Small Films Are So Scary – Dil Raju

“Actually, I feel scared to do small films”, commented by Producer Dil Raju. Yesterday producer Dil Raju gave an interview to a newspaper and he opened up his feelings about small movies. In his interview, he said “I feel scared to do small films actually because it’s very difficult to pull the audience to the theatres when releasing small films. For example, Kerintha film was nice but it hasn’t collected very well. For that, we conducted so many success tours to increase the audience rate for that film. But there was no benefit by all that and felt difficulty to gain investment. If we spend that time with another motive, the result will be different. So, instead of small films better to do a film with a reputed hero, we can get a minimum audience.”

In the occasion of Raj Tharun’s Lover movie, he gave an interview and he introduced many directors to the industry but first time gave a chance to debut producer. His nephew Harshith took up this project and hopes are high. As Dil Raju said, he feels tension about this film because of it’s his nephew’s first movie. He commented, also about multi starrer films as that there was no plan to make multi starrer films, that was just script demanding.

This movie releases on 20th July and he announced about his future releases also, Nithin’s Srinivasa Kalyanam on August 9th, Ram’s Hello Guru Prema Kosame on October 18th, Venkatesh & Varun Tej’s F2 in Sankranthi days and Mahesh Babu’s 25th film on April 5th. Finally, seems to Dil Raju want to go on a safe line instead of experiments.

Idi Naa Love Story Movie Review and Rating

Idi Na Love Story Review

Posted [relativedate] at [relativetime time_format=”H:i”]

Tarun had blockbuster hits during his time in the Tollywood film industry. His films were a synonym for young and refreshing love stories. From being a chocolate boy, the hero managed to become a leading actor in a short time. Just like everyone has a fall, Tarun too had a fall, but a drastic fall. After taking a long break, Tarun is back with ‘Idi Na Love Story’

Story:

Rachana, who works as an RJ (Radio Jockey) sends her brother Abhi (Tarun) to Araku, to meet her fiancée’s sister. She hopes both of them to get into love. He gets to meet another girl Dr Shruti (Oviya) when no one is at home. Both of them share a lot about their past love stories and eventually falls in love. The story takes a different turn when Abhi comes to know that, Shruti is not the one whom his sister asked him to meet. To make it up, Shruti comes with different stories trying to reason out. Did Abhi confess his love? What about the girl Rachana asked Abhi to meet? And how did Abhi sort out everything?

Analysis:

The films start off with Tarun narrating a story. Though there has been much hype around the film, be it because of Tarun’s comeback, or the title itself, the movie did live up to its expectations. The theme is quite old; a love story. But the new elements give us the fresh feeling.

The screenplay has been above par, and direction is quite good. Though the dialogues seem horrendously funny and lame at times, few of them are sure to have a long impact. Director could have made use of other characters in the film too. It makes sense that the whole film revolves around the lead pair, at the same time, no one wants to see the same faces in every frame.

Despite the film being an official remake of a Kannada film, the director made some key changes to suit the script to Telugu audience. The writing could have been much better. There is a lot of scope for improvisation in terms of the script. Cinematographer Christopher Joseph was successful in capturing the emotions and feeling through his lens. While, composer Srinath Vijay gave some soothing, romantic and fresh music.

In spite of a long break, Tharun still has the charm to woo the young audience of this generation. That chocolate boy has transformed into a better actor, who is capable of coming up with subtle emotions. Oviya Helen as Dr Shruti excelled in her role. Though it is her debut movie in Telugu, we really don’t feel that way. The chemistry between the lead pair worked quite well on the silver screen. Rest of the characters are needless.

Plus points:

  • Tarun and Oviya performances
  • Story
  • Cinematography and Music

Drawbacks:

  • Script
  • Too much focus on Lead pair
  • Pale writing, especially few dialogues

Telugu bullet Punchline: Who knows your love story might be ‘Idi Na Love Story’!

Yentha Sakkagunnave song from Rangasthalam – Review

Yentha Sakkagunnave song from Rangasthalam – Review

Posted [relativedate] at [relativetime time_format=”H:i”]

‘Rangasthalam’ has been engulfed in a cloud of high expectations right from the very first day. Given Sukumar’s brilliance in the screenplay, coupled with Ram Charan’s power-packed performance and Samantha’s flair and glamour, the film kept Telugu audience wanting more. The First single from Rangasthalam ‘Yentha Sakkagunnave’ just released a while back.

After it was made public that, Devi Sri Prasad will be composing the music for the film, certain section from film circles did express their reservations. Frankly speaking, Devi failed to impress the audience in recent past. It felt like DSP is a risk taken by Sukumar. Both have previously collaborated for films like Arya and Arya 2, which were both musical hits.

The opening of ‘Yentha Sakkagunnave’ is very trending and catchy. Though it reminds us of the typical Godavari region folk number, the instruments used for composing brings the fresh and trendy feeling. For a change, DSP’s voice suits the song perfectly. Lyrics are sweet and bring back our old lost Telugu. Lyricist Chandrabose has taken extreme care while writing the song. One can find Godavari dialect in the song’s lyrics. The simple, yet catchy tune takes us back to golden times of folk songs with a modern facet. Once again, DSP’s guitar strings deserve a special mention.

‘Yentha Sakkagunnave’ is a unique single far away from the ‘regular’ DSP singles. Overall, ‘Yentha Sakkagunnave’ entho Sakkagundhi!

Anasuya, Rashmi Gautham, and Sreemukhi – Anchors or Skin-show mavens? Who is leading?

Anasuya, Rashmi Gautham, and Sreemukhi  Anchors or Skin-show mavens?

Posted [relativedate] at [relativetime time_format=”H:i”]

Previously, anchoring meant a special art. It demanded conversational skills, charm and sense of humour. In recent times, anchoring is largely limited to skin show. Be it Anasuya Bharadwaj, Rashmi Gautam or Sreemukhi, the three anchors have redefined the meaning of anchoring on the small screen. Frankly, it all started with Anasuya with the Jabardasth show.

 Anchors to Skin-show mavens!

Anasuya became the first anchor to showcase glamour even on a TV show. Soon, the show became unwatchable for children. Anasuya’s skin show and double meaning dialogues by contestants became the only promotional content for the comedy show.

Soon, Rashmi Gautam took over the show as an anchor, after Anasuya left the show citing personal reasons. Surprisingly, there was no gap between the demand and supply of glamour. Rashmi Gautam too did her best and was seen mostly in a skin-show friendly attire throughout many episodes. Things did go overboard at times. Searches for Rashmi Gautam and Anasuya mostly point out towards their dressing sense in the Jabardasth show.

Another top anchor currently trending is Sreemukhi. Though she did in a couple of movies, she did not get much recognition. She got all that she wanted from the small screen, if not from the silver screen. Sreemukhi has been labelled as a glamour girl, someone who doesn’t shy to reveal what she has in store. Likewise, rumours about her relationship with co-anchor Ravi only propelled her fan following in the public, especially among youth.

In recent times… and future!

It is true that Rashmi Gautam is slightly lagging behind Anasuya and Sreemukhi as far as social networking sites are concerned. Rashmi Gautam has 3,32,000+ followers, while Anasuya Bharadwaj has 5,86,000+ followers on Twitter. Sreemukhi leads the race with 6,37,000+ followers.  The biggest advantage Rashmi Gautam has over her contemporaries is that she has acted in more feature films than the both combined. This not only propels her film career but also makes her presence in the films more prominent.

Anasuya is able to grab some good offers in star movies like ‘Rangasthalam’ lately. But it is highly unlikely for the anchor-turned-actress to play the lead female role in a full-length feature film any time around. Though she claims to be 32-33 years old, film circles often look her as 35+ woman! It shouldn’t be surprising if Anasuya is limited to glamour roles and character roles in feature films.

Similarly, Sreemukhi’s future on silver screen looks bleak. She did manage to star in 5 Telugu movies in 2016. But since then, she has been desperately trying to be the lead actress. Her last film as a lead actress was in 2013 with ‘Prema Ishq Kaadhal’. The famous saying, ‘to make something special, it should be less visible’, clearly comes true in Sreemukhi’s case. The anchor believes that she is promoting herself by posing for back-to-back photo sessions. Little did she know, the more visible she is on the small screen, less is her chances to be a part of feature films. Given her extreme presence on social media, she isn’t anymore considered as a fresh face!

Sreemukhi on Small Screen, and Rashmi on Silver Screen!

Among these three; Anasuya Bharadwaj, Rashmi Gautam and Sreemukhi, Anasuya will fall behind in the race in the coming few years. There is no way for her to be the lead actress. Moreover, she has been offered roles that demand glamour quotient, than her acting. Frankly, she is only popular for her glamour in movies, besides her ‘glamour’ popularity on TV.

Sreemukhi’s fan following, and her presence on social networking sites, clearly hint her as the leading one on TV. Rashmi Gautam’s presence can be taken lightly, given the dominance of Sreemukhi and Anasuya.

Rashmi Gautam outclasses both Sreemukhi and Anasuya when it comes films. Even Rashmi Gautham is famous for her glamour and skin-show. But the actress did manage to grab some good offers in recent times. She can be the second fiddle to the heroines in movies.

Conclusion: From the times of Jhansi, Udayabhanu, and Suma, things have moved on to Anasuya, Sreemukhi and Rashmi Gautam. The first three were known for their anchoring skills, their ability to enthrall the audience and for their sense of humor. Likewise, the latter three are known for their skin-show, double meaning dialogues and over-the-board controversies!

Digital Rights – Dangerous than Piracy and Online Reviews to Tollywood

Digital Rights – Dangerous than Piracy and Online Reviews  to Tollywood

Posted [relativedate] at [relativetime time_format=”H:i”]

Introduction:

The 1990s – mid-2000s is the golden age of Telugu Film Industry (TFI) after the NTR – ANR – SVR era. Post the mid-2000s, say from 2005 onwards, Piracy became the nightmare of Telugu Film Industry. The producers, directors, and heroes had to come forward and requested the people to go to theatres to watch films and not on pirated movie CDs. Things did not end there. Towards 2010, internet suddenly expanded. From a mere 96 Kbps speed, users were able to access speeds over 1 Mbps. And even smartphones became cheaper, making videography a routine thing. This took digital piracy to an all new level. One could watch movies on few websites within a day of their release. With strict regulations in place in movie theatres and constant surveillance on websites, the digital piracy came down slightly. Adding to this comes the Digital Rights.

From the past couple of years, the producers are receiving handsome checks from video-streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Yupp TV for the digital rights. Previously, the audience got to see a movie in these video streaming services after 3-4 months. Given the competition among these players, the moves are available even within a month now.

Classic Examples and the Future

The best example is MCA – Middle Class Abbayi, starring Nani, Sai Pallavi, and Bhumika Chawla. Even before one month since its release (on 21 December 2017), the movie became available on Amazon Prime Video. Even the Horror – comedy flick, ‘Raju Gari Gadhi – 2’ was available on Amazon Prime video within a month of its theatrical release

The impact of Digital Rights may not be imminent on the Telugu Film Industry. Surely with time, it is going to engulf the whole concept of movie watching experience in movie theatres. It will not be surprising if Web series’ completely overtake feature films in the coming future. This whole procedure can be broken into three phases:

  • Affect on Movie Theatres in Rural areas – Phase 1
  • Endangering the existence of Movie Theatres – Phase 2
  • Wiping out Telugu Film Industry – Phase 3

Affect on Movie Theatres in Rural areas

Even if the movie is available on online (legally), it may not bother the producer, who often pockets lump sum by selling theatrical rights, audio rights, satellite and digital rights. But the theatre owners are complaining about this situation. If the film fares well at the box-office and has some good content, one can expect good (crowd) turnouts until the 60th day of the film. The revenue earned from 4th week onwards directly goes to the distributor (or the cinema hall owner).

Even if the film fails at the box-office, the decent turnouts are expected, if the movie has their favorite hero or heroine. Someway or the other, the theatre owners and distributors ensure they get their back their investment at a minimal loss.

With the video streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Yupp and even few YouTube Channels into play, the theatre owners (and distributors) are losing decent income. The owners of theatres in villages rural areas are victims of corroding window-ticket revenues. Insider sources say that if they’re a short span between the theatrical release and online streaming, the producer is expected to rake in more revenue during the contractual agreement with the video streaming service players.

A hit movie can have a run up to 175 days to 365 days in rural areas, depending on the crowd turnout. Similarly, even if the movie fails, the movie can still run for a minimum of 50 days in most of the cases.

The ‘digital rights’ might bring more cash in the producer’s account, but are definitely corroding the ticket-window sales in the case of orthodox movie theatres. Shockingly, MCA is still running decently (and strongly) in few regions, and faring better than Sankranti releases like Agnyaathavaasi and Jai Simha.

Endangering the existence Movie Theatres

So how does this endanger the existence of movie theatres in Tier-III cities, Tier-II cities and metropolitan cities? This is a common question in everyone’s mind. But the answer lies in the mere fact that, faster you get to see a movie on online, less is its life on the silver screen. Amazon Inc. finds India as the most lucrative market for retail and video streaming business. Additionally, other big-time players are eyeing the Indian market. With Venture Capitalists pumping in millions of dollars in this industry, digital rights are likely to fetch more than theatrical rights in the near future.

Digital rights have their own edge of conventional theatres. Apart from enjoying the movie from the comfort of your home, we can get to watch our favorite star’s film the day it releases. One need not scramble for last-minute tickets, or end up paying astronomical prices for premier show tickets.

‘Digital Rights’ Benefits to Producers – Free from ‘Piracy’ and ‘Reviews’

Moreover, the concept of digital rights completely eliminates various middlemen like buyers, distributors and theatre owners. All the producer needs to do is to agree for a common price with the video streaming service. The question of low-price for a theatrical release in particular regions will no more exist in the film industry. It completely becomes the service provider’s responsibility, once the producer transfers digital rights, in handling issue of piracy. Additionally, the problem of ‘reviews’ also hardly impact the producer’s pocket. The producer need not spend large chunks of money for promoting the film on various platforms like electronic media and social media and carry out promotional events.

Digital Rights – A Boon to Small-time Filmmakers

Digital rights are certainly a blessing to small-time filmmakers, who often invest their hard-earned money into filmmaking. Film reels from these small filmmakers often end up stacking up in the color labs, with hardly any theatres coming forward to exhibit their film. The concept of Digital Rights also increases competition between films, irrespective of the star cast.

With time, the digital video streaming services will completely overtake movie theatres, bringing more profits to the producer, and fewer hassles of watching a film to the audience.

Wiping out Telugu Film Industry

So, how can digital rights be responsible for wiping out Telugu film industry? In recent times, many actors and directors are turning towards other forms of filmmaking, like web series’ and short films. If the video streaming services promise a hefty payment to individual filmmakers, then what is the need for someone to come up with a feature film? In comparison to a feature film, the stakes on a web-series are much lower. Even if an episode in the web-series backfires, the filmmaker still has an opportunity to come up with something better in the forthcoming episode. That is not the case with a feature film. It is extremely difficult to keep the audience engaged for in the case of a 2hr feature film. But it is much easier to keep the audience engaged for a 45min – 60min episode of a web-series.

Pay Scale and Production Flexibility

Similarly, the pay scale of an actor is directly dependent on the episode’s success. That is not the case in the film industry. If a given actor manages to shine in big-budget movies, along with star cast, only then his remuneration can be as expected. If not, he might have to struggle to get what he deserves. In the case of web-series, an actor’s pay can highly fluctuate throughout the series. The actor can expect a hike in his pay, if he brings in uniqueness to his character, by coming up with different mannerism and attitude.

Casting Flexibility

In general, it takes a couple of weeks to decide the cast for a future film. Additionally, it can even take a month to two months, to eventually finalize the shooting schedules of a movie. Many films don’t go beyond the casting stage, given the tedious nature of the job. A web-series usually has a principal cast of 4 to 6 actors. Rest of the cast usually works on a weekly basis. This gives the production manager and the director a great extent of freedom.

Conclusion:

The experience of watching a movie in-house!

Watching a film in the home, with home theatre arrangement might be great, given the comfort of your home. But one would miss the sheer experience of watching the film on a large screen, with hundreds of spectators lost in the magic of a great movie. We don’t say, every film deserves a watch on the silver screen. But surely, a small screen, particularly the size of a QHD TV, and a home theatre is definitely to not sufficient to experience and witness magic and creativity of a filmmaker.

Just imagine how you feel watching a science fiction movie with a mid-range audio system? With a screen that extends more than your arm’s length? An experience where you find yourself all alone in your room, or with your family? You need many alongside you, to really feel the experience of a great moment.

People’s lives and Telugu Film Industry at stake!

Similarly, theatre owners, especially in the rural areas can sell-off their properties to make some money. Instead of that, they bear the risk of exhibiting a film, so that the common people can watch. Where will the people living in a village watch the movie, if the local theatre stops exhibiting them? Will they spend Rs 400 on traveling, and Rs 100 for the movie ticket in the nearby town? Definitely not. Whether loss or profits, the theatre owners bear. They sell their lives for cinema.

The way multiplexes run in the cities might be different. But at the end of the day, their existence solely depends upon the film’s performance. If a given multiplex suffers from back-to-back losses with low crowd-turnouts, the multiplex might shut down, given the high running costs.

At the end of the day, digital rights bring the luxury of watching a film from home on its first day. But beyond a certain limit, with producers opting to bank on digital rights, the future of Telugu Film Industry is surely dubious.

If there is anything else more important than other than someone’s life in Tollywood, it is Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Agnyaathavaasi’ movie. The film has created a huge buzz even before its teaser release. Pawan Kalyan’s fan following and craze took the hype on the film to an all-time high. With release in over 576+ locations in the US, and more than 90% theatres in the Telugu states.

The film’s teaser, audio and trailer propelled the premier collections and advance booking. The audio unarguably has been the best in Pawan Kalyan’s career. Few trade analysts even predict that ‘Agnyaathavaasi’ will re-write Baahubali – The Beginning records upon its release.

Pre-release Business

The film has already done a pre-release business of Rs. 162.9 crores in the form of theatrical rights, satellite rights, and music rights. The film’s distribution rights in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were sold for a record price of Rs. 95 Crores, while in Karnataka the film continued to break previous records. Distribution rights in Karnataka were sold for a hefty sum of Rs. 11 crores, while the Rest of India rights fetched Rs. 2.4 crores and satellite rights were purchased for Rs. 32.5 crores. The overseas distribution rights were sold for Rs. 19.5 crores.  Shockingly, the premier show collections in the US are inching towards $3 Million, or 19.1 crores.  Baahubali – The Beginning only had done a pre-release business of Rs. 122 crores.

Movie Talk

Post the screening for the censor certification, the censor board members were left stunned watching the film. Close sources to the CBFC board informed that the censor board members have never watched such a Tollywood movie, and the movie is likely to become a blockbuster at the box office. The film has been hailed for its script and direction. Pawan Kalyan performance will be the stand out element in the movie.

With the music being a grand hit, and the trailer receiving a tremendous response, the film is likely to become an industry hit. Pawan Kalyan who already has two industry hits, Kushi (2001) and Attarintiki Daredi (2013), might well have the third one with Agnyaathavaasi.

With the charm of Keerthi Suresh, and glamour of Anu Emmanuel, the romantic track in the film is going to be both exciting and entertaining. Other artists like Rao Ramesh, Murali Sharma, Kushboo further add to the depth of the film. And the recent number from Pawan Kalyan himself, ‘Kodaka Koteswara Rao….’, went on to become a chartbuster as soon as it is released, and will woo the audience from all centres.

Final Talk:

There are few things that will surely be debated upon the movie’s release. They are; collections and whether the movie is blockbuster or industry hit. Apart from it, there would not be a word about the movie’s performance at the box office. Just like people discuss movies collections on the basis of ‘Non-Baahubali records’, they should start saying it as, ‘Non – Baahubali, Non – Agnyaathavaasi’ collections from here. The film will likely end up as the second-highest grosser in the Telugu Film Industry, and will likely surpass Baahubali’s first-day movie collections.

Rajinikanth blunder with Spiritual Politics?

Posted [relativedate] at [relativetime time_format=”H:i”]

Tamil Nadu politics have become more interesting than a nail-biting finish between India and Pakistan. After the death of former CM Jayalalitha, the political equations in Tamil Nadu changed rapidly. Rajinikanth announced his entry into politics when everyone ruled him out. His inclusion in TN politics made things more complicated and worse. It was observed that even Kamal Hassan had slightly toned down his voice on social media with Rajini’s entry. The effect of Rajinikanth is mammoth on the state politics.

His fans and Tamil people were taken back after Rajinikanth announced that his party would fight for ‘Spiritual politics’. Many mistook it as ‘religious politics’ and linked Rajinikanth to BJP. Even the presence of ‘Lotus’ flower in the logo that was in the background of Rajinikanth’s political announcement speech sent similar signals to a common man. Though Rajinikanth removed the lotus flower from the logo and came up with ‘Apana Mudra’ and a ‘Snake’ encircling it, the common was left scratching his head to know the difference between spiritual and religious politics. Such is the situation in Tamil Nadu.

People often consider BJP as a synonym for religious politics. The party hardly has any foothold in the state and is desperately trying to make its presence felt. Meanwhile, the ‘spiritual concept’ introduced by Rajinikanth is far from the reality. ‘Spiritual’ politics mean; politics free from the influence of caste and religion. The main goal of spiritual politics is to achieve truthful, clean and straightforward politics.

Will Spiritual Politics work in our society?

We live in a society, where voters take money to vote for a given leader. Who is at fault? Is it the voter who is taking the money? Or the contestant who is offering the money? It is highly debatable. Given this kind of situation, is it really possible for a voter to stand upright? Reject the money he is being offered during the election campaigning? Can he proudly say ‘I’m not for sale’? No. He cannot. If not everyone, at least 95% will not reject the money being offered.

No wonder Rajinikanth speaks about ‘spiritualism’ and ‘spiritual’ politics. He has lived a life of a king, at least from last 2-3 decades. He might have realized happiness is more important than money. But that is not the case of an average working citizen. A common man has to strive for his livelihood each day. Whatever may come, and whatever may happen, he still needs to go to work every day. For many living in the society, happiness and luxury are linked with money. Spiritualism cannot feed him or can get his children educated. Everywhere it is money, and the hunger for money in the society has become so much, that many people are ready to do anything for money; be it a murder, theft or vandalizing.

For such kind of society, can Rajinikanth’s ‘spiritual politics’ mean any sense? Isn’t it foolish to preach about spiritualism to someone who is starving? If this is the way, Rajinikanth has chosen, one can say, he will meet the end of the road very soon.

 Is there a way out?

Definitely, there is a way out for the cinema superstar, to become a superstar in politics too. The primary responsibility of any political leader is to concentrate on the rising and prevailing socio-economic problems. Yes, Rajinikanth’s aim and dream of ‘spiritual politics’ is really inspiring and commendable, but not in a day-to-day life. The superstar must come out with various welfare schemes, without burdening the economic resources and at the same time. The change should come in a step-by-step manner. Nothing can be achieved overnight. And one shouldn’t expect the people to come out of their ‘nature’ of being habituated to corruption, bribery and indiscipline in their social lives. It can take a decade, or even a couple of decades, to bring a change what Rajinikanth is aiming to achieve under ‘spiritual politics’. Most of the voters wish for a government that showers subsidies, free usage of public services and welfare schemes that demand the least documentation, and verification. No one is interested in a government that cuts down the subsidies for unqualified people, puts a price on the exploitation of public services, and demands discipline at the social level.

Rajinikanth should be more careful in choosing the path towards his ultimate goal. He should be prepared to face reluctance and resistance, given his political ambitions, from the same people who have made him ‘demi-god’. The path to the destination is more important than his determination and dedication to better the lives of millions in Tamil Nadu. If that is not put into practice, Thalaiva should digest the fact that, someone who is starving, doesn’t give a damn about his ‘spiritual politics’.
