UP MLA, wife, son booked for grabbing house, threats

Gyanpur MLA Vijay Mishra, his wife Ramlali Mishra, and their son Vishnu Mishra have been booked by the district police on charges of grabbing property and intimidation on his relative’s complaint.

It is the second FIR against Mishra within a month. On July 18, he was booked under the Goonda Act for “threatening” a man who bagged a contract for toll collection at the Lalanagar toll plaza on National Highway-2 in Aurai area.

Bhadohi Superintendent of Police RB Singh said: “An FIR naming Mishra, his MLC wife and son was registered by the Gopiganj police under Sections 325, 506, 347, 387 and 449 of the IPC on the complaint of the MLA’s relative Krishna Mohan Tiwari on Friday. On the request of the complainant, who cited a threat to his life, we have provided police security to him.”

Tiwari complained to the police that he owned a house in Dhanapur area under Gopiganj police station jurisdiction in Bhadohi district.

“The MLA has been forcibly living in my house and is now exerting pressure on me to register the property in his name. After I refused to sign the papers, Mishra, who has also taken over my firm, is threatening me with dire consequences,” Tiwari alleged.

The SP said that the Goonda Act case against Mishra is in the District Magistrate’s court for necessary action.

As many as 71 criminal cases are allegedly lodged against Mishra in various districts of the state. Ten of the cases are being heard in a special MP/MLA court, police sources said.

MLA Vijay Mishra had earlier won the Gyanpur seat in three consecutive Assembly polls but was denied ticket by the Samajwadi Party in the 2017 polls. He contested on Nishad Party ticket and won the seat again. He had contested the 2012 Assembly polls from jail.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters, the MLA’s son Vishnu claimed that the relative who had complained against them had borrowed Rs 32 crore from his MLA father.

“He had given us cheques for Rs 27 crore, which bounced. In order not to return our money, he lodged a complaint against us,” he alleged.

Apps that Facebook copied before taking on TikTok with Reels

0

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has always believed in a simple formula: If you want to beat your rivals, either acquire them or copy them in such a way that they never recover from it.

While the social network acquired WhatsApp and Instagram in order to “kill” the competition, it copied at least six popular apps before launching a clone called Instagram Reels to crush the Chinese short-video making app TikTok.

In June 2014, Facebook created a standalone app called Slingshot to “stave off the rise of Snapchat”.

The Snapchat users, however, did not switch to Slingshot which was eventually shut down in 2015.

One has to remember that Snap CEO Evan Spiegel famously turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook to buy his company Snapchat in 2013.

In March 2015, Facebook launched “On This Day” – similar to Timehop which was a rival social media service that had six million daily users at the time Facebook copied it, reports Forbes.

In 2016, unable to crush Snapchat, Facebook launched Instagram Stories, a blatant copy of Snapchat’s flagship feature that lets users post videos and photos that disappear after 24 hours.

Facebook later expanded the copied feature to its main app as well as the Messenger app.

In 2016, Facebook allowed its users to buy and sell goods from other users via Marketplace, “a dedicated tab for peer-to-peer shopping similar to Craigslist”.

Founded in 1995, Craigslist is a US-based classified advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, for sale, items wanted, services, community service, gigs, resumes, and discussion forums.

In April this year, Facebook created a standalone gaming app called Facebook Gaming that aims to take on the popular Twitch which is owned by Amazon.

Twitch is one of the most popular live streaming services in the world with nearly 10 billion hours of video watched in 2019.

Facebook Gaming is now available on Apple App Store after facing initial restriction.

In April again, the social networking giant launched Messenger Rooms, a video chat feature that takes on popular Zoom and Houseparty platforms.

In the next step to integrate its family of apps that are being used by 3.14 billion users globally, Facebook has integrated Messenger rooms with WhatsApp on the Web.

Finally, Facebook launched Instagram Reels this month that takes on its rival in the field of short-video making apps – TikTok.

The move came as TikTok is facing political heat in the US as President Donald Trump has issued an executive order, prohibiting the China-based ByteDance that owns TikTok from doing business with the US firms after 45 days.

Microsoft is now pursuing talks to acquire TikTok’s US business.

Meanwhile, new emails from April 2012 have revealed that worried about being left behind by mobile apps that made quick progress by cloning other services, Zuckerberg asked some of the company’s executives what could the social network do to stay ahead of others.

The email set off a long discussion among Facebook team members on the benefits of copying others like Pinterest instead of spending a lot of time on building new social use cases themselves.

The emails were released as part of a US House Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee probe earlier this month.

7 die in Andhra Covid care centre fire (Ld)

0

In a shocking incident, seven persons were killed in a fire that broke out at a paid COVID Care Centre run from a hotel by a private hospital here early Sunday morning, officials said.

Officials earlier said three persons had died in the mishap, while four others were shifted to a hospital. With four more casualties, the death toll had increased to seven at the time of filing of the report. The victims included two women.

Police officials did not rule out more casualties in the early morning fire as the condition of two of the center’s staff, who jumped from the first floor to escape, is said to be serious.

Around 50 persons, including 30 coronavirus patients, were reported to be present at the COVID treatment facility set up at Hotel Swarna Palace when the tragedy struck.

City Police Commissioner Srinivasa Rao said that the fire broke out around 5 am.

According to initial information, suffocation due to smoke emanating from the fire is said to have caused most casualties.

Firefighters were rushed to the spot who rescued the treatment center’s inmates with the help of ladders and rushed them to nearby hospitals in 15 ambulances.

A preliminary investigation found that a short circuit was the likely cause of the fire that started on the ground floor of the building. It later spread to the first floor that had been converted into a COVID care center.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock and sorrow over the incident and ordered an inquiry.

State Endowments Minister Vellampalli Srinivas, who represents Vijayawada West Assembly constituency, visited the spot and supervised rescue operations.

The Minister said the inquiry will look into whether it was an accident or failure on part of the hospital management.

Sunday’s fire accident is the latest in a series of mishaps to strike Andhra Pradesh in the last few months.

In May, a gas leak in Visakhapatnam at LG Polymers had left 12 persons dead. Recently, 12 persons had died after consuming sanitizers due to alcohol addiction.

Shruti Haasan on working with family in a film

Actress Shruti Haasan says that working with her family in a film will not necessarily make it a great film.

Shruti is the daughter of veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika. Her sister Akshara is an actress, too. She says she has not thought of working with all of them together.

“I tell you why because that doesn’t determine that it will make a great film. Everybody from the same family. That’s absolutely not what’s going to determine that at all,” Shruti told IANS.

The actress believes that a “great film is that a film chooses to be great and the people working on it”

She added: “I think films have a life of their own, which is really wonderful and then we kind of become a conduit to the energy and destiny of the film, and that can be with anybody. I don’t necessarily think that it would be with my family.”

Shruti was recently seen in the digitally-released film, “Yaara”, which also stars Vidyut Jammwal, Kenny Basumatry, Vijay Varma, and Amit Sadh.

Woakes-Buttler stand comparable to Stokes’ Headingley heroics, says Azhar

0

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali felt that Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler’s partnership against them in England’s thrilling three-wicket in the first Test between the two sides at Old Trafford was comparable to Ben Stokes’ famous match-winning century in the third Ashes Test at Headingley last year.

Woakes joined Buttler in the middle on Saturday when England was 117/5 chasing a target of 277. The pair then smashed 139 runs for the seventh wicket and while Buttler eventually departed on 75 off 101 balls, Woakes saw them over the line and was unbeaten on 84 off 120.

“Disappointing to be at the wrong end of it,” said Azhar in the presentation ceremony. “Credit to Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes, for taking the game on when we were comfortable and suddenly the pitch did nothing. They changed the momentum of the game and we had no reply.

“It’s tough when someone plays like that to keep the boundaries dry. You have to give credit to the opposition. This one is not far behind Ben Stokes innings against Australia because it was a tough situation.”

Stokes had famously led England to victory against Australia with an extraordinary 76 run-stand for the final wicket with Jack Leach. Azhar said that Pakistan was patient to get some reverse swing but the partnership between Buttler and Woakes changed everything.

“It surprised me that there was no reverse swing despite the ball being in good shape. We were patient and believed that we would get some reverse swing,” he said.

“We were rewarded with wickets for our discipline, but that partnership changed it all.”

England captain Joe Root said that the team has gained a belief after the summer of 2019 which included a World Cup win for the hosts from a seemingly unwinnable situation in the final apart from the Headingley Test.

“Credit to Pakistan for some brilliant cricket, and the way we approached the day, and the partnership between Woakesy and Jos Buttler was fantastic,” said Root.

“We knew it was going to take something special, and after last summer, it’s really hard to stop believing. That’s one strong trait of ours, that we have a lot of self-belief, so I’m really proud of them.”

Buttler has come under pressure recently due to his poor performances with the bat in Tests coupled with his mistakes behind the wickets but Root felt that this innings showed his character.

“To be able to play as well as he did, it shows Buttler’s character. It made sure that the new ball wasn’t a factor, since he attacked the spinners. It has been frustrating to lose the 1st Test of the series all the time, but I couldn’t be more proud of the character of the guys,” he said.

A few panicked persons jumped from the first floor of the building.

Vitamin D twice a day may keep vertigo away

0

Researchers have revealed that taking vitamin D and calcium twice a day may reduce your chances of getting vertigo again – a sudden internal or external spinning sensation, often triggered by moving your head too quickly.

“Our study suggests that for people with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, taking a supplement of vitamin D and calcium is a simple, low-risk way to prevent vertigo from recurring,” said study researcher Ji-Soo Kim from Seoul National University in South Korea.

“It is especially effective if you have low vitamin D levels, to begin with,” Kim wrote in a paper published in the journal Neurology.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo happens when a change in head position gives you a sudden spinning sensation. It’s one of the most common types of vertigo.

About 86 people of people with this form of vertigo find that it interrupts their daily life or causes them to miss days at work.

The study looked at 957 people in Korea with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo who were treated successfully with the head movements. The participants were separated into two groups, intervention and observation.

The 445 people in the intervention group had their vitamin D levels taken at the start of the study. The 348 people with vitamin D levels below 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) were started on supplements with 400 international units of vitamin D and 500 milligrams of calcium twice daily, while those with vitamin D levels equal to or greater than 20 ng/mL were not given supplements.

According to the study, 512 people in the observation group did not have their vitamin D levels monitored and they did not get supplements.

Those in the intervention group who took the supplements had a lower recurrence rate for vertigo episodes after an average of one year than those in the observation group. People taking supplements had an average recurrence rate of 0.83 times per person-year, compared to 1.10 times per person-year for those in the observation group, or a 24 percent reduction in the annual recurrence rate.

There appeared to be a greater benefit for those who were more deficient in vitamin D at the start of the study.

“Our study suggests an inexpensive, low-risk treatment like vitamin D and calcium tablets may be effective at preventing this common, and commonly recurring, disorder,” Kim noted.

Samsung dethrones Xiaomi as overall mobile phone leader in India

0

South Korean major Samsung has dethroned Xiaomi to lead the overall mobile phone market in India in the second quarter of this year, a new report said on Friday.

Samsung led the overall mobile phone market with a market share of 24 percent, followed by Xiaomi and Vivo, said IDC India.

The mid-premium segment ($300 and less than $500) with a share of 4.8 percent declined YoY by (48.4 percent) with top models such as Samsung’s Galaxy A51 and A71, Vivo’s V19, Apple’s iPhone SE (2020), and the OnePlus 7T.

In the smartphone segment only, Samsung surpassed Vivo for the second slot despite a strong YoY decline of (-48.5 percent) in the second quarter to 4.8 million units.

The Galaxy M21 was among the nation’s top five shipped models and most of its online-exclusive Galaxy M series was opened to offline channels, though at higher prices.

Samsung stood in second place in the online channel with a share of 22.8 percent and was the leader in the offline channel with a 29.1 percent share in 2Q20.

The brand also partnered with Benow and Facebook, enabling offline retailers to start sales using digital platforms, thus adhering to social distancing norms, said the IDC report.

Four out of the top five models in the second quarter were Xiaomi models, namely the Redmi Note 8A Dual, Note 8, Note 9 Pro, and Redmi 8, accounting for 21.8 percent share.

Xiaomi launched its Mi Commerce solution to create an omnichannel experience for partners but also continued its dominance in the online channel with a 42.3% share in 2Q20, said the IDC.

Amid security alert, visitors entry banned at airports from Aug 12

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has sounded a security alert for airports and other civil aviation installations ahead of Independence Day celebrations, following continuous threat perception received from central security agencies.

BCAS issued an advisory to the states, airports, airlines, CISF, Airports Authority of India (AAI) to enhance the existing security measures at all civil aviation installations like airports, airstrips, airfields, Air Force stations, helipads, flying schools, and aviation training institutes.

The entry of visitors to the airports and sale of visitors entry tickets will be banned with effect from August 12 to August 25.

The advisory comes in the wake of the continuous threat to the civil aviation sector received from central security agencies. The stepped-up security is to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during Independence Day celebrations.

BCAS has prescribed measures that need to be followed by all the stakeholders including servicing of CCTVs at all airports, strict monitoring through drones, paragliders, hot air balloons, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

In addition, it has sought strengthening of anti-terrorism and anti-sabotage measures, placement of quick response teams (QRT) at all airports and rehearsals, and intensive vehicle and passenger checks at the airport terminals.

There will be enhanced random checks at the entry of the terminal building including using dog squads. No vehicles will remain parked in front of the terminal building and increased surveillance in parking areas of airports.

The catering being uplifted from the caterers will be also under more scrutiny with thorough checks of the vehicles and the attendants. Strict monitoring of non-scheduled flight operations including air ambulance will also be undertaken.

Bale decided not to play against Man City, says Zidane

0

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has dismissed claims that winger Gareth Bale was axed from the squad to face Manchester City in the second leg of Round of 16 clashes in the UEFA Champions League.

Bale was earlier left out of Real’s final LaLiga clash as well. He cut an awkward figure after Real’s 34th league win and speculations have been rife about his future at Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane, however, revealed that Bale wasn’t axed from the squad to face City as the Welshman decided against making the trip to Manchester.

“I will explain because many things are said,” Zidane told reporters in a news conference as per Goal.com.

“We have a relationship of respect between player and coach, that is clear. The only thing I can say is that he has decided not to play, and the rest is between him and me.”

Bale has hardly played for the Spanish giants this year and has been linked with a move back to the Premier League and even China.

Over the years, he has been an important part of the Real side that won four Champions League titles in five years, famously scoring an overhead kick to give his team the lead against Liverpool in the final of the 2017/18 season.

He has scored a total of 16 times playing for Real Madrid in the Champions League and is the first substitute to have scored twice in the final of the tournament.
