Netakani people celebrate Bathukamma, Diwali together

Ever heard of people celebrating Bathukamma-Diwali combo? But it’s true that families of the Netakani community in Seethampeta, 15 kilometers northwest of Warangal, have this strange tradition continuing for over a century.

Warangal: Ever heard of people celebrating Bathukamma-Diwali combo? But it’s true that families of the Netakani community in Seethampeta, 15 kilometers northwest of Warangal, have this strange tradition continuing for over a century. How and when it started is undocumented, but this weird tradition is in vogue in the community transmitted to it from generation to generation.

The community elders feel that it’s auspicious and augur well for them. The three-day festivity begins with Netakani families performing Kedareshwara vratham (a ritual to appease the God) on Diwali. Afterward, the Netakanis fetch black clay soil from a pond near their village to make an idol of two oxen for offering prayers. The second day of the festivity belongs exclusively to the men.
The men spruce up the idol of oxen with ornaments such as plough, stick spiked etc made of flour. Later, they take out a procession of oxen idol to the pond and offer prayers. The procession is marked with dances, kolatam, and bhajans of men. This is the time where the men splash colors on their brothers-in-law. It’s followed by bursting of firecrackers. Later, they immerse the oxen idol in the pond.

They collect the pond water and variety of flowers before they head to their homes. At home, they perform abhishekam to Kedareshwara Swamy with the pond water. The third day and final day witnesses a razzamatazz with the exuberance of Netakanis. While men play kolatam, the women bring Bathukammas to the pond. The preparation of Bathukammas is much like that of those we used to during the Saddula Bathukamma. The women worship Gowramma (cone made of turmeric and vermillion to invoke Goddess). Later, the women exchange the flour cuisines with each other. Thereafter, they immerse the Gowramma in the pond. Then they collect pond water in pots and return home to offer special prayers to Kedareshwara Swamy. The festivity ends with the cleaning of puja paraphernalia with pond water and milk. Speaking to The Hans India, Seethampeta Sarpanch Janagam Sharath Kumar said, “the festival is a unique combination of Bathukamma, the festival of flowers, and Diwali, the festival of lights. The Netakani community has been celebrating it from times immemorial. Wherever they live, they all gather for the festivity. The community elders say that it’s for the wellbeing of the people.” He said that the festivity ended on Tuesday evening with a large number of Netakanis attending it amid fervor.

Combining two knots – one, a relatively less popular game like football with women players and the other, the eternal appeal of underworld crime, director Atlee presents his Diwali release ‘Whistle’ released with great expectations during the Diwali weekend. ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, who has had a great run in the last two years in Telugu market plays a double role – a criminal warlord father and his football-crazy son who finds his dream of playing for the national team unrequited, owing to a sharp twist of fate.

Lavishly mounted and with a run time of nearly three hours to provide an endless supply of super heroism to his fans, the film runs at a good pace till the interval block when the young Vijay is given the assignment of winning the coveted cup. Of course, it’s not easy as the female lot distrust his abilities, given his not-so- clean background and the continuous attacks he endures from his rivals even when he is escorting them to the competition in faraway Delhi.

One is reminded of the Shah Rukh Khan hit ‘ Chak De India’ when one sees the hero pepping up his team members. Pairing the hero with the superstarni of southern cinema, Nayantara, who has an ill-defined role to perform, the second half is all about how the protagonist wins over the team and their loyalties, putting them through the grind and winning the big prize. The energy levels of the hero and his appeal remain unchallenged while one wonders whether the father-son duo with an alien theme like football can continue to hold on to the initial draw that the film enjoyed.

Samsung seems to be silently rolling out a new update for Galaxy S10 owners in Germany and Switzerland. While the company is yet to confirm the new feature, but the new OTA (over the air) update brings in the ability to take slow-motion videos from the front camera. According to a report, the new camera feature was expected to arrive with the next major One UI 2.0 update based on Android 10, however, it seems that Samsung doesn’t want to lag behind. The update also brings Media and Device buttons to the notification shade so one can easily control devices like TVs, Bluetooth headphones, speakers, etc. Apart from that users can also expect improved fingerprint recognition.

After playing massy and angry-young man roles, seasoned star Balakrishna will be reportedly essaying the role of an IT professional in his upcoming movie ‘Ruler.’ It is known that he is donning khakis for another role but his ‘suit-boot’ look was meant for the role of a software engineer, according to a source. “He breathed life into the sophisticated role with consummate ease. Already his stylish look enthralled his legion of fans and now his subtle performance will grip them,” adds the source and says “It is true that the first look with him sporting a very trendy look drew big attention but his role was kept under wraps.”

Contrary to the reports that Balayya will be playing a mafia don it is going to be a role of a highly-educated and superrich man. Earlier reports were that he would be playing a politician in the film but now the cat is out of the bag. Sonal Chauhan and Vedhika have been roped in to play the female leads in this flick. The combo scenes between the lead stars – Balayya, Sonal and Vedhika – have come out really well, the source points out.

Amit Shah Said No 50:50 Deal Discussed: Fadnavis Refutes Sena

0

The BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis said today that no rotational formula was agreed upon with the Shiv Sena, as it has insisted while demanding an equal share of power in Maharashtra. “There is no doubt in my mind that I will be Chief Minister for five years,” he said to questions about the Sena’s hard bargaining stalling government formation in the state.

He said there was no formula to split the Chief Minister’s post between the two parties for terms of two-and-a-half years each, as claimed by Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray – and he had it from his top leadership. “Amit Shah (BJP president) told me no formula had been discussed for chief ministership,” Mr Fadnavis said. He also said the Shiv Sena had made no demands.

Sanjay Raut, who has been the Sena’s most vocal arbiter in the feud, delivered an instant retort. “If Devendra Fadnavis has the support of145 MLAs (majority mark in assembly), he can form the government,” he said.

Mr Fadnavis, the only Chief Minister to complete a full five-year term in Maharashtra in over 50 years, also asserted that neither BJP nor the Shiv Sena was exploring other options.

“We don’t need a plan B,” he said.

In last week’s Maharashtra election, the BJP won 105 seats and the Shiv Sena scored 56. Together, the two have 161 seats, way past the half-way mark of 144, but with the BJP’s dependence for numbers higher this time, the Sena has set its terms.

Soon after the election results, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said: “Before the Lok Sabha elections, Amitbhai (Amit Shah) had come to my house, and we had say together and decided on a formula. Now the time has come to implement that formula.”

The BJP is emphatic about Devendra Fadnavis staying Chief Minister for the entire term and says there was no such deal before the assembly election. It is widely believed the Sena wants Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray to do a stint as chief minister.

The feud between the long-term allies has been marked by daily reminders from the Sena, publicly and unsubtly, in the form of digs, attacks and pungent editorials in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

“The Saamna derails talks,” he said, also confirming that the publication’s editor Sanjay Raut had upset many BJP leaders.

“We don’t give Sanjay Raut importance but people wonder why they fight elections together and then say such things,” said the Chief Minister.

Yesterday, Mr Raut had gone as far as to warn the BJP, “Don’t compel us to commit the sin of tying up with the NCP (Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party) and Congress”. This was based on reports that the NCP and the Congress were ready to back the Sena to keep the BJP out of power.

Mr Fadnavis, in response, remarked: “Sharad Pawar hasn’t said he will support Shiv Sena. Everybody has made their position clear.”

Sourav Ganguly takes a “Decision” on First-Class Cricket in India

0

After vowing that first-class cricket will be his biggest focus, the newly-elected BCCI president – Sourav Ganguly – suggested that a ‘contract system’ will be formulated for India’s first-class cricketers.

“We will implement a contract system for our first-class cricketers,” Ganguly stated. “We will ask the new finance committee to develop a contract system plan for the First-class cricket.”

With as many as 38 teams competing in the Ranji Trophy, the execution of this plan could be complex. The BCCI boss, however, is optimistic and stated that the work has begun.

“It has been four days taking charge and there was a Diwali break in between. It will take around two weeks to evaluate everything and move ahead. at present, the process is going on” the new BCCI president Ganguly stated.

Presently, BCCI pays 13% of its gross revenue to the Indian domestic players; with each player earning around Rs 25 to 30 lakh depending on the matches played. The match fee for an FC game is Rs 35,000 per day. If the contract system comes into effect, it could be a big boon to Indian domestic cricket.

Google looking to buy Fitbit in a bid to enter wearable market

0

Google owner Alphabet has made an offer to buy Fitbit, Reuters reports. It looks like Google is eyeing the wearable market and a Fitbit acquisition would allow the company to take on Apple, Samsung and other players in a brand new sector. Google already makes its own smartphones, but the company is yet to offer a Google-branded smartwatch.

According to the report by Reuters, there is no certainty that the talks between Google and Fitbit will lead to any deal. There is also no word on how much Google has offered to buy to Fitbit. Both companies declined to comment on the report.

Google’s presence in the wearable market is on a software level as it offers its Wear OS operating system to companies like LG, Fossil and other brands. Apple, however, remains the segment leader with Apple Watches grabbing nearly half the market. Xiaomi and Huawei are also strong in this sector, especially in China.

Google has been expanding its hardware portfolio off late. In addition to the Pixel phones, the company also offers Pixel Buds, Pixelbook, Google Home, among others. If the reported deal with Fitbit goes through, we may see the launch of a Google-branded smartwatch in the near future as the company looks to expand its ecosystem much like Apple.

Fitbit would also benefit from this deal with Google as the US-based wearable device maker has been struggling to gain a significant market share with Chinese competition like Xiaomi and Huawei offering affordable fitness trackers.

Sujith Wilson’s body recovered from borewell after 80 hours

0

A two-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli on Friday was declared dead by officials early Tuesday morning. Sujith Wilson‘s body had decomposed inside the borewell. A rescue operation that involved digging a parallel tunnel to get to the toddler was called off soon after the body was found.

Last night, government officials had said rescuing the boy would have taken 12 more hours. A stench rising from the borewell confirmed their worst fears – the child had died after over four days in the tunnel without food or water. Officials retrieved Sujith Wilson’s dismembered body from and sent it for a postmortem.

“The boy’s body is now in a decayed state. We tried our best to rescue him but unfortunately, foul smell has started coming from the borewell in which the child had fallen. The digging process has been stopped,” J Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary in the Transport Department and the Relief Commissioner told reporters.

Sujith Wilson was playing near the abandoned borewell on Friday evening when he fell inside. Progress on the rescue was slow because of rocky terrain and complex procedures, including drilling the parallel tunnel to reach the boy while ensuring the passage of oxygen to enable him to breathe in the closed space.

Authorities had earlier said Sujith was trapped at a depth of around 26 feet. Attempts to pull him up using a rope are believed to have caused him to fall further below to a depth of 88 feet. It is still not known how deep the borewell is; officials guessed it could be anywhere between 600 to at least 1,000 feet down.

Thousands of people followed the rescue closely as politicians and celebrities came out with prayers and calls to save the boy. Many have alleged a “trial and error” approach by the state government. Those critical of the operation claimed the National Disaster Rescue Force or NDRF was summoned nine hours after the rescue effort began.

PM Modi had said “every effort” was being made to ensure the child was safe. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, and actor Rajinikanth had all expressed concern for Sujith’s safety.

Some Tamil Nadu ministers monitored rescue efforts at the spot along with senior state officials.

With pretty damsel Kajal Agarwal’s maiden female-centric film ‘Paris Paris’ hitting a roadblock, the ‘Nene Raju Nene Mantri’ actress has reportedly put her other female-centric movie with young director Prashanth Varma on hold.

With pretty damsel Kajal Agarwal’s maiden female-centric film ‘Paris Paris’ hitting a roadblock, the ‘Nene Raju Nene Mantri’ actress has reportedly put her other female-centric movie with young director Prashanth Varma on hold. “Kajal was supposed to start shooting with Prashanth Varma from November this year but it has been deferred. Probably, Kajal seems to have developed second thoughts about doing another female-centric movie at this point of time,” says a source, close to the unit.

Some time ago, after bagging two National Awards for his debut film ‘Awe’- Best Special Effects and Best Make-up Artist — director Prasanth Varma was excited to make a sequel with Kajal Agarwal, who played a key role in ‘Awe’. “We intend to take the ‘Awe’ franchise forward with the sequel and the script is ready. Above all, Kajal has agreed to come on board. Though a sequel, it will not be a continuation of the first part, informed Prasanth.

Meanwhile, Prashanth got a nod from Akhil Akkineni and he is readying the script for the scion of Akkineni family and the youthful entertainer set to go floors from January next, the source adds. Whereas, Kajal will be busy shooting for ‘Bharateeyudu 2’ and honing her martial arts skills right now. Hence, the Kajal-Prashanth movie looks doubtful till mid-2020 or in all probability it would have been shelved.

Shakib Al Hasan likely to miss India tour

0

Bangladesh could likely miss the services of skipper Shakib Al Hasan for the upcoming T20I and Test tour of India, scheduled to start on November 3 with the first T20I in Delhi. After leading the players’ strike last week, the ace all-rounder has attended only one net session during the four-day preparation camp that included two warm-up T20 matches.

Shakib’s unavailability would prompt BCB to announce a fresh T20I squad on Tuesday (October 29), a day before traveling to India. The all-rounder is the current captain of both the Test and T20I set-ups. ”We will announce the T20 team tomorrow [October 29] at noon. We require some more time to state our Test team.” Akram Khan, said.

The selectors were also seen in lengthy discussions with the national head coach Russell Domingo during their final practice game at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Incidentally, board president Nazmul Hasan called some senior members of the set-up to discuss strategies ahead of the challenging tour to India, but Shakib wasn’t part of the meeting.

In addition to it, the board has also observed Shakib’s recent sponsorship deal with a telecom company is “unlawful” as it violates the terms and conditions of his contract. Subsequently, BCB issued a show-cause notice to the national captain.

Last week, Bangladesh’s players had assembled for a press gathering in Dhaka and declared that they will not take part in any cricketing activities unless their 11-point demand made to the board was met. Eventually, on Wednesday (October 23), the feud between BCB and the cricketers was resolved after the board agreed to most of the demands put forward by the cricketers.
