Not right for talks with India, says Pakistan

0

Islamabad, May 13 The Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) said that doors for diplomacy on outstanding disputes with India remain open, but noted that the environment for a constructive dialogue was lacking.

Responding to questions on ties with India at a briefing, FO spokesman Asim Iftikhar said: “In diplomacy, you never shut the doors.”

He said that there was a national consensus on this issue and successive governments had pursued the same policy of seeking peaceful settlement of disputes with India, reports Dawn news.

The questions were asked in the context of overtures by the new government and the appointment of a trade minister in Delhi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi had exchanged messages after the former was elected to the top post on April 11.

The spokesman, while answering a question, noted that notwithstanding Pakis tan’s desire for a diplomatic resolution of disputes, “the environment for a fruitful, constructive dialogue is not there”.

With a change in the Pakistan federal government, the Commerce Ministry has ruled out the possibility of a resumption of stalled bilateral trade with India, Dawn reported.

The response came from the commerce ministry over the widespread speculation on social media that the new government led by Sharif is considering a proposal to resume trade with its arch-rival India.

“There is no change in Pakistan’s policy on trade with India,” an official announcement from the Ministry said.

An official source in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat told Dawn news that the appointment of a trade officer in New Delhi is one of the routine postings, adding that the post of trade officer in the Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi has been vacant for years.

The Prime Minister has approved a senior officer of the Commerce and Trade Group, Qamar Zaman, for posting in New Delhi. He is one of the 15 officers appointed for posting in various countries.

“The selection process for the appointment of all these trade officers was started by the previous government,” the official in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat said.

“We have not changed anything in the summary of the previous government,” the source said, adding the selection process was found on merit.

Ajaz Patel, and Michael Bracewell were awarded central contracts by New Zealand Cricket

0

Auckland, May 13 Thirty-three-year-old left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel and all-rounder Michael Bracewell were among the 20 names offered central contracts for 2022/23 by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Friday.

Patel, who had missed out last year, returned to the fold after a series of superb performances. He helped New Zealand to a Test victory in England in June 2021 and was the top wicket-taker in the five-match T20I series against Bangladesh in September. In a stunning display of spin bowling, he claimed a 14-wicket haul in Mumbai against India in December.

The other new name on the list, 31-year-old Michael Bracewell, has been offered his maiden contract. Bracewell was the captain of the New Zealand XI side against the Netherlands in March this year and top-scored for them in the two 50-over games with 81 and an unbeaten 127, according to ICC.

He made his ODI debut in the same month against the Netherlands and has played three internationals so far.

“Finalising the list seems to get tougher by the year,” said New Zealand head coach Gary Stead.

“The busy international calendar means we’re calling on a wider base of talent these days and the likes of Michael Bracewell are testament to the depth of that talent. Michael’s been consistently performing on the domestic circuit for seasons now and we certainly see him as an international prospect in all three formats.

“It’s great to see Ajaz back on the list after narrowly missing out last season. His value as our leading red-ball spinner is clear and we’re excited to see the role he could play in the Test team going forward.

“I’d like to congratulate all 20 players who have received a national contract offer for the coming season and wish those heading away this winter all the best. I’d also like to acknowledge Ross Taylor and his immense contribution to the Black Caps over a long and successful career,” Stead added.

The two names missing from the previous list are Ross Taylor, who retired from international cricket last month, and James Neesham.

Neesham has not played a Test since 2017 and has struggled to find form in white-ball cricket. He last played an ODI in March 2021 and has picked only three wickets in his last 10 T20Is.

Contracted players’ list 2022/23: Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young.

Test cricket returns with Bangladesh set to take on Sri Lanka

0

Chattogram, May 13 After a brief lull, World Test Championship 2023 cricket returns with Bangladesh hosting Sri Lanka for a two-Test series beginning at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here on Sunday.

The matches could prove to be a turning point for both sides, with Sri Lanka desperate to make a bid to move up the standings, and Bangladesh eager to make the most of the opportunity to climb from the eighth position they find themselves in on the nine-team table.

This will be the first assignment for new Sri Lankan head coach Chris Silverwood after he stepped down as England’s chief coach in the wake of the Ashes debacle. He takes over from Mickey Arthur, who enjoyed a successful tenure with the Sri Lankan team. Silverwood is supported by the assistant Naveed Nawaz, who himself put his name forward for the top role.

A number of fringe Sri Lankan players could get the opportunity to impress the selectors as several players are either injured or have retired. In fact, Suranga Lakmal’s retirement could open the door for new faces to find their names on the team sheet when the captains meet for the toss.

Lahiru Thirimanne has requested three months of paternity leave, Pathum Nissanka is recovering from injury, while Charith Asalanka has been told to focus on limited-overs formats. Who accompanies Dimuth Karunaratne at the top of the order remains a big question for the tourists given the absent players, with Oshada Fernando potentially the man to move up, according to ICC. The uncapped Kamindu Mendis, who made his name as an ambidextrous spinner, may wind up in the playing XI more for his batting, after a blazing domestic first-class season.

On the Bangladesh side, a long-awaited Shakib Al Hasan’s return will take a little longer after the world No.4 all-rounder tested positive for Covid-19, with hopes that he will be available for the second match in Mirpur. Mehidy Hasan Miraz is also out, with pace spearhead Taskin Ahmed also injured after suffering a shoulder injury in South Africa.

It will be a Test debut for Rejaur Rahman Raja and Shohidul Islam should they be selected.

The teams played out a run-fest at the same ground in 2018, with Sri Lanka compiling 713/9 declared after the home side put up 513 across days one and two.

Kusal Mendis (196) and Dhananjaya de Silva (173) put up a second-wicket partnership of 308 to ensure the tourists kept up in the match, with Roshen Silva (109), Dinesh Chandimal (87), and Niroshan Dickwella (62) all relishing in the conditions.

Roshen is the only member of the five not to return for the 2022 series, with Dimuth Karunaratne, Sri Lanka’s form batter of the 2023 WTC cycle, who made a duck in the match.

As will be the case on Sunday, Shakib al Hasan was also not part of the team for their 2018 meeting. Mushfiqur Rahim (4932) and Tamim Iqbal (4848) are both approaching the 5000-Test run barrier, a first for Bangladesh cricket.

Italian Open: Zverev beats De Minaur to reach quarter-finals

0

Rome, May 12 World No. 3 Alexander Zverev beat Australian Alex de Minaur 6-3 7-6(5) to reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open, here on Thursday.

The German, who arrived in the Italian capital off the back of a run to the final at the Madrid Open, won 76 percent (31/41) of his first-serve points and recovered from squandering a break advantage in the second set to eventually triumph after one hour and 50 minutes.

“My performance was better than yesterday. I managed to keep my focus,” Zverev said after the win.

“Alex is a great player and he is a great returner, so losing your serve here and there can happen. I need to work on serving out a little more. I tried to stay aggressive. I had to hit my shots quite hard against Alex and it worked out well today,” he added.

The 25-year-old Zverev is still aiming to capture his first title of the season, but has now won six of his past seven matches and will aim to improve that record when he plays Chilean Cristian Garin or Croatian Marin Cilic in the last eight. It is the fifth time Zverev has advanced to the quarter-finals at a tour-level event in 2022.

The five-time Masters 1000 champion is making his sixth appearance in the Italian capital, with his best result at the clay-court tournament a run to the title in 2017.

With his victory, Zverev now leads de Minaur 6-1 in their ATP head-to-head series, with this their first meeting on clay. The World No 22 was trying to reach the quarter-finals at a Masters 1000 event for the first time, after defeating Dusan Lajovic and Tommy Paul earlier this week.

IPL 2022: Manjrekar calls to get rid of “completely redundant” bails after Chahal-Warner incident

0

Navi Mumbai, May 12 Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has called for getting rid of “completely redundant” in modern-day cricket after an incident featuring Yuzvendra Chahal and David Warner in Wednesday’s IPL 2022 match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at DY Patil Stadium.

In the ninth over of Delhi’s successful chase of 161, Warner had a huge slice of luck when on last ball of the over, a leg break from Chahal went past his bat and brushed the leg stump. It was sufficient to light the stumps but not enough to dislodge one of the bails, which is a requirement for a clean bowled dismissal.

Eventually, Warner was unbeaten at 52 with Mitchell Marsh leading the chase with a 62-ball 89 as Delhi got a much-needed win by eight wickets.

“I’ve said this before as well, it’s redundant now with the LED stumps to have the bails on. Today it would’ve been a wicket deserving for Chahal who bowled superbly. It was a terrible shot from Warner, and it didn’t get a wicket. Unless it’s adding an aesthetic value, they should just get rid of the bails because they’re completely redundant with LED technology,” said Manjrekar on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time: Out show.

Manjrekar further called for bails to be removed for the game to be in sync with technology. “(The bails were used) just to be sure the ball has hit the stumps they had these bails on top, because if the ball just kissed the stumps you won’t know if there weren’t any bails. And the bails were meant to fall off if the stumps were disturbed. But now that you have a sensor, you know the ball has hit the stumps, so why are the bails there?”

Further explaining the problem with bails, Manjrekar said, “If you have the technology, don’t have the bails. The other problem with bails is, when there is a stumping, you wait to it to light up and then you’re talking about whether both the bails are off the grooves and there’s just a lot of complication when you’re judging stumped or run out. Just keep it simple.”

“I know it won’t happen because we don’t like to change too many things. We tweak few other rules, but certain very obvious things aren’t done. Getting rid of bails may sound scandalous to lot of people but it defies common sense.”

IPL 2022: Very lucky to be picked by Mumbai Indians; got to learn a lot, says Tilak Varma

0

Mumbai, May 12 In a forgettable season for Mumbai Indians, young left-handed batter Tilak Varma has been a bright spot, becoming the highest run-getter for the franchise with 334 runs in eleven matches at an average of 37.11 and strike rate of 136.32.

Earning praise from all quarters for his free-flowing stroke-play, Varma counts himself lucky on being picked by Mumbai in the IPL Mega Auction earlier this year.

“I am very lucky to play for Mumbai Indians because they had legendary cricketers in the team like Mahela sir, Sachin sir. I am very lucky to be picked by the MI team as I got to learn a lot and also got a chance to implement them in the matches,” said Varma on MI TV show on Star Sports.

Varma recalled seeing the proceedings of the mega auction and recalled seeing him being picked by Mumbai as a ‘dream come true’. “From the 1st day of auction I got myself glued to the TV as I was eagerly waiting for my name to flash on the screen and later when I saw me getting selected for MI team it was a moment of a dream coming true.”

“Since childhood I have been watching Rohit sir, Sachin sir and MI has always managed to come back and win the match in any circumstances so that is the one reason why I like MI so much.”
Remembering the first time he met captain Rohit Sharma, Varma was left starstruck. “When the first time I saw Rohit Sharma, I got goosebumps on my arm. I wanted to hug and convey my admiration for him but I was very surprised and nervous when I saw him and at the same time I was a little scared too to interact with him.”

Varma, 19, who featured in India’s squad during the U19 Men’s World Cup in 2020, credited his coach in Hyderabad, Salam Bayash, for making him reach where he is currently.

“I started my cricket journey when I was just 11 years old. My coach, Salam Bayash is the main person in my life who encouraged me to play cricket and taught me how to play in every situation. He plays a very important role in my life. If it was not him, I wouldn’t have been playing cricket today so all the credit goes to him.”

Ford India drops EV plans, workers shocked

0

Chennai, May 12  Shelving its plans to roll out electric vehicles out of its two plants, Ford India Pvt Ltd will resume compensation talks with its workers.

“The management has told the workers that it has no plans to make electric vehicles in India. The management has called for talks with the Union for compensation to be paid to the workers on the closure of the plant,” a Ford India Union official told IANS.

He said the compensation talks were stopped as the company had plans to make electric vehicles at its two plants – Chennai and Sanand in Gujarat.

Ford had sent its application to the Central government under the production linked incentive scheme.

According to him, from June onwards, the Chennai plant is expected to close down.

Currently, the plant rolls out EcoSport for the export market, he added.

In September 2021, Ford India announced its decision to wind down vehicle assembly in Sanand in Gujarat by the fourth quarter of 2021, and vehicle and engine manufacturing in Chennai by the second quarter of 2022.

Ford India has four plants in the country – vehicle and engine plants in Chennai and Sanand.

Ford’s “quit India” decision will result in an uncertain future for about 5,300 employees – workers and staff, the officials said last year.

The Chennai plant has about 2,700 associates (permanent workers) and about 600 staff.

“In Sanand, the number of workers will be about 2,000,” Sanand workers’ union General Secretary Nayan Kateshiya had told IANS earlier.

Ford India had said more than 500 employees at the Sanand engine plant, which produces engines for export, and about 100 employees supporting parts distribution and customer service, also will continue to support Ford’s business in India.

According to Ford India, about 4,000 employees are expected to be affected by its decision.

The workers at Ford India want the prospective buyer of the car plants to hire them.

IPL 2022: Itinerant cricketers Karthik, de Kock, Miller, Saha relishing new challenges at new teams

0

Mumbai, May 12 It’s never easy for a cricketer to join a new team and start performing straightway especially in a high-pressure and competitive tournament like IPL but there are exceptional players like Dinesh Karthik, Quinton de Kock, Mitchell Marsh and others, who have adjusted to the new environment quite nicely and have become a vital cog in the success of their respective franchises.
hree big superstars of Indian cricket — Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore), MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) and Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) are players who have been synonymous with their respective IPL teams and they have also made immensense contribution in the growth and popularity of the leagues.

However, there are many players who have not been able to find permanent homes for themselves in the cash-rich league. Usually, they have moved from one team to another after a season or two due to various reasons like poor form, injury or because of not fitting in the scheme of things.

Most often, these cricketers have found it difficult to adjust to the new management, culture, environment and different playing conditions. But like every other thing, there are few exceptions here as well. In the ongoing season of IPL 2022, there are many experienced campaigners, who are representing new teams, but in a very short span of time, they have become match winners for them.

A look at the brief journey of these players at the IPL:

Dinesh Karthik

The 36-year old Karthik, is a veteran campaigner in the IPL and has been involved in all the editions of the league since the inaugural 2008 season.

The wicket-keeper batter has represented six teams over the course of his IPL career. He started off with Delhi Daredevils in 2008 before moving to Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He spent the following two seasons with Mumbai Indians before going back to Delhi in 2014. RCB bagged him in 2015 and he played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 before spending four seasons with KKR.

Ahead of the 2022 edition of the league, Karthik was released by KKR and was bought by RCB for Rs 5.5 crore in the mega Auction. This will be Karthik’s second stint with RCB after the 2015 season and it seems, he was saving his best for IPL 2022. When the wicket-keeper was playing for RCB in 2015, it was a completely different set-up and Karthik too has upgraded his batting style since then.

The veteran, who has IPL career tally of 4320 runs in 225 matches, is doing a finisher’s job for the RCB and scored 274 runs in 12 matches with an superb strike-rate of 200.00, this season. Cricket fans are highly impressed by Karthik’s heroics with the bat and want him to be a part of the Indian team for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. If RCB manage to reach the playoffs and eventually want to win the title, they would certainly ‘DK’ at his best in the upcoming matches of the IPL 2022.

Quinton de Kock

De Kock, one of the most exciting wicketkeeper-batters in world cricket, started his IPL journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad and then played for Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next few seasons. However, his best in IPL came with the Mumbai Indians, where the Proteas cricketer played quickfire knocks at the top and also did a solid job behind the wickets, helping MI win back to back titles in 2019 and 2020.

Despite his impactful contributions, five champions MI, didn’t retain de Kock and even didn’t buy him in the auction. Mumbai’s loss became Lucknow Super Giants’ gain after the new franchise bought the left-hander for Rs 6.75 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

In the ongoing season, de Kock has scored 355 runs in 12 matches and given LSG solid starts along with skipper KL Rahul. His explosive hitting is making things easier for Rahul partners and putting pressure on the opposition.

David Miller

After playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) over a number of years, Miller was bought by Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2020. Despite playing just one game in the IPL 2020, the franchise retained him for the IPL 2021 and he had an average season with the bat.

Known for his ability to single-handedly change the course of the match by hitting huge sixes, Miller was far from his best in the last couple of IPL seasons. But, new franchise Gujarat Titans, who bought him for Rs 3 cr in the mega auction, seem to bring the best out of the Proteas batter.

Gujarat has become the first team to qualify for the playoffs and Miller certainly played a vital role in that. The left-hander has scored 332 in 12 matches and finished matches for GT at most occasions under tremendous pressure. The Hardik Pandya led side would certainly want Miller to maintain his brilliant form in the play-off matches.

Mitchell Marsh

Marsh, who is known for his hard-hitting skills and pace bowling prowess, has played for multiple franchises — Deccan Chargers, Rising Pune Supergiants, Pune Warriors (all three defunct now) and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous editions of IPL. However, the Australian has never played for the full season either because of his injuries or bad-form. So, in a way, Indian fans haven’t seen Marsh at his best consistently in the IPL.

The star all-rounder was bought by Delhi Capitals for 6.50 cr in the mega auction and once again he missed half of matches in the IPL 2022 for the franchise due to hip flexor injury and Covid-19. But in his limited number of outings (6 matches), Marsh has scored 188 runs with an strike rate of 134.28 and picked 4 wickets for the DC.

On Wednesday, nearly six months after that surreal innings in the 2021 T20 World Cup final in Dubai, Marsh played a match-winning knock of 89 runs for Delhi against Rajasthan Royals. The Rishab Pant led side have two more league matches to play and inform Marsh could play a pivotal role in their campaign.

Wriddhiman Saha

Athletic wicketkeeper and a more than handy contributor with the bat, Saha has displayed his skills for Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in earlier editions of IPL. His glovework is second to none and the veteran has tried to make the most of his opportunities with the bat as well while turning up for his respective franchises.

He has been used as an opener in the past by the franchises and Saha has notched up some breezy half centuries in the process, scoring 2324 runs in 140 IPL matches.

A new challenge awaited Saha in Gujarat Titans and so far he has passed the test with flying colours. In the ongoing season, Saha has scored 214 runs in 7 matches, which includes two fifties while batting at the top-order.

Aaron Finch

Kolkata Knight Riders signed Aaron Finch as a replacement for England batter Alex Hales for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. The Australian batter, who has played 92 IPL games and has 2091 runs, joined KKR at the price of Rs 1.5 crore.

When it comes to IPL, Finch is no stranger having played for eight other franchises — Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore — since his IPL debut in 2010. KKR is Finch’s ninth IPL franchise and despite his vast experience, the attacking batter has never been consistent with his performances and has most often disappointed the cricket fans and experts.

In the ongoing IPL 2022 as well, Finch has scored just 86 runs in five matches and was dropped for the KKR’s last game against Mumbai Indians.

Telangana: Man rapes tribal woman even after her death

0

Hyderabad, May 12 In a horrific incident, a man raped a tribal woman even after she died while resisting his sexual assault.

A construction worker committed the heinous crime at Choutuppal near Hyderabad on Monday night but was arrested by police on Wednesday.

According to police, E. Harish Goud raped and brutally killed the 28-year-old tribal woman working in a brick kiln warehouse at Choutuppal in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, about 40 km from Hyderabad.

Finding the victim alone in the warehouse, the accused sought sexual favours. When she refused and threatened to reveal this to her husband, he tried to sexually assault her. As she resisted, he hit her on the face with a log, resulting in bleeding injury.

Police investigations revealed that though the victim succumbed to the assault, he still raped her. After committing the act, he robbed the silver articles she was wearing and escaped.

When the victim’s husband reached the warehouse, he found her in a pool of blood. He informed the police, which registered a case and took up investigation.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, N. Uday Reddy, the couple, belonging to Nagarkurnool district, had migrated to Choutuppal for livelihood and were working as guards at the warehouse for the past two months.

The accused, hailing from Sangareddy district, was working at a dairy beside it. As the victim’s husband was working at a college nearby, she used to be alone in the warehouse. Taking advantage of this, Goud tried to sexually rape her. When she resisted, he battered her face with a log, resulting in her death. The accused confessed to the crime when police picked up and questioned him.

The 25-year-old has been booked for rape, robbery and murder. Chouttuppal police registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The accused was produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody.

Brazil, Argentina friendly in Australia called off

0

Rio (Brazil), May 12 An international friendly between Brazil and Argentina scheduled to be played in Australia next month has been called off, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on Wednesday.

CBF coordinator Juninho Paulista said the match, slated for the Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 11, was canceled at the request of the Argentine Football Association.

“We were prepared, with all the necessary logistics for this game, because we understood that we had to fulfill this contract,” Juninho told a news conference.
