Auto sales continue to be on slow track in September after slight recovery

Experts said that the recent policy changes announced by the government have benefited auto manufacturers as sales increased in August, but failed to hold momentum in September.

low consumer sentiment continued to subdue sales performance of the Indian automobile sector in September, as major industry players reported a significant decline in their respective sales figures.

On the flip side, there was some recovery seen in the sales momentum over August 2019, however, market observers said that more time for the recent policy measures to kick-in and extra incentives for consumers need to be given for the growth trend to re-emerge.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the passenger car market leader — Maruti Suzuki India — reported a 24.4 per cent decline in its total vehicle sales, including exports.

A total of 122,640 units, including exports, were sold last month, compared to 162,290 vehicles sold in September 2018.

The auto major’s exports last month were recorded at 7,188 units, 17.8 per cent lower than 8,740 units exported in September 2018.

Similarly, automobile major Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) reported a decline of 8.1 per cent in its overall sales to 57,705 units from 62,757 units sold during September 2018.

The company’s domestic sales edged lower by 14.8 per cent to 40,705 units from 47,781 units. However, exports went up by 13.5 per cent to 17,000 units from 14,976 units shipped abroad in September 2018.

Another automobile major — Tata Motors — reported a 48.02 per cent slump in overall September sales to 36,376 vehicles in domestic and international markets compared to 69,991 units sold in the year-ago period.

The company reported a 50 per cent decline in domestic sales last month to 32,376 units from 64,598 units sold in September 2018.

In case of commercial vehicles, the sales declined by 45.4 per cent to 28,079 units compared to 51,419 units in the year-ago period.

With the ongoing subdued demand, we continued our focus on the system stock correction by driving retail and aligning production,” Girish Wagh, President, Commercial Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Retail sales are estimated to be ahead of wholesale figures by over 16 per cent in September and over 27 per cent in the second quarter, reducing stock to a six-quarter low. We are monitoring the impact of the relief package announced by the government, and look forward to improved demand from revival in consumption and spend in infrastructure projects,” Wagh said.

Besides, the company sold 8,097 passenger vehicles last month, which is a decline of 56 per cent over 18,429 units traded during the same period last year.

Further, Mahindra & Mahindra’s overall automotive sales went down 21 per cent in September 2019 to 43,343 vehicles compared to 55,022 vehicles during September 2018.

The company’s domestic sales edged lower by 21 per cent to 40,692 units from 51,268 units, while exports went down by 29 per cent to 2,651 units from 3,754 units shipped abroad in September 2018.

According to Veejay Ram Nakra, Chief of Sales and Marketing, Automotive Division, M&M: “We are positive that this festive season, with the onset of Navratra, will augur well for us and the automotive industry.

“This, in addition to factors such as good monsoon and the recently announced positive government initiatives should help revive the industry in the short term.”

Apart from vehicle manufacturers, the sales of two-wheelers were also heavily dented.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s total sales in September 2019 stood at 485,659 units, down from 555,740 units sold during the corresponding month of the previous year.

Hero MotoCorp sold 612,204 units of motorcycles and scooters during the month under review, down from 769,138 units sold during the year-ago period.

On the other hand, Suzuki Motorcycle India registered a YoY sales growth of 2.11 per cent to 73,658 units as compared to the 72,134 units off-take in the same period last year.

Commenting on passenger cars and commercial vehicles segment, Sridhar V., Partner, Grant Thornton India, said: “New introductions have been instrumental in the slight recovery in passenger car sales in September over August, while the YoY numbers indicate the extremely cold nature of the market. The market is yet to see the recovery mode set in.”

Sri Lanka Look To Level The Series Against Pakistan On Wednesday

it a glorious day for home supporters, as Pakistan took a 1-0 edge with a satisfactory 67-run triumph in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Monday (September 30).

Following the first match was wiped out due to steadfast rain, Pakistan would have been satisfied with their clinical presentation. Babar Azam extended to organize high scores and finished with his 11th ODI hundred. In Meantime, Usman Shinwari, who hadn’t represented the ODI side since March, noticed swing and hit the stumps to pluck up a five-for.

the home side batsmen also were able to adjust to the sluggish nature of the pitch. Azam took his innings to an aerial level by halving gaps at will. Iftikhar Ahmed, who regularly bats at no.4 for the Punjab side in List A, also displayed his abilities with an attacking hand lower down the order.

the series moves to the final ODI at the same venue, the hosts nevertheless have a few problems. Sarfaraz Ahmed, captain of Pakistan, hasn’t been amongst the runs in the ODI’s. The wicketkeeper didn’t specifically have a great time in England, concluding with only one fifty and managed only eight runs while batting in the death overs in the second ODI against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Look To Level The Series Against Pakistan On Wednesday

The visitors, in the meantime, seemed to be pretty flat on the ground. There was a sequence of misfields, with the captain, Thirimanne himself creating a few misfields. To make stuff worse, the batting line-up broke as Sri Lanka slipped to a pathetic 28 for 5 while hunting a sizeable 306.

Nevertheless, there is normally a silver insulation in defeat, and that appeared in the formation of the 177-run stand between S Jayasuriya and D Shanaka take the visitors to a total of some decency. Sri Lanka will look to level the series 1-1 on Wednesday.

Bengaluru Traffic Congestion Could Get Less Painful With Smart AI-Based Signals

The cameras will read traffic density and change signals in a smart manner

Around 35 traffic signals in the city are currently AI-adaptive

Will this solve traffic and vehicular congestion issues in Bengaluru?

The Indian government is slowly embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in many of its public services. The latest to join the club is the Bengaluru police department, which is all set to roll out AI-based traffic signals at most city junctions.

The initiative is expected to tackle the traffic issue, which is currently one of the biggest problems faced by Bengaluru citizens.

According to the additional commissioner of police, traffic, B R Ravikanthe Gowda, AI-enabled cameras will determine traffic density and calculate the time it would take to clear the particular wave of traffic and accordingly manage the signal lights.

A countdown timer in the AI-enabled device could help vehicles save fuel and will manage the changing of signals for smoother movement. At present, around 35 traffic signals are AI-adaptive, according to the traffic police.

While the plan involves setting up similar cameras at all traffic signals in the city, there has been no timeline announced for the same.

Meanwhile, experts feel shifting completely to AI is going to be a tedious process. “The police must regularly reset the signal at each junction. There is something called coordination of signals and they must be in sync. For instance, when the first signal shows green, the next junction should also switch to green so that vehicles move non-stop,” traffic expert M N Sreehari said in a media interview last month (September 22).

WhatsApp tests disappearing messages in its Android app

WhatsApp is by considerably the most famous instant messaging app globally. And that doesn’t mean that the Facebook-owned WhatsApp is resting on its laurels. And if the past few months are anything to go by, the WhatsApp Beta version which gives us a first glimpse at new features, usually translate into the final versions of the app that roll out for Android and iOS phones.

The latest WhatsApp Beta has something called Disappearing Messages, specifically on the WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.19.275 that is now available.

WhatsApp tests disappearing messages in its Android app

In the latest Beta version currently rolling out for Android, WABetaInfo says there is the feature that allows the sender of a message to set a self-destruction time for a message they have sent. At the moment, this is being tested in WhatsApp Groups, but could also be rolled out for personal chats.

According to the images of the settings options that show up as a pop-up window, a user can customize the message expiration and destruction for either 5 seconds or 1 hour. Do remember, this is still the beta version, and more duration options could be added. Once a user selects one of these options and the self-destruct is enabled, any message sent in a chat or WhatsApp group will be automatically deleted after that period.

It is expected that when these messages are deleted, they will not leave behind a message that indicates that a message from the chat flow has been deleted—these will simply disappear into the night.

On Gandhi Jayanti, PM To Declare India Open Defecation-Free

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kick-started countrywide celebrations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today. PM Modi, who launched the ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign in 2014, will declare the country open defecation-free at the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat in the evening.

The BJP and the Congress, which are making efforts to claim Mahatma Gandhi‘s legacy, have planned various events across the country on Gandhi Jayanti. Leaders cutting across party lines visited Rajghat, the resting place of the Mahatma, to pay homage to Gandhi.

PM Modi, who has a packed schedule, began his day with a visit to Rajghat and paid floral tribute. “Tributes to beloved Bapu! On #Gandhi150, we express gratitude to Mahatma Gandhi for his everlasting contribution to humanity. We pledge to continue working hard to realize his dreams and create a better planet,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

On Gandhi Jayanti, PM To Declare India Open Defecation-Free

In a short video on Mahatma Gandhi, PM Modi said his message of peace is still relevant to the world community. He also referred to the seven habits Gandhi had cautioned people about. These are money without effort, comfort without conscience, culture without personality, visit without ethics, science without humanity, spirituality without sacrifice and politics without principles.

PM Modi also visited Vijayghat, the resting place of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who also shares his birthday with Gandhi.

after 24-yr-old hyd woman’s death, L&T forms teams to inspect metro structure

Mounika was killed on September 22 after a piece of concrete fell on her head at the Ameerpet metro station.

In the aftermath of an incident that killed a 24-year-old woman at a metro station in Hyderabad after a portion of the concrete wall collapsed on her, the L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited has constituted six engineering teams to carry on repair works at metro stations in Hyderabad.

Mounika Reddy was killed after a sharp edge of a plaster piece fell on her from a height of nine metres while she was taking shelter from the rains at the Ameerpet station on September 22. Following reports that pointed out substandard quality of items used, Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister KT Rama Rao had ordered an inquiry to check the quality of the metro rail structure.

The quality checks made by six special engineering teams till date have rectified non-structural cracks, surface plaster peel-offs, concrete chip-offs, loose concrete pieces and loose coping stones at metro stations at Balanagar, Parade Grounds, Rasoolpura, Hitec City, Gandhi Bhavan, LB Nagar, Osmania medical college, New market, and Tarnaka.

In a press release issued by the HMRL on Tuesday, NVS Reddy, managing director, HMRL, said, “As directed by MA&UD minister K. T. Rama Rao, I am closely monitoring identification and rectification of repair works of all metro stations and other structures. L&T formed six special engineering teams equipped with boom lifts, floodlights, etc. While overall position of the structures was found to be safe and satisfactory by experienced engineering teams, not taking chances, even minute non-structural cracks are being rectified.”

On September 22, Mounika Reddy and her cousin Lithika had planned to visit a hostel at Ameerpet and had travelled from Kukatpally to Ameerpet by the Hyderabad Metro. Mounika was standing at a pedestrian zone, taking shelter from the rain, when a block of the mortar fell on her head, and she died as she was being taken to a hospital.

After discussions with family members, L&T has offered to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of Mounika.

BJP, RSS Taking Name of Gandhi is Victory for Congress, Says Rajasthan CM Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday stated it was an achievement for the Congress Party that the BJP and the RSS had to take the name of Mahatma Gandhi years after leaving to recognize him.

Speaking in a special gathering of the state Congress committee on the eve of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Gehlot said the country and the world could not maintain without his teaching and the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh should “excuse for their blunder”.

“their leaders had to respect the name of Gandhi. This is a success of our plans, programs and expectations,” he said, continuing that the outfits should receive their stance on the issue.

“I would like to know those characters that mere speaking of him will not work. You should explain what you have in your heart and mind.” Gehlot stated.

He told if the BJP and the RSS had understood their mistake, then they should tell that they could not acknowledge Gandhi as they operated as “canaries for the British”.

Admiring the Congress for “maintaining” the democracy in the nation for 70 years, the CM said an environment of violence had been built in the country since 2014.

The democracy was in crisis and there was an environment of terror in the entire country, he said.

Records Flowing, Allu Arjun Can’t Ask for More

if you remember, there was a time recently when rumours poured in that all was not well between Allu Arjun and Trivikram Srinivas because tensions arose between Allu Arjun and an assistant director. As a result, Allu Arjun became totally disinterested in the proceedings of the film.

All those rumours seem to be either baseless or unnecessarily flared up by the gossip-mongers. Now, going by the things for ‘Ala Vaikuntapuramlo‘, one can doubtlessly say that Allu Arjun can’t ask for more as the movie is getting everything done in the right manner. The first single ‘Samajavaragamana’ has created a record as the most-streamed song on the digital platforms within 24 hours of its release.

Records Flowing, Allu Arjun Can’t Ask for More

The viewers count is already close to 11 million views by the time this article is being written. The song is heard everywhere and it has caught up like fire. Amazing. The classy touch didn’t stop the song from being the most liked song of this week by classes and masses, and this song has set expectations for the upcoming songs and of course, on the movie, as well. The song is presently one of the top trends on all digital platforms.

India geared up for the first test against South Africa at Vizag

Ajinkya Rahane paused briefly before flashing a smile when reminded of his opportune return to century-making form ahead of the home season. “We understand the conditions well here,” he would say later in the press conference in a way of political correctness. That is an understatement and a half. India have lost just one Test at home since the start of the 2013 season. It is the sort of enviable record that allows the management to push an old (in their words) idea – using Rohit Sharma as a Test opener – with some degree of confidence.

India welcome this run of five Test Championship games, against South Africa and Bangladesh, after a two-year away cycle (they did play three scattered home Tests against Afghanistan and West Indies in 2018), which despite encountering obvious bumps, delivered them a golden batch of fast bowlers and established their standing as the preeminent Test team. Now back in the comforts of home, the narrative turns once more to Messrs Ashwin and Jadeja.

It is a curious period for serial record-setter Ashwin in particular. Already consigned to just the one-format in the national side, Ashwin has not been played since last year’s Adelaide Test. He has now also gone nearly two years without a Test match five-wicket haul and has seen the team management constantly plum up Kuldeep Yadav’s case. Jadeja’s fifer barren run has been just as long, but his defensive capabilities with the ball has helped him usurp Ashwin as the solo spinner in overseas conditions. The arrival of South Africa, though, should make way for sweet nostalgia. The idea of facing Ashwin, and Jadeja, on custom-made dust bowls had the Proteas breaking out in cold sweats during the 2015 series.

India geared up for the first test against South Africa at Vizag

That was a South Africa with AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla in the line-up. Four years on, a very different, a very young side will try their luck. Keshav Maharaj, they hope, is the trump card that will keep India from overtly flexing their spin muscle. Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma, meanwhile have to evolve into the batting flagbearers of gen-next that South Africa so yearn for. They have the ingredients, albeit raw, but they will have to rediscover the way to compete in India; the preceding generation isn’t handholding them through it.

It’s about as hard a start as conceivable for South Africa in the Championship. It looks worse when they glance to the other side and see India losing Jasprit Bumrah and appearing no weaker for it. They are No.1 on the Test Championship standings by a distance and expect that chasm to grow over the next few weeks.
India has already announced their playing XI against South Africa with Rohit Sharma is all set to open the innings tomorrow if the toss goes in India’s favor.
