The Bengal Files Struggles at the Box Office Amid Controversy

Vivek Agnihotri’s highly anticipated third installment of the Files Trilogy, The Bengal Files, has hit rough waters at the box office. The film, based on the infamous “Direct Action Day” called by the All-India Muslim League, which led to widespread Hindu-Muslim violence, has faced significant screening hurdles in West Bengal. Distributors and exhibitors reportedly refused to showcase the film, citing local sensitivities.

While the BJP criticized the Trinamool Congress for allegedly blocking the screenings, the government maintained there was no official ban. The movie also faced criticism for allegedly distorting historical events, with some calling it propaganda. Despite the buzz, these controversies failed to translate into audience turnout.

Trade reports reveal that The Bengal Files collected only around Rs. 6.5 crore nett in its opening weekend—barely 25% of what The Kashmir Files achieved during its debut. The film started slowly and didn’t experience any major spikes over the weekend, reflecting limited audience engagement.

Industry watchers suggest that audiences may be tiring of films centered on communal riots, noting that the formula that worked once may no longer resonate.

The film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumar, Simrat Kaur, and Anupam Kher, and is jointly produced by Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi, and Vivek Agnihotri. Despite the star-studded cast and the intense subject matter, The Bengal Files faces an uphill battle to recover its production costs and create a significant impact at the box office.

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra Hindi Release Struggles While South Versions Shine

0

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra has emerged as a major success at the box office. Director Dominic Arun, lead actors Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, producer Dulquer Salmaan, and the entire team are elated with the audience response and the impressive collections.

The film is fast approaching a ₹200 crore global gross, fueled by its strong performance in Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil markets. However, its Hindi release, which premiered on September 4, 2025, has yet to make a significant impact.

Despite praise from Bollywood stars like Alia Bhatt, Tripti Dimri, Priyanka Chopra, and Samantha for its female superhero narrative, the Hindi version has underperformed. In its first five days, it collected less than ₹2 crore, a stark contrast to its South Indian success.

The lukewarm reception in North India is attributed to stiff competition from films like Baaghi 4 and Param Sundari. How much the Hindi release will contribute to the film’s overall box office remains uncertain.

Ilaiyaraaja Sends Legal Notice Over Unauthorized Songs in Good Bad Ugly

0

Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja has taken legal action against the makers of Good Bad Ugly for allegedly using his songs without proper authorization. The composer claimed that tracks such as Otha Rubayum Tharen from Nattupura Pattu, Ilamai Idho Idho from Sakalakala Vallavan, and En Jodi Manja Kuruvi from Vikram were incorporated into the film without his consent.

The production house reportedly responded, stating that they had obtained necessary permissions, but failed to provide details about the sources of these authorizations. As a result, Ilaiyaraaja approached the Madras High Court. Justice Senthikumar subsequently issued an interim order restraining Mythri Movie Makers from exhibiting, screening, distributing, selling, publishing, or broadcasting Good Bad Ugly on any platform, including OTT services.

The court noted that the production house’s reply lacked supporting evidence, effectively leading to a halt in the film’s public availability. Consequently, Good Bad Ugly is expected to be removed from Netflix and will remain under the court’s injunction until the next hearing.

Mohanlal’s Hridayapoorvam Joins Rs 50 Crore Club: Mollywood Legend’s Hat-Trick

0

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has achieved a rare milestone with his latest release, Hridayapoorvam. The family entertainer has joined the ₹50 crore club worldwide, making Mohanlal the first Mollywood actor to deliver three consecutive films crossing the ₹50 crore mark.

Lalettan’s previous hits, E2: Empuraan and Thudarum, each grossed over ₹200 crores, setting high expectations for Hridayapoorvam. While the film is performing strongly at the box office, trade analysts note that it may face challenges reaching the ₹100 crore milestone due to its family-oriented appeal, which lacks the mass-action draw of bigger blockbusters. The post-Onam audience trend may also affect its extended run.

Despite this, Mohanlal’s sheer star power continues to be the driving force behind the film’s success. Hridayapoorvam features Malavika Mohanan, Sangeeth Prathap, and Sangita Madhavan Nair in key roles, with acclaimed director Sathyan Anthikad at the helm. The movie is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the renowned Aashirvad Cinemas banner, known for backing Mohanlal’s hit films like Drishyam.

With its blend of heartwarming storytelling and Mohanlal’s iconic presence, Hridayapoorvam has not only delighted audiences but also cemented the superstar’s box office dominance in Mollywood.

Little Hearts Box Office Success: Mouli and Shivani Shine in Youthful Drama

Little Hearts Shine at the Box Office

Small films are proving time and again that content matters more than star power, and Little Hearts is the latest example. This youthful, nostalgic drama, starring YouTube sensation Mouli Tanuj Prashanth and Shivani Nagaram, is making waves at the box office with impressive collections.

Several factors worked in favor of Little Hearts even before its release. Mouli, riding high on the success of his debut series 90’s – A Middle Class Biopic, returned with a film backed by the same director-producer team, including Aditya Hasan and ETV Win. The involvement of noted distributor Bunny Vasain in acquiring the theatrical rights further added credibility and anticipation.

Mouli’s signature humorous style and relatable promotional videos created a buzz among young audiences on social media, while the film’s trailer garnered widespread attention, building excitement ahead of its release.

The positive word-of-mouth and encouraging reviews gave Little Hearts an extra push. In a remarkable feat, the film reportedly reached its break-even point within just two days of release. Impressively, it held its ground against big-ticket films like Anushka Shetty’s Ghaati, raking in around ₹4.25 crores at the box office—proving that a well-crafted small film can indeed win big.

Mirai Box Office Update: Teja Sajja’s Film Becomes Profitable Ahead of Release

0

Ever since Mirai was announced, anticipation has been steadily building, with every update further exciting the audience. This positive buzz has given People Media Factory a much-needed boost, helping them recover from a series of underwhelming box office performances.

Made on a budget of ₹60 crores, Mirai was designed to be visually spectacular and grand in scale. Remarkably, even before its theatrical release on September 12, the film has already turned profitable. Reports suggest that the producers earned ₹45 crores from non-theatrical rights alone, securing a table profit of ₹20 crores ahead of release — a notable achievement in today’s challenging film market.

This year, many big-budget and mid-range films struggled to break even, often chasing pan-India trends with inflated budgets. In contrast, Mirai’s star Teja Sajja opted for a smart, calculated approach, contributing to a commercially viable project.

Despite several buyers offering premium prices for theatrical rights, the producers chose to release the film themselves — a move that reflects their confidence in the content, particularly after the trailer received an overwhelmingly positive response across multiple languages.

Mirai demonstrates that high-quality cinema can be achieved without overspending or relying solely on star power. People Media Factory has struck a delicate balance between cost and quality, setting a new benchmark for how films can, and perhaps should, be made in the modern era.
