Poet suggests hospital on Ayodhya land, offers his own for mosque

0

Well-known Urdu poet Munawwar Rana has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his willingness to donate his ancestral 5.5-acre land next to river Sai in Rae Bareli, for construction of a grand mosque.

The poet has said that the five-acre land in Dhannipur village sanctioned by the government in lieu of Babri Masjid, should be used for building a hospital in the name of King Dashrath, the father of Lord Ram.

The 69-year-old poet, who had returned his Sahitya Akademi award for Urdu in 2015 over the ‘intolerance’ issue, has also asked the Prime Minister for a new Muslim Waqf Board for protection of Waqf properties.

Talking to reporters, Munawwar Rana said, “Land for the mosque was given in a far-off area in Dhannipur. It is better that instead of igniting more hate between Hindus and Muslims, the Raja Dashrath hospital should be built on the said land.”

He further said, “In any case, mosques are not built on the government land or those usurped by force.”

In his letter, Rana has said that Rae Bareli is a city of historical, cultural, and religious importance.

“It is desirable than that the land in my son Tabrez Rana’s name is given for construction of a grand mosque,” he stated.

Rana was one of the first Muslims to welcome the Supreme Court’s verdict on Ayodhya land dispute case and had then said he is confident that India will move forward towards peace and progress.

He had said, “I salute the verdict. The Babri Masjid had become a political issue but today this matter has come to an end and, I must say, in a very simple and honest way, I am confident that the country will move forward towards peace and progress now.”

Eugenie Bouchard enters second round of Prague Open

0

Wildcard Eugenie Bouchard sailed past eighth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in straight sets to enter the second round of WTA Prague Open.

Bouchard, currently world No. 330, defeated Kudermetova 6-0, 6-3 in 76 minutes on Monday, and registered her first clay win since Gstaad 2018.

“I feel that the first set was tough in almost every game. It’s not like it was a walk in the park,” the former world No. 5 told the official WTA website.

“I’m proud of myself for battling in every single game. It ended up going my way most of the time. I stayed on it every point and didn’t make too many loose errors. I played solid and aggressive, which is what I try to aim for,” she added.

Meanwhile, Kristyna Pliskova, who had already featured at last week’s Palermo Open, was frustrated in her efforts to get past 15-year-old WTA debutant Linda Fruhvirtova.

The match was twice stopped due to a thunderstorm, with the second heavy downpour leading to the suspension of play for the day. The all-Czech first-round match will continue on Tuesday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sent two special secretary-level officials to assist the District Magistrates in controlling the spread of the coronavirus in Kanpur and Lucknow, the cities that have constantly registered a high number of COVID-19 cases daily.

According to an official spokesman, one special secretary-level official will also be appointed in Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, and Bahraich.

On Monday, Lucknow and Kanpur recorded 629 and 269 cases, respectively, while Varanasi registered 148 cases, Prayagraj 223, Gorakhpur 255, Bareilly 197, and Bahraich 70.

As the number of containment zones in the state climbed to 10,350 with 41,490 infected patients, Adityanath underlined the need for increasing the number of beds in Level-2 and Level-3 COVID-19 hospitals which provide the facility for oxygen and ventilators.

As Lucknow is currently recording the highest number of cases in the state, the Chief Minister said that the number of beds should be increased in KGMU, SGPGI, and the RML Hospital, with special instructions to complete a new hospital under KGMU for COVID-19 treatment before the scheduled deadline of October.

Avanish Awasthi, Additional Chief Secretary (Home), said: “The Chief Minister has said that wherever necessary, additional manpower for hospitals should also be hired. COVID-19 hospitals should also be established in all medical colleges and a nodal officer to monitor the arrangements at these hospitals should be appointed by the health education department.”

Adityanath also said that it was crucial to continue with all measures required to break the coronavirus chain and it was also necessary to focus on public awareness programs through television, radio, newspapers, public address systems, posters, and banners.

The police and the local administration have been asked to enforce the rule on wearing masks and maintaining social distancing very strictly.

The Chief Minister has also said that fire safety norms should be followed very strictly in all COVID-19 hospitals.

The fire department has carried out an inspection of several hospitals, both private and government, over the past three days.

The latest figure took the overall tally of COVID-19 infected inmates in jails across the state to 1,379.

The Basti inmates were found positive after the health department teams conducted tests on August 9.

There are around 1,400 inmates currently lodged at Basti district jail.

Chief medical officer, Basti, A.K. Gupta, said on Monday night that preliminary investigations have revealed that an infected person who had gone to distribute medicines, might have led to the spread inside the jail premises.

“All have been isolated inside the prison in separate barracks, while eight others who are older inmates have been shifted to the district hospital,” he said.

Also on Monday, 56 inmates at the Bareilly jail had tested positive for COVID-19.

Is Watching Movies Good for You?

0

Pools of entertainment surround us from all sides. Be it virtual or in-person, our options to have fun are slim to limitless. With the internet’s rise in popularity, recreation has become virtually free of charge.

So, why do we still watch movies? And what are the benefits of spending time at the cinema?

They Boost Imagination

The most obvious advantage of watching movies has to do with your skills to imagine worlds that don’t exist.

You don’t have to be a novelist to want to take a break from this fast-paced world now and then. And movies provide just that – escape, consolation and a haven.

As creativity is a skill of the future, we might as well work on improving it. Whether you’re a writer, painter, clerk or CEO, thinking outside the box is a pivotal ability. Creativity and innovative thinking are what single out even the most ordinary people. Those skills are not the most evident at first glance but come in handy when you most need them.

Famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai said it best, “I’m not coming from film school. I learned cinema in the cinema watching films, so you always have a curiosity. I say, ‘Well, what if I make a film in this genre? What if I make this film like this?’”

Films Teach You to Respect Differences

Speaking of soft skills, movies let us observe others to learn more about ourselves. Sometimes, it gets difficult to understand others and feel like we don’t belong anywhere. Like a horse o a different colour, we also feel misunderstood by others.

When watching a good movie, we can view both sides of the story, allowing us a more rational decision. Helping us decide how to act and what the wisest thing to do next is, movies show us why people act strangely sometimes. In turn, we get to comprehend their motives and intentions.

Looking at opposing sides in a blockbuster can clarify our own life situations. Learning to understand others is another crucial skill useful both in the workplace and at home. Motion pictures are something like a stage upon which our lives are unfurled.

As a conclusion, we’re not all that different as we might think. Films are just a fun way of realising that.

They Can Change Your Life Goals

Moving on, movies can inspire a change in your life. How many times did you catch yourself watching an adventure film and feeling like hopping onto the first plane? Remember Jon Krakauer’s literary piece Into the Wild, which was later directed by Sean Penn? Countless young adults tried to follow the steps of the young adventurer. Movies have that power.

Or let’s take Rocky as an example. In the late 1970s, an enormous increase in young boxers was recorded in the United States and worldwide. The Italian Stallion influenced millions of lanky, feeble boys to muscle up and take up boxing.

The universe of the combat sport has entered the peak popularity in the mainstream culture. The Rocky multi-sequel franchise has impacted other industries, too. In online gaming, for instance, there was a demand for a Rocky video slot. One of the industry’s veterans Playtech manufactured a branded online slot for all lovers of the motion pictures. With similar game developers, you can explore new game themes and even new live games popular in Indian casinos. Many of these are offered for free and for real money. Branded live casino games and especially slots online can even help you grow inspired to work on yourself. Who knows – you might break a world record as Rocky and Apollo did!

Put Things into Perspective

Stitching all of our previous points together, we claim that movies can be life-changing.

A good movie, like a good book, can change your life, in more ways than one.

Realising how others think and combining that knowledge with one’s opinion put things into perspective. Similarly, watching others come to such a realisation helps us do the same in real life.

In existence, we cannot predict what happens next nor can we anticipate others’ reactions. In films, we see the whole narrative, with all the causes and consequences, from beginning to end. Movies teach us patience and perseverance. They tell us that our current struggles will pay off eventually.

Movies Teach You Compassion

Finally, films teach us to emphasise with others. They help us relate to other humans and show us ways to understand them better.

Some people have an innate capability to sympathise with fellow beings. Others are not as fortunate to be born with it. However, they can rely on the pictures to shift their perspective and be more people-loving. Accepting others with their virtues and flaws is a life-long competence.

In 2016, a biopic based on the book A Long Way Home titled Lion, starring Dev Patel was directed by Garth Davis. In it, we are told the real-life story about an Indian boy who gets adopted by a forward-thinking Australian family. His life turns upside-down as he finds a way to his long-lost mother and sister. Every cinephile walks away from the Lion projection in tears.

All in all, movies can dramatically change our stances and attitudes. We should watch films more analytically and critically to absorb their entire purpose. Think of this the next time you have a movie night.

Work on setting up of Delhi smog tower has begun: SC told

0

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a plea to reconsider its decision for setting up of smog tower in Delhi, as a pilot project to combat the menace of air pollution, and the Centre informed the apex court that work on the project has already begun.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra asked the Delhi Chief Secretary to file an affidavit on the present status of 13 pollution hotspots in the national capital and also apprise it on the measures taken to control the pollution level.

A counsel appearing for the petitioner, who filed an intervention application in the matter, contended before the bench that the smog towers will not only lead to money-making by Chinese companies but also has no scientific basis.

Justice Mishra said the arguments have no merit and the court is not willing to recall its order on the construction of smog towers. The bench declined to entertain the plea.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the Centre informed the bench that the University of Minnesota is the licensee sharing the scope of deliverables and scope of the transfer of technology and submitted that a joint affidavit has been filed by the Centre and CPCB.

The IIT Bombay and TATA projects have tied up with the University of Minnesota as it is a patent-protected innovation, added Mehta.

Mehta contended on August 8, site survey work is over, and the collection of soil samples is underway and the geotechnical investigation is going on for the circle design, and this is being done, as it is essential structural stability. “We are on the process of appointing an architect to make site drawing etc,” said Mehta.

The apex court peruses the August 9 affidavit filed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in the case and scheduled the matter for further hearing on Tuesday.

Amazon considering mall space in US for warehouses: Report

0

In a bid to improve the last-mile delivery, Amazon is in discussions with the largest mall owner in the US to convert space left by some of its anchor department stores into distribution hubs for the e-commerce giant, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The talks with the Simon Property Group have revolved around using some of the closed J.C. Penney and Sears stores, said the report on Sunday.

The news comes at a time when Covid-19 has sharpened the focus on disruptions faced by retail companies due to the rise of e-commerce platforms.

As Covid-19 restrictions put strains on retail stores, Amazon reported solid results in the second quarter of this year, registering a 40 percent increase in net sales to $88.9 billion, compared with $63.4 billion in the same period last year.

As the Jeff Bezos-led company focuses on quicker delivery of stuff, having warehouses closer to residential areas would be in line with its delivery strategy, the WSJ noted.

It is, however, not clear how many stores Amazon is considering.

The report, which has not been confirmed by either Amazon or Simon Property Group, noted that it would be quite unusual for Simon to lease space to an e-commerce giant in a mall.

JCPenney in June said it identified 152 stores for closure. The company filed for bankruptcy in May.

Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni most popular cricketers globally: Study

0

India skipper Virat Kohli’s popularity knows no bounds and once again it has been re-affirmed by a study which has revealed that the 31-year-old is the most popular cricketer in the world. Meanwhile, ‘The Men in Blue’ also topped the chart as far as the most popular cricket team in the world is concerned.

According to a SEMrush study, Kohli has searched online an average of 16.2 lakh per month from January to June this year while the Indian cricket team was searched an average of 2.4 lakh times per month in the same time period.

Other cricketers among the top-10, as per the study, were Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, George Mackay, Josh Richards, Hardik Pandya, Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Matthews, and Shreyas Iyer. From January to June 2020, each cricketer, respectively, was searched an average of 9.7, 9.4, 9.1, 7.1, 6.7, 5.4, 4.1, and 3.4 lakh times.

Rohit

With respect to the cricket teams, India led the chart followed by England, Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe. Each cricket team, respectively, was searched .66, .33, .29, .23, .16, .12, .12, .09, .05, .04, and .03 lakh times per month.

In addition, cricket followers across the globe were captivated by women cricketers as well. Despite not being in the top-10, Smriti Mandhana and Ellyse Perry were searched 12th and 20th most times, topping big names like Yuvraj Singh and Shikhar Dhawan.

MS Dhoni

“While we are not entirely surprised by the results of our study, we are excited nonetheless. Finding that Virat Kohli is the most searched cricketer, and India, the most searched cricket team is unsurprising, what’s surprising is that women cricketers are being searched more often than a lot of top-rated men,” Fernando Angulo, Head of Communications, SEMrush SEMrush said.

“Our study suggests that stereotypes of cricket as a man only sport no longer hold. There is considerable enthusiasm about women cricketers and women playing cricket. In the future, there are likely to be many more women playing cricket, and India, as the most important cricket playing nation is likely to supply many of them,” he added.

Oil prices rise as Iraq pledges to cut output

0

Crude oil prices rose on Monday on supply concerns after Iraq said that it will further cut production.

Last week, Iraq said it would cut its oil output by an additional 400,000 barrels per day in August and September to compensate for its overproduction in the past three months. The decision is likely to help the country to comply with its share of cuts with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies.

The October contract of Brent crude on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) is currently trading at $44.87, higher by 1.06 percent from its previous close.

On the demand, hopes of a stimulus package for the US economy has also boosted the market sentiments.

Hopes strengthened regarding the stalled talks between US Democrats and the White House on a new support package for cash-strapped states of the country, hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that they were willing to resume talks on a deal to cover the rest of the year.

Boosted by stimulus hopes, the WTI crude of the US also is trading higher. The September contract of WTI crude on the NYMEX was trading at $41.78, higher by 1.36 percent from its previous close.

Further, Saudi Aramco’s President & CEO Amin H. Nasser’s statement that a partial recovery in the energy market is predicted as economies open up after the COVID-related restrictions and lockdowns also added to the positive sentiments in the oil market.

“We are seeing a partial recovery in the energy market as countries around the world take steps to ease restrictions and reboot their economies,” the CEO said on Sunday.

Amid reconciliation talks, Cong leaders hint at Rahul-Pilot meet

Political circles in Rajasthan were on Monday agog with talks of a likely resolution to the crisis arising out of rebellion by Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Sachin Pilot. Congress sources claimed that the Pilot camp lawmakers will meet Rajya Sabha MP KC Venugopal during the day and even meet with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi thereafter.

The Congress sources said that veteran party leader Ahmed Patel had pitched in to resolve the issue that had threatened the survival of the Ashok Gehlot government after the Pilot camp raised a banner of revolt over the state leadership.

The Congress had sacked Pilot as Deputy Chief Minister and the Rajasthan Congress President. So far, Gehlot has stayed put in the CM chair amid claims and counter-claims on attempts to poach MLAs.

On Sunday night, a Congress Legislature Party meeting was held in a Jaisalmer hotel, where MLAs from the Gehlot camp are lodged. In this meeting, they held mixed views on taking back the rebels into the party fold.

While a few MLAs suggested that the rebel camp leader should be taken back in view of the “wafer-thin margin” of the Gehlot government over the opposition in the Assembly, others were not ready to budge and were not in favor of taking back the Pilot followers.

Meanwhile, the Gehlot camp in Jaisalmer is keeping a wary eye on any development in Delhi vis-a-vis the proposed meeting.

A senior Congress worker confirmed to IANS that a few Ministers from Rajasthan had hinted to the meeting and that the views of party MLAs were sought ahead of the scheduled meeting on reinducting Pilot and his loyalist MLAs.

Ex-President Pranab Mukherjee tests positive for Covid-19

Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said that he has tested positive for coronavirus and asked his contacts to self-isolate and get tested for the virus.

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for Covid-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate and get tested for Covid-19,” the former President said in a tweet.

Soon after veteran Congress leader Mukherjee shared the news, wishes for his speedy recovery started pouring in.

Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party leader Ramvilas Paswan tweeted, “I am worried about the news of former President Pranab Mukherjee ji testing positive for Covid-19. I pray to God for your speedy recovery.”

Former Union minister Milind Deora, Delhi Congress chief Chaudhary Anil Kumar and several other leaders also wished for the speedy recovery of Mukherjee.

The news of the former President testing positive for Covid-19 comes on a day when India reported a spike of 62,064 fresh cases on Monday taking the total tally to 2,215,074. With more than 1,000 fatalities in the last 24 hours, 44,386 people have now lost their lives in the fight against the deadly virus in India.

Typhoon Jangmi makes landfall in S.Korea

0

Typhoon Jangmi, the season’s first, made landfall in South Korea on Monday, keeping the country on alert over possible damages following the deadly downpours that recently battered its central region.

The typhoon landed on the southern tip of Geoje Island near Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang province after forming at seas some 600 km southwest of Okinawa, Japan, on Sunday, reports Yonhap News Agency.

It was forecast to move away from the country toward the East Sea on Monday evening after passing through the coastal area and the port city of Pohang, 374 km southeast of the capital, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Rain fell over most parts of the country on Monday, with heavy downpours in the southern coastal area, Jeju and areas near Mount Jiri.

The KMA has issued a heavy rain advisory for the southeastern and northeastern areas of Seoul.

The typhoon, which means “rose” in Korean, came as the country is going through an unusually long monsoon season this year.

This year’s monsoon season, which began on June 24 in the central region, has shown no signs of slowing, and it is likely to end later than the August 10 record of 1987, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The monsoon season is also expected to set a fresh record as the longest one after a 49-day record in 2013.

TIt has continued for 47 days and is likely to exceed 50 days, as seasonal rain is forecast to extend to mid-August.

The seasonal rain, which has pounded the central region with heavy downpours in August, has left 42 people dead or missing and damaged 14,091 facilities.

Nearly 7,000 have been displaced from their homes.

Russia plans to register 1st Covid vax this week

0

Russia is reportedly going ahead with its plan to register the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine this week before it starts mass vaccination in October, despite safety concerns raised from several quarters, including the WHO.

Russia’s Deputy Health Minister Oleg Gridnev recently revealed plans to register a Covid-19 vaccine on August 12, Sputnik news agency reported. Russia is the fourth worst-hit nation after the US, Brazil, and India.

The vaccine that the country is planning to register this week has been jointly developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry.

On August 3, a “final medical examination” of participants in clinical trials of the vaccine took place at the Burdenko Main Military Clinical Hospital, the Russian Defence Ministry earlier said in a statement.

The results clearly showed that all volunteers had a clear immune response resulting from vaccination, the ministry said, adding that there were no side effects or abnormalities in the work of the volunteers.

“Thus, the available data of laboratory and instrumental studies allow us to speak about the safety and good tolerance of the vaccine,” the statement added.

But this vaccine is not among the six vaccines that have reached the crucial Phase 3 trial, according to the World Health Organization.

Responding to a question on concerns about any vaccine candidate that hits the market in this calendar year, Michael Ryan, Executive Director, WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said that “we will still have to remain cautious”.

“Should we find that signal we should be able to move into production of that vaccine and begin to use it in human populations, but we will still have to remain cautious as we scale up the number of people vaccinated,” Ryan said.

“Side effects are rare, and they only become apparent when you vaccinate lots and lots of people. So there will still be a need for a monitoring phase even when we start to vaccinate at the population level,” he said.

Of the six Covid-19 vaccine candidates that have reached the Phase 3 level according to the WHO, three are from China and the other three, including the ones developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, Moderna, and one jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

“Phase three doesn’t mean nearly there. Phase three means this is the first time that this vaccine is being put into the general population, into otherwise healthy individuals, to see if the vaccine will protect them against natural infection,” Ryan said in the press briefing.

“In fact, it’s the beginning. Up to now all of the studies have been around safety, immunogenicity, and ensuring that the vaccine generates an immune response in a small number of humans, and doesn’t generate adverse events that would prevent the vaccine moving forward into trials,” he added.

Flipkart ‘Leap’ to nurture tech, consumer Internet startups

0

E-commerce marketplace Flipkart on Monday launched its first startup accelerator program to help new and upcoming companies in technology and consumer Internet space to grow, scale and navigate challenges.

Called Flipkart Leap, the program will identify business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) startups and help them scale through an intensive 16-week virtual program, the company said in a statement.

Throughout the program, Flipkart’s leadership from business, operations, product, and technology will mentor the selected startups and share best practices, in addition to master class sessions hosted by industry experts.

The 16-week program, curated in partnership with global management and strategy consulting firm Zinnov, will open opportunities for startups to prepare their innovative solutions to be market-ready and allow them to win an equity-free grant of $25,000 (around Rs 19 lakh).

The startups applying for ‘Flipkart Leap’ should be based out of India and should have a working prototype with early adoption metrics, Flipkart said, adding that the call-for-entries began on Monday.

Post the completion of the program, the final participants will pitch their successful model to investors, corporates, and other ecosystem players on the demo-day and may also be considered for funding by Flipkart.

“With innovations and disruptions in the field of technology coming about each day, we want to be at the forefront of driving scalability and helping these startups bring value to the industry as well as Indian consumers,” said Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Chief Executive Officer, Flipkart Group.

‘Flipkart Leap’ has identified five themes to shortlist relevant high-potential startups.

These include design & make for India; innovation in digital commerce; technologies to empower the retail ecosystem; supply chain management & logistics; and enabling relevant deep tech applications.

The focus is on bringing digitization and tech advancement in these thematic areas, including any startups that will be working on disruptive solutions that have the potential to transform the landscape of e-commerce in the next five years, Flipkart said.

ICC Women’s WC: It was too risky in 2021, says event CEO

0

New Zealand Sports Minister Grant Robertson believes the country could have hosted the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2021.

Last week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had postponed the Women’s World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in New Zealand in 2021, until February-March 2022 because of the impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on cricket globally. The 2021 edition of the men’s T20 World Cup has also been handed to India while the now postponed 2020 edition will be played in Australia in 2022.

“This is obviously a disappointing decision for cricket players and fans around the world and for the White Ferns and their supporters here at home,” Robertson was quoted as saying by nzherald.co.nz.

“The organizing committee in New Zealand has been working with the government to ensure a safe and enjoyable tournament could be played.

“We could have done it in 2021, but now we will look to 2022.

“For the White Ferns, I know this will be a particular disappointment. We will keep working with New Zealand Cricket on how we can support them to provide opportunities for internationals to be played over the coming summer,” he added.

Meanwhile, the tournament’s CEO Andrea Nelson said that the decision to postpone the tournament had nothing to do with New Zealand’s ability to host the event safely.

“It came down to the ability of the teams to qualify,” she told NZME, a local media group.

“We’ve done a lot of contingency planning around this event, to give it the best possible chance of proceeding successfully – ultimately the decision to delay it comes down to cricket. No qualifying tournaments have been able to be held yet, so in order to qualify and then compete in the event in 2021 – it was too risky,” she added.

The ICC has already stated that the format of the postponed World Cup will remain as it was for 2021. Five teams have already qualified for the event and that will stand for 2022. The original global qualification event to determine the final three teams to contest the tournament was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in July 2020, but this was postponed due to COVID-19. The qualification event will now be held in 2021.

With 1,256 new cases, Telangana’s total tally crosses 80K-mark

0

Telangana’s total coronavirus cases crossed the 80,000-mark as 1,256 new cases were reported in the state on Monday, while its death toll climbed up to 637 with 10 more fatalities.

Health officials said the new cases detected during the last 24 hours had taken the total coronavirus infections so far in Telangana to 80,751.

The number of active cases at present is 22,528, including 15,789 patients in the home or institutional isolation. More than 84 percent of those in home isolation are asymptomatic.

The fatality rate in the state stands at 0.78 percent as against a national average of 2.01 percent.

According to a media bulletin released by the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, 53.87 percent of the deceased patients had comorbidities.

The authorities claimed that the number of daily tests conducted in the state was double compared with its target as per World Health Organisation (WHO) benchmark.

A total of 39 testing laboratories and 323 rapid antigen testing centers conducted 11,609 tests as against the target of 5,600. Test results of 1,700 samples were awaited. The state has so far conducted 6,24,840 tests.

Officials said 1,587 more patients have recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative recoveries to 57,586.

Telangana’s recovery rate of 71.31 percent is higher than the national average of 68.78 percent.

Of the new cases, 389 were recorded in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) jurisdiction. Rangareddy and Sangareddy, both bordering GHMC, saw 86 and 74 new cases respectively.

Karimnagar district reported 73 new infections while Adilabad saw a spike with 63 new cases. In Warangal Urban district, 67 more persons tested corona positive. Nalgonda and Siddipet districts reported 58 and 45 new cases respectively.

According to the media bulletin, out of 20,396 beds in government-run hospitals, 17,866 beds are vacant.

While 91 private hospitals treating corona patients have a total of 6,850 beds, 2,641 of them are vacant.

There are 77 containment zones in the GHMC, including 32 in Charminar circle that covers large parts of the old city of Hyderabad.

VR gaming boosts navigational efficiency, spatial memory

Adding to the growing list of studies, a new study has said that individuals playing a virtual reality (VR)-based game can develop higher navigational efficiency and less disorientation than those playing a non-VR immersive desktop version.

The study, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, revealed that navigation in VR can be overwhelming for its users.

“Participants in the VR condition performed better on spatial-based knowledge questions,” said study co-author Egon van den Broek from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

“An interesting use of VR, in addition to education and training, is its use to rehabilitate decreases occurring in navigational abilities and spatial memory in older individuals”.

Spatial memory is a cognitive process that enables a person to remember different locations as well as spatial relations between objects.

According to the team, instead of traditional free movement, node-based movement can be used in virtual reality (VR) games.

In node-based movement systems, players navigate by jumping to set locations and it is similar to hypertext navigation.

In a randomized controlled trial with 25 adolescent participants, an immersive desktop game environment and a VR game environment were compared on the transmission of in-game educational content and navigational efficiency.

The findings showed that the “hypertext lostness” measure is also valuable outside its original hypertext domain – in VR.

The researchers revealed that VR did not improve players’ retention of factual knowledge but did significantly improve players’ spatial knowledge and navigational efficiency.

“We conclude that the ‘hypertext lostness’ measure is also valuable for node-based VR games and VR games add to spatial learning, even when compared with already immersive desktop games,” the authors wrote.

The scientists in general measure “lostness” during a task by identifying disorientation and have been shown to be successful in predicting success in information-seeking tasks in hypertext.

SC decides to hear Prashant Bhushan’s 2009 contempt case

The Supreme Court on Monday said that it will hear in detail whether any comment on corruption against judges tantamount to contempt of court or not, adding that it will hear the 2009 contempt case against lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said that it has decided to hear whether the remarks made by Senior Advocate Prashant Bhushan against the higher judiciary in a Tehelka magazine interview is “per se contempt”.

The top court scheduled the matter for further hearing on August 17.

Last week, the apex court had said it would go on to hear the case if “we do not accept the explanation/apology of Bhushan”.

On August 4, the Supreme Court had said it had not received the apology submitted by Bhushan and reserved its order in the 2009 contempt case against him.

A bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, BR Gavai, and Krishna Murari had said: “We have heard the counsel for the parties at some length. Explanation/apology submitted by Prashant Bhushan/Respondent No. 1 and Tarun Tejpal/Respondent No. 2 has not been received so far.”

The bench added: “In case we do not accept the explanation/apology, we will hear the matter. We reserve the order.”

In an earlier hearing, taking up the 2009 contempt of court case, the apex court observed that there is a “thin line between free speech and contempt”, adding that the issue now is how to save the system’s grace and bring the matter to an end as well.

The bench asked Senior Advocate Rajeev Dhavan, representing Bhushan, to suggest ways to resolve this matter. Justice Mishra had told Dhavan: “Can you suggest some way to avoid this rigmarole? You can resolve it.”

In response, Dhavan had said that Bhushan had already provided an explanation on the matter.
