‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’: Visually impressive despite a passive narrative

Film: ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’ (Running in theatres):Duration: 168 minutes, Director: Prashanth Neel:Cast: Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Srinidhi Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Anant Nag, Prakash Raj, Archana Jois, Ramesh Indira, Ramachandra Raju, Rao Ramesh.

For the uninitiated, K.G.F. stands for the Kolar Gold Fields. This film is a sequel to 2018 released ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’.

With its timeline stretching from 1951 to 1981 and narrated in a non-linear manner, the film takes off from where it left in the first chapter.

Anand Ingalagi, the author of the book El Dorado, suffers a stroke the night after detailing the events in Chapter 1. His son Vijaayendra Ingalagi (Prakash Raj) takes over the narration. He continues to tell us of the rise and fall of Rocky, the kingpin of Kolar Gold Fields who was considered the “Biggest Criminal” by the government of the country, the “Biggest Businessman amongst his peers, and the messiah of the downtrodden at Kolar Gold Fields.

He tells us how Rocky retained his supremacy against his adversaries and government officials while also coming to terms with his past.

The narrative takes us from Kolar to Paali to Varca, to Surat, UAE, Delhi, Banglore, and Bombay and loads us with dramatic dialogues that are amusing.

Mounted as a magnum opus the film begins in a dramatic tone, verbose and loud. Gradually you realize that the telling is its undoing. On-screen the passive narrative makes the film appear like a grand, hyper-active montage laid over a voice-over.

The action sequences along with the high-pitched sound that accompanies the visuals, make you care less for the characters. Also, the fight sequence in the climax seems like an action jamboree where one is not sure, who is fighting whom. Generally, the emotional connection is lost.

On the performance front, Yash displays a variety of emotions, from brutally ruthless and menacing to humane and a bit dumb at times he is good. But, despite his stylish, raw, and rugged look, he lacks the persona of a larger-than-life superhero or an anti-hero.

Sanjay Dutt as Rocky’s opponent Adheera makes a stronger impact with his tattooed visage and braided hairdo, unfortunately, his character is poorly written and thus appears on screen only for the action sequences.

Raveena Tandon, with her intense look, makes the formidable Prime Minister Ramika Sen appear relatable. How she means business while dealing with anti-social elements is intriguing. Unfortunately, she appears in the second half of the film, when the interest in the film wanes away.

Srinidhi Shetty, as Rocky’s love interest and later wife, Reena is sincere in her performance but is short-changed by the poorly written script.

The others in supporting roles seem to befit their characters, and they all essay their roles earnestly.

The film showcases ace technical and production values. But the VFX, at times, lacks luster. The only good thing about this film is Bhuvan Gowda’s cinematography. He captures the picturesque locales and the emotions of the characters with precision. His frames seem like replicas of iconic masterpieces, picture-perfect and poster-worthy.

The film, despite being brilliantly edited by Ujwal Kulkarni does not seem to be seamlessly layered. There are moments where the scenes seem to be abruptly interspersed with blank screens while the audio plays in the background.

Overall, this film may appeal only to the fans of ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’.

S. Korea, US in talks to hold Yoon-Biden summit around May 21

0

South Korea and the US have been in talks to hold a summit between President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol and US President Joe Biden around May 21 in Seoul, a source said Friday.

South Korea has been pushing to have Biden visit before he travels to Japan to attend a Quadrilateral Security Dialogue meeting set to take place around May 24, the source added, Yonhap news agency reported.

If realized, the summit would come just days after Yoon takes office on May 10, making it the earliest-ever South Korea-US summit after a South Korean president’s inauguration.

“Nothing has been confirmed, but I understand the two sides are coordinating schedules,” an official on Yoon’s transition team told Yonhap News Agency.

“During the recent US visit by Yoon’s policy consultation delegation, they expressed their wish for a South Korea-US summit at the earliest possible date as part of President Biden’s visit to Asia,” the official said.

Japanese private broadcaster JNN reported the same day that talks were in their final stages to schedule a Biden visit to South Korea on May 21 ahead of his trip to Japan.

Won Il-hee, the senior deputy spokesperson of the transition team, said he had nothing to confirm regarding a Yoon-Biden summit.

“The date May 21 is also not being discussed or under consideration for now,” he said during a press briefing.

Meanwhile, US Special Representative for North Korea Sung Kim is scheduled to visit Seoul next week for meetings with South Korean government officials.

Won said he is not aware of any planned meetings between Kim and transition team members, though the foreign relations subcommittee is looking into the matter.

Apple criticises Meta for up to 47.5% commission on VR purchases

0

Tech giant Apple has criticized Meta over the “metaverse” company’s plans to charge developers up to 47.5 percent for virtual goods sold through the Meta Quest store.

On Monday, Meta announced it would take an additional 17.5 percent cut from goods sold in “Horizon Worlds” after taking a 30 percent platform fee for being on the Meta Quest Store.

In an email to MarketWatch, Apple Senior Director of Corporate Communications Fred Sainz called the move hypocritical, since Meta has previously criticized Apple’s 30 percent take, reports AppleInsider.

“Meta has repeatedly taken aim at Apple for charging developers a 30 percent commission for in-app purchases in the App Store — and have used small businesses and creators as a scapegoat at every turn,” Sainz was quoted as saying in the email.

“Now — Meta seeks to charge those same creators significantly more than any other platform. [Meta’s] announcement lays bare Meta’s hypocrisy. It goes to show that while they seek to use Apple’s platform for free, they happily take from the creators and small businesses that use their own,” Sainz added.

Facebook, now Meta, has been a loud voice in opposition to Apple’s 30 percent platform fees. It has previously called Apple’s 30 percent cut a hindrance to unlocking opportunities for creators and small businesses.

Meta calls its 47.5 percent rate “competitive” and that it believes “in the other platforms being able to have their share”. However, the rate is much higher than Apple’s 30 percent take and the 2 percent take from certain NFT markets.

“Horizon Worlds” is Meta’s play into the “Metaverse,” a VR platform where people meet up, chat, buy goods, and have customized avatars.

Meta to launch Horizon Worlds social metaverse platform on web

0

Meta (formerly Facebook) is set to launch a web version of its Horizon Worlds social metaverse platform, which is currently available only on the company’s Quest VR headsets.

When Horizon’s web version launches, the platform fee will only be 25 per cent — a much lower rate compared to other similar world-building platforms, Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth said in a tweet late on Thursday.

“25% for Horizon. If the platform underneath it takes a cut the 25% comes after that. So if the platform underneath takes 30% as many do (Apple, Google, Oculus) it comes out to 47.5% total, similar to the Roblox and YouTube rates,” he explained.

It means that for goods sold in Horizon Worlds on a Quest VR device, Meta will take 47.5 percent of each transaction.

Earlier this week, Meta announced it is testing new features in Horizon Worlds, its social VR app, that will help creators sell virtual items and make money.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that creator monetization and metaverse economy is really important.

“We’re making good on our goal to ensure that developers have a path to real financial success on our platform. In its early days, there is still a lot of work to be done and we continue to partner closely with our creators and developers to enable them to earn meaningful revenue,” tweeted Bosworth.

Horizon Worlds was rolled out to Oculus Quest VR headset users in the US and Canada in early December. It reached 300,000 monthly users within no time.

Taking a dig at Apple, Bosworth said that the iPhone maker Apple takes 30 percent of software and a significant margin on their devices.

“They’ve capitalized on their market power to favor their own business interests, which comes at great expense to developers,” he said.

WhatsApp to bring emojis in chats, allow 32 people in group voice call

0

Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced to add emoji reactions directing in its chat app, allow up to 32 people in a single group voice call and increase file sharing to support files up to 2GB, up from the current sharing size of 100MB.

WhatsApp will first allow users to react with six key emoji but will add more going forward so that people can quickly share their opinion without flooding chats with new messages.

“We’re excited to announce that reactions are coming to WhatsApp and with all emojis and skin tones to come,” Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp, said in a tweet late on Thursday.

The company also increased file sharing to support files up to 2 gigabytes so people can easily collaborate on projects.

“We’ll introduce one-tap voice calling for up to 32 people with an all-new design for those times when talking live is better than chatting,” WhatsApp said.

Currently, it allows eight people on a group voice call.

Group admins will also be able to remove errant or problematic messages from everyone’s chats.

“We’ll also support larger file sharing up to 2GB at a time and 32-person group conference calls you can start with just one tap,” said Cathcart.

The new WhatsApp features are rolling out in the coming weeks.

iPhone 14 may come with satellite connectivity for emergencies

0

Tech giant Apple is planning to launch iPhone 14 with satellite connectivity options for emergency scenarios.

According to GizmoChina, through satellite connectivity, users would be able to send text messages or SOS responses via a satellite network to report on accidents, similar to the one on the brand’s smartwatch.

Recently, the tech website reported that the tech giant is possibly working on a similar satellite feature for its Apple Watch.

The primary reason for the inclusion of this system is to allow users to send messages or reach out to emergency services in cases of an actual emergency, the report said.

This system will reportedly include an “Emergency Message via Contacts” for sending short messages in areas that do not have cellular signals.

In other words, it appears that the brand is looking to include this feature in its other products as well.

Interestingly, the iPhone 13 series was also rumored to come with such technology as well, although, this was skipped on the 2021 iPhone.

Border-Gavaskar series has risen in prestige to the Ashes: Nathan Lyon

0

Australian spin stalwart Nathan Lyon feels the Border-Gavaskar series has risen in prestige to the Ashes, adding that beating the sub-continental cricketing giants is becoming a “massive challenge.”

India has had the better of Australia, winning each of the past three Border-Gavaskar Trophy, since 2017, the latest being the 2-1 Test victory Down Under in the four-match series in 2020/21.

“It’s massive. It’s getting very similar to the Ashes series as the pinnacle series for an Australian cricketer,” Lyon was quoted as saying by Code Sports.

“This series with the (World) Test Championship on the line as well it’s going to be even more important and probably a bigger challenge… It’s about doing the basics, not getting too far ahead of ourselves, and enjoying the challenge — I think that’s going to be the biggest one.”

Ahead of two away series Australia is scheduled to play in Asia as a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023, Lyon has recognized the challenges it poses, however still exciting.

“There’s no point hiding behind it,” said Lyon. “That’s one challenge we want to pride ourselves on — going out there and performing really well. This challenge is massive and it’s bloody exciting, to be honest.”

Australia made history in the recently-concluded Test tour of Pakistan under Pat Cummins where they registered their first overseas Test series win since 2016 and first in Asia since 2011. The win in 2011 came against Sri Lanka who they will next face from June 29 for a two-match Test series. However, with all of Australia’s away tours scheduled in Asia, the Pakistan win provides them with renewed confidence.

“We said it was going to be a hard-fought 15 days of cricket, and we were spot on. It was an absolutely incredible challenge for the whole 15 days and we saw the ups and downs of playing Test cricket in the subcontinent and how challenging it is,” Lyon added.

After the first Test of the series was drawn, Australia came close to securing an unassailable lead in the second Test.

Lyon brushed aside the struggles he encountered in the first Test and his self-belief saw him pull off a heist as he snared four wickets in the final innings. Despite his best efforts, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s century efforts saw the hosts hand on to a draw.

“I was pretty disappointed that I wasn’t able to get the win. But also a bit realistic — sometimes you have got to take your hat off and say well played. Babar played an exceptional inning.

“Every time Babar hit a boundary it was like a half-full MCG screaming out and there was only about a quarter of the guys there. They love their cricket over there in Pakistan, but to be able to silence them by taking out Babar was pretty special.”

IPL 2022: Hardik, Ferguson lead Gujarat to 37-run win over Rajasthan

0

Captain Hardik Pandya’s clinical all-around performance and pacer Lockie Ferguson’s superb bowling effort led Gujarat Titans to a convincing 37-run win over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL 2022 match at DY Patil Stadium, here on Thursday.

It was Gujarat’s fourth win of the IPL 2022 season and they climbed to the top of the points table with 8 points.

A sensational unbeaten half-century by Hardik (87 not out off 52) powered Gujarat Titans to 192/4 in 20 overs. Apart from Hardik, Abhinav Manohar (43 off 28) and David Miller (31 not out off 14) also made valuable contributions with the bat for Gujarat.

Chasing a big total, Jos Buttler, who played an attacking knock (54 off 24), gave Rajasthan a flying start. He first smashed Mohammed Shami for three back-to-back boundaries in the very first over and then hit debutant Yash Dayal for two boundaries and a six in the second over.

However, his opening partner Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the last delivery of the same over. The promotion of R Ashwin didn’t prove effective as he was dismissed for a run-a-ball 8.

While the rest of the batters struggled, Buttler raced to his fifty by hitting a few more boundaries. The carnage eventually ended in the last ball of the powerplay when he was undone by a slower delivery from Lockie Ferguson, which crashed onto the stumps. Soon enough, Hardik Pandya ran Sanju Samson out for a run-a-ball 11 with an outstanding pickup and throw from mid-off.

Once Buttler and Samson got out, it was a mountain to climb for Rajasthan. Lowering down the order, Shimron Hetmyer (29), Riyan Parag (18), and James Neesham (17) tried hard but Rajasthan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and was eventually restricted to 155-9 in 20 overs, losing by 37 runs.

Lockie Ferguson (3/23) and Yash Dayal (3/40) picked up three wickets each for Gujarat while Mohammed Shami (1/39) and Hardik Pandya (1/18) also chipped in with one wicket each.

Earlier, invited to bat first, opener Matthew Wade took advantage of some friendly bowling from James Neesham and cracked three fours in the first over. However, in the second over, Wade (12) was run out on the back of a fine throw from Van der Dussen.

Gujarat then slipped to 15/2 as Vijay Shakar (2) also got out cheaply to Kuldeep Sen. It got worse for them when Riyan Parag got rid of inform Shubman Gill (13).

At 54/3 after 6.4 overs, it didn’t look good for Gujarat, but Abhinav and Hardik stitched a vital 86 runs for the fourth wicket and rescued their team. The duo took their time before taking Rajasthan bowlers to cleaners. Manohar launched into inform Yuzvendra Chahal, hammering him for a four and maximum, a lofted inside-out drive over cover as Gujarat crossed the 100-mark in the 13th over.

Thereafter, they took on Kuldeep, hammering him for three boundaries in the 14th over, where Hardik also notched up his fifty. In the next over, Pandya hit two successive sixes off seasoned spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who leaked 16 runs in that over.

With Titans reaching 130/3 in 15 overs, the stage was set for a big total but the partnership was broken as Manohar was caught by Ashwin on Yuzvendra Chahal’s delivery in the 16th over. However, the wicket didn’t affect the Gujarat innings much as new batter Miller and a well set Pandya stitched a quirefire stand of 53 runs off 25 balls and took their team to 192/4 in 20 overs.

Kuldeep Sen (1/51), Yuzvendra Chahal (1/32), and Riyan Parag (1/12) picked one wicket each for Rajasthan.

Brief scores:

Gujarat Titans 192/4 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 87 not out, Abhinav Manohar 43; Riyan Parag 1/12) beat Rajasthan Royals 155-9 in 20 overs ( Jos Buttler 54, Shimron Hetmyer 29; Lockie Ferguson 3/23, Yash Dayal 3/40) by 37 runs

‘And Just Like That’ actor Hari Nef joins Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’

Actor Hari Nef has joined the cast of the feature film adaptation of ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie.

Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, Nef joins a steep bench of supporting actors, including Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell, reports Variety.

Nef is a trailblazing, out trans performer who began as a fashion darling, going on to breakout roles in ‘Assassination Nation, ‘Transparent’ and the streaming adaption of Caroline Kepnes’ novels ‘You’.

Her role is under wraps in the Warner Bros. feature, written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach.

Mattel and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment are producers.

In a 2021 interview with British Vogue, Robbie said that taking on Barbie “comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, Oh, well, maybe I don’t.”

Production began earlier this year in London, with a planned 2023 release. ‘Barbie’ is one of many Mattel properties on the burner for feature adaptation.

Projects based on the Magic 8 Ball, Hot Wheels, ‘Master of the Universe’, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and the throwback dolls Chatty Kathy and Besty Wetsy are all in production or development.

Ranbir-Alia wedding: Ranbir’s neighbours irked at media invasion

The past few days for residents of the Pali Hill area of Mumbai have been quite testing courtesy of the wedding of Bollywood star couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

Ranbir’s neighbors have sent a complaint to the Pali Hill Residents Association (PHRA).

The move-in turn made the PHRA call a senior cop to intervene in the chaos that has gripped the neighborhood as shutterbugs storm to click pictures every time a celebrity approaches the gates of Ranbir’s Vastu residence. As per the source, the residents have said that the mediapersons are “virtually attacking the cars”.

In the process, a few photographers have also injured themselves as Pali Hill is a sloping area and a lot of bylanes have blind curves. Reportedly, the residents of Ranbir’s building had a meeting in the Vastu building’s lobby.

A member of the organizer group that has made the arrangements for the wedding, who was incidentally in Vastu at that instant, was also called to join the meeting. Currently, around 200 media people are standing at different points on the road and they emerge from nowhere whenever a vehicle approaches the wedding venue.

Champions League: Liverpool working hard in chase for quadruple titles, says defender Tsimikas

0

Former Champions Liverpool endured some anxious moments in a 3-3 draw with Portugal’s Benfica but were happy to progress to the semifinals of the Champions League with their Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas saying they will keep fighting for unprecedented quadruple titles.

Liverpool, who had lifted the Carabao Cup (League Cup) in February 2022, set up a semifinal clash with Spain’s Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League while they trail Manchester City by one point in the Premier League standings (74-73) and on Saturday play Man City in the FA Cup semifinals at Wembley.

The Reds’ hopes were alive in all three competitions after they rode on their performance in the first leg to advance past Benefica 6-4 on aggregate after Wednesday night’s clash between the two teams ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Reds scored via Ibrahima Konate (21), Roberto Firmino (55, 65) while Benefica replied through Matias Goncalo Ramos (32), Roman Yaremchuk (73), Darwin Nunez (81) to secure the draw.

Tsimikas, who earned the Player of the Match award against Benfica at Anfield after notching two assists, said wanted to progress with a win.

“Yeah, of course, we wanted to win. In the end, we didn’t win, we drew, but we’re happy. We got through and we have to continue to work hard if we want to achieve our goals,” he told Liverpool’s official website in an interview.

“I’m very, very happy. I’m very happy about the two assists. My hard work pays off. This gives me extra motivation to keep working hard and do exactly that, play for this team. I always enjoy it when I play for this family. I’m very happy,” he added.

Tsimikas said he was happy with his contribution to the team. “It’s always a pleasure when I play for this family. I always try to give my best when they give me the chance. I’m always there for this team, to fight for every place, to do what we can do. I’m very, very happy about that. All the times they give me the chance, I will be there and I will show exactly that,” he said.

He said the team will work hard to really achieve the aim of winning the Champions League.

“Of course, it’s my biggest dream to win the Champions League. It was one of my goals when I came here. I want it really so much. I will work hard with the boys to really achieve this. We deserve it with all the work we do every day. We’ll go for it.”

Though the intensity of the fixtures schedule is terrifying, the left-back said they are working really hard to cope with that.

“Yeah, of course. As we saw today, everybody in this team is ready for that, for every challenge. We train really, really hard and we work very, very hard. We show every game – no matter who is playing – we have the same goals, to win the games, to play, to have the performances, and to win,” he added.

Over 200 Apple suppliers commit to using clean power

0

Apple on Thursday announced that its suppliers have more than doubled their use of clean power over the last year.

The company said in a statement that 213 of its major manufacturing partners have pledged to power all Apple production with renewable electricity across 25 countries.

Over 10 gigawatts of clean power are operational now, out of nearly 16 gigawatts in total commitments in the coming years.

“Clean energy is good for business and good for the planet. By sharing what we learned in our own transition to renewables, we are helping point the way to a greener future,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.

Apple is constantly working with its global supply chain to accelerate and support its transition to clean energy and become carbon neutral across its entire supply chain by 2030.

Apple has been carbon neutral for its global operations since 2020.

“We are proud that so many of our manufacturing partners have joined our urgent work to address the climate crisis by generating more renewable energy around the world,” Jackson added.

In markets where suppliers face particular challenges in accessing cost-effective clean energy, Apple said it works with partners to break down barriers through innovation and policy engagement.

Vijayan in no mood to relent on action against former favourite official

Former Director-General of Police Jacob Thomas got a jolt on Thursday as it appeared that Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan government is in no mood to relent on him, challenging in the Supreme Court the relief that he got from the state High Court which quashed a Vigilance FIR against him in an alleged corruption case.

Thomas was once regarded as the blue-eyed boy of Chief Minister Vijayan and was given the plum post of Director, Vigilance on the same day that Vijayan assumed office in his first stint as Chief Minister in May 2016.

But after a while, relations between the two soured and Jacob was later suspended for violating service rules.

Then came a Vigilance case that was registered against him by his own department stating that Jacob had violated rules and regulations in the purchase of a dredger when he was heading the Ports Department from 2009-to 14.

Though he was reinstated later, he eventually retired from a non-policing job in May 2020, serving as the Managing Director of near defunct state-run Metal Industries Ltd, Shoranur.

Thomas then approached the court against the FIR regarding the dredger purchase and got the relief.

He had joined the BJP in February last year and contested the Assembly elections in April 2021 from the Irinjalakuda, but finished third.
