David Warner Makes Young Fan’s Day With Brilliant Gesture

0

The ball-tampering scandal had hit Australian cricket hard but they have turned things around swiftly and look to be returning to their best. Australia has been nothing short of exceptional in the past few months, winning hearts of Aussie fans all over the globe with their on-field performances. Not just on the field, Australian cricketers seem to be doing the right things off the field as well. On Tuesday, a video started doing the rounds on Twitter where Australia opener David Warner can be doing some batting practice, and as the left-hander makes his way off the ground, he is seen handing his bat to a young fan in the crowd.

Cricket Australia chief Kevin Roberts posted the video on his official Twitter handle with the likes of Dean Jones reacting to it.

On Monday, Australia crushed New Zealand by 279 runs in the Sydney Test to claim a 3-0 series sweep.

Pixel Phones Start Receiving January 2020 Android Security Patch

0

Google has begun the rollout of a new software update for its Pixel phone lineup that brings the January Android security patch. Following a surprisingly delayed security patch update for the Pixel phones in the past couple of months, Google is finally back to releasing the Android security patches at the beginning of a month. The January Android security update has been rolled out for the Pixel 4, Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, Pixel 2, and their respective XL variants. The update also brings a fix for the color shift issue at lower brightness level on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL and adds Smooth Display support for the WeChat app on Google’s latest phones.

The Google Android Pixel Security Update support page mentions that all supported Pixel devices running Android 10 (except the first-gen Pixel and Pixel XL) will get the January Android security patch as part of the January 2020 OTA update. Talking about the changes, the new update brings speaker audio quality improvements during voice calls on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, while sound quality during video capture has also received a boost on the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL duo. Additionally, the January 2020 OTA update has introduced smooth display support for the WeChat app, which means the app’s interface will now be smoother on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL’s 90Hz display.

The more notable change is a fix for the color-shifting issue at lower brightness levels on the Pixel 4 XL. It caused the display to produce an unnatural color tone and created weird shadows with a green or red color cast in some cases when the brightness was set below the 30 percent or lower mark. The January 2020 update for the Pixel 4 XL claims to resolve the color shift issue. Additionally, it fixes a host of other problems associated with notification display in UI, the flashlight toggle function, Wi-Fi crash, and connectivity issues.

Coach Justin Langer to rest for the upcoming ODI series against India

0

After a triumphant and unbeaten summer, Australia head coach Justin Langer will be taking a short break when his side travels to India for the upcoming three-match ODI series. In his absence, senior assistant Andrew McDonald will be taking over the top job for the three ODIs. This will be the former all-rounder’s first assignment as head coach of the national side.

“He’s an excellent coach, we’ve got other excellent coaches to back him up,” Sydney Morning Herald quoted Langer as saying.

“I’m so confident in our coaching staff now with the cricket side of things. A lot of the time now I think about the cricket 30 percent of the time, the rest of the time all the other stuff that goes with it: the bigger picture, the cultural stuff,” Langer added.

Under Langer’s watch, Australia smashed Pakistan 2-0 and then went on to New Zealand 3-0 in the two-Test series. However, they will be challenged in India by the hosts, who are currently involved in a limited-overs series.

JNU Violence: Police Investigation Intensifies, Arrests Expected Soon

0

According to media reports, students of both Akhil Bharatiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP) and those aligned with Left parties appear to be involved in the violence which rocked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday. Outsiders are also said to be involved and are being identified by the cops. The Delhi police have filed 4 FIRs in the case which is being probed by the Crime Branch. The cops have filed the case on charges of unlawful assembly, rioting with armed weapons, damage to public property and disturbance of public peace.

According to the JNU administration, the trigger for protests initially was the boycott call of exams following which the registration process was hampered. This led to scuffles between those blocking registration and others supporting it—both from the two divergent groups. This is being cited as the starting point of trouble on the JNU campus. Police have booked the JNUStudents Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh, along with 19 others for vandalizing the server room in an incident which took place on January 4.

Media reports state quote Delhi police sources as saying that on Sunday, the Periyar hostel was attacked first, followed by a retaliatory confrontational Sabarmati hostel where 20 students were injured. Police are said to be closely scrutinizing social media communication including WhatsApp chats. Police are also scanning CCTV footage and videos which went viral after the violence on the campus, as also the register at the main gate. Though no arrests have been made yet it is likely that some would be made soon after identification of the miscreants. Meanwhile, the students of Left parties continued to point a finger at ABVP, while the student’s wing of BJP is blaming SFI and other Left student organizations.

Delhi Assembly Elections 2020: AAP Emerges Front-Runner

0

The elections to Delhi state assembly scheduled for February 8, will see a three-way fight, with not many surprises on the cards. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), energized by its performance and cohesion in its ranks, is the front runner. In all likelihood, Arvind Kejriwal will power AAP to victory, when results are announced on February 11. The BJP, smarting from the loss of Jharkhand, which came after its failure to form a government in Maharashtra, is trying to put its best foot forward. Meanwhile, the Congress is on an upswing after its victories in assembly elections including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh towards the end of 2018 and its recent successes in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, where it managed to stay on the winning side.

AAP’s biggest strength is its performance in Delhi and the appeal it has across its voter base in the national capital. However, as much as it tried, it could not expand its base beyond Delhi and has had very little success even in the neighboring states of Haryana and Punjab. AAP is showcasing its report card of 5 years based on its performance. This includes higher budgets for health and education, its water and electricity supply schemes and the work it has done in unauthorized colonies.

The BJP is relying on the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but it has had limited success in assembly elections since the end of 2018. It also hopes that its promise of regularisation of unauthorized colonies will pay off. However, it does not have a strong leader on the ground and is counting more on its national stalwarts. Neither Manoj Tiwari nor Vijay Goel enjoy widespread support or have the appeal to lead their party to victory. The Congress, banking on Subhash Chopra’s leadership, is missing Sheila Dixit’s presence at the top in the national capital. The party could end up as an also-ran in this three-horse race.

AUS Vs NZ: Clinical Australia whitewash hapless New Zealand

0

Nathan Lyon’s second fifer of the game, following David Warner’s record 24th Test century, scripted Australia’s comfortable 279-run victory at the SCG to round off their summer with a thumping 3-0 series sweep over New Zealand on Monday (January 6).

Mitchell Starc and Lyon took two apiece shortly after Australia’s declaration to trigger a fatal top-order collapse, and despite Colin de Grandhomme’s counter-attacking fifty, New Zealand’s resistance lasted less than 48 overs combined in Sydney. Set to chase 416, the visitors slipped to 38 for 5 and surrendered for 136 eventually with Matt Henry not coming out to bat to prevent aggravating his broken thumb.

The collapse began rather early, with Starc taking out both the openers in his successive overs. Tom Blundell was the first to depart, nailing a square drive off a juicy half-volley but straight to Lyon at backward point who pulled off a stunning, diving catch to make up for the two dropped chances on Day 3. New Zealand had barely added a run more to their score when Tom Latham was trapped LBW. The New Zealand stand-in skipper challenged the on-field call but “umpire’s call” on impact meant Marais Erasmus’s decision stood, leaving New Zealand two-down for just four runs on the board.

Tim Paine brought Lyon on – the wrecker-in-chief from the first innings – in the tenth over and he vindicated the move by inducing an edge off Jeet Raval. However, believing that he hadn’t nicked the ball, the New Zealand No. 3 challenged Aleem Dar’s call, only to be proven wrong. Moments later, in an action replay of sorts, Glenn Philips too was left embarrassed by the Snickometer that revealed a faint edge. The tourists lost both batsmen and their reviews on 22.

Unbeaten on 12, Ross Taylor was New Zealand’s primary hope going into Tea. The former captain surpassed Stephen Fleming’s tally of 7172 runs when on 22, to become New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in the format but couldn’t add much more to it as James Pattinson castled him with a peach, much similar to his first-innings dismissal.

At 38 for 5, when all hope seemed lost, de Grandhomme counter-attacked. He kept Australia at bay for the next 23 overs, putting on a nearly one-sided 69-run partnership with BJ Watling for the sixth wicket. The all-rounder raised a quick fifty with a six off Lyon but in an attempt to go aerial again, holed out to Burns off the very next delivery. The wicket opened the floodgates, even though Todd Astle briefly entertained with his cameo of 17 off 18 to delay the inevitable. Starc yorked out William Somerville for 7, and then Lyon went on to complete his ten-wicket match haul – and with that, the formalities – by ending Watling’s 108-ball vigil on 19 runs.

Earlier in the day, Warner converted his overnight partnership with Burns to 107 and then added 110 more with Marnus Labuschagne to stretch Australia’s lead to 420 before the home team declared their second innings. On an overcast morning and a probable target of 450 in mind, a comfortable overnight lead of 243 and all ten wickets intact afforded Warner and Burns the liberty to attack from the word go.

In fact, quick runs were the mantra evident Labuschagne’s quick scoring as the home team sought declaration at the earliest. While Warner looked to fetch some quick runs via boundaries, Burns dealt in sixes – hitting both New Zealand spinners for one each before departing for 39. Warner meanwhile raised his 31st Test half-century, off only 82 deliveries.

New Zealand’s only success came nearly an hour into the day’s play when Todd Astle followed up the classic leg-spin delivery with a well-disguised wrong’un to fox Burns out at the stroke of the drinks break. The Australian opener completely failed to read the googly that was pitched on the off and spun back into the batsman who was beaten on the inside edge. Denied the loud LBW appeal, confident New Zealand took the call upstairs and three reds on the ball-tracking forced Aleem Dar to overturn his original call.

Warner went past current coach Justin Langer’s tally of 23 Test tons with his 24th that came shortly after Lunch. Meanwhile, Labuschagne, dropped on 4 when Astle failed to take the return catch, made New Zealand pay by adding 55 more to his tally. He sacrificed his wicket for the team’s cause, uncharacteristically going for a glory shot and getting caught at long-on. The dismissal prompted Tim Paine to declare, leaving Warner unbeaten on 111. The hosts, however, were docked a penalty of five runs for both Warner and Labuschagne were warned for running on the pitch during the fag end of their second-wicket stand.

Brief scores: Australia 454 (MArnus Labuschagne 214, Steven Smith 63; Neil Wagner 3-66, Colin de Grandhomme 3-78) and 217/2 decl (David Warner 111*, Marnus Labuschagne 59; Matt Henry 1-54, Todd Astle 1-41)beat New Zealand 256 (Glenn Phillips 52, Tom Latham 49; Nathan Lyon 5-68) and 136 (Colin de Grandhomme 52, Nathan Lyon 5-50)by 279 runs.

No Cops, Street Lights Go Out, As Masked Men Attack JNU

0

A day after masked goons armed with iron rods, sledgehammers and bottles barged into Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University and went on a brutal rampage, questions have been raised on the role of the police and on details that have emerged like the streetlights going off during the worst of the attack. Around 50 attackers in masks, carrying weapons, not just entered the campus but had a free run for three hours, unstopped by either the police or the administration.

This morning, Delhi Police criticized over its conduct, released a statement saying it had received “multiple complaints” and had filed one case clubbing all. The police also said some of the attackers had been identified and the case has been handed over to the Crime Branch. But no arrests have been made till now.

At least 34 people, including students and faculty, were injured in the JNU attack. While students have alleged the role of the ABVP, the BJP-linked student group has flung the allegation right back at Left-backed groups.

Horrifying visuals show a group armed with sticks and iron rods entering the campus. In the photos, taken at around 6.45 pm, the individuals are seen walking in single file near a bus stop on the campus.

Usually, multiple security guards are posted at each gate of the university spread over a 1,000-acre area; they are supposed to record the movement of students and vehicles entering and exiting the campus.

It is not known how the attackers entered JNU with weapons. If they were spotted, then why weren’t they stopped? The attackers went from hostel to hostel beating students and teachers.

Students and activists have also hit out at Delhi Police’s delayed reaction.

“The police had been on the campus since afternoon, but they did nothing,” Saket Moon, the Vice President of the JNU Students Union, said in the aftermath of the attack.

A JNU professor injured in the attack said stones used by the mob were “big stones that could have broken our skulls”, raising more questions about how armed attackers were allowed to enter.

The assaults were not just perpetrated on students and professors; politician-activist Yogendra Yadav was also one of those injured. In a Facebook post, Mr Yadav said he was attacked thrice and “the police (just) watched”.

Many have wondered why the Delhi Police failed to intervene and stop the mob for three hours, and how the attackers could slip away without any arrests or detentions.

A flag march was conducted by the cops only hours after the violence broke out; the police were met with furious students shouting “Delhi Police, go back”.

This latest attack on students has further increased tension between the national capital’s student community and the police force, following the latter’s brutal crackdown on students from Jamia Millia Islamia during a protest against the controversial citizenship law.

The fact that street lights were switched off during the attack has also been flagged. This is not the first time this has happened in incidents involving JNU students. In November street lights in South Delhi were switched off before Delhi Police allegedly lathi-charged students protesting a hike in fees.

Hurt and angry students have also hit out at Vice-Chancellor Jagadeesh Kumar, whose resignation they have demanded, describing him as a “henchman” who perpetuates violence on students.

This morning Mr Kumar told students “they need not fear” and that the “top priority” of the university was to protect the students’ academic interests.

This latest violent attack on JNU students comes after sustained involvement by the student community in protests against contentious issues, such as the university administration’s decision to hike hostel fees and the amendments to the citizenship law.

The attack has also spurred student communities across India into action, with thousands taking to the streets last night and this morning to protest the brutal treatment of their counterparts.

Intel Teased Comet Lake-H 10th Gen and Tiger Lake 10nm Laptop CPUs

0

Intel has teased a few details of some of its upcoming CPUs for various consumer product segments, just a day before its official CES 2020 press conference and the opening of the show. The news comes only in the form of teaser, and concerns the next generations of CPUs for some laptop segments, a new high-performance NUC compact PC, the future of the Athena laptop design program, and overall platform AI capabilities. More details about most of these products and initiatives can be expected to be announced during Intel’s CES 2020 keynote, scheduled for Monday afternoon in Las Vegas (early morning in IST).

The highest-profile teaser was for the next refresh of H-series Intel Core CPUs for mainstream and high-performance laptops. The upcoming 10th generation will be based on the Comet Lake architecture, which we have already seen on the U-series for slim laptops. This is a 14nm architecture, and no launch date has yet been announced.

What Intel has said so far is that the upcoming Comet Lake-H CPU lineup will include Core i7 models running above 5GHz, and Core i9 models that are even faster. This generation will also feature multiple models with eight cores and Hyper-Threading, though it isn’t clear exactly which product tiers will get this number of cores and threads, or for that matter how the overall lineup will be segmented.

Intel showed off a demo of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order running at the Epic graphics quality settings on a pre-production laptop with a 10th Gen Comet Lake-H CPU. Other specifications were not disclosed except that the laptop had a discrete GPU. The company emphasized that this was all in a relatively slim laptop body.

The next teaser was for a relatively compact Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) mini PC with a modular compute unit and the ability to host a desktop-sized graphics card. The upcoming Intel NUC 9 Extreme has a 5-liter chassis which makes it considerably larger than the usual palm-sized NUC PCs but is still very portable.

While detailed specifications were not announced, the Intel NUC 9 Extreme will be the first model in the series to use an unlocked Core i9 CPU (9th Gen) running at up to 5GHz, and also the first to be able to host a discrete graphics card. It does not require an external power supply. While the specific CPU model has not been disclosed, Intel touts “desktop performance and gaming” for this compact PC.

The modular unit seems to be a design idea called The Element that Intel showed off in late 2019. The Element is a unit designed somewhat like a larger version of a PC expansion card but is comprised of a CPU and motherboard as well as removable RAM and storage. The units, which look somewhat like oversized graphics cards, were touted at the time to be easy to deploy, upgrade, or replace. Using this form factor means that the NUC 9 Extreme could potentially be upgraded in the future.

Next, Intel touted over 20 design wins for its Project Athena initiative for extremely slim laptops, and that the company is very happy with its progress. A refreshed and updated program will be announced at the keynote.

Finally, Intel talked a little about Tiger Lake, the successor to Ice Lake. This will be Intel’s next 10nm architecture, but it is not yet clear whether it will be deployed for more than just some laptop segments. One key differentiator for Ice Lake and Tiger Lake has been AI acceleration, and the next generation will have multiple AI optimizations, which Intel is referring to as “AI Engines”.

The first of these is DL Boost, which takes advantage of what many companies including Adobe are building into their current software. Use cases include colorizing old photos, resolution upscaling, language processing, and content-aware composition of photos or video. Tiger Lake will have “significantly” beefed up DL Boost performance, and will also feature Intel’s brand new integrated Xe graphics which can also handle some types of compute acceleration called Int8. Finally, the third optimization centers around low-power acceleration for specific use cases.

More details can be expected through the week as CES 2020 progresses, and also later in 2020.

Case filed against Chandrababu Naidu for insulting Dalit IAS

0

A case has been registered against former AP CM and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu. YSRCP MLA Golla Babu filed a complaint at the Nakkapalli police station in Visakhapatnam for his insensitive remarks on IAS officer Vijay Kumar. “Naidu, who claims himself as forty years experienced has no respect for constitution and democracy,” MLA asserted. He warned of pulling Naidu to court.

IAS Vijay Kumar, the planning commission secretary, has interpreted the Boston committee report in favor of decentralization of administration. Naidu who could not sustain this resorted to abusing and making casteist remarks on the bureaucrat.

On Sunday, five cabinet ministers have written an open letter to former AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu slamming him for his insensitive comments against a Dalits. The ministers made clear that the BCG committee report was interpreted by Municipal Commissioner and Planning Commission secretary Vijay Kumar as an IAS, a government official and part of his duties. In the letter, the ministers demanded to render unconditional apologies to IAS Vijay Kumar.

Bookings Open For The BS6 Toyota Innova Crysta

0

Toyota has started bookings for the BS6 version of the Toyota Innova Crysta in India and the company says that it will be offered to consumers at a special celebratory price. The token amount for the booking is set at ₹ 50,000 and a few dealers we spoke to, in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai said that the deliveries of the BS6 Innova Crysta will only begin at the end of February 2020. The Innova Crysta is offered with two diesel – 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre – and of course there is the 2.7-liter petrol on offer as well. All these engines will make the transition to BS6.

The Innova Crysta has been a strong seller for the company even though it has been priced from ₹ 14.93 lakh to ₹ 22 lakh in India. The popularity of the car has not diminished as the dealers have said that almost all of their BS4 inventory has been sold, making the transition to the BS6 variant a smooth one.

Toyota is likely bringing in the diesel BS6 Innova Crysta with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology as well as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Of course, we know that Toyota offers the same 2.4-liter and 2.8-liter diesel engines in its international market portfolio and both these engines make use of AdBlue technology and we expect the Indian versions to be no different. While we wait to know more about the price of the BS6 Innova Crysta, we expect it to be pricier than before. So, there is a price hike for sure and it is likely to be in the ₹ 1 lakh quadrant.

A 108-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel telephoto lens with OIS, and a periscope-style camera module with 5x optical zoom will lead the imaging department. Camera features might include support for 8K video capture at 30fps, Director’s View, Night Hyperlapse, and Vertical Panorama among others. The phones’ curved Dynamic AMOLED display will reportedly sport a centrally-positioned hole-punch while the refresh rate is said to be 120Hz. As for the Galaxy Fold 2, it is tipped to feature a clamshell design akin to the Motorola Razr (2019), but details about its specifications are rather slim as of now.

NZ lost four wickets at Tea after Warner hundred and Australia declaration

0

Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon struck twice early to put Australia comfortably in the driver’s seat as New Zealand slipped to 27 for 4 at Tea in a chase of 416 to avoid a series whitewash, on Day 4 of the Sydney Test.

Set a revised target of 416, after Australia were imposed a five-run penalty for their batsmen running on the wicket, New Zealand lost both openers to the pace spearhead in his successive overs of the opening spell. Lyon, brought into the attack in the ninth over, also struck in his successive overs to have both Jeet Raval and Glenn Phillips caught behind as New Zealand sank deeper.

Tom Blundell was the first to depart, nailing a square drive of a juicy half-volley but straight to Nathan Lyon at backward point who pulled off a stunning, diving catch too, in a way, make up for the two dropped chances the previous day. New Zealand had barely added a run more to their score when Tom Latham was trapped LBW. The New Zealand stand-in skipper challenged the on-field call but “umpire’s call” on impact meant Marais Erasmus’s decision stood. New Zealand were down to 4 for 2 in no time.

Lyon picked up right from where he had left off in the first innings and had Raval nicking behind to the keeper. However, the batsmen believed he hadn’t edged and was convinced to take a review by Ross Taylor at the other end. He challenged Aleem Dar’s call, only to be proven wrong. Moments later, in an action replay of sorts, Philips was also left embarrassed by the Snickometer that revealed a faint edge. New Zealand lost both batsmen and their reviews on 22.

Taylor, batting on 12 off 33, has the lower order for company in this difficult task even as the whitewash seems more imminent now.

Earlier, Australia declared with a lead of 420 after David Warner raised his 24th Test century shortly into the second session of the day. Unbeaten on 89 at Lunch, the Australian opener marched into the 90s with back to back boundaries off Matt Henry before typically leaping in pure joy as he surpassed current coach Justin Langer’s tally of Test centuries for Australia. Two balls later, Labuschagne raised yet another fifty to add another milestone to his glorious summer.

Australia seemed set on declaring at 450 but when Labuschagne holed out to long-on, going for a glory shot for the team’s cause, Tim Paine declared. However, the home team was docked five runs from their lead of 420 for both Warner and Labuschagne were warned for running on the pitch towards the fag end of their 110-run partnership for the second wicket.

Brief scores: New Zealand 256 and 27/4 (Ross Taylor 12*; Mitchell Starc 2-8, Nathan Lyon 2-4) need 389 more to win with six wickets in hand.

Vitamin A supplementation program given every six months to infants and preschool children (from 9 months to 5 years of age) is resuming after a gap of nearly two years in Telangana. A special drive will commence from Monday (January 6) till January 20 under which nearly 38 lakh small children in 33 districts of the State will be given these drops.

Due to lack of stocks, Vitamin A doses were not kept available in all PHCs as well as State hospitals in districts for the whole of 2019. As such kids visiting the State hospitals, mostly from BPL and lower-income groups were not administered these doses. It may be mentioned here that millions of children under the age of 5 years are affected by Exophthalmia, a serious eye disorder that can be caused by moderate to severe deficiency and can lead to blindness.

Government of India’s National Programme for Prophylaxis against Blindness in children due to Vitamin A deficiency recommends for at least nine doses of vitamin A to be given to all children aged 9 to 59 months.

The first dose of 100,000 International Unit (IU) (one ml) is administered with measles vaccination at 9 months and subsequent doses of 200,000 IU each (two ml dose), every six months until kids reach 5 years of age. It also recommends for one dose of vitamin A on measles case identification, irrespective of whether it has previously been administered prophylactically or given as routine immunization. Prevalence of clinical and subclinical vitamin A deficiency in India is among the highest in the world which is why the Centre brought in this program.

The WHO (World Health Organisation) states that Vitamin A deficiency affects about 190 million preschool-age children, mostly from Africa and South-East Asia. According to health officials, Vitamin A bottle stocks have been sent to all districts a few days ago for taking up this program. They said dosages would be administered in PHCs, sub-centers, Anganwadi centers and ANMs and Asha workers would also take up field visits in their areas. A one-day workshop was also held at the district and Mandal level for smooth implementation of the drive.

IND Vs SL: First T20I abandoned due to wet patches on pitch

0

In the end, it wasn’t meant to be. The Assam Cricket Association had braved curfews, internet shut down and uncertainty in the lead up to the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka but eventually, an error ensured the game was called off without a ball being bowled. The groundstaff did exceptionally well to dry the ground but made a mistake while taking off the main cover once the rain stopped.

The water that had puddled up on the main cover slipped off from one of the corners and left one end of the pitch with pretty significant wet patches. The rain arrived at 6:46 PM local time and picked up within minutes to turn into a heavy downpour. A little over an hour was lost but the covers did come off in between before being brought back on. The first inspection was scheduled at 8:15 pm but it was soon rescheduled to 9 pm when the umpires noticed the wet patches on the track.

The inexperience of hosting games, in hindsight, had a say in the eventual abandonment. Take this for instance: when the covers over the bowler’s run-up were being removed, the ground staff hadn’t even started to clear the water over it. And hence small amounts of water did cascade out onto the field. The super soppers were able to repair that damage but the patches on the pitch were beyond repair.

Leading up to the 9 pm inspection, the ground staff – under the watchful eyes of fourth umpire Virendra Sharma and BCCI’s chief curator Ashish Bhowmick – used various methods to dry the patches. Once the covers were taken off, a vacuum cleaner was used first, followed by a few iron boxes and hair dryers. The ground staff then laid out a cloth over the pitch and used a light roller to solidify the area.

The 9 pm inspection was moved to 9:30 pm, but the umpires walked off dissatisfied after the final recce. The game was called off at 9:55 pm, ten minutes after the cut-off time from where a five-overs-per-side game would have been possible. The affected area was too soft and was around the wide-line mark for a left-handed batsman. It was dangerous for the bowlers as well, as they would not have gotten a strong foothold in their follow-through.

The decision to have a game was eventually on the umpires but they leaned on the side of caution and rightly so, according to the ICC Playing Conditions.

It was a shame really for the fans. Long queues were already in place from 3:30 pm onwards, even when the gates were supposed to open only an hour later. Even during the break, the DJ did an exceptional job of keeping the fans occupied. It all started with the fans cheering the super soppers working while it continued to pour. Once it had stopped raining, 90s Bollywood hits took over.

Virat Kohli’s three visits to inspect the pitch also brought out loud cheers, only for it to be intensified on the final occasion when he was accompanied by Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant. Harbhajan Singh, who was at the venue with the host broadcaster, too kept the fans enthralled with his dance moves as the repair work continued on the track.

In the end, the fireworks went off around 9:50 pm as the crowd started to leave the stadium. It wasn’t the fireworks they had come to watch, especially after Kohli had promised a high-scoring contest.

AUS Vs NZ: Australia extend lead in to the Post Lunch Session

New Zealand’s dismal tour of Australia had another session added to it with the hosts stretching their lead to 375 courtesy David Warner‘s unbeaten 89 at Lunch on Day 4 of the Sydney Test. Australia added 132 runs in the session, for the loss of Joe Burns’s wicket, to take pole position in their bid to inflict a series whitewash on the visitors.

in overcast conditions, and an overnight lead of 243 and with all wickets still in hand, Australia signaled their intent from ball 1. The unbeaten openers came out with an aggressive approach, with both Warner and Burns on the attack. Even Marnus Labuschagne looked to score off every ball he faced.

The opening pair continued from where they’d left off the previous evening and converted their start into a century partnership in no time.

Labuschagne joined hands with Warner in the middle and was among the runs off the second ball as the message from the dressing room was evident. Of his fifty partnership with Warner, the No. 3 batsmen had chipped in 33. Offered a reprieve as early as when he was on four – when Astle failed to pouch a simple return catch off his own bowling – Labuschagne went into the break with 36 against his name and having added 65 with Warner to the second wicket stand.

Brief scores: Australia454 and 172/1 (David Warner 89*, Marnus Labuschagne 36*; Todd Astle 1-41) lead New Zealand251, by 375 runs.

Irfan Pathan retires from all forms of cricket

Irfan Pathan announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, on January 4 (Saturday). The left-arm pacer played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is for India, picking a total of 301 international wickets.

Having made his debut as a 19-year-old, in Adelaide against Australia in December 2003, he returned 1 for 160 – with Matthew Hayden being his maiden international victim. However, he quickly rose to become a regular across formats in the Indian setup following an impressive show on the tour of Pakistan in 2004 and remained a vital cog in the mid-2000s.

Some of his best moments as a bowler came against Pakistan – a first-over Test hat-trick in 2006, a man of the match performance in the 2007 World T20 final, among many others.

He was also one of the finest all-rounders India has produced and has been promoted as an opener or a No 3 a few times for the team’s cause. In 29 Tests, he averaged 31.57 with the bat, including a century and six fifties in 40 innings.

In ODIs and T20Is, he averaged 23.39 and 24.57 respectively. One of his best all-round performances came against Australia in Perth, where he won the Man of the Match in India’s historic victory during the 2007-08 tour.

However, with his speed dropping and swing not being potent in the latter half of the 2000s, he found it difficult to make a place for himself in the side on a regular basis. He played his last Test against South Africa in 2008. He kept getting his chances in limited-overs but struggled to make the best use of it.

In 2012, he played his last ODI as well as T20I. Thereafter, his performances took a dip even in domestic cricket. He finishes with 384 first-class wickets, 272 in List A and 173 in T20s. Hailing from Baroda, and having played most of his cricket for BCA, he shifted base to Jammu & Kashmir as a professional last season.

The 35-year-old played his last IPL game in 2017 and went unpicked in the three auctions that followed.
