Officials said identification of black spots and corrective measures helped in bringing down the number of accidents

Hyderabad: Battered as they might be, Hyderabad roads are however a little bit safer than they were last year, if the number of fatal accidents and deaths from January to September are considered.

According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, some corrective steps appear to have saved several lives in the city, with pedestrian deaths coming down by 17 per cent, the overall number of deaths in accidents reducing by 11 per cent and the number of fatal accidents down by 13 per cent.

Officials said identification of black spots and corrective measures helped in bringing down the number of accidents. As against 225 fatal accidents from January to September in 2018, this year there were only 196 in the corresponding period. The number of deaths came down from 232 to 206.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar said the police took up several corrective measures to ensure safety of commuters. “Joint inspections with other stakeholders, including GHMC, Hyderabad Road Development Corporation, Roads and Buildings Department and National Highways Authority of India, were held. Based on the findings, various corrective measures were taken up on the roads,” he said.

Of the total 196 accidents reported in 2019, 116 were attributed to speeding, 46 to negligent driving, 12 to drunk driving, eight due to negligence of driver/pedestrian and six due to minor driving.

The metro authority said that the picture was old and that it had been rectified.

Photos of a large crack on the wall of a metro station in Hyderabad surfaced on social media on Thursday, leading to panic after a woman died last month at a metro station. In an appeal to commuters, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) said that there was no reason to panic.

Posting an image of the crack, one Twitter user said, “Poor quality of construction of Hyderabad Metro was once again exposed at Prakash Nagar Metro station.”

However, HMRL MD N V S Reddy said that the crack had already been rectified, and asked the general public not to believe the old photos that were circulating on social media.

Some old pictures of surface crack rectification works etc, are being posted and circulated by some persons. As I mentioned, we are closely monitoring the rectification works by L&T and there is no need for pressing the panic button,” Reddy tweeted.

The metro authority said that the picture was old and that it had been rectified.

“At some places, the plaster is thicker, and at such places, the plaster and surface cracks are being removed and rectified by six L&T teams during the night, with boom lifts and other equipment, without obstruction to traffic,” he added.

Last month, the death of a 24-year-old woman who was standing under a metro station had caused wide outrage. Mounika was taking shelter from the rain at the pedestrian zone under the Ameerpet metro station when a chunk of mortar from the station fell on her.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) had agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family, besides another Rs 15 lakh from an insurance company and offered a job to a family member.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) also initiated a probe into the incident. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao ordered an inquiry to check the quality of metro rail structures.

Rajnath Singh Defends Performing ‘Shastra Puja’ For Rafale Jets Amid Controversy

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that the seven Rafale fighter jets which India has procured from France will arrive in April or May next year.

Singh made his statement after arriving from France where he had gone for the official handover of the first fighter jet. The ceremony had sparked a massive debate after Singh performed a ‘Shastra puja’, etching ‘Om’ on the aircraft and adorning it with flowers.

Several leaders including Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had hit out saying it had been akin to a puja performed for a new truck.

“People can say whatever they want. I did what I thought was right and I will continue to do so. This is our faith, that there is a superpower and I have believed it since childhood,” was Rajnath Singh‘s response.

A report by the news outlet ANI also quoted the BJP leader as saying that people should have the right to pray according to their beliefs and that he would not have objected to the criticism if everyone had felt the same way.

“I feel there must have been a difference of opinion over the issue in Congress as well,” he said while referring to the differing stands taken by Maharashtra Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam and Leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

According to Defence Minister, the France visit had been a success and he had also held a 35-minute meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“After induction of Rafale fighter aircraft, the combat capability of the Indian Air Force will increase. We don’t want to intimidate anyone by doing so. We will neither fear anyone nor will we intimidate,” ANI quoted the Defence Minister as saying.

Govt Giving Sector-specific Solutions to Fight Slowdown in Economic Growth, Says Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday stated that the government is providing sector-specific resolutions to combat the slowdown in economic increase. She, however, avoided a particular question on whether the government believes if the country is amid an economic slowdown.

India’s GDP development has reduced to a six-year low of five percent for the June quarter. This has directed to a wave of downward changes in expectations, including from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) which now demands GDP growth to get down to 6.1 percent in FY20.

The government has taken a slew of measures, including a massive cut in corporate taxes to revive economic growth, even at the cost of sacrificing revenues.

Hinting at other measures like steps to improve exports, easing credit, making more money available by early repayments to vendors and front-loading of banks recapitalization, Sitharaman said the government has been working on sector-specific measures.

“We are providing support to all the sectors who need help,” Sitharaman said.

Her remarks came hours after global ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service clearly slashed its FY20 GDP growth projection for India to 5.8 percent.

watchOS 5.3.2 Update Released for Apple Watch Series 4 Connected to Older iPhone’s

Apple has released watchOS 5.3.2 for the Apple Watch Series 4. The new update is designed specifically for Apple Watch Series 4 users who don’t own an iPhone that isn’t compatible with iOS 13 and doesn’t support watchOS 6. The Cupertino company last month released watchOS 5.3.2 first for the Apple Watch Series 3 and older models. Majorly, the update addresses some security issues and doesn’t include any new features, such as additional watch faces or the App Store that we saw through watchOS 6 last month.

Unlike watchOS 6 that requires your iPhone to run iOS 13, watchOS 5.3.2 is meant for an iPhone model that isn’t compatible with iOS 13. It could the iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, or an earlier iPhone model.

Apple originally released watchOS 5.3.2 for the Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2, and Apple Watch Series 3 alongside iOS 12.4.2 last month. However, the update is now heading to the Apple Watch Series 4.

The watchOS 5.3.2 update doesn’t bring any noticeable changes to the Apple Watch Series 4. Nevertheless, it enables the older iPhone users to utilize some of the security enhancements and performance upgrades that Apple seeded originally to earlier Apple Watch models.

As per the information provided on the Apple support page, watchOS 5.3.2 fixes the flaw that was reported back in July and could enable a remote attacker to cause unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution.

11 Doctors at Govt Hospital Test Positive for Dengue in Aurangabad

Eleven doctors of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here have tested positive for dengue, officials said on Wednesday.

From September this year, dengue has so far claimed the lives of at least seven persons in the city, they said.

“The number of dengue-infected people is rising in Aurangabad. Now, 11 doctors and medical students of the GMCH have tested positive for dengue,” Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) superintendent, Dr. Kailas Jhine, told PTI.

These doctors and students were admitted to the GMCH, he said, adding that five of them were discharged on Tuesday after treatment, while four others are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) there.

“Although they are out of danger, they have been kept under observation. One of the patients was shifted to Mumbai as per the family’s request,” June added.

GMCH dean Dr Kanan Yelikar said heaps of garbage lying in the city should be blamed for the rising dengue cases.

“The garbage issue is indirectly responsible for this,” she said.

According to her, the GMCH is also facing the problem of shortage of diagnosis kits.
“We have demanded funds from the civic body for it. Presently, we are getting 100 to 150 dengue samples per day,” she said.

Head of the health department of Aurangabad Municipal Corporation, Dr Neeta Padalkar, said that Rs 2.5 lakh are being transferred to the GMCH for the purchase of kits for dengue tests.

“From September, dengue has claimed the lives of seven persons in Aurangabad. Of the six persons died last month,” she said.

Have not said anything wrong: Rahul Gandhi defends Modis are thieves remark in court

Rahul Gandhi pleads not guilty in a criminal defamation case
Congress leader accused of defaming entire Modi community with his ‘thieves share Modi surname’ remark
Rahul Gandhi not required to remain present during next hearing on Dec 10

congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday pleaded not guilty in the defamation case filed against him for his all thieves share the Modi surname’ remark.

During the hearing in the case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told the Surat court that he did not say anything wrong when he said all thieves share the Modi surname.

Chief Judicial Magistrate B H Kapadia had in May issued summons to Gandhi after admitting a complaint filed by local BJP MLA Purnesh Modi under IPC sections 499 and 500, which deal with criminal defamation.

During the last hearing in July, the court had granted Gandhi exemption from personal appearance for that hearing and fixed October 10 as the next date of hearing.

Rahul Gandhi, back in the country, was welcomed by party workers in Surat on Thursday.

What is the case

The court, while admitting the suit, had held that there was a prima facie case of criminal defamation against the Lok Sabha member from Wayanad.

Narendra Modi… how come they all have Modi as common surname?

In his complaint, Purnesh Modi had said the Congress leader had defamed the entire Modi community with his statement. Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda on Tuesday held a meeting with local party leaders in view of Gandhi’s visit.

Mary Kom secures historic 8th world medal after reaching semifinal

Six-time World champion M C Mary Kom on Thursday secured an unprecedented eighth medal at the World Women’s Boxing Championship after advancing to (51kg) semifinals of the event at Ulan-Ude in Russia. The pugilist defeated Colombia’s Valencia Victoria via a unanimous 5-0 verdict to reach the final four.

With the win, Mary Kom improved her record as the most successful boxer in the history of the tournament. Before the start of the tournament, she had six gold and silver in her kitty in 48kg category. This is the first time the Manipuri boxer has secured a world medal in the 51kg category. She had finished a quarterfinalist in this division in the past.

Securing her 8th medal, Mary Kom also surpassed Cuban’s Felix Savon, who had seven medals in the tournament and Ireland’s Katie Taylor, who had 6 World medals in her career.

Mary Kom will face second-seeded Turk Busenaz Cakiroglu in the semifinals on Saturday. Cakiroglu, who is currently the reigning European Championships and European Games gold-medallist, went past China’s Cai Zongju in her quarterfinal bout to set herself a clash against the Indian boxer.

In a tactful performance, Mary Kom waited for her chances and defended sharply to ensure that Victoria’s plan to impress the judges by throwing in more punches didn’t yield results. The Indian’s huge reservoir of experience came in handy as she swung her right arm masterfully to connect well-placed hooks. Her straight punches were as effective and regularly pierced through Victoria’s reasonably strong defense.

Mary Kom’s incredible career is also studded with an Olympic bronze medal (2012), five Asian titles, gold medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, besides numerous other international top finishes. This year alone, she won gold medals at the India Open in Guwahati and President’s Cup in Indonesia. She is also a sitting member of the Rajya Sabha.

Rupee rises 20 paise to 70.87 against USD in early trade

0

the Indian rupee appreciated by 20 paise to 70.87 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, as easing crude prices and optimism regarding US-China trade talks strengthened investor sentiments.

On Wednesday, rupee had settled at 71.07 against the US dollar.

The domestic unit however could not hold on to the gains and was trading at 71.03 against the dollar at 1008 hrs.

Meanwhile, ahead of the next round of trade negotiations between the two giant economies, US President Donald Trump said China is facing their hardest time in decades in maintaining the economy and badly wants to have a trade deal with the US.

“China is having a hard time at this moment. And I think they’d like to make a deal very badly. And so we have a lot of things that are really exciting,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Moreover, weakening of the American currency vis-a-vis other currencies overseas also supported the rupee.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.17 per cent to trade at USD 58.22 per barrel.

Market participants, however, said sustained foreign fund outflows and cautious opening in domestic equities weighed on the local unit.

Domestic bourses opened on a cautious note on Thursday with benchmark indices Sensex trading 83.99 points lower at 38,093.96 and Nifty down 41.10 points at 11,272.20.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market, pulling out Rs 485.24 crore on Wednesday, according to provisional exchange data.

The 10-year government bond yield was at 6.46 per cent in morning trade.

Jio starts charging for voice calls from today: Everything to know in 10 points

0

Reliance Jio said on Wednesday that it will start charging 6 paise per minute for voice calls made from its network to other operators.

HIGHLIGHTS

Jio has started charging its users 6 paise/minute for voice calls to other networks.
Jio to Jio and Jio to landline calls will remain free.
Jio is offering IUC plans that come with data benefits to ensure there is no increase in tariff for customers.

on Wednesday, Reliance Jio announced that it will start charging its customers 6 per minute for voice calls made to users of another telecom network. This would have no doubt come as a surprise for Jio subscribers who have been enjoying free voice calls so far. Jio, which entered the Indian telecom market with a bang a few years ago and created a major tariff war ever since, said on Wednesday that it was “compelled” to charge its users 6 paise/minute.

Jio is doing this to recover the 6 paise/minute IUC (Interconnect Usage Charge) that the company pays other telcos to use their network during calls. Customers will have to pay IUC charges until TRAI brings the fee down to zero, which is expected to happen on January 1, 2020. The new regulation by Jio is already in effect, so here’s a quick 10-point explainer of what this means to you and what other telecom networks are saying.

1. Under the new regulations, a Jio subscriber calling someone using a different operator like Airtel or Vodafone-Idea will be charged 6 paise per minute till the time you keep ringing. The 6 paise per minute charge will be made through IUC top-up vouchers.

2. Jio is offering four new IUC plans that also come with additional data benefits in order to ensure there is no increase in tariff for customers.

— The Rs 10 plan offers 124 IUC minutes to non-Jio numbers and 1GB additional data.
— The Rs 20 plan offers 249 IUC minutes and 2GB data.
— The Rs 50 plan offers 656 IUC minutes and 5GB data
— The Rs 100 plan offers 1,362 IUC minutes and 10GB data.

3. Jio assures that the 6 paise per minute charge will only apply for Jio users calling non-Jio users. All Jio to Jio calls will continue to remain free as will all incoming calls, Jio to landline calls and calls made using WhatsApp, FaceTime and other similar platforms.

4. Jio says that it has been hit by the price differential of free voice on Jio network and high tariff on 2G networks on Airtel and Vodafone-Idea. Jio says it receives 25-30 crore missed calls daily by 2G users, which results in 65-75 crore minutes of outgoing traffic rather than incoming traffic.

5. Two years ago, TRAI brought down IUC charge from 14 paise to 6 paise per minute with an intention to scrap the charge from January 1, 2020. Due to the high tariff on 2G networks, Jio is currently the net payer of IUC while Airtel and Vodafone Idea are net revenue gainers, Economic Times reports. “So far, in the last three years Jio has paid nearly Rs 13,500 crore as net IUC charges to the other operators,” Jio said in the statement.

6. TRAI recently decided to seek views on delaying zero IUC charge as there are still millions of 2G subscribers who have not moved to VoLTE, so it seems unlikely that the zero-IUC regulation will come into effect any time soon.

7. Analyst say that Jio’s move will benefit rivals Airtel and Vodafone-Idea, which has been bleeding financially for the past few years due to the ultra-low tariffs offered by Jio. Now, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea may use this opportunity to hike voice rates, bringing an end to the tariff war.

8. Vodafone Idea responded to Jio’s move in a statement saying that the announcement “comes closely to the action taken recently to potentially hurt revenues of other operators with its recent unilateral action of reducing ringing time.” The company adds, “Vodafone Idea operates basis the singular principle of pro-consumer and pro-choice. Accordingly, our offerings are completely transparent, affordable and cater to a cross section of society and consumers with varying consumption needs via multiple technologies 2G, 3G and 4G.”

9. Airtel also issued a statement where it reiterates Vodafone Idea’s position that the telecom industry is in a state of deep financial stress. The adoption of VoLTE has been slow while 2G subscribers are still high, causing an asymmetry in traffic. “Given the massive 2G customer base in India, the cost of the call at 6 paise is already significantly below the real cost of completing the call.”

10. Jio says the IUC rate will be charged till the time TRAI moves to zero termination charge, which is expected to happen by December 31, 2019.

To Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Remark On Kashmir, India’s Reply

Moments following Chinese President Xi Jinping said Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan that he was avidly observing the Kashmir condition, India restated on Wednesday that it would be in everybody’s kindest credits if other countries tarried out of its domestic affairs.

“We have seen the news regarding the conference of Chinese President Xi Jinping with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, which also leads to their talks on Kashmir,” told Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar. “India’s stance has been steady and transparent that Jammu and Kashmir is an indispensable part of India. China is well conscious of our situation. It is not for other countries to talk on the domestic affairs of India.”

China – which requires to be Pakistan’s “all-weather companion” – has strengthened its charges of extensive slaughter in Jammu and Kashmir on global stages ever since the region’s special status was dismissed on August 5. However, Imran Khan was made to reveal last month that his government’s attempts to internationalize the subject had abandoned to make an impact on world leaders.

In his Wednesday meeting, Xi Jinping assured Imran Khan that it would encourage Pakistan on matters relevant to its “core concerns”. State-owned Xinhua News organization also cited him as declaring that although the “right and wrong” of the circumstances were clear, India and Pakistan should resolve the condition through friendly dialogue.

Xi Jinping’s comments seem to have led to some embarrassment, given that he is registered to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai for an intimate summit later this week. “The forthcoming Chennai Informal Summit will give the two leaders with an event to continue their conversations on overarching matters of mutual, regional and global importance, and exchange opinions on expanding India-China Closer Development Partnership,” the government mentioned in a report.

A common report published after Imran Khan’s meeting with Xi Jinping stated that the “Kashmir problem is a discussion left from history, and should be accurately and composedly proposed based on the UN Charter”.

China, the report read, is “paying close consideration to the prevailing situation in Jammu & Kashmir”.

“China denies any one-sided actions that compound the situation. The two sides emphasized that a peaceful, constant, united and prosperous South Asia was in common benefit of all parties. Parties need to resolve conflicts and concerns in the region through conversation on the basis of identity and mutual respect,” the report further said.
