IPL 2022: Kumar Kartikeya Singh, Mumbai’s mystery spinner, still has miles to go in his cricketing journey

0

Mumbai, May 12 He bowls everything in spin with his left-arm. When IPL 2022 began, Kumar Kartikeya Singh was a net bowler for Mumbai Indians. But an injury to Mohammad Arshad Khan meant he was drafted into the main squad and made his debut mid-season against Rajasthan Royals with an impressive 1/19.

Since then, Kartikeya has impressed everyone with his skills and has seen his life turn around in a few short weeks. From Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, to toiling in Delhi, moving to Madhya Pradesh for cricketing opportunities and excelling in the biggest stage of his life while donning the Mumbai Indians jersey, Kartikeya’s run in IPL has been pretty eventful. But the 24-year-old’s yearning for cricket came through his father.

“He was watching a match on TV, I was very young then, and Virender Sehwag was batting. I didn’t know much about cricket then. I saw that my dad enjoyed watching cricket so my interest in the sport developed, and I thought I should also play it,” shared Kartikeya in a video posted by the franchise on their social media handles.

The pursuit of cricket took Kartikeya on a long journey, which demanded a move to Delhi for better opportunities. “The first year in Delhi was a long struggle. Then I met Sanjay Bharadwaj sir there. He saw me bowl only one ball. And as soon as he saw that he said, he told me, ‘You do one thing, stay here with me. I will take care of whatever you need’.”

“Sir has taken care of me like I’m his own son. I stayed with him for six years. He took care of every single cricketing expense. I was playing in Delhi at that time. I performed too, but in the trials, I didn’t get selected. Then sir told me, ‘You should go to Madhya Pradesh’. I reached Shahdol and played trial matches and practice matches there, and for the first time, I got selected in the Under-23 side, as a standby.”

The move to Madhya Pradesh began to bear fruit as Kartikeya moved from U23 to senior cricket. “Then next year, my name was listed for a Ranji Trophy trial match. I did well there and got to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. I called my father for the first time in six years. When he spoke to me, he was very happy but didn’t show it. He told me that it’s good I’ve played at this level, but life can take me ahead too, and there’s lots more to do. He hung up the phone after saying this.”

Kartikeya’s father, a police officer, didn’t display much emotions that time. But when he made his debut for Mumbai Indians, the smile which he had seen as a kid came back. “I told my dad that I’m playing the match, so he told his entire battalion that, and they put a projector for everyone to see (match against Rajasthan Royals).”

“When I took my first wicket, they all gave a standing ovation and hugged my dad. When he shared that video with me after the game, it was a completely different joy for me because I saw my father having the same joy that I had seen in childhood and when I just started playing.”

Before his IPL debut, Kartikeya experienced joy on rubbing shoulders alongside stalwarts of the game. “When I came, the first person I saw was Rohit bhaiyya. I couldn’t take my eyes off him! It was the first time I was seeing someone in the flesh, who earlier I had seen only on TV! Then I saw Sachin sir, face to face.”

“Mumbai Indians have supported me a lot. Rahul (Sanghvi) sir, Bondy (Shane Bond) sir, Mahela sir, Zaheer sir everyone spoke to me about bowling patterns, what can be done where, how to plan your bowling.”

“When I entered the ground, and it was time for me to bowl, Rohit bhaiyya handed me the ball, and told me I would be bowling the next over. He told me to bowl ‘bindaas’ (without worries). ‘I’ll take care of everything. You just focus on bowling.'”

It has been well-documented that Kartikeya hasn’t been home in nine years to fulfil the promise made to himself of coming back only after he had achieved something. Going home after an impressive IPL 2022 would have been perfect. But Kartikeya has got his focus on the next mission after IPL 2022:- to turn out for Madhya Pradesh, who have qualified for Ranji Trophy knockouts.

“When I left home, I thought I’d return only after having accomplished something. After the IPL gets over, the MP team needs me, because the Ranji Trophy knockouts will be there. So I’ll play those first and only then return home. I’ll be going home after nine years so I’m quite excited to see what my parents’ reaction will be.”

Focusing on bowling is what Kartikeya wants to do to excel in future. As his father said to him, “You’ve got this jersey now (the Mumbai Indians one), and now you have to focus on the future.”

Disney announces 100 original shows for Indian OTT market

0

New Delhi, May 12 As content streaming heats up in India, The Walt Disney Company has revealed that it is working on 100 original shows in local content for the country where its Disney+Hotstar OTT platform is currently the leader.

The company, which added 7.9 million new subscribers to Disney+ in the March quarter (Q1), taking the total to 137.9 million, said during the earnings call late on Wednesday that it has about 500 shows in the pipeline for local content outside of the US or English speaking.

“When you look at that 500, I’ll give you some broad breakdowns. In the Asia-Pacific region, including Southeast Asia, of that 500, 140 is in that region. In EMEA, it’s 150. In India, it’s 100. And in Latin America, it’s 200,” said Christine McCarthy, Senior Executive Vice President and CFO, The Walt Disney Company.

Disney’s video streaming service Disney+Hotstar added 2.6 million paid subscribers for the quarter ended January 1, taking its total base to 45.9 million users.

Although the company did not break down the recent figure of 7.9 million new subscribers, it is obvious that a bulk of new users are coming from India where the OTT consumption has exploded.

“We ended Q2 with more than 205 million total subscriptions after adding 9.2 million in the quarter. That includes 7.9 million Disney+ subscribers, keeping us on track to reach 230 million to 260 million Disney+ subscribers by fiscal 2024,” said Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

The announcement of 100 new original shows for the Indian market came after Amazon Prime Video said last month that it will launch 40 new titles in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu across original shows, movies and co-productions in the next two years.

“Our world-class creative teams are focused on creating content that will drive subscriber growth in targeted segments and deeper engagement across the platform. This includes leveraging our existing intellectual property. Also, we’re intent on creating new franchises,” said McCarthy.

Sudha Chandran gets a chance to play a double role after 35 years

0

Mumbai, May 12 Actress Sudha Chandran was always fascinated by double roles and feels lucky to have finally got the chance to play it in her show ‘Naagin 6’.

The actress, who plays the role of Seema and her mother Tara in the show, says that she loves the variations between the two characters.

“This is the first time that I have played a double role. It’s very exciting and I always wanted to do a double role. Each time I saw actors doing double roles, I always longed to do one but I never got the chance. After 35-36 years, Balaji Telefilms gave me the opportunity and I simply loved it,” she says.

On elaborating about the variations she has made in two characters, she explains: “I always felt that the variation is very important, if you see me in ‘Naagin 6’, the character of Tara that I am playing is of adivasi and I have made it very rustic and kept very black makeup.”

“It looks very rustic and low but when it came to Seema’s character, which I am playing as well, I have plaits and a long bindi. It is a cute looking image. As an actor when I saw myself, I was very convinced that these two looks are so different and unique,” she says.

While talking about the challenges, she adds: “The challenging part in playing a double role is that you have to look different. The mannerisms have to be different, especially when you are in the same frame. The fun part is seeing yourself play the two characters.”

The actress says that people are also loving this sequence.

“People have called me up, applauded and have loved the performance. In fact, they said that ‘Naagin mein ab maza aa raha hai’ as the negative track has started. The story has been scripted so well, kudos to Balaji Telefilms who have come up with such a brilliant idea. I have given my 100 per cent and the rest I have left to God,” she says.

Talking about how she got to know about the role, she says that it came as a total surprise.

“Initially, I remember that the costume designer sent me a message saying that these are Seema’s mother’s sarees and I said that maybe you have sent these to me by mistake as I am playing Seema. She said that I am playing a double role and that time I was really taken aback as it was a surprise, nobody told me about it. But I was never nervous as I believed in my talent and I was prepared,” she says.

Sudha says that content on TV is also evolving thanks to the chances available on OTT.

“There is a big threat coming from OTT and now, when you see television, the content is very good. On OTT, there is wonderful content coming in so television writers and makers cannot take it lying low, so yes there are lot of innovations happening in television as well now,” she concludes.

Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan plan to compensate investors for ‘Acharya’ losses

0

Hyderabad, May 12 The recent ‘Acharya’, featuring megastar Chiranjeevi and his son Ram Charan, turned out to be a box office disaster.

Ram Charan is reportedly making up for the losses, as many investors who hoped for a blockbuster invested a lot of money and lost money.

Following the film’s lukewarm reception around the world, a distributor recently wrote Chiranjeevi an open letter requesting compensation for the losses.

Directed by Koratala Siva, ‘Acharya’ failed to impress, despite the fact that Telugu’s most-hyped father-son duo Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan appeared together on screen.

Furthermore, with Koratala Siva on board, the investors did not expect the film to be such a disaster.

The news that Ram Charan is planning to compensate a portion of the film’s losses has sparked hope among buyers and distributors, who have suffered huge losses.

Chiranjeevi, on the other hand, will be seen in ‘Godfather’, ‘Bholaa Shankar’, and a couple of other movies.

No price hike for ‘F3’ tickets: Producers

0

Hyderabad, May 12 Big-budget Telugu films are increasingly being released with a huge hike in ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana but the team of ‘F3’ has reportedly decided against raising ticket prices.

According to early reports, the producers of ‘F3’ have decided to use standard ticket prices.

A rise in the ticket prices can be considered as one of the factors which have caused a certain amount of damage to the recently released movies.

Movies like ‘Radhe Shyam’, ‘Acharya’, and ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’, being subject to hike in the ticket prices, had an impact on the bookings.

‘F3’ will thus be one of the first Telugu films to be released with regular ticket prices. However, official confirmation from the producers is awaited.

On the May 27, Venkatesh, Varun Tej, Tamannah, and Mehreen-starrer ‘F3’ will be released in theatres.

Sonal Chauhan, Rajendra Prasad, Pragathi, Annapurna, and others will appear in important roles, while Pooja Hegde will be seen in a special song in the film, which is directed by Anil Ravipudi.

IPL 2022: Cricketing greats applaud Hardik Pandya in guiding Gujarat Titans to playoffs

0

Mumbai, May 11  On Tuesday, Indian Premier League (IPL) newbies Gujarat Titans became the first team to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2022, defeating fellow debutants Lucknow Super Giants by 62 runs to book their knockouts berth in style.

Before the start of the tournament, not many had given Hardik Pandya & Co. a chance to be in the last four stages. But with the team performing exceedingly well and Pandya emerging as a captain leading a unit that clicks in unison, experts have been left applauding the all-rounder’s leadership in making Gujarat the team to beat in IPL 2022.

Matthew Hayden, the former Australia cricketer who won IPL 2010 with Chennai Super Kings, reckons Pandya is showing all the qualities of a good leader in the ongoing tournament as he keeps performing well against big teams.

“Good cricketers, good leaders in particular keep their best for the best of times and that’s Hardik Pandya (for you) right now. He’s performing well in all departments. I love his energy and the enthusiasm that he brings to the table,” said Hayden on the Cricket Live show on Star Sports.

IPL 2022 also marks Pandya’s return to competitive cricket after Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE last year. In the ongoing tournament, Pandya has amassed 344 runs in 11 games at an impressive strike rate of 131.80, including three half-centuries while taking four wickets with his right-arm pace.

Former India batting great Sunil Gavaskar lauded Pandya’s all-around skills combined with discipline shown in the tournament. “Hat’s off to the hard work he’s been putting in. He didn’t play a lot of cricket before the IPL because he was recovering from an injury. (Now) Look at the discipline he’s showing in his batting. He’s batting well in the powerplay and making full use of the field restrictions, he’s doing exceedingly well in the field and getting better with every game.”

Harbhajan Singh, who shared the dressing room with Pandya during his time with Mumbai Indians, believes a player like him requires breathing space, which he is getting in the leadership role with Gujarat. “A player like Hardik should have the freedom to work on his game, and he’s getting that at Gujarat Titans. For me, he is the best captain in this season so far.”

“He is taking responsibility. Now he is bowling his full quota of four overs. He is leading the team from the front and has made a habit of scoring consistently with his bat. He always looks to motivate his teammates,” stated the ex-India off-spinner.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who has featured in the IPL as a player and coach, claimed Pandya is relishing the responsibility, which has brought more balance to his game.

“Hardik is now a changed player. As a captain, he is taking the responsibility of leading the team’s middle-order seriously, and scoring heavily. You can see, he is not getting overly aggressive this season, which is a major shift in his batting approach from the previous seasons.”

With Gujarat now having matches against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore left in the league stage, expect Pandya the leader and all-rounder to solidify their top spot in the points table.

IPL 2022: Hopefully, AB de Villiers will be at RCB next year in some capacity, says Virat Kohli

0

Mumbai, May 11 Royal Challengers Bangalore’s senior batter Virat Kohli has dropped a hint over the involvement of former team-mate and ex-South Africa skipper AB de Villiers marking a return to the franchise next year “in some capacity”.

Kohli and de Villiers shared a great bonding while turning out for RCB for almost a decade before the latter announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November last year. De Villiers’ association with RCB began in 2011 after spending three seasons at Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals).

He starred in 157 matches for RCB, scoring 4522 runs at a strike rate of 158.33 and was also the overall second-highest run-scorer for RCB after Kohli.

“I miss him (de Villiers) a lot. I speak to him regularly, quite regularly. He keeps messaging me – he was in the US recently watching Golf – Augusta Masters is what I heard it was called. So, he told me he was there experiencing it with his friends and family. We stay in touch – he is very keenly obviously watching RCB and hopefully here next year in some capacity,” said Kohli in an RCB insider video on Wednesday.

With Kohli stepping down from RCB captaincy after IPL 2021, Faf Du Plessis, another former skipper of South Africa, was made the captain for the ongoing season. Under his leadership, Bangalore is in fourth place in the points table, with 14 points from 12 matches.

“I & Faf have always gotten along really well even before we played together this season because he was the captain of South Africa for a while. Faf is a guy who is very sure of himself, and he has full authority on the field he tells me sometimes I mention things and tells me no I don’t want to do that, which I respect a lot because that obviously makes you gain respect for the person you are playing under,” stated Kohli on du Plessis.

“As I said, we have had mutual respect for many years even before he played for RCB because he was captain of South Africa, and always had some nice conversations – Pre-match, Post-match. Yeah, there was always respect there but now I have gotten to know him much better and he’s a brilliant guy and yes obviously a very good-looking guy,” added Kohli.

IPL 2022 has seen Kohli struggle for scoring runs consistently, making just 216 runs in 12 matches at an average of 19.64 and strike rate of 111.34. It has also seen him bag three ducks, a rare unthinkable phenomenon for someone of Kohli’s stature.

Asked about his ducks in IPL 2022, Kohli jokingly replied, “First-ball ducks. After the second one, I actually realized what It feels like to be like you (Mr. Nags’ character), absolutely helpless. It hasn’t happened to me ever in my career, I think. I have seen everything now. It’s been so long, I have seen everything in this game. The perks of loyalty are way more than the perks of captaincy.”

Mahesh Babu’s ‘Bollywood cannot afford me’ statement sparks debate

0

Hyderabad, May 11 Mahesh Babu recently made a statement at Adivi Sesh’s ‘Major’ trailer launch, which has sparked a debate. When asked about his plans to star in Bollywood films, the actor stated that “Bollywood cannot afford” him.

Despite the fact that the statement has been taken out of context, social media is buzzing with conversations about the same subject.

Mahesh Babu’s fans defend his statement, claiming that he has always given the same response, which is now being exaggerated.

“I may come across as arrogant, but I have received numerous offers in Hindi. However, I believe they cannot afford me. I don’t want to squander any of my time or others. I never considered leaving Telugu cinema or going to other places, because of the fame and love I have here.”

“Why do we have to draw controversy from every other statement by the actors”, another one wrote.

Mumbai, May 11 Producer-actor Jackky Bhagnani has talked about what it is that could be ailing Bollywood cinema currently.

Jackky says: “We need to make good commercial films that resonate with the whole of India. I take the success of the last few films as a great sign of revival of cinema as a mass entertainment medium.”

“All kinds of audiences enjoying one particular film is actually great. The common audience is telling us something and we must listen. It’s not about north or south, it’s about coming up with good quality entertainers.”

With his penchant for mass entertainers, the young producer hopes to bring a renewed and fresh perspective to his content that will emotionally resonate with the mass audience.

Talking about the kind of films he as a producer wants to associate with, Jackky says, “I want to produce content that is universal and appeals to the larger geography and demography. I want to put the effort into improving this genre. Mass universal films don’t mean badly written and lazily produced content that rides primarily on the star pull of the cast.”

“I want to create well-written, well-produced commercial entertainers that have really good music. Action, comedy, drama, and even genres like larger-than-life historical and mythological content. I come from the school of mass entertainment.

“Not so long ago my father and lots of other Bollywood producers were catering to the entire Indian cinema-going audience. Of course, that content needs to evolve and match the expectations of the newer generation of audience. I want to do that. This is my vision.”

Next on Jackky’s plate is the highly-anticipated action entertainer ‘Ganapath’ starring Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon and ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ that brings together two of the biggest action superstars of their generation, Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff for this action-comedy.
