However, the tests of her sister and assistant were negative.

In a tweet en route to Chandigarh via road, she said, “I have lived the courage, valor, and sacrifice of Rani Laxmibai through my films. The sad thing is that I am being prevented from coming to my own Maharashtra. I will continue to raise my voice against wrong, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Shivaji.”

The family of Kangana was settled at Bhambla village near Hamirpur town, some 200 km from the state capital Shimla.

Rajasthan CM postpones all meetings for one month

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has postponed all meetings for a month beginning from Wednesday.

The decision came on Tuesday night, a state government press release said.

Around 40 employees in the Chief Minister’s residence and office were found COVID infected. They also included the police and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) personnel, who were associated with the Chief Minister’s security.

Gehlot said following the norms of social distancing and health protocols are the main measures that can fight the spread of Covid-19. This infection can be controlled by protecting ourselves.

“For this reason, on the advice of doctors, I have decided not to meet anyone for the next month. However, I will participate via video conference for matters to discuss good governance,” he said in the release.

Gehlot said that in this crisis of the Covid-19 epidemic, protecting the lives of the people of the state was the highest priority of the government. For this, the state government was making every effort by strengthening the medical facilities, but the infection of this epidemic can be prevented with everyone’s support, he said.

The Chief Minister appealed to the people of the country to wear masks, keep social distancing, avoid crowds, keep social interactions to a minimum, leave home only when necessary and cater to all other health protocols with full responsibility.

Covid-stress may be hard to beat even with exercise

0

Exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress, but now in a major study, the researchers have revealed that it may not be enough for the levels caused by Covid-19.

People who reported increasing their physical activity after the start of Covid-19 stay-at-home orders reported higher levels of stress and anxiety than those whose activity levels stayed the same, the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE reported.

“Certainly, people who don’t exercise know that there are associations with mental health outcomes, yet the ones that increased their exercise also reported increased anxiety and stress,” said lead author Glen Duncan from the Washington State University.

For the study, the research team analyzed data from over 900 pairs of identical and same-sex fraternal twins from the Washington State Twin Registry.

Of the survey respondents, 42 percent reported decreasing levels of physical activity since the COVID crisis began, and 27 percent said they had increased their activities. Another 31 percent reported no change.

Participants were asked about changes in their physical activity compared to one month previously.

Those who reported a decrease in physical activity within two-weeks after the start of stay-at-home orders had a perceived higher level of stress and anxiety, which was expected.

But surprisingly, many of the respondents who increased their physical activity felt the same way.

The researchers found that the association between decreased physical activity and stress was confounded by genetic and environmental factors.

The researchers found some association between decreased physical activity and anxiety: within a pair of twins, the sibling with decreased physical activity had higher levels of anxiety than the sibling who reported no change.

In addition, anxiety levels were higher among older people and women.

“It’s not necessary that exercise won’t help you personally manage stress. It’s just that there is something genetically and environmentally linking the two,” Duncan said.

Recently, a study, published in the journal Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy, revealed that early identification and treatment is vital to avoid long-term mental health consequences from Covid-19 among children and young people.

Google Cloud partners in India to grow much faster by 2025: IDC

0

Google Cloud partners are expected to generate $6.11 in 2020 and up to $8.33 in revenue for every $1 of Google Cloud products sold, giving them an opportunity to grow more than 3.7 times by 2025, an IDC study said on Wednesday.

On average, Google Cloud partners are growing at 35 percent (year-over-year), with a significant group of partners (20 percent) growing even faster, at more than 75 percent.

“The demand for cloud technology and services is growing rapidly in India. The partner ecosystem here is looking to work with cloud providers like us to help businesses of all sizes embark on a digital transformation journey,” said Amitabh Jacob, Head of Partners & Alliances, Google Cloud India.

Nearly 50 percent of Google Cloud partners are in the late stage of digital maturity and more than a third of Google Cloud partners have fully integrated digital into their strategies and businesses.

“Our goal of 100 percent partner attachment will create more opportunities for our partners to provide valuable services to customers and help them build for the future,” Jacob said.

According to the study, not only is Google Cloud partner revenue growing faster than Google Cloud’s revenue, but the net margin opportunity of $121 billion through 2025 will also be well distributed across partner activities globally.

The partners, who are creating their own unique IP around Google Cloud, are seeing very strong margins associated with their products.

“Partners are seeing strong margins across multiple activities, including resale, IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS add-ons, IT services, business services, and support for hardware and networking,” the report mentioned.

“The overall IT market is continuing to see growth as demand for cloud infrastructure and cloud capabilities in areas like data analytics, artificial intelligence, IoT, and security are fast advancing,” said the IDC.

The global pandemic has further accelerated businesses’ needs for these capabilities, seeking to quickly adapt or even to take this opportunity to speed-up their digital transformation journey, it said.

In a video, the accused Chandan Yadav aka Baggad, a resident of Karaudi Kala in Sultanpur district, is seen with a gathering of around 50 people.

He is heard saying, “Sabhapati Yadav mere mama lagte hain. Agar unko kuchh hua to mai seethe Moti Singh ka encounter karoonga (Sabhapati Yadav is my maternal uncle. If anything untoward happens to him, I will do an encounter on Moti Singh).”

The supporters of Sabhapati Yadav are seen cheering and raising slogans in his favour soon afterwards.

Uttar Pradesh Minister Rajendra Pratap Singh, popularly known as Moti Singh, is MLA from Patti constituency in Pratapgarh.

Taking cognizance of the video clip, police have registered a case against Chandan Yadav Baggad under Sections 147, 504, 506, 507, 188, and 269 of IPC, Section 66 of IT Act, and Section 51 of Disaster Management Act at Aspur Devsara police station of Pratapgarh on Tuesday.

IG Prayagraj range K.P. Singh said, “We have constituted two police teams to arrest the accused. The teams are also identifying the others visible in the video along with the accused.”

Police officials said Sabhapati Yadav is a history-sheeter of Aspur Devsara police station and around 50 criminal cases are pending against him.

Last month, police had attached his properties worth Rs 1.6 crore under the Gangster Act.

SP Pratapgarh Anurag Arya said, “After registering an FIR under appropriate sections against Chandan Yadav and others, two police teams are carrying out raids to nab all the accused. We are identifying the people standing around Chandan Yadav in the video.”

Rani my favourite & I hope to become like her someday, says Lalremsiami

0

Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami has been one of the go-to players on the national side in the last few years. The 20-year-old, who has played 64 matches for India, has played a part in many important victories for India which include the FIH Women’s Series Finals and FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers last year. However, the forward expressed that the Asia Cup in 2017 was the turning point of her career.

“The Asia Cup 2017 was one among the first international competitions for me and therefore it was very important for me to perform in the tournament. My confidence and belief in my game increased after playing well in the competition. We qualified for the 2018 World Cup after winning that tournament as well, so therefore the Asia Cup 2017 will always remain special for me,” Lalremsiami.

Captain Rani has had a huge influence on Lalremsiami. When the 20-year-old joined the Indian team for the first time in 2017, she didn’t know how to speak in Hindi. Rani, who was Lalremsiami’s roommate, taught her Hindi and was always there to help the player from Mizoram with her game.

“I used to watch Rani di and other senior players on TV before joining the Indian team. Therefore, it’s just brilliant to be playing alongside a player like Rani. She is my favorite player and I hope to become a player like her someday. She has always been there for me.”

“Whenever I have any issue with my game, I have always asked Rani di and she taught me Hindi as well when I had joined the Indian team for the first time. I hope to play alongside Rani for a long time,” said the 20-year-old.

Lalremsiami, who learned the basic techniques of hockey at the Mizoram government-run hockey academy in Thenzawl, said that she is delighted to see the growth of the sport in the north-east.

“Hockey has certainly grown in the north-east in the last few years. We have Sushila Chanu in our team, who has featured in over 150 games for India. Kothajit Singh Khadangbam, Nilakanta Sharma, and Chinglensana Singh Kangujam have also played many matches for the Indian men’s hockey team.

“I am sure if we keep performing for our teams, the youngsters in the North East will be inspired to take up the sport and hockey will grow even further in the region,” said the forward.

Amazon, Apple, Google’s smart home project set for 2021 launch

0

Technology giants Amazon, Apple, and Google who joined forces with Zigbee Alliance for a unified, open-source smart home platform are on track to deliver a draft specification by late 2020 and release the standard in 2021.

According to the Zigbee Alliance, from a few dozen participating companies, it has grown to more than 145 active member companies.

The aim is to develop and promote the adoption of a new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet.

The ‘Project Connected Home over IP’ is targeting smart home devices which include lighting and electrical, HVAC controls (thermostats, AC units), access control (door locks, garage doors), safety and security (sensors, detectors, security systems), window coverings/shades, TVs, access points, bridges, and others.

The project was announced in December last year as a unified standard that would make it easier for device manufacturers to create smart home hardware.

“The goal is that future devices will be able to easily add support for all three major voice assistants — Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and Google’s Assistant — at once,” Zigbee Alliance said in a statement on Tuesday.

In turn, that will make it easier to set up and configure smart home devices with your system of choice.

Zigbee Alliance board member companies are IKEA, Legrand, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy, and Wulian, among others.

“We are thrilled that four new global strategic companies – ASSA ABLOY, Resideo, STMicroelectronics, and Tuya – have joined the Zigbee Alliance’s Board of Directors and are actively contributing to and promoting the Project,” the alliance said.

The goal of the “Connected Home over IP” project is to simplify development for manufacturers and increase compatibility for consumers.

By building upon Internet Protocol (IP), the project aims to enable communication across smart home devices, mobile apps, and cloud services and to define a specific set of IP-based networking technologies for device certification, Apple said in an earlier statement.

The industry working group will take an open-source approach for the development and implementation of a new, unified connectivity protocol.

‘Salaam Namaste’ turns 15: Director Siddharth Anand says film was ahead of time

Salaam Namaste, starring Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, released 15 years ago on this day. Director Siddharth Anand says the film was ahead of its time.

“I think ‘Salaam Namaste’ was dealing with an issue that was taboo or not spoken about, but very much prevalent whether in India or with Indians outside. It felt like it was ahead of its time, but the thing is that there was no deliberate attempt to do something that is scandalous or trying to do something different,” Anand said about the quirky comedy, which tells the story of two young NRIs in Melbourne (played by Saif and Preity), who live together, and the girl subsequently gets pregnant. Upon release, many viewers found shades of similarity between the film and the 1995 Hollywood comedy “Nine Months”.

Anand added: “When the film was releasing and we promoted it (as a story) about live-in relationships, that is when it actually hit me that we were dealing with something which is very new!”

The director said that he never aimed at doing something different or new with the film.

“It was just something like, they are sharing the rent and now they have started seeing each other, so they are going to move from two rooms to one room. That’s living in. So, it was organic, nothing to be scandalous about that I wanted to do something new and cool,” he recalled.

“We didn’t try too hard and it wasn’t in your face. That is why it started a very important conversation in society about Indians living in without getting married,” he claimed.

From Kunal Kohli’s “Hum Tum”, which he scripted, to last year’s blockbuster “War”, Anand says he has never made a deliberate effort to shape pop culture. “I don’t even know if I have. I think just the fact that I started out very young making films, somewhere, being of that age group, what I made resonated with the audience.”

The filmmaker says in his 15-year-long career, he has made six films and that he has tried to do something different each time. “I get bored very easily. I get bored with my own ideas easily. So, I am always trying to do something different,” he said.

The lockdown was an attack on the poor, says Rahul

Continuing his attack on the government over the state of the economy, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the unplanned lockdown broke the backbone of the Indian economy and it was the Modi government’s third attack on the unorganized sector.

Releasing his fourth video of the series on Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi said: “The poor, those working in small and medium businesses, are daily wage earners. They eat with what they earn each day. When you announced a lockdown without notice, you attacked them.”

Gandhi reiterated his point that the lockdown did not yield results as India surpassed Brazil and became the second worst-hit nation by the pandemic. “The Prime Minister said the fight will be for 21 days, the backbone of the unorganized sector broke in 21 days,” he added.

The Congress leader alleged that the government did not pay any heed on the advice of the party and when it was time to open after the lockdown, the Congress party told the government several times that helping the poor was essential. “A scheme like NYAY needed to be implemented, the money needed to be directly deposited in bank accounts. But they didn’t do it,” said Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress in its letters to the Prime Minister had suggested that for small and medium businesses, the government should prepare a package.

“They needed to be saved. Without this money, they would not be able to survive, but the government did nothing. Instead, the government waived off taxes worth lakhs of crores of the richest 15-20 people,” the Congress leader said.

“The lockdown was not an attack on corona but an attack on the poor of India. It was an attack on the future of our youth, laborers, farmers, and small shopkeepers and unorganized sector,” Gandhi has been saying this all along.

Earlier Rahul Gandhi in his video had questioned the GST and demonization. Rahul Gandhi had said that the GST was the UPA’s idea of easy taxation but the NDA has made it “complex and complicated”.

“The GST implemented by the NDA government is different as four slabs of taxes are there to the tune of 28 percent, it’s very complicated and very difficult to understand,” said Rahul.

The small and medium businesses can’t comply with this tax procedure but the big companies can hire as many accountants as possible, he said.

He had said that “this GST is an absolute failure. Not only is it unsuccessful, but it is also an attack on the poor and on the small and medium businesses. GST is not a tax system, it is an attack on India’s poor. It is an attack on small shopkeepers, small and medium businesses, farmers, and laborers.”

Rahul last week released his second video and alleged that demonetization was an attack on India’s poor, its farmers, laborers, and small shopkeepers and termed it as an attack on India’s unorganized economy.

Rahul Gandhi said that “demonetization did not erase black money as was claimed by the Prime Minister and it did not benefit the poor and the advantage was given to India’s biggest billionaires.”

He had said demonetization wiped out cash from the system and due to this, the informal sector has suffered because the unorganized economy runs on cash whether it is a small shopkeeper, farmer, or laborer.

With 89k fresh cases India’s Covid-19 tally reaches 43.7 lakh

0

India on Wednesday witnessed a spike of 89,706 fresh cases of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) taking the total tally to 43,70,128 with 1,115 deaths due to pandemic in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry data revealed.

The spike of 89,706 cases comes a day after India witnessed a decline of fresh cases on Tuesday with 75,809 cases.

India now is the second worst-hit country after the US, with 43.7 million Covid-19 cases since the first was reported on January 30.

Out of the total 43,70,128 cases, 8,97,394 are active cases; 33,98,844 have recovered so far while 73,890 lost the battle against the deadly virus.

While the recovery rate was at a whopping high of 77.77 percent, the fatality rate stands at 1.69 percent, the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare shows.

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh are the worst-hit states. These five states account for over 62 percent of the active cases, according to the Health Ministry.

According to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India conducted a record 11,54,549 tests in a single day on Tuesday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 5,18,04,677.

Osaka ousts Rogers, to face Brady in US Open semis

0

Japan’s Naomi Osaka advanced to the semi-finals of the ongoing US Open, defeating Shelby Rogers in straight sets at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

On Tuesday, Osaka ousted Rogers 6-3, 6-4 in 79 minutes to make it to US Open semi-finals for the second time in her career.

“I’m aware that the opponents that I play from now on are going to be very tough,” 4th-seeded Osaka said, in her post-match press conference as per the WTA website. “For me, I think the last two Grand Slams, everything happened so fast, I wasn’t really in the moment. I’m just really happy to be in the semis, and hopefully, I can keep going.”

Osaka fired 24 winners, including seven aces, and made only eight unforced errors. The Japanese player, who won the first of her two consecutive Grand Slam titles in New York two years ago, was nearly peerless off of her first serve, winning 83 percent of points when she got that shot into play.

“The big thing for me was to be the aggressor and to be okay with making unforced errors,” said Osaka. “Apparently I didn’t make that many. But, yeah, just to accept the unforced errors because I know that I’m going for shots.”

Osaka will now face No.28 seed Jennifer Brady in the final four. Brady had dispatched No.23 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan earlier on Tuesday to reach her first-ever Grand Slam semifinal.

Tour de France: Ireland’s Sam Bennett claims first stage win

0

Ireland’s Sam Bennett edged out Australia’s Caleb Ewan and Slovakia’s Peter Sagan in a sprint finish to claim his first stage win on the Tour de France as Primoz Roglic defended his yellow jersey after the 168.5 rides from Ile d’Oleron Le Chatea-d’Oleron to Ile de Re Saint-Martin-de-Re.

On Tuesday, Bennett became the sixth Irishman to win a stage at the Tour and ensured he now has stage wins at all three of cycling’s Grand Tours. He won three at the Giro d’Italia in 2018 and two at the Vuelta an Espana in 2019, reports Xinhua news agency.

“You dream of it and never think it will happen,” an emotional Bennett said after the race, during which the 29-year-old collected 65 sprint points to clinch the green jersey from Slovakia’s Peter Sagan.

Slovenia’s Roglic arrived with the leading group to remain 21 seconds ahead of defending champion Egan Bernal on the overall standings.

Only a couple of hours before the race started on Tuesday, the Tour organizers announced that all the riders’ tests returned negative but race director Christian Prudhomme tested positive for Covid-19 along with four staff members from four different teams.

All five infected people have been dropped from the race bubble and been put in medical quarantine.

Microsoft fixes 130 bugs in Windows OS, other software

0

Microsoft has fixed nearly 130 security vulnerabilities in its Windows operating system and supported software with its Patch Tuesday, September update.

According to reports, 23 of these bugs could be exploited by hackers to control Windows computers “with little or no help from users”.

Microsoft patched 130 vulnerabilities across 15 products, ranging from Windows to ASP.NET.

“The majority of the most dangerous or “critical” bugs deal with issues in Microsoft’s various Windows operating systems and its web browsers, Internet Explorer and Edge,” reports Krebsonsecurity.

Of these, 32 were classified as remote code execution issues. These are vulnerabilities that allow hackers to exploit vulnerable apps remotely over a network.

Among the chief concerns is CVE-2020-16875, which involves a critical flaw in the email software Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 and 2019.

“An attacker could leverage the Exchange bug to run code of his choosing just by sending a booby-trapped email to a vulnerable Exchange server”.

There are no security updates available for Adobe’s Flash Player. The last time Adobe Flash got a security update was in June this year.

Microsoft has announced to end support for Adobe Flash Player on Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 at the end of 2020.

Epic Games portrays itself as modern corporate Robin Hood: Apple

0

While Epic Games has blamed Apple for restricting its business on the App Store, the iPhone maker has hit back again, saying the arguments are “self-righteous” and “self-interested”, the media reported on Wednesday.

In its latest court filing, Apple said Epic has benefited from Apple’s promotion and developer tools, earning more than $600 million through the App Store.

“Although Epic portrays itself as a modern corporate Robin Hood, in reality, it is a multi-billion dollar enterprise that simply wants to pay nothing for the tremendous value it derives from the App Store,” it said in the filing.

Apple accused Epic Games of seeking a special deal before ultimately breaching its contract with the update, reports the BBC.

A US judge ruled late last month that Apple cannot delete the developer account of Epic Games that support the open and real-time 3D creation platform Unreal Engine but can keep the Fortnite game away from the App Store for violating its policies.

Apple, however, removed the account of Epic Games from its App Store. It pulled out the Fortnite Game earlier on August 13 for adding an in-app payment system in violation of the App Store rules.

In its court filing, Apple denied that its 30 percent commission was anti-competitive, saying it was Epic Games that violated its contract.

Meanwhile, Epic Games has made a fresh effort to get its popular Fortnite game back on the App Store by filing a motion that seeks a preliminary injunction against Apple.

Epic Games said in the motion that more than 116 million registered Fortnite players have accessed the game via Apple devices.

The game has a huge following of over 350 million monthly active players and is available on multiple platforms.

“Apple is a monopolist. It controls all app distribution on iOS. It controls all in-app payment processing for digital content on iOS. It unlawfully maintains these two monopolies by explicitly prohibiting any competitive entry in either market,” Epic Games said in the filing.

Epic Games argued it is “likely to suffer irreparable harm” in the absence of a preliminary injunction and that “the balance of harm tips sharply in Epic’s favor.”

Daily active users of the Fortnite game have plummeted more than 60 percent on Apple iOS devices since the ban.

Google introduces ‘Verified Calls’ to protect people from scammers

0

In a bid to make people safe from spam and scam calls, Google has announced a new feature named Verified Calls on its Phone app. It comes pre-loaded on several Android phones and will be available for download later this week on more Android devices in select countries, including India.

The ‘Verified Calls’ shows the caller’s name, logo, the reason for calling, and a verification symbol indicating that the business has been authenticated by Google.

“This is done in a secure way and Google doesn’t collect or store any personally identifiable information after verification,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Verified Calls is initially rolling out in the US, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, and India, with more countries to come.

A 2019 report by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) found that phone calls were the number one way people reported being contacted by scammers.

While most people said they hung up on those calls, those who lost money reported a median loss of $1,000.

“We’ve been piloting Verified Calls for a few months, and the early results indicate that it improves the likelihood of someone answering a call,” Google said.

For instance, banks calling to alert a customer about a possible fraudulent transaction can increase answer rates by stating the call reason.

“We also have existing partners — including Neustar, Five9, Vonage, Aspect, Bandwidth, Prestus, Telecall, and JustCall — ready to help brands improve their answer rates by using Verified Calls,” Google said.

Oil sheen seen at the back of stricken VLCC New Diamond

0

The Indian Coast Guard has said oil sheen has been observed astern/backside of the very large crude carrier (VLCC) New Diamond that has been on fire for the past six days.

The Coast Guard said oil spill dispersants were sprayed by its Dornier aircraft to neutralize.

The ship is laden with about 300,000 tons of Kuwaiti crude oil for Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was bound to India’s Paradip Port in Odisha where the former has a large refinery.

On Tuesday, the Coast Guard said the vessel is trimmed by aft (backside of the ship dipped down into the water) by about three feet or by about one meter.

The Indian coastal security agency also said owing to the continued fire the accommodation superstructure has weakened while no significant list of the vessel was observed.

It is not known what other damage the vessel has suffered owing to continued fire for six days.

The 20-year-old VLCC, sailing under the Panama flag, reported fire on-Board on September 3 when it was about 37 nautical miles off the coast in Sri Lankan Exclusive Economic Zone.

Later the burning tanker was towed away to prevent drifting to shallow waters.

The New Diamond oil tanker departed from Mina Al Ahmadi, Kuwait on August 23 and was headed to India’s Paradip port.

The oil tanker was expected to reach Paradip in Odisha on September 5.

According to the Coast Guard, the vessel reported a major explosion in its engine room while it was on its way to Pradip.

The first information about the vessel fire was received at the Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai.

A Coast Guard official had earlier told IANS that the ship’s fuel is on fire.

The ship apparently had about 1,700 tons of fuel when it caught fire.
