WhatsApp, the most popular messaging platform, has been served a legal notice, asking it to remove the “middle finger” Emoji within 15 days. Emoji is a small digital image or icon which is used to express an emotion or a feeling.
According to Indian Penal Code, it is highly objectionable and offense in India to show obscene, lewd, offensive gestures to females, a Delhi based advocate mentioned in the legal notice.
“By offering to use such an emoji in your app, you are directly abetting the use of offensive, lewd and obscene gesture,” the notice said.
The advocate made a request to WhatsApp to remove the middle finger emoji from the platform within 2 weeks’ time. He also threatened of civil or criminal cases if the app doesn’t obey. The Facebook-owned social media platform is yet to respond to the notice.
