South Africa bans alcohol sales again to combat Covid-19

South Africa has introduced new restrictions, including another ban on alcohol sales, to help contain the spread of coronavirus.

A night-time curfew has been imposed, and the wearing of masks outdoors is now compulsory.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the alcohol ban – South Africa’s second this year – would take the pressure off the national healthcare system, the BBC reported.

It comes as total infections exceed a quarter of a million.

Deaths resulting from coronavirus have also risen to more than 4,000, and government projections estimate this could rise to 50,000 by the end of the year.

South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, and earlier this week recorded its highest-ever single-day increase in cases. Nearly half of them were in Gauteng, a province that’s become the outbreak epicenter.

In a public address, Ramaphosa acknowledged “most” people had taken action to help prevent the spread, but he said there were still some who acted “without any responsibility to respect and protect each other”.

“There are a number of people who have taken to organizing parties, who have drinking sprees, and some who walk around crowded spaces without wearing masks,” said the president.

Ramaphosa said the new measures were being introduced to help the country to weather the storm of coronavirus, and a state of emergency would be extended until August 15. The night-time ban would be in place from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The government has also made 28,000 hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients. But President Ramaphosa said the country still faced a “serious” shortage of more than 12,000 healthcare workers, including nurses, doctors, and physiotherapists.

The alcohol ban comes just weeks after another three-month ban was lifted in an effort to prevent drunken fighting, cut domestic violence, and eliminate weekend binge-drinking prevalent across South Africa.

Doctors and police say the previous ban contributed to a sharp drop in emergency admissions to hospital. But the country’s brewers and winemakers complained they were being driven out of business.

21 injured in US Navy ship fire in San Diego

A total of 21 people, including 17 sailors and four civilians, were injured in a fire on a US Navy ship at Naval Base San Diego in California, authorities said.

The injured are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital after the fire onboard USS Bonhomme Richard, according to the Naval Surface Forces, US Pacific Fleet, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.

“The entire crew is off the ship and all are accounted,” tweeted the Naval Surface Forces, adding that all import ships have been contacted and directed to provide fire parties to possibly assist with firefighting efforts.

Around 160 sailors were aboard the ship when the fire was called away at approximately 8.30 a.m. local time, according to the tweets.

Officials said that local, base, and shipboard firefighters are responding to the three-alarm fire and two military ships near USS Bonhomme Richard have shifted berths to a pier further away from the fire.

USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability and has a crew size of around 1,000, the US Navy said.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said that it is assisting on the fire onboard the Navy ship, adding the department is working in unified command with federal firefighters to put out the blaze.

Pictures from the scene showed plumes of smoke rising up over the deck of the ship.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. Some people at the scene were quoted as saying by local news outlets that they had heard an explosion. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department tweeted earlier in the morning, “Explosion with at least one injury at the USS Bonhomme Richard.”

USS Bonhomme Richard is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship home-ported in San Diego.

To do all of these things and be entertaining at the same time, and also have comedic moments, it feels like I was a part of something that’s never been done before,” she added.

With “Watchmen”, Damon Lindelof brings to life a series that embraces the nostalgia of the original graphic novel of the same name. Also starring Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Tim Blake Nelson, “Watchmen” explores the complexities of society while examining different real issues across time periods.

The series takes place in an alternate contemporary reality in the US, wherein superheroes and masked vigilantes were outlawed due to their violent methods, but some of them gather around to start a revolution while others attempt to stop it. It questions the notion of heroes and tries to connect the dots between a fictional take of real events.

Her character in the show, Sister Knight, has a mask on — which has found a new meaning in the post-COVID-19 era.

“So Patti sent me that picture of me wearing the mask and said to me ‘who knew that your costume was going to be our grocery store attire’. And I do step out for groceries. It is funny because of ‘Watchmen’ coming out not too long ago, people are looking for my eyes so I feel like I am being recognized even more now in the store with the mask on,” she said while opening up on the show that aired in India on Star World.

Soon after the news became public, wishes of speedy recovery started pouring in.

Florida sets new record for daily coronavirus cases

The US state of Florida reported 15,299 new coronavirus cases, shattering not only its own previous single-day records but also those of any other state as the pandemic continued to rage in the country.

The mind-boggling number brought the total infections to 269,811 in the Sunshine State, with the death toll reaching 4,346, according to the Florida Department of Health on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The recent surge was the result of increased testing and widespread transmission as the state prematurely loosened lockdown measures, as a result of which people were seen gathering in crowds, no longer heeding anti-virus guidelines such as maintaining social distance or wearing face coverings.

Out of the 2,574,007 tests conducted as of Sunday, 269,811 returned positive. Meanwhile, the number of hospitalizations is also rising at an eye-popping rate, registering 18,271 in total on Sunday.

As for the positivity rate, another key parameter, the number ranged from 12.24 percent to 18.36 percent during the past two weeks, indicating that the virus is far from being brought under control.

Commenting on the positivity rate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said during a Saturday press briefing that it is “something we’re looking at very seriously,” adding that if the rate “gets into the single digits, that’s something that’s a lot more manageable.”

In the meantime, however, the governor doubled down on his call for reopening schools, echoing a similar demand from President Donald Trump.

“People say, ‘kids may be the vectors then, in the community’ … but it’s been found over and over again, as people have looked at this and studied this, particularly in Europe, that the school children aren’t vectors for this, for whatever reason,” DeSantis said. “They usually get infected by their parents. They’re usually not infecting adults.”

Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, a Democrat, told CNN in an interview Saturday that schools should give parents the option of continuing online education for their kids “if they so desire,” and that when to reopen schools should primarily be the parents’ decision.

Despite the surge, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando opened its Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom sites Saturday, asking visitors to wear masks and adhere to other safety measures. Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, also part of the amusement park complex, will reopen on July 15.

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan tested positive for coronavirus earlier on Saturday and are admitted to hospital, both of them revealed in tweets on Saturday night. Sandalwood actor Chiranjeevi Sarja happens to be the nephew of south Indian actor Arjun Sarja. He died on Sunday in Bengaluru. Sagar Apollo hospitals confirmed his death. In a statement, the hospital stated that the actor was brought to the hospital at around 2.20 pm on Sunday in a non-responsive state. On examination of him, the doctors could not feel any pulse and that his pupils were extremely dilated. Doctors did try to resuscitate him but were unable to revive him.

Family members said that he was healthy and would work out during the lockdown. Sources at the hospital said that he was brought to their premises in an unconscious state. His body is currently at Sagar Apollo Hospital and will be handed over to the Jayanagar Police for an autopsy.

Chiranjeevi Sarja was born in Bengaluru on October 17, 1984. He did his schooling in Baldwin Boys High School Bengaluru and then graduated from Vijaya College.

He began his career as an assistant director for his uncle Arjun Sarja’s movies for four years, Chiranjeevi made his Sandalwood acting debut with the lead role in 2009. Family members said he was healthy and doing workouts during the lockdown.

Chiranjeevi Sarja was no doubt a promising actor.

Sources claim that Chiranjeevi did complain of severe chest pain and respiratory problems on Saturday and was rushed to the Sagar Hospital in Jayanagar.

Chiranjeevi Sarja made his Kannada film debut in the 2009 movie Vaayuputra. He was successful in having a huge fan following with the success of Varadanayaka (2013), in which he acted along with Nikesha Patel. He also shared screen space with Sudeep. Prior to that, he had rather worked with Arjun Sarja for about four years as an assistant director.

Chiranjeevi had won the Best Debutant Actor Award for his role in Vayuputra. After that, he did star in a series of films such as Dandam Dasghanum, Varadanayaka, Vishal, Chandralekha, Ajith, Rudratandava, Player, Ramalila, She, Samhara, Ziesar.

Actor Aayaam Mehta says he remembered his late father while enacting a death sequence in the TV show “Qurbaan Hua”.

“Our work and talent at times require us to literally step into the shoes of our character to be able to enact that one scene that would overwhelm our viewers,” said Aayaam.

“We recently shot a sequence in the show where my daughter Saraswati passes away and as her father, I am emotionally hit but being in a state of shock, my character freezes and is not able to channel his tears and express grief. The scene required an authentic emotion and at that moment I connected it to the time when I was a kid and I had lost my father,” he added.

Just like his character, he was emotionally blocked and unable to express it. Recalling that difficult time helped him bring out the sincerity required for that scene in a better manner.

Aayaam said: “At times, we might not be able to connect difficult sequences with our lives, but you still have to imagine that such a tragedy has happened to you and then the true emotions come out. Having said that, as actors we have to learn to not let ourselves get carried away, else it can affect you personally. It important to have a sense of awareness that those emotions are just for a scene.”

“Qurbaan Hua” is returning with fresh episodes on Zee TV on July 13.

Four children among 8 killed in Arunachal landslides

At least eight people, including four children, from two families, were buried alive and three injured in two separate landslides in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday. Officials said that the two landslides triggered by incessant rain during the past few days occurred in Papum Pare district and at Modirijo in between Itanagar and Naharlagun.

Officials said that the first landslide occurred at Tigdo village in Papum Pare district at around 2.30 a.m. on Friday when the victims were asleep, killing four people, including an eight-month-old baby and a 17-year-old boy, on the spot. The Papum Pare district administration and police, assisted by locals, retrieved the four bodies from the debris.

In the second landslide, four more people including two children were killed when their house was buried by a huge mudslide at Modirijo in between Itanagar and Naharlagun. Disaster management personnel helped by local people have recovered three bodies so far while a rescue operation to retrieve the fourth body was still on. Three children were also injured in the second landslide.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed deep shock and sorrow over the loss of lives in the landslides and announced an ex-gratia of Rs four lakhs for the next of kin of the deceased.

Khandu in a statement said that the incessant rain for the last couple of days that triggered landslides and floods has caused devastation in the entire state. “Reports have been pouring in about landslides in various locations from in and around the capital region. Road communication has been badly affected by nature’s fury and there is an increase in water flow in streams and rivers,” he added.

The Chief Minister cautioned that as per the Indian Meteorological Department, there is a likelihood of heavy rainfall in the next few days across Arunachal Pradesh. He requested the people to take all precautionary measures and refrain from staying at vulnerable locations.

Khandu directed the district administration and the disaster management department to continuously monitor the situation to avoid large scale devastation and loss of lives.

Late Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar has taken to social media to share her experience of traveling to the North-East with her husband for his film “Qarib Qarib Singlle” in 2017.

Sutapa shared some beautiful photographs of river Teesta in North Bengal, a throwback photo from Irrfan’s young age, and a photograph featuring herself and son Babil.

“It’s one of those days #nostalgia #northbengal. I wish I lived near a river than the sea. The rains have taken a small back seat and yet the fragrance from the wet soil and breeze takes me back to north Bengal and those of you are not familiar with Bengal should know north Bengal is NOT west Bengal.”

Irrfan Khan passed away in Mumbai on April 29 this year after battling colon infection for a while. The actor is survived by his wife Sutapa and sons Babil and Ayaan.

Applications per job up 48% amid Covid-19 in India: Report

Rate of applications per job has now increased by 48 percent in India compared to average applications per job in the pre-COVID period, said a report by online hiring platform QuikrJobs on Friday.

The situation is worse in metro cities as QuikrJobs saw a greater increase in the rate of applications per job in these areas, compared to job applications in non-metro areas, according to the report titled “Impact of Covid-19 on the Blue-Collar Industry in India”.

There was a significant increase in applications per job as compared to pre-COVID for roles like a data entry/back office (115 percent), delivery executives (139 percent), driver (122 percent), teacher (108 percent), marketing (179 percent) and sales (187 percent), said the report.

Owing to international flight cancellations and restriction on entry/exit of people by many countries, “Work Abroad” jobs saw a 65 percent dip in applications from job-seekers.

This report analyzed job listings by recruiters and job applications by job-seekers as seen on the QuikrJobs platform from January till March 15 as pre-COVID period and March 16 till the end of May 2020 as COVID lockdown period.

The data showed that the availability of a blue-collar workforce has increased significantly as compared to the availability of jobs.

QuikrJobs witnessed a dip in both jobs and applicants during the lockdown, especially in April.

However, the overall applications for blue-collar job roles saw a 108 percent growth in applications and a 36 percent increase in the availability of jobs in May as compared to April.

Roles that can be classified as “Work from Home” is currently the most preferred option for many job-seekers saw an increase in the salary offered, said the report.

Google empowers 5,000 Cloud employees in ethical AI

Google has trained over 5,000 employees who were part of its customer-facing Cloud teams in asking critical questions to spot potential ethical issues, such as whether an AI application might lead to economic or educational exclusion or cause physical, psychological, social, or environmental harm.

In addition to launching the initial ‘Tech Ethics’ training that over 800 Googlers have taken since its launch last year, Google developed new training for AI Principles issue spotting.

“We piloted the course with more than 2,000 Googlers, and it is now available as an online self-study course to all Googlers across the company,” the company said on Thursday.

Google recently released a version of this training as a mandatory course for customer-facing Cloud teams and 5,000 Cloud employees have already taken it.

“Our goal is for Google to be a helpful partner not only to researchers and developers who are building AI applications but also to the billions of people who use them in everyday products,” said the tech giant.

The company said it has released 14 new tools that help explain how responsible AI works, from simple data visualizations on the algorithmic bias for general audiences to ‘Explainable AI’ dashboards and tool suites for enterprise users.

The global efforts this year included new programs to support non-technical audiences in their understanding of, and participation in, the creation of responsible AI systems, whether they are policymakers, first-time ML (machine learning) practitioners or domain experts, said Google.

“We know no system, whether human or AI-powered, will ever be perfect, so we don’t consider the task of improving it to ever be finished. We continue to identify emerging trends and challenges that surface in our AI Principles reviews,” said Google.

Yediyurappa to work from home as staffers test positive

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa would work from his official residence for a few days, as some staff at his home office have tested Covid-19 positive, an official said on Friday.

The Chief Minister, who had not come in contact with the infected staffers, took to Twitter to announce that he was healthy.

“Yediyurappa, 78, will work from his official residence ‘Cauvery’ for some days after some staff members at his home-office ‘Krishna’ tested positive for the virus,” an official of the Chief Minister’s Office told IANS here.

The staffers include a driver and an electrician.

The Chief Minister has canceled all official engagements till further notice and will hold video conferences with ministers and officials on Covid-19 and other issues.

In a tweet in Kannada, he said: “I am healthy. No one needs anyone to worry about me. I will give advice and issue instructions through video conference from home.”

The Chief Minister’s meeting with lawmakers of the city on Friday to review the measures to contain the pandemic was canceled.

“The home-office in upscale High Grounds was also shut on June 19 for sanitization after the husband of a woman constable on security duty tested positive,” the official said.

Yediyurappa is likely to move to his own house at Dollar’s Colony in the city’s northern suburb on Saturday, as government offices will be closed on the second Saturday and total lockdown will be observed on Sunday to contain the virus spread.

“He will continue to work from home. Visitors will not be allowed to meet him at home to maintain physical distancing. All meetings will be through video-conference,” said the official.
