Experimentation has increased due to cloud computing, says AWS’ Olivier Klein

Olivier Klein says when one talks about technologies, it is not indeed a specific list, it is about technologies that do help redefine customer experiences or just improve overall operational efficiency. A big chunk of customer experience goes into data analytics – artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) space. This in turn, is made use of in, for example, understanding voice or speech better. Thus, it is about developing more personalized customer experience and better models around how one can create better customer experiences on online platforms.

Then there is the element of actually being more operationally efficient. We do provide customers with algorithms and data sets to run operations more efficiently. For example, in India, one works work with RedBus, which does make use of services such as Amazon Sagemaker to build ML models on reviews and recommendations.

A lot of enterprises are looking into AWS to understand what are the services as well as capabilities that do allow them to move faster and also reduce their costs to operate ML.

In the case of Intuit, it received a 90 percent reduction at the time of deployment. This allows it to move a lot faster, but also time equals cost, thus, this is more cost effective.

Experimentation has increased due to cloud computing, says AWS' Olivier Klein

YS: Has one noticed any trends in terms of organizations of particular sectors adopting AWS faster?

OK: Neither geographies nor industry verticals tend to define the maturity or willingness of a company to try things out. Cloud Computing has no doubts about the benefit that one has tremendous flexibility of experimentation. The level of experimenting has rather increased because of cloud computing.

YS: What challenges are enterprises facing due to rapid change and development of technologies?

OK: For us, it is always about choice and flexibility. We do give customers the flexibility to migrate from their current services to AWS as they can use the migration service. Also, in that migration process, one optimizes their platform.

For example, many of our customers have indeed asked us if we can help them with their database strategies. One does provide them choices to choose the right kind of underlying technology. One also provides them with flexibility. The key point is one informs them that they can go all into AWS by completely restructuring their respective platforms and optimizing it to a cloud-native architecture.

A lot of startups on our website to optimize for the best kind of services as well as architecture under AWS. One tends to handhold them when it comes to migration.

With traditional companies, one sees that there is a certain amount of legacy and they have these pieces of software sitting around that slowly need to be shifted. One does offer the flexibility of “lift and shift” there.

The National Australian Bank would indeed be an example that is currently on a migration process into AWS.

YS: What kind of cloud are large enterprises using today – hybrid/ public or private?

OK: One personally does believe that these terminologies do not describe how customers run in an AWS environment. If one looks at the capabilities that one provides them – any kind of development at AWS actually requires a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). One’s customers can indeed run in a completely private isolated network environment that if they do set it up in a certain manner, can completely be disconnected from the internet.

Customers can rather pick and choose what kind of workload they want to run in which environment. One also has devices such as AWS Snowball that do allow movement of large amounts of data by having an appliance which is shipped to the customer, loaded with data and moved to a cloud environment. It can be used back and forth.

YS: Whenever one does talk about the movement of data and migration, there is always a concern about security. How is technology ensuring that an individual’s identity is protected?

OK: One is always vigilant about our customers’ data and one does not actually access our customers’ data at any point in time. But it is also about giving our customers the right kind of tools as well as services to see that they can define their security footprint that they are compliant with.

More concretely, at any given point of time at AWS, with the click of a button, a customer can indeed have his data fully encrypted. Any change in the AWS environment, can not only be traced but also be immediately accessed against the set of rules that a customer defines.

One gives customers the full flexibility to define their own requirements on how they want to set up their platform, thus making sure that changes are always traced and is also audited at any given point of time. One service called Amazon Macie, if indeed activated against a storage bucket, does look at the personally identifiable information in the buckets as well as immediately sends notifications that do trigger immediate masking of that data. Most importantly, it is using ML learning models to understand the access partners against that data.

Paytm launches AI-based router engine to help merchants achieve better payment success rates

Business deals are made on a daily basis and it is essential that the payment mode indeed is streamlined to facilitate the customers. Transactions are innumerable and daily companies do handle a lot of business deals. The professional approach is taken in paying up and for this, it is important to have a company that can process payments professionally.

Indian payments company Paytm also does run its own payment gateway vertical and has announced the launching of its AI-based router engine, which will indeed help merchants to achieve higher payment success rates.

The company said that the AI-based SaaS engine does sit on top of multiple payment aggregators and also analyses data in real-time to route transactions dynamically to the best performing aggregator for improved success rates.

Merchants did partner with other payment gateways that can also make use of this engine to optimize the success rates of digital payments for their businesses.

With this new launch, the Paytm Payment Gateway also does offer smart processing of bank OTP’s and also does optimize bank pages. The engine’s algorithm automatically does calculate the success rate for every card bin and for every bank, routing payment traffic to the best performing aggregator, thus offering different payment modes in real-time.

Along with this, the AI-based routing engine does also make use of big data analytics to provide merchants with a comprehensive analysis of their sales, transactions, and success rates in an easy-to-refer dashboard. Naturally, the merchants would expect their transactions to be processed well.

Paytm launches AI-based router engine to help merchants achieve better payment success rates

Paytm is indeed expecting a 2x growth in its transactions that are processed on its platform by the end of FY 2020. However, it has not rather revealed the pricing of the router. One has to wait and see no doubt.

The partnered merchants do indeed spend massively on customer acquisition as well as retention. The last thing that they do not want is losing a customer due to payment failure. Much excitement is indeed felt in introducing an AI-based routing engine that does address that this problem does optimize the payment workflows and also routing the transaction to best-performing payment aggregator in real time.

Furthermore, this will rather help online merchants to be able to reduce development efforts to enable various PG providers as well as achieve faster time to market.

Paytm Payment Gateway has no doubt recently stated that it processes over 400 million transactions every month. Its online clients include IRCTC, Zomato, OYO, Swiggy, UrbanClap, PVR, Club Factory, Dominos, Jio, and Idea, among others.

Paytm has indeed an important role to play in merchant business affairs and has made efforts to ensure that they can make payments without any sort of hindrances. Professionalism cannot be compromised and Paytm has indeed proved so and the need of the hour in business transactions is for proper financial transactions. Money exchanges do play an important role in business affairs.

AI tool can predict psychosis risk from your speech

Scientists making use of artificial intelligence have indeed discovered a hidden clue in people’s language that can also accurately predict whether they are likely to develop psychosis in the future.

The machine-learning method is more precisely quantifies the semantic richness of people’s conversational language, a known indicator for psychosis.

The research indicates that automated analysis of the two language variables― indeed more frequent use of words associated with sound and speaking with low semantic density, or rather vagueness―can predict whether an at-risk person will indeed later develop psychosis with 93 percent accuracy.

Even trained clinicians had not noticed how people at risk for psychosis use more words associated with sound than the average, although abnormal auditory perception is a pre-clinical symptom.

One does try to hear these subtleties in conversations with people which are like trying to see microscopic germs with one’s eyes.

The automated technique that one has developed is a really sensitive tool to detect these hidden patterns. It is like a microscope for warning signs of psychosis.

AI tool can predict psychosis risk from your speech

It was indeed previously known that subtle features of future psychosis are rather present in people’s language, but one has used machine learning to uncover hidden details about those features.

There have been findings that add to the evidence showing the potential for making use of machine learning to identify linguistic abnormalities associated with mental illness.

The onset of schizophrenia as well as other psychotic disorders does typically occur in the early 20s, with warning signs, much referred to as prodromal syndrome beginning around age 17.

About 25 to 30 percent of youth who do meet criteria for a prodromal syndrome that will develop schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder.

Using structured interviews as well as cognitive tests, trained clinicians can indeed predict psychosis with about 80 percent accuracy in those with a prodromal syndrome.

Machine-learning research is indeed among the many ongoing efforts to streamline diagnostic methods, thus identifying new variables, and improve the accuracy of predictions. Currently, there is no cure for psychosis.

In case one can identify individuals who are at risk earlier and also use preventive interventions, one might be able to reverse the deficits.

There are rather good data available that are showing that treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy can delay onset, and perhaps even reduce the occurrence of psychosis.

AI language analysis does help clinicians to predict psychosis with 93% accuracy: Machine learning was indeed able not only to detect speech patterns indicative of psychosis but also to be able to identify a new pattern associated with the prodromal phase of psychosis, thus enabling an algorithm to predict the later emergence of psychosis with more than 90 percent accuracy.

Computers can indeed predict schizophrenia much based upon how a person does talks. In fact, several studies of at-risk youths have indeed found that doctors are rather able to guess “jarring disruptions” in otherwise ordinary speech. AI can in indeed predict psychosis risk in everyday language.

Recreating planetarium using virtual reality

Youngsters like to dabble with newer forms of technology. Many like to make use of new innovations to facilitate their work.

Bhairavi Gandhi, for instance, took to technology as soon as she got admitted to JNTU in order to do computer engineering and also got a gold medal. She at 34 years is indeed a technology enthusiast and started her own venture in Hyderabad after working as a software developer.

Virtual Reality has attracted the attention of many youngsters and enthusiasts like Bhairavi who wanted it to reach to the masses. The love for technology has inspired many toward VR technology and has prompted several entrepreneurs to create a virtual planetarium. These youngsters right from the beginning have been interested in science and technology. In fact, some have shown interest from childhood itself and have been top performers in their respective schools.

Recreating planetarium using virtual reality

Technology has in fact, being an integral part of the education of these youngsters.

Mothers look out for best teaching methodologies as well as technology for their children. They would like their children to be exposed to the internet and to encourage them to make use of Google, Wikipedia as well as other sources to gain knowledge. One is on the lookout for ways of teaching and VR planetarium which has indeed caught the fancy of several parents.

What is Planetarium in Virtual Reality?

A planetarium does happen to be a place where celestial events, as well as objects, are rather projected on a dome-shaped structure. It is normally a dark enclosed area which indeed does provide a stunning night sky projection. In fact one can experience similar experience via the VR (Virtual Reality): the VR headset does sit right in front of one’s eyes and does provide a grand three- dimensional view.

The visuals happen to be very realistic and also give a feel of a real space journey through stars, planets as well as black holes. The best feature of the VR planetarium can be available in one’s home or school.

Experiments have been on VR gaming and VR roller coasters and much involvement have been there in R&D as well as the manufacturing of VR experiences. VR planetarium happens to be a new and niche concept.

It is indeed a very portable product and one is open to colleges, corporate as well as parties. Education has to be given much importance.

Many people ask for Bollywood sort of movies on VR platform or exciting games. One indeed has separate gaming centers that are operating in malls. Yet one needs to focus upon knowledge rather than just fun and games.

Some people are indeed simply unable to come to places such as the Royal Observatory or to travel to dark skies, so this technology could indeed help them enjoy astronomy in a way that until now was not possible.

Virtual Reality has created a huge stir. Thousands of people are testing out the prototype. The buzz so far has been about what can be achieved via three-dimensional immersive gaming.

The age of Virtual Reality fitness is here: Are India gyms ready?

There is no doubt a new fitness phenomenon on account of Virtual Reality and it is letting us exercise in our world, thus powering through tsunamis and also becoming the superheroes one has always wanted to be.

Playing tennis is simply not enough. It is indeed not a satisfying workout to simply swing one’s arm forward and backward dressed in pyjamas in one’s living room, knowing full well that one will be back on the couch diving into some biryani.

Enter Virtual Reality to take one’s gaming and thus taking one’s workout to a whole new level.

Importance to space

One of the top players in this fitness subculture is Black Box VR, the first Virtual Reality gym, which is located in San Francisco.

The programs that are implemented in the Black Box VR game were created by top trainers and exercise scientists. Based on over 100 exercise studies, one’s body will indeed see immediate improvements that match or beat traditional exercise programs. One can push harder and work out more consistently, even if it does feel like a fun sport.

So how does it work? One needs to forget standing in an airy, brightly-lit gym with other people sweating it out — at Black Box VR, much like its name, one ends up standing in a dark space. But one is not just wearing the headgear that one would wear for a video game. While in a private room, one’s body is strapped with ergonomic sensors and controllers, so one’s focus is on the task at hand, working out using the equipment around oneself.

So what’s the actual experience like? Virtually placed in visceral environments, one needs to fight one’s way through a tsunami and exercise those glutes, calves as well as hamstrings, brave tough blizzards with dead-lift equipment working one’s pectorals, back and biceps, conquer the earth and fiery environments thus making use of one’s chest and shoulder muscles… one can embody Bear Grylls without going anywhere near a mound of dirt.

Black Box VR does claim Virtual Reality fitness that can be tailored to any scale of fitness level, whether one is just taking up that New Year’s resolution or one has the stamina of a gladiator.

The age of Virtual Reality fitness is here: Are India gyms ready?
Feedback is everything

A VR-equipped group who are exposed to a given environment, including a visual representation of an arm as well as the weight, do carry out the same lift and hold as the non-VR group.

The study does show a clear reduction in the perception of pain as well as effort when making use of VR tech.

The Artificial Intelligence in the system does make one learn one’s workout pattern and, with real-time resistance, ups the ante for one to adjust the machines and the simulations accordingly. Plus, the AI, which is rather easy to use by even the tech-illiterate, will indeed inform one to form needs to shift.

For the Indian market

Google ‘Virtual Reality fitness India,’ and one will not get satisfying results. Some gyms state they are a VR fitness zone, but actually only simply have a widescreen television set up opposite a treadmill. Virtual Reality workouts have not really made a home in India, but some have plenty of hope.

It is worth noting that space does require being VR-ready, totally separate from a mainstream gym; no sound or light interference which may interrupt the flow of a session. Ultimately, Virtual Reality, tapping into some already fitness-fanatic societies in the country, still do require some patience.

No doubt while VR itself seems to be an effective tool in pain management, it is worth noting the considerable amount of time required to maintain and clean the equipment — something which does need expert technicians.

Even in the UK, where the age of boutique gyms is reaching peak saturation, VR fitness is indeed yet to make itself known. Many factors have to be considered such as health and safety. a trainer, I love to go to the gym, smell the iron, work up a sweat and see the workouts around me.
