US economy to grow more slowly than hoped: Fed official

0

The US economy is expected to grow more slowly than it was hoped months ago as the country was still struggling to stop the community spread of COVID-19, a senior Federal Reserve official said.

“Some of the better economic data we’ve been getting has reflected the fact that those places are opening up, but they may not be opening up as safely as they need to,” Xinhua news agency quoted Eric Rosengren, president of Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, as saying in an interview on Monday.

“If the result is that they (officials) have to impose new restrictions later in the year, that actually is going to slow down the economic recovery,” he said, noting the economy and the pandemic are “very closely intertwined”.

“That is actually my baseline forecast, (which) is that unfortunately, we’re unlikely to stop the community spread, and we’ll be in a situation where the economy is growing more slowly than we might have hoped a few months ago,” said the Fed official.

Rosengren said the central bank’s newly launched Main Street Lending Program, which offers small and medium-sized companies loans, could provide “insurance” against what he expects to be a more difficult second half of the year.

“If I’m right the second half of the year is more difficult than many people are anticipating. I think having this facility up and running will be an important insurance policy for the economy,” he said.

Rosengren’s latest remarks came after a Fed official said on June 19 that the US unemployment rate will remain in double digits by the end of this year.

“I expect the unemployment rate to still be at double-digit levels at the end of the year, given what is likely to be persistent economic headwinds from the pandemic over the second half of the year,” he said.

Since February, US employers have cut nearly 20 million jobs from payrolls, reversing almost 10 years of job gains, according to the Labor Department.

The unemployment rate jumped to a post-World War II high of 14.7 percent in April and then moved down to a still very elevated 13.3 percent in May.

With 2,310,786 cases and 120,393 deaths, the US continued with the world’s highest number of COVID-19 infections and fatalities as of Tuesday.

Minor beaten to death after buffalo damages crops

0

A 15-year-old boy was beaten to death by three men after his buffalo damaged their sugarcane crop in the Sisaiya village in Shahjahapur.

An FIR has been registered against the three people under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. The accused are on the run.

Members of the boy’s family, along with Samajwadi Party district president Tanveer Khan, staged a protest outside the office of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Shahjahanpur, alleging that the police were shielding the accused.

The incident was reported on Saturday evening when the boy, Kuldeep Yadav, was playing with his friends and his buffalo entered the sugarcane field of farmer Sadhu Singh and his brother Dharmendra Singh.

Sadhu and Dharmendra were reportedly inebriated and caught the buffalo and refused to return it to the boy.

An argument took place and Dharmendra, his son Bhupinder, and Sadhu started beating Kuldeep brutally with sticks until he fell unconscious. Thereafter, the accused fled the spot.

Kuldeep’s father Mahesh took his son to a hospital in the Shahjahanpur city.

Kuldeep’s condition was critical and he succumbed to injuries on Sunday. His mother Rani Devi fell ill after hearing the news and is in hospital.

Station House Officer (SHO) Jag Narain Pandey said, “We have registered an FIR under section 302 (murder) and the accused will be arrested soon.”

He said that the motive behind the murder could be an election-related rivalry.

Recently, Sirish revealed that he has made a conscious decision to increasingly use and support Indian brands.

“By consuming Indian brands we help our own economy. Here are some products I purchased at the supermarket recently. All Indian brands. Many of us use local products but don’t like to admit as we think that makes us look less cool. It’s time to break that myth. Let’s not just buy local but be vocal about it. I urge you all to #GoLocalBeVocal,” he added.

Sirish, who made his acting debut in 2013 with the film “Gouravam”, was last seen on screen in the Telugu film “ABCD: American Born Confused Desi”. Directed by Sanjeev Reddy, the film also stars Rukshar Dhillon.

Seeing the craze for Rahul, it appears that Bigg Boss is intentionally reducing his footage and focussing on other housemates. So, unless Bigg Boss makers play some tricks and ignore the voting, Rahul Sipligunj is much likely to get crowned.

Pacers, Vince fetch series lead for England versus New Zealand

0

England put in a clinical performance with both bat and ball on Friday (November 1) to go 1-0 up in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Going into this contest with a new-look side against New Zealand sans Kane Williamson and Trent Boult, England were in control right from the word go. After restricting New Zealand to 153/5, the visitors eased to a victory with seven wickets in hand.

Scott Kuggeleijn’s 18-run over got the chase going after two quiet overs to begin with. Jonny Bairstow, who lost his Test spot recently, looked in good touch, slamming the pacer for three fours and a six. It was Mitchell Santner who struck for New Zealand in the final over before the powerplay. Dawid Malan came down the track but managed only an outside edge that was taken with ease by Ish Sodhi at short third man.

James Vince then got off to a flyer fetching two boundaries off his first four balls but Santner slowed down proceedings with another wicket. This time, it was Bairstow who fetched a wide delivery to smash it to deep midwicket where Guptill took a nice running low catch. At the halfway mark, New Zealand were still in with a shout as England needed 84 runs off the last ten overs. However, Vince switched gears to put the game beyond New Zealand’s reach.

He first hammered back-to-back boundaries off Ish Sodhi before picking a Kuggeleijn slower ball to perfection to launch one over midwicket. 24 runs in two overs shifted the momentum firmly in England’s favor and from thereon, it was easy pickings. Vince eventually got to his maiden T20I fifty and even though Santner came back for his final over to get rid of the well-set batsman, skipper Eoin Morgan got the job done with a flurry of boundaries towards the end.

Earlier in the day, the England pace attack kept things tight to keep New Zealand to just 153 on what looked like an ideal wicket to bat on. Taking the pace off the ball did work for England especially at the start with the new ball and that ploy even fetched a maiden in the second over against Colin Munro. New Zealand scored just 6 runs off the first 16 balls and the pressure did result in Martin Guptill getting an inside edge on to his stumps to gift Sam Curran his first wicket in the format.

Morgan’s decision to bowl the left-arm seamer for the third time in the powerplay backfired as New Zealand finally found some momentum. Tim Seifert first flat-batted one over midwicket and Munro finished the over with successive sixes to take 21 from that over that finally pushed the run rate beyond six. But before Munro could tee off, Chris Jordan came into the attack and finished the powerplay with the left-hander’s wicket — a low full toss chipped straight to the midwicket fielder.

The dismissal earned Colin de Grandhomme a promotion and the allrounder did keep himself busy at the crease. After nailing a one-handed six against Patrick Brown, one of the three debutants, de Grandhomme could only mistime a delivery off Adil Rashid at the halfway mark. Seifert was the next to go as England kept chipping away to deny the hosts any momentum. This time, Jordan bowled another full toss with the batsman finding the fielder but replays did suggest that the call was touch and go. With the ball appearing to dip on the batsman – the impact being made a little earlier – the umpires deemed it was not over waist-high to be called a no-ball.

New Zealand had to heavily rely on Ross Taylor and Daryl Mitchell for the finishing touches and even though the pair did click with a half-century stand, the addition of just 48 runs in the final five overs didn’t help their cause. Mitchell fetched a six each off Brown and Jordan whereas Taylor cracked a four and a six at the other end. Brown came back strong to finish proceedings with a top over which summed up New Zealand’s struggles with the willow.

Brief scores: New Zealand 153/5 in 20 overs (Ross Taylor 44, Tim Seifert 32; Chris Jordan 2-28) lost to England 154/3 in 18.3 overs (James Vince 59, Jonny Bairstow 35; Mitchell Santner 3-23) by 7 wickets

Delhi T20I will go ahead despite pollution concerns – Ganguly

0

While the gloom of pollution hangs over the upcoming first T20I between India and Bangladesh in Delhi on November 3, with the air quality level in the capital city plunging into hazardous levels, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly is hopeful that the match will not be affected by it. While admitting that better planning is needed when it comes to scheduling matches at certain venues in North India, Ganguly said the current schedule cannot be tinkered with.

“It’s too late to do anything, because a lot of preparations go into matches, tickets, crowds and everything, so it’s not possible to cancel things at the last minute. Fingers crossed. I hope the match gets through. I spoke to the DDCA and they are confident to get through it,” said Ganguly, who spoke to reporters at Eden Gardens on Thursday (October 31).

“I know post-Diwali it’s a bit tough in the North. As I said fingers crossed. It’s too late to change. I hope everything goes fine. I spoke to the groundsmen he says once the sun comes out, it’ll be fine. He was my groundsman in Delhi Capitals. I know him well so he said everything will be fine. So fingers crossed. We want the game to happen,” he said.

Back in December 2017, when Sri Lanka faced India in a Test match in Delhi, high pollution levels forced the game to be halted on several occasions. Several Sri Lankan players complained of breathing difficulty, with some of them taking the field sporting masks. A couple of them even vomited while some needed a supply of oxygen during the second day’s play of the Delhi Test. In November 2016, a Ranji Trophy game between Gujarat and Bengal was abandoned due to high pollution levels.

“Delhi should be worried about the contamination levels rather than the cricket match that happens. Not only players, it’s also for the common people of the capital city as well. A match is a very small thing, I think we can say whether we want to shift the match or not. ,” Gambhir told IANS.

“Yeah, yeah, I think we will do that (consultation),” said Ganguly when asked if the BCCI would work on the scheduling issues. “In the future when we schedule – especially in the northern part of India during the winter – we will have to be a little bit more practical. But we have spoken to the Delhi authorities in the last two days. They’re expecting the match to go through.

“The match was already scheduled so we couldn’t cancel it at the last minute because we came in on October 23. I hope it goes through but post-Diwali is a bit of a difficult time in the North because the winter comes in, there’s a lot of smoke and dust and everything,” Ganguly said.

Will Australia set up a 3-0 against Sri Lanka?

0

Melbourne is home to nearly half of all Sri Lankans who reside in Australia-nearly 60,000 in all. And you can expect most, if not all, of them to show up and cover the vast expanse of the MCG in the Lankan blue. But the question is will the Sri Lankan team actually turn up. In the body, they certainly will but in spirit? Not on the basis of how they’ve gone in the series so far.

If anything the Australians, on the field that is, will be hoping that they do more than even they themselves would. This is after all the start of a lengthy campaign that Aaron Finch & Co. have embarked on to first claim the top ranking in T20I cricket and then lay their claim for a title that Australia have never won.

Not to forget that they already have the current No.1 ranked team, Pakistan, in their backyard and having made a commanding start to their tour in the warm-up game. And they’ll need more competition to get going and get tested in that regard, even if being indomitable and crushing opponents in clinical fashion like they have this week isn’t a bad way to go about it.

There’s still a long way to go till that World Cup but Australia will want to ask certain questions of themselves before they start feeling more settled with their setup. Steve Smith’s return to the crease in T20I cricket was sensational, so were his revelations pre-game about him playing at his best on zero sleep, his different stances for different formats and his guitar skills. But that Smith is the best batsman in the country, and perhaps the world, was already known even if his exact role in this format still needs defining and feels more flexible at this stage.

David Warner continued his dream run in white-ball cricket and the bowlers were as clinical as they were in Adelaide. The rest of the batsmen are still to come to the crease, forget the party, and Glenn Maxwell’s unfortunate break from the game should get the likes of Ashton Turner and Alex Carey to get a hit if Sri Lanka and their own openers allow them the opportunity.

On the evidence of how they’ve managed to both curtail and derail the Sri Lankan middle-order in the middle overs, Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar should be considered as certainties going forward. But like with most of what Australia has achieved so far this week, they’ll want to wait till the end of the Pakistan series to be fully convinced.

Billy Stanlake bowled with fire on the bouncy Gabba pitch and should be tested a little more ideally on the flatter MCG pitch. Kane Richardson meanwhile has been honest in his two outings without really doing enough to ascertain a regular place in the playing XI, especially once Andrew Tye is back from injury.

Lasith Malinga looked rather cross with his batsmen at the end of the last match, and you’d think they possibly can’t do worse than what they’ve dished out so far. Both Malinga and Australia can only hope.

BCCI makes specific request for pink ball ahead of Day-Night Test

0

As the Indian cricket board (BCCI) gears up to host its first day-night Test in less than a month’s time, focus is now on how the pink ball will behave. BCCI has asked SG, the makers of the red balls used in first-class cricket in India, to provide 72 new balls for the Test match against Bangladesh that is scheduled to be played at Eden Gardens from November 22.

TOI has learned that the Indian team management has asked for balls that behave similar to how the red balls do in India. Confirming the development, SG’s director Paras Anand told TOI: “We have taken feedback from the players. Our thought process is to make the pink ball as similar to red ball as possible.”

The major problem with the pink ball is retaining the color and shape of the ball. In this case, retaining reverse swing – a phenomenon which is an intricate part of how Test cricket is played in this part of the world – is a huge challenge.

“The red ball has a dark color. That allows the players to shine the ball to help it swing all day. Pink ball already start with a bright color. Balancing that is something that we are working on,” Anand revealed, adding that the balls would be sporting the traditional pronounced seam.

Once the lacquer of a regular red ball wears off, teams usually shine one side of the ball while the other side is allowed to lose its colour and get scuffed up.

The Indian team management has rallied around its incisive pace attack even on Indian pitches and reverse swing has played a key part in the pacers’ stellar show. With the Eden pitch likely to be wearing more grass than usual and with dew likely to have some impact in the evening, spinners won’t be expected to play the lead role.

The balls are likely to be delivered to BCCI by next week. That leaves the board to give the Test specialists- like Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara – enough time to get used to the balls.

Interestingly, the Indian team had complained about the quality of red balls last year. However, Anand believes that they have resolved the issue. “We have made the balls harder and the Indian team gave a positive feedback. We have tried to replicate the hardness in the pink balls as well,” Anand claimed.

When the BCCI had decided in 2016 to use the Duleep Trophy as a platform to test the pink balls, the survey wasn’t very encouraging. A member of the Indian team who has played with the pink ball told TOI: “The ball lost color drastically. Picking it up got difficult, especially at twilight, and the spinners found it very soft after 30 overs. It was difficult to derive bounce and zip off the pitch.”

However, the BCCI cricket operations team’s failure to host Duleep Trophy with pink balls this year- something present BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had strongly advocated as the then chairman of the technical committee – has created a sense of uncertainty albeit there are plans to host some of the matches in the upcoming first-class season under lights.

Anand claims that SG has studied the behavior of the pink balls for two years and come up with an improved version. “Every brand has its strengths and weakness according to the conditions available in host countries. We have tried to balance out the amount lacquer and coating needed on the balls,” he remarked.

Saha expects Indian pacers to call the shots in D-N Test

0

This being the maiden day/night Test for both countries, neither Bangladesh nor India cricketers are sure of what to expect in the first-ever pink-ball Test on Indian soil, at Eden Gardens from November 22. Among the handful of Indian players in the current Test team to have played pink ball cricket are Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammad Shami.

Both were part of the Mohun Bagan team which routed Bhawanipore Club in the CAB Super League final at Eden in 2016 – the first four-day match to be played with pink balls in India. Recalling that game, Saha said the ball swung quite a bit. “That match, however, was played with the Kookaburra ball. This time it will be SG. So it can be different,” Saha told ToI on Wednesday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman feels the Indian pacers will call the shots in the second Test. “We expect the ball to swing more under lights and given the form our pacers are in, they will enjoy the conditions,” he said.

Saha remembered once the pink ball got old, it was sometimes difficult to pick it. “Yes, sighting was a bit of a problem once the ball got old and dirty. Especially during the twilight period, it can be challenging,” he remarked.

The 2016 match was played in June, so this time Saha felt they have to take into consideration the dew factor too. “Dew is expected in November. it is a major factor and it should also be taken into consideration,” he added.

Saha will be attending a camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Thursday. “We are delighted but I haven’t got to associate with my India teammates about the day-night Test. Will get to discuss it in the next few days. We won’t have much preparation time. Hence we need to plan and adjust fast,” he opined.

Breaking: Maxwell takes indefinite break from cricket

0

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided to take a break from cricket, owing to difficulties experienced by him with regards to his mental health, the team psychologist Dr. Michael Lloyd confirmed on Thursday. D’Arcy Short has been roped in as Maxwell’s replacement for the last T20I against Sri Lanka.

“Glenn Maxwell has been experiencing some difficulties with regards to his mental health. As a result, he will spend a short time away from the game. Glenn was proactive in identifying these issues and engaging with support staff,” Lloyd said.

Maxwell’s decision was met with a lot of empathy from within the cricket board, as executive general manager of national teams, Ben Oliver stated that the well-being of the players and staff was a priority.

“The well-being of our players and staff is paramount. Glenn has our full support. Cricket Australia will work collaboratively with Cricket Victoria’s support staff to ensure Glenn’s well-being and his reintegration into the game. We ask that everyone gives Glenn and his family and friends space; and respects their privacy at this time,” Oliver said.

“He’s a special player and an important part of the Australian cricket family. We hope to see him back in the team during the summer. It’s important we look after Glenn and all our players.”
