Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers inducted into RCB’s hall of fame

0

Mumbai, May 17 West Indies great Chris Gayle and South African legend AB de Villiers have been inducted into the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Hall of Fame, with former franchise skipper Virat Kohli saying that it was a truly special occasion for him to be announcing their names.

Following a long association with RCB (2011-2017), Gayle moved to Punjab Kings in 2018, playing for them till 2021. But the charismatic West Indian batter decided to stay away from the mega auction ahead of the 2022 season, though he has declared his intention to play for either RCB or PBKS in the next season.

De Villiers quit all forms of cricket completely last year, with IPL 2021 being his last season for RCB. His association with the Bengaluru franchise dates back to 2011 when he came into the side after spending a few seasons with Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals).

The ceremony, attended by Gayle and de Villiers virtually, saw a video montage take people back in time when the two players were at their menacing best.

“AB (de Villiers) has truly changed the game of cricket with his innovation, brilliance, and sportsmanship which truly defines the RCB Play Bold philosophy,” said Kohli on Monday night.

“It’s truly special for me to be doing this for both of you. We saw videos of how you have changed the way the IPL has been played over the years. Two people who have had a huge impact in IPL being where it is today; and RCB being where it is today,” added Kohli.

D Villiers, who also joined the induction virtually, shared a heartfelt message with the RCB camp.

“To the RCB boys sitting there, what an amazing privilege. Quite emotional to be honest,” he said. “Virat, thanks for the kind words. Mike (Hesson, director of cricket operations), Nikhil, and everyone from the franchise who set this up, it’s a really special touch. We had some amazing times together as a team, and the sun has moved on for Chris (Gayle) and I now, but we’re still very much part of the family and will always be. So yes, thank you very much for the very special touch.

“(Captain) Faf (du Plessis) and the guys sitting there, Virat and the guys that know me really well for many years know how special stuff like this is to me. You guys know how much of an amazing journey I had during the IPL, especially with my RCB family, and how it changed my life. So, huge privilege to be part of this. I don’t have enough words to thank you for this touch,” he added passing the stage on to Gayle.

“I want to thank the RCB family for the opportunity, for everything,” said Gayle. “It’s been really special to me as well. And to be inducted is something fantastic, and I will always keep RCB close to my heart. I share a lot of memories with some special players, and some special coaches as well. It’s been really, really fantastic. I wish I was there to give this speech and look into you guys’ eyes and tell you exactly how I feel. AB mentioned it’s gonna be emotional as well because it’s very touching for such a franchise that has been created over the years, it’s really, really fantastic.

“And to Virat, thank you for the kind words as well, fantastic sharing the dressing room with you guys as well,” he concluded.

RCB will take on Gujarat Titans in their last league game of IPL 2022 on May 19 at the Wankhede, with the Bengaluru franchise facing an uphill task to qualify for the playoffs.

Anderson declares himself fit for England selection; Saqib injury brightens veteran seamer’s chance

0

London, May 17 England’s bowling stalwart James Anderson has declared himself fit for selection as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) looks set to announce the squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand, beginning at Lord’s on June 2.

Anderson, 39, was curiously dropped from the side that toured the Caribbean for a three-Test series despite some fine performances during the forgettable Ashes campaign over the winter.

But with England getting a new chief coach in New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum and charismatic all-rounder Ben Stokes as captain, Anderson is in contention to earn a recall to the Test setup for next month’s series against the Black Caps.

No seamer in the history of cricket has more Test wickets than Anderson, but the experienced right-arm is taking nothing for granted ahead of the squad announcement.

“I don’t want to be counting my chickens, I want to make sure I am bowling well, taking wickets, and in good form if and when that call comes,” ICC quoted Anderson as saying to Sky Sports. “For most of the year, I have been thinking about trying to start the season well for Lancashire and preparing for that.

“I feel in good shape, in good form, so I am happy with the way things are going and I will be absolutely delighted if I do get back into the team.”

Anderson’s return could turn around the fortunes of the side, which currently sits at the bottom of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings with just one Test victory in the last 12 months.

Anderson has given some decent performances in the three-county matches he has played for Lancashire over the past month, with the seamer picking up 11 wickets at an average of 19.54.

Musk hints paying less for Twitter as he fights with Agrawal over bots

0

San Francisco, May 17 Tesla CEO Elon Musk has hinted to pay less for a Twitter takeover, as he sparred with CEO Parag Agrawal over the actual number of bots or spammy accounts on the platform.

At a conference in Miami, Musk said that Twitter could have at least four times more fake accounts than what has been revealed in its filing

“You can’t pay the same price for something that is much worse than they claimed,” he said during the event late on Monday.

“Currently what I’m being told is that there’s just no way to know the number of bots. It’s like, as unknowable as the human soul,” he added.

Musk, who has put the $44 billion takeover deal on hold, believes bots make at least 20 percent of Twitter users, and a lower price may not be “out of the question”.

Twitter shares were down 8 percent to close at $37.39 on Monday.

Musk attacked Agrawal after the Twitter CEO on Monday went into finer details on how the micro-blogging platform is fighting spam and fake accounts.

The Tesla CEO even showed an emoji depicting a “pile of poo” to Agrawal on his Twitter thread.

“Our actual internal estimates for the last four quarters were all well under 5 percent — based on the methodology outlined above. The error margins on our estimates give us confidence in our public statements each quarter,” said Agrawal.

“Unfortunately, we don’t believe that this specific estimation can be performed externally, given the critical need to use both public and private information (which we can’t share). Externally, it’s not even possible to know which accounts are counted as mDAUs on any given day,” said Agrawal.

Musk then replied on his Twitter thread: “So how do advertisers know what they’re getting for their money? This is fundamental to the financial health of Twitter.”

At the summit, Musk said: “They claim that they’ve got this complex methodology that only they can understand… It can’t be some deep mystery that is, like, more complex than the human soul or something like that.”

Why Donald Trump can’t join back Twitter despite Musk’s efforts

0

San Francisco, May 17 While Elon Musk tries his best to bring Donald Trump back on Twitter, it is not easy for the former US President to join back the micro-blogging platform owing to the rules on his own social media platform called ‘Truth Social’.

According to a new filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), when Trump posts anything on ‘Truth Social’, he cannot repost it to any other social network for six hours.

These restrictions are likely intended to drive traffic to ‘Truth Social’, reports TechCrunch.

The filing said that Trump “may make a post from a personal account related to political messaging, political fundraising or get-out-the-vote efforts on any social media site at any time.

But he is “generally obligated” to use ‘Truth Social’.

Trump will own 46.8 percent of the company’s voting power and 73.3 million shares of the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) once it merges with ‘Digital World Acquisition Corp’.

Trump was banned from Twitter in January last year for inciting violence at the US Capitol Hill.

At the time, he had nearly 89 million followers on the platform.

On ‘Truth Social’, he currently has close to 3 million followers.

Musk last week reiterated that Parag Agrawal-led Twitter should restore its account of Trump.

“Even though I think a less divisive candidate would be better in 2024, I still think Trump should be restored to Twitter,” the Tesla CEO said.

Musk had earlier said that he would reverse the Twitter ban on Trump once he takes over the micro-blogging platform.

He has currently put the $44 billion deal on hold as he fights with Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal over the presence of fake accounts.

Trump, however, decided not to join the micro-blogging site, saying “Twitter has become very boring”.

Harshal Patel one of the best death-over bowlers in the country: Tendulkar

0

Mumbai, May 17 Harshal Patel disguising his variations beautifully is the reason why the 31-year-old Royal Challengers Bangalore pace bowler has been performing so well in the last couple of Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons, according to India’s cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Patel bagged the Purple Cap in IPL 2021 taking 32 wickets in 15 games, with his best figures being 5/27 for the then Virat Kohli-led side. Ahead of the new season, he was bought back by the Bengaluru franchise for a whopping Rs 10.75 crore in the mega auction. And, the right-arm medium pacer hasn’t disappointed his side, taking 18 wickets in 12 games.

Overall in his IPL career, dating back to 2012, Patel has taken 96 wickets and would be eyeing a century of IPL wickets this season.

RCB are currently on 14 points from 13 games and has a chance of making the last four if they win their last league game against Gujarat Titans by a huge margin. And, they would be banking on Patel to do the needful.

Tendulkar believes that Patel can be an absolute gem to Indian cricket.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, the legend labeled Patel as one of the most potent bowlers in the death overs.

“Punjab was able to put on 209 on the board and that is only because of Harshal Patel. His bowling has improved with every match as he is able to disguise his variation beautifully. Well bowled, Harshal and I think that he is one of the leading bowlers in the country when it comes to bowling in the death overs,” said the cricketing great.

The way Punjab Kings were going in that game at the Brabourne Stadium on May 13 with Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone smashing Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood and Mohammed Siraj at will, it was Patel who brought sanity to the game, restricting the opposition to 209 when 240-250 looked a possibility.

Patel returned figures of 4-0-34-4, bowling at an economy rate of 8.50, where Hazlewood conceded 64 in his four overs and Siraj went for 36 in his two overs.

Harshal will have to play a key role as RCB take on Gujarat Titans in the team’s final game of the group stages.

Moeen reveals the struggles in his cricket journey, says it gives him goosebumps even today

0

Mumbai, May 17 Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Moeen Ali has revealed the struggles he had to go through in his cricketing journey, saying that the mere thought of the tough road he traversed gives him “goosebumps” today.

Following an extremely successful IPL 2021 season with CSK, where he played a key role in the Chennai franchise clinching its fourth title in the UAE, the England player, who quit Test cricket to prolong his white-ball career, has had a patchy IPL 2022.

As the IPL 2022 season ended prematurely for the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side, Moeen reflected on the struggles he faced in his formative years and how determination and passion for the sport helped him overcome the hurdles.

He revealed that his family didn’t even have one Pound on some days to make ends meet, forcing them to survive on sandwiches or cucumber.

“My dad had a huge passion for the game… him and as well as the twin brothers. Between the families, there were five of us, so my cousins played, I played my younger brother played. I just remember I was eight years old (when) I started playing with my brothers in the park, and I could feel that they were also getting better. So, then I took a trial when I was 19, and it was the first time that I ever played with a hardball and stuff,” the 34-year-old all-rounder said on CSK TV.

“That was the start and I was soon playing county cricket at a young age, doing well and loving the game. It was football, cricket, football, cricket. Cricket was my dad’s passion and we just carried on,” added Moeen.

Moeen said that his father had to juggle between his work as a psychiatric nurse and taking the children for county games, adding that sometimes he could not afford petrol, and occasionally food.

“At first, we were not very well off… we did not have a lot of money. My dad worked as a psychiatric nurse, which means you have to see people struggle mentally and stuff in the hospital. But at the same time, he had to take me and my brothers for county games, trials, and training. He could not afford petrol; he could not afford sometimes, food. It was very difficult. Sometimes all three of us had a game the same day, a county game which was really unfortunate. We had one car, a terrible car between two families and so once the petrol and everything is done, we had just one pound left for the whole day. We had to get bread, sometimes cucumber, and a sandwich.

“That is the struggle… and it wasn’t just my dad and uncle. It was my mum and aunt, them getting the clothes ready, making sure everything was on time. It was always a rush. Very, very difficult times, but the best times,” added Moeen.

“That was one of the many, many stories where financially we really struggled. My uncle and dad turned up selling chickens just to provide for the next game. I didn’t even have my own pads at one point in time… I had to use my dad’s friend’s son’s pads for trials. So, very difficult but amazing days. I became professional very early and things got better and better.”

On the cricket field, Moeen rose quickly, first starting as a seam-bowling all-rounder before taking to off-spin on the insistence of a coach. Back issues while bowling seam played a part in the decision.

“For me it was just the normal thing to play every day. I didn’t know what it was to be a professional. I just thought this is life, I am playing every day, and my dad said, from 13 to 15, give me two years of your life. After school, we train, and we go outside in the park. Do whatever it takes. And after that, you do whatever you want. And that was the mindset that got me training every day.

“Our area where we were living, it was a very rough area, fighting and all. But I just wanted to play cricket. We were adamant we were going to make it and that is something that came from my dad, just try better than everybody. Not in an arrogant way, but just work harder than everybody else. Just thinking about it now makes me get goosebumps because you think where you come from and it is a great reminder for me about my own humble background,” added Moeen.

Vijay Deverakonda, Samantha slammed by Pawan Kalyan fans for ‘Kushi’ movie title

0

Hyderabad, May 16 The makers of Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha’s next movie officially announced the title of the love story as ‘Kushi’ on Monday.

But Telugu folk, particularly Pawan Kalyan’s fans, have had mixed reactions to the title.

Because SJ Surah’s directorial ‘Kushi’ (2001), starring Bhumika Chawla as the female lead, is an irreplaceable classic in Pawan’s career and is beloved by his fans, the adaptation of the same title has sparked a backlash.

Getting a hold of a classic title amid huge expectations has been an even bigger problem, as the first look poster has received mixed reviews as well. Vijay’s outfits reveal an odd sense of style, irking Pawan’s fans and other general audiences as well.

Pawan’s fans have been discussing the same on social media as they express their dissatisfaction over Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘Kushi’ title.

Being directed by ‘Ninnu Kori’, ‘Majili’ fame Siva Nirvana, Vijay Deverakonda, and Samantha’s ‘Kushi’ is set in Kashmir and features the Army as the main setting. Mythri Movie Makers is financing the film.

Sonu Sood on hosting ‘Roadies 18’: As a host, my responsibility is to keep the soul of ‘Roadies’ alive

0

New Delhi, May 16  Bollywood actor Sonu Sood says it was not easy for him initially to step into the shoes of host Rannvijay Singh on the reality show MTV ‘Roadies Journey to South Africa’.

According to him, it was not an easy task to make proper communication with the contestants and develop a bond with them but later he did it perfectly.

Sonu says: “When I was approached for the show, there were many things in my mind. Whether I will be able to carry on the legacy of this show and I will be able to speak to the contestants. I thought it was not my cup of tea.”

“Then I thought about the concept of this show. As a host, my responsibility is to keep the soul of ‘Roadies’, repackage it and make it a very positive and inspiring journey. After shooting for 40-45 days in South Africa I realized that I connected with the ex as well as new roadies and it was like a family reunion.”

The actor further shares that he is very happy with the response he is getting from his fans post he joined the show as a host.

“I’ve been getting so many calls and so many messages. In fact, when I travel, I meet so many people who say that they are watching Roadies together as a family – mother, father, sister and this is the first time that they are experiencing this. It’s very positive and inspiring.”

“It doesn’t matter if people from a particular state try for Roadies but now viewers will see the real roadies coming in when they watch the show,” he adds.

Ask him about his overall experience and how he finds the roadies on the show, he replies: “I am really able to connect with all the Roadies. Spending so much time together. You have seen them grow and change, away from families with no money and isolated places intents and different locations and in tough conditions also so I think that brings the real roadie.”

“I’m really happy to see them getting the feel of real life. In fact, they also confess that they are different individuals. By the time the whole thing ended they had different temperaments.”

“They were aggressive. Sometimes they would fight but when our whole journey came together they felt they have grown as individuals and human beings. I think that was the real win for us,” he says.

On the question of what viewers can expect in the coming episode, he says: “Lots of fun tasks, lots of beautiful locations, bonding like never before. And of course, the judge, the host, and the Roadies will all be in the same space.”

“The whole journey was like that we all learned together a lot and kind of stunts, the kind of tasks that we did really inspired a lot of people to try next time. And of course, people who have seen that, they would say we need to experience it once for sure in our lifetime.”

While sharing a few BTS moments, he reveals: “All the tasks are at different locations whether it’s Bungee Jumping, Skydiving or anything, every place was different geographically, the temperature to the whole look of the episode.”

“So, yes, Roadies are pretty excited and nervous to do Bungee Jumping and Skydiving. Roadies are all about overcoming your fears you believe you can do something that was destined to happen and you just overcome your fear. Then you take that plunge.”

As a host, Sonu has to be neutral towards all the contestants and observe their games, he feels that each contestant is giving their best and it is difficult to mention anyone.

“I can’t point out one roadie, every roadie has its own quality. They have their own style, their own temperament. I feel every single roadie on the episode was something who people will look up to.”

Sonu goes on: “In one episode you feel Soundous Moufakir or Kevin Almasifar is good, in the next time Baseer Ali or Kavya Khurana will perform better, in the next someone else will perform better.”

“So, they always used to surprise the way they used to handle the situation and they kept on changing because that’s the way they program and nourish themselves. The show reveals new heroes every week.”

Recently there was a Roadies Roast that was mostly around the show. Comic artists that were part of it include Urjita Wani, Andy Reghu, Punit Pania, Sejal Bhat, and Haseeb Khan. It was hosted by Karunesh Talwar.

Sonu says: “So, the whole roast is totally improvised. I actually never realized what roast is all about. We used to do it in college with friends. So when I shot today, this was something people weren’t expecting. It came quite naturally to me.”

Mumbai, May 16 The makers of Akshay Kumar’s upcoming historical ‘Prithviraj’, which is based on the life and valour of Prithviraj Chauhan, had to create over 50,000 costumes and also used 500 different types of turbans during the shoot.

Akshay Kumar says, “Rarely do films take this much effort and embark upon such monumental tasks. Every element of our film which is based on the life of Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan has been dealt with utmost sincerity, authenticity, and reverence.

“We have paid attention to the minutest details while making the film because we wanted this to be the most glorious retelling of Samrat Prithviraj’s life on the big screen,” he said.

The film’s director Chandraprakash Dwivedi says, “Detailing was key to making a film like ‘Prithviraj’. For example, 500 different turbans were created for the film. All these were authentic replication of the kinds of turbans worn by kings, masses, and people of various professions at that time.

“We had an expert on turban styling on the set who would oversee the process of these turbans being worn by our actors,” he said.

He adds, “Over 50,000 costumes were handmade for the film by a costume designer who, along with his team, was specially flown in from Rajasthan to stay in Mumbai and make these costumes from scratch.

He feels glad that he had a producer like Aditya Chopra who believed in his vision for the film and backed him completely to tell a story like this in the grandest way possible.
