‘Doctor Strange’ casts a spell on box office: $551.6 mn, and counting!

0

Disney/Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ easily will extend its reign over the global box office in its second weekend without any truly fire-breathing competition from rival majors, according to ‘Deadline Hollywood’.

The blockbuster is expected to draw $74 million to $80 million over the weekend, a 57-60 percent decline, but is not likely to affect its position on top of the pecking order.

On Thursday, the North American collections of the Sam Raimi-directed sequel stood at $230.4 million. The Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer has garnered $321.2 million to crank up a global total of $551.6 million in overseas territories.

Hitting the five-century global mark notes Deadline Hollywood’, was “pre-ordained” following a weekend debut that ultimately came in at $449.4 million. That was good for the second-biggest worldwide start for a Hollywood movie during the pandemic era, and the fourth ever for the MCU, behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The sorcerer’s Top 10 offshore markets, as of Tuesday, were Korea ($32 million), the UK ($27.8 million), Mexico ($23.8 million), Brazil ($17.6 million), India ($14.3 million), Australia ($13.7 million), France ($12.9 million), Indonesia ($10.5 million), Japan ($10.3 million) and Germany ($10.2 million).

Musk puts $44 bn Twitter deal ‘on hold’ over fake user accounts

0

San Francisco/New Delhi, May 13 In a stunning post, Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Friday said that he has put the $44 billion Twitter deal temporarily on hold till he gets to know how many fake or spam accounts are present on the micro-blogging platform.

“Twitter deals temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5 percent of users,” Musk said in a tweet to his over 92 million followers.

Twitter’s share price plunged 19 percent on the news of the deal being put on hold.

Musk posted a link to an earlier Reuters story that reported that Twitter estimates spam, and fake accounts comprise less than 5 percent of users.

Twitter estimated in a filing earlier this week that false or spam accounts represented fewer than 5 percent of its monetizable daily active users during the first quarter.

The micro-blogging platform had 229 million users in the first quarter.

Musk has signed a $44 billion deal to take over Twitter, of which he will pay $21 billion from his own pocket while the rest will come as a loan from a consortium of banks.

It’s Elon Musk vs Parag Agrawal at Twitter as the platform suffers

0

New Delhi, May 13 With Elon Musk putting the $44 billion Twitter deal temporarily on hold on Friday, serious questions now linger on the future of the platform that is battling multiple issues — from employee exodus to users leaving amid the ‘free speech’ call that will drive hate speech and abusive content.

Musk now wants to know how many Twitter accounts are spam or fake before he invests a huge sum of money.

The sudden realization came when the micro-blogging platform revealed in a filing earlier this week that false or spam accounts represented fewer than 5 percent of its monetizable daily active users (mDAUs) during the first quarter (Q1).

Amid this, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal sacked a couple of key executives in a bid to “take the team in a different direction”.

Agrawal, who himself faces sacking once Musk takes over, fired consumer product leader Kayvon Beykpour and head of revenue product Bruce Falck.

A “disappointed” Beykpour tweeted: “The truth is that this isn’t how and when I imagined leaving Twitter, and this wasn’t my decision. Parag asked me to leave after letting me know that he wants to take the team in a different direction”.

“While I’m disappointed, I take solace in a few things: I am INSANELY proud of what our collective team achieved over the last few years, and my own contribution to this journey,” he posted.

In addition, Agrawal said that effective this week, Twitter is pausing most hiring and backfills, except for business-critical roles.

“We will also be reviewing all extended offers to determine criticality and those that should be pulled back. We are not planning company-wide layoffs, but leaders will continue making changes to their organizations to improve efficiencies as needed,” Agrawal said in a memo sent to employees.

Before putting the Twitter deal on hold, Musk asked the Parag Agrawal-led platform to reinstate the account of former US President Donald Trump.

“Even though I think a less divisive candidate would be better in 2024, I still think Trump should be restored to Twitter,” he said on Friday.

“Don’t Diss Information,” he posted to his more than 92 million followers.

The latest development indicates a bitter war between Musk and Agrawal.

Musk has specific plans for Twitter products like verifying users who pay for Twitter Blue subscriptions, charging for embedded tweets, and how to further grow Twitter revenue and users.

Meanwhile, Agrawal had begun restructuring the Twitter team, after taking over from Jack Dorsey in November.

Several senior Twitter executives have left in recent days, amid reports of users leaving the platform over ‘free speech concerns.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see more changes coming to Twitter as Musk and Agrawal try to prove their points to the 229 million mDAUs.

Now ‘The Kashmir Files’ is streaming on ZEE 5

0

The Kashmir Files is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film, written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri. The film presents a fictional storyline centered around an exodus of Kashmiri Hindus in the disputed region of Kashmir. It depicts the early 1990s exodus to be a genocide, a notion that is widely considered inaccurate and associated with conspiracy theories.

Now The Kashmir Files is streaming on OTT of ZEE 5 in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil, Kannada languages. The Kashmir Files stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi.

The plot follows a Kashmiri Hindu college student, raised by his exiled grandfather and shielded from the knowledge of the circumstances of the death of his parents. After his grandfather’s death, the student, who had come to believe at college that the exodus was benign, becomes driven to uncover the facts of his family’s deaths. The plot alternates between the student’s quest in the present time, 2020, and his family’s travails of thirty years before.

The film was released in theatres on 11 March 2022. It has been a commercial success, seemingly benefitting from promotion by India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Supporters have praised the film for showing what they say is an overlooked aspect of Kashmir’s history.

Telangana BJP looks to up the ante with Amit Shah’s visit

0

Hyderabad, May 13 The BJP in Telangana looks to up the ante against the TRS government with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit on Saturday.

Shah will address the public meeting at Tukkuguda in Rangareddy district near Hyderabad to mark the culmination of the second leg of state BJP president Bandi Sanjay’s Praja Sangrama Yatra.

The saffron party leaders expect that the senior leader’s visit and speech will act as a morale booster and set the tone for the party’s preparedness for Assembly elections, scheduled next year.

This is Amit Shah’s first visit to Telangana after the BJP won the by-election in Huzurabad in November last year and the first since Telangana Chief Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao renewed his plans to play a key role in national politics by forging an alliance of anti-BJP parties.

Shah’s visit also comes amid the continuing attacks by KCR and his son KTR on the BJP-led government at the Centre for discrimination against Telangana and its failure on various fronts.

During the last few months, the TRS has mounted a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government over rising inflation, unemployment, and incidents of communal violence in various parts of the country. On several occasions, KCR slammed the BJP for spreading communal hatred for its narrow political interests.

Amit Shah is likely to launch a counter-attack on the TRS government and reiterate what BJP’s national president J. P. Nadda claimed at the public meeting in Mahabubnagar last week. Nadda said the people of Telangana want double-engine growth and the results of the Dubbaka by-election in 2020 and Huzurabad in November last year reflect this.

BJP’s state leaders hope that Shah will mount a scathing attack on the TRS government for what they call undemocratic means being adopted to suppress the voice of the BJP. The arrest of Bandi Sanjay and other leaders and the suicide of a party worker in Khammam district may find mentioned in his speech.

This is also Amit Shah’s first visit to Telangana after a bitter war of words between the TRS and BJP over the paddy procurement issue.

Meanwhile, the union minister for Tourism and Culture G. Kishan Reddy on Friday visited Tukkuguda to review the arrangements for the public meeting.

Talking to reporters, Kishan Reddy alleged that KCR and KTR are making false propaganda against the Central government to hide their failures.

Kishan Reddy, who is a member of Parliament from Secunderabad, said KCR was trying to continue the family rule but people have understood this and the results of the Lok Sabha elections and Dubbaka and Huzurabad by-elections reflect people’s anger towards TRS.

Kishan Reddy said Amit Shah would speak on anti-incumbency, corruption, and autocratic rule in Telangana

The saffron party is planning a massive show of strength by mobilizing people in large numbers for the public meeting.

State BJP leaders expect that the meeting will boost the morale of the party and gear up the cadre for the next year’s Assembly elections.

BJP’s show of strength comes close on the heels of the Congress party holding a massive public meeting in Warangal on May 6. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had addressed the meeting, which made a slew of promises for farmers.

Some Central ministers had also participated in the second leg of the padyatra launched on April 14 from Alampur in Jogulamba Gadwal district.

During the month-long foot march, Bandi Sanjay covered 385 km in five districts. He will pass through 105 villages in 10 Assembly constituencies.

Sanjay, who is also a member of Parliament from Karimnagar, walked 10-15 km every day to interact with people to know their problems.

The BJP leader alleged that there is corruption and family rule in the state and all sections of people, including youth, employees, and farmers, are not happy.

The first phase of the yatra started in Hyderabad in August 2021. It lasted for 36 days covering 19 Assembly constituencies and half a dozen Parliamentary constituencies in eight districts.

Kangana Ranaut: ‘Dhaakad’ has longest fight sequence in Hindi cinema

0

New Delhi, May 13 Evoking the image of an Indian Black Widow, the fiery and enigmatic Agent Agni aka Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut is set to enthrall the audiences in her movie ‘Dhaakad’.

She recently visited the Capital along with co-actors Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, producer Deepak Mukut and director Razneesh Ghai. Kangana and the entire cast talked about their roles and the actress emphasized the challenges in portraying her fierce and daring personality.

She spoke about how the movie will compete with Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ at the box office.

Speaking about her look and how she prepared for her role, Kangana shared: “I would like to thank our director for taking up this project and doing a movie with me while everyone suggested to him, ‘how you can do your first movie with Kangana’. I tried to give my best.”

She added while pointing toward the director: “He was most apprehensive about my weight gain due to ‘Thalaivii’ and always asked me, ‘You will lose this weight right? you will lose? and I used to respond, ‘Yes I will,” she laughs and adds: “Even I used to think whether I will be able to be in shape again for this role after looking at his face.”

Razneesh added what was on his mind when he took up this project and Agent Agni’s character: “I wrote the stories for two other guys to portray physically strong woman characters and I wanted to physically push Kangana as she had done ‘Thalaivii’ and so it was a gradual process to lose weight. I wanted to inspire children and today’s generation with this movie.”

Kangana shared: “I wanted to use fake guns for this movie as I got hurt while shooting for ‘Manikarnika’ but my director was keen that I should use real weapons. As far as my training is concerned, since childhood, I have been learning from my action master Surya Narayan Ji, from whom I am learning from the age of 16 or 17, but never got such a role except for a few like ‘Krish’ or ‘Manikarnika’. Moreover, for the movie, a crew came from Hollywood and also from Korea for the training. So, it’s a team effort and no single person can be given the credit.”

She claimed: “This movie has the longest fight sequence in Hindi cinema, approximately 14 minutes.”

Continuing the conversation, Arjun who will be seen as Rudraveer, an international human and arms trafficker in the movie, throws light on his character.

He defined his personality as ‘stylish, brutal, lean, evil-someone without feelings’. “I don’t think anybody has presented me like this. I am returning to the big screen after a long hiatus, and I don’t think I could have had a better opportunity and a better director to come on board and do this wonderful film.”

Divya briefed about playing a grey-shaded character, Rohini in the movie: “‘Dhaakad’ is a really special movie for me. This is especially true because sometimes, one is able to receive a complete package. This is a totally different sort of role. It’s a negative one. I got the opportunity to participate in numerous crazy mean streaks, which was really fun.”

“There were some amazing scenes that I think I will remember for the rest of my life. It’s something really beautiful. It’s so nice to be cast against your type, and that was really wonderful. I am so glad I have the most fantabulous co-stars with me. I think I will look back and have a broad smile,” she added.

Talking about the competition between ‘Dhaakad’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, Kangana said: “We cannot always get a solo release. It isn’t like that these films are released on 5000 or 7000 screens. They both can simultaneously come and do well at the same time.”

On many Indian movies adapting from foreign films and ‘Dhaakad’ having original content, Kangana said: “Definitely this is an original idea.”

Arjun Rampal added: “I would like to add something. Rajneesh and I were talking recently. He received a call from the action directors. They said that the action scenes looked so amazing that they wanted to enter the movie for the acting awards that are held in Hollywood.”

The actress also shared her perspective about South films doing well and getting a good response from the audience in comparison to Bollywood films.

She said: “I have been the biggest cheerleader for South Indian films. If you see, I was the first one to start the topic of “our regional cinema should do well. We all should do something by coming together to save our screens from Hollywood or international films, because the Italian, French and German, and English film industries have single-handedly destroyed everyone. We must promote South, Malayalam, Kannada, or Punjabi films. We should be scared of the American film industry.”

On the question of women-centric movies being made less in the industry, Kangana said: “We should look at a film just as a film. We shouldn’t attach sexuality to it.

Divya also asserted: “I think we should cease demarcating women-centric and men-centric movies. Once this happens, normalcy will come by itself.”

Arjun concluded: “We have come from an era when women had limited rights and there was no equality. Ever since I arrived in the film industry, I’ve done at least one women-oriented movie per year. I think that this is because my support system is primarily comprised of women, which includes my mother, my sister, and now my daughters.”

Directed by Razneesh Ghai, ‘Dhaakad’ is presented by Soham Rockstar Entertainment Pvt Ltd in association with Kamal Mukut, Sohel Maklai Productions, and Asylum Films.

It features Kangana Ranaut as Agent Agni in the lead role with Arjun Rampal, Divya Dutta, and Saswata Chatterjee in supporting roles.

Important to strike a balance with social media exposure, says actor Siddharth

0

Mumbai, May 13 Actor Siddharth has been a part of numerous projects but has never essayed the role of a content moderator, which incidentally is his next performance in Disney+ Hotstar’s upcoming series – Escaype Live. Sharing details about his character in his OTT debut project, Siddharth spelled out his own views on social media as well.

“I play a content moderator in Escaype Live. It’s a character that enables you to see the world of Escaype through him and his ambitions and motivations. As far as social media is concerned in today’s world, it’s important to strike a balance in its exposure. Excess to anything is bad. And in today’s time, people need to have more real interactions as compared to virtual gratification. The internet is a make-believe place that mirrors your real life. An individual needs to be as careful as one can be.”

‘Escaype Live’ is a fictional story, penned by Jaya Mishra and Siddharth Kumar Tewary, that could very well be true and real. The story features a bunch of content creators, on different paths but with one goal – to produce viral content to emerge victorious in a life-changing competition announced by the hottest new app in the country called Escaype Live.

Produced under Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s One Life Studios, the nine-episode series emphasizes the human tendency to be competitive and the drive to succeed. The series explores the lengths content creators and tech giants are willing to travel to achieve their aspirations.

Set across different cities of India, the series leveraged different dialogue writers for each city to add regional authenticity. Dance Rani’s story based in Jaisalmer saw her dialogues being penned by Vinod Sharma while Amcha’s lines were penned by Amol Surve. Similarly, Banaras-based characters of Meenakumari and Sunaina’s dialogues were written by Ranveer Pratap Singh while Darkie and Fetish Girl’s dialogues were penned by Jaya Mishra and Siddharth Kumar Tewary.

The cast includes Jaaved Jaaferi, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Sumedh Mudgalkar, Swastika Mukherjee, Plabita Borthakur, and Waluscha D’Souza, Ritvik Sahore, Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, Jagjeet Sandhu, Rohit Chandel and child actor Aadyaa Sharma among others.

Karachi, May 13  At least one person was dead and several others were injured in a bomb explosion in Karachi’s Saddar area, police said on Friday.

Between six and nine vehicles were damaged in the explosion, which occurred on Daud Pota Road, Samaa TV reported.

Police officials said the explosion was likely caused by an IED planted at the site.

They said a vehicle of the Pakistan Coast Guards was a possible target. However, the personnel in the vehicle remained unhurt, Samaa TV reported.

Information Minister Sharjeel Minister confirmed that at least three people had been wounded, but other reports put the number of wounded at 11.

Shahid Rasool, the executive director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), said that one person had been killed. His body was moved to JPMC, located a few kilometers from the blast site.

JPMC Additional Police Surgeon Sumaiyya Tariq Syed confirmed nine injured have been brought to JPMC, adding that two of them were in critical condition.

“A 25-year-old victim was brought dead who was the hospital employer too,” Syed said.

Hospital sources said the injured suffered ball-bearing wounds, a hallmark of terrorist bombings in Pakistan.

The police cordoned off the area and called in the bomb disposal squad.

People were told to step away from the site as officials feared the first blast could be followed by another explosion.
