3 Covid vax currently in testing phase in India: PM

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said three vaccines are currently under testing phase in India and their mass production will begin as soon as the scientists give the green signal.

As the world inches closer to a Covid-19 vaccine with many vaccine candidates under final trials, the Prime Minister speaking from the rampart of the Red Fort on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day, assured the nation that the fight against the pandemic was progressing in the right direction and at the right place.

The Prime Minister’s assurance came at a time when the number of India’s Covid-19 cases have crossed the 24.50-lakh mark.

“Not only one or two, but there are also three Corona vaccines presently under testing phase in India. As soon as the green signal is received from the scientists, the country’s preparation is also ready for their mass production,” Modi said in his 90-minute address to the nation.

Modi’s announcement came just three days after the first meeting of the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19, a NITI Aayog panel in which the Union Health Ministry has said that the country would leverage domestic vaccine production capacity.

The Prime Minister reminded everyone that there was only one lab for testing in our country when the Coronavirus first appeared in the country and now India has more than 1,400 labs.

The Prime Minister also lauded the efforts of COVID warriors, saying “in this extraordinary time of corona, our doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, ambulance personnel, sweepers, policemen, servicemen, and many other people are working continuously round the clock, regardless of their lives, with a sense of service”.

Modi expressed his condolences to all those people in various parts of the country who have been facing natural calamities and disasters and assured them his full support in their hour of need.

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Saturday unfurled the Tricolour at the Field Marshal Manekshaw parade ground here, marking the 74th Independence Day celebrations in the southern state, with patriotic fervor amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Donning a white safari suit and a face mask, the septuagenarian Yediyurappa inspected the guard of honor standing in an open jeep and going around the parade ground.

He also took salute from the contingents of the three services (Army, Air Force, and Navy), state reserve police, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Home Guards and Bharat Scouts and Guides.

The Chief Minister also addressed the gathering in Kannada, recalling the achievements of his government over the year and how the state was fighting the Covid-19 pandemic since mid-March.

As the public was banned from participating in the function due to COVID-induced restrictions on gathering in large numbers for social distancing, the stands across the ground were empty.

About 500 people, including legislators, some cabinet ministers, defense personnel, and state officials were present on the occasion.

They were all seated 2-feet away from each other to maintain physical distancing.

Unlike in the previous years, the function was low-key and no army helicopter showered rose petals over the parade ground.

March’s past and cultural programs by students of the state-run and civic schools in the city were also not held.

As a special gesture, however, 75 frontline corona warriors and 25 patients who recovered from the infection attended the hour-long function.

The invitees were subjected to thermal screening at the entrance of the venue to ensure they were free from the virus.

According to reports from across Karnataka, district in-charge ministers and deputy commissioners celebrated the Independence Day fete by hoisting the national flag and inspecting the guard of honor in the 29 district headquarters in the state.

Apple, Disney trying to halt WeChat ban in US: Report

0

Several companies including Apple, Ford, Walmart, and Disney have called on US President Donald Trump administration to end an executive order seeking the ban of WeChat and TikTok in the country as it would cause harm to US businesses trying to trade in China.

The US companies wanted clarification over the executive order that would bar “any transaction that is related to WeChat” by Americans, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Apart from the ban order on Chinese short-video-making app TikTok, Trump also issued another similarly-worded executive order against WeChat, a messaging, social media, and electronic payment application owned by the Chinese company Tencent Holdings Ltd.

Tencent said it was “reviewing the executive order to get a full understanding.”

The executive order to ban WeChat from the Apple App Store could lead to a 25-30 percent drop in iPhone shipments in the Chinese market, famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted.

Meanwhile, 95 percent of the 1.2 million Chinese Apple users said that they would rather switch to an Android device than use an iPhone without WeChat.

China, with its population of 1.44 billion people, accounted for about 15 percent of Apple’s total June quarter revenue.

WeChat is a popular Chinese messaging application that is especially successful in China.

Facebook allows small businesses to earn via paid online events

0

Facebook has launched a new ability for businesses, creators, educators, and media publishers to earn money from online events on its platform.

Facebook Page owners can now create an online event, set a price, promote the event, collect a payment, and host the event, all in one place.

Facebook Pages in 20 countries around the world that meet the company’s partner monetization policies can start charging for online events, making it easier for millions of people and small businesses to make money on the social network.

The company said that to support small businesses and creators, it will not collect any fees from paid online events for at least the next year.

“For transactions on the web, and on Android in countries where we have rolled out Facebook Pay, small businesses will keep 100 percent of the revenue they generate from paid online events,” Facebook said in a statement on Friday.

The social network said it asked Apple to reduce its 30 percent App Store tax or allow it to offer Facebook Pay so it could absorb all costs for businesses struggling during Covid-19.

“Unfortunately, they dismissed both our requests and SMBs will only be paid 70 percent of their hard-earned revenue,” said Fidji Simo, Vice President, Head of Facebook App.

Facebook said it was also testing “paid events with Messenger Rooms” for more personal and interactive gatherings.

“In testing, we’ve seen businesses use Facebook to host expert talks, trivia events, podcast recordings, boxing matches, cooking classes, intimate meet-and-greets, fitness classes and more”, the company said.

With social distancing mandates still in place, many businesses and creators are bringing their events and services online to connect with existing customers and reach new ones.

People are also relying on live video and interactive experiences more when they can’t come together physically.

In June, Facebook saw live broadcasts from Pages double compared to the same time last year, largely attributed to broadcasts since March.

By combining marketing, payment, and live video, paid online events to meet the end-to-end needs of businesses.

Pages can host events on Facebook Live to reach broad audiences.

Trump orders ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US biz in 90 days

0

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to direct China-based ByteDance to sell its TikTok business in the US within 90 days.

“There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that ByteDance might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States,” Trump wrote in the order issued on Friday.

The earlier executive order from Trump prohibited the China-based company from doing business with the US firms after 45 days.

TikTok has already threatened legal action against the first executive order.

The new executive order directed ByteDance to “divest any data it obtained from users of TikTok or Musical.ly in the United States”.

It also authorized US officials to inspect TikTok and ByteDance to ensure the safety of personal data of nearly 80 million American users of the short video making app.

The earlier executive orders were issued amid discussion by Microsoft to purchase the US business of TikTok by September 15.

Microsoft revealed its intention to purchase TikTok’s US business following a discussion between the company’s CEO and the US President.

However, reports surfaced that the Microsoft-TikTok deal may not happen as odds of the deal are “not higher than 20 percent”.

The probability of Microsoft buying TikTok is “not higher than 20 percent” since the initial price offered by the US software giant was akin to “robbing the owner when his house is on fire”, reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Armaan Malik: Didn’t use family name to further my career

Armaan Malik hails from a musical family but was always clear that he wanted to establish his identity, with no strings attached. The singer says he wanted to make it on his own mettle and not use his family name to further his career.

“I’ve had a very clear vision of establishing my unique identity since the beginning of my career,” Armaan told IANS while talking about how he has evolved as a singer.

“When you belong to a family steeped in musical excellence, everyone around you expects you to follow the same path and obviously have everything laid out for you along the way. But I knew I wanted to make it on my own mettle and not use my family name to further my career,” he added.

Armaan is the son of music composer Daboo Malik and nephew of Anu Malik. He is the brother of composer Amaal Mallik.

“At the age of nine, I even submitted an audition for the popular Indian singing reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs with only my first name — Armaan. I made it to the top 10 of the show. I only did this because I wanted to know deep inside that I could chart my own journey the way I wanted to and not be looked at differently just because of my famous musical family,” he added.

The “Bol do na Zara” hitmaker continued: “The journey after the reality show was exciting. I started singing for a lot of advertisement jingles and voice-overs for various famous brands in different Indian languages. Through this process, I interacted with some really talented composers and music producers, who later on went on to give me my Bollywood playback- breaks in films like ‘Bhootnath’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ (as a child singer).”

“For about four years, I was singing for almost all the children’s movies that were being made in the industry, and then a few years down the line when I was 18, I started my proper career as a full-fledged playback singer,” he recalled.

“With each passing song, my audience grew. I was being recognized on various platforms. Even though Bollywood is the centerpiece of the Indian music industry, I started doing non-film music that featured me in the music videos and through this parallel process, people not only knew my voice but also got acquainted with the face and my persona as an artist,” added the singer, who is also a part of Vh1 Sound Nation League 2020.

Armaan’s popular numbers include “Tu hawa”, “Naina”, “Main hoon hero tera”, “Hua hain aaj pehli baar”, “Sau aasmaan”, “Dil mein tum ho” among others. The singer says his “ultimate ambition is to make India proud on a global stage”.

“With my two international releases ‘Control’ and ‘next 2 me’, I feel I am one step closer to realizing this dream. My English-singing career is not just about one or two tracks, its a journey. Eventually, I will release an EP or put out an album. Given the scenario we all are facing currently, I’m just taking it as it comes,” he said.

“All my English repertoire is made with an international perspective in mind. My goal with this project is to reach out to global listeners and introduce my music and artistry. Honestly, a lot of India’s youth listens to this kind of English music too, so while the song attracts listeners worldwide, it’s not going to alienate any listener here either,” he summed up.

Armaan stressed that “all these years” he has been trying to define success and make an image of it in his head, “but it is next to impossible to define it”.

“Having said that, I feel if you can manage and strike a balance between your personal and professional life, that’s success to me,” said the singer.

Indian cricket guidelines – ‘age is just a number’ (Column: Close-in)

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come out with guidelines as to how cricket will operate at this time of COVID-19 pandemic. This is essential as the safety of the players and the people involved in cricket needs to be foremost protected.

The world is reeling under the spread of this unexpected virus attack and the uncertainty of being able to deal has put a threat to all. “The show must go on” and therefore cricket as a sport has taken the plunge to get back on track.

England, by creating a bio-bubble and isolating teams from the outside world, so as to greatly minimize the risk of getting an infection, proved that it could be done successfully. This has been a huge positive where cricket is concerned as countries around the world now have a template to follow.

Indian cricket finally breathed a sigh of relief as the popular and financially lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) can be played finally. This they plan to do in the UAE as India is still not ready to hold a major tournament given the current circumstances.

The IPL is a very important tournament in world cricket, especially for India. The glamour and glitter that it brings along with the cricket uncertainties is a script that is unique as every match creates an excitement similar to what one feels when reading a murder mystery. This is what makes T20, the shortest official format of the game, so absorbing.

The BCCI will have a major challenge in ensuring that the 53-day tournament goes through without any blemish. The only way this will be possible is for all the participants to take responsibility for themselves and follow the rules and regulations to the tee. A single error could burst the bubble and jeopardize the whole tournament.

With eight participating teams, the controls to ensure that nothing goes awry will be a humongous task for each franchise. The IPL has been one event that has always brought out the BCCI with flying colors. One hopes and prays that this edition showcases that India has the capabilities of hosting a major sporting event successfully even in such a difficult time.

BCCI has also in the meanwhile issued very elaborate guidelines for domestic cricket. Each Indian cricket association has been told to follow them. One is a bit skeptical as to how effective it will be implemented. A bio-secure bubble to create around India is a huge challenge. This requires players, support staff as well as all the people involved, to be ensconced in a secured space for two months or more.

The BCCI has announced that they will be only playing two tournaments this season — the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. A domestic cricketer is paid on a match-fee basis and hence many of them will be affected financially. With the reduction in the number of matches, their annual income will be reduced quite drastically. One hopes that the BCCI and the state associations will take this into consideration and compensate them suitably.

However, the U-19 and junior tournaments will be played as usual. This is rather unusual as creating a safe environment for them, especially as they do not stay in five-star comfort like their seniors, would be an enormous task.

The tournament, that one cannot understand as to why it is being omitted this season, is the prestigious Irani Trophy. This is a match between the winner of the Ranji Trophy and the Rest of India. The match is very important for players from the winning Ranji Trophy side, in this case, Saurashtra, because good performance in this encounter could catapult one into the Indian team. The Rest of India side also has players vying for a place in the Indian side. Depriving the Saurashtra players and the rest is definitely unfair.

The Irani Trophy should have been the first match of the season. Most of the players would already have been a part of the IPL whereas the players missing could have been put into a safe bubble at a stipulated venue. This would have been an ideal game for selecting players for the difficult tour that India will be embarking on Down Under against Australia at the end of the year.

The recent guidelines issued by the BCCI also have one more controversial regulation that needs to be enforced. It states that no coaching or support staff can be 60 years or over. Many of the teams have former cricketers as coaches, mentors, and advisors who are above the age stipulated. Some of them have done extremely well for their respective state sides and for them to lose their job just because of the age factor is simply not acceptable.

The age barrier is one area that has been the bone of contention even in the Lodha committee proposed recommendations that were approved by the Supreme Court and inserted into the BCCI Constitution. The BCCI also has put their own age criteria as regards selectors, match referees, fitness coaches, and even administrative staff.

It is rather unfortunate to enforce the age barrier of 60 or 70 years on people who are fit and capable of bringing experience and knowledge and are a valuable asset.

The BCCI cricket administrators like J. Dalmia, N. Srinivasan, and Sharad Pawar and many others have shown the way Indian cricket can flourish off the field even after they have passed their golden age. Arun Lal for Bengal and Karsan Ghavri for Saurashtra, both former cricketers and above the magic age limit, have shown what they can do with their bunch of cricketers on the field. All these stalwarts have proven that it is how one thinks, feels, and behaves that is important and that age as one says “is only a number”.

Dev Patel: My love affair with India started with ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

0

As India celebrates it’s 74th Independence Day on Saturday, Slumdog Millionaire fame Dev Patel recalled how his affair with the country began while shooting for the film here.

“I had been to India a couple of times as a child but my real exposure to the country happened when I shot for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. My love affair with India started while working on the film. I did not understand Indian culture properly while growing up in London. I feel blessed that through ‘Slumdog Millionaire I got the opportunity to witness India’s beauty and its people in a detailed way,” Dev told IANS.

British filmmaker Danny Boyle’s 2008 film, “Slumdog Millionaire”, casts Dev in the title role, recounting the travails of an orphan who grows up in the slums of Mumbai and uses his common sense and general awareness to win the Indian version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” The global hit won eight Oscars and helped Dev earn a name for himself.

“‘Slumdog Millionaire’ changed my life in many ways. There were not many roles for us in the West at that time. I think what it did for me is what it also does for the industry. Winning several Oscars was a big thing. I think there was a tectonic plate that shifted, which was incredible. It gave me exposure to a big world out there and started my obsession with India,” he shared.

Dev, who has shot several films in India since then, is eagerly waiting to shoot again in the country for his next film.

“I was actually in India just before things got really crazy with the coronavirus. I was about to shoot a film in India. I really would love to be in India when the borders open up again and it becomes safe for everyone to travel, especially for the film crew,” he added.

Dev has recently donned the hat of narrator for the National Geographic series “India From Above”, which showcases unique stories from India from an aerial perspective. The two-part series uses drone cameras to let people see the country’s geographical, cultural, technological, and historical aspects from the aerial view.

World No. 116 Rogers stuns Williams to enter Top Seed Open semis

0

World No. 116 Shelby Rogers earned a thunderous upset at the Top Seed Open as she stunned top seed Serena Williams in a thrilling clash to claim a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing Top Seed Open.

In her first-ever meeting with Williams, Rogers fought back from a set down to register a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) win in a match that lasted two hours and seven minutes on Friday. This was her third career victory over a Top 10 player.

“It was important for me going onto the court thinking I could win that match, and knowing I could take care of my service games,” Rogers said, during her post-match press conference as per the WTA website. “Because (Williams) has probably the best service of all time, and when she wants to, she can win a point on her serve.”

“I just tried to control what I could control, and that’s mostly my service games, and then if I had an opportunity, I tried to capitalize,” Rogers added. “I think the few that I did have today, I was able to do that.”

Rogers will now face Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann — who defeated Catherine Bellis 6-2, 6-4 — for a place in the final.

Meanwhile, American teenager Coco Gauff also rallied for a thrilling victory over Ons Jabeur to make it to the final four of the tournament. Trailing 6-4, 4-2 against the No.8 seed and facing a breakpoint for 5-2, Gauff pulled off a thrilling comeback to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in almost two hours. She will now face America’s Jennifer Brady in her last-four clash.

PM Modi’s I-Day message to China: Respect for India’s sovereignty is supreme

0

In the backdrop of recent Galway Valley clash between Indian-Chinese soldiers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of country’s 74th Independence Day on Saturday said the respect for India’s sovereignty is supreme and Indian Army has responded from the LOC to the LAC whoever raised an eye on the sovereignty of the country.

Showing respect to the exemplary courage of Indian soldiers during the face-offs between the troops of the two countries in May-June this year in the Galway Valley in eastern Ladakh, the Prime Minister said Indian Army has responded in the same language.

“Respect for India’s sovereignty is supreme for us. What our brave soldiers can do for this resolution, what the country can do, the world has seen in Ladakh,” Modi said referring to a violent clash in the Galway Valley on June 15 in which as many as 20 Indian soldiers and an unknown number of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) were killed.

In his around 90-minute marathon speech, the Prime Minister said whoever has raised an eye on the sovereignty of the country, India and its Army has responded in the same language from the Line of Control (LoC) to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Modi said India is connecting its relations with its neighbors, whether they are connected to it on land or from the sea, with the partnership of security, development, and trust.

Noting that one-fourth of the world’s population lives in South Asia, the Prime Minister said we can create untold possibilities of development and prosperity of such a large population with cooperation and participation.

“All the leaders of the countries of this region have an important responsibility towards the development and progress of this huge mass group.”

Referring to the present scenario, Modi said the neighbors are not only those who meet our geographical boundaries but also those who meet our hearts. “Where there is harmony in relationships, bonding occurs.”

As much as India’s efforts are for peace and harmony, Modi said the more commitment it has for its security and to make its Army stronger.

“India is also fully equipped for self-sufficiency in defense production,” he added.

74th I-Day: PM unfurls tricolour, addresses nation

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday unfurled the Tricolour at the Red Fort and addressed the nation amid Covid-19 induced new norms after paying tribute at the Raj Ghat on the occasion of 74th Independence Day.

Continuing the tradition of sporting bright-colored turbans for his Independence Day speeches, the Prime Minister chose an off-white saafa with a broad streak of orange for the second I-Day address of his second term.

Modi also extended greetings to the people of the nation. “Happy Independence Day to all fellow Indians. Jai Hind!” tweeted Modi from his official Twitter account.

The Independence Day function, this year, is relatively muted in terms of participation of people in view of the Coronavirus pandemic.

On his arrival at the Lahori Gate of Red Fort, Modi was received by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar.

The Defence Secretary introduced General Officer Commanding (GoC), Delhi Area, Lieutenant General Vijay Kumar Mishra to the Prime Minister.

The GoC then conducted the Saluting Base in the presence of the Prime Minister, where a combined Inter-Services and Police Guards presented the general salute to him. Thereafter, Modi inspected the Guard of Honour.

He then proceeded to the ramparts of the Red Fort where he was greeted by Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff General M.M. Naravane, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria.

On unfurling the National Flag by Modi, the National Guard performed the ‘Rashtriya Salute’ as the Army Grenadiers Regimental Centre Military Band played the National Anthem.

Major Shweta Pandey assisted the Prime Minister in the unfurling of the Tricolour that was synchronized with the 21 Gun Salute fired by the valiant gunners of the elite 2233 Field Battery (Ceremonial).

The National Flag Guard comprising 32 men and one officer each from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police who presented the Rashtriya Salute.

Celebrate an artful Independence Day

0

While physical get-togethers to mark India’s Independence Day may not be possible this year in the light of the pandemic, virtual celebrations seem to pave the way forward, with interactive exhibitions about the history of the National Anthem, the times and influences of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Bharat Ratna awarded musical maestros connecting freedom with their music are just a few clicks away.

Google Arts and Culture is presenting these digital exhibits, in partnership with Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata (a Ministry of Culture museum), Indian Music Experience Museum, Bengaluru, and Museum of Art and Photography, Bengaluru.

Here are some journeys to take virtually on Google Arts and Culture as you remember the freedom struggle and India’s liberation from centuries of colonial rule.

“10 Things to Know About the National Anthem”

This story features snippets of history about the National Anthem of India, like how its origin is from Rabindranath Tagore’s Bengali song ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’, an English translation by him called ‘The Morning Song of India’, the involvement of Subhash Chandra Bose in its selection, and a few inspirations in modern-day.

“Legends of Indian Music and their Memorabilia”
by Indian Music Experience Museum, Bengaluru

The exhibit showcases the quartet of Bharat Ratna awardees, who are associated with India, freedom, and music. M.S. Subbulakshmi was Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite musician and held fund-raisers for the Independence Movement. Ravi Shankar was known for his raga “Mohan Kauns”, conceived as a tribute to Gandhi upon news of his death. Bismillah Khan performed with his shehnai on 15 Aug 1947, in the welcoming of freedom to India. Bhimsen Joshi was the voice of ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’, the iconic 80s audio-visual experience, the core message of which was “unity in diversity”.

“Making the Mahatma”
by Museum of Art & Photography, Bengaluru

Mahatma Gandhi has influenced not just key thinkers and writers with his involvement in the freedom movement, but a plethora of visual imagery that captured his personal and social life. The availability of lithographic presses that helped mass produce images, and cameras allowed to capture a moment as is, inspired the creation of posters, photographic records, artworks, caricatures, and more to be created. Museum of Art and Photography highlights a selection of works, such as Gandhi’s portrait on a map of India, a collage of cutouts depicting his journey from life to death, calendar prints that iconized him, and events and associated personalities from his life envisioned metaphorically in posters.

“Rabindranath Tagore”
by Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, Ministry of Culture

Tagore was the first non-European and first Indian to be awarded a Nobel Prize in 1913. Soon after in 1915, he was honored with a knighthood by the British. However, following the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919, he denounced the knighthood in protest. The Victoria Memorial Hall houses a collection of portrait drawings, photographs including Tagore with Gandhi, and manuscripts of songs and letters written by him, and invites viewers to explore the life of Tagore with this online homage this Independence Day.

Eliud Kipchoge joins ‘Sunfeast India Run As One’ movement

0

Olympic Marathon Champion Eliud Kipchoge, who inspired the world and created history when he broke the two-hour marathon barrier in Vienna last year, will join Procam International’s largest citizen-led movement dedicated to supporting livelihoods – ‘Sunfeast India Run As One’ as the ambassador.

The 30-day movement will kick-start on Saturday while registrations continue till September 11.

35-year-old Kipchoge feels the movement will not only support the marginalized who have been devastated by the economic consequences following the COVID-19 pandemic, but also drive people to lead an active and healthy lifestyle which is the need of the hour.

“India is very close to my heart and I have had the opportunity to witness the warmth and hospitality of this beautiful nation. The idea of helping people through running or walking or jogging is a thoughtful way of engaging people for a good cause. And this is the reason I have joined Sunfeast India Run As One as its ambassador,” said Kipchoge.

“Sunfeast India Run As One is a simple and effective platform for the global community to come together. It is important now more than ever to lead an active lifestyle for a healthy body and mind. I would like to urge you all to take that first step, get moving, and join the movement to make a difference” he added.

Ali Harris Shere, Chief Operating Officer – Biscuits and Cakes Category, Foods Business Division, ITC Limited said, “Kipchoge represents grit, determination and has broken barriers inspiring many. His participation will further encourage people to come forward together and positively impact the lives of many through simple daily activities like walking, running, and jogging.”

Anil Singh, Managing Director, Procam International, stated, “Eliud has broken every sporting barrier, however, it is not just his sporting accolades that define him. He is a humble, simple human being, a global icon, and an inspiration par excellence.”

This new test to diagnose Covid-19 in just 20 minutes

0

In an ongoing fight against the novel coronavirus, the researchers have developed a new test that can diagnose Covid-19 in just 20 minutes.

The findings, published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, show the rapid molecular test called N1-STOP-LAMP, is 100 per cent accurate in diagnosing samples containing SARS-CoV-2 at high loads.

“STOP-LAMP is what’s referred to as a ‘near care’ test, it is not intended to replace the current gold standard PCR testing,” said study lead author Tim Stinear, Professor at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

“It’s a robust diagnostic test for the specific and rapid detection of Covid-19. But it’s important to note however, it trades some detection sensitivity for speed and ease-of-use,” he added.

According to the researchers, the test is highly accurate and easy to use, making it a prime candidate for use in settings with limited testing capabilities.

The method involves using a small portable machine, which can reliably detect SARS-CoV-2 from just one nasal swab.

In the race to control the Covid-19 pandemic, access to rapid, precision diagnostics is key, the research team said.

“We have developed an alternative Covid-19 molecular test that can be readily deployed in settings where access to standard laboratory testing is limited or where ultra-rapid result turnaround times are needed,” said Stiner.

The study revealed that this new test uses only one tube and involves only a single step, making it more efficient and lower cost than many of the current tests for SARS-CoV-2.

The N1-STOP-LAMP method was found to be 100 per cent accurate and correctly identified 87 per cent of tests as positive when used to assess 157 confirmed-positive samples.

The results were fast, with an average time-to-positive of 14 minutes for 93 of those clinical samples.

“We see this kind of technology having a benefit in settings liked aged care facilities or overseas laboratories with limited resources and equipment,” Professor Stinear said.

“The test requires a small shoebox-sized machine, as well as reagents, but everything is portable,” he noted.

Wildfire near LA threatens 5,000 structures

An aggressive wildfire near Los Angeles that has already burnt 10,500 acres with zero percent containment, was threatening more than 5,000 structures, authorities said.

As of Thursday, the fire has already three structures, reports Xinhua news agency.

The blaze, dubbed the Lake Fire, was first reported on Wednesday afternoon in the Angeles National Forest located north of Los Angeles downtown and spread to over 10,000 acres within three hours.

Several structures are threatened by the fire which is growing “with a very rapid rate of speed” and mandatory evacuations are in place, according to the InciWeb, an interstate incident information system.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said on Thursday morning that more than 1,000 firefighters from the Angeles National Forest and other agencies are working together to battle this fire.

Fire officials were quoted by the local CBS news channel as saying that the blaze is unusual since it developed early in the fire season and spread as rapidly as it did without strong winds.

It’s also a history-making event as some of the areas caught fire for the first time since 1968.

“It’s pretty explosive fire behavior,” said Angeles National Forest Fire Chief Robert Garcia.

Lucknow, Aug 14 (Uttar Pradesh) Vijay Mishra, the MLA from Gyanpur in Bhadohi district who was booked on charges of grabbing property and intimidation, was arrested on Friday from Agar in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, an official said.

Bhadohi Superintendent of Police Ram Badan Singh told reporters that Mishra was arrested on a tip-off provided by Bhadohi police to their counterparts in Madhya Pradesh.

The SP said that a police team had been sent to Madhya Pradesh to bring the MLA to Bhadohi on a transit remand.

On August 9, police had said that Vijay Mishra, elected to the Assembly in 2017 on the Nishad Party ticket, his wife Ramlali Mishra, and their son Vishnu Mishra were booked on his relative’s complaint.

It was the second FIR against Mishra within a month. On July 18, he was booked under the Goonda Act for “threatening” a man who bagged a contract for toll collection at the Lalanagar toll plaza on National Highway-2 in Aurai area.

“An FIR naming Mishra, his MLC wife and son was registered by the Gopiganj police under Sections 325, 506, 347, 387 and 449 of the IPC on the complaint of the MLA’s relative Krishna Mohan Tiwari on Friday. On the request of the complainant, who cited threat to his life, we have provided police security to him,” the SP had said.

As many as 71 criminal cases are allegedly lodged against Mishra in various districts of the state. Ten of the cases are being heard in a special MP/MLA court, police sources said.

The MLA’s son Vishnu, however, had told the media that the relative who had complained against them had borrowed Rs 32 crore from his MLA father.

“He had given us cheques for Rs 27 crore, which bounced. In order not to return our money, he lodged a complaint against us,” he alleged.

Trump plans to accept Republican presidential nomination at WH

US President Donald Trump said that he plans to deliver his convention speech while formally accepting the Republican presidential nomination from the White House lawn, according to media reports.

“I’ll probably be giving my speech at the White House because it is a great place. It’s a place that makes me feel good. It makes the country feel good,” Xinhua news agency quoted Trump as saying to the New York Post in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

Earlier this week, he had floated the idea of giving the speech at either the White House or Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, an American Civil War battlefield.

Trump told the New York Post that he would visit Gettysburg at a later date.

“We’d do it possibly outside on one of the lawns. We have various lawns, so we could have it outside,” he said, citing the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as a reason.

Trump’s intent to give the speech at the White House triggered criticism from the Democrats, who said it would be both illegal and unethical for the President to do so.

A federal law known as the Hatch Act generally forbids the use of government property and employees for political activities with some exceptions

“Whether it’s legally wrong or ethically out of the question, it shouldn’t even have been something that was expressed,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

“For the President of the US to degrade once again the White House, as he has done over and over again by saying he’s going to completely politicize it, is something that should be rejected right out of hand,” she added.

The pandemic, which has infected over 5 million people and killed more than 160,000 in the US, has forced the Republican Party to scale back its national convention, scheduled for August 24-27, by moving most of the activities to be held online, while only some in-person business meetings will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Trump scrapped the part of the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida, due to skyrocketing COVID-19 caseloads in the state.

He originally planned to give the acceptance speech there on the last day of the convention.

The President still insisted on having a big crowd of supporters at his speech, telling the New York Post that “it’s very big, a very big lawn. We could have a big group of people”.
