E-learning players hail Centre’s e-VIDYA initiative

E-learning platforms have lauded the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement of the ‘Pradhan Mantri e-VIDYA’ initiative for digital education which would include online teaching, TV channels, radio and podcasts.

The multi-mode access program to be launched immediately would consist of ‘DIKSHA’ scheme for school education in states and union territories, which would provide e-content and QR coded textbooks for all grades.

Further, the government will launch one earmarked TV channel for each class from standard 1 to 12. The scheme would entail extensive use of radio, community radio and podcasts

Special e-content for visually and hearing impaired would also be provided under the scheme. In another major step, top 100 universities will be permitted to automatically start online courses by May 30, 2020.

Vamsi Krishna, CEO and Co-founder, Vedantu said: “The current situation is here to stay and E-learning is the solution one can resolve to as it allows one to study from the safe confines of their home and avoid travel to public places. Government initiatives like e-VIDYA programme will not only drive evolution and fundamentally change the pattern of teaching and learning but also make education accessible to everyone.”

He noted that the focus on technology driven education will open doors and present ample opportunities for educators and e-learning companies.

Sai Venkateshwaran, Partner and Head, CFO Advisory, KPMG in India said that post COVID-19, both the modes of delivery of education as well as the areas of study will need to significantly change as the country emerges into the new reality.

“As consumer and personal preferences change post COVID-19, we will see disruption in both business and operating models, driven by an accelerated push towards digital adoption, and this in turn will lead to a significant shift in talent and skill requirements,” Venkateshwaran said.

According to Ashvin Vellody, Partner, Deloitte India, the decision to allow the top universities impart education and learning by creating digital content and across all mediums under the concept of one nation, one platform is commendable.

The medical fraternity has welcomed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s measures for health reforms, saying these would go a long way in strengthening the healthcare services across the country as well as help prepare India for any future outbreak.

“The government’s decision to allot funds for public health labs and build infectious disease blocks in all district-level hospitals is praise-worthy. This will go a long way in strengthening healthcare services in the country as well as prepare the counrty for any future outbreak,” said Federation of Resident Doctor Association India’s President Dr Shivaji Dev Barman.

“Allotment of funds for providing adequate quantities of PPEs for healthcare workers will ensure their protection in the ongoing fight against COVID-19 epidemic,” said Barman.

“Healthcare planning should include necessary inputs from doctors working at ground level and by introducing the Indian Medical Service (IMS) cadre. Healthcare system needs to be strengthened at every level along with an improved disease surveillance system. Research in the health sector should also be stepped up.”

Dr Sudarshan Ballal, President of NatHealth- Healthcare Federation of India, said, “The healthcare industry welcomes these strategic reforms and looks forward to working with the government on expanding India’s healthcare footprint. Hike in borrowing limit to benefit Karnataka: Yediyurappa

Cash-starved and debt-ridden Karnataka would benefit from 2 percent increase in borrowing limit to 5 percent of the gross state domestic product (GSDP), said Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Sunday.

“The increased borrowing limit of states from 3 percent to 5 percent of the GSDP will benefit states like Karnataka, which are distressed due to COVID-19. With more funds, we will be able to revive our economic system,” said Yediyurappa in a statement here.

Reacting to the fifth tranche of the Rs 20-lakh crore stimulus package to revive the COVID-19-hit economy Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled in New Delhi earlier in the day, Yediyurappa said Karnataka would make efforts to realize aspirations of a self-reliant India (Athma Nirbhar Bharat), envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and unveiled by May 12.

Extending support to state governments across the country, Sitharaman said the 2 percent increase in borrowing limit would give Rs 4.28-lakh crore extra resource to states for fiscal 2020-21 only.

“Part of the borrowing will be linked to specific reforms, including recommendations of the Finance Commission. Reform linkage will be in universalisation of one nation one ration card’; ease of doing business, power distribution and urban local body revenues,” said Sitharaman on the occasion.

Reeling under severe resource crunch following revenue shortfall from tax collections and reduction in central grants, Yediyurappa earlier said the state would seek more share of funds from the 15th Finance Commission.

“Karnataka will soon petition the 15th Finance Commission to increase the state’s share from central taxes to make up for the reduction in allocation for fiscal 2020-21,” said Yediyurappa while presenting the state budget for this fiscal (FY 20-21) in the state legislative assembly here on March 5.

Yediyurappa holds the finance portfolio as an additional post.

The finance panel had reduced the state’s share by Rs 11,215 crore to 3.64 percent (Rs 28,591 crore) for fiscal 2020-21 after the 14th Commission reduced it by Rs 8,887 crore from 4.70 percent (Rs 39,806 crore) to Rs 30,919 crore for fiscal 2019-20.

The state also suffered Rs 3,000 crore compensation loss from the GST regime due to lower realisation of indirect tax collection by the Union finance ministry in the last fiscal (2019-20).

“The fifth tranche emphasizes on creating jobs to workers,Aimprovements in education and health sector, reforms to industrial laws and spur the state’s economic situation,” said Yediyurappa.

Terming the technology-driven education with equity, as a smart move, the chief minister said dedicated television channels would benefit thousands of children who cannot attend school due to the pandemic.

“The Prime Minister’s e-vidya programme will reduce pressure exerted by the formal system of education that we followed hitherto. E-education will bring in significant changes in the education sector,” asserted Yediyurappa.

Sitharaman said the e-vidya programme for multi-mode access to digital/online education would be launched soon.’Manodarpan’,an initiative for psycho-social support for students, teachers and families for mental health and emotional well-being, will also be unveiled at the earliest.

“New national curriculum and pedagogical framework for school, early childhood and teachers will be launched. National foundational literacy and numeracy mission for ensuring every child attains learning level and outcomes in grade 5 by 2025 will be unveiled by December,” said the finance minister.

On the Union finance ministry not initiating insolvency proceedings against companies and individuals becoming default/bankrupt due to Covid, the chief minister said the pro-active initiative would give relief to MSMEs (micro, small, medium enterprises) owners and revive the economy.

“Opening all sectors for private participation will provide new life to state-run institutions across the country,” added Yediyurappa.

The Finance Minister announced that minimum threshold to initiate insolvency proceedings has been raised to Rs 1 crore from Rs 1 lakh, which insulates MSMEs).

“Special insolvency resolution framework for MSMEs under section 240A of the Code will be notified soon,” Sitharaman added.

The Centre on Sunday extended the nationwide coronavirus lockdown by two more weeks from May 18 while easing curbs in areas with limited virus infection to boost the economy.

The nationwide lockdown 4.0 will end on May 31, said a National Disaster Management (NDMA) order, which came after Punjab, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu already announced the extension till the month-end.

All other activities will be permitted, except those which are specifically prohibited, the guidelines said. This means barber shops may open in the new lockdown and the guidelines this time did not categorise red, orange and green zones and left their delineation to the states.

However, in containment zones, only essential activities shall be allowed. Within the red and orange zones, containment zones and buffer zones will be demarcated by the district authorities. In the containment zones, only essential activities shall be allowed.

Red, orange and green zones are classified based on their risk profiles.

Green zones are districts that have had no confirmed cases till date, or none in the past 21 days. Red zones are identified on the basis of total number of active cases, the doubling rate of confirmed cases, the extent of testing and surveillance feedback from the districts. A district which is neither green or red will be classified as an orange zone, according to the government order.

Contrary to expectations, Metro services, all domestic and international air travel of passengers will continue to remain suspended. Only domestic medical services, domestic air ambulance and flights for security purposes as permitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be allowed.

Education sectors, hotels, restaurants and other hospitality services will also remain prohibited in the fourth phase of the lockdown to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Restaurants and hotels meant for providing services to housing health, police, government officials, healthcare workers, stranded persons, tourists, those living in quarantine facilities will be allowed, while restaurants shall be permitted to operate kitchens for home delivery of food items.

As per the fresh guidelines issued by the MHA, all cinema halls, shopping malls, gymnasium, assembly halls and similar places will be prohibited but sport complexes and stadia will be permitted to open, but with no entry for spectators.

While restrictions will continue on all social, political, religious congregations, marriage related gatherings with not more than 50 people have been allowed by following social distancing norms.

Gatherings related to funerals shall ensure people present do not exceed more than 20, as per the guidelines.

Consumption of paan, gutka, tobacco in public will remain prohibited. Spitting at a public place will be punishable with fine as per the prescribed rules, it said.

Shops will ensure minimum six feet (“2 gaz ki doori”) among customers and shall not allow more than five persons at a time.

Night curfew will stay between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and the movement of individuals will not be allowed in this time frame, except essential services. Persons above 65 years, persons with co-morbidities, pregnant women, and children below 10 years shall stay at homes, the guideline says.

Practice of work from home should be followed as far as possible, the guideline reads, adding staggering work, business hours shall be followed in offices, work places, shops and commercial establishments.

The Standard Operating Protocols (SOP) on transit arrangements for foreign nationals in India; Indians stranded outside India; movement of stranded labourers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons within states and UTs; sign-on and sign-off of India seafarers; movement of persons by trains will continue.

Special direction has been given in the guideline to ensure inter-state and intra-state movement of medical professionals, sanitation workers, all types of goods vehicles, including empty trucks. It is mentioned in the guideline that no state or UT will stop the movement of any type of goods or cargo for cross land-border trade.

The guidelines also stress ensuring that Aarogya Setu app is downloaded on the mobile phones of all employees.

Considering the fact that the lockdown measures need to be implemented for a further period in the country to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the National Disaster Managment Authority directed the ministries, departments of Indian government and states to continue the lockdown measures up to May 31.

The authorities further directed departments concerned to issue modifications in the guidelines as necessary, keeping in view the need to open up economic activities while containing the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus.

The extension came amid considerable relaxations being introduced in non-containment zones across the country and as the lockdown 3.0 was to end on Sunday midnight. This is the third extension to the lockdown, which was first imposed from March 25 and then extended from April 15 and May 4.

6 OPPO workers test Covid-19 positive at G Noida factory, ops shut

At least six workers at the Greater Noida factory of Chinese smartphone brand OPPO have been found corona positive, leading to all operations being suspended till further notice, reliable company sources told IANS on Sunday.

According to sources, after the coronavirus cases were confirmed at OPPO factory in Kasna, Greater Noida, the work was immediately halted on Sunday till further notice.

“We have been asked not to come to the factory as six COVID-19 cases have been confirmed at our manufacturing unit in Greater Noida. The company has asked us to stay at home till further notice,” an OPPO worker told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

“Do not go to work tomorrow. Everyone is at home waiting for the company’s next notice,” read an internal OPPO post.

An OPPO India spokesperson said in a statement that they have done Covid-19 testing for more than 3,000 employees for which test results are awaited.

“In the wake of the current situation, we have suspended all our operations at our manufacturing facility in Greater Noida and will allow only those employees to return to work who have tested negative. The employees who test positive will be taken to the quarantine facilities for treatment,” a company spokesperson told IANS.

Meanwhile, two third-party construction employees at an under-construction Vivo facility in the Greater Noida industrial belt have also tested COVID-19 positive.

One third-party construction worker and one security guard at an upcoming Vivo site at the industrial park area in Greater Noida – where multiple factories are currently under construction – have tested Covid-19 positive.

However, this has not affected Vivo manufacturing as the construction site is nearly 15 km away from its operational unit, said sources.

OPPO and Vivo, along with other top handset makers, resumed manufacturing at their Noida and Greater Noida-based factories with 30 per cent workforce from May 8.

OPPO restarted manufacturing operations with 30 per cent workforce, with around 3,000 employees working in rotation out of more than 10,000-strong staff at its Kasna, Greater Noida-based facility.

Vivo also resumed production at its production facility with about 30 per cent of its workforce capacity.

22 years ago, against all odds, Tendulkar single-handedly powered India into the Coca Cola Cup final with an astonishing 131-ball 143 in Sharjah.

Although, he couldn’t power India over the finishing line in the match, he did manage to drag them into the title clash against the same opposition, which India eventually won.

Kohli was also quizzed by Chhetri about that one Tendulkar shot which he wished was also present in his armoury and the ‘Delhi Dasher’ spoke about the latter’s lap shot.

“Wow… there are so many. You know the ease with which he used to play the lap shot… unbelievable… I never saw him miss it.. unbelievable control. I could never play that shot well so I would look to steal that,” Kohli said.

From Tendulkar, the conversation soon shifted to former Australia spinner Shane Warne, who was hit by the ‘Master Blaster’ to all corners in Sharjah.

Kohli recalled the moment when Warne made him look like a fool during the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa.

During the 2nd match of the tournament in Cape Town, Kohli came out of the crease to hit a Warne delivery but missed it completely and the ball crashed into middle stumps after pitching on leg.

“I played against Shane Warne and he made me look like a fool in IPL 2009. Then there was a game in Rajasthan in 2011 and he was the captain, I played decent there… didn’t hit him and he didn’t get me out. We won the match and I remained unbeaten,” Kohli recalled.

“You know that is when he told me something after the game that ‘never bite back.. never say something back to the bowler’.

“You know obviously I didn’t listen because meri gaadi usi se chalti hai. Maine kaha chalne do (because that is my go-to game and I shouldn’t change it),” Kohli said, leaving Chhetri in splits.

Samsung unveil 5G smartphone with quantum-safe crypto solution

South Korea’s largest mobile carrier SK Telecom has introduced a 5G smartphone called Galaxy A Quantum, highlighting quantum-safe cryptography solution in cooperation with Samsung Electronics.

The price of the handset has been set at 649,000 won ($530) in South Korea.

According to the company, the Galaxy A Quantum will be the world’s first 5G smartphone with quantum random number generator (QRNG) chipset that ensures better mobile communication security.

The QRNG chip, developed by SK Telecom’s Switzerland-based subsidiary ID Quantique, generates random numbers based on quantum crypto technology, which creates strong keys that are not biased and cannot be predicted, the company said, thus strengthening the security of data transmission.

SK Telecom said Galaxy A Quantum users will be able to experience its quantum crypto solution in services that require identification and certification, which includes mobile payment application.

The Galaxy A Quantum comes with a quad-rear camera setup with a 6.7-inch display and a 4,500mAh battery.

Violations of airspace by Chinese choppers in Himachal

Chinese helicopters violated Indian airspace twice in Himachal Pradesh last month, officials revealed on Sunday.

The intrusions were taken up with the central authorities appropriately by the state government, an official told IANS.

The first intrusion was reported on April 11 and the second on April 20. In both incidents, a Chinese helicopter was observed flying on the Indian side of the international border close to Sumdoh in Spiti subdivision, he added.

Sumdoh is located on the border of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts and is manned by the state police. Beyond Sumdoh, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel are deployed.

Himachal Pradesh shares a porous border with China and smuggling of rare species of fauna and Chinese goods like blankets and thermos flasks across the border is quite frequent.

18 evacuation flights to Karnataka from Monday

In the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission, national carrier Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express will fly in more Indians stranded abaroad to Karnataka in 18 evacuation flights from Monday to June 3, an official said Sunday.

“The first flight in the second phase of the mission to Karnataka will be from Dubai to Mangaluru by Air India Express on Monday evening and the remaining 17 flights will land in Bengaluru over the next 17 days,” an Air India official told IANS here.

In the first phase of the mission from May 7-17, the airline and its arm flew 6 flights to the state from May 11-15, bringing in 800 passengers, including 623 to the state capital and 177 to Mangaluru from London, Singapore, San Francisco and Dubai.

“In the second phase, Air India will operate 15 flights and its arm 3 flights to Bengaluru and Mangaluru from May 18-June 3. Some of the flights will be via New Delhi and Mumbai from different overseas destinations,” said the official.

As per Union Ministry of Home Affairs’ guidelines, priority to fly back is given first to the stranded citizens in various countries the world over since March 23 when international flights were suspended and due to the nationwide lockdown since March 25 and its extension twice till May 17.

“Besides stranded citizens of the state, priority is being given to distressed Indian expatriates stuck after job loss, especially in the Gulf region, students, tourists, senior citizens, pregnant women and medical emergency cases,” the official said.

The 15 foreign destinations from where passengers will be ferried back are Melbourne (Australia), Toronto and Vancouver (Canada), Paris, Frankfurt (Germany), Jakarta, Dublin, Kuala Lumpur, Male, Muscat, Manila, Doha, Dammam (Saudi Arabia), Singapore, Dubai and New York, San Francisco and Washington DC.

“Though only asymptomatic passengers are being flown in, they will be screened and tested on landing and quarantined for 14 days before going home as per the mandatory of the Union Health Ministry to ensure the virus is not spread,” added the official.

The state government has booked star hotels, resorts, guest houses and hostels across the city to quarantine the overseas returnees for 14 days.

Of the 18 flights, 7 will terminate service in Bengaluru and 11 flights will go to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kochi after a stop-over for the passengers from the state to alight.

Air India flight from Chicago to Hyderabad brings home 168

Air India special flight with 168 evacuees from Chicago landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Sunday, officials.

Air India AI 126 flight from Chicago (the US) via Delhi landed at 4.45 a.m., an airport spokesman said.

All passengers were serviced through the fully sanitized International Arrivals of the Main Passenger Terminal.

To facilitate the arriving passengers and aircraft crew, the airport kept the international arrivals and the entire stretch right from the aerobridge to the arrivals ramp fully sanitized and fumigated. It also enforced the social distancing among the passengers right from the aerobridge to across the terminal.

Airport officials said all arriving passengers and aircraft crew were brought out from the aircraft in a batch of 20-25 persons each. Every passenger and crew member was screened by the Thermal Cameras positioned at the aerobridge exit under supervision of the Airport Health officials (APHO) as per the directives of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare prior to the immigration formalities.

After the health screening of passengers, the CISF personnel in their protective gear escorted the group of passengers to immigration clearance.

Glass shields were provided at each manned immigration counter to avoid any personal contact between the passengers and immigration officers.

Every baggage was sanitized by the disinfection tunnel integrated to the baggage belt as arranged by the airport.

As per the government’s norm the passengers were taken for mandatory 14 day quarantine at the designated locations in the city.

This was the ninth flight to land at the Hyderabad Airport under the Vande Bharat Mission, the biggest ever evacuation exercise undertaken by India to evacuate the Indian nationals stranded in various countries due to Covid-19 lockdown.

The airport, through these nine flights, has received nearly 1,500 evacuees from countries like the US, Kuwait, the UK, the UAE, Philippines and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the airport also handled a departure repatriation flight from Hyderabad to Delhi on Sunday. Air India AI 1840 departed at 6.41 a.m. with 68 passengers to Delhi. From Delhi, these passengers are scheduled to be airlifted to various foreign destinations in the UK and the US.

All departing passengers were serviced through the fully sanitized Interim International Departures Terminal (IIDT) as per all safety protocol in place.

Special screening and safety measures were in place during the flight’s handling to protect against the Covid-19 threat, including thermal screening prior to terminal entry, mandatory social distancing enforced through special queuing arrangements at all passenger processing points.

With this the Hyderabad Airport also handed 13 departure flights serving over 1,000 foreign nationals who were repatriated to countries like the US, the UK, the UAE, Kenya and Germany.

Apart from the making us practice the usual personal hygiene which is observed as a precautionary measure to prevent contracting any infection, the novel coronavirus is being ‘hatke’ in stressing on physical distancing.

Pre-Covid, nightlife existed and it was more visible in urban areas in tune with the cliché “the city never sleeps”. Youngsters and employees working in the ghost shifts, employees and workers involved the supply chain of essentials used to be moving on the roads even when the night was dark and others were snoring in deep sleep.

The Visakhapatnam gas leak tragedy took away 11 lives and left hundreds of people suffering from breathing complications since the day. The LG Polymers, the manufacturing unit from which the gas leaked out, released a second press statement about the accident and the company’s response to it.

LG Polymers, in its official press statement, revealed that a team of eight from Seoul arrived at Visakhapatnam to analyze and completely review the reasons for the cause of Styrene gas leak and also its effects on the environment. The team would also be studying the future consequences due to the gas leak and is here to implement measures to avoid such tragedies again. As a part of preventive measures, the Styrene Monomer gas tanks here are planned to be moved to South Korea.

LG Polymers also assured to work towards helping the people in affected villages. The company mentioned providing health facilities, tests, and other facilities to the villagers. Some from the gas leak affected were discharged from the hospital and the state ministers handed over the ex-gratia checks to some families already.

Tenth and many exams across the country have been postponed

Due to the Corona virus, the tenth standard and many exams across the country have been postponed. There is still an uncertainty among students so as when the exams would be held. The government of Andhra Pradesh probably is the first state in the country to finalise the schedule of tenth standard exams.

From July 10th to 15th, the tenth exams are likely to be held. Also the state government has decided to reduce the number of papers from 11 to 6. Earlier each paper would have 50 marks questions and now each paper would carry 100 marks. The education department had made these suggestions in order to save time and also the academic year of students.

However an official announcement is yet to arrive. Though the students have ample of time to prepare for the exams, it will be a challenging task for them to write six papers instead of 11.

Meanwhile the Telangana government is yet to take a decision on tenth exams. The TRS government needs to take the consent of Telangana High Court and minister Sabitha Indrareddy stated that they would soon file an affidavit in the court.

Government should provide food and shelter to migrant workers

Thousands of migrant workers all over the country are reaching their native places in this lockdown with no work. Daily we have been seeing workers on the roads and railway tracks. Getting tired of walking all day, migrant workers are sleeping on the train tracks and losing lives.

Regarding the migrant workers, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court that respective state governments should provide food and shelter to them. Taking up this petition, the Supreme Court made disappointing comments.

The advocate general on behalf of Centre argued that the government has taken all the measures to move migrant workers. But they need to wait for their turn. Many are in no mood to wait and are taking their own route to reach their places. Even if the government stops them, unprecedented circumstances may occur.

After listening these arguments, Supreme Court said, how is it possible to avoid the train mishap when migrant workers sleep on the tracks? In fact state governments should take necessary steps to prevent such incidents and dismissed the petition.

We were hearing reports of pregnant ladies walking hundreds of kilometers and are evening delivering babies on the highways. At least for the sake of women, the court should have directed states to take necessary steps to prevent migrant workers from taking their route.

The states are facing sharp decline in revenues

States would be able to borrow more money, the Centre said today, increasing their borrowing limit from 3 per cent to 5 percent. This would give them an Rs 4.28 lakh crore, said Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, unveiling the Rs 20 lakh crore fiscal stimulus in the fifth and the last tranche.

The states are facing sharp decline in revenues following the countrywide lockdown imposed to counter coronavirus. “We have consistently provided the necessary support because they are at the front end of fighting the pandemic,” Ms Sitharaman said.

The states have a net borrowing ceiling, the minister said. They can borrow upto 3 per cent of state’s GSDP. “The government is increasing the borrowing limit to 5 per cent from 3 per cent. This will give an additional Rs 4.28 lakh crore to states,” the minister said.

The minister said the government has also asked the Reserve Bank to increase the advance limits for states by 60%.

The number of days a state can stay in continuous overdraft days has been increased from 14 days to 21 days and from 32 to 51 days quarterly, Ms Sitharaman said.

The states have been demanding financial assistance for long. Last week, during their videoconference with Prime Minister Narenra Modi, all Chief Ministers underscored the point. The Centre must release their share of the Goods and Services Act, they said, and provide further assistance in the battle against coronavirus.

At a time when cricket boards across the globe have been postponing tours with an eye on the coronavirus pandemic and health directives from their respective governments, the Sri Lankan board has requested the  to go ahead and play the limited-over series against the Island Nation in mid-July. But the Indian board feels it will be near impossible to go ahead with it.

Speaking to IANS, a BCCI official said that while it is still some time away, it looks almost impossible that the Indian team can travel to Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series as early as July.

“I would say it is close to impossible at present. Firstly, we need to take one step at a time in the current scenario and you do realise that some of our players are stuck in Mumbai and Bengaluru — two zones which are highly affected by the pandemic. Without even going into the question on whether the Indian team would travel without the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma among others, I would say will international travel be permissible? So, we all need to wait and watch how things unfold.

“But keeping in mind how efficiently the government has looked to fight the battle against the pandemic, I doubt we will be in a position to travel outside the country by mid-July. The BCCI will obviously try to honour all its commitments, if not now, then at a later date which suits both boards involved. But looking at the current scenarios, safety is priority. Also, to get cricketers in the red zone to come out and travel to a green zone is currently not allowed. So, if the government does in the near future allow that, we will have to see what happens from there on and if we can then start domestic cricket. Domestic cricket is the way forward at present,” he explained.

As per a report published in ‘The Island’, Sri Lanka Cricket has sent an e-mail to BCCI, requesting the possibility of resuming bilateral cricket later in July. Virat Kohli-led India are slated to tour the Island Nation in mid-July for three ODIs and three T20 internationals.

The report further said that “when contacted by The Island, an official said that they would have to follow strict quarantine rules and the series might take place behind closed doors considering the safety of fans.”

Interestingly, SLC has also shown interest to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, a move that was supported by Australia legend Mathew Hayden during an interview with IANS. He said that if it’s not possible to stage the tournament in India, it can be held in a nation like Sri Lanka where a city like Colombo has three or four international venues — provided all necessary health precautions are taken care of and there’s no risk to the players, support staff and the broadcasting team that would be travelling.

But an IPL now seems likely only in the October-November window with the World T20 almost set to be postponed.
