India’s connectivity drive in neighbourhood benefits Nepal, B’desh

0

India has always harped on better connectivity among its neighbouring nations in South Asia, more so with Nepal and Bangladesh. The recent development of better connectivity between India and Nepal was the train service on a 35 km long cross-border rail link between Jayanagar in Bihar and Kurtha in Nepal. This will enable easy connectivity and benefit the people of both the neighbouring countries.

It is a multi-pronged strategy. It is part of India’s NeighbourhoodFirst policy. India in this effort to build connectivity with neighborhoods has built electricity networks, upgrading ports, rail, and airport infrastructure, and laid new pipelines. It is a much more benevolent model than the Chinese one. The Indian model does not put any country into a debt trap.

The first meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Group (IMCG) on Neighbouring Countries at the Secretary level was convened by Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla on April 12. The IMCG has been set up as a high-level mechanism for mainstreaming India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

The meeting deliberated upon and took important decisions on various aspects of India’s bilateral relationship with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the areas of trade and investment, connectivity, border infrastructure, immigration, development cooperation, border security among others.

The IMCG is supported by Inter-Ministerial Joint Task Forces (JTF) convened by the concerned Joint Secretaries in the Ministry of External Affairs. The government of India’s efforts to deliver benefits like greater connectivity, stronger inter-linkages, and greater people-to-people connections under India’s Neighbourhood First policy takes place through a whole-of-government approach with coordination involving various Ministries, Departments, and agencies of GOI and of concerned State governments. The IMCG will further improve institutional coordination across government and provide comprehensive direction to this whole-of-government approach to India’s relations with its neighbouring countries.

According to a news report by All India Radio, new Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) are constructed or expanded to facilitate trade and mobility along the borders with Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar. Inland waterway infrastructure for movement to Nepal and Bangladesh is developed. The number of railway connections with Bangladesh has increased manifold.

India and Nepal have South Asia’s first cross-border oil pipeline. Bhutanese cargo from the Himalayas is reaching Bangladesh on an Indian river vessel. Nepali cargo is transited and clearance processes through India’s eastern seaports. The airport at Jaffna in Northern Sri Lanka is reconnected with a direct flight from south India after upgradation with Indian aid. The ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) launched the South Asian Satellite in 2017, enhancing digital connectivity across the region. In 2019, Bhutan inaugurated a receiving station for the South Asian Satellite. In the same year, Bangladesh agreed to Indian transit access to Northeast states. India and Bangladesh are now directly exchanging freight under a new shipping agreement.

Sri Lanka could have avoided the present crisis had it tied up with India for connectivity and not wholly dependent on China for funds. It is neck-deep in loans from China and it has asked for more funds from China to service previous loans.

Sri Lanka is building its Port City Colombo in line with Dubai and Singapore. The project is estimated to be USD 14 billion and China has invested USD 1.4 billion.

According to a media report, Port City Colombo is a public-private partnership project between the Sri Lankan government and CHEC Port City Colombo Pvt. Ltd, which is a subsidiary of China’s state-run infrastructure firm, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a company that is leading President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at the Plenary Session “Central and South Asia: Connectivity” on July 16, 2021, said: “Economic growth is universally driven by 3Cs: connectivity, commerce, and contacts. All three need to come together to ensure regional cooperation and prosperity. The challenge we face is that politics, vested interests, and instability can be formidable impediments to its realization. There are lessons too from our experiences that need to be understood. The real issues are of mindsets, not disputes. Blocking connectivity in practice while professing support in principle benefits no one. A one-sided view of trade rights and obligations can never work. No serious connectivity can ever be a one-way street.”

Connectivity acquires a particular salience in the context of post-Covid economic recovery. It is itself an economic multiplier. But there is a widespread realization of the need now for more resilient and reliable supply chains. This is not just a matter of production; it is equally a challenge of efficient logistics. All of us need more and multiple options. And this applies to the domain of connectivity most of all.

While expanding connectivity between Central Asia and South Asia, we need to address not just physical infrastructure but all its accompanying facets. Tourism and societal contacts can create a fostering enabling environment. But, at the end of the day, building connectivity is an act of trust and must, at the minimum, conform to international law. Respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity are the most basic principles of international relations.

Connectivity efforts must be based on economic viability and financial responsibility. They should promote economic activity and not create debt burdens. Ecological and environmental standards, as also skill and technology transfers, are musts. Connectivity must be consultative, transparent, and participatory.

IPL 2022: Mumbai are going to be very desperate for their first win, says Quinton de Kock

0

Lucknow Super Giants’ opening batter-wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock feels that his former team Mumbai Indians will be extremely desperate to notch up their first win of IPL 2022.

In the afternoon match at the Brabourne Stadium on Saturday, Mumbai would be seeking to end their winless run while Lucknow is looking to bounce back from a narrow loss to Rajasthan Royals.

“Obviously with Mumbai at the moment, I think we will try to get our momentum back after the loss in the last game. We would love to get another win but Mumbai is going to be very desperate for their first win. I know they will come out hard, knowing their couple of boys in the team and I got a feeling that they will come out fighting, which is expected out of Mumbai. Gotta make sure we dig deep and get our chance to try and get a win on top of it,” said de Kock in a pre-match chat with broadcasters Star Sports.

Lucknow is de Kock’s fifth team in the IPL after previously being a part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai. He has led two of Lucknow’s wins while chasing against Delhi and Chennai Super Kings, making 80 and 61 respectively.

“It’s been good and the team environment is on a high. We have done really well as a new team this season. It’s now just a matter of carrying on with the momentum. We have got a really great squad with a bunch of good guys. It’s about taking on today and getting another win,” stated the 29-year-old.

It is also the first time de Kock is batting alongside KL Rahul in T20 cricket and he had words of appreciation for the Lucknow skipper. “It’s been good (on batting alongside Rahul). It’s pretty relaxed; we don’t talk so much and have just a mutual understanding of each other, which is quite cool. It’s pretty easy; we don’t go too much into things. Just go out there and play the ball with mutual understanding.”

De Kock believes that he will use his past experience as an opening batter to deal with different batting conditions in IPL 2022. “It hasn’t been too bad. In one game, we got a really spicy wicket and in the next game, it’s all flat at the top. The general thing is team batting second has got little bit better conditions.”

“We had come up against (situations) when we bat first and conditions are little bit more tougher, especially with the seamers. It’s a matter of going back to past experiences and play with the pace I can. Same is for KL and rest of the guys. Today is a day game which could play very differently from what I saw in last night’s game which had a bit of movement early on in both innings. Let’s see what happens.”

IPL 2022: De Villiers teaches me small things that helps me a lot, says Dewald Brevis

0

Young Mumbai Indians batter Dewald Brevis revealed that former South Africa captain and flamboyant batter AB de Villiers had been teaching him small things which have been helping him a lot. Brevis, who made 29 in his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders, wowed everyone with a 25-ball 49 despite Mumbai losing to Punjab Kings at Pune.

Many in the cricketing circle have called Brevis ‘Baby AB’ due to resemblances in the batting styles of the youngster and de Villiers, who made a mark for himself in the IPL with his 360-degree game for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Brevis was picked by Mumbai after being the leading run-getter in the Men’s U19 World Cup with 506 runs in six matches at an average of 84.33, including two centuries and three fifties.

“He’s played a big role, it’s a special relationship. He teaches me small things that help me a lot. It’s about my mindset, the way to play the game & tells me to keep it simple with thinking about the game and also with small technical things which he helps me a lot with. Playing with aggression is important but also to just keep calm in certain situations and to now see how next game goes,” said Brevis in a pre-match chat with broadcasters ahead of the match against Lucknow Super Giants.

In the match against Punjab, Brevis had taken apart India leg-spinner Rahul Chahar for four and four consecutive sixes in the ninth over, which included a massive 112 meters six over long-on.

Asked about the same, Brevis remarked, “I really enjoyed it a lot and just try to learn from everyone and try to play fearless out there and play smart cricket. It just happened (against Chahar), I knew my strengths and when I see the ball, they just took over.”

Brevis signed off by saying that sharing the dressing room and learning from legends of the game like Sachin Tendulkar and head coach Mahela Jayawardene has been a dream come true for him. “It’s really a dream come true to learn from all the legends about cricket in the dressing room. There is so much to learn every day, every minute. Now to just learn and to do it than out on the field.”

CSK to bank on Dube, Uthappa to recreate the magic against Gujarat Titans

0

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will hope to carry the spark, which saw them defeat the in-form Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after a string of four losses when they take on Gujarat Titans at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday.

This will be the first game for CSK at this venue and it remains to be seen how the likes of Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa are able to recreate the magic once again. CSK had amassed a mammoth 216/4, thanks to Dube’s unbeaten 95 (46 balls) and Uthappa’s 88 (50 balls) as the four-time IPL champions recorded their first win of the season, by 23 runs on April 12.

All-rounder Dube has scored the most runs for CSK so far this season with 207 runs from five games, while Dwayne Bravo has picked up the most wickets, bagging seven to his name. And if a similar partnership between Dube and Uthappa (they had a 165-run stand in the previous game) blossoms again, it could set CSK on the path to another victory.

Besides, the spin duo of Mahesh Theekshana and Ravindra Jadeja, who had figures of 4/33 and 3/39 against RCB in the 23-run victory, will pose a tough challenge to the Titans, who are leading the points table after four wins from five games.

The MCA pitch has seen an almost even contest between the teams batting first and second. The team batting first has taken three wins while the team chasing has been successful on two occasions. And, with the average first innings score at MCA stadium so far in the tournament around 178, it could be another high-scoring match.

Squads:

Chennai Super Kings:

Ravindra Jadeja (c), Adam Milne, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (wk), Chris Jordan, Subhranshu Senapati, Dwaine Pretorius, Mukesh Choudhary, Tushar Deshpande, Shivam Dube, Dwayne Bravo, Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mitchell Santner, Hari Nishanth, N Jagadeesan, Prashant Solanki, KM Asif, Simarjeet Singh, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Maheesh Theekshana, Bhagath Varma.

Gujarat Titans:

Hardik Pandya (c), Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, Jason Roy, Lockie Ferguson, Abhinav Sadarangani, Rahul Tewatia, Noor Ahmed, Sai Kishore, Vijay Shankar, Jayant Yadav, Dominic Drakes, Darshan Nalkande, Yash Dayal, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan, David Miller, Wriddhiman Saha, Matthew Wade, Varun Aaron, B Sai Sudharshan

Barty’s retirement may have inadvertently cost Tennis Australia millions: Report

0

Former world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty’s decision last month to retire from professional tennis at the peak of her career has reportedly cost Tennis Australia (TA) millions of dollars in telecast money, which it was planning to earn riding on the popularity of the three-time Grand Slam winner.

Barty had the tennis world and her legion of fans in a state of shock last month after the Australian announced her retirement one month shy of her 26th birthday.

Barty won the French Open in 2019, the Wimbledon in 2021, and the Australian Open earlier this year, and her reign of 114 consecutive weeks at No.1 is the fourth-longest streak in the history of the WTA Tour, behind Germany’s Steffi Graf (186 weeks), American stalwart Serena Williams (186) and Czechoslovakian-American great Martina Navratilova (156). Barty’s 121 total weeks as the top-ranked player are No.7 on the all-time list.

A report in foxsports.com.au on Saturday claimed that TA was planning to cash in on Barty’s popularity, “potentially looking at an unprecedented TV rights deal worth up to AUD500 million over five years for the Aussie summer of tennis”.

The report said that Channel 9’s ratings had soared on the back of Barty winning the 2022 Australian Open title and Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal clinching his 21st major to break the tie with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Barty’s Australian Open final against Danielle Collins of the US was reportedly the most-watched women’s final since the current TV rating system began, according to the report.

TA was reportedly looking at a financial bonanza, what with Channel 7 too “interested” in winning back the rights from Channel 9.

The report said that currently, the Australian Open rights are worth AUD60m annually (AUD300m across five years), but ‘The Australian’ had reported in February that figure would go upward when the next deal commences from 2025 because of the high ratings in 2022 and Barty’s exploits on the tennis courts.

But this may not be the case now with Barty calling it a day, the report stated.

Byju’s-owned WhiteHat Jr logs huge Rs 1,690 cr loss in FY21

0

Byju’s-owned online coding platform WhiteHat Jr has posted a massive Rs 1,690 crore loss in the financial year 2021 while generating an operating revenue of Rs 484 crore in the same period.

The company’s balance sheet in its annual financial statements filed with the Registrars of Companies (ROC) shows that operating revenues were Rs 483.9 crore in the financial year 21, compared to Rs 19 crore in FY20.

However, the platform’s losses skyrocketed in FY21 and its expenses reached Rs 2,175 crore — compared to Rs 69.7 crore in FY20.

The coding platform registered Rs 226 crore revenue from the Indian market — 46.7 percent of its total sales globally — while the US market contributed 40.8 percent of its revenues at Rs 197.2 crore.

The platform made Rs 3.36 crore from the sale of course materials and Rs 2.27 crore as other operating revenues during the period.

Byju’s in August 2020 acquired Mumbai-based live online coding provider WhiteHat Jr in an all-cash deal worth $300 million (roughly Rs 2,246 crore).

Karan Bajaj founded WhiteHat Jr in 2018 with a vision of making children creators of technology rather than being passive consumers of it.

In August 2021, Bajaj decided to move on to kick off the next chapter in his life and Trupti Mukker, Head of Customer Experience and Delivery, was appointed to lead the WhiteHat Jr.

WhiteHat Jr is not only a Maths and coding learning platform but also forayed into 1:1 online music classes, and brought a physical-digital blended coding curriculum to Indian schools with an aim to teach 10 lakh students.

Want to provide healthy, competitive environment to players: New Aussie coach McDonald

0

New Australia men’s cricket team head coach Andrew McDonald has said that coaches are appointed to provide a healthy and competitive environment and that he would like to give players the best opportunity to grow and flourish.

McDonald — who had a short stint as interim coach of the Australian men’s team after Justin Langer stepped down weeks before the Pakistan tour — was handed a four-year contract by Cricket Australia (CA), and the 40-year-old former Test player said that he would also like to give assistant coaches in his team to lead on some white-ball assignments.

According to reports, Langer’s position as the coach had become shaky in August last year after players and support staff had made their dislike known of his “volatile micromanagement style”. It was reportedly one of the reasons that CA was willing to give him only a six-month contract renewal, which the 51-year-old rejected and decided to step down.

Several current players, including white-ball skipper Aaron Finch, wanted a coach willing to take a collaborative approach, and McDonald emerged as the frontrunner.

McDonald told sen.com.au that he was ready to take a step back if the players or his assistant coaches had better insight into a certain areas of the game.

“To give players the best opportunity to grow and learn in your environment, I think that’s what a coach is there to do help the players prepare, give them the best options possible and watch them grow as people and players,” said McDonald on SEN 1170 The Run Home.

“I think that’s what success looks like, are you going to get that right all the time? Potentially not, but you can have a crack at it. That’s all I want people to talk about is that they improved in the environments that were created.

“There will be times when assistant coaches take leads in certain white ball tours, that’s definitely in the pipeline. You’re growing the coaches within your staff as well; you’re giving them opportunities to lead and give them different challenges and they feel as though they’ll be moving forward in that environment.

“It’s about improving everyone along the journey.”

Sun storms Mercury with a plasma wave

0

The Sun has spewed a gigantic plasma wave into Mercury.

The plasma wave that stormed Mercury on April 12 is likely to trigger a geomagnetic storm and scour material from the planet’s surface, Live Science reported.

The sun’s activity has been increasing far faster than scientists forecasted.

The powerful eruption, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), was seen emanating from the sun’s far side on the evening of April 11 and took less than a day to strike Mercury which is the closest planet to our star, according to spaceweather.com.

The storm may have created a temporary atmosphere and even added material to Mercury’s comet-like tail, the report said.

The plasma wave came from a sunspot – areas on the outside of the sun where powerful magnetic fields, created by the flow of electric charges, get knotted up before suddenly snapping.

The energy from this snapping process is released in the form of radiation bursts called solar flares or as waves of plasma (CMEs).

On planets that have strong magnetic fields, like Earth, CMEs are absorbed and trigger powerful geomagnetic storms.

But unlike Earth, Mercury doesn’t have a very strong magnetic field.

The atoms that are on Mercury are constantly being lost to space, forming a comet-like tail of ejected material behind the planet.

But the solar wind — the constant stream of charged particles, nuclei of elements such as helium, carbon, nitrogen, neon, and magnesium from the sun — and tidal waves of particles from CMEs constantly replenish Mercury’s tiny quantities of atoms, giving it a fluctuating, thin layer of the atmosphere, Live Science reported.

Previously, scientists were unsure if Mercury’s magnetic field was strong enough to induce geomagnetic storms.

However, two recent studies published in the journals Nature Communications and Science China Technological Sciences in February have proved that the magnetic field is, indeed, strong enough.

The first paper showed that Mercury has a ring current, a doughnut-shaped stream of charged particles flowing around a field line between the planet’s poles, and the second paper pointed to this ring current being capable of triggering geomagnetic storms, the report said.

“The processes are quite similar to here on Earth,” Hui Zhang, a co-author of both studies and a space physics professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, said in a statement. “The main differences are the size of the planet and Mercury has a weak magnetic field and virtually no atmosphere.”

Meanwhile, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center, the Sun’s activity has also been increasing far faster than past official forecasts predicted.

The Sun moves between highs and lows of activity across a roughly 11-year cycle, but because the mechanism that drives this solar cycle isn’t well understood, it’s challenging for scientists to predict its exact length and strength.

BGMI fixes speed glitch, other issues with latest patch

0

Games developer Krafton has launched a new update for Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) bringing fixes for multiple issues that the player base is facing right now.

According to the official patch notes, the new update brings a highly demanded fix for the speed issue after jumping off the Nimbus Island.

This is a bug that allowed players to move way faster than intended after abusing a glitch spot to jump off the nimbus island. Krafton has confirmed that this glitch has indeed been fixed, reports GizmoChina.

The patch also brings a fix for the issue where other players’ sensitivity codes will not get applied.

These codes usually allow players to share their custom sensitivity settings for the camera, aim down sight (ADS), and gyroscope with others.

Other than that, the last gameplay-related patch coming with this update fixes the issue where players were unable to see through the scope when they had the Christmas-themed Merry Tidings skin equipped to their UZI.

In a separately published patch note, Krafton has also stated that it has fixed an issue with a premium crate that gives an unintended item along with guaranteed rewards when opening the crate 10, 20, or 30 times.

If Stokes declines captaincy offer, then Broad should be approached: Hussain

0

Former England skipper Nasser Hussain has said that while Ben Stokes is his first choice to lead the Test side after Joe Root stepped down on Friday if the all-rounder is not keen to don the captaincy mantle, then pace-bowling stalwart Stuart Broad should be considered for the role.

Hussain felt that after Root led the England Test side for five years, it was time for change and Stokes would be the ideal candidate to replace the outgoing captain.

Hussain also said in his column for the Daily Mail on Saturday that Root was a “fantastic ambassador” of the game and had won “more Tests in charge than anyone else in England’s history”.

“He (Root) has carried on scoring runs, too, which has often proved difficult for England captains. As he acknowledged on Friday, the job does take over your life. Joe Root should be proud of how he behaved as England captain but it was time for a change,” opined Hussain.

The former captain pointed out that while it was great that Root had been a prolific run-getter, it was more important to win Tests, which had not been the case of late.

In recent times, Root has shown excellent form with the bat, earning him the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Award in 2021. During his reign, Root amassed 5,295 Test runs including 14 centuries to become England’s most prolific run-scorer as captain. But losses in Tests kept mounting, with England winning just one in the last 17 outings.

“The most important box you have to tick as captain is results, and one win in the last 17 Tests and no wins in the last five series suggests it is time for change. It is time for a new voice and someone else to take the team in a different direction. Those results are not all down to Root. He has had to put up with a batting line-up that has continually failed him, despite various changes in personnel, and one he has had to hold together himself with the bulk of England’s runs.

“Clearly, he has made mistakes. There have been tactical errors on the field and bad decision-making off it, mainly with selection, and in the end that has cost Root the job, whether he jumped or someone tapped him on the shoulder,” said Hussain.

Hussain felt that Root made a huge tactical mistake by not including pace-bowling stalwarts Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad in the touring party for the three-Test Caribbean tour.

“I said as soon as the tour party was selected that Anderson and Broad deserved better than to be treated the way they were, and in my view, their non-selection cost Root another series because they would probably have bowled England to victory in Grenada.”

England lost the Test series to the West Indies 0-1, with the host winning the last game in Grenada.

“Where do England turn now? I would go for Ben Stokes. He is naturally gifted and world-class but he also has a great cricket brain and thinks his way through situations, as he showed both in the 2019 World Cup final and that summer’s Ashes Test at Headingley. And if not Stokes then, on a short-term basis this summer, the principle of picking your best side leads me to Broad. Stuart has a brilliant cricket brain, lots of experience, and is a fighter who wants to win every game he plays in,” opined Hussain.

Eyeing comeback, Sasikala approaches Thevar community leaders

The former interim general secretary of the AIADMK, V.K. Sasikala, who was expelled from the party, has been knocking on all doors for a comeback to the party fold.

However, the stiff resistance from the faction led by former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami seems to be a major obstacle to her entry into the party.

She has, according to sources close to her, met senior functionaries of the “powerful” Thevar community to which she belongs.

As per the sources, the meeting was held at her T Nagar residence and the community elders have promised to pull the strings for her re-entry into the party.

It may be noted that the Thevar community of Tamil Nadu is strong in southern parts of the state and has been voting for the AIADMK. However, in the 2021 Assembly elections, the party lost miserably in its strongholds, and political pundits have opined that the Thevar community had played soft-peddle which had affected the party’s prospects in south Tamil Nadu.

The poster boy of the Thevar community in the state and former Chief Minister, O. Panneerselvam also had to face the ire of the community with the party candidate losing in his home turf Bodinaikar in Theni district during the urban local body polls.

Immediately after the Urban polls, a meeting of AIADMK district office bearers were held at the farm house of Panneerselvam and a resolution was passed for the re-entry of Sasikala. This, according to AIADMK office bearers, was at the behest of the Thevar community.

While Panneerselvam was present in the meeting, he denied having any role in passing the resolution. His brother O. Raja who was the district level office bearer and the Chairman of AIADMK controlled milk cooperative society of Theni was expelled from the party after he met Sasikala immediately after the Theni meeting.

Meanwhile, Sasikala’s plea that expulsion from the AIADMK was not valid according to the party constitution was dismissed by a Chennai court. Following this, former minister D. Jayakumar who is closely associated with Palaniswami immediately called upon Sasikala to accept the court verdict and not to dream of re-entry into the party.

However, sources in the AIADMK told IANS that strong pressure from the Thevar community cannot be overlooked by the party, and the re-entry of Sasikala into the party fold will become a reality in the days to come.

The estranged leader has the support of the powerful Kanchi Sankara Mutt and this has helped her garner support from the RSS, and BJP combine in the state.

R. Padmanabhan, Director, Socio-Economic Development Foundation, a think tank based out of Madurai, while speaking to IANS said, “AIADMK now needs a leader with a presence and Sasikala has that. Being the aide of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, she knows all the tricks of the trade and if someone is willing to join the party why should she be kept out. I think the ground is now suited for her to stage a grand come back”.

The epicenter of the quake which occurred on Friday, with a depth of 65.76 km, was initially determined to be at 22.7811-degrees south latitude and 69.9368-degrees west longitude, Xinhua news agency reported.

Another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1, jolted South Sandwich Islands region on Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 64.7 km, was initially determined to be at 55.9474-degrees south latitude and 27.805-degrees west longitude.

IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians win toss, elect to bowl v Lucknow Super Giants

0

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants in match 26 of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium here on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Sharma confirmed that West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen comes into the playing eleven in place of pacer Basil Thampi, which means Mumbai will be using all four overseas slots for the first time in the competition. “Since it’s a day game we tried to get another slower ball. It’s a good pitch to play cricket and with his experience coming in, it will be good for us.”

Asked about what Mumbai needed to do to break their winless run, Sharma remarked, “We just need to keep things under control and stay calm, it’s that simple. We don’t need to overcomplicate things. We just need to come out and play basic cricket and will be focusing on doing that.”

Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul, who marks his 100th IPL appearance, said top-order batter Manish Pandey replaces off-spin all-rounder K Gowtham in the playing eleven.

“We are playing some good cricket since the first game. It’s a new team and the boys are coming together really well and we always found a way to stay in the game. The vibe has been good since the first game and the energy in the dressing room is positive.”

Deepak Chahar vows to come back stronger from back injury

0

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pace bowler Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out of the entire IPL 2022 season on Friday due to a back injury, has posted an emotional message on social media saying he “really wanted to play” this season but unfortunately has to miss out this time around.

In a massive blow for the Ravindra Jadeja-led defending champions, the 29-year-old picked up a back injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru while rehabilitating from a quadricep injury sustained during the third T20I against West Indies in February.

“Chennai Super Kings bowler Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 owing to a back injury,” the league said in a statement on Friday.

Chahar wrote on Instagram: “Sorry guys, unfortunately, I will be missing out on this season of IPL due to an injury. Really wanted to play but will come back better and stronger as I have always done. Thanks for always supporting me with your love and wishes. Need your blessings. See you soon.”

Chahar was an integral part of CSK’s fourth championship win in IPL 2021, claiming 14 wickets from 15 games at an economy of 8.35. He was the team’s powerplay enforcer with the ball and also an able lower-order hitter, which got the franchise to spend Rs 14 crores to pick him at the mega auction ahead of this season.

The pacer sustained the injury days after the auction and missed the subsequent series against Sri Lanka while rehabilitating at the NCA. The initial assessment by the NCA physios projected that Chahar was set to miss a major chunk of the IPL 2022 and his quick recovery kept CSK hopeful of a return in late April but the back injury setback put an end to all those hopes.

In his absence, CSK has won just one game out of five in the ongoing season. However, the franchise still hasn’t announced Chahar’s replacement for the IPL 2022.

Zverev claims emotional win at Monte Carlo, sets up semifinal with Tsitsipas

In a nail-biting match at the Monte Carlo Country Club, Alexander Zverev of Germany got out his best form in the tie-break of the deciding set as the second seed eliminated Jannik Sinner of Italy 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to reach his second semifinal at Monaco.

The two players produced 10 breaks in total in the marathon match which lasted over three hours.

The German fought back twice from a breakdown in the third set and finally forced the tough battle to a tie-break before the 24-year-old Zverev sew up the win 7-5 after Sinner’s backhand netted.

“It means a lot, definitely, especially with how this year has been going so far for me. I have lost long matches like that, so I’m happy I won this one,” said the emotional Zverev, who roared with delight at the winner.

Storming into the quarterfinals without dropping a set, the world No. 3 has the opportunity to close the gap with Serbian Novak Djokovic and Russian Daniil Medvedev on the ATP rankings, as he will move within 235 points of top-ranked Djokovic if he finishes the week with a title in the opening clay-court Masters of the season.

Zverev had already tasted the victory in Rome and Madrid, meaning that Monte Carlo is the only ATP Masters 1000 tournament on clay court that he has never won.

Next for the German will be defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, who has also survived a three-set thriller to advance.

Under the floodlights on Court Rainier III, the third seed squandered a 5-2 lead in the second set, before clawing back from 0-4 down in the decider to secure the victory 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-4 after two hours and 45 minutes.

“There was a moment in the match where I felt like what I was trying to do out on the court wasn’t really working. I wanted to stay as long as possible in court. I loosened up a little bit and focused on shot after shot … that worked out very well,” said Tsitsipas.

The other semifinal will see a clash between two unseeded players, Djokovic’s conqueror, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain knocked out 10th-seeded Taylor Fritz of the U.S. 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to line up his first semifinal in a masters event with Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who edged Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) to advance.

Govt committed to welfare of unorganised workforce: PM Modi

Bengal bypoll results: Trinamool leads in Ballygunge, Asansol

Counting was underway for the bypolls to the Asansol Lok Sabha and Ballygunge Assembly seats in West Bengal with the Trinamool Congress candidates leading in both constituencies.

After the completion of the third round of counting, Trinamool Congress candidate from Ballygunge and the singer-turned-politician, Babul Supriyo was leading by 4,676 votes.

In the case of Asansol, counting for just one round has been completed at the time the report was filed. Trinamool Congress candidate and actor-turned-politician, Shatrughan Sinha was leading by a little over 6,500 votes over the BJP candidate, Agnimitra Paul

However, the surprise in Ballygunge was the remarkable progress of the CPI-M and Congress candidates and the unprecedented disaster faced by the BJP candidate after the completion of the first three rounds of counting.

In Ballygunge, after the third round of counting, the total votes that went in favor of Supriyo was 9,751 votes. The CPI-M candidate, Saira Shah Halim was in the second position getting 5,075 votes followed by the Congress candidate, Kamruzzaman Chowdhury in the third position getting 2,186 votes. The BJP candidate Keya Ghosh after the third round of counting was in the fourth position getting just 621 votes.

The progress of both CPI-M and Congress this time seems better when compared to the results in the 2021 Assembly elections when the Congress and Left Front had a seat-sharing agreement. Even after that seat-sharing, which the Congress did not contest, the then CPI-M candidate Dr. Fuad Halim got his deposit forfeited by getting a total of just 8,474 votes, which was just 5.61 percent of the total votes polled.

In 2021, BJP’s Loknath Chatterjee was in the second position with 31,226 votes, which was 20.68 percent of the total votes polled. The winner then was Trinamool Congress candidate and former state panchayat minister, Subrata Mukherjee who got 1,06,585 votes, which was 70.60 percent of the total votes polled. Mukherjee died in November last year which necessitated the bypolls in Ballygunge.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Supriyo, as a BJP candidate, defeated Trinamool candidate actress-turned-politician Moon Moon Sen by a massive margin of 1,97,637 votes and also secured a whopping 51.56 percent of the total votes polled. After the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls, Supriyo joined Trinamool Congress and also resigned as the Asansol Lok Sabha member that necessitated the bypolls in Asansol

Situational awareness, flexibility the key to bat at any position, says MI’s Suryakumar

0

Mumbai Indians player Suryakumar Yadav feels that situational awareness is the key to excelling with the bat, adding that he is flexible playing at any position and allows the management to take a call on his batting position.

After mostly batting in the top-order over the past couple of years, Suryakumar, who was retained by the Rohit Sharma-led franchise ahead of the IPL mega auction, has walked in at No. 4 and no.5 for Mumbai Indians in the three games he has played so far, and he felt it was simple for him to adapt.

Mumbai Indians, who are yet to open their account on the IPL points table, failing to find a winning formula in the first five matches of the season, will take on Lucknow Super Giants at the Brabourne Stadium later on Saturday and Suryakumar would be keen to carry forward his good form over the last couple of games to earn the five-time IPL champions the much-needed victory.

Speaking about his changing batting position in the team, Suryakumar said, “It is the management’s call to decide my position. I am flexible to bat at No.3, 4, 5 or 6. I have been playing for a long time; it’s situational for me now. It matters what situation I am batting in, not the position.”

Despite the string of losses for MI, Suryakumar is mighty impressed with the performances of young players such as Dewald Brevis and Tilak Varma, who have played momentum-shifting knocks and have shown the ability to rebuild the innings when needed.

Suryakumar added that the team was in a rebuilding phase post the IPL mega auction and very soon some of these youngsters would start playing match-defining roles.

“You can see how Dewald and Tilak have done. We are building this team for the next few years and down the line, you will see some great players. They have come to one of the best teams because the management is great. I do not need to give them any advice; they have been doing a wonderful job. They are playing in a positive manner, I wish I had some of those shots at that age,” said Suryakumar.

Surya, who joined the team late as he was recovering from a finger injury, said that recovering quickly from injuries and returning to make a mark was all about mental attitude.

“No one likes an injury, your mindset is important at that time, it is a mental game. I talked to a lot of people, including Rohit — who has had finger injuries before. I knew I will be ready when I come back.

“I worked very hard to get that. I mean everyone works hard, but it is about mapping out your journey. I try to simulate match situations during practice, so when I play it becomes easier for me,” he said.

With no wins thus far, the team may feel downbeat but Surya said that there was no letdown in the motivation levels or mindset.

“This has happened before. We are taking things positively, winning or losing is part of the game. It’s about hard work, about the time you spend with coaches and family. There is always self-motivation when playing for MI and everyone is trying their best. We will surely catch up,” he added.
