Will Australia set up a 3-0 against Sri Lanka?

0

Melbourne is home to nearly half of all Sri Lankans who reside in Australia-nearly 60,000 in all. And you can expect most, if not all, of them to show up and cover the vast expanse of the MCG in the Lankan blue. But the question is will the Sri Lankan team actually turn up. In the body, they certainly will but in spirit? Not on the basis of how they’ve gone in the series so far.

If anything the Australians, on the field that is, will be hoping that they do more than even they themselves would. This is after all the start of a lengthy campaign that Aaron Finch & Co. have embarked on to first claim the top ranking in T20I cricket and then lay their claim for a title that Australia have never won.

Not to forget that they already have the current No.1 ranked team, Pakistan, in their backyard and having made a commanding start to their tour in the warm-up game. And they’ll need more competition to get going and get tested in that regard, even if being indomitable and crushing opponents in clinical fashion like they have this week isn’t a bad way to go about it.

There’s still a long way to go till that World Cup but Australia will want to ask certain questions of themselves before they start feeling more settled with their setup. Steve Smith’s return to the crease in T20I cricket was sensational, so were his revelations pre-game about him playing at his best on zero sleep, his different stances for different formats and his guitar skills. But that Smith is the best batsman in the country, and perhaps the world, was already known even if his exact role in this format still needs defining and feels more flexible at this stage.

David Warner continued his dream run in white-ball cricket and the bowlers were as clinical as they were in Adelaide. The rest of the batsmen are still to come to the crease, forget the party, and Glenn Maxwell’s unfortunate break from the game should get the likes of Ashton Turner and Alex Carey to get a hit if Sri Lanka and their own openers allow them the opportunity.

On the evidence of how they’ve managed to both curtail and derail the Sri Lankan middle-order in the middle overs, Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar should be considered as certainties going forward. But like with most of what Australia has achieved so far this week, they’ll want to wait till the end of the Pakistan series to be fully convinced.

Billy Stanlake bowled with fire on the bouncy Gabba pitch and should be tested a little more ideally on the flatter MCG pitch. Kane Richardson meanwhile has been honest in his two outings without really doing enough to ascertain a regular place in the playing XI, especially once Andrew Tye is back from injury.

Lasith Malinga looked rather cross with his batsmen at the end of the last match, and you’d think they possibly can’t do worse than what they’ve dished out so far. Both Malinga and Australia can only hope.

BCCI makes specific request for pink ball ahead of Day-Night Test

0

As the Indian cricket board (BCCI) gears up to host its first day-night Test in less than a month’s time, focus is now on how the pink ball will behave. BCCI has asked SG, the makers of the red balls used in first-class cricket in India, to provide 72 new balls for the Test match against Bangladesh that is scheduled to be played at Eden Gardens from November 22.

TOI has learned that the Indian team management has asked for balls that behave similar to how the red balls do in India. Confirming the development, SG’s director Paras Anand told TOI: “We have taken feedback from the players. Our thought process is to make the pink ball as similar to red ball as possible.”

The major problem with the pink ball is retaining the color and shape of the ball. In this case, retaining reverse swing – a phenomenon which is an intricate part of how Test cricket is played in this part of the world – is a huge challenge.

“The red ball has a dark color. That allows the players to shine the ball to help it swing all day. Pink ball already start with a bright color. Balancing that is something that we are working on,” Anand revealed, adding that the balls would be sporting the traditional pronounced seam.

Once the lacquer of a regular red ball wears off, teams usually shine one side of the ball while the other side is allowed to lose its colour and get scuffed up.

The Indian team management has rallied around its incisive pace attack even on Indian pitches and reverse swing has played a key part in the pacers’ stellar show. With the Eden pitch likely to be wearing more grass than usual and with dew likely to have some impact in the evening, spinners won’t be expected to play the lead role.

The balls are likely to be delivered to BCCI by next week. That leaves the board to give the Test specialists- like Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara – enough time to get used to the balls.

Interestingly, the Indian team had complained about the quality of red balls last year. However, Anand believes that they have resolved the issue. “We have made the balls harder and the Indian team gave a positive feedback. We have tried to replicate the hardness in the pink balls as well,” Anand claimed.

When the BCCI had decided in 2016 to use the Duleep Trophy as a platform to test the pink balls, the survey wasn’t very encouraging. A member of the Indian team who has played with the pink ball told TOI: “The ball lost color drastically. Picking it up got difficult, especially at twilight, and the spinners found it very soft after 30 overs. It was difficult to derive bounce and zip off the pitch.”

However, the BCCI cricket operations team’s failure to host Duleep Trophy with pink balls this year- something present BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had strongly advocated as the then chairman of the technical committee – has created a sense of uncertainty albeit there are plans to host some of the matches in the upcoming first-class season under lights.

Anand claims that SG has studied the behavior of the pink balls for two years and come up with an improved version. “Every brand has its strengths and weakness according to the conditions available in host countries. We have tried to balance out the amount lacquer and coating needed on the balls,” he remarked.

Saha expects Indian pacers to call the shots in D-N Test

0

This being the maiden day/night Test for both countries, neither Bangladesh nor India cricketers are sure of what to expect in the first-ever pink-ball Test on Indian soil, at Eden Gardens from November 22. Among the handful of Indian players in the current Test team to have played pink ball cricket are Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammad Shami.

Both were part of the Mohun Bagan team which routed Bhawanipore Club in the CAB Super League final at Eden in 2016 – the first four-day match to be played with pink balls in India. Recalling that game, Saha said the ball swung quite a bit. “That match, however, was played with the Kookaburra ball. This time it will be SG. So it can be different,” Saha told ToI on Wednesday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman feels the Indian pacers will call the shots in the second Test. “We expect the ball to swing more under lights and given the form our pacers are in, they will enjoy the conditions,” he said.

Saha remembered once the pink ball got old, it was sometimes difficult to pick it. “Yes, sighting was a bit of a problem once the ball got old and dirty. Especially during the twilight period, it can be challenging,” he remarked.

The 2016 match was played in June, so this time Saha felt they have to take into consideration the dew factor too. “Dew is expected in November. it is a major factor and it should also be taken into consideration,” he added.

Saha will be attending a camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru from Thursday. “We are delighted but I haven’t got to associate with my India teammates about the day-night Test. Will get to discuss it in the next few days. We won’t have much preparation time. Hence we need to plan and adjust fast,” he opined.

D’Arcy Short has been roped in as Maxwell’s replacement for the last T20I against Sri Lanka.

5 Crores Not Enough For Nayanthara To Promote Sye Raa?

HIGHLIGHTS

Nayanthara is called the lady superstar of South cinema. She is no doubt one of the most talented actors in the industry right now.

Nayanthara is called the lady superstar of South cinema. She is no doubt one of the most talented actors in the industry right now. Nayan’s versatility reflects in her choice of movies. She has been delivering back to back hits in the recent years and also become the most sought-after heroine for senior established stars in Tollywood and Kollywood.

Her latest release Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, biopic of Telugu freedom fighter opened to mixed reviews. However, it filled the producer’s pocket. Ram Charan was happy with the box office collections of the movie we hear. In all the interviews, megastar Chiranjeevi has sang praises of Charan and the way he handled the movie and the cast. He went one step further to say that Charan gave actors the remuneration they asked for as he has known the hard work they put in. This was echoed by other members of the movie too. However, when the actors were busy promoting the movie, Nayanthara Skipped every event. Right from promotions to success meet, she was nowhere to be seen.

There were talks that she was unhappy with the remuneration. But sources close to the unit say that is not true. In fact, she got her career-best paycheque for Sye Raa. If a report doing the rounds js any indication, then Nayan was paid a whopping 5 crore for the movie. Now, isn’t that on par with a male actor? Then why was it that only Tamannah and Chiru did all the interviews? Did she want something extra for promotions? Well, here’s the reason. Apparently Nayanthara has a no promotion policy. Even though there were reports that she would break it for Sye Raa, she chose not to for reasons best known to her. Now, that should stop all the wagging tongues, yeah?

P Chidambaram Back In Tihar Jail, Court Rejects Probe Agency’s Request

0

P Chidambaram will go back to Delhi’s Tihar Jail till November 13, a Delhi court ordered today, moving him to judicial custody in the INX Media case. The former Finance Minister had been shifted out of the jail when he was moved to the Enforcement Directorate’s custody earlier this month.

In Tihar Jail, the senior Congress leader will have a separate cell, a western toilet, home-cooked food, and medicines, the judge said.

Mr Chidambaram’s Enforcement Directorate custody ended today. The 74-year-old’s request for interim bail will be taken up by the Delhi High Court tomorrow. He was briefly admitted to AIIMS on Monday and has requested bail to fly to Hyderabad for the treatment of a stomach ailment. His main bail request will be heard on November 4.

The court rejected the Enforcement Directorate’s request for one-day custody. Mr Chidambaram’s lawyer Kapil Sibal argued that the agency was not confronting any witnesses, as it had always claimed before the court while seeking longer custody. “Every day it’s the same story. ED kept telling court that we have to confront witnesses but not a single day was there any confrontation,” said Mr Sibal, also producing a file on the former union minister’s medical condition.

Mr Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI on August 21. He is accused of a role in irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the INX Media group for the infusion of overseas funds amounting to Rs. 305 crore in 2007, when he was Finance Minister of the country.

On October 16, the Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating money-laundering charges in the case, arrested him from Tihar Jail.

Last week, the Supreme Court granted Mr Chidambaram bail, saying there is no possibility of the former Union Minister absconding and “no whisper” of any evidence that he tried to influence even one witness.

The top court rejected the CBI’s argument that Mr Chidambaram is a flight risk and said the CBI had not provided any evidence on how witnesses were influenced – “SMS, e-mail, letter or telephonic calls and the persons who have approached the material witnesses.”

The Congress leader “can be released if he is not required in any other case”, the court said, adding that he will have to give a bond of Rs. 1 lakh.

In his first stint, Mr Chidambaram spent more than a month in Tihar, Asia’s largest prison facility.

Mr Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram and 13 others including senior bureaucrats and private companies have been accused in a CBI charge-sheet of causing losses to the government. The charge-sheet alleges the Chidambaram’s received Rs. 9.96 lakh as bribes.

Bhuvi Carrying An Injury Since 2018 After Being Not Treated Properly

0

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s recent absence from the national team has been nothing less than a puzzle. The fast-bowler did not show any kind of discomfort while bowling in the World Cup or the tour of West Indies. However, he did not make it to the T20I squads for the series against South Africa and the upcoming one against Bangladesh.

What made things even more confusing was that the selectors decided against explaining the pacer’s absence. Well, there is much more to the case than what is meeting the eye at the moment. As per a report in The Times of India, he is presently undergoing strength and conditioning programs at NCA to recover.

The report claimed that Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been carrying the issue since July 2018 but wasn’t treated properly.

“They must come up with a clear explanation of why it is taking Bhuvi so long to get back. The board announced that Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya needed to travel to England. Bumrah didn’t even need surgery,” an official said.

“He was not treated properly. His injury was allowed to aggravate because the team wanted to take him to the World Cup,” a source said.

NCA has been under scanner in recent times for the way it has dealt with the injured players. Last year, it had made a mess of Wriddhiman Saha’s injury and the player had to remain on the sidelines for nearly a year. There is no clarity over Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury and one can only hope that the pacer returns at the earliest. It would be interesting to see whether the board comes up with an official statement on his fitness. He hasn’t played any competitive match since the third ODI against West in August.

A new research has found that rising seas could affect three times more population by 2050 than it was previously thought, and India’s financial capital, Mumbai, is at the risk of being ”wiped out”.

The research paper was produced by Climate Central, a science organization based in New Jersey, and published in the journal ”Nature Communications”. However, the projections don’t account for future population growth or land lost to coastal erosion.

A report in The New York Times said that the authors have developed “a more accurate way of calculating land elevation based on satellite readings, a standard way of estimating the effects of sea-level increase over wide domains, and noticed that the previous estimates were far too promising.”

According to the new research, some 150 million people are now living on land that will be below the high-tide line by mid-century.

Much of India’s financial capital, Mumbai is at risk of being wiped out, the new projections suggest. Built on what was once a series of islands, the city’s historic downtown core is particularly vulnerable, it said.

“Overall study shows, that countries should begin preparing now for more residents to relocate internally,” Dina Ionesco, was quoted as saying.

International Organization for Migration is an inter-governmental group that coordinates actions on migrations and development.

“We’ve been trying to ring the alarm bells. We know that it’s coming. There is a little modern precedent for this scale of population movement,” Lonesco was quoted as saying.
