Govt considering internet monitoring through a centralized system

Internet monitoring through the neutralized system is being encouraged by the Government and this will help better internet trafficking and mobile facilities.

The government is out to consider monitoring internet traffic via a centralized system which is operational all over the country. This was disclosed by Parliament. The focus is on internet monitoring through a centralized system.

The government has rather set up a Centralized Monitoring System (CMS) for a lawful interception as well as monitoring of mobile phones, landlines along with internet traffic via the mobile network.

As of now, monitoring of internet traffic via internet service providers is being done through Internet Monitoring System which is also under consideration for integration with CMS. Obviously, much emphasis will be given toward internet monitoring through a centralized system.

The hub of CMS happens to be located in Delhi and 21 regional monitoring centers are operational across all the 22 telecom circles in the country.

Govt considering internet monitoring through a centralized system

The CMS does facilitate automated processing of lawful interception order from law enforcement agencies to telecom operators. It does allow electronic provisioning of the targets without manual intervention of telecom operators.

There were about 3.8 billion internet users around the world in 2018. It is, of course, equivalent to 51 percent of the global population, up from 49 percent in 2017.

India happens to be the second largest internet market in the world. This trend was rather observed in the 2019 Mary Meeker Internet Trends Report. As a measure in order to look over the vast telecom network and internet traffic in the country, the government is rather considering monitoring it all through a Centralized Monitoring System (CMS). The concept of internet monitoring through a centralized system is indeed painful.

The digital monitoring system, which is already operating in Delhi and Mumbai, is to be operational across the country thus integrating various network service providers into the given fabric. At present, there are 21 regional monitoring centers that operate across all the telecom circles in India.

The order does call for an interception as well as monitoring of mobile phones, landlines and the internet network sprawling across the country. Integrating the monitoring system will rather eliminate the role of telecom operators and thus enable electronic provisioning of anything and also everything that is related to communication lines.

The development of the system will be undertaken in phases. CMS will also play the government agency between the target lines as well as digital law enforcement. In cases of national security issues as well as allied matters, the federal structure of agency will rather come in handy to secure the flow of communication in real-time.

The concept of a centrally storing communication data was first envisaged with regard to the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. With the CMS, income tax officials will indeed be focusing on having centralized access to the country’s telecom. This is how the process is envisaged like – all data intercepted by the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) will, in fact, be a default transmission to the CMS. Only the central officials will have the required credentials to view the system and hence, they can somehow bypass service providers in gaining such access.

Will this be a breach of privacy? Media has in fact for the last few years, indeed discussed the cons of the system claiming it as an infringement upon citizen’s right to privacy as well as other human rights. However, the authorities do indeed maintain that the CMS will be in a better position to protect the privacy of individuals. Of course, in a country where corruption levels are skyrocketing one cannot guarantee the claims with an unregulated surveillance scheme. Also, there has been no public consultation much prior to its implementation, not even a parliamentary discourse.

Asia Heads towards 5G with India Being Challenged

India does face a major challenge when it comes to 5G and has to compete with other countries globally although it is not really lagging behind. It has carved a niche for itself in Asia in the mobile world.

At Shanghai, the Mobile World Congress 2019 was organized by GSMA, 5G. From the exhibitors to the panelists, the tradeshow proved spectacular and more so in Shanghai’s New International Expo Center where everyone harped about the benefits 5G connectivity thus being poised to bring to the users. In fact, in this context India faces some big challenges in order to get to 5 G. And for a good reason, as this decade does come to a close, the next generation of mobile connectivity is all set to go live in a lot of mobile markets, many of them in Asia. South Korea in fact already has a functioning 5G network, while China is expected to start 5G rollout in 2020. Five more nations are also in the fray to roll out 5G this year which include Australia and Philippines, while in 2020, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Vietnam are also expected to embrace 5G, at least to a certain extent.

Asia Heads towards 5G with India Being Challenged

India is also on the list of countries expected to roll out 5G connectivity in a limited capacity by 2020 even though India faces some big challenges in order to get to 5G.
GSMA’s in-house research team, GSMA Intelligence, has predicted that the Asian mobile economy is split in two groups. One group which does include nations such as South Korea and Australia are optimistic about the future of 5G and have already invested heavily in the infrastructure, while other nations such as India are being cautious about it and continue also to strengthen their existing 4G networks. The GSMA does predict that it will be the consumers, but the industries that will be leading the growth for 5G connectivity across the world. The idea of intelligent, connected solutions for cities, factories and the likes will rather be given much importance initially, followed by more people buying 5G-enabled devices.

370 MILLION NEW SUBSCRIBERS TO BE ADDED BY 2025

Asia, in fact, has been the biggest contributor to subscription growth in recent years, while India and China to make up for half of the world’s mobile population today. However, Asia will not be able to sustain the high growth rate beyond 2020 on account of saturation in highly penetrated markets and poverty, inequality and other social barriers in less developed and less penetrated countries. Despite this scenario, GSMA does predict Asia will contribute 370 million new subscribers by 2025.

CHALLENGES INDIA FACES

India can boast about over 750 million unique subscribers and happens to be a global giant in the telecom industry. The country will be having an additional over a quarter of the world’s new mobile subscribers till around 2025, second only to China. Yet, India faces some big challenges in order to get to 5G.

India will be able to offer affordable, sufficient and exclusively licensed spectrum across the three key frequency bands for 5G networks. The spectrum in India is rather allocated based on auctions.

In order to become a leader in 5G technologies, Indian operators do have to figure out a way to decrease their debts and also invest more in modernizing networks. GSMA does predict around 5 percent of mobile users will be on 5G by 2025 in India. Furthermore, to aid swift adoption, the government should indeed revise the spectrum pricing which is still quite high.

To improve the viability, GSMA does suggest India revise its legacy regulatory policies in order to suit the modern needs better, bring down the price of the spectrum and support operators with a new taxation policy that encourages further investment.

Major websites and internet services down a day!

Major websites went down on a particular day and failed to operate. This has indeed been a major slowdown and outage in services and cannot be side-tracked.

Major website and internet service hosting platform Cloudflare did experience an outage on Tuesday, thus causing outages for sites as well as services that are hosted on the platform. Cloudflare is aware of the outage and efforts are on to resolve it. In fact, one cannot overlook the fact that major websites are down due to a hosting-platform outage service has been partially restored and focus is on working towards restoring global service.
Cloudflare is no doubt experiencing issues and is an internet-hosting platform that many internet services do rely on to remain functioning and protected in the case of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS).

This is quite evident based upon the website-hosting platform itself and hundreds of tweets from frustrated social media users and this has shown how major websites are down due to a hosting-platform outage.

Major websites and internet services down a day!

Cloudflare happens to be an internet-hosting platform that many internet services do rely on to remain functioning and protected in the case of a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. An outage from Cloudflare does affect internet services globally.

Cloudflare is indeed partially restored, and the company is rather working to restore services globally.

Based upon Down Detector as well as reports on Twitter, websites and services do indeed experience outages around the time of the Cloudflare outage do include: Discord, Sirius XM, Network Solutions, Shopify, Zendesk, Coinbase, Canva, Soundcloud, Sling TV, Wattpad, TransferWise, Robin Hood, Medium, BuzzFeed, Streamlabs, Concur, Pinterest, and Dropbox. Some of the outages of these sites and services may not be actually linked to the Cloudflare outage.

On 28 February, several websites did fail to function optimally. While many may have cursed their service providers for the slowdown, the websites do claim someone else was to blame.

It was learned that Amazon’s S3, a web-based storage service, did face problems, thus causing an internet shutdown of sorts in the east coast of the United States. This highlights major websites are down due to a hosting-platform outage. Subsequently, prominent websites such as Quora, Imgur, Slack, Yahoo! Mail and Medium do go offline and did not load images or even ran slow. Amazon, in fact, could not even update its website’s status dashboard: its red colored warning icons were non-functional as they were rather hosted on the side of the cloud that had in fact stopped operating.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) does host images for many websites, in addition to entire websites. The ‘cloud’ is indeed made up of thousands of powerful computer servers that are being stored by Amazon and other players in massive server farms. The companies did, in fact, build up and also maintain these farms so that smaller players do not have to invest in this infrastructure.

Amazon does, in fact, enjoy the distinction of being one of the best providers of cloud services, a shutdown did result in the slowing down of a significant section of the internet. Amazon did refuse to acknowledge the shutdown as an outage and also instead called it “high-error rate”. Ironically, outage-monitoring websites Down Detector and downrightnow.com were also offline. An outage does, in fact, refer to the period when an “entire system” tends to fail to provide or perform its primary function. On the other hand, a high-error rate does indicate the repeated failure of a specific component of a system. As far as Amazon is concerned, despite denial, the entire system does fail.

Amazon has indeed rather revealed no clear reason for the five-hour disruption of services, though their tweet does confirm they have in fact identified the issue. Ironically, even the status does also indicate with regard to AWS service status page rely on S3 for the storage of its health marker graphics, and this also happens to be the reason why AWS has stated that all services were “working” despite contrary evidence.

Amazon has managed to provide an update about the issue to its users on Twitter.
