It was the India Tour of Australia 2003 – 2004 series. The incident took place during the last and final test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Jan 2nd – Jan 6th, 2004. It was the final day of the test match. Australian Captain Steve Waugh came to the crease after DR Martyn was dismissed.
This also happened to be the last match of Steve Waugh. After Waugh arrived at the crease and was taking the guard, Indian wicket-keeper, Parthiv Patel, who was a touch taller than 5 feet, started sledging the mighty Australian captain.
Parthiv said, ‘come on boys come on. … I dare you [Steve Waugh] play your famous slog sweep once again. It would be your end’. On hearing these words, Waugh was shocked and retaliated in a typical Aussie way.
‘Kid… at least respect me for my age. Look, you were still in diapers when I played my first match,’ said Steve Waugh.
Interestingly, the sledging became the headlines of the local Australian Tabloids after the match ended in a draw. Post-match, the Ganguly, Dravid and other seniors cautioned Parthiv Patel about the incident.
