Proving the adages on ‘sentiments’ right and showering their love and devotion, YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s fans have come forward to build a temple for their favorite leader.

CM Jagan’s fans from West Godavari district have come forward with this to worship Jagan. After searching for the ideal place to build the temple, finally, they have identified the land in Rajampalem of Gopalapuram Mandal.

Local YCP leader Kurukuri Nageswara Rao said the temple works will begin soon after the Bhumi Pooja. The Bhumi Pooja is planned next month on the hands of Gopalapuram MLA Talari Venkatrao.

After constructing the temple, YS Jagan’s idol would be installed in it. Though YS Jagan is a devout Christian, the rituals would be performed as per Hindu customs.

Earlier, a similar temple was built for late YSR at Rajagopalapuram village in Visakhapatnam district. Local YSR Congress party leaders had built the temple and the temple was named Rajasekhara Reddy Alayam.

Usually, this precedent of building temples to favorite leaders and actors was started in Tamil Nadu. Temples were built for the likes of Jayalalithaa, Khushboo Sundar, Namitha, and Nayanthara.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept his cards close

0

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept his cards close to his chest over the possible signing of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho on Tuesday.

The Old Trafford giants are hoping to make the 20-year-old their marquee signing in the transfer window when the impact of the coronavirus pandemic means few other clubs can get anywhere near Dortmund’s lofty asking price.

It is understood that discussions are ongoing about a deal for the England winger. The Bundesliga club has reportedly set an August 10 deadline and wants more than 100 million pounds for the player.

But Solskjaer gave little away in his press conference ahead of the second leg of United’s Europa League last-16 tie against Austrian side LASK.

“This transfer window is a long one and every transfer takes its course,” said the Norwegian. “It is what it is.””At the moment, I’ve got no updates for you anyway so if there’s any news, we’ll update you.”

LASK will arrive at Old Trafford for Wednesday’s match 5-0 down from the first leg. Chris Smalling had hoped to be involved in the competition with Roma, but an extension to his season-long loan move has not been reached.

The defender said he was disappointed that he “can’t finish what we started this season” as the Serie A side prepared to face Sevilla, with Solskjaer ready to welcome the 30-year-old back to Old Trafford.

“I think Chris has shown over his career at Man United how valuable he is for Man United,” the manager said.”This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma, showing and proving how good a center-back he is.”

By contrast, Alexis Sanchez has got the green light from United to feature in the Europa League for Inter Milan. The forward has been a huge disappointment at Old Trafford and it has been reported that discussions over a permanent exit are ongoing.

2. Drink cranberry juice

Cranberry juice has been much in use as a remedy for UTIs and bladder infections. There is some evidence that drinking cranberry juice may lead to the prevention of UTIs in some people.

Many people do prefer the sweet flavor of cranberry juice to water, and therefore prefer to have more of it. However, cranberry juices are full of added sweeteners and therefore are not all that good. One can go in for a cranberry supplement or pure cranberry juice for healthy benefits.

3. Avoid alcohol and coffee

The kidneys are vital in filtering out harmful substances as well as toxins, and both alcohol as well as caffeine can indeed require extra work from one’s kidneys. US virologists claim to identify potential COVID-19 treatment

0

As the world scrambles to find a cure for the novel coronavirus, virologists in the US have reported a possible therapeutic treatment for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 infection.

Pathogenic coronaviruses are a major threat to global public health, as shown by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, or SARS-CoV; the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, known as MERS-CoV; and the newly emerged novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

The study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, revealed how small molecule protease inhibitors show potency against human coronaviruses.

These coronavirus 3C-like proteases, known as 3CLpro, are strong therapeutic targets because they play vital roles in coronavirus replication.

“Vaccine developments and treatments are the biggest targets in Covid-19 research, and treatment is really key,” said study researcher Kyeong-Ok Chang from the Kansas State University in the US.

“This paper describes protease inhibitors targeting coronavirus 3CLpro, which is a well-known therapeutic target,” Chang added.

The current study demonstrated that this series of optimized coronavirus 3CLpro inhibitors blocked replication of the human coronaviruses MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 in cultured cells and in a mouse model for MERS.

These findings suggest that this series of compounds should be investigated further as a potential therapeutic for human coronavirus infection.

The research team has been using the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants to develop antiviral drugs to treat MERS and human norovirus infections. Their work extends to other human viruses such as rhinoviruses and SARS-CoV-2.

“The work that this group of collaborators has been doing on antivirals and inhibitors for SARS and MERS for a number of years has been vital to their ability to quickly pivot to emphasize research on SARS-CoV-2 virus and therapeutics,” said Peter K. Dorhout from the Kansas State University.

“We would not have been able to come this far without important collaborations with our colleagues at other institutions. I think we are adding valuable information to the antiviral field,” the study authors wrote.

US should get large share of TikTok sale proceeds: Trump

0

US President Donald Trump has said that the country should get a large percentage of the proceeds if part of the short video-sharing platform TikTok’s business is bought by an American firm.

Trump said that he made the demand that a “substantial portion” of that price should come into the US Treasury during a conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella over the weekend.

Microsoft on Sunday confirmed that it wanted to proceed with talks to purchase the US business of TikTok.

The discussion between the Microsoft CEO and the US President led to setting a date for closure of the deal around September 15.

If such a deal does not materialize, TikTok will be out of business in the US by that time, Trump said.

“I said a very substantial portion of that price is going to have to come into the Treasury of the United States because we’re making it possible for this deal to happen,” Trump said in a meeting with US tech workers on Monday.

He even explained the rationale behind his demand.

“It’s a little bit like the landlord/tenant: Without a lease, the tenant has nothing. So they pay what’s called ‘key money,’ or they pay something,” Trump said.

“But the United States should be reimbursed or should be paid a substantial amount of money, because, without the United States, they don’t have anything — at least having to do with the 30 percent,” he said.

Trump said he does not mind if Microsoft, or any other “secure” American company, buys TikTok’s business in the US and he also shared the observation with the Microsoft CEO that it is “probably easier to buy the whole thing than to buy 30 percent of it.”

TikTok, owned by Chinese unicorn ByteDance, is facing scrutiny over its data-sharing practices.

The Trump administration has raised allegations that TikTok provided users data to the Chinese government.

Both Beijing and TikTok have denied the allegations.

Sachin Tendulkar supports cause to help slum dwellers

0

Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar recently came forward to support a cause dedicated to ensuring that essentials duly reached slum dwellers during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

The lockdown had left many poor families, especially those living in the slums, face hardships. Owing to restricted movements, sole-bread earners of families have not been able to move for work.

The Centre for the Study of Social Change (CSSC), an NGO located in Bandra East, left no stone unturned in ensuring that the 6,300 slum dwellers spread across 1,250 families in Bandra East were not left hungry and were given the required provisions on time.

An appeal to come forward and donate generously was made across various forums and amongst the donors was Tendulkar. The families were provided with boxes and each box contained rice, wheat flour, tur dal, sugar, tea powder, spices, salt, bathing, and washing soap.

The CSSC team, led by its President SY Bhojraj, ensured that the boxes were duly handed over to the legitimate beneficiaries only. CSSC identified deprived families of the H-East municipal ward through their health volunteers.

Bhojraj said: “The initiative was taken for families of daily wage earners, domestic helpers, hawkers, and other needy persons. They were and are out of jobs with no salaries and did not have provisions to tide over this stressful period.”

“We would like to thank all those who came forward, including Sachin Tendulkar, who donated generously to the deprived and needy families,” he added.

Earlier in May, Tendulkar had provided financial aid to 4,000 underprivileged people, including children from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In April, the former Indian batsman had pledged to help around 5,000 people for a month in Shivaji Nagar and the Govandi area of the city through an NGO named Apnalaya.

Before that, he had donated Rs 25 lakh each to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES Fund) and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Maharashtra) in his bid to join the fight against COVID-19.

Negative list of weapons to boost domestic defence sector

0

To expand the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem, a negative list of weapons and platforms would be notified with year-wise timelines for placing an embargo on the import of such items from those dates.

As per the draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP 2020) announced on Monday, this list would be updated periodically, without compromising on the operational requirements of the Services, to allow lead-time to industry to prepare itself for any such procurement which is likely to come up, subsequent to the indicated embargo date.

The policy proposes a Technology Assessment Cell (TAC) in coordination with the services, which would assess the industrial capability for design, development, and production including re-engineering for production of various major systems like armored vehicles, submarines, fighter aircraft, helicopters, radars with the major industries in the country.

A Project Management Unit (PMU), with representation from the Services, would be set up to support the acquisition process and facilitate the management of the contracts. This setup would bring in expertise to the process of acquisition as well as create focus and synergy in building military capabilities.

With self- reliance as the motto, the aim is to move away from licensed production to Design, Develop and produce wherein the Nation owns the Design Rights and IP of the systems.

“Our Armed forces have over the years acquired a range of platforms from diverse sources leading to a buildup of spares and consumables which has resulted in sub-optimal planning and resource allocation. Efforts would be made to adopt a family of weapons approach to standardize and optimize inventory and supply chain management,” the police said.

In addition, efforts would be made to provide the industry with greater visibility into the likely opportunities in the defense sector. Understanding future capital acquisition priorities will enable the industry to develop technologies, carry out necessary groundwork, and position themselves in an optimal manner to compete at the appropriate time.

In order to enhance procurement from domestic industry, it is incumbent that procurement is doubled from the current Rs 70,000 crore to Rs 1,40,000 crore by 2025.

In order to achieve this objective, it is proposed to carve out a distinct budget head for domestic capital procurement.

The policy will also strive for enhancing allocation for domestic capital procurement at the rate of a minimum of 15 percent per annum for the next five years.

Various studies have over the years brought out the need to enhance cost-effectiveness and improve efficiency in the use of MoD’s resources. Efforts would be made to scrutinize, evaluate, and optimize various items of expenditure in the Defence budget.

The policy says that investment promotion would be encouraged to provide a specific focus on certain identified segments and technological areas.

Investments in the aviation sector which help in co-development and strengthening defense ecosystems would be facilitated in association with the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Efforts would be made to address the identified gaps in those segments and offer incentives to global OEMs and the domestic industry to set up design and manufacturing facilities in India. The investments in these segments would also be channelized by offering high multipliers through offsets obligations.

The development of aero engines complex is a priority area. While significant improvements have been made, there are still critical gaps in the aero-engine segment for future development programs as well as for taking up the engine-related MRO activities of the current inventory of platforms.

The two Defence Corridors set up in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh would be specifically targeted by providing additional support as well as by offering higher multipliers for offset discharge for investments flowing into the Defence Corridors.

‘Shakuntala Devi’ producer: Theatrical releases will not become irrelevant

Producer Vikram Malhotra has just released his much-hyped new film, the Vidya Balan-starrer Shakuntala Devi, on OTT, but he takes a pragmatic approach and says skipping theatrical release is just a situational decision and by no means is the theatrical experience going to become irrelevant.

“The practice of consuming films and shows on digital platforms is not a new phenomenon. In the western world, it has been happening over the last 10 years. In India, too, a potential market has grown in the last five years. Yes, in the last three months, there have been films releasing directly on the OTT platforms for the obvious reason of the global pandemic. But I see no reason to looking at it as a shift from theatrical release to OTT,” Malhotra told IANS.

“It is not that theatrical releases will become irrelevant once normalcy returns. It is a temporary phase because content has to reach the audience,” he added.

Citing the example of “Shakuntala Devi”, he explained: “This film was slated to release in June. But we can see the unprecedented situation that the world is going through. During the lockdown, OTT is the widest platform of distribution of a film. As makers, we are utilizing that. If we make a film for a theatrical release, we have a very good reason to release it theatrically.”

“Shakuntala Devi” is directed by Anu Menon and it also features Jisshu Sengupta, Sanya Malhotra, and Amit Sadh. The film released on Amazon Prime Video on July 31.

The films released so far on OTT have all been small to medium-budget fare. Would digital release of a big-budget film guarantee as big a collection as the film in question might see at the theatrical box-office?

Malhotra replied: “I will explain how it works. There are different revenue models for the two platforms (theatre and OTT). The structures are different. When you release a film in the theatre, your fortune swings from zero to a hundred. A film goes from a deep loss to a great profit (financially) for a set of reasons. So the risk-reward ratio is very high. Earning profit for a film on the streaming platform after its release is different because the business model is different. So I refrain from the comparison.”

“In the future, when we take a call on what kind of risk and reward we are looking at from a film, we will map our audience. Based on whether a story is for individual viewing or collective viewing, we will decide whether to release the film on OTT or in the theatre,” explained the founder of Abundantia Entertainment.

A notification from the provincial government on Monday stated that the “threat of the coronavirus still exists and restrictions on social distancing and precautionary measures are required to be put in place for the safety of human lives”, reports Xinhua news agency.

The lockdown expired on July 31.

According to the notification, there will be a ban on gatherings of more than 10 people, sit-ins, and processions at public places during the ‘smart lockdown’ period.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) said that it has sacked 63 employees last month on various charges, including fake pilot licenses, false educational credentials, embezzlement, and dereliction of duty, it was reported on Monday.

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Khan said that the actions had been taken in accordance with the rules, The Express Tribune reported.

He confirmed that among the 63 laid-off employees, five were captains, who were sacked over charges of having fake licenses.

The PIA fired 28 employees over fake credentials, while 27 employees were sacked for being absent without notice.

Two employees over fired on charges of embezzlement and one employee were fired for incompetence, according to officials.

Besides, the airlines demoted four employees for refusing to work and held back increments to three employees for violating the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The spokesperson said rules of procedure were followed in the process of punishment, which would continue in PIA without any pressure.

Last month, the PIA had sacked 17 pilots for having ‘dubious’ flying licenses on the order of the federal cabinet. They included 12 captains and five first officers.

The sacking followed startling revelations by Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan, The Express Tribune reported.

In June, Khan had told Parliament that 262 pilots, out of total 860 in the country, had “suspicious flying licenses” and would be grounded immediately.

Later, PIA announced that it would ground a third of its 434 pilots.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony has confirmed that its existing PS4 controller will not work with PS5 games.

“We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller,” the company said in a statement.

A PS5 owner will need to buy additional controllers to play PS5 games, much like how PS3 controllers didn’t work on the PS4.

Meanwhile, any PlayStation officially licensed third-party controllers will work with PS4 games on the PS5.

Sony has not listed the supported games, but the company does confirm that officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.

In addition, the company also confirmed that PlayStation Camera will work with PS5 for playing supported PS VR games.

It will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that will be provided at no additional cost to PS VR users.

The company said that more details on how to get the adaptor will be announced at a later date.

Sony has so far unveiled a logo for the console, the PS5 gamepad, and a tech demo showing the console’s graphics capability.

The PS5 will feature a custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.5GHz and a custom GPU based on AMD’s rDNA 2 architecture hardware that promises 10.28 teraflops and 36 compute units clocked at 2.23GHz.

It will also have 16GB of GDDR6 RAM and a custom 825GB SSD.

The PS5 will also feature 4K Blu-ray drive and will still support discs, but those games will still require installation to the internal SSD.

Karnataka’s 85-year-old pond digger recovers from Covid

Karnataka’s octogenarian farmer Kamegowda, whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised in his ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio program for digging 16 ponds around his village to conserve water in Karnataka’s Mandya district, recovered from COVID after 14 days of treatment at a state-run hospital here.

“Kamegowda, 85, is relieved to be out of the hospital and happy to be back home at his village (Dasandoddi). The district administration gave him a royal farewell with a music band after he was discharged on Monday evening,” his associate K. Shivappa from nearby Malavalli town told IANS on phone.

Mandya is about 100 km southwest of Bengaluru in the southern state on way to Mysuru.

Though Kamegowda was reluctant to get admitted to the district hospital after he tested COVID positive at home on July 21, as he is against Allopathic medicines and his right leg was injured, he relented when an ambulance was rushed to ferry him to Mandya from his village.

“Kamegowda had to be cajoled and convinced that his family members too will get infected if he stayed at home and hence should shift to the hospital for treatment on July 22,” Shivappa recalled.

With his ecological feat drawing Modi’s attention and the media carrying his achievement across the country, Kamegowda received special care and a paramedic was deputed to look after him, as he was unable to walk to the toilet or eat properly as he can’t digest solid food in old age.

“Doctors, his son Krishna and nurses made him take gruel (Ganji) and fruits to restore his health. He responded well to the COVID treatment to recover from the infection in two weeks,” Shivappa pointed out.

When Kamegowda reached home, the village folk cheered and honored him for staging a remarkable recovery at his age from the dreaded disease.

Mandya Deputy Commissioner M.V. Venkatesh joined the hospital staff, including district health officer H.P. Manchegowda, hospital superintendent G. Sivakumar, and Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences Principal K.M. Shivakumar in sending off Kamegowda to home after discharge.

“It is a joy to see Kamegowda being discharged from the hospital on recovering completely from coronavirus. Special thanks to the hospital staff,” said Venkatesh on the occasion.

In his monthly radio program “Mann ki Baat” on June 28, Modi said with the onset of the southwest monsoon in many parts of the country, the people should practice rain-water harvesting to protect the environment, as Kamegowda was doing in Karnataka even though he was over 80 years old.

“Kamegowda has dug 16 ponds through his hard work. He is a simple farmer, but his personality is extraordinary. The work done by him sets him apart from others. At his age, Kamegowda takes cattle for grazing and has dug ponds in his village. When asked about his feat, he said as there was water shortage in his area, he was digging more ponds to conserve water for the people,” said Modi in his nationwide address.

Though ponds dug by Kamegowda may not be big, his efforts were huge, Modi had said.

“Kamegowda is an inspiration for the people in the country, as he has been forming water bodies over 4 decades, which have turned the Kundinibetta hillock green and provided water for drinking and farming,” an official said then.

The state government honored Kamegowda with the Rajyotsava award in 2019 in recognition of his yeomen community service.
