Human sperm swims in entirely different way than earlier thought

0

In a breakthrough for fertility science, scientists have shattered the universally accepted view of how sperm ‘swim’.

About 300 years ago, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used one of the earliest microscopes to describe human sperm as having a “tail, which, when swimming, lashes with a snakelike movement, like eels in the water”.

This is an optical illusion, according to the new study.

“Human sperm figured out if they roll as they swim, much like playful otters corkscrewing through water, their one-sided stoke would average itself out, and they would swim forwards,” said study author Hermes Gadelha from the University of Bristol in the UK.

“The sperms’ rapid and highly synchronized spinning causes an illusion when seen from above with 2D microscopes – the tail appears to have a side-to-side symmetric movement, like eels in the water, as described by Leeuwenhoek in the 17th century,” Gadelha added.

Using state-of-the-art 3D microscopy and mathematics, the research team have pioneered the reconstruction of the true movement of the sperm tail in 3D.

Using a high-speed camera capable of recording over 55,000 frames in one second, and a microscope stage with a piezoelectric device to move the sample up and down at an incredibly high rate, they were able to scan the sperm swimming freely in 3D.

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, revealed the sperm tail is, in fact, wonky and only wiggles on one side.

While this should mean the sperm’s one-sided stroke would have it swimming in circles, sperm have found a clever way to adapt and swim forwards.

“Our discovery shows sperm has developed a swimming technique to compensate for their lop-sidedness and in doing so have ingeniously solved a mathematical puzzle at a microscopic scale: by creating symmetry out of asymmetry,” said Gadelha.

According to the researchers, the otter-like spinning of human sperm is however complex: the sperm head spins at the same time that the sperm tail rotates around the swimming direction.

This is known in physics as precession, much like when the orbits of Earth and Mars precess around the sun.

This discovery, with its novel use of 3D microscope technology combined with mathematics, may provide fresh hope for unlocking the secrets of human reproduction.

“With over half of infertility caused by male factors, understanding the human sperm tail is fundamental to developing future diagnostic tools to identify unhealthy sperm,” Gadelha noted.

OMCs hold fuel prices, diesel price same for 9th day

0

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) continued to keep automobile fuel prices unchanged on Sunday, with diesel prices across the four metros remaining untouched for the ninth day in a row.

Petrol prices have not changed for over 40 days now in the country.

In the national capital, diesel was priced at Rs 73.56 per liter on Sunday.

Similarly, prices of the transport fuel remained unchanged in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata as well at Rs 80.11, Rs 78.86, and Rs 77.06 per liter respectively.

Petrol prices in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata were Rs 80.43, Rs 87.19, Rs 83.63, and Rs 82.05 per liter respectively, the same since June 29.

This relief from the fuel price hike, however, may not continue for long, as prices may see an uptick in the coming week due to a rise in crude oil prices. Futures of Brent crude is currently trading above $44 per barrel.

“We will observe the price movement for the next couple of days and if oil prices remain firm, a decision may be taken to revise retail product prices again under the daily price revision mechanism,” said an executive of a public sector oil company on the condition of anonymity.

India bans import of 101 defence items to boost indigenisation

0

To make the Indian defense industry self-reliant and boost indigenization, the Ministry of Defence banned the import of 101 items on Sunday.

The MoD has also bifurcated the capital procurement budget for 2020-21 between domestic and foreign capital procurement routes. A separate budget head has been created with an outlay of nearly Rs 52,000 crore for domestic capital procurement in the current financial year.

With the latest embargo on the import of 101 items, it is estimated that contracts worth almost Rs 4 lakh crore will be placed upon the domestic industry within the next five to seven years. Of these, items worth almost Rs 1.3 lakh crore each are anticipated for the Army and the Air Force while items worth almost Rs 1.4 lakh crore are anticipated by the Navy over the same period.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The Ministry of Defence is now ready for a big push to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. MoD will introduce an import embargo on 101 items beyond the given timeline to boost indigenization of defense production.”

The minister pointed out that the decision to ban the import of 101 defense items came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a clarion call for a self-reliant India.

Modi in his address to the nation on May 12 called for a self-reliant India based on the five pillars, i.e., economy, infrastructure, system, demography, and demand, and announced a special economic package for a self-reliant India named ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Taking a cue from that, the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) prepared a list of 101 items for which there would be an embargo on the import beyond the timeline indicated against them.

This is a big step towards self-reliance in defense.

It also offers a great opportunity to the Indian defense industry to rise to the occasion to manufacture the items in the negative list using their own design and development capabilities or by adopting the technologies designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to meet the requirements of the armed forces in the coming years.

“The list was prepared by MoD after several rounds of consultations with all stakeholders, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, DRDO, defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs), Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and private industry to assess current and future capabilities of the Indian industry for manufacturing various ammunition /weapons /platforms /equipment within India,” the MoD said in a statement.

Almost 260 schemes of such items were contracted by the three services at an approximate cost of Rs 3.5 lakh crore between April 2015 and August 2020.

The list of 101 embargoed items comprises of not just simple parts but also some high technology weapon systems like artillery guns, assault rifles, corvettes, sonar systems, transport aircraft, light combat helicopters (LCHs), radars and many other items to fulfill the needs of the defense services.

The list also includes wheeled armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) with indicative import embargo date of December 2021, of which the Army is expected to contract almost 200 at an approximate cost of over Rs 5,000 crore.

Similarly, the Navy is likely to place demands for submarines with an indicative import embargo date of December 2021, of which it expects to contract about six at an approximate cost of almost Rs 42,000 crore.

For the Air Force, it was decided to enlist the LCA MK 1A with an indicative embargo date of December 2020. Of these, 123 are anticipated at an approximate cost of over Rs 85,000 crore.

The embargo on imports is planned to be progressively implemented between 2020 and 2024.

The aim behind the promulgation of the list is to appraise the Indian defense industry about the anticipated requirements of the armed forces so that they are better prepared to realize the goal of indigenization.

The MoD has adopted many progressive measures to encourage and facilitate ‘ease of doing business’ by the defense production entities.

All necessary steps would be taken to ensure that timelines for production of equipment as per the Negative Import List are met, which will include a coordinated mechanism for handholding of the industry by the defense services.

“More such equipment for import embargo would be identified progressively by the DMA in consultation with all stakeholders. A due note of this will also be made in the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) to ensure that no item in the negative list is processed for import in the future,” the ministry said.

Every citizen must fight the Covid war: Experts

0

With the government easing more restrictions under Unlock3.0 to further revive the economy since August 1, the war against the Coronavirus pandemic has to be fought by each and every citizen across the country, according to health experts, including epidemiologists.

“As the war against the elusive virus is going to be long and hard, the government alone cannot fight it, and the onus is on each and every citizen to join the battle even after a vaccine is found to treat it,” Karnataka health task force chairman M.K Sudarshan told IANS here.

By enforcing the lockdown since March 25 and extending it up to May 31 with stringent measures, ostensibly, to contain the virus spread, the government managed to control the situation initially and ensured that the country’s woeful healthcare infrastructure was not overwhelmed by lakhs of positive cases.

“The government, its agencies, and healthcare warriors have been doing their best over the last 4 months, risking their lives to contain the pandemic, as is evident from the case data during the lockdown and after it was gradually lifted to revive socio-economic activities and restore livelihood.

“The onus to carry on the fight is more on all citizens by wearing masks, sanitizing their hands and maintaining social distancing,” asserted Sudarshan, former head of the community medicine department in the state-run KIMS (Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences) hospital in the city center.

The Karnataka government had set up the 6-member committee in mid-April to analyze the Covid-19 data from the southern state and across the country to study the epidemiology of the virus cases, how different patients got infected, what measures for breaking the chain and suggest changes, if required.

Though testing of swab samples to find who got the virus was less and results took longer time due to shortage of diagnostic labs, the stringent lockdown forced most of the people across the country to stay home, wash hands frequently and maintain social distancing at any cost.

“When the lockdown was lifted and unlock 1.0 began on June 1, like a genie coming out of a bottle, thousands of citizens stepped out of houses, violated the norms, and exposed themselves to the infection. With people traveling again in cities and states in their vehicles, buses, cabs and autos, select trains and flights, the number of citizens who tested positive soared by the day, as they too contracted the virus for violating the norms such as failing to isolate, quarantine and get treated if they were asymptomatic or get admitted in any designated hospital if they were symptomatic,” noted epidemiologist Giridhar Babu.

For instance, till the lockdown was in force up to May 31, the southern state with 7 crore population had just 3,221 positive cases, and Bengaluru only 358 cases out of 1.2 crores (120 lakh) people. By June 30, the numbers shot up to 15,242 for state and 4,555 for the city.

“Within a fortnight by July 14, the cases shot up to 44,077 and 20,969, to a whopping 71,069 and 34,943 by July 19 or 5 days during unlocking 2.0 and to a massive 1,64,924 and it is now 69,572 as on August 6 in Unlock 3.0,” Babu recalled.

Babu is also a member of the task force and faculty of the New Delhi-based Public Health Foundation of India.

With hundreds of people returning from most-infected neighboring states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in cars, buses, trains or flights, the number of COVID cases zoomed in the state, especially in this tech hub by the day as they carried the virus-like super spreaders and became a source of local transmission.

“Though a 9-day lockdown was again re-imposed from July 14 to July 22 in this tech city, 4 Sundays in July and night curfew was maintained till July 31, there was no let-up in the cases as they continue to climb, while recoveries also have been going up steadily,” reiterated Babu.

Admitting that lockdowns, shutdowns and night curfew do not reduce the cases but only delay them, noted pediatric cardiologist Vijayalakshmi I. Balekundri told IANS that the only way to be safe from the dreadful pandemic was to do “SMS” (sanitization of hands, mask-wearing, and social distancing) as coronavirus was a communicable disease and fatal as it attacks the respiratory system (lungs) and affects all other vital organs of the body.

“The onus of winning the war against the pandemic is more on 130-crore+ citizens than anyone else across the country. God helps those who help themselves is an old adage, as each has to take care of himself or herself from being infected by the virus till a vaccine is found because it is preventable but not curable,” Balekundri said.

The Bengaluru Medical College and Research Institute Emeritus Professor said though all five fingers are not the same or equal, they become a force as a fist when together and converge themselves into a weapon.

“Similarly, the thumb is for a mask, index finger for washing hands, middle finger for social distancing, ring finger for maintaining toilet hygiene and little finger to avoid traveling to the extent possible or unless warranted,” Balekundri added.

ED grills Rhea’s brother; both to be quizzed again on Monday

Continuing its probe in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has grilled Showik Chakraborty, brother of actress Rhea Chakraborty, for the second time in connection with their financial transactions.

Showik, who went to the ED office around noon on Saturday, was seen leaving after more than 18 hours around 7 am on Sunday.

According to officials, he has reportedly given “evasive or unconvincing replies” to the ED team quizzing him and is likely to be summoned again on Monday.

Besides, Rhea Chakraborty will also be summoned by the ED for another round of questioning on Monday. She had first been questioned for over eight hours on Friday.

Among other things, the ED is investigating the money-laundering angle in the Sushant case after the late actor’s father Krishna Kishore Singh lodged a complaint with Patna Police to question certain financial matters pertaining to his son.

On June 14, Sushant’s body was found hanging at his Bandra flat in what was termed a suicide, sparking a huge uproar in Bollywood and political circles.

13 more Covid deaths, 1,734 new cases in Odisha

0

As many as 1,734 new coronavirus cases were reported along with 13 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours in Odisha, taking its case tally to 45,927 and death toll due to the disease to 272, the Health Department said on Sunday.

Six new deaths were reported in Ganjam district, two in Koraput district and one each in Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Bargarh, and Nayagarh district.

The number of active corona cases in the state now is 15,365 since 30,241 patients have recovered so far.

Khordha district reported the highest 342 new cases, followed by Ganjam (222), Cuttack (177), Sundargarh (126), and Nayagarh (106).

Microsoft set to leverage cloud dominance in console war with Sony

0

With foraying into Cloud-based gaming, Microsoft is racing ahead against its rivals, especially Sony, when it comes to console war.

Microsoft is all set to launch its much-anticipated game streaming service called xCloud on September 15 for Android users in 22 countries.

Sony PlayStation5 (PS5) is expected to release this holiday season. Sony has so far unveiled a logo for the console, the PS5 gamepad, and a tech demo showing the console’s graphics capability.

According to Loup Ventures, a research-driven venture capital firm based in the US, Microsoft is determined to build on its already massive gaming platform in the face of growing competition from Google and Amazon.

“For the upcoming launch, Microsoft can leverage its cloud business to subsidize the hardware cost to gamers, something Sony isn’t able to do,” the firm said in its latest research note.

Microsoft will launch all Xbox Game Studios titles into Xbox Game Pass which is a significant move.

The inclusion of all Xbox Game Studios titles into its Game Pass program is a strong incentive for users to subscribe. Popular titles such as Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport will be available on a subscription basis.

Any new games released in the next few years will be available on both the Xbox One and the upcoming Series X.

“While a price point hasn’t been announced for the Series X yet, we anticipate the console’s pricing to be favorable to gamers. The company may hold out as long as possible before sharing a price as they’ll want to match or undercut Sony’s PlayStation 5 pricing,” the research note said.

With the last generation of consoles, Microsoft struggled with consumers due to its $100 higher price point.

During the last console launch (Xbox One), users were led to believe their consoles had to be connected to the internet to work, they were forced to purchase a Kinect sensor with their console, and platform exclusives were the focus.

“Today, the focus is where it should be, on the gamer”.

The xCloud gaming will be bundled as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription for $14.99 per month, with more than 100 games available on Android tablets and phones.

Once the service is available, one would be able to use existing Xbox One controllers, and PlayStation’s DualShock 4 is also supported, according to Microsoft.

Nokia 5310 (2020): Nostalgia is back for die-hard fans

0

HMD Global-owned Nokia brand has brought back the nostalgia-filled feature phone ‘Nokia 5310′ in a new avatar for its Indian fans.

Reimagining the original Nokia ‘5310 Xpress Music’ which was launched in 2007, the ‘Nokia 5310′ brings with it an MP3 player and FM radio (which can be played wired or wireless), combined with powerful dual front-facing speakers.

The Nokia 5310 price in India has been set at Rs 3,399. The phone will be available in black/red and white/red color options.

Here is what this new feature phone offers as smartphones take over our lives.

Nokia 5310 is for those who love streaming music. The phone has dedicated music buttons on either side of the display to let you control the volume and the audio playback functions.

One of the highlights is ‘FM Radio’ which is capable of running without a headset, unlike the other phones.

The feature phone comes with an updated design as compared to the original handset.

The new Nokia 5310 has a rounded design and a curved display glass. It has a numeric keypad, with a five-way navigation key.

The bottom of the phone is clean and has a small slit near the back cover to access the battery and SIM section.

At the top of the phone a 3.5mm jack and Micro USB port for charging and data transfer.

At the back, the phone features Nokia branding in the middle and a camera with flash above.

The device comes with a 2.4-inch (320 x 240 pixels) QVGA display and is bright enough.

The typing keys on the phone are decent and responsive and did not show any issues.

The new 5310 has a 0.4MP VGA camera, which is actually a step down from the 2MP camera present on the original 5310 XpressMusic.

The camera is just a showpiece and captures barely usable pictures.

The device is powered by MediaTek MT6260A coupled with 8MB along with 16MB internal storage. Its storage can be expanded to 32GB using a microSD card.

On the software front, the Nokia 5310 runs the very old Symbian Series 30+, which made its first appearance in 2014.

Nokia 5310 has a removable battery of 1,200mAh which the company claims that it could last for 20-25 days with a single full charge.

During the review, the battery lasted for more than a week.

Conclusion: No doubt, Nokia 5310 (2020) is a good choice for someone planning to buy a decent feature phone.

However, when compared to the JioPhone which is comparatively cheaper (plus it supports LTE and sports a 2MP rear camera), the new Nokia 5310 falls behind.

Captain missed a trick: Akram on Pakistan’s defeat in Manchester

0

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram feels current skipper Azhar Ali missed a trick during the team’s defeat in the first Test of the series against England at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler led the hosts to a thrilling three-wicket win over Pakistan on Saturday. Woakes joined Buttler in the middle when England was struggling at 117/5, chasing a target of 277.

The pair then smashed 139 runs for the seventh wicket and as Buttler eventually departed on 75 off 101 balls, Woakes saw them over the line and was unbeaten on 84 off 120.

Following the defeat, Akram pointed fingers at Pakistan’s strategy and said they didn’t trouble Woakes much and he took the game away from them.

“It will hurt the Pakistan team and the cricket lovers in Pakistan,” Akram was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“Winning and losing is part of cricket, but I think our captain missed a trick quite a few times in this game, as far as his leadership is concerned.

“When Woakes came in, there were no bouncers, no short deliveries, they let him settle down and runs were coming easy,” he added

“Once the partnership got going, nothing happened – the turn didn’t happen, swing didn’t happen – and Buttler and Woakes just took the game away.”

England now leads the three-Test series 1-0 and the final two matches are scheduled to be played at Ageas Bowl in Southampton from August 13 and August 21 respectively.

‘Ishq Mein Marjawan 2’ newcomer Manasvi Vashist: Nothing is easy

Manasvi Vashist quit a corporate career to take up acting, which is something he always wanted to do.

The newcomer actor is currently seen as Aryan in the TV show, “Ishq Mein Marjawan 2”.

“I always wanted to be an actor, but somehow I lacked the courage to quit my corporate career to struggle becoming an actor, though it was my sheer luck that someone spotted me on social media and I just took the opportunity without thinking anything, and things fell into place magically,” Manasvi said, on how he bagged his first show.

Being a newbie, Manasvi has his share of struggles and challenges.

“Nothing is easy. I’d rather say that becoming an actor isn’t the tough part, but getting a prominent role could be. The most challenging part for anyone, undoubtedly, is the abundance of talent in the industry, and nepotism,” he said.

“Although I got the role without having to struggle much, the hardest part undoubtedly has been to live up to the expectations, and bring Aryan’s character to life,” he added, about his debut act.

Here’s why ‘Justice for Sushant’ will benefit BJP in Bihar polls

Sushant Singh Rajput had a caste and that is all that matters in the current socio-political milieu of Bihar where, in spite of being just 4 percent of the total population, Rajputs are a dominant and influential community that can swing elections and the deceased actor belonged to that very community.

Since the actor’s mysterious death, BJP MP Rupa Ganguly has tweeted at least one hundred tweets with the hashtag ‘CBI for Sushant’. From Tejaswi Yadav of RJD, a pre-reservation party founded by his father and ex-Chief Minister Lalu Prasad, to the ruling JD-U’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, everyone has paid a token visit to Sushant’s home here, if not for anything else, at least to be seen to be standing with the ’cause’.

Even Chirag Paswan, chief of Lok Janshakti Party, a political outfit traditionally practicing the politics of the backward castes in Bihar, vehemently and animatedly demanded that the probe be handed over to the CBI.

The question is why is Sushant’s caste so important in a state where it constitutes barely 4 percent of the population?

In today’s Bihar, as opposed to the 1990s, the upper castes form a block. In the mid-nineties, militias like Ranvir Sena propped up to ‘safeguard’ interests of the Bhumihars, an upper-caste landowning community against the Rajputs, another upper caste community. They both fought each other and also against the Dalits.

However, with the rising ‘Mandal’ politics of Lalu Prasad, the two warring communities now see the benefit by sticking together and flaunting a collective heft in Bihar’s Assembly and governance alike.

Politics is less about facts and more about emotions. And what better emotion than one’s lineage in the impending Assembly polls in India’s most caste-sensitive state?

Many Bollywood insiders have stated how, as a Rajput himself, Sushant was ashamed at the attack on the ‘Padmavaat’ movie set by the Karni Sena, a fringe outfit of Rajputs. So much so, he is even said to have dropped ‘Rajput’ as his surname ever since. But that’s all in the past.

Today, in Bihar’s political amphitheater, there is the no bigger face of Rajputs than Sushant, who has allegedly been wronged by a system called Bollywood.

To gauge the political might of the Rajputs, a relative minority in Bihar’s caste kaleidoscope, one simply needs to revisit the ticket distribution of the 2015 Assembly polls. BJP had fielded 65 upper caste candidates that year, out of which 30 were Rajputs. The ‘Mahagathbandhan’, comprising the JD-U, RJD, and Congress, was banking on the Muslim-Yadav combine, and it too had to field 39 upper caste candidates. 12 of them were Rajputs.

So much so, even the RJD, a party that came to power and kept getting re-elected on the plank of social justice to the marginalized, had to bite the bullet last year when it elected Jagdanand Singh – a Rajput – as its Bihar unit president.

In a span of weeks, two Chief Ministers have met Sushant’s father – Bihar’s Nitish Kumar and Haryana’s Manohar Lal Khattar. Union Law Minister and a fellow Bihari Ravi Shankar Prasad was one of the first to visit his father in Patna. BJP MP Manoj Tiwary, one of the most popular Bhojpuri singers and an influential figure in Bihar and eastern UP, too paid a visit to the late actor’s home and demanded the case be handed over to the CBI. All these visits carry a message — ‘Bihari Asmita’ won’t be compromised and ‘we stand with the Rajputs’.

While everyone wants a political pie of this 24/7 media commentary over Sushant, in an almost certain BJP-JDU pre-poll alliance, only these two parties are likely to benefit from the posturing. Lalu Prasad’s 15-year rule that belittled, if not decimated, Bihar’s upper-caste dominance, had risen to power in the 1990s by brazenly challenging the supremacy of the upper castes and thus very finely consolidating the votes of the lower castes. The common refrain of Lalu Prasad was the politics of ‘izzat’ or respect.

Decades later, all upper castes – Brahmin, Bhumihar, Rajput – have come together en block and see this fight for ‘justice for Sushant’ as their own existential battle for dominance in Bihar, which the BJP and its allies are more certain to exploit electorally than parties that had swept to power challenging that very dominance decades ago.

India may be moving away from Covid-19 exponential rise: Niti Aayog member (Ld)

0

Currently, India is experiencing the worst phase in its fight against Covid-19 with a total of 64,399 new coronavirus cases getting reported in the last 24 hours, taking the overall caseload to 21,53,011, while the death toll mounting to 43,379 with 861 fresh fatalities.

But there may be a silver lining, as V.K. Paul, Member of Niti Aayog, said that the last five-day daily case data indicate that India may be moving away from the exponential rise.

Speaking at a webinar organized by the India International Centre on the topic towards a holistic long term medicare system — the case of Covid-19 — Paul, citing the day-wise daily new cases data, said, “If we look at the five-day moving average, we could see some kind of stabilization; I do not know whether it is true or random, that only time will tell. Maybe, there is something out there, which is indicating that we may have moved away from the exponential rise and we may be stabilizing. But that only time will tell.”

Paul said that the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic was in the most populous cities, in the western half of the nation, where the pandemic originated. It seems now that the pandemic in this part of the country is now reaching some kind of peak. “As we have seen in the context of Delhi,” he added

Paul said, “We still have large swathes of our geography and large swathes of our population, which are naive to this virus?.the virus loves people, the virus loves dense places, the virus loves irresponsible citizens who do not look after their respiratory secretions and do not maintain physical distance.”

Citing the data on cases per million, he added that India has 1466 cases per million, and the world average, into the 7th month of the pandemic, is around 2500 per million. Paul said the disease load is modest and warned people not to be complacent if cases begin to decline. “The trailer is over I think, but we are still before the interval,” he added.

He insisted that mortality rates in India continue to be low and in terms of response, home-based isolation protocols have succeeded. “Deaths will be imprinted in pages of history, how many deaths happened in this pandemic in a given nation?. Need to keep a sharp eye number of deaths? In the case fatality rate, India is currently at 2.06?.some states have below 1 percent case fatality rate. The highest we have seen for a state is 6 percent or little above 6 percent?” said Paul.

He insisted that in India the mortality burden so far has been on the lower side. “We like to keep our case fatality rate below 1 percent?.and it is possible,” he added.

Chhetri all praise for Messi after wonder goal against Napoli

0

India captain Sunil Chhetri was all praise for Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi after the Argentine turned it on once again in the UEFA Champions League to help his side stroll past Napoli in their Round of 16 fixture.

“Messi,” tweeted Chhetri with three folded hands emojis right after the Barcelona captain scored an outrageous goal in the 23rd minute to make it 3-1 in his team’s favor. “Stayed late after ages to watch live football – completely worth,” he tweeted later.

The second leg that was played at Camp Nou started at 1-1 with Barca having the away goal advantage. Defender Clement Lenglet took advantage of some poor marking to head in from Ivan Rakitic’s corner and gave Barcelona the outright lead.

Messi in the 23rd minute got the ball in the right-hand corner of Napoli’s penalty area, wriggled past three defenders, and then lost his balance for a moment. He however picked himself up and managed to curl the ball into the far corner. He doubled their lead seven minutes later but the goal was disallowed by VAR.

Luis Suarez made it 3-1 on the night with a penalty while Lorenzo Insigne pulled one back for Napoli with another penalty. Both goals came in stoppage time of the first half as the second half was goalless.

iPhone 12 series may support China’s BeiDou navigation system

0

New Apple iPhones may support a China-based BeiDou navigation system in the global market, a new report has claimed.

The BeiDou navigation system covers over 200 countries, with more than 100 million users and 200 million daily sessions.

BeiDou spokesperson and director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, Ran Chengqi, mentioned this week that “Apple will use the BeiDou navigation system sooner or later,” reports GSMArena.

Current iPhones lack official support for the BeiDou navigation system but the situation is likely to get changed with the introduction of the iPhone 12 series.

“BeiDou-capable devices and especially smartphones have long been the norm on the local market and across most of the Asia-Pacific region, where the BeiDou system has the best performance,” said the report.

BeiDou-capable products are also already being exported and used in over 120 countries and regions around the world.

Apple is expected to launch four new iPhones under the iPhone 12 series which would include two premium variants, and presently it is not clear which model will come with this technology.

All four iPhone models are expected to feature OLED displays and 5G support

Twitter had talks about a ‘combination’ with TikTok: Report

0

Twitter discussed a “potential combination” with China-based TikTok, currently facing immense political heat in the US, a new report has claimed.

According to a Wall Street Journal report citing people familiar with the matter, “Twitter Inc. has had preliminary talks about a potential combination with TikTok”.

“It is unclear whether Twitter will pursue a deal with TikTok, which would face significant challenges,” the report claimed on Saturday.

While Twitter declined to comment, a TikTok spokesperson told The Verge “the company does not comment on market rumors”.

President Donald Trump issued two executive orders last week prohibiting transactions in the country with the Chinese companies that own WeChat and TikTok.

Bytedance is the parent company of the Chinese app TikTok that has nearly 80 million users in the US.

TikTok on Friday threatened legal action against the executive order that prohibits the China-based company from doing business with the US firms after 45 days.

TikTok said it was “shocked” by the recent executive order, which it said, “was issued without any due process.”

In the executive order “addressing the threat posed by TikTok”, Trump said the spread in the US of mobile applications developed and owned by Chinese companies “continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”

“At this time, action must be taken to address the threat posed by one mobile application, in particular, TikTok,” said the order.

Officials of the Trump administration earlier alleged that the Chinese government could have access to TikTok’s user data.

The orders were issued amid discussion by Microsoft to purchase the US business of TikTok by September 15.

Microsoft revealed its intention to purchase TikTok’s US business following a discussion between the company’s CEO and the US President.

Apple last week clarified that it is not interested in acquiring TikTok after some reports surfaced, saying the iPhone maker was willing to buy the China-based app.

Ask for 4 weeks’ time to reply to Sports Ministry’s questions: IOA to NSFs

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) suggested that National Sports Federations (NSF) ask for four more weeks’ time to reply to a questionnaire that they have been asked to fill by the Sports Ministry.

The ministry asked 57 NSFs that currently don’t have central recognition to fill the questionnaire so it can respond to petitioner Rahul Mehra’s argument that none of them are compliant with the 2011 National Sports Code in the Delhi High Court.

In an internal communication signed by IOA President Narinder Batra and Secretary General Rajeev Mehta on Saturday, the pair said that the ministry has asked for a reply on the questionnaire by August 11.

“As you are aware that the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has asked NSFs to reply to a questionnaire sent by them by 11th August 2020,” said the pair in the communication.

“This is a sensitive issue and we all need to take a united stand as many issues raised in the questionnaire are not part of the sports code.

“This is now an ongoing issue in Delhi High Court and we need to be careful.

“We suggest that immediately all NSFs ask for 4 weeks’ time to reply since most NSFs’ office staff are not on duty due to COVID.

“Meanwhile the President and Secretary-General are meeting on Monday 10th August to discuss this issue and will seek time to meet with the Hon’ble Minister and Secretary Sports.”

Earlier, the Delhi High Court turned down the petition moved by the Sports Ministry seeking modification of its February 7 order which had barred the Centre and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) from taking any decision on NSFs without informing it.

In accordance with the order, the ministry in June had to revoke the provisional recognition it had provided to NSFs on May 11. Among the repercussions of this development was the Sports Authority of India (SAI) having to take over the responsibility of arranging national camps for different sports.

Experts call for vitamins, minerals rich diet to fight against Covid-19

During a session held at the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), the health experts stressed the need for inclusion of vitamins and minerals in daily diet to build immunity for the battle against the COVID-19.

The present pandemic has brought the focus back on the role of vitamins as part of nutrition going beyond popular proteins and carbohydrates, they said on Saturday.

The experts weighed in that traditional Indian foods and natural herbs are a potent combination to avert threat from the deadly virus.

“There are several foods that are rich in natural minerals and nutrients, but we destroy their nutritional value in the course of our cooking and consumption practices. Wheat, which in its original form is Dalia, it has important minerals like phosphorus. Still, in our strange wisdom we powder it into a refined maida which is nothing but starch and increases weight and risk of diabetes,” said Dr. Shikha Sharma, founder and managing director of Dr Shikha’s NutriHealth.

Dr Sharma named traditional food items and Ayurvedic herbs that can increase immunity level in the body.

“Barley, Channa, Sattu, seeds – pumpkin, sunflower, chia, and flax among others that can be included in diets for a nutrition boost across all age groups. Ashwagandha and Giloy are potent herbs that can be given to both seniors and children. They purify the blood, build the body’s immunity, reduce stress, and keep intact, healthy pH level in the body,” she added.

The session was held while concluding the second edition of the ‘Illness to Wellness’ series themed ‘Building immunity through nutritious food during COVID-19’ by ASSOCHAM.

The experts also dismissed the need for a protein or carbohydrate-rich diet, instead advocated for a wholesome, balanced diet especially in times of Corona.

“The beauty of Indian traditions during COVID times is that we need the support of this amazing knowledge of Indian Ayurveda and traditions to beat it,” Dr Sharma said.

The coronavirus has individually turned fatal for individuals with existing comorbidities, for such cases, Dr Sharma emphasised that the first course of action needs to address the health issues through long-term preventive measures such as exercising, avoiding sugar and a maintaining a balanced diet.

Meanwhile, Sangeeta Narayan, nutrition educator and wellness expert, commenting on the impact of proper diet on the mental health said, “Stress plays an essential part in mental health considering the current times. With everything changing, we have to be adaptive. The first and foremost thing is to have a proper 6-8 hour sleep, plan your day in advance, doing all the chores can be overwhelming so allocate tasks for each day whether living with a family or alone. Add fruits or food items rich in Vitamin C. They act as a stress buster and immunity booster. Having proper meals is important, especially a nutritious and nourishing breakfast. Exercising also plays a vital role in managing stress and keeping the mind clear.”

Besides, the experts also commented on other aspects that have been impacted after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anil Rajput, Chairman, ASSOCHAM CSR Council, weighing in on the economic and personal effect of coronavirus, said, “COVID-19 has had a destabilizing effect on almost all walks of life for almost five months now. Right now, from nations to societies to economies to the health of individuals, it has been an extremely stressful period for all. It has forced on us an unprecedented situation. One has taken quite a bit of time for us to understand the magnitude and painful reality of how slow the recovery is likely to be. It is the individual who has been at the center of all-round anxiety and insecurity be at economic or personal health front.”
