Facebook-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature to allow ShareChat users to play videos within its main app in the picture-in-picture mode.

Spotted by WABetaInfo that tracks WhatsApp in Beta, the support for the ShareChat video service is available in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS and Android.

“Latest updates officially support the possibility to play videos shared on ShareChat within WhatsApp,” the website said on Thursday.

Once you tap the play icon on a ShareChat video, WhatsApp will begin to reproduce the video in the picture-in-picture mode.

The functionality will be available on both WhatsApp for iOS and Android.

“To be sure to be on a compatible version, you should install the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.20.81.3 and WhatsApp beta for Android 2.20.197.7”.

The home-grown regional language social media app ShareChat has a user base of over 60 million monthly active users spread across the country and available in 15 languages, including Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Odia, Kannada, Assamese, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri and Urdu.

The Bengaluru-based regional language social platform has become so popular that even Twitter came on board when the four-year-old company raised $100 million in its Series D round of funding last year.

ShareChat said last month that its short video sharing platform Moj has crossed five million downloads from Google Play Store in just about a week since the beta version of the TikTok rival was released.

Twitter to now label state-controlled media accounts

0

Twitter has announced it would not amplify tweets by state-controlled media outlets and label the accounts of government-linked media, as well as key government officials from the five permanent member countries of the UN Security Council: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US.

The micro-blogging platform said the new labeling policy would include accounts of key government officials, including foreign ministers, institutional entities, ambassadors, official spokespeople, and key diplomatic leaders from these five countries.

“At this time, our focus is on senior officials and entities who are the official voice of the state abroad,” the company said in a statement late on Thursday.

The move will make affected accounts less likely to appear in search results or notifications.

Twitter will also label accounts belonging to state-affiliated media entities, their editors, and their senior staff.

The move will impact state-controlled media organizations like Russia’s RT and China’s Xinhua news agency.

In 2019, Twitter banned all state-backed media advertising and political advertising from Twitter.

“For transparency and practicality, we are starting with a limited and clearly-defined group of countries before expanding to a wider range of countries in the future,” said Twitter.

The company said that at this time, they are not labeling the personal accounts of heads of state, as these accounts enjoy widespread name recognition, media attention, and public awareness.

“Institutional accounts associated with their offices that changeover depending on election results will be labeled, however”.

However, state-financed media organizations with editorial independence, like the BBC in the UK or NPR in the US for example, will not be labeled.

“We will also no longer amplify state-affiliated media accounts or their Tweets through our recommendation systems including on the home timeline, notifications, and search,” Twitter announced.

Twitter will notify any account that’s labeled and if the “account owner believes we’ve made a mistake, they can reach out to us directly”.

After Google, Facebook tells staff to work from home till mid-2021

0

Facebook has told its 48,000-strong workforce to stay at home through July 2021 and is giving an additional $1,000 to each employee to buy supplies for a home office.

The social network had earlier allowed the staff to work remotely through the end of 2020.

“Based on guidance from health and government experts, as well as decisions drawn from our internal discussions about these matters, we are allowing employees to continue voluntarily working from home until July 2021.

“In addition, we are giving employees an additional $1,000 for home office needs,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying in The Verge on Thursday.

With the Covid-19 pandemic hardly showing any sign of slowing down, Google last month said it would allow its nearly 2 lakh employees to work from home till the middle of next year if their roles permit.

“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021, for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees.

Google had earlier set January 2021 as a tentative timeline for its workers to return to offices.

Twitter has allowed employees to work from home “forever” if they wish so.

In May, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out a detailed remote-working plan to make half of his workforce work from home by 2030.

According to him, about half of Facebook employees would work from home five to 10 years from now.

While Amazon and Apple expect their employees to return to their respective offices in January, most other tech companies also appeared to be hoping to work from home to last till the end of the year.

Facebook purges 1,800 fake accounts targeting domestic audiences

0

Facebook has removed nine networks consisting of nearly 1,800 accounts, Pages, and Groups from its main platform and Instagram that were involved in coordinated inauthentic behavior.

More than half of these networks focused on domestic audiences in their own countries, including in the US, Brazil, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen.

Much of the activity Facebook removed in July was linked to commercial entities and individuals associated with political campaigns and political offices, the social network said in a statement on Thursday.

In the US, Facebook removed 54 Facebook accounts, 50 Pages, and 4 Instagram accounts and linked the network to Roger Stone, a long-time Republican and trusted ally of US President Donald Trump.

“This network focused on domestic audiences. We first started looking into this network as part of our investigation into the Proud Boys’ attempts to return to Facebook after we had banned them from the platform,” said Facebook.

The company identified the full scope of this network following the recent public release of search warrants pertaining to the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in response to a joint petition from The New York Times, CNN, the Associated Press, The Washington Post, and Politico.

“Our investigation linked this network to Roger Stone and his associates,” the company said.

Facebook in July removed over 100 fake accounts and pages that were posting misinformation with links to Stone.

The company also purged 303 Facebook accounts, 181 Pages, 44 Groups and 31 Instagram accounts belonging to a network that operated from many regions around the world including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Germany, the UK, Finland, and France.

It targeted primarily English and Chinese-speaking audiences globally and Vietnam.

“Our investigation linked this network to Truthmedia, a digital media outlet, which is now banned from our platforms,” said Facebook.

Domestic campaigns like these, said Facebook, raise a particularly complex challenge by blurring the line between healthy public debate and manipulation.

Rhea Chakraborty may skip ED summons

Model-turned-actress Rhea Chakraborty, who has been accused of abetting late actor Sushant Singh Rajput to suicide, is unlikely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate officials, her lawyers indicated here on Friday.

“Rhea Chakraborty has requested a postponement of recording her statement till the Supreme Court hearing,” said her lawyers here. The Supreme Court is expected to hear next week Rhea’s plea seeking transfer of the Bihar Police probe to Mumbai Police.

Her name figures in FIRs lodged by both the Patna Police and the CBI. The investigation into the June 14 death of the 34-year-old actor has been handed over to the CBI and also the ECIR of the Enforcement Directorate, after much wrangling between the Mumbai Police and Sushant’s home state police.

Sushant’s father lodged the first FIR in the case against Rhea and six others on July 25 at the Rajiv Nagar police station in Patna.

Among other things, Sushant’s family has accused Rhea also of swindling large sums of money from his bank accounts.

The ED reaction to her request is not yet available.

Shivaleeka Oberoi on being an outsider in Bollywood

Budding actress Shivaleeka Oberoi admits it is not easy for an outsider to carve a path in Bollywood, and says that one needs to have immense self-belief to survive the journey.

“Honestly, it is not easy,” Shivaleeka told IANS, when asked how tough it is for an outsider to find a way and sustain in Bollywood, and then added: “But if you believe in yourself and if you are actually talented, and you reach the right places… I have a belief that you have to be in the right place at the right time. Destiny plays a very important role.”

“I never thought that I would be an actor. My mom is from a different line, my dad does something else and my sister does something else. I’m the only one in the acting field. My grandfather (Mahavir Oberoi) had produced a film once, but he passed away when my father was young, and since then we had no touch with the industry. I actually found my way, in terms of being on a film set, by becoming an assistant director. I gained maximum experience and knowledge by being an AD. It really helped me as an actor,” she added.

Before her debut as an actor, Shivaleeka worked as an assistant director on “Kick” and “Housefull 3”.

She made her acting debut in 2019 with the romantic thriller “Yeh Saali Aashiqui” opposite Amrish Puri’s grandson Vardhan Puri, and will next be seen in “Khuda Haafiz”, co-starring Vidyut Jammwal.

Looking back at her short journey so far, she said: “It was not easy. To be very honest, what comes easy does not last. My parents have always taught me that ‘jo bhi chaiyeh life mein uske liye hardwork karna padega’ (you have to work hard to achieve what you want).”

For Shivaleeka, that meant lots of auditions. “I have given an insane amount of auditions, and that’s how I bagged my first film, and then second. My role in ‘Khuda Haafiz’ is completely different from what I portrayed in my first film. It is a huge jump and people are going to see that variation.”

“Your versatility as an actor is the only thing that really matters in this industry. For me, being a complete outsider, I kind of felt that it is important to show different shades and a variation to your characters,” she said.

Her next release “Khuda Haafiz” is a romantic action thriller inspired by real life-events, and has been directed and written by Faruk Kabir. It will release on August 14, on Disney+ Hotstar VIP.

Talking about the direct-to-OTT release, Shivaleeka said: “We all wish for a theatrical release, but knowing the situation around, safety comes first. With OTT, the film will reach a maximum audience. Everybody can watch the first show. It is a great move by the producers. (In the end), you just want your film to be watched by maximum people.”

Sushant’s legacy extends in the song ‘Khulke jeene ka’: Shashaa Tirupati

Sushant Singh Rajput celebrates life in the song Khulke jeene ka, picturized on him in his last release, Dil Bechara. Shashaa Tirupati, who voiced the song, feels that the number infused with positivity could be an extension to the legacy of the late actor.

“For the longest time, I really wanted to sing for a film that starred Sushant Singh Rajput, and it didn’t happen. I was completely oblivious to the fact that ‘Dil Bechara’ had him as the male lead. When the news of his demise broke and I went through social media seeing the details of the cause, that’s where I read that ‘Dil Bechara’ was his last film,” Shashaa told IANS about the actor, who was found hanging at his Mumbai residence on June 14.

“I was very shocked at that moment. Initially, it was very emotional but it translated into a point where I kind of felt that singing a song with the lyrics being ‘Khulke jeene ka tareeka tumhe dikhate hain’ (ways to live life to the fullest) — just the fact that in a way it could be an extension to Sushant’s legacy,” she added.

Composed by AR Rahman and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya, the song is sung by Arijit Singh and Shashaa. She calls it a masterpiece.

“It’s one of those songs that you always go back to. When you listen to it (you wonder) how the idea occurs to him (Rahman). Intertwining notes, the harmonies just hug each other so beautifully and personally. I am a massive fan of Amitabh Bhattacharya’s work. The kind of words he has used — everything about it is so beautiful and in the current situation, I feel so deeply applicable,” she said.

“The times that we are going through right now, it’s something that we have forgotten or lost touch with, and ‘Khulke jeene ka’ acquaints you to that,” shared the National Award winner.

She has worked with Rahman on quite a few film songs, including the award-winning track “Vaan Varuvaan”.

“Rahman Sir is one of those people you don’t take away from, just musically or only something creatively. Having one conversation with him gives me so much insight spiritually. It taught me so much about life in general or just applying things on a day-to-day basis that are otherwise are difficult to tap into,” she said.

“Other than that, I think he has the capacity to create gold out of pebbles — to know what the capacity of any talent is. He has that strange capability of knowing what he can get out of the minutest talent or the biggest talent. In a lot of ways, he creates that talent in a lot of us including myself. There are songs that I have sung for him that I never thought I’d be able to render. These are the things you realize, and go ahead and apply in your creations as well,” shared the singer.

Eng v Pak 1st Test: Abbas, Afridi, Masood put Pak in driver’s seat

0

Pakistan fast bowlers were all over the England batting lineup as the hosts were reduced to 92/4 at the end of Day 2 of the first Test at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday.

Mohammad Abbas took two wickets while Shaheen Afridi struck once after Shan Masood’s 156 off 319 balls helped Pakistan to a first-innings total of 326.

Afridi provided the breakthrough off the fourth ball of the first over itself, trapping Rory Burns in front of the middle stump.

The umpire did not raise his finger initially but captain Azhar Ali went for the review. The replays went the visitors’ way. Burns’ opening partner Dom Sibley found it just as difficult to adjust to the fiery spells of Afridi and Abbas and fell two overs later.

This meant that England had Ben Stokes and Joe Root in the middle within the first six overs of their innings. Even Stokes, who has enjoyed stellar form over the past year and a half, could not survive for long as Abbas’ delivery swung past his outside edge struck the top of his off stump.

Root hung on with Ollie Pope as the latter finally gave England a steady flow of runs. The pair put up 50 for the fourth wicket before the England captain edged Yasir Shah to wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan.

Jos Buttler and Pope then saw England through to Stumps. Earlier, Shan Masood raced to his 150 and his epic knock was finally ended by Stuart Broad. The ball hit his back pad and while he called for a review, the replays only confirmed the on-field umpire’s decision. Masood walked off to warm applause from his teammates.

Brief Scores: Pakistan 326 (Shan Masood 156, Babar Azam 69; Stuart Broad 3/54) vs England 92/4 (Ollie Pope 46*, Jos Buttler 15*; Mohammad Abbas 2/24)

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept his cards close

0

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept his cards close to his chest over the possible signing of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho on Tuesday.

The Old Trafford giants are hoping to make the 20-year-old their marquee signing in the transfer window when the impact of the coronavirus pandemic means few other clubs can get anywhere near Dortmund’s lofty asking price.

It is understood that discussions are ongoing about a deal for the England winger. The Bundesliga club has reportedly set an August 10 deadline and wants more than 100 million pounds for the player.

But Solskjaer gave little away in his press conference ahead of the second leg of United’s Europa League last-16 tie against Austrian side LASK.

“This transfer window is a long one and every transfer takes its course,” said the Norwegian. “It is what it is.””At the moment, I’ve got no updates for you anyway so if there’s any news, we’ll update you.”

LASK will arrive at Old Trafford for Wednesday’s match 5-0 down from the first leg. Chris Smalling had hoped to be involved in the competition with Roma, but an extension to his season-long loan move has not been reached.

The defender said he was disappointed that he “can’t finish what we started this season” as the Serie A side prepared to face Sevilla, with Solskjaer ready to welcome the 30-year-old back to Old Trafford.

“I think Chris has shown over his career at Man United how valuable he is for Man United,” the manager said.”This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma, showing and proving how good a center-back he is.”

By contrast, Alexis Sanchez has got the green light from United to feature in the Europa League for Inter Milan. The forward has been a huge disappointment at Old Trafford and it has been reported that discussions over a permanent exit are ongoing.
