One terrorist has been killed in an ongoing encounter between terrorists and security forces at Sirhama area in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, police said on Saturday, however, police have clarified that no terrorist has yet been killed in a second encounter which is underway in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

“One local terrorist of proscribed terror outfit LeT killed. Search in progress. Further details shall follow. However, in the encounter at Kulgam, no terrorist has been neutralized yet. Operation going on,” police said.

The firefight between terrorists and security forces at Anantnag took place after a joint team of the police and the security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation on the basis of specific information about the presence of terrorists.

As the security forces zeroed in on the spot where terrorists were hiding they came under a heavy volume of fire that triggered the encounter.

IPL 2022: Shane Bond impressed by Mumbai Indians youngsters Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis

0

Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach Shane Bond on Friday was left impressed by the talent shown by youngsters Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis in IPL 2022. In this edition of the league, Varma and Brevis have made the cricketing world sit up and take notice of their batting talent.

In three matches, Varma has amassed 121 runs at an average of 60.50 and a strike rate of 161.33. The young left-handed batter is in the seventh spot on the Orange Cap list. Brevis, who made heads turn in the Men’s U19 World Cup this year with 506 runs in six matches, sparkled with a cameo of 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders.

“It’s been a great squad to be working with so far, a lot of young talent. And obviously to see someone like Tilak coming in and playing as well as he has is a surprise for everyone — not surprising in terms of his talent, but for someone to fit in so seamlessly and have success as he does, has been brilliant. The same as Dewald. There’s no doubting his talent in the nets. But it’s one thing to have talent, it’s another to transition it, so he made it really nice in the last game,” said Bond in pre-match comments released by the franchise.

Though Bond admitted that Mumbai wears a new look after the mega auction in February, he is excited by young players like Varma and Brewis becoming critical players for the franchise in the future.

“Our squad is obviously different from the previous years. I think, with ten teams, the talent is spread a little bit thinner, so it’s hard to make a judgment on your squad until you look long-term and you give these players opportunities and see some success that we’ve had.”

“The next three-four years, whatever it might be in this auction period is a long time. But we take a great deal of heart from the way those two players, in particular, have started. And there are some other players on the sidelines who are itching for a chance and who would do very well when they get the opportunity.”

With Mumbai itching to break their winless run when they face Royal Challengers Bangalore at MCA Stadium on Saturday, Bond feels that motivating Rohit Sharma and Co is something that he doesn’t need to work on.

“Motivation is not something I need to work on, these guys are all motivated. Every time we play, particularly a game against RCB is always a fun game. So in terms of motivation, that’s a given in this team. One of the things that are also talked about is energy. So motivation, energy, is just expected. That’s what we do, we turn up ready to play. I certainly can’t fault the guys in terms of that.”

Bond signed off by saying that the side will be backing Australia pacer Daniel Sams to come good after being hit for 35 runs by Pat Cummins in Mumbai’s six-wicket loss to Kolkata.

“Daniel is an experienced player and he would admit himself that his own performance hasn’t been up to his own expectations. I know he is disappointed with his performance but that’s the nature of T20. Every player in some part of the season will be disappointed with the performances.”

“It’s a game where it can be mostly hit or miss and he certainly missed a couple of times. But you just get back to work, get back to doing those things which he does well and hopefully get the chance to turn around those performances that he’s had. Whether it’s Daniel or anyone else, our message has always been to stick together, the support for each other is always strong and it is no different in this case.”

0

India’s Amit Panghal, Ananta Chopde, and Sumit made their way into the finals of their respective weight categories while three women boxers signed off with bronze medals at the 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Phuket on Friday.

Manisha (57kg), Pooja (69kg), and Bhagyabati Kachari (75kg) are the three women pugilists who signed off with defeats in their respective semifinal bouts.

The 2018 Asian Games champion Panghal started the day’s proceedings aggressively when he outclassed Vietnam’s Tran van Thao in a one-sided semifinal in the 52kg weight category.

Panghal came up with a brilliant display of counter-attack and swift movement to register a commanding win by unanimous decision, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) informed in a release on Friday.

Chopde came up with a strong show against another boxer from Vietnam, Bui Trong Thai, and notched up an easy 5-0 win in the 54kg category.

In the 75kg semifinals, Sumit faced a tough challenge from Kazakhstan’s Ayatullah Takizhanov and managed to secure a thrilling 4-1 victory.

Later in the day, Pooja and Manisha fought hard but suffered losses by similar margins — 1-4 against Thailand’s Baison Manikon and the 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Italy’s Irma Testa, respectively while Kachari lost to Hergie Bacyadan of the Philippines by 0-5 margin.

With Ashish Kumar (81kg), Monika (48kg), Govind Sahani (48kg), and Varinder Singh (60kg) already entering the finals on Wednesday, seven Indians will now fight for gold medals on Saturday to improve upon their performance in the last edition when they won one gold medal.

Rivals can cause no harm to me: Andhra CM Jagan

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday asserted that his rivals can cause no harm to him as long as he enjoys the mercy of God and the blessings of people.

Addressing a public meeting in Nandyal, he said though the opposition parties and a section of media were creating problems for him, nothing can unsettle and scare him.

“With God’s mercy and your blessings, I, Jagan, have come to this position. As long as I have God’s mercy and your blessings they can do no harm to me,” he told the meeting amid loud cheers.

Referring to the malicious reports carried by a section of the media, he stated that they were unable to see the reforms and thus deliberately took up false campaigning to defame the government.

Jagan Mohan Reddy also slammed the Opposition and a section of the media for drawing controversy over the packaging of peanut chikki, which is being distributed in mid-day meals, and advised them not to be so jealous, as it can be fatal.

He said that the previous government had only spent Rs 500 crore on mid-day meals, while at present healthy, nutritious, and tasty meals are being provided at an expenditure of Rs 1,990 crore.

Asserting that poverty should not deprive a child of pursuing higher education, he credited Rs 1,024 crore into the bank accounts of mothers of 10,68,150 students under the second installment of Jagananna Vasathi Deevena for the academic year 2021-22.

He stated that only education has the power to change the world, and eradicate poverty and backwardness of the society, which is why no child has to be deprived of education. In order to provide quality education for the students and to ease the financial burden on parents, the government has come up with Vidya Deevena reimbursing the college fees and Vasathi Deevena for boarding and hostel fees to the students.

He stated that many revolutionary reforms were brought in the education sector, right from improvising midday meals under Goru Buddha, to revamping infrastructure in schools through Nadu-Nedu, introducing bi-lingual textbooks, and many more. Reiterating that the previous government had neglected the fee reimbursement scheme that was started by his father Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy said that the current government is doing more than promised, fulfilling every need.

Affirming that Vasathi Deevena would benefit nearly 10.68 lakh students in the state, the chief minister said Rs 3,329 crore was spent alone on the scheme since the formation of the YSRCP government and Rs 6,969 crore towards Vidya Deevena, besides clearing pending dues of Rs 1,778 crore of the TDP rule.

He revealed that the Gross Enrolment Ratio in colleges has increased to 35.2 per cent in Andhra Pradesh, registering a growth of 8.64 per cent against the national growth of 3 per cent.

FY22 tax collection exceeds budgetary estimate, rises to over Rs 27 lakh cr

0

Accelerated economic recovery along with enhanced compliance pushed India’s FY22 tax collection to Rs 27.07 lakh crore, almost Rs 5 lakh crore above the Union budget’s estimate of Rs 22.17 lakh crore.

Accordingly, the current tax collection grew by 34 percent over last year’s revenue collection of Rs 20.27 lakh crore, led by a growth of 49 percent indirect taxes and supported by a 20 percent growth in indirect taxes.

“This revenue growth has been propelled by rapid economic recovery after successive waves of Covid, supported by one of the largest immunization programmes of the world run by the government,” the Ministry of Finance said.

“It also signifies a robust recovery in the economy. This was also supplemented with better compliance efforts in taxation. Various efforts were taken by tax administration on direct as well indirect taxes to nudge higher compliance through the use of technology and artificial intelligence.”

Besides, FY22 marked the highest tax-GDP ratio of 11.7 percent, with the direct tax to GDP ratio at 6.1 percent and the indirect tax to GDP ratio at 5.6 percent.

“The tax buoyancy (which is a measure of growth in tax revenues as compared to GDP growth) is at a very healthy figure of 1.9, with 2.8 for direct taxes and 1.1 for indirect taxes. The ratio of direct to indirect taxes recovered from 0.9 in 2020-21 back to 1.1 in 2021-22.”

As per the ministry, the gross corporate taxes during 2021-22 was Rs 8.6 lakh crore against Rs 6.5 lakh crore last year, which shows that the new simplified tax regime with low rates and no exemptions has lived up to its promise. Furthermore, the ministry said that during the year, the income tax department gave refunds of Rs 2.24 lakh crore.

“During the last two years, the effort has been to clear the backlog of refunds to infuse liquidity into the hands of businesses.”

“During the year, 2.4 crore refunds were issued that included 2.01 crore related to the year 2021-22, for which the returns were filed till 31st March 2021.”

Additionally, this has been possible due to the faster processing of returns.

“During 2021-22, 22.4 percent returns were processed on the same day and around 75 percent returns were processed in less than a month time. The average processing time for returns during 2021-22 was 26 days. During the year, 7.14 crore returns were filed as compared to 6.97 crores last year.”

According to the ministry, on the indirect tax front, GST saw “an exemplary growth during 2021-22 despite two waves of Covid-19 pandemic”.

“CGST revenues increased from Rs 4.6 lakh crore last year to Rs 5.9 lakh crore in 2021-22. The average monthly gross GST revenue in 2021-22 was Rs 1.23 lakh crore as compared to Rs 94,734 in 2020-21 and Rs 1.01 lakh crore in 2019-20.”

“This again signifies a robust rebound in the economy. This has been complemented due to various measures taken to improve compliance. This shows that the GST ecosystem has appreciated the invoice-based discipline in GST, which not only benefits GST revenues but also contributes to overall formalization in the economy.”

Additionally, the ministry said that the level of economic recovery can also be seen from the value of e-way bills generated every month, which has improved from Rs 16.9 lakh crore in January 2021 to Rs 25.7 lakh crore in March 2022.

In addition, from 2021-to 22, Customs duty has witnessed a growth rate of 48 percent.

“During the last two years, the government has undertaken comprehensive review and rationalization of the Customs tariff structure through extensive consultations and crowdsourcing and has rationalized various exemptions and simplified the tariff structure.”

“It is expected that the trend of recovery in the economy and tax revenues of the government will continue to grow.”

India to play Derbyshire, Northamptonshire in T20 tour matches on England trip

0

India men’s cricket team is scheduled to play two T20 tour matches on their trip to England in July this year. The two T20 tour matches will be played against Derbyshire and Northamptonshire on July 1 and 3 respectively.

The first T20 tour match between India and Derbyshire at The Ancora County Ground on July 1 is scheduled for a 7 pm local time start (11:30 pm IST).

“The number-one ranked T20 side in the world will continue their ICC Twenty20 World Cup preparations against a Derbyshire side, which includes the likes of Pakistan international, Shan Masood, and former Sri Lanka fast bowler, Suranga Lakmal,” said a statement by Derbyshire on Friday.

For the second T20 tour match against Northamptonshire, it will be hosted at the County Cricket Ground on July 3. “Northamptonshire will welcome India to Wantage road this summer for a one-off T20 tour match. The world’s number 1 ranked T20 side takes on the Steelbacks as they prepare for the series against England in July. Tickets for the fixture on Sunday the 3rd of July will be available in the coming weeks,” said the county side on their official website.

But the T20 tour matches will be clashing with India’s rescheduled fifth Test against England, which is set to be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham from July 1 to 5, meaning that many first-choice players will not be available for the T20 tour matches. The fifth Test will be the final Test from India’s tour of England last year, which was supposed to be held at Old Trafford in Manchester.

But it was postponed on the morning of the match over Covid-19 outbreak fears in the Indian camp. As things stand now, the Test has been rescheduled to be held on India’s white-ball trip to England. At the time of the Test being rescheduled, India was leading the five-match series 2-1.

After the rescheduled Test is done, India will be playing three T20Is and as many ODIs against England. The first T20I will be at the Ageas Oval in Southampton on July 7 followed by the next two matches at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge on July 9 and 10 respectively.

After the T20Is are over, the ODI leg of the series starts from The Oval on July 12, followed by second and third ODIs at Lord’s and Old Trafford on July 14 and 17 respectively. The last time India played white-ball matches in England, they won the T20I series 2-1 before losing the ODI series by the same margin to the Eoin Morgan-led side.

IPL 2022: Rishabh Pant batting at No 3 could be way forward for Delhi, feels Graeme Smith

0

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith feels that Rishabh Pant promoting himself to number three in the batting order may be the path Delhi Capitals should look at in their future matches of IPL 2022.

In their six-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants on Thursday, Pant struggled to get going as he made just eight runs in 19 balls.

Pant finally made a connection with the ball in his innings when he lofted leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi through extra cover on the final ball of 15th over. He then carted pacer Andrew Tye for four and two sixes in the 16th over. But Jason Holder and Avesh Khan tied him down with yorkers and slower balls as Pant ended unbeaten at 39 off 36 balls for Delhi to post a below-par 149/3 in 20 overs.

“Rishabh has got starts in every game, but everyone needs to be patient. The strike rate hasn’t quite happened but everyone needs to be patient. Today DC needed to rebuild after losing a couple of wickets but true, the strong finish never came. They needed to get to a total of 170-180,” Smith was quoted as saying by cricket.com.

Asked whether Delhi should continue with Pant at four, Smith had a different take. “Maybe the way forward is to promote Rishabh. Get him up to No.3 and take the pressure off him and give him more time. Maybe this way he’ll be able to set the tone and not think too much.”

Pant, Delhi’s captain, is yet to notch up big scores in IPL 2022 while his wicketkeeping contemporaries, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Dinesh Karthik have produced impactful performances. Smith, who won the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals, thinks that an indifferent start to Pant’s form in IPL 2022 won’t have any bearing on his spot in the Indian team for Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia later in the year.

“I can’t see Rishabh Pant missing out despite the likes of Samson, DK and Kishan doing well. Ultimately it will come down to combinations. Who gets picked will depend on the conditions, and who they are coming up against. Pant has to be there. You can’t leave out Pant. He is going to play all formats for India for a very long time. He’s going to be a superstar.”

Smith pointed out that apart from Prithvi Shaw’s 61 off 34 balls, no other Delhi batter stepped up to keep a flying start in the power-play going in the middle overs.

“It was a one-man show (Prithvi Shaw). Sarfaraz and Pant had to recover from a couple of quick wickets. But in the end, it was only Prithvi Shaw that dominated the game from a DC perspective. After the powerplay, you thought they were on course for 200, but no one else got going. It was bizarre. Good night for Shaw individually, but Delhi would be disappointed. It was a disappointing batting performance.”

Korea Open 2022: Srikanth, Sindhu enter semifinals

0

Former world champion PV Sindhu and silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the semifinals after winning their respective men’s and women’s singles events at the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022 at the Palma Stadium, here on Friday.

Sindhu, seventh in the badminton rankings, defeated world No 11 Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand 21-10, 21-16 while Srikanth eked out a 21-12, 18-21, 21-12 win against South Korea’s Son Wan Ho in the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 event.

Sindhu, who had also won last month’s Swiss Open final against Busanan Ongbamrungphan, dominated the match from the start and won the first game convincingly.

Despite putting up a better performance in the second game, there was no respite for the Thai shuttler against the two-time Olympic medallist as the Indian ace cruised to victory in 44 minutes. This was Sindhu’s 17th win against Busanan Ongbamrungphan from the 18 times the two shuttlers have faced each other.

Provided there is no upset, the Indian shuttler will likely face world No 4 An Seyoung of South Korea next. PV Sindhu had lost to the South Korean shuttler in the summit clash of last year’s BWF World Tour Finals.

In the men’s singles, Srikanth, world No 12, came into the match having a 4-7 head-to-head record against 78th-ranked Son Wan Ho of South Korea. Former world No 1 Son Wan Ho, who was out of action for the most part of the last two years, lost the match in an hour and two minutes to the sixth seed Indian.

Kidambi Srikanth, also a former world No 1, is slated to face the winner of the match between third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and eighth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the semi-finals.

However, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a narrow 20-22, 21-18, 20-22 defeat against South Korea’s Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seungjae in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles. In the women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy will be up against South Korea’s Eom Hye Won and Bo Ryeong Kim.

Breaking 3-day losing streak, indices rise as RBI keeps rates, stance unchanged

0

After sliding for three consecutive sessions, Indian equity indices settled high on Friday as Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) kept policy rates unchanged, besides retaining an “accommodative” stance.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) retained its key lending rate during the first monetary policy review of FY23.

Accordingly, the MPC of the central bank maintained the repo rate, or short-term lending rate, for commercial banks, at 4 percent.

Sensex settled at 59,447.18 points, up 412.23 points or 0.70 percent, whereas Nifty at 17,784.35 points, up 144.80 points or 0.82 percent.

“Market was cautious during the last 2-3 days ahead of the RBI meeting and its future policy stance. Measures being in-line with market expectations led to a relief rally. The focus has shifted to the Q4 earnings season, which will start next week, initiated by the IT & Banking sector,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.

Yami Gautam: I get my adrenaline rush from doing something different

Actress Yami Gautam, who has been creating waves with her performances in films such as ‘Dasvi’ and ‘A Thursday’, says she has attempted something very different and as an actor, she gets her adrenaline rush from doing that.

Talking about the same Yami shares, “I had a lot of fun playing a Haryanvi cop in the film (‘Dasvi’) and I’m ecstatic about the initial response to my performance. My family, my team, and some friends, who are always honest about their opinions with me watched it a few days ago and I’m glad they strongly connected to my character throughout the film.

“Now, I’m excited to hear what the audiences have to say about it. I’ve attempted something very different and as an actor, I get my adrenaline rush from doing that.”.

Yami has an exciting slate ahead with ‘OMG 2’, ‘Dhoom Dham’, and a few more unannounced projects.

IPL 2022: At the bottom end of table, Mumbai Indians seeks turnaround

0

IPL 2022 marked the start of a new era in the history of the tournament. With two new teams in Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans apart from a mega auction, the eight-team competition was upgraded to 10. After 15 matches, the newbie teams have done well, though it is still early days in the competition.

Mumbai Indians, the five-time winners of the league, have made their usual slow start by losing their first three matches to Delhi Capitals (by four wickets), Rajasthan Royals (by 14 runs), and Kolkata Knight Riders (by five wickets).

But after Kolkata’s Pat Cummins stunned them with a 14-ball fifty, alarm bells may well ring in the camp now that in a 10-team competition, there is very little margin for error.

They did enter playoffs in 2014 after losing the initial five matches and even won the trophy in 2015 after losing the first four matches in the season.

But 2022 seems to be a different one. One could sense from Rohit Sharma’s tone after Cummins’s carnage that he wasn’t in his usual calm and chilled self while speaking to the broadcasters.

In all three matches, Mumbai has put out sparking individual performances but the side hasn’t fired as a collective unit to bag two points in the season.

If in the second half of IPL 2021, where batting performances prevented them from reaching playoffs, it is the bowling in the first three games which has let them down.

With no Jofra Archer, Mumbai’s bowling has been largely dependent on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (three wickets at an economy rate of 8.32) apart from Tymal Mills (six wickets at an economy rate of 9.90) and leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin (four wickets at an economy rate of 7.10).

It is the rest of the bowling line-up comprising Daniel Sams (one wicket at an economy rate of 12.63), Basil Thampi (three wickets at an economy rate of 9.50), and with some occasional chipping in from Kieron Pollard (one wicket at an economy rate of 11.50) which have proved to be the weak links.

Bowling coach Shane Bond feels that bowlers going for big runs in and over is something that has hurt Mumbai’s bowling plans.

“It’s been a real mixed bag from us I suppose from a bowling unit. You look at the last game; the first 10 overs were fantastic. We had a couple of overs that got away from us.

“It’s been a little bit of a pattern for us, that we’ve done some really good stuff, we’ve taken out a number of the big players exactly how we thought we would. But when the game’s been in the balance, we’ve gone for some overs of 20-plus. And when you go for overs of 20-plus, then you end up losing matches.”

In the opening game against Delhi Capitals, Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel took 15 runs off Bumrah in the 16th over, 13 runs off Thampi’s last over and 24 runs off Sams in the 18th over.

In their second match against Rajasthan Royals, Thampi was smashed for 26 runs by Jos Buttler in the fourth over of the first innings.

Ashwin was hit for 21 runs in the 11th over while Pollard conceded 26 runs in the 17th over. In their match against Kolkata, Mills and Bumrah conceded 14 and 12 runs twice while Sams was carted for 35 runs by Cummins.

In their batting, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Dewald Brevis (in one appearance) have shown a good show. But with no Quinton de Kock and Pandya brothers in the mix, captain Sharma has to step up with the bat.

Scores of 41, 10, and 3 don’t do justice to Sharma’s famed match-changing skills with the bat.

“All three games that we’ve played, we’ve done some really good things. It’s just that those little moments, and that indication, you know an individual has to understand, in that period of time when the game is happening. There will be an indication that ‘this is the over’. What we do in that over, those little, little things — that we need to try and squeeze that, and get it towards our side. Get that momentum towards our side,” were Sharma’s encouraging words in the dressing room.

If Mumbai takes Sharma’s words of seizing the little moments in the game seriously, then they might find the path which would take them out of their bowling issues as well as the skipper to find runs consistently.

With matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants lined up, Mumbai can’t afford to have any more slip-ups now.

Prashanth Neel clarifies ‘Salaar’ is a fresh story, ending all speculation

Prabhas’s next film ‘Salaar’ is one of the most-anticipated movies.

Director Prashanth Neel, who has been busy with the ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ release, has clarified a few things related to ‘Salaar’, ending multiple rumors around the movie’s story.

A lot of rumors about ‘Salaar’ being the continuation of the ‘KGF’ franchise are making rounds on the Internet. Also, there are other stories run by some websites that ‘Salaar’ is a remake of Prashant Neel’s directorial debut ‘Ugramm’, which is a Kannada movie.

Trashing all the rumors about Prabhas’s much-anticipated upcoming movie ‘Salaar’, the director stated, “All of the films that I make will have some shades of Ugramm. That’s my style! But Salazar is a fresh story. It’s not a remake or adaptation of Ugramm.”

This clarifies that ‘Salaar’ is an original story and doesn’t belong to any other franchise. Prabhas will be seen in a dynamic role in ‘Salaar’, while Sruthi Haasan will play the female lead. It is reported that 30 percent of shooting for ‘Salaar’ has been wrapped up already.

Twitter testing new feature to let users ‘unmention’ themselves

Micro-blogging site Twitter said it is testing a new way for users to remove themselves from conversations they do not want to be a part of.

The company said that the experimental feature is currently available on the Web for some of the users.

“We are experimenting with Unmentioning, a way to help you protect your peace and remove yourself from conversations, available on the Web for some of you now,” the company wrote on its platform.

The micro-blogging platform has likely tested or deployed several features to keep mentions civil, including an anti-harassment Safety Mode.

Recently, Twitter announced that it is working to allow users to edit their tweets after posting them to fix typos and errors.

The company said that it plans to begin testing the feature with Twitter Blue subscribers in “the coming months”.

The news came as Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk acquired a 9.2 percent stake for $3 billion in the company.

New Google AI system to show updated business hours on Maps

To help companies keep up with the fast pace of change, Google has developed a machine learning model that automatically identifies if business hours are likely wrong and then instantly updates them with AI-generated predictions.

Over the past few years, businesses have experienced a lot of change — including constantly updating operating hours based on changing pandemic-related restrictions.

“With the new AI-first approach, we’re on track to update the hours for over 20 million businesses around the globe in the next six months — helping you know exactly when your favorite store, restaurant, or cafe is open for business,” said Google.

The company is also enlisting the help of the Google Maps community — including Local Guides and even the business owners themselves through their Google Business Profile — to verify the information it predicted.

“We’re also experimenting with ways we can use imagery to make updates to other helpful information,” it said in a statement.

For instance, starting in the US, Google is launching a third-party imagery pilot to let people see the most up-to-date speed limit information in their towns.

Over time, this technology will bring more details to the map that can help make your drives safer and more efficient — like where potholes and school zones are or where new construction is happening.

“AI, imagery, and Duplex technology will continue to play a critical role in helping make Google Maps the most comprehensive and useful map possible,” said Google.
