It’s a great feeling: Stafanie after breaching 3K T20I runs milestone

0

“I’m not a stats person but when it came up on the big screen it was a really good feeling,” said Stafanie Taylor as she recounted the historic moment of becoming only the second cricketer — male or female — and first West Indian to score 3,000 T20I runs.

Stafanie reached the milestone during the second T20I against England which her team lost by 47 runs at the Incora County Ground on Wednesday. In 105 matches, the all-rounder has scored 3,020 runs at an average of 35.95. Only New Zealand’s Suzie Bates is ahead of her in T20I cricket, having scored 3,243 runs in 119 matches.

“It shows the amount of work that we as female cricketers have been doing over the years and to see that a lot of people have highlighted what we have done, it’s a great feeling…,” said Stafanie knowing that the only person ahead of her is also a woman, as per a Cricket West Indies media release.

The average cricket fan may not pay much attention to statistics but Stafanie actually has more T20I runs than Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle, who have 2,794 and 1,627 respectively.

Seven wickets away from 100 T20I wickets, the all-rounder will join her teammate Anisa Mohammed (first cricketer to take 100 T20I wickets) as the only West Indians to reach a century of T20I wickets. When she achieves this, coupled with crossing 3,000 runs, she will be in a class of her own as the first cricketer to achieve this historic double.

“I would love to see some young players coming through, integrating with the old folks…we definitely need a feeder system. That’s the one thing we lack…when you look around the world to places like Australia, India, and England who have been doing it really well with young players coming through the system…and when they reach the international level it’s nothing new or foreign to them…,” said Stafanie while indicating she would love to see more young players coming through women’s cricket.

IOC President Thomas Bach to receive Seoul Peace Prize

0

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach is set to receive the Seoul Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

In a media release, the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation said that as a firm believer in the spirit of the Olympics, Bach has devoted himself to promoting peace through sport.

The foundation stated that Bach was instrumental in ensuring North Korea’s participation in the Pyeongchang 2018 Games, taking place in neighboring South Korea.

It also noted his role in building relationships between South Korea, Japan, and China who will host three Olympic Games in a row with Tokyo 2020 re-scheduled for 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

“IOC President Bach has continuously supported refugees through the creation of the Refugee Olympic Team and the Olympic Refuge Foundation. He contributed to promoting the human rights of refugees by raising global awareness of refugee issues and renewing the world’s perspective on refugees,” the foundation said.

Bach will be presented an award, a plaque, and an honorarium of $200,000 at the award ceremony of the ’15th Seoul Peace Prize” which would be held “within the year”.

The IOC chief, on his part, said it was a great honor to receive the award.

“This prize belongs to the entire IOC and the whole of the Olympic Movement because, without the support of so many, these achievements for peace through sport could never have been accomplished,” said Bach.

“All of us in the Olympic Movement take this prestigious prize as an encouragement to further strengthen our efforts to make a contribution to peace, solidarity and the unity of humanity, in all our diversity, through sport,” he added.

Google services went down in US, server crash blamed

0

As soon as Google users in the US experienced a widespread service disruption on Thursday evening, the search engine giant shared a brief technical explanation of what happened.

“As has been noticed, several Google services were down for some users from 6:00 to 6:23 p.m. PDT. A pool of servers that route traffic to application backends crashed and users on that particular pool experienced the outage. GCP was not affected,” the company said in a statement.

Several Google and YouTube services were impacted by an approximately 20-minute outage.

The outages seemed to be focused around the US east coast, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks internet disruptions.

The Downdetector heat maps for Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, and other Google services showed a significant number of people having trouble accessing those websites.

“Never thought I’d reach a point in my life where Gmail and Drive being down would give me this level of anxiety. This is peak adulthood,” a user said in a tweet.

“Personally I love it when Google Classroom goes down just at the moment when my kids are trying to upload their homework, so everyone freaks out and screams at me when I can’t fix it,” said another user.

In addition, the outages seemed to affect corporate customers of Google’s cloud computing service.

Twitter to launch ‘read before you retweet’ prompt very soon

0

To help promote informed discussion and reduce the spread of fake, harmful content, Twitter will very soon launch a new prompt on Android for the users to open and read the article first before retweeting.

After a small experiment with a set of users, Twitter found that people open articles 40 percent more often after seeing the prompt.

“People opening articles before RTing increased by 33 percent,” the company said in a tweet on Thursday.

Some people didn’t end up RTing after opening the article, which was fine for Twitter as “some Tweets are best left in drafts”.

In June, Twitter introduced a test feature on Android to promote “informed discussion” on the platform.

If a user decides to retweet a write-up without opening the link and reading it, Twitter would prompt him or her to read it first before sharing.

“To help promote informed discussion, we’re testing a new prompt on Android –– when you Retweet an article that you haven’t opened on Twitter, we may ask if you’d like to open it first”.

Kayvon Beykpour, who is Product Lead at Twitter, said that it’s easy for links/articles to go viral on Twitter.

“This can be powerful but sometimes dangerous, especially if people haven’t read the content they’re spreading. This feature (on Android for now) encourages people to read a linked article prior to Retweeting it,” he said.

The company said that it will make the prompt smaller after people have seen it once.

“Working on bringing these prompts to everyone globally soon,” Twitter said.

In May, Twitter began a test that allows users to limit who can reply to their tweets on Android, iOS, and web apps.

Twitter is also testing a new option that will show its user’s posts have been retweeted with a comment.

Facebook purges 3 Russia-based fake networks

0

Facebook has pulled down three separate networks for violating its policy against foreign or government interference that originated in Russia and created fictitious media accounts and along with driving people to other websites controlled by the state-backed hackers.

These operations worked across many internet services and attempted to hire contributors and seed their stories with news organizations.

“We removed 214 Facebook users, 35 Pages, 18 Groups and 34 Instagram accounts for violating our policy against foreign or government interference which is coordinated inauthentic behavior on behalf of a foreign or government entity,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Security Policy at Facebook said in a statement on Thursday.

This activity originated in Russia and focused primarily on Syria and Ukraine, and to a lesser extent on Turkey, Japan, Armenia, Georgia, Belarus, and Moldova. A small portion of this activity focused on the UK and the US.

“In each case, the people behind this activity coordinated with one another and used fake accounts as a central part of their operations to mislead people about who they are and what they are doing, and that was the basis for our action,” Gleicher said.

The social network also removed one Page, five Facebook accounts, one Group, and three Instagram accounts. This small network originated in Russia and focused primarily on Turkey and Europe, and also on the US.

“These accounts posed as locals based in Turkey, Canada, and the US. They also recruited people to write for their website. This network had almost no following on our platforms when we removed it”.

The third network — 23 Facebook accounts, 6 Pages, and 8 Instagram accounts — also originated in Russia and focused on global audiences and neighboring countries including Belarus.

“We’ve seen deceptive campaigns target journalists and public figures in the past, including as part of hack-and-leak operations,” Facebook said.

Kenyan runner Patrick Siele slapped with ban for doping

0

Kenyan long-distance runner Patrick Siele has been handed a ban of three years and six months by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for doping.

The AIU said in a statement that Siele ran away from anti-doping personnel and an independent witness confirmed that he “hurdled a fence to escape from the compound” in Kapsabet in west Kenya on December 18, 2019. His sanction has been backdated to March 16, 2020.

“The AIU has banned Kenyan long-distance runner Patrick Siele for three years & six months from 16 March 2020, for evading, refusing or failing to submit to sample collection, a violation of the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules,” AIU said on their official Twitter handle on Thursday.

AIU further said although Siele, 24, was subject to a four-year ban, he admitted to the violation, hence a reduction of the sanction by six months.

Siele joins the long list of Kenyan athletes to be sanctioned in recent years, including 2008 Olympic 1,500m champion Asbel Kiprop, former Boston and Chicago Marathon winner Rita Jeptoo and 2016 Olympic marathon champion Jemimah Sumgong.

‘Dean Jones had a significant impact on the game of cricket’

0

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed grief at the passing of former Australia international Dean Jones.

On Thursday, Jones – who was part of the Star Sports commentary panel for the 13th Indian Premier League (IPL) edition being held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) – died in Mumbai after suffering a cardiac arrest.

“We are extremely sad to hear of Dean’s sudden death and I would like to extend our deep condolences to his family and friends on behalf of the ICC,” ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement.

“Dean was a prolific batter playing in 52 Tests and 164 ODIs and was part of the 1987 Australia team who won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He had a significant impact on the game of cricket as a player, as an advocate for the development of the sport as a coach, and latterly in his role as a broadcaster. He will be sorely missed by all those in the cricket family,” he added.

He featured in 52 Tests, scoring 3,631 runs at an average of 46.55. In 164 ODIs, he made 6,068 runs, at 44.61, with seven hundred and 46 fifties.

One of his most memorable Test innings came in 1986 when in the heat and humidity of Chennai, he battled exhaustion and illness to make a heroic 210 in what would be only the second tied Test ever.

That was just his third Test, coming two years after his debut against West Indies in 1984. With plenty to prove, he came out at No.3, and stayed in the middle for 330 minutes, despite being sick on the field and finding himself in hospital at the end of the knock. Incidentally, he was sick the night before his Test debut too and called the 48 he made in his first innings on a difficult pitch one his best knocks.

He retired from international cricket in 1994 and after that, he pursued an interest in golf. He went on to coach New Zealand, Afghanistan, and teams in leagues in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. He was also was a regular in commentary boxes around the world.

IPL: Kohli fined for slow over-rate against Kings XI

0

Virat Kohli, captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their 97-run defeat to Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain Virat Kohli has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 match against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on 24 September 2020,” the league said in a statement.

“As it was his team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Kohli was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.

On Thursday evening, Kohli opted to field first against Kings XI, operating with three fast bowlers in Dale Steyn, Umesh Yadav, and Navdeep Saini at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Batting first, Kings XI posted a monstrous target of 207 for the RCB, riding on a brilliant century from skipper KL Rahul who played an unbeaten knock of 132 runs off just 69 balls. The innings lasted a little over an hour and 50 minutes.

Chasing the target, RCB struggled right from the start and were eventually bundled out for 109 in the 17th over.

While Kings XI will next face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, RCB will lock horns with Mumbai Indians on Monday.

Flamengo asks for match postponement as 16 players positive for Covid-19

0

Flamengo has asked the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to postpone their match against Palmeiras on Sunday after 16 players tested positive for coronavirus.

The defending Brazilian and Copa Libertadores champions said they had only nine outfield players available for the top flight fixture at Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, reports Xinhua news agency.

“This is an exceptional situation,” club lawyer Rodrigo Dunshee said in a video posted on Flamengo’s Twitter handle. “It is very important to end this at the root. The correct measure is to delay this game.”

The CBF did not immediately respond to the request.

The outbreak follows Flamengo’s week-long trip to Ecuador for a Copa Libertadores double-header against Independiente del Valle and Barcelona SC.

The Rubronegro reported 11 positive cases in their traveling squad after losing to Independiente 5-0 in Quito last Thursday. They beat Barcelona 2-1 in Guayaquil on Tuesday despite being forced to field a team mostly comprising reserves.

In addition to the infected players, several Flamengo officials and members of the coaching staff – including head coach Domenec Torrent – have tested positive for the virus in the past week.

Brazil has the world’s second-highest Covid-19 death toll behind the United States, with more than 139,000 fatalities.

Facebook employees can’t use political images as profile pics

0

Ahead of the US election in November, Facebook has tightened its policies around employee communication within the Workplace platform, the company’s internal social network, banning political images in the profile photos.

The change would prohibit employees from setting their profile pictures to images that promote specific political candidates or express solidarity with causes such as Black Lives Matter, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The company said on Thursday that the move will be “accompanied by restrictions in the ways employees can express their opinions on controversial social topics on Facebook’s internal Workplace communications tool”.

“What we have heard from our employees is that they want the option to join debates on social and political issues rather than see them unexpectedly in their work feed,” Facebook spokesman Joe Osborne said in a statement.

“So we’re updating our policies and work tools to make sure our people have both voice and choice.”

Facebook CEO said last week that new measures will ensure that Black employees and other underrepresented communities don’t face a hostile environment when they come to work.

Employees will still be able to express themselves through frames around their photos.

The new rules will also expand the company’s definition of harassment.

“The company will prohibit any communication that is insensitive, degrading or derogatory and could create a hostile work environment for those in a protected class,” reports CNBC.

The social network said it will also increase its support for the moderation of nonofficial Workplace groups.

Amazon goes big on Cloud game streaming with Luna

Taking on Google Stadia, Apple Arcade, and Microsoft xCloud, Amazon has introduced Luna, a new Cloud gaming service that will run on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The Luna Controller with Cloud Direct technology is simple and intuitive. The controller is Alexa-enabled and connects directly to the cloud to effortlessly control your game.

“In fact, we removed 20 milliseconds of roundtrip latency via Luna Controller with Cloud Direct technology vs. a local Bluetooth connection when playing Luna on a Fire TV Stick,” the Amazon Devices & Services team said in a statement late on Thursday.

Players can easily switch between screens — such as Fire TV to a mobile phone — without additional pairing or configuration changes.

The company also introduced the Luna+ game channel.

During early access, people will have popular games like Control, Resident Evil 7, GRID, Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair, and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

“Customers can request early access starting today. Luna+ will be offered at an introductory price of $5.99 per month during the early access period and Luna Controller will be available for an introductory price of $49.99.

Amazon also announced a new gaming channel with leading global video game publisher Ubisoft, available directly through Luna.

The Ubisoft channel will be available later this fall.

Amazon owns Twitch, one of the most popular live streaming services in the world with nearly 10 billion hours of video watched in 2019.

Inside the Luna experience, people will see Twitch streams for all the games in the service, and from Twitch, they can instantly start playing games.

In July, AWS announced the general availability of its Twitch-inspired Interactive Video Service (IVS) that will help customers set up live, interactive video streams for a web or mobile app in just a few minutes.

Critical vulnerability in Instagram found, fixed

0

Researchers at cybersecurity firm Check Point on Thursday said that they had found a critical vulnerability in the Instagram app that would have given an attacker the ability to take over a victim’s account.

Discovered earlier this year, the vulnerability could have allowed hackers to turn the phones of the victims into a spying tool, simply by sending them a malicious image file.

When the image is saved and opened in the Instagram app, the exploit would give the hacker full access to the victim’s Instagram messages and images, allowing them to post or delete images at will, as well as giving access to the phone’s contacts, camera, and location data.

After the findings were disclosed to Facebook and the Instagram teams, Facebook issued a patch to remediate the issue on the newer versions of the Instagram application on all platforms, Check Point said.

“We strongly encourage all Instagram users to ensure they are using the latest Instagram app version and to update if any new version is available,” Check Point said.

A part of the Facebook family of apps, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms globally, with over 100 million photos uploaded every day, and nearly one billion monthly active users.

The researchers decided to review the security of Instagram’s mobile app given its popularity and wide-ranging permissions that the app seeks from users.

The research revealed a critical vulnerability that might allow the attackers what is technically referred to as “remote code execution,” or RCE.

This vulnerability can allow an attacker to perform any action they wish in the Instagram app.

So how does such a popular application include vulnerabilities, when huge amounts of time and resources are invested in developing it?

The answer is that most modern app developers do not actually write the entire application on their own: if they did so it would take years to write an application.

Instead, they use third-party libraries to handle common (and often complicated) tasks such as image processing, sound processing, network connectivity, and so on.

This frees the developers to handle only the coding tasks, which represent the apps core business logic.

However, this relies on those third-party libraries being completely trustworthy and secure.

The Check Point researchers examined the third-party libraries used by Instagram.

And the vulnerability they found was in the way that Instagram used Mozjpeg – an open-source project used by Instagram as its JPEG format image decoder for images uploaded to the service.

In the attack scenario described in the study, an attacker can simply send an image to their target victim via email, WhatsApp, or another media exchange platform.

The target user saves the image on their handset, and when they open the Instagram app, the exploitation takes place, allowing the attacker full access to any resource in the phone that is pre-allowed by Instagram.

These resources include contacts, device storage, location services, and device camera.

In effect, the attacker gets full control over the app and can create actions on behalf of the user, including reading all of their personal messages in their Instagram account and deleting or posting photos at will, Check Point said.

Kangana takes a dig at Maha govt after Bhiwandi building collapse

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has taken a dig at the Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra by comparing the death toll at the Bhiwandi building collapse with the Pulwama terror attack.

On Thursday, Kangana reacted to a news piece about the building crash in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi town that killed 40 people.

Kangana tweeted from her verified account in Hindi addressing Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

“Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut when @myBMC was breaking my house in an unlawful manner, had you paid attention to this building at that time then at least these 50 people approximately would have been alive today. So many jawans have not been martyred in Pulwama by Pakistan as many innocent lives lost due to your negligence. God knows what will happen to Mumbai,” her tweet reads.

Earlier this month, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished parts of Kangana’s office in Bandra citing illegal construction. The demolition drive was stopped after a High Court stay order. Kangana subsequently tweeted photographs of her demolished office building, calling it a “rape” of her “dreams, confidence, self-respect and future”.

Team India fitness levels behind others, Kohli tell PM Modi

0

Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team, on Thursday admitted that while the fitness standards of the side have improved, they are still behind when compared with other teams in the world.

While interacting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Fit India Dialogue, Kohli spoke about the importance of fitness and proper diet to deal with the fast-paced nature of the world.

During the online session, PM Modi, among other things, inquired Kohli about the Yo-Yo test and whether the Indian skipper is also required to be part of the exercise.

“Sir, the test (Yo-yo) is very important considering the fitness point of view. When you’re looking at the global fitness levels and standards, our team’s level is still below that of the other teams. However, we are looking to take that higher, it’s a basic requirement,” Kohli said.

“T20Is and ODIs get over in a day. However, when you’re talking about a Test match, we have to play five days, play one full day, get back and return refreshed for the next day’s play. Considering this, the fitness benchmark is very important,” he added.

The Indian skipper further said he always takes the initiative and runs first for the test. “There is a condition, if I fail the test, I will also not be available for selection. I think this system and culture need to be set.

“Overall, the fitness level of the team is important. Our fast bowlers, who are the best in the world right now, are now able to give their full effort even on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th days. We always had the skill, but in crucial moments, our performances used to dip. The opposition team used to win.

“These days, due to our fitness, we are able to capitalize on the crucial moments of the game. The results are coming because of this. This benchmark is very important for elite sportsmen,” he added.

In a candid moment during their conversation, the prime minister also questioned the India captain whether Delhi’s Chhole Bhature business is suffering, considering Kohli – who has now turned into a vegan — has been staying away from his favorite street food.

In response, Kohli broke into laughter and said during his growing days, he was eating bad and trying out a lot of street food but the demands of the sport helped him understand the importance of staying fit.

“We were discussing a few minutes back, our native diet, the food from our region, I have noticed we have not had any health issues with it. From my own experience, I have seen my grandmother, she is very healthy. She eats simple home-cooked food. When I was growing up, I used to eat a lot of street food. Whenever I used to go play, I used to eat outside a lot. From a health point of view, I realized it wasn’t good,” the 31-year-old said

“Physical fitness and diet, focusing on these things brought about the changes in me. Just like our sport, our lives have also gotten faster and demanding. If we are not keeping up with it then we will be left behind,” he added.

Kohli is currently leading Royal Challengers Bangalore in the United Arab Emirates in their quest for their maiden title in the Indian Premier League.

Pappu Yadav launches party manifesto after filing an affidavit

The Jan Adhikar Party headed by Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav on Thursday claimed that voters will not allow Gujarati CM in Bihar any longer.

Playing the regional pride card, Yadav targeted the coalition government of the JDU and the BJP, alleging that the Gujarati leaders in the BJP are exerting a huge influence on CM Nitish Kumar.

“The people of Bihar do not want a Gujarati CM anymore. In the 2020 elections, a Bihari leader will emerge as the CM of the state,” Ranjan said.

The strong man of North Bihar also launched the party manifesto. Ranjan said he had submitted an affidavit before a first-class judicial magistrate in the Patna High Court before releasing the manifesto.

The affidavit was given on Wednesday in which it was mentioned that his party was ready to face legal action in case it failed to fulfill the promises made in the manifesto.

“As per the manifesto, every point shall be completed in a time-bound manner once my party forms the government in Bihar,” Yadav said.

Ranjan said that if his party did not turn Bihar into a corruption-free state within six months, he will tender his resignation and sent it to the governor’s office.

According to the manifesto, CCTV cameras will be installed in every shop as well as every home within one year to prevent crime. Any person found outraging the modesty of women will be punished within two weeks. There will be also a provision of deleting their names from the voters’ list.

Ranjan promised to develop Patna into Asia’s top city within three years. A film city will be set up in the name of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, land acquisition will be done as soon as any industrialist was ready for investment. The other points of the manifesto promise stopping the migration of people from Bihar within two years and permanently resolving the flood situation within three years.

“We have given the slogan of three years versus 30 years of RJD and NDA regime. This would be the first time in the history of the world that a political party has given an affidavit in High Court with a promise to fulfill the promises made in the manifesto in a time-bound manner,” He said.

“I have a list of 60 scams that happened during the NDA regime. All of these will be investigated,” added the four-time MP.

Govt plans InvIT model to monetise even regulated tariff assets of PGCIL

0

The government proposes to expand the asset monetization programme of transmission utility Power Grid Corporation by including even the Regulated Tariff Mechanism-based assets for sale under the InvlT model.

An InvIT is a pool of money collected from investors to run operational infrastructure projects in return for a regular yield to its unitholders.

Government sources said that the Core Group of Secretaries on Asset Monetization has asked Power Grid to test the market for both Regulated Tariff Mechanism & Tariff Based Competitive Bidding assets worth Rs 10,000 crore each in two phases.

The fresh directive is based on suggestions given by the NITI Aayog to bundle Regulated Tariff Mechanism (RTM) assets (which form 95% of PGCIL’s asset base) along with TBCB assets to improve the viability of the package up for monetization under the InvIT model.

Sources said that a concept note on asset monetization and approvals would be taken by October and the entire process would be completed by January 2021.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has already given its approval to the monetization of Power Grid Corporation of India’s TBCB assets held through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), through an Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT).

Now, even RTM assets may be bundled in the package to enhance the quantum of the asset monetization exercise.

The government is looking at asset monetization for Power Grid so that its proceeds could be utilized for fresh investment in the transmission network expansion and other capital schemes of the company.

Monetisation of the first block of eligible SPVs is expected to be completed in FY 2020-21. Based on the experience gained and depending upon the eligibility for monetization further monetization shall be carried out in the future, as per the directives and targets fixed by the Government of India.
