7 infants were murdered by a nurse in the UK

Nurse Lucy Letby, who has been convicted of murdering seven infants, making her the UK’s most prolific child serial killer in modern history, is set to be sentenced following a lengthy 10-month trial, which is considered the longest in the country.

The 33-year-old nurse, also found guilty

The 33-year-old nurse, also found guilty of attempting to murder six more infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital, will not be physically present during the sentencing at Manchester Crown Court, as reported by the BBC. Her legal team has not provided a reason for her absence from the court and has stated that she does not wish to follow the proceedings via a video link from prison.

Letby, known as the “killer nurse,” intentionally administered air injections to some babies, force-fed others milk, and poisoned two infants with insulin between June 2015 and June 2016. She had declined to appear in the dock when the latest guilty verdicts were delivered on August 18, which were revealed over several hearings but could not be reported until all verdicts were returned.

Originally from Hereford, Letby broke down in tears when the jury’s foreman announced the first guilty verdicts on August 8 after 76 hours of deliberation. She continued to cry with her head bowed as the second set of guilty verdicts was delivered on August 11.

However, Letby was found not guilty of two attempted murder charges, and the jury was unable to reach a verdict on additional attempted murder charges related to four babies, according to the BBC.

During the trial, which began in October 2022, the prosecution characterized Letby as a “calculating and devious” opportunist who manipulated colleagues to conceal her “murderous assaults.” Her conviction followed a two-year investigation by Cheshire Police into the unexplained increase in deaths and near-fatal incidents involving premature babies at the hospital.

Checkout.com, a payment processor, abandons Binance due to regulatory worries

Global payments processor Checkout.com has decided to end its relationship with leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance due to increasing concerns related to regulatory issues. Binance was previously one of Checkout.com’s largest clients, with transactions exceeding $2 billion in a single month in 2021, according to Forbes.

Checkout.com’s CEO, Guillaume Pousaz, terminated the company’s association with Binance, citing “reports of regulators’ actions and orders in relevant jurisdictions” and “inquiries from partners” as reasons for the decision. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding Binance’s anti-money laundering, sanctions, and compliance controls.

Binance, however, disagreed with Checkout.com’s justification for ending the contract and stated that it was considering legal action. A spokesperson for Binance emphasized their commitment to building a leading compliance program and gaining trust with regulators and partners.

Checkout.com had been processing between $300 million and $400 million worth of Binance transactions. This move is considered a significant setback for Binance, especially in the context of ongoing regulatory challenges, including a lawsuit by US regulators against Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao, alleging deceptive operations and filing 13 charges in federal court in June of the same year.

In an update, the Maui Police Department confirmed that the total number of fatalities in these devastating wildfires has increased from 111, as reported on Thursday, to 114.

During a televised speech, Hawaii Governor Josh Green expressed that the number of casualties is expected to rise daily as the search for victims continues. He emphasized the profound scale of devastation on Maui, where over 2,200 buildings have been destroyed, and approximately 500 have suffered damage, resulting in an estimated cost of nearly $6 billion.

The governor noted that there are currently around 470 search and rescue personnel and 40 search dogs tirelessly combing through the hundreds of burnt structures. Despite the immense challenges ahead, Governor Green expressed determination to rebuild Lahaina, a historic town and popular tourist destination on Maui, which has been severely affected by these deadly wildfires. He acknowledged that the process would take years of effort and billions of dollars but emphasized the collective commitment to this endeavor.

FPIs sold shares in August valued Rs 10,921 crore

According to V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) shifted from being buyers to sellers in August after a sustained period of three months during which they invested a total of Rs 1,37,603 crore. Data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) reveals that FPI investments in August, up to the 18th, amounted to Rs 8,993 crore. However, it’s important to note that this figure includes bulk deals and investments made through the primary market. In the cash market, Foreign Portfolio Investors sold stocks worth Rs 10,921 crore during August, with them being sellers for most of the month, buying on only three days.

In August, FPIs sold stocks worth Rs 10,921 crore

Vijayakumar pointed out that the strength of the US dollar index, which is well above 103, and the US 10-year bond yield remaining around 4.25%, are short-term factors that have a negative impact on FPI investments in emerging markets like India. Despite this shift in Foreign Portfolio Investors’ behavior, they have continued to be consistent buyers in sectors like capital goods and power, but they have started selling in financial sectors. While Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have been buying to counter FPI selling, this may not be sufficient to prevent a decline in the market.

Given the prevailing conditions, with a strong US dollar and rising US bond yields, it is expected that Foreign Portfolio Investors will likely continue to sell in the near-term.

Users of social media should be more mindful of its effects

Social media users need to be more aware of its effects.

The Supreme Court has emphasized the need for social media users to be cautious regarding the influence and extent of their posts while dismissing a petition lodged by actor and former Tamil Nadu MLA S Ve Shekher. Shekher is currently facing legal proceedings for sharing a Facebook post in 2018 that allegedly contained derogatory remarks against women journalists.

The Supreme Court underscored the need for caution

A bench composed of Justices BR Gavai and PK Mishra was reviewing Shekher’s plea challenging the Madras High Court’s decision on July 14, which had rejected his request to have the criminal charges related to the post he shared dismissed.

The bench advised the advocate representing the petitioner that individuals who utilize social media must exercise greater care given its potential impact and reach. The lawyer argued that Shekher had applied eye medication on the day of the incident, which impeded his ability to read the content of the post he shared.

The Supreme Court underscored the need for caution when using social media and suggested that those who choose to use it must also be prepared to accept any consequences that may arise as a result.

Parents’ lawsuit against Roblox has been filed

Parents in the United States have filed a lawsuit against the popular gaming platform Roblox, which is also widely popular among teenagers in India. The lawsuit accuses Roblox of illegally enabling child gambling.

the parents claim that their children have unknowingly lost thousands of Roblox’s virtual currency

This legal action, filed in the Northern District of California, is brought by two parents on behalf of their children, who are identified as minor plaintiffs. According to reports from TechCrunch, the parents claim that their children have unknowingly lost thousands of Roblox’s virtual currency on various third-party websites.

Roblox currently sells 800 Robux, its digital currency, for $9.99 on its website, with greater discounts available for larger amounts.

Although gambling is not permitted on the Roblox platform, the legal action alleges that the company directed children to third-party gambling websites that encourage users to play games like blackjack, slots, and roulette using Roblox’s in-game currency.

The lawsuit further contends that Roblox maintains control over Robux and, as a result, is aware of these questionable third-party gambling sites that entice children to use the in-game currency for gambling.

The legal action was initiated by plaintiffs Rachel Colvin and Danielle Sass, both mothers whose children have engaged in gambling on third-party websites using Roblox’s virtual currency.

The block feature, which prevents other users from interacting with, viewing, and following an account, is set to be eliminated. Musk clarified that the ‘Mute’ feature will still be available on the platform. In response to a follower, the tech billionaire explained that the block feature will be deleted as a ‘feature,’ with the exception of its use in DMs, and he expressed that this change doesn’t make sense.

Back in June, Musk had previously advocated for Twitter to replace blocking with a “stronger form of mute.” He had also voiced concerns about mass blocking campaigns targeting users who subscribe to Twitter Blue. While some users consider blocking a safety feature, the suggestion to remove it has generated criticism and worries from the user community.
