The Bombay High Court has granted urgent legal protection to the upcoming epic Ramayana: Rise of a Legend to prevent online piracy ahead of its theatrical release. The makers approached the court after unauthorised recordings of portions of the film’s trailer were reportedly leaked online following a private screening. Fearing that the full movie could also be illegally circulated after its release, the production team sought legal intervention.
The court has directed internet service providers and social media platforms to identify, block and remove unauthorised clips, audio recordings and complete copies of the film. Technology companies, including Google, have reportedly agreed to comply with the directions. Individuals involved in uploading or sharing pirated content could also face legal consequences.
A key feature of the order is its dynamic injunction, which allows the filmmakers to seek the blocking of newly discovered piracy websites and links without approaching the court for a fresh order every time. This provision is intended to prevent piracy operators from simply shifting to new websites or URLs to continue distributing the content.
The order is expected to remain in force until mid-December, when the court will review the matter again.
The legal protection comes at a crucial time for the ambitious project, with the first part of Ramayana reportedly being made on a massive budget of Rs. 2,000 crore. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi in key roles, while A. R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer are composing the music.
With such a huge investment involved, the makers are keen to protect the film from piracy and encourage audiences to experience the epic on the big screen.
