Competition will provide better idea of our level, says Bajrang

The Indian men’s wrestling camp for the Freestyle and Greco-Roman category is currently in progress at the SAI NCOE, Sonepat. The camp had commenced on September 1 and the wrestlers had to complete a 14-day quarantine before starting their training.

Bajrang Punia, who is one of India’s premier Olympic medal hopefuls, is happy to be back at the national camp and training again.

“It is very good that we are back at training, it isn’t that we were out of rhythm because we were training at our homes during the lockdown but that cannot be compared to what one can do at the camp and when we train on mats,” said Bajrang as per an SAI statement.

“The arrangements that have been made at SAI Sonepat are very good and safe, proper zoning of the campus has been done and no outsider can come in contact. All wrestlers feel very safe here,” he added.

The 26-year-old 65 kg freestyle wrestler won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and Commonwealth Games as well as a silver medal at the 2018 World Championships and bronze at the 2019 World Championships.

India has so far won four Olympic quotas and three in men’s freestyle wrestling, Bajrang is one of them and the others are Deepak Punia and Ravi Dahiya.

The World Championships are scheduled for December this year and both Bajrang and national chief coach men’s freestyle wrestling Jagmander Singh are hopeful that the tournament goes ahead as well as other wrestling events being able to resume.

Bajrang said, “We were in good rhythm before the lockdown was announced. Even now our training is going well but we will only know our level and where we stand when we compete. A player needs to play otherwise they will never know where they stand.”

Jagmander, on his part, is happy to see the progress of the wrestlers since the camp resumed but reiterated that competition will give a better idea of their level.

He said, “From the time training restarted to now, the wrestlers have improved considerably. We started slow but now our training is in full momentum but eventually, we need to tune our training as per the competitions that lie ahead. The true test of where the wrestlers stand will only come when they participate in competitions.”

India has the opportunity to win their remaining Olympic quotas in men’s wrestling (six in Greco-Roman and three in Freestyle) at the Asian and World Qualification tournaments scheduled for next year.

IPL 2020: Batting woes keeping KKR behind

0

If Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are not yet among the top two in the points table in the ongoing IPL season, they have their batting to blame.

The franchise, which is still fourth on the points table, finished with 84 for eight against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday night, losing the match by eight wickets.

It was yet another disappointing show from the batting line-up which has managed to cross the 150-run mark just once in the last four matches.

KKR’s top batsmen have failed miserably in getting good individual scores, and it is evident from the stats.

No team has as few half-centuries as KKR have – six. No one batsman has led the way for them unlike in most other teams.

Opener Shubman Gill, on whom a lot depended, has just two fifties from 10 matches. His strike rate has taken a hit over the last few games too, going below 100 in those games, and forcing him to throw his wicket away.

Skipper Eoin Morgan does not have even a single half-century in 10 matches although he has maintained his average at around 40.

Dinesh Karthik has fared even more poorly. He is averaging just above 16 and has aggregated only 145 over 10 innings. Karthik handed over the captaincy to Morgan ahead of the game against Mumbai Indians on October 16. But since then, his performance has been mixed, clicking once with a 14-ball 29 not out and failing twice.

Worse, Andre Russell who was a man of the tournament last year and had hammered 510 runs at over 56 to be among the top five run-getters besides picking a clutch of wickets, has completely failed with the bat, averaging just 11.5 this time.

Their batsmen’s failure has reflected on the team totals too. Of the top 25 totals made at this year’s IPL, only one belongs to KKR, unlike other teams. Only SunRisers Hyderabad has as less as one in the top 25 totals.

KKR coach Brendon McCullum admitted after the match that the batting hasn’t lived up to expectations.

“I think he (Mohammed Siraj) was able to present the seam and ask a few questions of us, questions which in the past we have answered better than we did,” McCullum said.

“Before the game, we talked about wanting to show strong intent at the top of the order and we lacked intent. That’s something we’re going to have to address… you have to be creative to get yourselves into the game. You’re not going to win too many games from 40-6…”

IPL 13: This wasn’t a season CSK expected, says Bravo

0

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has requested Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans to keep supporting the team in what has turned out to be a forgettable season for the three-time champion in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) edition.

CSK has won just three out of the 10 matches they have played so far and their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are quite bleak. In addition to that, Bravo has been ruled out of the remaining matches of IPL 2020 following a groin injury.

“It’s sad news, it’s sad to be leaving my team CSK. To all our CSK fans, I want you all to keep encouraging the team, keep supporting, all the true die-hard CSK fans,” Bravo said in a video message uploaded by CSK on their Twitter handle.

“This wasn’t a season we expected or our fans wanted, but we gave it our best. Sometimes, despite giving our best, the results don’t show. Keep supporting us and I can guarantee you we’re going to come back stronger and better like champions. One of the most successful franchises, I feel we should be proud to be members and fans of CSK,” he added.

CSK chief executive officer Kasi Viswanathan on Wednesday informed that Bravo has suffered a Grade 1 tear to his right groin and will miss the remaining matches. The 37-year-old featured for CSK in just six matches this season, scoring seven runs and picking up six wickets.

Currently placed at the bottom of the table, the three-time champions will next take on Mumbai Indians on Friday in Sharjah.

IPL: Magical spell brings Siraj back into limelight

0

Mohammed Siraj’s international outings have been disappointing. So too have been those in the Indian Premier League. Leading up to the game against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday, Siraj had leaked runs at over 10 an over in the three previous games this season.

After a decent debut year in IPL 2017 with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), he moved to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2018 but the overall performance with the Bangalore-based franchise was anything but impressive. He leaked runs and didn’t get too many wickets over the next two seasons. That problem spilled over to this year too.

On Wednesday, things, however, changed when he took the new ball for the first time in an IPL game since 2017.

The ball swung on a wicket that aided swing. Even though Siraj had been practicing with the new ball in the nets, he didn’t know he’d take the ball first up.

“When I entered the ground, Virat Bhai told me, Miyan ready ho jao (Gentleman, get ready),” Siraj said after the match. “And as I had been practicing at the nets, I had the confidence. It really felt good that the ball moved away, and I began to get natural outswing.”

Skipper Virat Kohli said it was a late call to give Siraj the new ball.

“Was thinking of giving Washy (Washington Sundar). We had the option of the plan to start with Washy and bring (Chris) Morris in the second over then we thought let’s give Siraj the new ball with Morris. Let him set the tone and then let Siraj try and swing the ball,” said Kohli describing what prompted him to give Siraj the new ball.

Siraj said that he was a bowler with natural in-swing but during practice he found that he was getting the ball to move away and he went ahead with it.

While right-handers Rahul Tripathi and Tom Banton too were victims of balls that moved away or straightened, the best sight for him and RCB was reserved for Nitish Rana.

The left-hander has a weakness against the short ball and was probably expecting that with the fieldset for it. But Siraj slipped in one he has been practicing, which would move into a left-handed batsman. Rana was bowled.

It also helped that the RCB team has two good left-handed batsmen in Parthiv Patel and Devdutt Padikkal at whom Siraj had been bowling those deliveries.

Siraj has had a chequered career all through. Before this, he had impressed only by India A and Hyderabad Ranji team. In the only ODI he played, in 2019 in Adelaide, he conceded runs at 7.6 without picking a wicket. In the three T20Is he has played, he leaked runs at over 12 and hasn’t got too many wickets.

But things may change. Ahead of this tournament, Siraj had told media that he is looking at IPL as a platform to come back into the Indian team where competition for pace bowling spot is strong.

On Wednesday too, he reiterated this. “When this IPL began, I thought I will do something magical. And I am glad I did.”

Bishnoi, M. Ashwin: The unlikely, unsung heroes for Kings XI

0

After suffering five consecutive defeats, things were going haywire for Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing IPL. However, it now seems that the franchise has been able to find their mojo back, and have registered three successive wins, including impressive verdicts against table-toppers Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai Indians.

While Punjab entered the tournament as a side with a heavy batting line-up, having the likes of KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, Nicholas Pooran to name a few, they have found unlikely heroes in their two leg-spinners — Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin.

Bishnoi has scalped nine wickets in 10 innings he has bowled in so far and Ashwin has picked up seven wickets in five innings. While the number of wickets might suggest that their contributions towards the team haven’t been that significant, it is their skills and the ability to pick wickets at crucial junctures of a game which has earned them praise from many in the cricket fraternity and have let Rahul play them together in the recent matches.

For Bishnoi, the leg-break bowler who ended as the highest wicket-taker in the U-19 World Cup earlier this year with 17 wickets, his IPL debut season has been like a dream. The 20-year-old has so far bowled 220 deliveries and given away 277 runs, which makes it an economy of 7.91 which is not at all bad considering how T20 cricket is heavily titled towards batsmen.

Kings XI spent Rs 2 crore for Bishnoi and considering his performance so far, the team management must be quite happy with their decision. His victims include the likes of David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Rishabh Pant, Aaron Finch, Eoin Morgan – batsmen who are considered to be well equipped to tackle spin bowling with ease.

“I was a bit nervous in the beginning, but it was more excitement than nervousness for me to make my debut. I just wanted to do well and help my team win,” Bishnoi had said after his IPL debut against Delhi Capitals in which he returned with figures of 1/22.

Having a bowling style similar to that of the head coach and ace leg-spinner Anil Kumble, Bishnoi has been able to keep the batsmen in check, using flippers, top-spinners, and googlies to good effect. Having said that, he has not made excessive use of his special deliveries, thus becoming too predictable and, in the process, has kept the batsmen guessing.

Ashwin, on the other hand, is more experienced in terms of the number of matches compared to Bishnoi. While his IPL experience goes to 27 games across four editions, his best performance seems to be coming under the watchful eyes of Kumble.

The 30-year-old has so far bowled 93 deliveries in which he has conceded 121 runs. He has been used by Rahul in the powerplays and even then, his economy lies at 7.80. The most impressive thing about the leg-spinner has been his strike rate of 13.28, which means he has been picking wickets after every two overs.

Bishnoi’s strike rate, on the other hand, is a little over 23, meaning he has been picking up a wicket after almost every four overs.

Unlike Bishnoi, Ashwin has not only been learning from Kumble, but he has also been taking cues from the spinners from other teams as well, something that he revealed after the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He said he watched closely how Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar bowled.

“The wicket was holding up a bit. It was about executing length. It did have something for spinners. I was watching the ball previous game that RCB played. How their spinners bowled. I took a cue from that,” Ashwin had said after RCB’s game.

While the likes of Rahul, Mayank, and Mohammad Shami still hold the key for Kings XI Punjab, if they have to make it to the playoffs, the performance of Ashwin and Bishnoi is just as crucial considering they have been able to keep the opposition teams in check and chipping in with wickets at crucial junctures of the game. That is something that Kumble would desperately hope the duo continues to do in the remaining games.

Amazon’s ‘I Have Space’ aids local stores expand business amid pandemic

0

The ongoing pandemic and the lockdowns have had a severe impact on local stores and as the restrictions were lifted, they started getting back to business. Several offline stores and retailers have also integrated themselves with the online segment to expand their business avenues to an omnichannel network.

In this process, Amazon India’s ‘I Have Space’ (IHS) program has played a major role with over 28,000 neighborhood and Kirana stores in nearly 350 towns and cities in the country.

Under the program, the e-commerce major partners with local store owners to provide pickup and delivery services to customers across different cities within a 2-4 kilometer radius of the store.

On average, Amazon India’s store partners deliver between 30 to 40 packages a day, earning a fixed amount per delivery.

Ramadevi, owner of Chennai-based Aarogyamatha Automobiles who enrolled herself into the program in 2019 said: “The regular income from this program has really been a blessing for my family. I know my local neighborhood and I felt that this was the perfect job for me.”

The average income earned through the program by a neighborhood store is Rs 12,000-Rs 15,000.

Anita Dave, owner of A1 Collection clothing store at Mulund in Mumbai enrolled herself as an I Have Space Partner in 2015 when she was the sole bread earner in her family.

Saying that the IHS program has changed her family’s life, she mentioned that there are several measures taken by Amazon for the safety of women’s delivery partners.

Talking of the impact on business during the lockdown when her shop was shut, she said: “That was a difficult period for us as a family. Thankfully, the earnings from the IHS program helped us sustain ourselves.”

Speaking on the program, an Amazon spokesperson said: “We are humbled to see how in this unprecedented time, ‘I Have Space’ program has helped us extend our reach to the customers as well as unlock the entrepreneurial potential of store owners, allowing them to supplement their regular income and generate more footfalls in their stores.”

I will 100% return to cricket administration: Ruchir Modi

0

Ruchir Modi, son of Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi and till recently president of the Alwar District Cricket Association, is only taking a sabbatical from cricket administration and says he would be back “100 percent” after a couple of years.

Ruchir, 26, decided against contesting this month’s election of Rajasthan’s Alwar district because there was “too much politics in the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA)” while claiming that a majority of the RCA constituent districts wanted him to contest.

“I am not completely ruling myself out, 100 percent. I mean I don’t see myself getting involved this year and the next year. I see myself being very tied up with family business at the moment. But 100 percent I am not going to rule out the possibility in future,” Ruchir told IANS in an exclusive interview from London.

Ruchir also said that cricketers of Alwar district were being targeted vis-à-vis selection in various teams, including that for Ranji Trophy, because he was at odds with RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot, son of Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. He said for now he would instead concentrate on his family business spread across India and overseas.

“The elections for Alwar were coming up this year. I decided it would make more sense, for the moment, firstly for Alwar for them to have a president in place to actually have the support of the state [RCA] because it is very important to have the support of the RCA for every district. No matter what I could do for them to be selected in the Ranji Trophy team, for players to be selected in the Rajasthan team, for them to move forward, and come into the RCA Academy, I need to leave the door open to them. That was one of the main reasons,” he said.

“The other reason is that there is too much politics in the RCA. In today’s time, you have seen Ashok Gehlot’s son come in now [on October 15]. I don’t want to get into the game of playing politics. I wanted to something for the RCA; I didn’t get a chance to do that now. But I am not ruling out the possibility of doing anything in the future with the RCA,” he emphasized.

Ruchir clarified that he wasn’t ready to get involved in a legal battle to remain in cricket administration because the RCA has suspended a few districts that owed allegiance to the Modi faction in the association.

“I also don’t think I will get a fair chance to do what I want to for the RCA and would be looked at coming into the RCA body where I’d be looked at as if I am coming in as my own person today. It seems to me that every move I make in the RCA or everything I do it seems to be that people think my father is controlling me from the back and, therefore, they are suspending Alwar and other districts, and they would not even give me a chance to stand in the current state elections [held on October 15]. So, instead of going into a legal battle I said ‘let us look at what good I can add’ and at the moment I don’t think I could add that much to the RCA,” he said.

“So, it made much more of a sense to take a backseat approach and not contest the elections. Most of the – I would say 17 of the 33 RCA affiliated — districts are calling me and messaging me for the last four months to put my candidacy forward, and saying how could you give this up. I just think it was the right thing to do, firstly, for cricket in Rajasthan, for the people of Rajasthan, and also for my personal career, what I have to do in the months ahead in terms of business,” he explained.

What were the reasons for which Alwar’s suspension?

“Alwar’s suspension was quite clear — for no reason except for the fact that I am Lalit Modi’s son. That was the only reason Alwar was suspended, and so was Nagaur and Partapgarh districts because it [RCA] is under the impression that three districts are controlled not by anyone but Lalit Modi and so that took action suspending these districts. It is unfortunate that people look at things in a way that you cannot do anything on your own,” he rued.

“Ultimately, I wanted to come in — I am 26 years old — I wanted to leave my own mark and do my own thing in Rajasthan. But people, unfortunately, due to my dad’s fame and publicity — and whatever it maybe — it seems to be that I will never get the chance of doing that independently without people thinking that I am doing it on his behalf. That’s the only reason Alwar has been suspended. They gave a reason that the district is indirectly or directly controlled by Lalit Modi. That was the actual reasoning they have given on paper,” he pointed out.

On September 6 last year, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had reinstated the RCA – the Indian cricket board had suspended Lalit Modi for alleged irregularities in 2010 – conditionally. The few main conditions were that the RCA would not permit Lalit Modi to associate himself either “directly or indirectly”, that it would “terminate membership/association of Lalit Kumar Modi in any capacity with the RCA and its affiliates”; and, that the association would “disaffiliate any RCA affiliate that associates itself with Lalit Modi”.

Now the Congress party is in power in Rajasthan and Lalit Modi was considered close to the previous state government of the BJP. Ruchir alleges it is all politics in cricket.

“In terms of the law, I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong by standing for election and wanting to do something myself. But at the end of the way people don’t look at it that day. Previously, when Lalit Modi was the RCA president, prior to my election in 2016, the BCCI suspended the RCA, and no funds were coming to the RCA at all for some years. I don’t think that was legally tenable either. But at the end of the day, I can’t argue and I am not a judge to decide what’s legal and what’s not,” said Ruchir.

“I don’t think I have done anything wrong. No one has challenged me in a court of law for what I have done, and I don’t think my father has done anything legally wrong either because I don’t think any court in India, 10 years since his departure, has convicted him of any wrongdoings whatsoever. So, at the end of the day, it doesn’t make sense. But I can’t change the way politics is run in the BCCI or in the RCA,” he averred.

Politics apart, it seems IPL and Lalit Modi, who conceived the IPL in 2007 and launched it with the BCCI’s help the next year, can’t be separated. Ruchir informed that his father was following the ongoing 13th edition in the United Arab Emirates closely from his London residence. “He is watching all the matches and he is regularly speaking on them in the social media, his Instagram,” he said.

Soyuz spacecraft brings 3 ISS crew members to Earth

0

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft on Thursday safely brought NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and cosmonauts Ivan Vagner and Anatoly Ivanishin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos from International Space Station (ISS) to Earth.

The crew landed just south of the town of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, at 8.54 am Kazakhstan time, NASA said.

During this latest mission, Cassidy served as commander of Expedition 63 and welcomed SpaceX Demo-2 crew members Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley of NASA — the first astronauts to launch to the space station on an American spacecraft from American soil since the retirement of the space shuttle in 2011.

Cassidy and Behnken completed four spacewalks, totaling 23 hours and 37 minutes, to upgrade station batteries.

The final spacewalk was the 10th for both astronauts, making them two of only four US astronauts to complete 10 spacewalks.

Cassidy now has spent a total of 378 days in space, the fifth-highest among US astronauts.

When Cassidy, Ivanishin, and Vagner departed the space station, Expedition 64 officially began on the station, with Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Ryzhikov serving as station commander and NASA’s Kate Rubins and Roscosmos’ Sergey Kud-Sverchkov serving as flight engineers.

In November, the Expedition 64 crew is scheduled to welcome NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 — NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Shannon Walker, and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi.

Crew-1 will be the first long-duration mission to fly as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Programme and mark the return of America’s capability to regularly launch astronauts from US soil.

For nearly 20 years, the International Space Station has been inhabited continuously by astronauts testing technologies, conducting research, and developing the skills needed to explore farther from Earth, including to the Moon and Mars.

Expedition 1 arrived at the International Space Station on November 2, 2000.

Delivery start-up Pidge to launch services in Mumbai

0

After one year of operating successfully in the Delhi-NCR region, delivery start-up Pidge on Thursday announced that the company will soon start its delivery service in Mumbai and is looking at 1,500 delivery staff under its payroll by the end of the year.

Pidge, within a year of being operational, counts more than 80 businesses including Taj Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, The Big Chill Cafe, and many others as its customers and has completed two lakh deliveries.

The start-up is currently operational in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad and is the only on-demand, instant delivery, and radius-free service available, the company said in a statement.

Mumbai residents will now be able to enjoy this radius-free and secure service starting across Mumbai, Pune, Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Thane.

“For Pidge, Mumbai was the obvious choice after the Delhi-NCR region, given the similar dynamics complexities. We are excited and optimistic that we’ll be able to delight businesses and consumers in Mumbai the same way as we did in Delhi and NCR region,” said Ratnesh Verma, Founder, and Leader, Pidge.

According to the company, to double up the security, the package is packed and sealed by the customers themselves and Pidge follows it up with live tracking of the package in transit and a one-time password (OTP) process as soon as the package is delivered.

“In Pidge, we have found partners who not only seek to provide top quality services but are also passionately committed to achieving it,” said Aseem Grover, Founder of Big Chill Cafe.

Swiggy onboards 7K new restaurants, delivers over 10 cr orders

0

Online food delivery platform Swiggy on Thursday revealed it has onboarded more than 7,000 new restaurants a month on Swiggy which is 3,000 more than the pre-covid times, along with delivering 10 crore orders since the beginning of the lockdown.

Nearly 6,000 new restaurants are small and medium restaurants compared to 3,500 in the pre-covid era and there has been a five-fold increase per month in onboarding fine-dine restaurants for online deliveries, Swiggy said.

“Our pan-India food delivery has recovered around 80-85 percent of pre-Covid order value. In many markets, it is at 95 percent, some even over 100 per cent,” the company said in a statement.

In the IPL 13 season, Swiggy is seeing major cities reaching pre-covid recovery values.

During the ongoing cricketing season, the Tier 2, 3 cities have performed exceptionally well recording a double-digit growth over the first weekend itself, the company informed.

Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad are the most active metro cities while Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Lucknow are the most active tier-2 cities this cricket season.

“Almost over 200 cities have now reached 90 percent of their pre-Covid GMV (gross merchandise value) levels with more than 70 cities seeing a full recovery to their pre-Covid levels,” Swiggy said.

Certain micro pockets within the country have also reached 200 percent of their pre- COVID value.

Big food delivery markets such as Bengaluru and Chennai are seeing very fast recovery.

However, due to a lot of the customers migrating from these metros into tier 2 and 3 cities, they have reached their 80 percent GMV levels.

“With offices resuming operations, we can expect the working population to migrate back to the metros in the near future and reach full recovery,” Swiggy said.

Swiggy’s Jumpstart Package has supported over 50,000 restaurants in the last four months.

“Over 15,000 restaurants have leveraged Jumpstart for the ‘Best Safety Standards’ tag and over 10,000 restaurants leveraged it for boosting their business,” it said.

Sydney, Canberra to host white-ball leg of Aus-Ind series: report

0

The limited-overs leg of India’s upcoming tour of Australia will be played in Sydney and Canberra next month.

According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Cricket Australia and the New South Wales state government reached an agreement on Thursday for the Indian team and Australian players returning from the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) being held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to quarantine in Sydney while also being granted access to nearby training facilities.

The IPL final is slated to be held on November 10, the venue of which is yet to be announced.

Confirmation of quarantine protocols, which arrived after NSW government approval on Thursday bit still requires a final sign-off from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

As per the tentative schedule, the first two ODIs are set to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground on November 27 and 29 while the third ODI on December 1 and the first T20I on December 4 will take place at Canberra’s Manuka Oval. The teams will then return to Sydney for the final two T20Is at the SCG on December 6 and 8.

After that, both the teams will compete in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, currently scheduled to begin with a pink-ball Test to be held at the Adelaide Oval between December 17 and 21.

Women now represent 28.6% of Microsoft’s global workforce

Women now represent 28.6 percent of the global Microsoft workforce, an increase of 1 percentage point since last year.

However, the tech giant admitted that racial and ethnic minority communities have largely seen incremental progress and there is still much work to be done.

According to Microsoft’s ‘2020 Diversity and Inclusion’ report released on Wednesday, Asian employees, which include more than a dozen different ethnic groups, represent 34.7 percent of its US workforce — an increase of 1.6 percentage points compared to last year.

According to a survey of Microsoft’s employees in the US, 6.1 percent self-identify as having a disability.

“Black or African American employees represent 4.9 percent of our US workforce, up 0.3 percentage points since 2019,” said Lindsay-Rae McIntyre, Chief Diversity Officer at Microsoft.

Hispanic and Latinx employees represent 6.6 percent of Microsoft’s US workforce.

“We see a clear opportunity to improve representation across all levels and roles, especially for Black and African American and Hispanic and Latinx employees, Microsoft said.

The report focuses on three core areas in addition to the data: the ways that diversity and inclusion are integrated into our employee pandemic response, our commitments to addressing racial injustice, and our investment in the Allyship at Microsoft learning path.

An ally is somebody who intentionally engages with empathy and care to support someone else in the way in which they would want to be supported.

“Grounded in neuroscience, the Allyship at Microsoft learning path helps us understand ourselves and encourages us to take responsibility for our individual learning,” McIntyre said.

What started in July 2019 as a voluntary learning program has since evolved into a required training that provides our more than 160,000 global employees a shared language and understanding of the role we each play in creating a culture of inclusion, she informed.

Tesla launches ‘Full Self Driving’ beta to select drivers

0

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed the company has started rolling out its next-gen Full Self Driving (FSD) set of features to a limited number of experts and careful drivers.

The customers in Tesla’s Early Access Programme will receive software updates, which will give drivers access to Autopilot’s ‘partially’ automated driver assistance system on city streets.

The Early Access program serves as a testing platform to help fix software bugs.

More Tesla owners would get the update as the time passes, with the goal of a “wide release” by the end of the year.

“Regarding the Full Self-Driving beta release, the Autopilot team, again, is just a really all-star team. I spent a lot of time with the Autopilot team. And there’s a lot of really talented people in that team who have worked incredibly hard to make the — to get the beta release out,” Musk said during the company’s Q3 earnings call on Wednesday.

Musk has been talking about ‘Full Self Driving’ a lot in the past couple of years, calling it an investment in the future that will become far more valuable once fully autonomous cars get regulatory approval.

Earlier, he explained that with feature-complete FSD, the car will be able to drive without human intervention but it would still be supervised.

Tesla also rolled out the 2019.40.2 version of its software to some electric vehicle owners and this update includes features like Adjacent Lane Speed Adjustments and Stop Sign Detection that are required for FSD.

Hits & misses: Story of big price tags in IPL 2020

0

The price tag that gets attached to the player during the auctions ahead of an Indian Premier League (IPL) edition is often a reflection of the season they have had and, in some cases, the star power they bring to the team. In the case of names that grab headlines, their performance in the preceding series often holds little value.

Either way, what the price tag is not, is an accurate prediction of how the player will do when the tournament finally starts and two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have learned this lesson in the first half of the ongoing IPL season in UAE.

KKR shelled out Rs 15.5 crore to secure the services of Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins in December 2019, nudging the sum of Rs 14.5 crore Rising Pune Supergiant paid for England all-rounder Ben Stokes in 2017 to second place in the list of most expensive foreign players in IPL history.

Cummins’ price tag was justified — he is a mainstay in Australia’s bowling attack across format and has been the no.1 Test bowler in the world since August 2019. He is also a capable lower-order batsman, with experts often stating how criminally underrated his talent with the bat is. KKR, however, would have bought him with the hopes that he would be their chief source of wickets.

Instead, Cummins has managed to take just three wickets so far in 10 matches this season and his most noteworthy contribution came, ironically, with the bat — the 27-year-old pacer scored an unbeaten 53 to push a woeful KKR to 148/5 against the dominant Mumbai Indians.

If they aren’t careful, KKR will have only four more games left this season to get the most of the ace fast bowler in Cummins.

His Australia teammate Glenn Maxwell has had a topsy-turvy time as well at Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). KXIP paid Rs 10.75 crore at the auctions to keep him in the team and while he has proven to be useful for them in their recent upturn in fortunes, the 2020 edition of the IPL is yet to get a characteristic Maxwell winning. KXIP captain KL Rahul, however, feels that there is reason to back Maxwell regardless of his performances.

“Glenn has been batting well in the nets. He is a great team man and we know the balance he brings to the table,” Rahul had said after their win against Delhi Capitals in their previous game. The 32-year-old had scored 32 in the match which proved crucial in KXIP’s win.

“We know what Maxwell can do when he comes good, he gives solidarity to the team and he balances out the team really well. To have Maxi come in the form is a very good sign and every batsman loves to hit the ball and spend some time in the middle,” he had added.

Not all big buys have been duds though. South African Chris Morris has made himself indispensable since first playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) this season against Chennai Super Kings on October 10. He took four wickets against Rajasthan Royals and conceded 16 runs in four overs, which included a maiden, on Thursday when RCB pinned down KKR for 84/8 in 20 overs. He was RCB’s most expensive buy-in in December at Rs 10 crore.

West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer was demoted from the Delhi Capitals top- order after their first two games of the season and has since put in useful shifts with the bat, apart from being a livewire on the field. He played a big role in DC’s 46-run win over Rajasthan Royals on October 9, scoring 45 runs off 24 balls. Batting mostly at number five or six, Hetmyer has thus far scored 101 runs at an average of 25.25 and, more importantly, has maintained a strike rate of 150.74.

At Rs 8 crore, Australia’s Nathan Coulter-Nile was defending champions Mumbai Indians’ most expensive buy but could not play for them in their first seven matches due to what captain Rohit Sharma described in the season opener as “some niggles”. Coulter-Nile has recorded figures of 1/51 and 0/33 in his first two outings, also scoring an unbeaten 24 in the latter. It is yet to be seen whether MI stick with Coulter-Nile or is only using him in order to relieve some of the workloads on James Pattinson.

Covid vax trials can’t tell if the shots save lives: BMJ expert

0

Vaccines are being hailed as the solution to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the trials currently underway are not designed to tell us if they will save lives, according to a drug development expert from the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Writing in The BMJ medical journal, Associate Editor Peter Doshi, said that several Covid-19 vaccine trials are now in their most advanced (phase 3) stage, but what will it mean exactly when a vaccine is declared “effective”?

Many may assume that successful phase 3 studies will mean we have a proven way of keeping people from getting very sick and dying from Covid-19. And a robust way to interrupt viral transmission.

Yet the current phase 3 trials are not actually set up to prove either, Doshi said.

“None of the trials currently underway are designed to detect a reduction in any serious outcome such as hospitalizations, intensive care use, or deaths. Nor are the vaccines being studied to determine whether they can interrupt transmission of the virus,” he wrote.

He explained that all ongoing phase 3 trials for which details have been released are evaluating mild, not severe, disease — and they will be able to report final results once around 150 participants develop symptoms.

In Pfizer and Moderna’s trials, for example, individuals with only a cough and positive lab test would bring those trials one event closer to their completion.

Yet Doshi argued that vaccine manufacturers have done little to dispel the notion that the severe Covid-19 was what was being assessed.

Moderna, for example, called hospitalizations a “key secondary endpoint” in statements to the media. But Tal Zaks, Chief Medical Officer at Moderna, told The BMJ that their trial lacks adequate statistical power to assess that endpoint.

Zaks confirmed that Moderna’s trial will not demonstrate prevention of hospitalization because the size and duration of the trial would need to be vastly increased to collect the necessary data.

But Doshi raised another important issue — that few or perhaps none of the current vaccine trials appear to be designed to find out whether there is a benefit in the elderly, despite their obvious vulnerability to Covid-19.

If the frail elderly is not enrolled into vaccine trials in sufficient numbers to determine whether there is a reduction in cases in this population, “there can be little basis for assuming any benefit against hospitalisation or mortality,” he warned.

Doshi said that we still have time to advocate for changes to ensure the ongoing trials address the questions that most need answering.

Tesla logs 5th straight profitable quarter, breaks delivery record

0

Elon Musk-run Tesla registered its fifth straight profitable quarter, raking $331 million in profit in its third quarter, delivering 139,300 vehicles. The electric car-maker generated $8.7 billion in revenue.

The company beat the previous record of 112,000 vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter last year.

Tesla also produced 145,036 vehicles during the third quarter — a huge increase over the 82,272 vehicles that were made during the second quarter this year amid pandemic.

“We’re making progress on the three major factories. We’re continuing to expand Shanghai significantly, which is going incredibly well at the Tesla China team,” Musk said during the earnings call.

“And then we’re under construction in Berlin and Texas and Austin. So we’re also making good progress there. I should make a point that for Berlin and Austin, we do expect to start delivering cars from those factories next year”.

Tesla’s cash balance increased to $14.5 billion, which includes free cash flows of $1.4 billion, its highest yet. It’s operating cash flows were $2.4 billion, including a $600 million benefit from working capital.

“We’re also aiming to achieve our original 2020 guidance of 500,000 deliveries despite the operational interruptions earlier in the year,” said Zachary Kirkhorn, Chief Financial Officer.

Musk said that he wants to make his cars more affordable.

“It is really important to separate out affordability from value for money. If the car is too expensive or any given product is too expensive, then people don’t have enough money in the bank account, they simply can’t buy it no matter what the value proposition is,” he noted.

“So it is important to lower the prices in order for people to literally just have enough money to buy it”.
