‘Shivling’ found in Gyanvapi well, claim Hindu lawyers

0

Varanasi, May 16 As the videography survey of the Gyanvapi Masjid complex was completed on Monday, the Hindu side advocates claimed that a ‘shivling’ had been found inside the well.

Lawyer Vishnu Jain said he would go to the civil court to seek its protection.

An advocate from the Hindu side, Madan Mohan Yadav, claimed that the shivling is Nandi faced.

“The shivling is 12 feet by 8 inches in diameter,” he added.

Heavy security was deployed as the court-appointed committee reached the spot to conduct the survey on Monday. Nearly 65 percent of the exercise was completed on Sunday.

The advocate commissioners will submit their reports to the court on Tuesday.

On Sunday, the survey of the areas of the mosque which, according to lawyers Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Jain, used to be a part of the temple was done.

On the western wall of the Gyanvapi complex, the remains of the Hindu temple demolition are visible and the pictures which are the biggest proof will be surveyed. For this, the fourth lock was opened on Monday, while the first three rooms were opened during the survey on Saturday.

Gyanvapi Mosque, adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, is currently facing a legal battle. A court in Varanasi has directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to probe the structure of the Gyanvapi Masjid.

The survey is to find out the truth behind the claims of the presence of Hindu symbols of worship in the mosque complex.

Five Delhi-based women — Rakhi Singh, Laxmi Devi, Sita Sahu, and others moved the court with their plea on April 18, 2021, seeking permission for daily prayers before the idols of Hindu deities on its outer walls. They also sought to stop the opponents from causing any damage to the idols.

Modi offers prayers in Lumbini's Maya Devi Temple (Ld)

This is Modi’s fifth visit to Nepal after becoming Prime Minister in 2015, but the first since he was re-elected in 2019.

After his visit to the Maya Devi Temple, Modi will light a butter lamp in front of the Ashoka Pillar, and water the Bodhi Vriksha – the tree under which Gautam Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, according to his itinerary.

Later, he will perform a ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ and lay the foundation stone of the India International Centre for Buddhist Culture and Heritage, being built at the initiative of the International Buddhist Confederation, New Delhi.

A bilateral meeting between the two Prime Ministers is also scheduled which will undertake a comprehensive review of recent agreements.

Deuba will host a lunch in the honour of Modi and his delegation.

Swastika Investmart sees ‘flat’ listing for LIC, recommends investors to go long

0

New Delhi, May 16 Brokerage house Swastika Investmart anticipates that LIC is likely to have a “flat” listing.

The brokerage’s rationale behind the anticipation is based on the current market situation such as increased inflation statistics, FII outflows, currency weakness, and geopolitical and rate hike-related worries.

The much-awaited listing of the insurance major is expected to take place on Tuesday.

Presently, markets are experiencing extraordinary volatility, which has caused sell-offs in equity markets all over the world.

According to recent grey market patterns, the LIC’s unlisted shares were selling at Rs 936 per share on Saturday, a discount of Rs 13 to the IPO price band’s upper range, the brokerage said.

However, the stock’s modest float may limit the stock’s post-listing decline.

“LIC is synonymous with insurance in India and enjoys a huge competitive advantage in terms of brand value and a huge network of agents. However, there are concerns with the company like losing market share to private players, lower profitability & revenue growth compared to private players, lower VNB margins, and short-term persistency ratios, but the valuation at Price to Embedded Value of 1.1 had discounted the above concerns.”

Nevertheless, investors must be aware that the business of insurance is long-term in nature and therefore it recommends investors to stay with the company for the long term even if the company lists at a discount.

Mumbai, May 16 Delhi Capitals are treating their penultimate league game of the Indian Premier League against Punjab Kings later on Monday as a do-or-die clash, with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav saying that the team still has their playoff hopes alive provided they don’t repeat the mistakes they have “committed in the competition so far”.

The spinner said that starting on a firm footing, either with the bat or ball, would be crucial.

“We have prepared well for our match. We are considering the game as a knockout match for us. It will be important for us to get off to a good start, whether we bat or bowl first. It’ll also be crucial for us to assess the conditions well.”

The wrist-spinner also praised the Punjab team, saying there are no weak teams in the tournament.

“Punjab Kings are a good side. There are a lot of good players on the team. They batted very well in their last match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. There’s no weak team in T20s. Anybody can put up a big score or take wickets on any given day.”

13-yr-old arrested for toddler’s murder in Lucknow

0

Lucknow, May 16 A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for killing a toddler in Lucknow after he confessed to his crime.

On Sunday, the boy confessed that four days ago, he was allegedly slapped by the victim’s father who used to also abuse his family members, humiliating them in full public view.

Syed Ali Abbas, ACP, Aliganj, said that the revelation came two days after the naked body of the victim was recovered from a water tank of a school in the Sairpur police station area.

The boy was sent to the Para Shelter home and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Monday.

The ACP said that the minor boy confessed to his crime during interrogation before his parents.

“I found the girl child outside her house, I picked her up and brought her to my school and threw her body in the water tank. I also tied a brick to both her legs and threw away her clothes,” he reportedly told the police.

The crime of a minor was exposed after he was taken to the spot in presence of FSL members and the police team on Saturday.

The minor efficiently climbed the wall of the school to reach the tank with ease, and also traced the girl’s frock, and the string he used to tie her body with.

To verify and rule out the possibility of the involvement of any other culprit in the case police also conducted a thorough investigation and questioned neighbors but did not get any evidence, the police said.

The minor was booked under the charges of murder, kidnapping, and causing disappearance of evidence, the ACP said.

Police said a child psychiatrist will be called in to testify to the mental status of the boy and ascertain whether he faced any trauma.

The presence of quality spinners helping us climb up the points table says RR’s Samson

0

Mumbai, May 16 Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson has maintained that in a high-pressure tournament such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), it is not always easy to maintain a “chilled and nice” atmosphere inside the dressing room, adding that the presence of quality spinners in the side was helping the team’s campaign in IPL 2022.

Former champions Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 24 runs at the Brabourne Stadium on Sunday night to climb to the second position with 16 points, and the team now has to ensure they don’t lose too badly in their last league assignment in order to secure a playoffs berth.

Speaking about the emphatic win, built around Yashasvi Jaiswal’s quick-fire 41, and his and Devdutt Padikkal’s fine middle-order showing, the skipper said, “This win was satisfying. The atmosphere is chilled and nice, it’s not easy to maintain it when there are losses and we have done it well. Batting first suits our approach well, we want to bat positively and the bowling unit is good as well.”

The skipper also had positive words for the fielding intensity, saying that James Neesham was the live-wire of the side when the Super Giants were chasing.

“The intensity in the field was good. Special mention to (James) Neesham who brought a lot of energy.”

Samson justified using Ashwin in different phases, saying that it is one of the advantages of having quality spinners on the side.

“The bonus of having quality spinners is you can use them anywhere,” said Samson.

Lucknow Super Giants batter Ayush Badoni said the loss had not done too much damage to the team’s chances of securing a playoff berth.

“Our stats team says both RR and LSG just have to make sure they don’t lose too badly, thanks to RCB’s poor NRR (net run rate). RCB will have to win by around 80 and RR lose by around 80, for RCB to go above RR, but RR play after RCB. So, they have an advantage,” opined Badoni, who was out for a first-ball duck on Sunday.

Ex-Andhra minister’s daughters and son-in-law get anticipatory bail

0

Amaravati, May 16 The Andhra Pradesh High Court has granted anticipatory bail to two daughters and son-in-law of former minister P. Narayana and others in the Class 10 question paper leak case.

Narayana’s daughter P. Sharani, P. Sindhura, son-in-law K. Punith and 10 others of the Narayana group of educational institutions got anticipatory bail.

On a house motion petition filed by them, Justice K. Manmadha Rao passed the interim orders, directing the government not to take any hasty action against them. The court adjourned the hearing to May 18.

Narayana, a leader of the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and founder of Narayana Group of institutions, was last week arrested in the case.

A team of Chittoor police had taken him into custody in Hyderabad on May 10. He was produced before a magistrate in Chittoor in the wee hours of May 11. However, the magistrate granted bail to Narayana after agreeing with the contention of his counsel that he resigned from the post of the chairman of Narayana Group in 2014.

Narayana and seven others were arrested in a case registered in Chittoor town connected with the leakage of a question paper for SSC exams on April 27. The police had booked a case after the Telugu question paper was leaked from an examination center and circulated in a WhatsApp group.

The case was registered on a complaint by the District Educational Officer (DEO) about the circulation of a Telugu language question paper on April 27.

In the wake of Narayana’s arrest, his daughters, son-in-law, and others associated with the Narayana group moved to the high court, seeking anticipatory bail.

The opposition TDP has condemned Narayana’s arrest and termed it a political vendetta by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government. Still, the latter defended its action and alleged that the group was involved in several irregularities.

‘Forget Bollywood, even Hollywood can’t afford Rajnikanth!’

0

TV actress Jayashree Venketaramanan has come out in support of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu on his comments about working in Bollywood.

She says: “Mahesh Babu has been one among my favourite.I know and understand the kind of craze people have for Mahesh Babu. In fact most of us are also aware of the fact that people worship Rajnikanth sir. I have personally seen people have Rajnikanth’s photo kept next to their Gods at home, now you tell who would want to leave such a place, can money buy any of this! So in that sense, honestly forget Mahesh Babu, Bollywood, in fact even Hollywood can’t afford Rajnikanth.”

Recently in a interview when Mahesh Babu answered that Bollywood can’t afford him sparked a controversy. Jayashree feels he is a humble human being.

She adds: “Well if you ask me, I’d like to say that I have seen Mahesh Babu’s interviews in the past too and have never felt that he was arrogant in any way. Even in the latest interview, he started, by saying that ‘this might sound arrogant but I dont think Bollywood can afford me,’ I think what he meant was that the kind of stardom and love he gets there, is incomparable and something that can’t be measured by money, and over the years if you are revered in such a way who would want to go someplace else and start afresh. He is a humble human being.”

Jayashree rose to the fame after essaying the protagonist in popular television show, ‘Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha’ and has also acted in shows like ‘Beend Banoongaa Ghodi Chadhunga’ and ‘Zindagi Khatti Meethi’.

Smartphone use can hamper mental well-being in young adults

0

If you are a young adult and spend a lot of time on your smartphone that it may cause a rapid decline in your mental health, says new research.

According to a report by Sapien Labs, the growth of smartphone use and an increase in social isolation point to a decline in the mental health of young adults aged 18-24.

“Data shows that people now spend 7-10 hours online,” Tara Thiagarajan, Chief Scientist at Sapien Labs, said in a statement.

“This leaves little time for in-person social engagement. Prior to the Internet, by the time someone turned 18, we estimate that they would likely have spent anywhere from 15,000 to 25,000 hours interacting with peers and family in person.”

And now, Thiagarajan said, the research showed the internet age has likely cut that range down to 1,500 to 5,000 hours.

She mentioned that social interaction teaches people how to read facial expressions, body language, physical touch, appropriate emotional responses, and conflict resolution, life skills that are crucial for socio-emotional development. Without these skills, people can feel detached from society and possibly harbour suicidal thoughts.

The report also revealed that over the pandemic, the mental well-being of each younger age group of adults fell much more dramatically.

Across 34 countries where data was acquired, the decline, particularly for young adults (ages 18-24), exacerbates a trend that existed prior to the pandemic but began after 2010, alongside the growth of smartphone use.

Prior to 2010, studies showed that young adults had the highest levels of psychological well-being, but since then, the trend has been in the opposite direction.

The study outlined the key symptoms that impact the majority of young adults 18-24 or are most significantly amplified or deteriorated compared to older adults.

These include obsessive, strange or unwanted thoughts, self-image, self-worth and confidence, feelings of being detached from reality, relationships with others, suicidal thoughts, fear and anxiety, and feelings of sadness, distress or hopelessness.

Peace shall only prevail when people’s rights, dignity protected: CJI

0

Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana on Saturday said peace shall only prevail when people’s dignity and rights are recognised and protected.

The CJI, who made the remarks after laying the foundation stone of a new high court building complex in Srinagar, emphasized that mere laws were not enough to build tradition, it requires men of high ideals to infuse life in the skeleton of law.

“Denial of justice would ultimately lead to anarchy. Soon the institution of judiciary would be destabilized as people will look for extrajudicial mechanisms. Peace shall only prevail, when people’s dignity and rights are recognised and protected.”

In the speech, he quoted poet Ali Jawad Zaidi to reflect his sentiments and famous Urdu poet Rifat Sarfarosh.

“As poet Raja Basu, an admirer of Kashmir observed, Jammu and Kashmir is the confluence of three great religions — Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. It is this confluence which is at the heart of our plurality which needs to be sustained and cherished,” said Justice Ramana.

He emphasized that for the functioning of a healthy democracy, it is imperative that the people feel that their rights and dignity are protected and recognised, and expeditious adjudication of disputes is the hallmark of a healthy democracy.

“Mere laws are not enough to build tradition in a country. It requires men of indelible character inspired by high ideals to infuse life and spirit in the skeleton of the laws,” the CJI said.

“Dear Judges and judicial officers, you play a very significant role in our constitutional scheme. The common man always considered the judiciary as the ultimate guardian of rights and liberties.”

He said often, litigants are under a lot of psychological stress and they may be illiterate, unaware of law and have various financial issues and the judges should try to make them feel at ease.

Justice Ramana said sadly, post-independence, judicial infrastructure has not been over-hauled to meet the demands of growing needs of modern India.

“We are far behind in making our courts inclusive and accessible. If we don’t attend to this urgently, the constitutional ideal of access to justice would stand defeated… The condition of judicial infrastructure across the country is far from satisfactory. Courts are operating from rented accommodations and under deplorable conditions.”

The CJI added that one of the major challenges to the protection of rule of law and human rights is the inability of the formal justice system to deliver speedy and affordable justice to all.

“The justice delivery mechanism in India is very complex and expensive. The judiciary must be at its innovative best to ensure that the challenges to its working are met with just and constitutional measures”, he said and added that in a country like India, where a vast digital divide still exists, much needs to be done in order to harness the full potential of technological innovations.

Citing Winston Churchill, the CJI said: “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us… Although the persons who will occupy this building would be the members of the Bar, the Bench and their support staff, we must not forget that the focal point of any justice delivery system is the litigant, who is the justice seeker.”
