The casting is half the battle won (Column: B-Town)

0

A film’s casting has often been among the prime causes of a film failing. Then, it may be a big, renowned filmmaker or a medium budget one. This is more a norm when a filmmaker chooses to cast a saleable superstar rather than what the script demands. Often, a script demands a new face, but for commercial reasons, the maker takes that risk.

At other times, it is a pure case of misjudgment or dodging logic. The audience has its definite, set ideas, and going against them can often be disastrous for a film. For example, would a man discard a very pretty woman (in public perception) for a lesser beauty, other things being equal? That is to say, the cause is not justifiable.

The example is Jeetendra’s home production, “Deedar-E-Yaar”. It had a usual story of two bum-chums falling in love with the same girl, played by Tina Munim. Set in a Muslim background, the story gets convoluted as one friend marries her only to instantly divorce her for the sake of his friend. The other woman on the scene is Rekha, the siren of that era. Besides the poor scripting, people were not convinced that with Rekha on the scene, whatever her character maybe, two guys would vie for Tina Munim (masses as in the stalls audience ruled the box office in those days).

Another such movie was “Yeh Vaada Raha” where Poonam Dhillon, after a disfigured face due to a road accident, comes back as Tina Munim following a series of plastic surgery procedures! With good face value and an excellent musical score to back it, the film still flopped. Let alone the face but nothing about the rest of the anatomy matched! You don’t expect people to accept a new face for a girl the man fell in love within the first place.

Wrong pairing is described as lacking chemistry in the film parlance. This chemistry between a hero and his heroine works magic on the audience. If they can’t work that out, the viewer finds something amiss. But, when film buffs endorsed a star pair, it worked wonders. The examples are aplenty. The Dharmendra-Hema Malini pairing is among the prime example. The pair had cultivated its own audience and casting them together guaranteed the film a hearty opening response. Not surprising that these stars were paired in over 40 films together! Must be a record of sorts!!

Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore were the pair to cast for a few years and did nine films together. Similarly, Khanna also did as many as nine films with Mumtaz. Since he was a romantic star, he paired with many heroines, till the time the trends changed and Khanna was displaced from top rank. Jeetendra paired well with many female stars but was most preferred with Sridevi eventually. And, then, there was the pair of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, who worked together in some 19 films.

One has not seen such popular pairs happening in recent years. For some male actors, the female star changes in every film, for whatever reason.

Subhash Ghai made “Karz” on the theme of reincarnation. Where Raj Kiran is killed and Rishi Kapoor steps in as the reincarnated Raj Kiran. Ghai did his best to make it convincing so that the viewers would accept the change. The film’s music was an instant hit and is evergreen. But, the film was not totally accepted. It did its best business mainly in Mumbai city and remained average in the rest of the country.

When dealing with the reincarnation theme, a maker has to be very sure the concept is plausible, and the faces in the story remain constant. Even when that is done, the acceptance takes a day or two to sink in.

“Milan” starring Sunil Dutt and Nutan is one such film. The film’s music was catching on and can be rated as immortal but the film received a tepid opening response. In those days, word of mouth meant a lot, in fact, it was the only way a film could catch momentum. And, “Milan” did. It went on to become a huge hit.

Rakesh Roshan had taken up a reincarnation theme for his film, “Karan Arjun”. Even while the film was under production, he did not seem to be very sure if he had made the right decision and he would willingly show the rush prints of the film to trade people whose opinion mattered. The test of the way the film was handled depended on when he brings Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Rakhee together and how convincingly he does it. He did that well. Add to that, the Bukhari mother factor, as always, worked with our audience in this film, too, and the film went on to become a blockbuster.

“Kudrat” directed by Chetan Anand with Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Rajkumar, Hema Malini, and Priya Rajvansh, was a major production with reincarnation as its theme — again, with a haunting musical score. The film was, however, rejected by the trade as well as the moviegoers, at the very onset. Here, one felt the casting of Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini was not quite convincing and the film needed a younger pair.

While Shah Rukh Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” sailed through, Vikram Bhatt’s “Dangerous Ishq”, which looked inspired from the stories from Dr. Brian Weiss’ book, “Many Lives, Many Masters”, was a patchy job and failed to work.

Then there were films where an established maker like Manmohan Desai, among others, started taking the audience for granted. Amitabh Bachchan was preferred courting glamorous female actors like Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi among others. But, as Bachchan grew in age, Desai started casting lesser faces opposite him like Rati Agnihotri, Amrita Singh, and Meenakshi Seshadri. As they say, the chemistry was found lacking, and these films failed to match the success of Desai’s earlier films.

Desai also made the mistake of pitting Bachchan against villains who were not in his league. That made Bachchan also a lesser hero.

As they say, your hero is only as big as the villain in your film.

Amrish Puri, a king-sized actor, when it came to playing a villain, always had this grouse that on screen he had to take a beating from small heroes whom he could knock out in one punch in real life!

Now that most top stars have been making their own films, they seem to count on their own popularity and do not care for casting according to the demand of the subject. Salman Khan, for example, decided to remake an American film, “Little Boy”, which would qualify as a children’s film in India as “Tubelight”. What is worse, he thought that the role played by the child in the original can be converted into that of an underdeveloped adult which Salman played! That was a blunder and, no wonder, a disaster at the box office.

As for Shah Rukh Khan, he is reduced to making his own films as the banners loyal to him seem to have distanced him from their casting department. It was easy to work with top banners and leave the burden of hit or flop on them. But, since he started making films for himself, he has not been able to slot where his films would be acceptable to the public. He tried playing a superhero in “Ra. One”, then, his old romantic self in “Jab Harry Met Sejal”, as well as “Zero”, where the women will fall for him so what if he is a dwarf, both to no avail.

When the downfall starts, the mind stops working logically. He made “Fan”, a film in self-glorification, a sort of tribute to himself! Most of all, how could he even think of glorifying a much-hated petty criminal from Gujarat, Abdul Latif, in “Raees”? And, Latif was not even known anywhere else except parts of Gujarat!

And, to think that these are the actors who vouch by, “I never accept a film unless I read the script!”

One actor who has not been greedy about looking for subjects where he can hog the limelight is Aamir Khan. “Dangal” was a biopic of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a champion wrestler with dreams to see his daughter make a name for herself in the wrestling world. The film is Aamir’s best example and the biggest hit from his banner. He played an older man, Phogat, who trains his daughter to fulfill his and her dreams.

There are no more popular pairs because the idea worked mainly in love stories. Now, few of those are made, if at all. With films being made with two or three male stars, the female stars have to be newer to the field or ones who don’t have much work. While the male stars have to be saleable, the female need not be. The budget has to be balanced and not let it become top-heavy. As far as casting blunders are concerned, they will continue to occur.

One can write volumes on the subject of casting but the ones mentioned here give an idea.

24 new cases take Agra Covid-19 tally to 2,290

0

Even as the 55-hour long weekend lockdown continues, 24 fresh cases of Covid-19 have taken Agra’s total tally to 2,290 with 102 deaths.

The number of active cases in the district now is 339. Health officials said 78,013 samples had been tested. The number of recoveries is 1,849 and the rate now is 80.79 percent. The number of containment zones remains high at 155.

District authorities said the mini lockdown will continue till 5 a.m. (Monday morning). Markets will remain closed, except for the chemist shops and doctors’ clinics.

Due to the weekend lockdown and continued closure of the schools and other educational institutes, the Independence Day celebrations remained more of a formality. The national Tricolour was unfurled at the collectorate and the Divisional Commissioner’s office. However, there were no march-pasts and cultural programs.

Meanwhile, the local industrialists in their reactions to the media have welcomed the “very positive and encouraging” initiatives spelled out by the Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi. The industries in the Agra region have been badly hit by the continuing pandemic.

The agricultural sector, however, has not been affected much. “The rainy spell in the last few days have brought cheer to the farmers, who were fearing a drought a fortnight ago. Agricultural operations have begun and the prospects of a good Kharif crop remain high,” commented Ravi Singh, a farmer of the Barauli Ahir block.

The river Yamuna, however, continued to remain dry and polluted. “Upstream barrages have not yet released water as the rains have not been surplus so far. The local authorities should have used this dry season to desilt and dredge the river bed to remove all pollutants. They have not been able to tap the drains that pollute the river. Also, there is still no clarity on when work will begin on the Yamuna barrage downstream of the Taj Mahal,” said eminent environmentalist Devashish Bhattacharya.

13-year-old raped and killed in UP district

In another case of brutality, a 13-year-old Dalit girl was raped and killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, said police.

Her body was found in a sugarcane field on Saturday.

Two men from her village have been arrested.

The girl had been strangled, her eyes gouged out and her tongue cut.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday in a village close to the Nepal border. Her body was found in the fields of one of the accused.

The district police chief Satyendra Kumar said, “The girl’s post mortem has confirmed rape. The two accused had been arrested already. We will file charges for rape, murder and also book them under the National Security Act.”

According to reports, the girl had gone missing on Friday afternoon.

“We went looking for her everywhere and finally found her in the sugarcane field. Her eyes had been gouged out. Her tongue was cut and she had been strangled with a ‘dupatta’,” the father of the girl said.

Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati condemned the incident on Twitter calling it ‘extremely shameful’.

“What is the difference between the governments of the Samajwadi Party and the present BJP if such incidents keep happening?” she asked.

Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad also commented on the incident. “Dalit oppression is at its peak under the BJP government… If it is not the jungle raj, then what is? Our daughters are not safe, our homes are not safe, there is an atmosphere of fear everywhere. Yogi Adityanath should resign,” he said.

It may be recalled that on August 6, a 6-year-old girl in Hapur district was kidnapped and raped. The police arrested the accused on Friday. The girl remains in a hospital and has been through at least one surgery. Doctors say she is stable but not out of danger.

Consider me retired: MS Dhoni bids adieu to international cricket (Lead)

0

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday announced his retirement in an Instagram post.

Dhoni posted a video montage with pictures at different points of his career along with a caption: “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired (sic).”

The two-time World Cup-winning skipper didn’t give details of the development as to whether he is retiring from the game entirely or if he is only bowing out from international cricket.

Dhoni is currently part of the Chennai Super Kings training camp at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and is expected to lead the team in the 2020 season of the Indian Premier League which is set to start on September 19.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan had recently said that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman would be a part of the franchise, even for the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IPL.

Dhoni’s last appearance in the blue jersey came in India’s semi-final defeat to New Zealand at the 2019 World Cup after which he took a break from professional cricket. In this time, Rishabh Pant and later KL Rahul took his place as a wicketkeeper of the Indian limited-overs side.

Earlier, head coach Ravi Shastri had said that Dhoni’s chances to make it to the Indian team that goes to the 2020 T20 World Cup — originally scheduled to be held in Australia in October-November this year — would depend on his performance in the IPL. However, both the IPL and the T20 World Cup were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Considered one of the most successful captains of all time in international cricket, Dhoni led the Indian team to victory in the 2007 World T20, which was also his first assignment as skipper of the team in any format, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

As Test captain, he also led the team to the numero uno spot in the ICC rankings for the first time ever in 2009. He is also the only captain to win all three ICC trophies. He has also led India to victories in the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016.

Dhoni also holds the record for most wins as an Indian captain in ODIs and T20Is, and most back-to-back wins by an Indian captain in ODIs.

He made his international debut in an ODI against Bangladesh in December 2004 and made his Test debut a year later against Sri Lanka. He amassed 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs and 1,617 runs in 98 T20Is. The wicketkeeper-batsman also has 229 ODI sixes – the most for an Indian batsman.

Dhoni had retired from Test cricket on December 30, 2014, and in the longest format of the game, he played 90 matches and scored 4,876 runs at an average of 38.09.

Dhoni will finish with no regrets on the field: Ganguly

0

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Saturday paid tribute to former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who has announced his retirement from international cricket.

“It is the end of an era. What a player he has been for the country and world cricket. His leadership qualities have been something, which will be hard to match, especially in the shorter format of the game,” Ganguly said in a BCCI media statement.

“His batting in one-day cricket in his early stages made the world stand up and notice his flair and sheer natural brilliance. Every good thing comes to an end and this has been an absolutely brilliant one.

“He has set the standards for the wicketkeepers to come and make a mark for the country. He will finish with no regrets on the field. An outstanding career; I wish him the best in life,” he added.

Dhoni, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanor, sharp understanding of the game, and astute leadership qualities.

One of the most admired and respected cricketers, Dhoni is also among the most successful captains in world cricket. It was under his leadership that India lifted the World Cup in 2011 after having led India to triumph in the World T20 in its maiden edition of the tournament held in 2007 in South Africa. With India winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England, Dhoni became the first and is still the only captain to date to have won all three ICC Trophies.

While his heroics in the limited-overs formats are well documented, it was also under his leadership that India became the No. 1 Test side in 2009 and the team stayed at the top for over 600 days. He led India to victory in 21 home Test matches, the most by an Indian captain.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said: “MS Dhoni is one of the greats of the modern era. I understand it’s a personal decision and we respect that. ‘Mahi’ as we all fondly refer to him, has had an exceptional career in international cricket.”

“His captaincy has been both inspiring and commendable. He is leaving the game richer from the time he joined. I wish him all the very best for IPL and his future endeavors,” he added.

Leaving behind a rich legacy that will be difficult to replicate, Dhoni holds the record for most international matches as captain (332). Unarguably the quickest man behind the wicket, Dhoni has 195 international stumpings, the most by any wicket-keeper.

Dhoni has turned up for the country till now in 350 ODIs, 90 Tests, and 98 T20Is while affecting a staggering 829 dismissals behind the stumps.

The world has seen Dhoni’s achievements, I’ve seen the person: Kohli

0

His achievements are there for everyone to see, but Virat Kohli on Saturday chose to focus on MS Dhoni the person, doffing his hat to the legendary former India captain who called time on his illustrious international career on Independence Day.

“Every cricketer has to end his journey one day, but still when someone you’ve gotten to know so closely announces that decision, you feel the emotion much more,” an emotional Indian captain Kohli said in a tweet.

“What you’ve done for the country will always remain in everyone’s heart…but the mutual respect and warmth I’ve received from you will always stay in mine.

“The world has seen achievements, I’ve seen the person. Thanks for everything skip. I tip my hat to you,” added Kohli.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who had ended his long wait for an ODI World Cup under Dhoni’s captaincy in 2011,
too wished luck to the former Indian skipper for his second innings.

“Your contribution to Indian cricket has been immense MS Dhoni. Winning the 2011 World Cup together has been the best moment of my life. Wishing you and your family all the very best for your 2nd innings,” Tendulkar said in a tweet as social media went into a tizzy on India’s 74th Independence Day following the Ranchi stumper batsman’s sudden decision.

“The legend retires in his own style as always, MS Dhoni bhai you have given it all for the country. The champions trophy triumph, 2011 World Cup, and the glorious @ChennaiIPL triumphs will always be etched in my memory. Good luck with all your future endeavors. #MSDhoni,” senior India off-spinner R Ashwin said in a tweet.

“A visionary leader who has given us innumerable memories to cherish. May your story continue to inspire people to push beyond the boundaries of wisdom and success. You will forever be a champion, MS Dhoni,” tweeted Mayank Agarwal.

“Congratulations MS Dhoni on a great international career. It was an honor to play alongside. Your calm demeanor and the laurels you brought as skipper will forever be remembered and cherished. Wishing you the very best,” said Anil Kumble.

“Welcome to the retirement club, MSD! What a magical career!” said former England batsman Kevin Pietersen.

“The 2011 World Cup win was Sachin Tendulkar farewell but masterminded by MS Dhoni … What an incredible international career … You could argue the greatest ever white-ball captain & finisher … Cheers for all the memories MS,” said former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Dhoni, who made his ODI debut in 2004, changed the face of Indian cricket with his calm demeanor, sharp understanding of the game, and astute leadership qualities.

Music labels pay nightclubs, restaurants to play their songs: Abhigyan Jha

0

Recently, popular rapper Badshah confessed to Mumbai Police that he had paid Rs 72 lakh to buy 72 million fake views, in order to create the record of ‘most viewed song’ for his track, Pagal, in 2019.

Now, Abhigyan Jha, director of the upcoming music web series, “The Socho Project”, claims there is a section of rappers, musicians, and even music companies who pay to popular restaurants and nightclubs to play their songs, as this is one of the fastest ways to gain popularity.

“The whole business of music has changed and it is different. It is not only about buying fake views on social media but there are clubs and restaurants paid to play songs of some artistes under some music labels. That is how one kind of songs are getting promoted, more than other genres of music. When you, as a listener are listening to their songs on every radio station, and in every club and restaurant, you are bound to believe that the artiste is popular! But guess what? That is fake popularity!” Abhigyan told IANS.

His words are justified from an artiste’s point of view, but many may argue that there is nothing wrong in this business model, especially for the clubs and restaurant owners, because at the end of the day they are here to make money, either from the music companies or from their customers. Abhigyan has a different view.

“There are age-old places, cafes, and clubs that are still running. In Mumbai and in other metro cities, clubs and restaurants mushroom and also closing down soon after. Why? Because food, music, and ambiance make the signature of every brand. By playing the same music that people are hearing everywhere, those places are not left with any signature,” he said.

“Tell me, why is Punjabi music being popularised as if music from other regions of the country almost does not exist! There is a difference between promoting one kind of music and overshadowing every other genre and artiste, not based on merit but by money and power structure. That has exactly happened in the recent past,” answered the director, who earlier worked on youth shows like “Jay Hind”, “Movers & Shakers”, “Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan” and films like “Krishna Cottage”.

In his upcoming show, “The Socho Project”, the director has worked with several new talents. The series has 25 new songs and it features known television actors like Lopa Mudra Raut, Gaurav Khanna, and Sahil Vaid among others.

AMU celebrates I-Day, highlights fight against Covid-19

0

The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) of the Aligarh Muslim University continues to be at the front in containing the magnitude of the pandemic with 70,000 samples tested so far to detect Covid-19.

“AMU is at the forefront in the fight against Covid-19, which has created an economic, health, and educational crisis in the country and the whole world,” said Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, while delivering the Independence Day speech.

“The Virology Lab in JNMC was one of the two labs in Uttar Pradesh to start testing Covid-19 cases and the first in Western Uttar Pradesh. JNMC, which has tested 70,000 samples to detect coronavirus to date, is equipped with a 100-bed Isolation Ward with a dedicated Operation Theatre, Labour Room, and Dialysis Unit. A Plasma Therapy Blood Bank has also been established,” he added.

Professor Mansoor emphasized that the coronavirus outbreak has thrown a great challenge to the country. He said, “We all stand united to fight this invisible menace.

“I am sure that with the cooperation and help of all sections of society, we will succeed in defeating this threat. Covid-19 has exposed us to extraordinary times and the best way to show our nationalism is to help one another in every possible way,” said Mansoor.

“India symbolizes the unity in diversity and tolerance and despite having religious and cultural diversity; our nation remains the largest one to have people living peacefully with each other. The idea of India envisaged by the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, for creating an inclusive multi-religious, multi-cultural, multi-linguistic, multi-ethnic society showing unity in diversity and reflecting the will and aspirations of different sections of society was enshrined in the Indian Constitution making India a secular and democratic state,” said Professor Mansoor.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor planted saplings in the premises of Sir Syed Hall to mark the occasion.

Meanwhile, the flag-hoisting ceremonies were organized with gaiety and enthusiasm at all colleges and schools of the university. The Provosts of all residential halls also hoisted flags at their offices.

Russia begins production of COVID-19 vaccine

0

Russia has begun production of the first batch of vaccines against COVID-19, its health ministry said in a statement released on Saturday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday announced the world’s first registered vaccine against the novel coronavirus, Sputnik V, which is named after the space satellite launched by Moscow in 1957.

The vaccine was created by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, a medical institute located near Moscow, Xinhua news agency reported.

Russia will offer the vaccine to other countries once its own citizens are vaccinated, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said Wednesday, adding that doubts over the effectiveness of the vaccine are unfounded.

So far, Russia has tallied a total of 917,884 cases, with 15,617 deaths and 729,411 recoveries.

AI to help identify homeless youth at substance abuse risk

0

Researchers, including two of Indian-origin, have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm which can help predict susceptibility to substance use disorder among young homeless individuals.

The study, presented at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, revealed that this algorithm can suggest personalized rehabilitation programs for highly susceptible homeless youth.

“Proactive prevention of substance use disorder among homeless youth is much more desirable than reactive mitigation strategies such as medical treatments for the disorder and other related interventions,” said study author Amulya Yadav from the Penn State University in the US.

For the results, the research team built the model using a dataset collected from approximately 1,400 homeless youth, ages 18 to 26, in six US states. The dataset was collected by the Research, Education, and Advocacy Co-Lab for Youth Stability and Thriving (REALIST), which includes Anamika Barman-Adhikari, assistant professor at the University of Denver and co-author of the paper.

The researchers then identified environmental, psychological, and behavioral factors associated with substance use disorder among them — such as criminal history, victimization experiences, and mental health characteristics. They found that adverse childhood experiences and physical street victimization were more strongly associated with substance use disorder than other types of victimization (such as sexual victimization) among homeless youth.

Additionally, PTSD and depression were found to be more strongly associated with substance use disorder than other mental health disorders among this population, according to the researchers. Next, the researchers divided their dataset into six smaller datasets to analyze geographical differences.

The team trained a separate model to predict substance abuse disorder among homeless youth in each of the six states — which have varying environmental conditions, drug legalization policies, and gang associations. The team observed several location-specific variations in the association level of some factors, according to Tabar.

“By looking at what the model has learned, we can effectively find out factors which may play a correlational role with people suffering from substance abuse disorder,” said Yadav.

“And once we know these factors, we are much more accurately able to predict whether somebody suffers from substance use,” he added.

Yadav and Barman-Adhikari are collaborating on a similar project through which they have developed a software agent that designs personalized rehabilitation programs for homeless youth suffering from opioid addiction. Their simulation results show that the software agent — called CORTA (Comprehensive Opioid Response Tool Driven by Artificial Intelligence) — outperforms baselines by approximately 110 percent in minimizing the number of homeless youth suffering from opioid addiction.

“We wanted to understand what the causative issues are behind people developing opiate addiction,” said Yadav.

Trump ‘probably not’ to join Putin-proposed summit on Iran

0

US President Donald Trump said that he would not participate in the summit on Iran that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed on Friday.

“Probably not,” Trump said when asked whether he would join the Putin-proposed video summit during a news conference at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Trump also confirmed to reporters that the United States “will be doing a snapback” against Iran, referring to restoring all pre-2015 UN sanctions against Iran.

“You will be watching it next week,” he added.

The UN Security Council on Friday failed to adopt a resolution that would extend the current arms embargo against Iran. The draft resolution, tabled by the United States, did not get the required nine votes in favour for adoption.

US Permanent Representative to the UN Kelly Craft claimed on Friday that “the United States has every right to initiate snapback of provisions of previous Security Council resolutions.”

“In the coming days, the United States will follow through on that promise, and we will stop at nothing to extend the arms embargo,” she said.

Under Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the six powers of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, the arms embargo against Iran expires on October 18, 2020.

The United States unilaterally withdrew from the deal in May 2018.

Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said Friday that the United States is no longer a participant of the Iran nuclear deal and therefore ineligible to demand the Security Council invoke a snapback.

Foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany also noted in June that they would not support any unilateral attempt to trigger UN sanctions snapback.

Putin proposed on Friday holding an urgent online meeting of the heads of the five states that are permanent members of the UN Security Council with the participation of the leaders of Germany and Iran to discuss Iran and the Persian Gulf situation.

Alert sounded in Telangana as heavy rains trigger flood situation

0

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao sounded an alert as heavy rains triggered flood situation in some parts of the state and also directed the concerned officials to be on alert.

Several tanks and canals were overflowing on Saturday due to the heavy rains lashing the state under the influence of a low-pressure area off the Bay of Bengal.

Parts of Warangal town were inundated due to incessant rain. The local authorities launched rescue and relief operations. Local authorities shifted people from affected areas to the relief camps.

Meanwhile, 14 farmers were rescued by a helicopter of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district. The farmers were stuck in floodwater in Kundanpally village when they were on their fields to pump out excess water.

Following a request by the state government, the Indian Air Force (IAF) sent a helicopter to airlift the farmers.

Meanwhile, the chief minister on Saturday reviewed the situation in the state at a high-level meeting held at official residence Pragati Bhavan.

He spoke to Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, Director General of Police Mahender Reddy, and the ministers.

He conducted a district-wise review of the situation and made certain suggestions. He also asked the officials to set up two control rooms in Hyderabad.

KCR instructed the ministers to stay put in their respective districts, coordinate with the collectors and police officials on a regular basis. The CM said since several tanks were filled to the brim, they may breach, roads may be inundated and low-lying areas may be flooded.

He said the united Karimnagar and Warangal districts have recorded the highest rainfall and tanks in these districts were filled to their capacity. He said officials should be more alert in these two districts.

On the instructions from the CM, the officials have kept two helicopters ready and they will be utilized to rescue people stranded in the floodwater.

Along with a helicopter owned by the state, a chopper from the military was also kept ready for use.

Meanwhile, met officials said districts like Mulugu, Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Jayashankar-Bhupalpally received rainfall of two months in just two days.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy spells in J. Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Warangal, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Mancherial districts on Saturday and Sunday.

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar held a teleconference with the district collectors and took stock of the arrangements put in place for handling the situation arising out of incessant rains and floods in the state over the past few days.

He asked the collectors to be on high alert as there were indications that the rains were likely to continue for a few more days. He asked all the officials to remain in headquarters, work in close coordination, and ensure that no loss of lives or property takes place in the state.

He cautioned the district collectors to be very vigilant in respect of tanks across the railway lines as well as with regard to those tanks which are vulnerable and likely to be breached.

Chief Secretary urged the District Collectors to set up around the clock control room in their districts to maintain a close watch. He informed us that a state control room (040-23450624) is also set up and operationalized immediately.

Will continue to demand special category status: Andhra CM

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Saturday asserted that he would continue to demand a special category status for the state from the Centre, as was promised by it in Parliament, and also defended the three-capitals move.

Speaking at the 74th Independence Day celebrations here, he said that though the Modi government was not dependant on other political parties for survival, he was determined to get the special category status.

“We will continue to demand from the Centre to grant special category status with the confidence that if not now, at least in the future it will have a change of heart,” he said.

The Chief Minister hoisted the national flag and reviewed a colorful parade at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here.

Jagan Mohan Reddy, in his speech, defended the move to have three state capitals, saying the government was working towards “decentralization” to ensure the development of all regions in Andhra Pradesh.

He said that his government had initiated the process of decentralization after realizing that only by ensuring equal development of all three regions, Andhra Pradesh could avoid the wounds of bifurcation in the future.

He said that two Bills were made into Acts to develop three capitals for equitable development. “Very soon we will lay the foundation stone for Visakhapatnam as the executive capital and Kurnool as the judicial capital,” he said.

Jagan defended his government’s move to develop three capitals amid continuing protest by farmers in Amaravati, who are demanding that Amaravati be retained as the only state capital.

On petitions filed by the farmers, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday extended till August 27 the status quo on three capitals.

The farmers have challenged the Andhra Pradesh Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act, 2020, and the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) Repeat Act, 2020.

Under the Andhra decentralization law, the state government seeks to shift key capital functions from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam and Kurnool.

Jagan listed out the steps taken by his government during the last one year for the all-round development and welfare of all sections of society in the state.

He said that his government was also committed to ensuring social justice. Towards this end, he said, 60 percent representation has been provided to the scheduled castes and tribes, backward classes, minorities, and other weaker sections in the state Cabinet.

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief said that every scheme announced by his government would yield the desired results in 10-15 years. “These schemes are being implemented for a socio-economic transformation of the state and they should not be seen as mere election schemes,” he said.

Jagan also defended his government’s scheme to introduce English as the medium of instruction in government schools. Slamming the critics, he said some people did not want the children of the poor to study in English medium schools.

The Chief Minister took the salute and reviewed the parade. The tableaux of the Health Department highlighting the services rendered during the COVID-19 pandemic was a special attraction on the occasion.

Former Defence Minister A.K. Antony hoisted the national flag at the party headquarters here on Independence Day on Saturday in the absence of Sonia Gandhi as the interim party President is unwell. Former party chief Rahul Gandhi was, however, present during the ceremony.

The party adhered to the social distancing norms due to the coronavirus and only working committee members were present at the event.

Randeep Surjewala, the chief spokesperson of the party, speaking after the function said, “Congratulations and best wishes to 130 crore Indians, today every Indian has to think that what is the meaning of independence, and if our government believes in democracy and people’s mandate… Do they have the freedom to travel anywhere in the country, wear what they want, and eat what they like or there has been a curb on these all.”

“At a time when the government talks about ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ then we’ll have to ask ourselves that the government which has sold 32 PSUs of the country, is it capable of protecting our independence,” Surjewals questioned.

The party’s Delhi unit also hoisted the Tricolour at their office near ITO.

The Delhi Congress had announced on Friday that it will hoist the flag at 272 places in the city.

How jealousy can cement friendships during Covid pandemic

0

Having friends will keep you healthy in the Covid-19 times and if we believe researchers, feelings of jealousy can even be a useful tool to maintain and strengthen your bonding with friends during the pandemic.

Not having friends has been associated with a greater risk of dying from heart disease and with becoming sick from viruses.

A new study from Arizona State University, Oklahoma State University, and Hamilton College found that feelings of jealousy in these times were related to the value of friendship and also motivated behaviors that maintain friendships.

“Friends aren’t just fun. They are an important resource, especially in our current situation with ongoing Covid-19 outbreaks. Friends give support during the conflict, buffer against loneliness, and can even provide life-sustaining resources when we need them,” said Jaimie Arona Krems from Arizona State University (ASU) who is now an assistant professor of psychology at Oklahoma State University.

“We wanted to understand how we keep friendships, and we found feelings of jealousy can act as a tool for maintaining friendships”.

Not all threats to friendships evoked jealousy.

If a best friend moved away, people felt sadness and anger more than jealousy.

But when friendships were threatened by another person – such as a new romantic partner or new friend at work – jealousy was the dominant feeling.

The intensity of jealous feelings varied by how likely the third-party threat was to replace someone in the friendship.

A best friend gaining a romantic partner elicited less jealous feelings than them gaining a potential new friend, revealed the study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

“The third-party threats to friendship were not just related to a best friend spending time away from us: It mattered whether the person they were spending time with could replace us as a friend,” said Douglas Kenrick, President’s Professor of psychology at ASU.

The authors found people felt less jealous about their best friend spending the same amount of time with a new romantic partner than a new acquaintance, “which means what makes us most jealous of is the possibility that we might be replaced”.

Feelings of jealousy over being replaced were associated with behaviors that could overcome the third-party threats, like trying to monopolize a best friend’s time and manipulate their emotions.

“Together, these behaviors are called ‘friend guarding’, and they occur across cultures and also in non-human animals. Female wild horses are known to bite and kick other female horses,” said Keelah Williams, assistant professor of psychology at Hamilton College.

Jealousy also led people to commit to being a better friend.

“Getting jealous can sometimes be a signal that friendship is threatened, and this signal can help us jump into action to invest in a friendship that we might have been neglecting,” said Athena Aktipis, assistant professor of psychology at ASU and author on the paper.

Chinese mainland reports 22 new Covid-19 cases

The Chinese mainland has reported 22 new COVID-cases, taking the overall tally to 84,808, the National Health Commission said on Saturday.

According to the commission, the new cases comprised 14 imported cases and eight locally transmitted ones, reports Xinhua news agency.

Among the locally transmitted cases, seven were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and one in Guangdong province.

One new suspected COVID-19 case, which was imported from outside the mainland, was reported in Shanghai, and no deaths related to the disease were reported on Friday, the commission said.

On Friday, 57 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said.

Of the overall caseload, 655 patients were still being treated, with 36 in severe conditions.

Altogether 79,519 people had been discharged after recovery, and 4,634 had died of the disease on the mainland, the commission said.

There were still three suspected COVID-19 cases on the mainland, it added.

According to the commission, 20,441 close contacts were still under medical observation.

Also on Friday, 20 new asymptomatic cases, including 13 from outside the mainland, were reported, and one asymptomatic case was re-categorized as a confirmed one.

The commission said 318 asymptomatic cases, including 175 from outside the mainland, were still under medical observation.

Pink ball could be used in all Tests, suggests Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes pink ball could be used in all Test cricket in order to avoid play being lost due to bad light.

“It’s a terrible look for the game,” Vaughan was quoted as saying by BBC. “The more I watch this, particularly in England, the pink ball could be the solution – just play with it all the time,” he added.

His remarks came as the second day of the ongoing Test between England and Pakistan was hit by numerous delays before winding up early due to poor lights at the Ageas Bowl. Pakistan was 223/9 when the umpire called for early stumps on Friday. So far, only 86 overs have been bowled in the first two days of the match because of rain and bad light.

“It’s been a summer where I’ve seen the light being taken more than any other summer I can remember,” said Vaughan.

“In a summer where the game desperately needs cricket to be on, it just doesn’t make sense.

“Those that are paid the big cheques for the broadcast have got to step up and say to the ICC ‘this isn’t good enough -you’ve got to come up with a solution that allows the game to be played in conditions like these’,” he added.

“Absolutely! I’ve said the same thing for a long time now! Pink ball for Test matches ASAP, please! Agree on followers?,” tweeted former Australian leg spinner Shane Warne while endorsing Vaughan’s idea.

Pink balls are currently used in day-night Tests with teams continuing to play under floodlights.

Veteran fast bowler James Anderson too called for more “leeway” over bad light decisions rather than play having to stop once the light reaches the previous meter reading.

However, his teammate Stuart Broad said bringing pink-ball in all Test matches would be “an unfair balance to the game”.

“I don’t agree with bringing in a pink ball at all,” Broad said.

“That’s probably going a little bit too far and complicating the situation a little bit too much.

“If the players’ safety is in doubt then the officials have to bring us off. If the players feel safe and the officials feel it is safe then you play,” he added.

The decision to leave the field because of bad light lies with the umpires when they deem it is “dangerous or unreasonable” to proceed.
