry out the funeral of the deceased while the other two will be produced in court.

Apple may bring touch-integrated OLED for iPhones in 2021

0

Apple is reportedly planning to bring touch-integrated OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays on all iPhone models that will be launched next year.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has placed orders for the touch-integrated OLED display panels, reports South Korea-based ET News.

The OLED panels, instead of having touch sensor films, come with inbuilt touch sensors, which will make smartphones thinner. In addition, the cost of the devices will decrease.

As per the report, the new touch-integrated OLEDs will be supplied by Samsung Display.

The iPhone maker is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series in September which would include two premium variants.

The iPhone 12 Pro will come in 6.1-inch or 6.7-inch sizes. The rear camera module on the device will house four sensors with a LiDAR scanner which was introduced in the recently launched Apple iPad Pro.

All four iPhone models are expected to feature OLED displays and 5G support, as famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously claimed.

de Gea not in a position to be defended, says Ferdinand

0

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has stated that current goalkeeper David de Gea has made glaring errors in big matches and that is why even the most ardent United fans, like himself, cannot defend him amid the criticism that he is receiving.

The Spaniard was guilty of letting two goals in on either side of the half-time against Chelsea — one from Olivier Giroud and another from Mason Mount as Chelsea thumped Manchester United 3-1 last Sunday to secure a place in the FA Cup final.

“When people make mistakes, they’re open to criticism. That’s just natural, that is just how football is,” Ferdinand told BT Sport as per Daily Mail.

“David de Gea is no exception. He’s made mistakes, glaring mistakes in some big games, notably the game against Chelsea in the semi-final at Wembley.

“Yes, he should be doing better. I have played with David, he’s his own biggest critic.

“He’ll be sitting at home mulling over these, going through the situations and making sure that he tries to get rid of these mistakes that he is committing at the moment.

“I watched these games with my boys at home and I was flabbergasted to see them go past David because he’s a top-drawer goalkeeper.

“It is disappointing really, as a Manchester United fan you want to defend your player but at the moment he is not in a position to be defended in that respect,” he added.

Earlier, Newcastle legend and football pundit Alan Shearer had urged Manchester United to bring back Dean Henderson from Sheffield United and make him their number one goalkeeper.

“I think it’s time (to drop De Gea). It keeps happening,” Shearer said while speaking to BBC One.

“I think you bring Henderson back when you think he’s going to be number one. He has to bring him back as number one otherwise keep him out on loan for experience, but, has that time come? Yes, I think it has.”

Vicky Kaushal: I miss machines

Bollywood heartthrob Vicky Kaushal shared a throwback photograph of himself at a gym and said that he misses machines.

Vicky’s Instagram image showed him flaunting his perfectly-chiseled body.

The actor completed his look with black basketball shorts, a baseball cap, and sneakers. In the backdrop, gym equipment can be seen as the “Manmarziyaan” actor is posing in front of a large mirror.

Vicky was last seen in Bhanu Pratap Singh’s “Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship”.

Next, he will bring alive the story of revolutionary Udham Singh, who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 by assassinating General Michael O’Dwyer, who was lieutenant governor of Punjab from 1913 to 1919 and endorsed the action of General Reginald Dyer responsible for killing hundreds of people at a peaceful gathering.

Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder, and hanged in July 1940.

Amazon to run Prime Day in India on August 6-7

0

E-commerce giant Amazon has confirmed that it will run its Prime Day annual shopping festival in India on August 6-7, a bit later than usual.

Last year, the sales holiday was conducted in mid-July, but the pandemic this year has disrupted its schedule as the company said that the rollout of the global event for other participating markets will take place even later.

According to a report in TechCrunch on Tuesday, this will be the first time that Prime Day will not run on the same day globally.

The Prime Day dates for other participating markets are still not known.

The event in India which promises deals and savings, including those on entertainment offerings, will start on August 6 at midnight and run until August 7.

“Over the last five years, Prime Day has become a special celebration and time for Prime members to shop incredible deals for themselves and for friends and family — and it’s something we look forward to every year,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.

“This year we’ll be holding Prime Day later than usual while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and selling partners.

“We are excited Prime members in India will see savings on August 6-7, and that members all around the world will experience Prime Day later this year. We look forward to sharing more details soon,” the spokesperson added.

Glenmark slams allegations on Fabiflu as careless, unsubstantiated

0

In a strong rebuttal to the drug regulator, Glenmark Pharma said it has been at the receiving end of careless, unsubstantiated allegations that are devoid of merits related to COVID drug, Fabiflu.

In a reply to V.G. Somani, Directorate General of Health Services, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, Glenmark has responded to allegations made in the representation by an unnamed Member of Parliament.

Glenmark said it is “dismayed” by the allegations as it brought an oral anti-viral agent in less than 3 months, being the first and only company to conduct a robust 150-patient randomized controlled trial and launching the drug at an affordable price.

“Glenmark has been at the receiving end of such careless, unsubstantiated allegations that are devoid of merits whatsoever as amply demonstrated above”, it said.

On the concern raised by the MP on unaffordability due to high price, Glenmark said Compared to other therapies approved for emergency use in COVID-19, FabiFlu is much more economical and an effective treatment option.

Further, given that Favipiravir is an oral therapy, patients can be treated on an out-patient basis without incurring additional hospitalization expenses, unlike other approved drugs that are injectable and hence require administration at hospitals.

Favipiravir in India when launched was at the lowest market cost (Rs 103/tab) as compared to the cost of Favipiravir in other countries where it was approved.

Despite investing significantly throughout the process of manufacturing, Glenmark has managed to keep the pricing of Favipiravir lower as compared to the price of Favipiravir in other countries.

Subsequently, on July 13, Glenmark reduced the price of FabiFlu to Rs 75 per tablet. The price reduction was made possible through our efforts to obtain better yield and better scale, and with both API and formulations manufactured at Glenmark’s own facilities in India.

Today, Favipiravir is a part of several state government protocols and thousands of COVID-19 patients have benefited from the prescription of the product, the company said.

There is an allegation of misleading/false claims that Favipiravir is effective in COVID-19 patients with comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension as Phase 3 clinical trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy in these co-morbidities.

In its response, Glenmark said the alleged statement pertaining to co-morbidity in the press release dated June 20 was not derived from or alluded to Glenmark’s ongoing Phase 3 clinical trial. On the contrary, the reference to comorbidity was clearly based on data from the Japanese registry — the largest collection of real-world evidence on the clinical use of Favipiravir in COVID-19.

“In fact what is surprising is that the allegation of a false claim is being made that when Glenmark, being a responsible corporate citizen, explicitly referenced upfront the Japanese registry, and at no point linked it to our India Phase 3 clinical trial,” it said.

“In view of the above, it is clear that Glenmark’s communication at the launch of the said Product has been completely misread and/or quoted out of context which is harming our reputation,” Glenmark said.

There is also an allegation that Favipiravir is not tested as monotherapy in Phase 3 clinical trial in India. “At the outset, Glenmark denies having made any such claim at any point in time that “Favipiravir alone” is effective in the treatment of Covid-19 patients with mild to moderate disease,” it said.

In the light of the pandemic, in all COVID-19 trials being proposed/conducted across India, all patients receive standard supportive care as per the guidance of Health Ministry as giving the patients placebo alone in such a situation would be unethical as it would deprive the patients of any care at all.

Globally, a similar approach, including standard supportive care is adopted in clinical trials that are being conducted to consider treatment options for COVID-19 patients.

Similarly, in the Glenmark Study, as per the guidelines issued by ICMR and Health Ministry, patients with mild to moderate COVID 19 symptoms were treated with Favipiravir plus recommended standard supportive care versus standard supportive care alone.

“It is pertinent to note that the standard supportive care in Glenmark Study did not include HCQ or any other anti-viral drug. Consequently, since both arms of the Glenmark Study received standard supportive care under this design, any advantage observed in the treatment arm can solely be attributed to the administration of Favipiravir,” Glenmark rebutted.

1st manned round-trip to Mars could take about 2 years: NASA

0

Stressing that human exploration of Mars is on the horizon, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has said that the agency is planning its first round-trip voyage to Mars to take about two years during which the crew could spend about a month on the Martian surface.

The US space agency wants to send humans to Mars as early as the 2030s.

NASA will use advanced propulsion systems to enable a faster journey to the Red Planet while limiting radiation exposure for its astronauts and other mission risks, Bridenstine said on Monday while participating in a discussion with the Space Foundation, a non-profit organization.

“Our preferred launch window will give the crew about 30 days on the Martian surface, which is ample time to search for life on another world,” he said.

“Other options could require the crew to be on the surface for more than a year and away from Earth for as long as three years, but it will be a long time before we have the funding, technology, supplies, and capabilities to sustain such a mission,” said Bridenstine.

NASA plans to return humans to the Moon by 2024 under the Artemis programme.

“Our sights remain set on sending humans to Mars and the Artemis program will give us the experience living on another world closer to home,” the NASA Administrator said.

“Artemis missions on and around the Moon will help us make our next giant leap while robots like the Perseverance rover pave the way for our first human explorers to Mars,” he added.

NASA is targeting July 30 for the launch of the Perseverance Mars rover from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Among the investigations onboard, the rover will carry two that will support future crewed missions to the fourth planet — one to produce oxygen from the Martian atmosphere and another to aid in the development of weather forecasting.

The mission will also use new terrain navigation and landing technologies as well as study how a potential spacesuit material is affected by the Martian environment, Bridenstine noted.

Current hockey teams best in terms of fitness & co-ordination: Bharat

0

Former Indian goalkeeper Bharat Chetri believes both the current men’s and women’s hockey teams have some of the best players in the world, adding that they have the ability to end the medal drought at next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.

“We have the best players in the world, and in my opinion, both the teams are quite similar in their composition – given we have both Savita and PR Sreejesh as our experienced goalkeepers, and then a steady defense ahead of them,” Bharat was quoted as saying by Hockey India.

“Midfield and attack for both the teams are quite potent, lively, efficient, and effective, with the right mixture of youth and experience in our ranks. Having worked with both the teams and watched them from close quarters, I feel the current teams are probably the best in terms of their fitness, their style of play, and the coordination.

“When I had seen their coordination on and off the field, it makes me feel so happy because somehow I felt that this level of coordination was something that was lacking in our teams of the past which perhaps was one of the reasons we have been unable to perform exceptionally on occasions,” he added.

According to the former Indian captain, since the London Olympics, both the teams have made a considerable amount of improvement in their games.

“We always had the talent and the opportunity to take that step forward as a team, but the other teams were ahead of us in their respective Olympic processes, and I think we always ended up lacking that authority and edge in big matches.

“Over the past eight years since the London Olympics, I think there has been considerable improvement in our game, and the credit for that also needs to go to all the players and coaches who have been involved, and also Hockey India for doing a great job in providing the best facilities and infrastructure to its athletes to train and stay during their national camps, and play on tours abroad.

He said during his playing days, it was his dream to help his team win an Olympic medal, but now, as a fan of Indian hockey, he wants the current teams to make a podium finish in Tokyo.

Indian men’s hockey team last won a gold medal in Hockey in 1980 in Moscow Olympics. Since then, they have participated in eight Olympic editions but have failed to make a podium finish. On the other hand, the Indian eves have never been able to win a medal in the prestigious quadrennial event.

“It is not just a dream, it is a belief which I have seen in our current players also during the times that I have spent with them as the goalkeeping or assistant coach,” said Bharat.

“I think the talent that we have in our ranks, along with the top fitness levels, we really have a good chance to perform at our best under the guidance of both the respective chief coaches,” he added.

Microsoft to shift Minecraft workloads from AWS Cloud to Azure

0

Popular video game Minecraft which has over 126 million monthly users globally will stop using Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and will shift its workloads to Azure Cloud from its parent company Microsoft.

According to a report in CNBC, the “shift represents an obvious way for Microsoft to cut back on payments to one of its toughest competitors and promote its own product”.

Azure is growing faster than many other Microsoft offerings. Most of its consumer and commercial properties, including the video conferencing app Teams, now run on Azure Cloud.

Microsoft would also “migrate LinkedIn from its own dedicated data centers to Azure,” according to the report on Monday.

Minecraft has topped 200 million sales, with 126 million people playing the game monthly. The game has seen a huge increase in use since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Over the last month, the game has seen an increase of 25 percent in new players, with a 40 percent rise in multiplayer sessions specifically.

When Microsoft acquired Mojang (the game developer behind Minecraft) for $2.5 billion in 2014, the game had sold more than 50 million copies across PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and other platforms.

The sandbox game hit the 100 million mark in 2016, meaning the growth of the game has actually increased in the last four years in comparison to the first five years after it launched in November 2011, according to the company.

Minecraft developer Mojang also announced a new name for the studio in celebration of the 11th anniversary of Minecraft. The new name for the developer is Mojang Studios.

“Mojang Studios has used AWS in the past, but we’ve been migrating all cloud services to Azure over the last few years,” a Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.

“We’ll be fully transitioned to Azure by the end of the year,” the spokesperson added.

Accept ICC’s decision to postpone T20 WC: Cricket Australia

0

Cricket Australia has welcomed the decision of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to postpone the Men’s T20 World Cup amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We accept the ICC’s decision to postpone the T20 World Cup in Australia. It was a decision made with the safety and well-being of fans, players, officials, and staff in mind,” Nick Hockley, the interim chief executive of Cricket Australia and chief executive of the T20 World Cup 2020, said in a statement.

The ICC, having dilly-dallied over the last couple of months, on Monday finally announced that the 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia from October 18 to November 15 has been postponed.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting sporting tournaments across the globe and cricket is not immune,” said Hockley.

“The complexities and risks around hosting a 16-team international event in October in the current environment ultimately proved sufficient for the ICC to postpone the event.”

Australia and India remain hosts of the next two events, but which country hosts which year is still to be determined in order to allow the ICC to continue to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increase the chance of staging two T20 World Cups.

Hockley expressed confidence that Australia would host an outstanding tournament when a revised date is set.

“A lot of hard work has gone into hosting the tournament in Australia this year and I would like to thank everyone involved for their passion and commitment.

“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year will forever be remembered as a groundbreaking moment in Australian sport, and I have no doubt the men’s edition will also be a spectacular event.

“We are confident that with this decision, we will give ourselves the best chance to safely welcome fans into the outstanding venues across the country to enjoy watching the world’s best men’s cricketers compete in this major global event in either 2021 or 2022,” he added.

COVID-19: No new positive cases since July 13, says NBA

0

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has said that no new positive COVID-19 cases have been uncovered in the latest rounds of testing.

“Of the 346 players tested for COVID-19 on the NBA campus since test results were last announced on July 13, zero have returned confirmed positive tests,” NBA said.

“In the event that a player on the NBA campus returns a confirmed positive test in the future, he will be isolated until he is cleared for leaving isolation under the rules established by the NBA and the Players Association,” it added.

In a previous update, it had said two of the 322 players who had arrived at the campus since July 7 had tested positive.

The 2019-20 NBA season is slated to resume on July 30 at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida without spectators.

From July 22-28, each participating team will play three inter-squad scrimmages in final preparation for the season restart. Meanwhile, the NBA has also announced the restart rosters for the 22 teams.

Pandemic will make ‘The Walking Dead’ film better: Robert Kirkman

“The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman feels the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will make an upcoming Rick Grimes spin-off film even better.

During a recent panel discussion, Kirkman spoke about the film’s progress.

“There’s tons of stuff going on behind the scenes. I don’t want anyone to think that we’re just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end. I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better. I think the Rick Grimes movie is chief among them because we’re getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it’s perfect,” he said.

“The Walking Dead” film has been in the pipeline for two years, ever since actor Andrew Lincoln left the role of Rick Grimes on the TV show. The film is planned to be the first of a trilogy, reports radiotimes.com.

Oil companies hold Diesel, petrol prices again

0

A day after diesel prices increased to extend its gain over petrol in Delhi, oil marketing companies decided to keep the pump prices of the two petroleum products unchanged on Tuesday.

Accordingly, diesel continues to be priced at Rs 81.64 per liter in the capital, while petrol has maintained steady levels at Rs 80.43 a liter.

Oil companies had raised diesel prices marginally by 12 paise on Monday while keeping petrol prices unchanged. Petrol prices had maintained the same level of Rs 80.43 a liter since June 29 when its pump price rose marginally by 5 paise over previous days’ price.

The unexpected rise in diesel prices despite slower demand has put the transport sector at a big disadvantage as rising fuel cost has further shrunk its margins.

With the hikes in diesel prices, the gap between the two auto fuels has further widened in the national capital. Last month, diesel prices overtook that of petrol in Delhi, in an unprecedented development.

Along with the Capital, petrol and diesel prices also remained unchanged in other metro cities as well.

Oil companies began a daily revision of the two auto fuels from June 7 after keeping the price unchanged for the last 82 days during the Covid-19 related lockdown. Since then petrol and diesel prices have increased by Rs 9.5 and Rs 11.5 per liter respectively.

Chinese Covid vax produces immune response in phase 2 trial

0

A phase 2 trial of a Covid-19 vaccine candidate conducted in China has found that the vaccine is safe and induces an immune response, according to a new study published in the journal The Lancet.

This comes barely 24 hours after on Monday The Lancet only published that a Covid-19 vaccine developed by scientists at the Oxford University produces strong immune responses in both parts of the immune system, showed results of Phase I/II trial.

The results from the Chinese trial provide data from a wider group of participants than the phase 1 trial, which was published in May. Phase 1 trial involved 108 healthy adults and it demonstrated promising results.

“The phase 2 trial adds further evidence on safety and immunogenicity in a large population than the phase 1 trial. This is an important step in evaluating this early-stage experimental vaccine and phase 3 trials are now underway,” said study researcher Feng-Cai Zhu, Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China.

The Ad5 vectored vaccine in this trial uses a weakened human common cold virus (adenovirus, which infects human cells readily but is incapable of causing disease) to deliver genetic material that codes for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein to the cells.

These cells then produce the spike protein and travel to the lymph nodes where the immune system creates antibodies that will recognize that spike protein and fight off the coronavirus.

According to the researchers, 508 participants took part in the trial of the new vaccine. Of these, 253 received a high dose of the vaccine, 129 received a low dose, and 126 received a placebo.

Approximately two-thirds of participants were aged 18-44 years, with a quarter aged 45-54 years, and 13 percent aged 55 years or older

Participants were monitored for immediate adverse reactions for 30 minutes after injection and were followed for any injection-site or systemic adverse reactions within 14- and 28-days post-vaccination.

The trial found that 95 percent of participants in the high dose group and 91 percent of the recipients in the low dose group showed either T cell or antibody immune responses at day 28 post-vaccination.

The vaccine-induced a neutralizing antibody response in 59 percent and 47 percent of participants, and binding antibody response in 96 percent of participants, in the high and low dose groups, respectively, by day 28.

The participants in the placebo group showed no antibody increase from baseline.

“Since elderly individuals face a high risk of serious illness and even death associated with COVID-19 infection, they are an important target population for a COVID-19 vaccine,” said Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology.

“It is possible that an additional dose may be needed in order to induce a stronger immune response in the elderly population, but further research is underway to evaluate this,” Chen added.

The authors noted that the trial was conducted in Wuhan, China, and the baseline immunity is representative of Chinese adults at that time, but other countries may have different rates of immunity which should be considered.

Chhetri urges women’s team to start preparations for AFC Asian Cup 2022

0

India men’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri has urged the women’s team to leave no stone unturned and start preparing from now itself for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup scheduled to be held in India in 2022.

In June this year, AFC granted India the right to host the coveted continental tournament. This makes it the second major women’s tournament to be held in India in the space of two years after the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2021.

“It is an amazing opportunity that they have — to play in such a high-level tournament. These are the levels where you want to be, playing the best in the continent,” Chhetri, who holds the distinction of being the only Indian player to have appeared in two different editions of an Asian Cup, said.

“I’d like to urge all of them to start preparing for the tournament from now on itself. The last thing you want to do is feel regret once you start playing the tournament.

“Look into every small aspect of your game and try to improve it – your touch, speed, saving ability, shooting, burning those extra body fats – the process needs to start from right now,” he added.

Having faced some of the top Asian oppositions in the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 and 2019 respectively, Chhetri feels that it is a unique opportunity for every player.

“It’s such a great opportunity to play against some top opposition from Asia. That is why it is even more important to start preparing from now,” Chhetri said.

“Once you have taken every step and prepared yourself in every manner possible, make sure that you enjoy the tournament once you start playing it. It’s not every day that you play on the continental stage, and it’s important for you to enjoy the moment.

“The pressure will always be there but it’s important to enjoy it because football is all about being happy. I’d be more than happy to watch you all from the stands, once the tournament starts,” he added.
