After being the president of the Indian National Congress party for 19 years, Smt. Sonia Gandhi will soon resign from the post. Rahul Gandhi will take over as the next president of the Indian National Congress [INC].
Sonia Gandhi was subjected to severe criticism during her initial days as the party’s president. Many senior party leaders expressed their displeasure and stated that Sonia lacks leadership qualities like her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi. They also alleged that she is unfit to lead the party which has a 100-year-old history.
With time, Sonia grew in the eyes of every leader. She became so powerful to an extent that, even top leaders like former PM Narasimha Rao, former President Pranab Mukherjee and former Finance Minister Chidambaram never raised their voice against her.
It is under her leadership, Congress formed the government at the Centre after 2004 and 2009 General Assembly elections. She had a great influence on the national politics during the 2002 – 2014 period. Post the humiliating defeat in 2014 General Assembly elections, she was restricted to the position of ‘Leader of the Opposition party’.
It is heard that in recent times Sonia has kept herself away from Congress Core Committee meetings. Rahul took over Sonia Gandhi as the party’s president unofficially, a couple of years’ back itself. Even her health played a vital role in her decision to quit the politics. Sonia was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2011.
