WhatsApp’s new interesting features coming soon for all users

0

WhatsApp is working on a host of new features for its users. The two most awaited features coming to instant messaging platforms are Dark Mode and self-destructing messages. Note that these features haven’t made it to the final version of WhatsApp but have made constant appearances in the recent beta versions.

WhatsApp Dark Mode

Be it Google Maps or Instagram, most of the popular apps on your phone already support Dark Mode. WhatsApp has been a big missing name on the list. A Dark Mode on WhatsApp, however, appears very close to an official launch. According to recent beta versions, still-in-making WhatsApp’s Dark Theme will be a new option for users along with Light Theme and System Default. The Dark Theme, however, will be slightly different than Instagram’s. Instead of dark black color, WhatsApp will offer a lesser intensity of the inverted color.

Self-destructing feature

WhatsApp will soon offer Snapchat-style self-destructing messaging features. The new feature will be different WhatsApp’s ‘delete for everyone’ feature. Inspired by Snapchat’s self-destructing feature, WhatsApp will allow users to retract a message after a certain period. Users will have the possibility to pick between 5 seconds, 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, and also 30 days for these self-destructing messages.

Bonus

WhatsApp recently launched a slew of new features for iPhone users. Some of these features have been part of the Android version for quite some time. WhatsApp for iOS has now added a new edit tool for media in chats. Another big feature for iPhone users is the ability to play WhatsApp’s voice messages in notifications itself.

Chidambaram Charged In INX Case; He’s Lost 4 kg In Jail, Says Lawyer

0

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, his son Karti and senior government officials have been charged in the INX Media corruption case for causing huge losses to the taxpayer in return of kickbacks, the Central Bureau of Investigation told the Supreme Court on Friday.

Rejecting Mr Chidambaram’s application for bail, the CBI informed the court that the 74-year-old Congress leader acts as a flight risk and could also affect a witness. The charge sheet was filed before a special court, the agency said.

“The witness has stated that he is being influenced. We don’t wish to disclose his identity and his name has been given submitted to the CBI court in a sealed cover,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, said.

Stating that the nation needs to have a “zero-tolerance strategy” on corruption, Mr Mehta said the court that charges in the case upon Mr Chidambaram include forgery.

Countering the CBI, Mr Chidambaram’s lawyer and party colleague Kapil Sibal said, “P Chidambaram’s passport is impounded, there is a lookout notice against him and he has never applied for travel. So where is the question of flight risk? How can he run away? He is recognized all over the world.”

Mr Chidambaram has lost weight while in custody – more than 4 kg – and given the onset of winter and fear of dengue, there is no justification to keep him in jail, Mr Sibal said. “It is only to humiliate him. If the witness is influenced, the government has to protect the witness… he hasn’t influenced anyone,” the Congress leader added.

After hearing both sides, the Supreme Court reserved its order on Mr Chidambaram’s bail plea.

P Chidambaram, who served twice as a finance minister and also as a home minister in the previous Congress-led governments, was arrested in a dramatic late-night swoop on August 21 by officers from the CBI.

After being questioned at the agency’s headquarters for 14 days, he was transferred to the capital’s Tihar jail under judicial custody on September 5.

On Wednesday, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate which is investigating a separate money laundering case. He was moved to the agency’s custody yesterday out of Tihar.

Mr Chidambaram is facing claims he received bribes in exchange for foreign investment clearances to a media company INX Media. The company’s co-founders Peter and Indrani Mukerjea are currently in prison in the trial including the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora. Indrani Mukerjea has become an approver in the case versus the Chidambaram’s and the investigative agencies have based their case on her testimony.

Mr Chidambaram’s son Karti and several government officials are also being investigated over their role in the scandals. The Chidambarams have denied any wrongdoing and said the charges are politically motivated.

On Economy, Rahul Gandhi’s Suggestion To PM Is To Steal Congress’s Ideas

0

A day after attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over privatization of state-run companies, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continued his onslaught on Friday, saying the country’s economy had sunk and the BJP-led central government was “clueless”. Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, he said they should steal ideas from the Congress’s manifesto to tackle the “mess”.

“Rural India is in severe distress. The economy has sunk and the government is clueless about what to do. PM and FM should steal ideas from the Congress manifesto where we had anticipated and set down detailed plans to tackle the mess,” Mr Gandhi tweeted.

India’s GDP or gross domestic product grew 5 percent in the quarter ended June 30, the slowest in more than six years, triggering fears of an economic slowdown. The sales figure of many key sectors, including the auto sector, has been steadily declining over the last few months.

In response, the center has undertaken a slew of measures to revive the economy, announcing several reforms, including merging several public sector banks and slashing the corporate tax.

Congress and other opposition parties have slammed the government over the state of the economy. Former PM Manmohan Singh on Thursday said it was unlikely that India will achieve PM Modi’s promise of a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2024 due to a “vicious slowdown”.

Mr Gandhi, who is currently campaigning for his party for the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, has made economic slowdown his main issue to attack the government with. On Thursday, he alleged that PM Modi was involved in crony capitalism.

“#BechendraModi is contracting out the nation’s PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) to his suited-booted supporters that endured years of hard work to produce. This spells a period of uncertainty and concern for lakhs of PSU operators. I am being shoulder-to-shoulder with the workers in their fight to this loot,” Mr Gandhi had tweeted in Hindi.

Earlier this week, Mr Gandhi had called PM Modi the loudspeaker of industrialists.

Mr Rahul Gandhi had stepped down as the Congress president following his party’s crushing defeat in the national election earlier this year. His mother Sonia Gandhi took over the party as its interim chief. His election rally in Maharashtra earlier this week was his first public appearance in months.

Sarfaraz Sacked As Captain, Azhar Takes Over In Tests,Babar In T20Is for Pak

Sarfaraz Ahmed has been sacked as Pakistan captain in Tests and T20Is, the country’s cricket board announced on Friday. It remains to be seen who will lead the side in ODIs, with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) saying that a decision will be “finalized in due course”. Pakistan’s next ODI assignment is not until July next year, a three-match series against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.

The PCB said Azhar Ali will lead the side in Test matches, while Babar Azam has been appointed the new T20I captain. Not only has Sarfaraz lost his captaincy, but due to the “drop-in his overall form”, he has been dropped from both the Test and T20I sides.

Pakistan’s new Test skipper Azhar Ali delighted with the new responsibility, said, “There is no bigger honor than to captain the Pakistan national cricket team in the pinnacle format of the game”.

Babar Azam who will lead the Pakistan T20I side he will carry forward the legacy of his predecessor under whom the team achieved the No. 1 spot and help the team evolve into a “powerful side”.

“It is my responsibility to take forward Sarfaraz Ahmed’s accomplishments in T20Is so that we remain a consistent, attractive and powerful side,” said Azam.

Azhar Ali has been made the Test captain for the World Test Championship in the 2019-20 season, while Babar Azam will lead the side in the shortest format shortest until next year’s ICC T20 World Cup Australia 2020.

Pakistan is scheduled to tour Australia for a three-match T20I series and a two-Test series. Ahmed, who led the Pakistani side in the World Cup 2019, has been dropped from both the squads “due to the drop in his overall form during the past few series”.

The outgoing skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed said he was honored to lead the side at the highest level. He also wished the new captains well for future assignments.

“It has been an achievement to captain Pakistan at the highest level. I want to thank all my partners, coaches, and selectors who have helped me in this journey. My good wishes are with Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, and I hope they will proceed to grow stronger and stronger,” Sarfaraz stated.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani, who approved the appointments, said: “I want to congratulate Azhar Ali and Babar Azam on their heights to the most coveted and prestigious roles in cricket. It is a reward for their sustained hard work in strive for perfection and I am sure they, like their predecessors, will make the nation proud of their performance, captaincy, and sportsmanship.

“It has been a difficult decision to drop Sarfaraz Ahmed, who has performed well as a player and a leader. But, his loss in form and confidence is visible and, in the best interest of the team, it has been decided to leave him out and provide him the chance to speculate and regroup himself and try to improve his form away from international cricket.

“Sarfaraz Ahmed’s contributions are second to none and being the gutsy cricketer and fighter that we all know he is, I have no doubts he will be back in Pakistan colors at some stage.”

“The choice on vice-captaincy will be advanced closer to the series, whilst captaincy for the ODIs will be finalized in a while as the national team’s next task is cataloged from 4-9 July 2020 against the Netherlands in Amstelveen” the PCB’s statement read.

Rohit Sharma Takes Cheeky Dig At Reporters After His Test Double Century

0

Rohit Sharma was in full flow during the Ranchi Test between India and South Africa and carried on the momentum to the press conference at the end of Day 2. Rohit Sharma grabbed the opportunity of opening as a Test batsman with both hands and delivered with two centuries and a double-century in the ongoing India vs South Africa series so far.

The Mumbai batsman also did not give away the chance of taking a cheeky dig at reporters as he pointed out that, if he wouldn’t have scored enough runs in the India vs South Africa Test series, the journalists would have got a lot to write about him.

“For me, it was like, whenever you get the opportunity, it was a good opportunity to bat on top of the order, otherwise there was a lot to happen,” Rohit Sharma told reporters at the post-match press conference on Day 2.

“I know, you guys write a lot about me, now you will write good things,” he added.

The 32-year-old scored his maiden double century in the Ranchi Test. With his best-ever Test score of 212 runs, he surpassed Don Bradman’s record for the highest Test average at home after 10-plus innings.

Rohit Sharma now averages an exceptional 99.84 at home edging past Don Bradman’s average of 98.22.

He has featured in 30 Tests for India, scoring 2,019 at an average of 46.95 so far after the second day’s play in Ranchi.

South Africa’s Batting under test as India eye clean sweep

0

While the influence of the toss remains a point of contention in Tests in India, South Africa is also thinking of ways to improve their first innings batting performances. Faf du Plessis pointed it out as one that could potentially decide the outcome of the Ranchi Test. Now that’s no secret about the structure of Test cricket, particularly in the subcontinent. And on this tour, South Africa would be right to be rankled about wickets lost to pace over those lost to spin.

Particularly against the new ball, as was evident in Pune, South Africa gave India an advantage so big that the result was a case of eventuality from very early in the game.

One of the factors about the importance of striking with the new ball in India is that, if you manage to do that then there are fewer batsmen to take advantage of the SG ball when it becomes soft after around 40 overs. When the SG ball goes soft, the difference in characteristics is also stark, wherein it starts to come slower off the surface and renders spinners less effective.

Think about South Africa’s lower order partnerships during the series and the time at which they come to get an idea of how much easier the batting becomes. The Rahane-Kohli stand in Pune involved a period of play where the well-set duo blunted the second new ball, so that they could capitalize later. Kohli even revealed that he timed the declaration at Vizag late so that his bowlers are fresh and have a full morning with the SG ball when it’s hard.

Throughout these two Tests, South Africa has lost 28 wickets as compared to India’s 7 when the SG ball is hard (first 40 overs with either first or second new ball). South Africa’s batting average also gains a 15-point difference after the first 40 overs but it doesn’t add too much to the outcome since they’d already lost too many wickets upfront. Du Plessis has promised quite a few changes in personnel, and batting order for the third and final Test. What’d be interesting to see is if they find ways of improving their ability to strike hard when the SG is hard as well.

Probable XI of South Africa: Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Theunis de Bruyn, Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Vernon Philander, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Piedt/George Linde, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje/Lungi Ngidi

Probable XI of India: Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav/Hanuma Vihari

Three Terror Launch Pads in PoK Destroyed: Army Chief Bipin Rawat

0

In a major counter-offensive after Pakistan’s unprovoked firing, the Indian Army on Sunday carried out heavy artillery strikes targeting four terror launch pads and several Pakistani military positions in Neelam Valley in PoK, killing 6-10 of their soldiers and as many terrorists, Army Chief Bipin Rawat said.

The Indian retaliation came a day after the Pakistan military resorted to firing in the Tangadhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir along the Line of Control to assist infiltration by terrorists, killing two Indian Army personnel and a civilian. Three others were also injured in the attack.

The retaliation has caused substantial harm to the terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC), Rawat told reporters on the sidelines of an event. “So far, as per the information available with us, 6-10 Pakistani soldiers have been killed and nearly as many terrorists,” the Army Chief said, adding that more information on terrorist casualty was being obtained.

“Three terror camps have been destroyed and on the fourth one also, we have caused severe damage,” he said. If Pakistan continued with such activities, the Indian Army would not hesitate to retaliate, the Army chief asserted.

The army targeted the terror camps in Jura, Athmuqam and Kundalsahi among others in PoK using artillery guns, after credible inputs that a large number of terrorists were operating there. According to sources, 10-15 terrorists were staying in each of the facilities at the time of the attack, the most significant offensive since India carried out the Balakot strike in February.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the Army Chief and has been keeping an eye on the evolving situation along the LoC, government sources said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal denied that the Indian Army targeted terror camps in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and said it can arrange a visit of diplomats from P5 nations to the area to expose Indian “falsehood”.

Spokesperson of Pakistan Military Major General Asif Ghafoor, in a series of tweets, claimed a total of five Pakistani civilians were killed in the Indian strikes. Pakistan also summoned Indian envoy Gaurav Ahluwalia to condemn the firing by Indian troops.

A senior Indian Army official rejected Ghafoor’s allegations and claims.

In a statement, the Indian Army said Pakistani Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violations to assist infiltration by terrorists into Indian territories in the Tangadhar sector last evening.

It told the Indian Army to retain the right to react at a moment and point of its choosing in case the Pakistan Army remains to assist terrorist actions beyond Indian borders.

Rawat stated, “Ever since the abrogation of specific provisions we are getting renewed inputs regarding infiltration by terrorists from over the border.

The sources said Pakistan has been trying to push terrorists into Kashmir to trigger unrest.

Soon after the government announced its decision to reorganize Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, the Army was put on high alert along the LoC to effectively repulse any possible Pakistani misadventure.

The sources told the pounding of Pakistani areas and terror camps cannot in any way be related to surgical revolutions brought out by the Indian Army in September 2016 on terror launch pads across the Line of Control.

Nadeem joins India squad for Ranchi Test against SA

0

Shahbaz Nadeem, the left-arm spinner, has been added to India’s Test squad for the third Test versus South Africa in Ranchi, starting on October 19. The veteran spinner was added to the squad as cover after Kuldeep Yadav complained of shoulder pain on Friday.

Shahbaz Nadeem, who made his first-class debut way back in 2004 for Jharkhand versus Kerala, has picked up 424 scalps at an average of just over 28 in first-class cricket so far. He was the highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, ending with 51 and 56 wickets respectively.

In the last season, he was again among the wickets in first-class cricket, taking 37 scalps. The slow left-arm orthodox bowler was also in fine form (15 wickets) during India A’s tour of West Indies this year. Nadeem is also a useful batsman lower down the order, having scored seven fifties and one century in first-class games.

India has already secured the three-match series by conquering the first two Tests in Visakhapatnam and Pune.
