Loss of pet triggers mental health issues in kids: Study

0

Researchers have found that the death of a family pet can trigger a sense of grief in children that is profound and prolonged and can potentially lead to subsequent mental health issues.

The study, published in the journal European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, found that the strong emotional attachment of youngsters to pets might result in measurable psychological distress.

According to the researchers, it can serve as an indicator of depression in children and adolescents for as long as three years or more after the loss of a beloved pet.

“One of the first major losses a child will encounter is likely to be the death of a pet, and the impact can be traumatic, especially when that pet feels like a member of the family,” said study author Katherine Crawford from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the US.

“We found this experience of pet death is often associated with elevated mental health symptoms in children, and that parents and physicians need to recognize and take those symptoms seriously, not simply brush them off,” Crawford added.

The researchers reported the bonds that children form with pets can resemble secure human relationships in terms of providing affection, protection, and reassurance.

Previous studies have shown that children often turn to pets for comfort and to voice their fears and emotional experiences.

While the increased empathy, self-esteem, and social competence that often flow from this interaction is clearly beneficial, the downside is the exposure of children to the death of a pet occurs with 63 per cent of children with pets during their first seven years of life.

Their analysis is based on a sample of 6,260 children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), in Bristol, England.

This population-based sample is replete with data collected from mothers and children that enabled researchers to track the experience of pet ownership and pet loss from a child’s early age up to eight years.

“Thanks to this cohort, we were able to analyze the mental and emotional health of children after examining their experiences with pet death over an extended period,” said researcher Erin Dunn.

“And we observed that the association between exposure to a pet’s death and psychopathology symptoms in childhood occurred regardless of the child’s socioeconomic status or hardships they had already endured in their young lives,” Dunn noted.

SmarterEd gets 11k teachers, 15k students in 4 months

0

Global PC market leader Lenovo’s SmarterEd — free online education platform on Friday revealed that it has secured over 11,000 volunteer teachers and nearly 15,000 student registrations in its first four months.

In April, Lenovo launched its platform in collaboration with eVidyaloka, a non-profit organisation (NGO), which allows students from classes V to XII to choose their teachers, select the subject they would like to learn, and take out time to learn as per their convenience.

The SmarterEd platform was designed by Lenovo for one-on-one online learning sessions, taking into account the respective teaching and learning styles of learners and instructors.

The registrations were not geographically limited, which allowed individuals from 654 cities to teach voluntarily, and students from 571 different cities to learn, with the majority from Delhi.

“We are delighted to see thousands of learners and teachers accessing the platform for better education,” Amit Doshi – Chief Marketing Officer, Lenovo India said in a statement.

“We had launched the SmarterEd platform to assist students during the national lockdown in April when schools across the country had been forced to suspend classes,” Doshi added.

The platform offers links to NCERT and State syllabus e-books and allows learners from classes V to XII to register.

In the last three months, the maximum number of registered students (5,000 plus) were from class XII, the platform said.

While learners and volunteer teachers had the option to choose from multiple Indian languages, the most preferred language for communication was English, followed by Hindi.

Ayushmann is UNICEF India advocate to end violence against children

Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana has been roped in by UNICEF India as a celebrity advocate who will work at ending violence against children.

Ayushmann will be promoting rights #ForEveryChild. He says he is concerned about all children who never get to experience a safe childhood.

“I am very pleased to partner with UNICEF as a celebrity advocate. I believe that everyone deserves the best start in life. As I watch my children play in the safety and happiness of our home, I think about all the children who never get to experience a safe childhood and grow up with violence at home or outside, “Ayushmann said.

The actor says he looks forward to supporting the rights of the most vulnerable children, so that they grow up as happier, healthier, and educated citizens amid nurturing environments that are free from violence.

Welcoming Ayushman as a celebrity advocate for children’s rights, Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque, UNICEF representative in India, said: “I am delighted to welcome Ayushmann Khurrana as a UNICEF celebrity advocate. He is an actor who challenges the boundary of every role he plays and will bring sensitivity, passion, and a powerful voice for every child. Ayushmann joins us to support efforts towards ending violence against children.”

Haque added: “His support will help increase awareness about this important issue, especially now with Covid-19 heightening the risk of violence and abuse against children due to the extended lockdown and the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic.”

Draw against Qatar ‘evolution for Indian football’, says Thapa

0

Anirudh Thapa, one of the mainstays in the midfield of the Indian football team, described their last year’s 0-0 draw against Asian Champions Qatar in a FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying match as an “evolution” for Indian football.

“After fifty years, this match might be labeled as the evolution of Indian football when Indian football was still developing. Stakes were high and no one expected much from us. Our performances were going unnoticed and uncovered. But holding the Asian champions at their backyard was a turnaround for Indian football,” Thapa averred in a live chat on AIFF TV.

“The result sent shock waves in the stadium after the final whistle,” he added.

“Qatari players were respectful, but honestly they didn’t expect us to do something which we actually did. They were shocked,” Thapa maintained.

“They gave everything on the field. They tried their level-best to breach our defense but couldn’t,” he explained. “No other team was able to do what we did at their home ground. We didn’t commit any mistake and give them a chance to hurt (us). It was a memorable night for all of us.”

“No Asian team has defeated or drawn against them and obviously they went to play the Copa America to play against teams such as Argentina, Colombia, and Paraguay. We had a very good result and it was a very memorable day.”

“Xavi (Hernandez) had come to watch the match and he was shocked too. His reaction was pretty much similar to the Qatari players,” the ex-AIFF Academy cadet recalled. “We gave us all into that performance — defending, passing — everything was on point.”

Qatar is currently the Asian Champions when they beat Japan 3-1 in the final of AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 to lift their maiden continental championship in February 2019.

Job losses weighing heavy on expats’ minds: Official

The thought of returning home from abroad after losing jobs amid the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a key concern for Indian expatriates, said Shubham Singh, Protector of Emigrants for Karnataka and Goa region.

“The major issues faced by emigrants during the pandemic relate to job losses, often because their employers have shut down businesses, and safe return to India. These are primary concerns of a large number of emigrants,” Singh told IANS.

“In most cases, their employers and recruitment agencies aid and assist affected individuals to return to India. In some cases, if the recruitment agency refuses to do so, we can step in and ensure that the agencies do the needful. We work along with the Embassies concerned to facilitate their safe return to India if they so wish,” he said.

The POE functions under the Emigration Act, 1983, with an objective to protect the interest of and aid and advice Indian emigrants going abroad or presently working abroad, and is also responsible for granting emigration clearance to prospective emigrants as per the procedure.

Singh said that one of the mandates of his agency was to track down and probe illegal overseas recruitment agencies, which dupe aspiring emigrants seeking green pastures abroad.

And Goa, the top official said, also had its share of unregistered agents, many of whom are under investigation.

“There are eight registered recruitment agencies in Goa. We are presently investigating complaints received against 32 unregistered agencies and individuals in Goa,” Singh said.

“In my experience working as Protector of Emigrants, the common cases of fraud are related to payments made by candidates to overseas recruitment agencies but failed to receive any job offers. Or instances wherein a specific job position or salary was promised by the recruitment agency, but a candidate learns on arrival at his or her overseas destination that the job profile or salary is not as promised,” he said.

Goa Director General of Police Mukesh Kumar Meena, Singh said, had assured to work closely with the POE to track down fraud agents in the state.

Goa has a large ex-pat population working mainly in the oil-rich Middle East as well as onboard cruise liners, he said while adding that there has been a line of outreach for emigrants headed for or residing in that region.

“We advise people that they should be aware of local laws of the land where they are looking to seek employment. They should also acquaint themselves and be aware of their rights as Indian citizens and that they can approach the offices of the POE for any grievances they may have which will be taken up with the offices concerned,” he said.

WB woman police officer, 2 others killed in road accident

A West Bengal woman police officer, her driver, and security guard were killed when the official vehicle they were traveling in rammed a stationary truck loaded with sand on the National Highway-2 on Friday morning.

Armed Battalion Commandant Deboshree Chatterjee, her bodyguard Tapas Burman, and driver Manoj Saha were killed on the spot on the Durgapur Expressway near the Dadpur police station area in Hooghly district.

The trio was taken to Imambara Hospital in Chinsura, where they were declared brought dead.

According to eyewitnesses, the official vehicle’s driver was allegedly speeding when it hit the truck. Officials of Hooghly district police said the driver may have lost control after dozing off on the wheel.

Chatterjee was returning to Kolkata from Siliguri by road. She started her return journey on Thursday night after visiting an armed battalion unit there. She was a resident Parnashree area in Kolkata’s Behala.

Police said Hooghly Superintendent of Police Tathagata Basu visited the Imambara Hospital at Chinsura after hearing about the accident.

Chatterjee, who joined the West Bengal Police as a Sub-Inspector, served in various positions of the Kolkata Police, including in women’s grievance cell, cybercrime, immoral trafficking wing, etc during her 32-year-long service.

Engage in critical thinking, Modi advises students

0

Emphasizing on the need to impart learning in a language that a student understands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asked students to engage in critical thinking and study new things.

The Prime Minister said that the new ‘mantra’ for new-age learning is ‘Engage, Explore, Experience, Express, and Excel’.

He was speaking at a two-day conclave on ‘School Education in 21st Century’ under the new National Education policy 2020.

“We have to take students forward in the 21st century with skills of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, curiosity, and communication.”

He emphasised that a subject’s study should be undertaken in a language a student understands easily. That was the reason why many countries impart primary education in the children’s mother tongue.

“Education up to Class 5 should be in one’s mother tongue only, but it does not mean that no other languages can be taught,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that a mark sheet had become a “mental pressure sheet” for the children, and the NEP 2020 aimed to remove this pressure. Also, teachers will have to learn and also unlearn many things under the new NEP, he added.

He said that in a week’s time, the Union government had got around 15 lakh feedbacks on how to implement the new education policy.

The Prime Minister expressed happiness about the enthusiasm of students and asked them to develop mathematical and scientific skills, especially in the field of robotics and data sciences as future learning will depend more on Artificial Intelligence.

He said that the new education policy is the new hope for the future while the previous policy was based on exam marks and to certain streams. However, the new NEP will focus on learning, he added.

NASA wants to buy Moon resources mined by private firms

0

NASA is looking for private companies from around the world that can grab lunar dirt and rocks, setting off the process of creating a new marketplace for space resources.

Outlining its goal, the US space agency has said that it aims to complete the retrieval and transfer of ownership of the resources before 2024.

NASA has set the goal of landing the first American woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024.

And it is not just one company that the US space agency is looking to purchase lunar resources from.

“The solicitation creates a full and open competition, not limited to US companies, and the agency may make one or more awards,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

As per the requirements outlined by NASA, a company will collect a small amount of Moon “dirt” or rocks from any location on the lunar surface, provide imagery to the agency of the collection and the collected material, along with data that identifies the collection location.

They will then have to conduct an “in-place” transfer of ownership of the lunar regolith or rocks to NASA.

After ownership transfer, the collected material will become the sole property of NASA for its use.

“NASA’s payment is exclusively for the lunar regolith, with any awardee receiving 10 percent at the award, 10 percent upon launch, and the remaining 80 percent upon successful completion,” Bridenstine said, adding that the agency will determine retrieval methods for the transferred lunar regolith at a later date.

According to a report in The Verge, NASA is ready to pay between $15,000 and $25,000 for the resources.

The amount appears to be quite meager considering the cost required to send a spacecraft to the Moon, but the idea here is to start the process of creating a lunar marketplace, said the report.

The industry group Commercial Spaceflight Federation has welcomed NASA’s decision.

“We applaud @NASA’s announcement to buy extracted lunar resources from commercial as another step towards a sustainable return to the Moon,” the federation said in a tweet on Thursday.

The NASA Administrator said that when considering such proposals to buy lunar resources from private companies, the agency will require that “all actions be taken in a transparent fashion, in full compliance with the Registration Convention, Article II and other provisions of the Outer Space Treaty, and all of our other international obligations.”

“We are putting our policies into practice to fuel a new era of exploration and discovery that will benefit all of humanity,” Bridenstine said.

‘China-India ministers meet mark substantial step in cooling border issue’

0

The joint statement and five-point consensus reached by both Chinese and Indian foreign ministers in Moscow marked a substantial step in cooling down the current border situation, exceeding the expectations of most international observers, Chinese mouthpiece Global Times reported.

The report said the meeting creating favorable conditions for a possible future meeting between the leaders of the two countries, Chinese experts told the Global Times on Friday.

“The successful implementation of the joint statement, however, depends on whether the Indian side can truly keep its word. Given the country’s history, it is possible that the joint statement will end up as merely “paper talk” they warned,” the report said.

In the five-point consensus, Wang and Jaishankar agreed that China and India should follow the guidance of the consensus reached between leaders of the two countries, including that divergence should not be escalated into conflicts. The current conflicts in border areas do not serve the interests of either side. The border troops of the two countries should continue their current dialogue, disengage as soon as possible, maintain necessary distances and ease the current tensions.

Qian Feng, director of the research department of the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University in Beijing, told the Global Times on Friday that the joint statement showed that under the current situation, the highest levels of the two governments are unwilling to further escalate conflicts as the de-escalation of tensions will be conducive to the two countries’ interests.

Qian noted that the five-point consensus – the short and concise agreement by the two counties – plans the direction for the next phase of discussions.

“The consensus involves maintaining communication through meetings by the Special Representatives of India and China and expediting the completion of new measures to build mutual trust, marking an important step since the conflicts first took place,” he added.

However, Chinese experts continue to allege that given India’s past history of breaking consensuses reached such meetings, and stressed that it’s still too early to pin high hopes on its implementation, Global Times said.

While the joint press release looks fine on paper, the actual addressing of future border tensions remains unclear as India has a long history of breaking its promises, Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Institute of International Relations of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Friday.

“We should not only observe what India says, but also what it does. For a country like India, the most important thing is how it acts,” Hu said.

In 2005, then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held important talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh before signing a joint statement by the two governments, in which both sides declared the establishment of a strategic partnership to promote peace and prosperity. The two governments also signed the Agreement on the Political Guiding Principles for Resolving the Boundary Issue between China and India, in which they pledged to reduce armed forces and maintain peace.

Chinese experts are blaming PM Modi for the standoff. “However, since odi assumed power, the Indian government has totally neglected this joint statement. China has kept its word, but the Indian side has provoked the recent border clashes,” Hu told the Global Times, stressing that this time China remains on high alert.

“Given the country’s sluggish economy and poor epidemic control, the Modi government will continue to try and stir up border tensions in an attempt to deflect the public’s attention. Sadly, these border tensions are used as chips to fool the public,” he noted as per Global times

Analysts said that the agreement reached this time is also largely due to strong support from the Chinese military. The logistics support could guarantee PLA soldiers an advantage in potential military conflicts when the winter comes, and analysts said that the advanced equipment shown by the Chinese military overshadows that held by its Indian counterparts.

“Only a strong military can wake up a sleepy India, words are not enough,” Hu said.

Qian said that peacefully resolving the border conflicts is important for India, as it would mean the government can then focus on addressing the country’s other problems, which would bring real benefits for the people.

He noted that as nationalism prevails in India, it becomes a true test of Indian top politicians’ wisdom to not be misdirected. The Indian government should have the ability to restrain and prevent radical military action, as per Global Times.

We certainly have the talent to win a medal in Tokyo, says Lilima

0

Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Lilima Minz has been one of the key members of the national side in the last few years. With over 150 international caps under her belt, Minz’s rich streak of experience will be a huge advantage for the Indian team at the Olympics next year.

The team has improved leaps and bounds since Minz made her debut in 2013. The national side has competed terrifically against the top sides in the world in the last few years and the Indian team players have developed a belief that they can go on to make history in Tokyo.

“We certainly have the talent to win a medal in Tokyo. Our team has seen a steady rise since I first joined the team in 2013. I think earlier, we lacked belief in ourselves, but now, we are ready to compete against any top side in the world,” said Lilima.

The 26-year-old first started off as a forward and then later moved to become a midfielder. Minz explained the reason behind the move from being in the forward line to the midfield region.

“When I had first started playing hockey, we played in a system where we had five forwards in a team and I played as one of the wingers. Later our coach decided to move me to the midfield region because I had the stamina and endurance to go up and down constantly.

“It has been very interesting to be a midfielder because we support the forwards and defenders during matches. If we are attacking then we try to push the ball forward as much as possible and if our opponents have the momentum then we lend our support to the defenders accordingly,” said the hockey player from Odisha.

When asked about how she started her journey in hockey, the midfielder expressed that going for the Rourkela Panposh Sports Hostel trials changed her life.

“When I was in school, the Rourkela Panposh Sports Hostel had held trials for hockey players. Those who knew about the trials, they went for it, but since I didn’t know about the trials, I was on my way out of my school,” said Minz.

“When I was leaving, the coach who had come to conduct the trials called me and asked me to join the selection process. I took part in the trials and got selected to practice at the Rourkela Panposh Sports Hostel.

“After learning the techniques at the hostel and practicing there for five-six years, I eventually made to the junior national camp in 2011. Therefore, going for the Rourkela Panposh Sports Hostel trials changed my life,” she added.

ISRO expected to restart satellite launches in Nov, says Kleos Space

0

The Luxembourg-based Kleos Space, a space-powered Radio Frequency Reconnaissance data-as-a-service (DaaS) company on Friday said its Kleos Scouting Mission satellites are expected to be launched during the first half of November 2020 by Indian rocket PSLV.

“The Company has been informed (by NSIL via Spaceflight Inc.) that the launch of the four Kleos satellites planned onboard PSLV-C49 mission is being targeted during the 1st half of November 2020, based on the current status of planning of activities. This schedule is subject to change due to operational circumstances beyond NSIL control,” Kleos Space said.

“The rocket launch is done by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). We are facilitating commercial launches,” G. Narayanan, Chairman, and Managing Director, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) told IANS.

The NSIL is a commercial space company under the Department of Space (DOS).

According to Narayanan, the actual launch date of the rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C49) will be finalized ISRO.

Kleos said it is launching the scouting satellites under a rideshare contract with Spaceflight Inc, with the launch managed by NSIL.

The Kleos Scouting Mission’s four satellites have been mission-ready since the middle of 2019 and were shipped to the launch site (Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh) during February, anticipating the launch during March.

Delay to the launch from March has been due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation, Kleos said.

“In due course, NSIL via Spaceflight Inc. will confirm the exact launch date once the activities at the launch base progress successfully,” Kleos said.

Mumbai Indians eye ‘five-star’ show in IPL 13

0

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin from September 19, the question that fans of Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the 12-year history of the tournament, will have could be: Will Rohit Sharma’s make it five?

Mumbai Indians enter the world’s most lucrative tournament as the defending champions as the 13th edition begins on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Under the brilliant leadership of Sharma, Mumbai has won trophies in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Can they make it five in the UAE? Well, on paper, they look among the favorites, if not the favourite. Last year, Mumbai clinched their fourth IPL title with a thrilling one-run win over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They will look to win consecutive crowns for the first time in the IPL history.

The Sharma-led team is currently training in Dubai and they will take on Chennai in the opener at the beautiful Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Strengths:

Mumbai has one of the best top-order batting line-ups. This year, Australian Chris Lynn has been inducted into the team and he can fire at the top, possibly partnering South African wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. And with Sharma coming in at No.3, the Mumbai top-order could prove to any bowling attack’s nightmare. MI’s all-rounders are also the most important contributing factor to their strength. In Pandya brothers — Hardik and Krunal– and Kieron Pollard, Sharma can include the three world-class all-rounders in the XI, depending on the situation. On the other hand, Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was MI’s most expensive buy in the previous IPL auction, along with West Indian Sherfane Rutherford, who was traded in, are quality back-ups even if they don’t make the playing XI in all games.

Weaknesses:

Mumbai doesn’t have good spin bowlers. Rahul Chahar and Krunal are expected to be the only two spinners who could get into the XI, but both are run-saving rather than wicket-taking options. The team’s options on the bench are Jayant Yadav and Anukul Roy. The absence of Lasith Malinga, the leading wicket-taker in IPL history, may also put more pressure on Jasprit Bumrah to deliver in the hot and humid UAE. The team management has replaced Malinga with Aussie quick James Pattinson. It will be interesting to see how James Pattinson fits in.

Mumbai Indians squad: Rohit Sharma (captain), Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Anmolpreet Singh, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Mohsin Khan, Prince Balwant Rai Singh, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock (wicket-keeper), Aditya Tare, James Pattinson

Gujarat govt announces its first heritage tourism policy

0

Opening up ancient palaces, forts, and other heritage monuments for international and national visitors to boost the tourism sector, the Gujarat government on Friday announced the state’s first heritage tourism policy.

The new policy, which will provide an opportunity for the tourists to enjoy and experience a stay in the historical monuments of the state, is also expected to boost the local employment and the state tourism industry.

The Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani announced the state’s first heritage tourism policy, which was given the final touch during the high-level meeting held earlier Friday. According to the policy, historical monuments, palaces, forts, and structures constructed before January 1950 in the state, could be converted into hotels, heritage museums, banquet halls, and heritage restaurants.

The policy is believed to not only provide the tourists with an experience of staying at the ancient historical and heritage sites and monuments, but it will also open up a new window for job opportunities for the local people. The policy also envisages the utilization of unused ancient and heritage structures while adding attraction in Gujarat tourism.

The state government will provide aid of Rs 5 to 10 crores to new or existing heritage hotels for renovation and expansion. According to the policy provisions, the developers will be provided aid of Rs 45 lakh to Rs one crore, to start new or restore an existing heritage museum, heritage banquet hall, and heritage restaurant. The restoration or expansion work should be done without altering or damaging the existing original structure.

The state government believes that the new policy will place Gujarat on the world heritage tourism map where international tourists will not only be able to enjoy at the sites like Rani ki Vaav, Champaner or Ahmedabad walled city, all world heritage sites, but also enjoy a stay at ancient palaces, forts owned by Kings and other ancient monuments. This move will develop the tourism sector in Gujarat and add up in resource building of earning foreign currency.

Gujarat is a state rich with many ancient city ruins, palaces, forts, tombs, beautiful stepwells, and temples. It is also home to the archaeological sites of the Indus Valley Civilization like Lothal, sacred summits of Jainism, Buddhism, and others.

Zoom introduces two-factor authentication to boost users’ security

0

Video meet app Zoom has introduced Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for additional security, making it easier for admins and organizations to protect their users’ data and prevent security breaches.

To enable Zoom’s 2FA at the account-level for password-based authentication, account admins sign-in to the Zoom Dashboard.

“In the navigation menu, click Advanced, then Security. Make sure the Sign in with Two-Factor Authentication option is enabled. Select one of these options to enable 2FA for: All users in your account: Enable 2FA for all users in the account,” the company said in a statement on Friday.

One can choose users with specific roles and users belonging to specific groups too.

With 2FA, organizations can reduce the risk of identity theft and security breaches by adding an extra layer of security that prevents bad actors from accessing accounts by guessing passwords or gaining access to employees’ or students’ devices.

“Implementing 2FA helps organizations meet compliance obligations for sensitive data and customer information,” Zoom said.

For small businesses and schools, it can be expensive to pay for an SSO (single sign-on) service.

According to the company, Zoom’s 2FA provides a free and effective way to validate users and protect against security breaches.

With Zoom’s 2FA, users have the option to use authentication apps that support Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) protocol (such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and FreeOTP), or have Zoom send a code via SMS or phone call, as the second factor of the account authentication process.

Global enterprise server market logs $24 billion in Q2: IDC

0

The global enterprise server market grew 19.8 percent in the second quarter (year over year) to reach $24 billion on robust demand, according to a new report.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, worldwide server shipments grew 18.4 percent to nearly 3.2 million units in the June quarter.

HPE/New H3C Group finished the quarter with a market share of 14.9 percent while Dell Technologies captured a 13.9 percent share of worldwide revenues.

“We certainly see areas of reduced spending, but this was offset by investments made by large cloud builders and enterprises targeting solutions that support shifting infrastructure needs caused by the global pandemic,” said Paul Maguranis, senior research analyst, Infrastructure Platforms and Technologies at IDC.

Investments in Asia/Pacific were also particularly strong, growing 31 percent year over year.

Inspur/Inspur Power Systems took third place with a 10.5 percent share.

Lenovo and IBM tied for the fourth spot with 6.1 percent and 6 percent share, respectively.

In terms of server-class, volume server revenue was up 22.1 per cent to $18.7 billion, while midrange server revenue declined 0.4 per cent to about $3.3 billion and high-end systems grew by 44.1 percent to $1.9 billion.

The ODM Direct group of vendors accounted for 28.8 percent of total server revenue at $6.9 billion with year-over-year growth of 63.4 percent and delivered 34.4 percent of all units shipped during the quarter, the IDC said.

Adelaide Strikers sign Matt Renshaw until BBL 12

0

Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Adelaide Strikers have signed all-rounder Matt Renshaw from Brisbane Heat on a three-year deal.

Renshaw has become a fine exponent of the BBL in recent times, coming into his own in the T20 arena after a promising start to his Test career. The 24-year-old scored the second-highest runs for Brisbane Heat last season with 348, including three fifties.

“The Adelaide Strikers have always been an impressive franchise and to be joining them for the next three years, I’m just ecstatic,” Renshaw said.

Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka has entered the final of the ongoing US Open after coming from a set down to surprise rival Serena Williams and book a summit clash with 2018 champion Naomi Osaka.

In a pulsating semi-final match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday, Azarenka defeated Williams 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 after one hour and 55 minutes to reach her third US Open final.

“Seven is my favorite number, so I guess it’s meant to be,” Azarenka noted, joking about the gap between major final appearances during her on-court interview as per the WTA website. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity, to be able to play such a champion in a semifinal. The road to the final requires you to beat the best players, and today was definitely that day.”

“Hopefully this inspires women to go after their dreams. I feel like you can’t always identify yourself as just one thing because we have many things we can do in our lives.

“A parent is the most important thing I can be in my life, but I’m also a tennis player, a fighter on the court. I want to go after my personal dreams, to inspire my child. I hope women around the world know they can do anything. Being a parent is the toughest thing, so once you can balance that, you can do anything,” she added.

In the other semi-final, Osaka edged past No.28 seed Jennifer Brady in a thrilling three-set contest, winning the match 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-3.

The two-time Grand Slam winner matched Brady fired 35 winners to 17 unforced errors to take down the American and book her spot into the third Grand Slam final of her career.

“Sometimes I think I have no choice but to play as hard as I can because my opponent isn’t giving me any looks,” Osaka said in her post-match press conference. “For me, normally if I focus that much, then the match potentially could be over in two. But I felt like it just kept going on.

“Honestly, it was a bit funny because of that quality of an opponent… at the final stages of a tournament. Yeah, it was fun,” she added.
