Chandra Babu Adds Kaapu Community To OBC List

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Friday took the final call to add the Kaapu Community to the OBC (Other Backward Castes) list. The CM also stated that 5% reservation will be provided in Education and Employment sector.

Justice Manjunatha Commission that was laid to look into the status of OBCs and the inclusion of Kaapu community to the OBCs list. The Kaapu community leaders have been demanding the inclusion of Telaga, Balija and Ontari subsections in Kaapu and Kaapu Community in the OBC list.

The state cabinet, chaired by Chandrababu Naidu approved the Justice Manjunatha Commission report in this context. Kaapu community leaders were seen celebrating the announcement across the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The current reservation for OBCs is 25%. Before the inclusion of Kaapu community, the OBCs were divided into A, B, C, D and E. With the inclusion of the Kaapu community and its subsections, the sixth division comes into existence with 5% reservations.

The total percentage of reservations after the AP CM’s latest announcement will go up to 51% (OBCs – 30%, SCs – 15% and STs – 6%) in the State of Andhra Pradesh. This is above the ceiling of 50% prescribed by the Supreme Court in its ruling in November 1992.
