Ajit Agarkar applies for India selector’s role

0

Ajit Agarkar, the former India pacer, has applied for the national selector’s role, and is said to be in the race to take over as the new chairman of selectors of the men’s team. MSK Prasad’s five-year tenure as the chairman of selectors came to an end this month.

The veteran pacer, who has served as the chairman of the Mumbai senior team, confirmed about applying for the role on Friday (January 24). The fast bowler bagged 288 scalps in ODIs and also finished with 58 wickets in Tests. He holds the national record for the fastest to fifty ODI wickets.

Nayan Mongia, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Chetan Sharma and Rajesh Chauhan have also applied for the roles left vacant by Prasad and Gagan Khoda. The BCCI has set January 24 as the deadline to apply for the post.

“I have been wanting to apply for a long time but earlier, VB Chandrashekhar and Kris Srikkanth got a chance to represent from Tamil Nadu,” Sivaramakrishnan told. “The rotational system is not there anymore though. I think I have a good chance because I have been associated with the game constantly since the 1980s – in various capacities. As a commentator, I have had the opportunity to watch a lot of players in action.

New Zealand A level series through Worker ton

0

George Worker held firm through a top and middle-order wobble to compose a match-winning hundred as New Zealand A leveled the three-match 50-over series with a 29-run victory. While Worker deserves the lion’s share of the credit for putting his side on course for series parity, a pat on the back is also in order for No. 8 batsman Cole McConchie, whose 54-ball 56 helped his side to a defendable total in the end.

After a shaky start, Krunal Pandya (51 off 48) dragged the chase to the end, supported well by key contributions from Ishan Kishan (44 off 55) and Vijay Shankar (41 off 53), but it wasn’t enough.

For the second time in the series, Mayank Agarwal decided to bowl first and reaped a couple of early rewards as Mohammad Siraj and Axar Patel dismissed Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips for cheap. New Zealand A found themselves out of the early quandary through a defiant, albeit brief, partnership between Worker and Tom Bruce. Ishan Porel, however, returned for a second spell and wreaked havoc straightaway. He cleaned up Bruce first ball and had Tom Blundell trapped leg before for a first-ball duck. By the halfway stage, New Zealand lost half their side as Krunal Pandya removed left-handed Mark Chapman to leave the hosts in danger of folding for a paltry total and conceding the series, even as Worker went past a defiant fifty.

Their woes were further compounded when James Neesham retired hurt in the 31st over for a 19-ball 20, which left Worker stranded again. In stepped McConchie to turn the tide. From 146 for 5 – and a retired-hurt Neesham – New Zealand A went to 40 overs on 196 for 5, putting themselves in a position to get as close to 250 as possible. Worker upped the ante further with four boundaries in an 18-run 44th over and smashed two sixes off Siraj in the 46th which took the team past 250 runs. Porel bounced back from that poor over to end Worker’s exceptional innings – of 135 from 144 balls. Though McConchie fell in the 48th over – for a super 56 off 54 – Neesham batted out the last few overs to take New Zealand A to 295 for 7.

India A were crippled on the third ball of the chase, when the tall and strapping quick Kyle Jamieson sent Prithvi Shaw’s off-stump cartwheeling. Short partnerships – starting with Mayank and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s worth 47 runs – ensued but none threatening enough to throw New Zealand A off the game. Regular wickets meant India A struggled to keep up with the asking rate. Each of Mayank, Gaikwad and Suryakumar Yadav got off to good starts, but failed to make it count.

Vijay Shankar and Ishan Kishan shook India A out of their slumber, but New Zealand A broke that stand via a run out to leave India A behind the eight-ball once again. Vijay and Axar Patel forged two stands with Krunal Pandya – worth 40 and 56 runs respectively – but once Rachin Ravindra had Axar caught in the 45th over, India A were headed for a defeat. Krunal’s fighting effort took him past 50 runs in quick time and as far as the 48th over when Jacob Duffy sent him packing. India A dragged their feet in the last couple of overs to 266 for 9, falling well short of the target.

Brief Scores: New Zealand A 295/7 in 50 overs (George Worker 135, Cole McConchie 56; Ishan Porel 3-50, Mohammed Siraj 2-73) beat India A 266/9 in 50 overs (Krunal Pandya 51, Ishan Kishan 44; James Neesham 2-24, Jacob Duffy 2-35, Kyle Jamieson 2-69) by 29 runs

Rahul, Iyer show their worth as India make light work of 204 target

0

India has failed to win a T20I series in two previous attempts in New Zealand. But they did take positive first step towards correcting that anomaly, registering a six-wicket win in the first game of the series at Eden Park. India had a very quick turnaround since their last series – against Australia at home – and appeared rusty with the ball, especially in the PowerPlay, but their batting quality shone through as they hunted down a target of 204 with an over to spare.

Rahul lost his opening partner, Rohit Sharma, early in the chase but fed of serial “energizer bunny” Virat Kohli to give India’s chase the early impetus. The right-hander has been in breathtaking form and with his new ‘keeping role, his value to the side has grown by leaps. That security blanket reflects in his decision making in the middle. There were no half measures as he began his knock by hitting two boundaries off Mitchell Santner. The highlight of his early assault though was a short-arm pick-up shot off Tim Southee that sailed over the cow corner fence. Rahul’s onslaught allowed India to hit 65 in the PowerPlay – matching the asking rate for a 204 chase.

Iyer walked in at the fall of Rahul’s wicket, after the latter had put on a 99-run stand with Kohli. He’d faced only three balls when Kohli departed to the pavilion as well. Shivam Dube followed suit and what seemed a straightforward chase, suddenly turned slightly complicated. India needed 60 to win from the final six overs and a window was open for New Zealand to come back. Except Iyer shut that back in the hosts’ face with his audacious batting display, one that saw him continue from where he left the other night at Bangalore against Starc, Cummins & Co.

By targetting bowlers early in the overs. New Zealand appeared to have earned the momentum through Ish Sodhi in the middle when Iyer picked up 14 off the leggie to turn the tide in India’s favor once more. In the next over, he pulled a short ball over fine leg against Southee and followed that with consecutive fours to begin the 18th, bowled by debutant Hamish Bennett. Such was his confidence that he hit 18 off another Southee over, finishing with a towering six over mid-wicket to finish with a 200 strike-rate (58* off 29).

Most certainly not. Besides the middle-overs comeback with the ball led by Ish Sodhi, the hosts had a very productive outing with the bat. Colin Munro, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor struck rapid half-centuries to prop them up to 203. Munro waded through India’s feeble attempts at bouncing him out, setting the tone for New Zealand’s 68-run PowerPlay. Both he and Martin Guptill were smart in not taking any undue risks against Jasprit Bumrah, taking on the lesser seamers – Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami. The openers raced off to an 80-run stand before Shivam Dube dismissed Guptill to bring India back in the contest.

Like New Zealand would do in the second innings, India too bowled well through the middle phase of the innings chiefly through Yuzvendra Chahal but the experience and class of Williamson and Taylor and shone through with a pair of 25-ball half-centuries. Williamson played the angles of the Eden Park stadium to perfection, something Chahal missed when he walked in six steps at the cow corner boundary only to see the bail sail just over his head. While Williamson handled Thakur with a couple of sixes, Taylor turned back the clock off Shami’s 16th ball, rekindling his love for the shuffle and slog to cow-corner in a 22-run over. If not for Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance – going for only 16 off two death overs – India may have been chasing at least 10-15 extra runs.

Brief scores: New Zealand 203/5 in 20 overs (Colin Munro 59, Ross Taylor 54*, Kane Williamson 51; Jasprit Bumrah 1-31) lost to India 204/4 in 19 overs (KL Rahul 56, Shreyas Iyer 58*, Virat Kohli 45; Ish Sodhi 2-36) by six wickets.

CBI Special Court exempts Jagan from DA assets case on Friday

0

The Nampally CBI special court has started its hearing on chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s disproportionate assets case on Friday. The chief minister Jagan who was exempted for a personal appearance in the court last week is supposed to be present in the court today. Due to the chief minister being busy with government duties, the court has exempted Jagan from attending the hearing on Friday as well. However, Jagan’s lawyers and Vijayasai Reddy attended the hearing.

On the other hand, IAS Srilakshmi and Verdi Rajagopal, who are accused in the case, were present at the court. It is interesting to see what directives CBI special court would give in the case. After becoming chief minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy has sought the CBI special court to exempt him from personal appearance to the court. However, the CBI argued against it stating the as the accused is in the top position he could influence the witnesses.

China closes transport in eight cities around virus epicentre

0

China has now shut down bridges, halted public transport and closed a major airport to restrict the movement of some 26 million people around the epicenter of a deadly virus outbreak. Huangshi, with a population of 2.4 million, became the latest city in Hubei province to shut transport routes Friday as it closed a ferry terminal and bridge over the Yangtze River, and suspended public transport.

25 Indians trapped in Wuhan; coronavirus reaches Singapore, Vietnam The move followed the suspension of long-distance passenger buses, tourist coaches and public transport from Thursday night in Qianjiang, a city in central Hubei with a population of nearly one million people. Authorities said the measures were to prevent and control the spread of the new coronavirus, which has since infected more than 800 people and killed 25.

The virus first emerged from Wuhan in Hubei province, where a seafood market has been identified as the center of the outbreak. Trains and planes were halted from leaving Wuhan on Thursday as the city was placed under effective lockdown. Passenger boats and buses were also forbidden from entering the city.

Other cities with travel restrictions include Xiantao, a city of 1.5 million, and Chibi, which has some 500,000 people, which will close toll station entrances and halt transport routes. The cities of Ezhou, Huanggang, and Lichuan have also announced travel restrictions. Hubei province authorities said they were calling off cultural performances and public cultural venues. Travel agencies in the province have suspended business activities, and are no longer organizing tour groups, authorities said in an announcement on Friday. From 0400 GMT, the province will also stop operating online taxis and impose passenger restrictions on taxis on the roads.

0

Disclosing the details, SP Rama Rajeshwari said that Satish and Kalyan, both hailing from Madurai in Tamil Nadu would smuggle the ganja. Satish and Kalyan with the help of Ramu, Murthy and Ram Reddy procured the ganja for Rs 6 per kg and were selling for Rs 11 kg in Hyderabad and Rs 12 per kg in Chennai.

The gang used to transport the contraband to Sri Lanka via Rameshwaram. On specific information that the gang was in Hyderabad, the police nabbed them. Match timings in focus ahead of IPL GC meeting

0

The Indian Premier League governing council is all set to meet in New Delhi on Monday, January 27, and once again, top on the agenda, is the match-timing. As the league makes a final rush to come up with the schedule for the 2020 edition, sorting out Rajasthan Royals’ request to play in Guwahati among other things, the call to change the start of evening matches from 8 to 7.30 pm is in focus again.

The debate on advancing the start of an evening game to 7.30 pm has raged for two seasons now. In 2018, Star had “requested” for a 7 pm start and later changed their demand to 7.30. This year again, they have left it to the BCCI to consider their request.

The BCCI has not discussed this matter with any of the franchises, formally or informally. The broadcaster’s demand is based on the following logic: A) An early start followed by an early wrap up (post-match presentation) will significantly increase viewership and help with the ratings; B) Sponsors of the league and franchises will get more exposure; C) Crowds will be able to retire early than having to wait until midnight.

However, there are aspects that don’t sit well with the idea of an early start either. Heading into the month of February, the IPL 2020 schedule is still not out yet and one of the reasons behind the delay is whether or not to play in Guwahati – a request put in by Rajasthan Royals.

Royals have been looking to play some matches outside of Jaipur – a decision born out of compulsions that they are not ready to spell out yet. Royals have, in fact, made the specific request that they would like to play their first two matches of the season in Guwahati.

Poco X2 May Just Have Been Teased by the Company Ahead of Launch

0

Poco X2 appears to have been teased by Poco India ahead of its official announcement, with the brand’s Season 2 earlier this week now found to have an Easter egg that mentions the name. The new smartphone was recently spotted on Geekbench along with some hardware specifications and early benchmark results. Poco is speculated to have at least three new smartphones in the pipeline — one of which would be the highly anticipated Poco F2 that is believed to be the successor to the Poco F1. The brand, which has just been separated from Xiaomi, is also rumored to have an affordable option that could be dubbed the Poco F2 Lite.

Poco India earlier this week teased its “Season 2” through an 18-second video. The video didn’t explicitly suggest any new developments. However, a tipster who goes by the pseudonym Xiaomishka on Twitter has tried to decode the message that seems to hint at the name “Poco X2”. You can see the Easter egg in the image above, where the phone’s name can be seen spelled out on a particular screen.

While speaking with Gadgets 360 earlier this week, Poco India General Manager C Manmohan didn’t specify the model names that are in the pipeline. Nevertheless, the executive did indicate that the brand would cater to multiple price segments and would continue its philosophy of launching value-for-money smartphones.

According to a recent report, Poco is planning to bring three new phones under the Poco F2 series. Some leaked images purportedly showing off the Poco F2 Lite also surfaced online.

Poco India is so far tight-lipped on its smartphone lineup, though a listing on the Geekbench site suggested the development of the Poco X2. The listing included the presence of Android 10 on the new Poco phone along with a Qualcomm chip that could be the Snapdragon 730G, which was featured on the Redmi K30 last month.

It is likely that Poco India would come with multiple smartphone options since it just last week got separated from Xiaomi and is in plans to establish its native reach in the country. However, it is unclear whether the brand has the Poco X2 as its next smartphone or bring the Poco F2 to begin the action.

ISRO Starts Work on Chandrayaan-3 Mission Ahead of 2021 Launch

0

In its second attempt to soft-land on the Moon, India began working on its third lunar mission — Chandrayaan-3 — which is scheduled for launch in early 2021, a top space official said on Wednesday. On January 1, Sivan told the media in Bengaluru that the government had approved the ambitious mission for soft-landing of a spacecraft and a rover near the Moon’s south pole in the later part of 2020 or early 2021.

India’s maiden attempt to soft-land at the designated spot on the Moon failed on September 7, 2019, when Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram spacecraft crash-landed due to a velocity glitch.

The space agency spent Rs. 960 crores on the Chandrayaan-2 mission, whose Orbiter is circling around the moon at about 100 km from the lunar surface in an elliptical motion since August 20 last.

On India’s maiden manned mission ‘Gaganyaan’, Sivan said that four Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots selected with three of them as crew would soon visit Russia for training.

“Gaganyaan will be a historic mission for the country as three Indian astronauts will fly in a space module designed and developed indigenously,” asserted Sivan, a rocket specialist.

Former IAF Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to fly in space on board the Russian Soyuz-11 mission on April 2, 1984.

On return from Russia, the IAF quartet will undergo module-specific training at the space agency’s human space flight center in this tech city where critical technologies for space missions are being developed.

Asserting that the manned mission was not a one-off feat or exercise to send a human being into space, the ISRO Chairman said: “Gaganyaan is not just about sending a man into space but creating opportunities for national and overseas collaborations with other space-faring nations”.

Christchurch to host 2021 Women’s World Cup final

0

Christchurch’s Hagley Oval will be the follow-up act to Lord’s 2017 after the famous New Zealand venue was chosen to host the final of the 2021 Women’s World Cup. Christchurch, which will see the summit clash played under lights, is one of six shortlisted cities that’ll host the tournament during its February 6 – March 7 runtime. Hamilton and Tauranga will host the two semifinals.

Incidentally, Christchurch hosted the first-ever Women’s World Cup final in 1982 – the 1973 & 1978 editions were played in the league format – when Australia beat England at the now-closed Jade Stadium for their second title.

In preparation of the iconic clash on March 7, 2021, the Hagley Oval will see the installation of new light towers with the lights ready to use by October. The request from the Canterbury Cricket Trust (CCT) for new broadcast-standard lights was approved last month, allowing the installation of 49-meter-long light towers. The picturesque ground had previously hosted three matches during the 2015 men’s World Cup. Even then, it had been granted the resource consent for four removable light stands, but the stands weren’t installed as all the games were day affairs.

The 50-over Women’s World Cup of 2021 will be an eight-team event and feature 31 matches played across the six aforementioned cities. Hosts New Zealand and the four top teams from the ICC Women’s Championship 2017-20 will gain direct qualification.

Australia have already sealed qualification to the tournament while defending champions England, 2017 finalists India and Pakistan are currently rounding off the top-four places.

Zim Vs Sl: Mathews hundred gives SL the lead

0

Angelo Mathews scored his tenth Test century and helped Sri Lanka gain a 12-run lead as they went to lunch on the fourth day on 370 for 5 in Harare on Wednesday (January 22). Dhananjaya de Silva was the only wicket to fall in the session as he made a 112-ball 63.

The first landmark of the day went to de Silva as he completed his half-century in the 108th over after Sri Lanka started the day on 295 for 4. Mathews completed his century seven overs later – off 272 balls – to ensure Sri Lanka looked set to pick up the ante. That plan, though, was jolted as Victor Nyauchi claimed his third wicket and sent back de Silva. He was caught at mid-on trying to force the pace.

Things could have been slightly in favor of Zimbabwe had Regis Chakabva not put down Mathews in the 124th over. The batsman got a thick outside edge trying to cut a length delivery only for the ‘keeper to grass the opportunity. He was in trouble once again against Ainsley Ndlovu in the 128th over as he almost chopped back a delivery onto the stumps before it bounced back. Niroshan Dickwella and Mathews stretched their association to 45 off 106 at the break as Zimbabwe continued to toil.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 358 (Craig Ervine 85; Lasith Embuldeniya 5-114) trail Sri Lanka 370/5 (Angelo Mathews 129*; Victor Nyauchi 3-56) by 12 runs.

ISRO’s NAVigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is coming soon to Android phones in India. Hyped as an alternative to Global Positioning System ( GPS), the NavIC satellite technology is designed to deliver accurate position information service to Indian and neighboring countries users as well. The technology is all set for a commercial application in future Android smartphones in mid-range and budget phones as the chipset giant Qualcomm has announced new processors with the ISRO technology. Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662 and Snapdragon 460 processors that will power future budget and mid-range smartphones.

The chipset company said it had introduced support up to seven satellite constellations simultaneously, including the use of all of NavIC’s operating satellites, in its Qualcomm Location suite.

Additional big drive to ISRO’s GPS technology is coming from Xiaomi and Realme, which rules the sub Rs 20,000 smartphone segment in the Indian market. Both these companies have confirmed the usage of Snapdragon 720G processor for their upcoming phones. ISRO’s NavIC adoption will minimize the dependence on American GPS technology for navigation. We can expect apps like Uber and Google Maps to influence the technology to deliver further more accurate location information service.
