India all-rounder Vijay Shankar on Thursday revealed that one day before the high voltage clash between India and Pakistan in Manchester, a Pakistani fan tried to rile up him and his teammates.

Talking on Bharat Army podcast, Shankar recalled that he had gone for coffee with some of his teammates one day before the match when Pakistani fans came and started abusing them.

“Few of us players had gone out for coffee one day before the game when a Pakistan fan came up to us and he was literally abusing us. So that was my first experience of an India-Pakistan game,” Shankar said on the Bharat Army Podcast.

“We just had to take it. He was abusing us and recording everything, so we couldn’t react. All we could do was sit and watch what he was doing,” Shankar added.

Vijay Shankar may have only featured in 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is for India, but the 29-year-old made an immediate impact on his World Cup debut game against Pakistan in Manchester last year.

“So one day before the game, they told me, be prepared, you’ll be playing. And I was like, ‘OK.'” Vijay Shankar said on The Bharat Army’s podcast.

Shankar, who was slotted in the playing XI, to replace the injured Shikhar Dhawan made a handy contribution with the bat, scoring 15 runs in as many balls as India posted a mammoth total of 336 for 5 in 50 overs.

In the marque clash held on June 16, Shankar became the third bowler in the ODI World Cup history to scalp a wicket off the very first ball he bowled.

A day after the Uttar Pradesh child rights body slapped a notice on Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress leader slammed back saying she is “Indira Gandhi’s granddaughter” and nothing will stop her from telling the truth.

The UP State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (UPSCPCR) on Thursday sent a notice to Gandhi regarding her Facebook post in which she criticized the Kanpur shelter home incident where 57 girls tested positive for COVID.

Priyanka Gandhi also said that the government was wasting time threatening her as they would not have much of an effect on her.

In a series of tweets in Hindi, the Congress’ eastern Uttar Pradesh in-charge said, “My duty as a public servant is to the people of UP, and that duty is to put the truth before them. And not to peddle any government propaganda. The UP government is wasting its time by threatening me…”

“Do whatever you want to do. I will keep bringing the truth to the fore. I am the granddaughter of Indira Gandhi, not an informal BJP spokesperson from an opposition party,” she said in another tweet.

The Commission has asked the Congress leader to issue a corrigendum to her post within three days or face action under the Child Protection Act (Section 13).

The notice sent by Chairman of the Commission, Vishesh Gupta, said that the UPSCPCR had taken suo-moto cognizance of her post in which she had compared the Kanpur shelter home to the Muzaffarpur (Bihar) shelter home incident.

Gupta said that while 57 girls had tested positive for coronavirus and were being treated as per the protocols, the report that one of the girls had tested positive for HIV was also baseless and wrong.

Gupta further said that comparing the Kanpur incident with Deoria in UP and Muzaffarpur in Bihar was completely “baseless and unjustified”.

“Two girls were already pregnant when they were brought to the shelter home a few months ago and it was wrong to insinuate any sexual exploitation in the shelter home,” the letter added.

The letter further said that Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks on social media have caused considerable anguish to the concerned inmates.

Earlier this week, the District Magistrate of Agra, Prabhu Narain Singh, had asked Priyanka Gandhi to apologize for her post in which she had stated that 28 deaths had taken place in Agra within 48 hours.

The Congress leader has been critical of the state government in the recent past as she has highlighted the issue of irregularities in the teacher recruitment examination, handling of migrant workers, and others. She had also locked horns with the state government in mid-May over the issue of providing 1,000 buses to the state government for transporting the stranded migrants.

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will be a game-changer for Pakistan’s southwest Balochistan province, according to experts.

The observation was made by speakers at a webinar on “Security and Development in Balochistan: Existing Dynamics and Way Ahead” on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency.

Organized by the prominent Islamabad-based think-tank Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI), the webinar discussed bringing peace, prosperity, and development in Balochistan by empowering the Baloch people through development projects and governance reforms.

Speaking at the event, Rafiullah Kakar, a development and policy expert from Balochistan, said that CPEC has the potential to be the game-changer for Balochistan to uplift the underdeveloped areas and sectors of the province.

Kakar said that the benefit of the multi-billion-dollar project has yet to reach the people of Balochistan in the areas where CPEC projects are still under the process of completion, adding that the Pakistani government should focus on completing the projects in the sooner possible manner to benefit the province and its poor population.

Expressing his views at the webinar, Sanaullah Baloch, a member of the provincial assembly, said that the potential of CPEC ought to be realized “as a way to win the hearts of the common Baloch people”, as it will eventually bring prosperity to the province.

He also termed the project a golden opportunity to address the issues of the people of the poor areas of Balochistan to let them benefit from employment and other financial opportunities offered by CPEC.

Raashid Wali Janjua, acting president of the IPRI, told the audience of the webinar that Balochistan is a province with tremendous strategic and resource potential.

The largely unexplored mineral-rich province with a large coastal belt holds tremendous promise for national development as well as strategic connectivity with regional countries, through land and sea routes.

The CPEC is a flagship $60 billion projects of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative that aims to connect Asia, Africa, and Europe through a vast network of highways, rail lines, and sea lanes.

The multi-billion-dollar corridor connects the Chinese city of Kashgar with Pakistan’s Gwadar port on the Arabian Sea.

An Indian-American entrepreneur, who was on the board of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), has been nominated by President Donald Trump to be a director of the reconstituted US International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC).

The nomination of Deven J Parekh to a three-year term was announced by the White House on Thursday.

He is a managing director at the investment company, Insight Partners.

hen his nomination is approved by the Senate, he will join Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on the IDFC board.

Parekh was appointed to the OPIC board of directors by former President Barack Obama.

The OPIC was reconstituted by Trump as the IDFC to widen its mission to promote international development through private sector businesses, especially small businesses, in developing nations in order to further US foreign policy objectives while generating returns for the US.

The BJP on Friday continued with its attacks against Congress interim Chief Sonia Gandhi on the issue of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) receiving donations from the Chinese Embassy here, as ruling party president J. P. Nadda accused her of diverting the money of the citizens during the UPA rule into a family-run foundation.

Nadda said it was not only brazen fraud but a big betrayal to the citizens of the country. While targetting Sonia Gandhi, he said one family’s hunger for wealth has cost this nation immensely and demanded Congress’ imperial dynasty to apologize.

“The PMNRF (Prime Minister National Relief Fund), meant to help people in distress, was donating money to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in UPA years. Who sat on the PMNRF board? Sonia Gandhi. Who chairs RGF (Rajiv Gandhi Foundation)? Sonia Gandhi. Totally reprehensible, disregarding ethics, processes, and not bothering about transparency,” Nadda said in a series of tweets.

He said, “People of India donated their hard-earned money to the PMNRF to help their fellow citizens in need. To divert this public money into a family-run foundation is not only a brazen fraud but also a big betrayal of the people of India.”

While attacking the Gandhi family, the BJP President said, “One family’s hunger for wealth has cost the nation immensely. If only they have devoted their energies towards a more constructive agenda. The Congress’ Imperial Dynasty needs to apologize to the unchecked loot for self-gains.”

On Thursday, a controversy erupted after a startling revelation that the government of the Peoples Republic of China and the Chinese Embassy in India has been funding the RGF led by Sonia Gandhi. She is the Chairperson of the RGF, and its board includes former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among others.

However, the Congress responded to the BJP’s allegations and said, “the BJP should stop living in 2005” and alleged that the ruling party is adopting “diversionary tactics” to avoid answering questions on the Chinese transgressions in Ladakh.

On Thursday evening, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Please stop living in 2005 and start answering questions in 2020”. Firing a salvo at the BJP, Surjewala asked: “Why is the government mum about the Chinese presence in the eastern Ladakh area? In the national interest, the nation wants to know the answer to these questions instead of diversionary tactics of the present BJP government.”

Surjewala said, “I can ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, is it not true that the only Chief Minister (as Gujarat CM) who visited China four times is none less than Prime Minister Modi, the only Prime Minister who visited China five times is Prime Minister Modi, the only Prime Minister who called the Chinese premier three times is Prime Minister Modi.”

Despite the consistent execution of the multi-dimensional COVID-19 containment strategy, the daily tally of new cases and death figures shows no signs of decline.

Till Friday morning, Agra reported two deaths and 11 fresh cases. The total number of deaths now stands at 84, while the total number of cases has gone up to 1,177. Of these, 984 have recovered and been discharged.

The S.N. Medical College management has now constituted a committee of five senior doctors to focus on the vulnerable group, after a random survey revealed that a majority of deaths were those of the elderly, with comorbidities. The death audit of some cases brought out the fact that in many cases patients died within 48 hours of being admitted to the COVID hospital.

This revelation had led to a Twitter duel between the Agra District Magistrate and the Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The district health department has now decided to opt for a daily audit of deaths, to find out the reasons. This initiative will help control the death rate, the officials hoped.

The district administration is clearly alarmed by the rising graph of COVID-related deaths, after the lockdown was lifted on June 1. According to a revised strategy, information on all serious cases in private nursing homes will be collected on a daily basis.

The S.N. Medical College, where COVID patients are admitted to a special ward, will now brief family members, twice a day, the progress, and the state of health of the patients. A local COVID helpline will bridge the communication gap, doctors said.

Meanwhile, the district administration has announced that there would be no Shiva temple parikrama and fairs, in the holy month of Shravan beginning July 5. The annual Goverdhan Mela, which attracts more than a crore devotees, has already been canceled.

In Mathura, there were 15 fresh cases, including an SDM who has been admitted to the district hospital. With five new cases, Firozabad’s tally has gone up to 503.

The US Federal Reserve Board has voted to require large banks to preserve capital by suspending share repurchases and capping dividend payments in the third quarter of this year after the latest round of stress tests and additional sensitivity analyses related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In aggregate, loan losses for the 34 banks ranged from $560 billion to $700 billion in the sensitivity analysis and aggregate capital ratios declined from 12.0 percent in the fourth quarter of 2019 to between 9.5 percent and 7.7 percent under the hypothetical downside scenarios,” the board said in a statement on Thursday after the vote.

Under the so-called U- and W-shaped recession scenarios for the US economy, “most firms remain well-capitalized but several would approach minimum capital levels”, the statement said, mentioning that the central bank took several actions following its stress tests to ensure large banks remain resilient despite the economic uncertainty from COVID-19, reports Xinhua news agency.

“For the third quarter of this year, the Board is requiring large banks to preserve capital by suspending share repurchases, capping dividend payments, and allowing dividends according to a formula based on recent income. The Board is also requiring banks to re-evaluate their longer-term capital plans,” said the statement.

But Fed Board Governor Lael Brainard said he “cannot support” the requirement.

“I do not support giving the green light for large banks to deplete capital, which raises the risk they will need to tighten credit or rebuild capital during the recovery. This policy fails to learn a key lesson of the financial crisis, and I cannot support it,” Brainard said in a statement also released on Thursday.

“Despite the substantial likelihood that banks will need larger capital buffers to absorb losses under plausible scenarios, the authorization permits distributions that will deplete capital buffers,” Brainard said, adding that the Fed’s action creates a significant risk that banks will need to raise capital or curtail credit at a challenging time.

Since 2009, the Fed has used the annual stress tests to measure large US banks’ ability to respond to severe economic and market turbulence.

If a bank’s capital is found to be inadequate, the central bank can block it from buying bank shares or paying dividends.

Given unprecedented uncertainty about the novel coronavirus and economic growth, the Fed incorporated three hypothetical recession scenarios into this year’s stress tests to assess the resiliency of large banks. These scenarios included a V-shaped recession and recovery; a slower, U-shaped recession and recovery; and a W-shaped, double-dip recession.

Google on Thursday launched a redesigned Photo that gives memories more prominence, bringing search front-and-center with a new three-tab structure: Photos, Search, and Library.

The main tab contains all the photos and videos but users will see larger thumbnails, auto-playing videos, and less white space between photos.

“At the very top, you’ll also notice a larger Memories carousel. It’s become one of our most beloved features, with more than 120 million people viewing Memories every month,” informed Google.

Google said it is putting search front and center to give you quick access to the people, places, and things most important to you.

“The library tab contains the most important destinations in your photo library, like Albums, Favorites, Trash, Archive, and more. If you’re in the US, EU, or Canada, you’ll also see our Print Store, where you can purchase printed products featuring your own photos,” Google explained.

As part of the new search tab, users will see an interactive map view of photos and videos. One can pinch and zoom around the globe to explore photos of his or her travels.

“If you enable location from your device camera, Location History, or manually add locations, those photos have always been organized and searchable by place in Google Photos. Rolling out today, they’ll also show up on the map view,” said Google.

Google has also moved automatic creations — like movies, collages, animations, stylized photos, and more — from the “For you” tab (which is now gone) and into Memories.

The company has also simplified the Google Photos icon while retaining that familiar pinwheel shape to remind you of past memories.

SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son on Thursday announced that he would step down from the board of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

The announcement made at the annual general meeting of shareholders marks the end of an era as Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma’s resignation from the board of SoftBank Group also went into effect from Thursday.

SoftBank did not cite any reason when it first announced in May that the Alibaba co-founder would be stepping down from its board, after serving it for nearly 13 years.

Son invested $20 million in Alibaba in 2000 — a bet that turned into $60 billion when Alibaba went public in 2014, according to CNN.

The two business leaders have maintained close relationships over the years.

SoftBank on Thursday also announced additional corporate governance enhancements, including the election by shareholders of two new independent directors.

Lip-Bu Tan, Founder and Chairman of Walden International Inc. and CEO of Cadence Design Systems Inc., and Yuko Kawamoto, Professor at Waseda Business School (Graduate School of Business and Finance), were elected with the support of voting shareholders.

Yoshimitsu Goto, Senior Vice President, CFO, CISO & Chief Sustainability Officer at SoftBank Group, was also elected to the Board of Directors.

The new additions will expand SBG’s Board to 13 Directors, including four independent directors.

“Our latest efforts build on SoftBank’s commitment to increase the diversity of our Board and add new and fresh perspectives, as well as bring our corporate governance in line with both global standards and the expectations of Japanese and international investors,” said Son.

Carter announced his retirement from professional basketball on Thursday after 22 seasons in the league with eight teams.

Filmmaker Ananth Mahadevan, whose film “Mai Ghat: Crime No 103/2005” is being screened at ‘Marche du Film Online of 73rd Cannes Film Festival, says that the film holds more relevance in the present time than ever, considering police brutality is a global phenomenon now.

Mahadevan’s film is based on the real-life story of Prabhavati Amma from Kerala, who lost her son Udayakumar due to police brutality in 2005.

Citing the example of the killing of African-American George Floyd by the police that took place in the US, Ananth said: “I think suddenly the rage against the police brutality has gone to its pick, a lot of protests are taking place worldwide. Whether it is in our country or in abroad, there are so many videos and news coverage we get to see on police brutality these days. Although it is not a new practice where innocents are brutalized by the police, the conversation around it has come into the forefront.”

“On the other hand, the story of my film is also of quiet rage, and the battle of a mother who has to wait for justice to be served, for her son who died owing to police brutality.”

The film features Usha Yadav as the female protagonist. It was selected for the Indian Panorama section and screened in International Film Festival in Goa last year. Usha bagged the Silver Peacock as Best Actress.

About casting Usha Yadav as his leading lady in his Marathi film, Ananth said: “Usha Yadav is a brilliant actress! In the film, she aged from the age of 25 to the age of 60 years old. With the kind of body language, the expression she played the older version of the character, it is really impressive. For the rest of the characters, I cast actors from theatre because I looked for real faces.”

TN corona count gallops to 70,977, death toll at 911

Tamil Nadu’s coronavirus count galloped to 70,977 infections with 3,509 persons testing positive for the virus in the last 24-hours, the State Health Department said on Thursday.

In a statement issued here, the Health Department also said, 45 Covid-19 patients died in Tamil Nadu taking the death toll due to the pandemic to 911.

For the past few days, the new infection rate was in the 2,000 range, and for the first time since the pandemic broke out in the state, the new infection touched a record high of 3,509.

The statement said a total of 32,543 samples were tested taking the total tally to 10.08 lakh.

On the positive side, a total of 2,236 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals, which was also a record high to date.

Factoring the Covid-19 cured patients to date and the number of persons who died due to the virus, the total number of active cases in Tamil Nadu stands at 30,064.

The number of infected children in the state in the age group 0-12 went up to 3,481.

The state capital Chennai continued to top the infection table with 1,834 persons testing positive for the virus and the total tally stands at 47,650 in the city. The active cases in the city stand at 18,969.

India said on Thursday that the proclamation by US President Donald Trump on H1B visas will affect the movement of skilled Indian professionals.

“We have seen the Proclamation issued by President Trump on June 22 temporarily suspending entry of certain categories of non-immigrant visa-holders & their family members till December 31, 2020”, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

This is likely to affect the movement of Indian skilled professionals who avail of these non-immigrant visas to work in the US, it said.

“We are assessing the impact of the order on Indian nationals and industry in consultation with stakeholders,” it added.

People-to-people linkages and trade & economic cooperation, especially in technology and innovation sectors, are an important dimension of the US-India partnership, the MEA said.

High-skilled Indian professionals bring important skill sets, bridge technological gaps, and impart a competitive edge to the US economy, it said.

Railways readies 1.91 PPE kits for Covid-19 warriors

The Indian Railways has prepared 1.91 lakh personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, 7.33 lakh face masks, and over 66,400 liters sanitizers for Covid-19 warriors.

A senior Railway Ministry spokesperson said the railways in coordination with other Ministries and state governments were geared up to meet the challenge of providing protection to its front-line medical workers and other operational staff.

He said the railway’s workshops took up the challenge and raw material for producing these items was also procured by the field units. The PPE coverall target for June and July has been set at 1.5 lakh each, which is likely to be revised upwards.

The officer said during the lockdown, centralized procurement and distribution of the raw material and manufactured products throughout the railway’s network was accomplished under testing circumstances.

“Northern Railway was nominated for centralized procurement of raw material required for the manufacture of PPE coveralls, a critical component with respect to quality. All in-house manufactured products satisfy all applicable quality standards,” he said.

“To further strengthen the preparedness of railways, an order for 22 lakh PPE coveralls, 22.5 lakh N95 masks, 2.25 lakh liters hand sanitizer, and other items was centrally placed by Northern Railway on HLL Life Care (PSU under MoHFW), for requirements of railway units,” he said.

The national transporter has designated 50 railway hospitals as COVID dedicated hospitals and COVID dedicated health centers.

It also converted 5,231 railway coaches into isolation wards to serve as the COVID care centers to augment the capacity of health infrastructure. To date, 960 coaches have been stationed at several locations based on requests received from the states.

Director Sukumar is heard to be very particular in the order of scenes and also the output of every scene he shows us is almost what he imagined it to be. Such a mastermind is now upset with his calculations and sequence of tasks, all going tossed into confusion and blur.

Sukumar joined hands with his favourite, Allu Arjun for Pushpa and the first look of the same is released during the lockdown. The talented director wanted to shoot Pushparaju’s introduction song in the red sanders backdrop, probably in Seshachalam forests, where he also wanted to shoot some key scenes on the hero.

Sukumar’s strong will was to start the filming of Pushpa with this introduction song and the crucial scenes. He wanted to gain confidence by shooting the said scenes so they steer him to complete the complicated subject with the same energy. Sukumar also got some 1000 junior artists readied for the song shoot, but all in vain.

Neither coronavirus nor the authorities allow any film to shoot with a large crew. While many filmmakers are revving up their halted projects with a limited people taking part in the shoot, Sukumar is heard to be not interested to shoot normal scenes and that too with limited cast and crew first. It looks like the master of perfection is in dilemma and lets us see how he overcomes it.

Jharkhand govt circular on fees disappoints parents

A Jharkhand education department circular on Thursday disappointed parents in the state.

The parents association has condemned the education department circular which says that “there will be no hike of tuition fees during lockdown”. Many states have issued guidelines that private schools will not charge tuition fees during the lockdown period.

Jharkhand Abhiwak Sangh president Ajay Rai said ” We were demanding to waive off the tuition fee of lockdown period but the state govt buckled under the pressure of the private schools. The state govt decision has given a weapon to private schools and demoralized the parents.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party has also criticized the Jharkhand government move.

“The Hemant Soren government is insensitive towards education and students of the state. It is playing in the hands of the private schools otherwise such decisions would not have been taken” said BJP leader Rabi Bhatt.

The education department circular says “there will be no hike in school tuition by the private schools, The tuition fees will be charged as taken previously. No student admission will be canceled in case of nonpayment.” The circular has exempted the parents from paying bus charges for the lockdown period.

The Jharkhand Education Minister had held a meeting with the parents association and private school managements regarding fees.

Kerala records over 100 Covid positive cases entire week

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that for the entire previous week Kerala has been recording over 100 Covid-19 positive cases, with 123 testings positive on Thursday.

“Of the new cases, 84 came from abroad, 33 were those who came from within the country, while six were local infections,” said Vijayan.

He said at present there are 1,761 active cases, while in all 3,726 contracted the virus and 22 people so far died. Of the dead, 20 of them had other underlying ailments also.

At present, there are 1,59,616 people in isolation which includes 2,349 in various hospitals and there are 113 hotspots in the state.

“Experts have opined that with a large number of our people returning from abroad, isolation and quarantine by them have to be adhered to in letter and spirit. One reason why we have been able to keep the contact spread to just 7 percent is because of our successful and strict home quarantine rules and it has to be carried forward in the same manner,” said Vijayan.

By now 98,202 people have returned from abroad starting from the first flight which arrived on May 7.

According to those registered in the Norka-Roots website, another two lakh from abroad are expected, and given the rate at which new cases are going up, there are expectations by a study team that it might go up further by August.

“Starting tomorrow every day there will be around 40 flights from abroad and all arrangements for instant testing at the airports are ready and in 14 districts of the state 29 COVID hospitals and 29 COVID first-line treatment centers are also ready. If required, second line COVID treatment centers would also be opened,” added Vijayan.

He also said that none will be fleeced when they buy food materials while waiting at the airport for tests.

‘Dil Bechara’ is set to have a digital release

In a disappointment to Bollywood hero Sushant Singh Rajput’s fans, his last film ‘Dil Bechara’ is set to have a digital release. Disney which has acquired HotStar has announced this taking to their social media.

“A story of love, hope, and endless memories. Celebrating the late #SushantSinghRajput’s legacy that will be etched in the minds of all and cherished forever. #DilBechara coming to everyone on July 24,” tweeted Disney+HotStar handle.

Initially ‘Dil Bechara’ was slated to release in theatres on May 8th. But due to lockdown, it did not happen. The film based on John Green’s 2013 bestseller ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ marks the directorial debut of Mukesh Chhabra.

Music is composed by AR Rahman and the film also stars Sanjana Sanghi and Saif Ali Khan in other lead roles.

However, fans of Sushant urged the producers of this film to release in theatres so that they can see him for one last time on the big screen. Well, this is not going to happen now.
