Yes, its official now, he is standing for re-election. Yes, I am talking about our 65-year-old Russian President who made the announcement to spectators of workers at the GAZ car factory in Nizhny Novgorod. He told the attendees, “I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian Federation”. He further added that he cannot think of a better place and timing and a better moment to announce his candidacy.
He thanked all for their work, for their attitude towards jobs, your factory, your city, and of course your country! I’m sure that together we will succeed.
This piece of news that Putin intends to become President for another six years is no surprise or shocker to Russians, not to those observing the election abroad. Putin is glorified as nation’s father figure who has reinstated national pride and expanded Moscow’s global influence with interventions in Syria and Ukraine. Of course, his critics have a different opinion to share, they accused him of overseeing a corrupt authoritarian system and of illegally annexing Ukraine’s Crimea, a move that has isolated Russia.
Putin does not have many competitors, nobody looks as able and capable of occupying his place at present scenario. His toughest task will be to mobilize an electorate that shows signs of apathy to safeguard high voters in the tightly controlled limits of the Russian political system.
