“Absolute Bonkers”: Michael Vaughan Fumes After Kagiso Rabada Cops One-Match Ban

0

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday handed a one-match ban to South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada following his celebration after removing England captain Joe Root in the ongoing third Test. As a result, Kagiso Rabada is now set to miss the final Test of the four-match series. After the first Day’s play on Thursday, Kagiso Rabada admitted to the offense as he copped a demerit point for his gestures on the field. After the ban, former England captain Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to express his views and called the decision “absolutely bonkers”.

“Rabada getting a 1 game ban for celebrating taking the Wicket of the opponents best player is absolutely bonkers … Over rates & slow play, nothing gets done … Celebrate a wicked and you are banned … The World is bloody nuts … #SAvENG,” Michael Vaughan tweeted.

On Day 1, South Africa managed to pick four wickets before stumps after England openers provided a solid start for the visitors.

England were 117 for two at tea after captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat on a placid pitch on a hot, sunny day.

Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley gave England a solid start, reaching lunch at 61 for no wicket.

But South Africa came back strongly, dismissing both opening batsmen in similar circumstances and keeping a tight rein on the scoring rate after lunch.

Kagiso Rabada had Sibley caught at backward square leg for 36 and Anrich Nortje had Crawley caught in the same position for 44.

South Africa picked new cap Dane Paterson as a specialist fast bowler in place of all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.

Vivo Phone With 5G Support, 55W Fast Charging Support Surfaces

0

Vivo appears to have a new 5G phone in the pipeline that would support 55W fast charging technology. A listing on the China Compulsory Certificate (CCC aka 3C) database has suggested the existence of the new Vivo phone. It emerges days after a Vivo smartphone carrying model number V1950A surfaced on China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center (TENAA).

That was believed to debut as the Vivo Nex 3 5G along with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. The smartphone was found to have a 64-megapixel primary rear camera sensor and a 16-megapixel selfie camera sensor.

As per the listing on the 3C database, the unannounced Vivo phone carries model number V1955A. The listing mentions that the phone comes bundled with a 55W charger with model number V5550L0A0-CN. This suggests 55W fast charging support on the unannounced Vivo phone.

If we look at Vivo’s existing portfolio, the company may unveil the new model under its iQoo sub-brand that already has the Vivo iQoo Neo 855 with 33W fast charging support. The handset would offer some new gaming experiences — given gamers as the target audience for the iQoo.

The 3C listing of the unannounced Vivo phone doesn’t reveal any of its key specifications. Also, the launch details of the offering are yet to surface.

Vivo received the latest certification from the authority on January 15, as mentioned on the listing. This suggests that the new phone may arrive sometime in the coming future. It is likely to get official around the debut of the Vivo Nex 3 5G that was purportedly spotted on TENAA with model number V1950A just last week.

Android-focussed blog Playfuldroid.com was the first to report about the Vivo phone carrying model number V1955A.

MS Dhoni Dropped from BCCI central contract for 2019-20

0

MS Dhoni has been omitted by the BCCI from a 27-member list of central contract awardees for the 2019-20 season. The 38-year-old former India captain, who hasn’t played competitively since India’s World Cup semifinal exit to New Zealand at Old Trafford, had held an ‘A’ category contract in the previous cycle viz. 2018-19.

Dhoni’s omission is a possible indicator that the legendary World Cup-winning captain’s days as India cricketer are numbered. The keeper-batsman took a sabbatical in the immediate aftermath of India’s World Cup exit but hasn’t been considered for selection thereafter with Chief Selector MSK Prasad stating that the team was “moving on” from Dhoni.

While Dhoni has remained tight-lipped over his future, hinting suggestively at possible clarity in January 2020, head coach Ravi Shastri, in an interview with IANS, left open a small chance of participation in this year’s T20 World Cup, but subject to his performance in the IPL and other selection dynamics.

Rahul, Shami elevated to Grade A; Mayank Agarwal handed Grade B retainer. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah continue to hold on to the A+ grade of contract which will see them pocket a whopping INR 7 crore over the period of September 2019 – October 2020.

KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami, who held the Grade B contract in the previous cycle, have been elevated to the INR 5 crore a year Grade A. Test match ‘keeper Wriddhiman Saha moves up the pay grade from C to B and will pocket INR 3 crore. Rishabh Pant retains his Category A contract despite losing his spot as first-choice Test ‘keeper to Saha while Mayank Agarwal, who enjoyed a breakthrough start to his Test career, is named in Grade B after being handed his first central contract.

Those that broke into India’s limited-overs squads over the last year – Shreyas Iyer, Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Washington Sundar – have been handed Category C retainers and will take home INR 1 crore retainers.

Dinesh Karthik, Khaleel Ahmed and Ambati Rayudu are the three other contracted players from the previous season to lose out on their central contracts.

Google Set to Say Goodbye to Chrome Apps From March This Year

0

Google has announced that it will begin phasing out support for Chrome apps across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms starting this year. From March, Chrome Web Store will stop accepting new Chrome apps, while developers will get the option to update their existing apps through June 2022, the company said in a blog post. The new development is a follow-up of the announcement that Google made back in August 2016 to reveal the departure of Chrome apps. The search giant had cited “less usage” as the primary reason for its decision to kill the apps that were initially designed to take on traditional Web apps.

The timeline provided by Google has confirmed that Chrome Web Store will no longer accept new Chrome apps from March. The company will also end support for Chrome apps on Windows, macOS, and Linux starting June this year. However, customers on Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will get a policy in place to extend support through December.

Chrome OS users will continue to receive support for Chrome apps until June 2021. Support for NaCI, PNaCI, and PPAPI APIs will also go offline from June next year. Moreover, Google will end support for Chrome apps on Chrome OS for all users from June 2022.

The changes in Chrome apps won’t impact support for Chrome extensions. a dedicated hub has been provided for developers to help them migrate their Chrome apps to Web apps or build Android apps for Chrome OS. Developers also have the option to transform their experiences by working on Chrome extensions or build Progressive Web App (PWA) solutions.

Google believes that developers would move from Chrome apps and start using open Web standards such as PWA over time. This would eventually help users avail of similar experiences of Chrome apps across all modern browsers.

Ind Vs Aus: India Look To Keep Series Alive In Rajkot

0

India, after suffering a 10-wicket loss in the series opener, will look to stay alive in the three-match One-day International (ODI) series when they take on Australia in Rajkot on Friday. India captain Virat Kohli, who came in to bat at number four, failed with the willow as India were bowled out for a below-par score of 255. Australian openers David Warner and Aaron Finch then scored unbeaten centuries to help the visitors go 1-0 up in the series. The trouble for Team India continued as ahead of the second ODI, Rishabh Pant, who was hit on his head in the first ODI, was ruled out due to a concussion injury.

After the loss in Mumbai, opener Shikhar Dhawan had said that he was ready to bat at the number three slot if asked by the team management. Dhawan, who was the top scorer for India in the first game, mentioned that it is up to the skipper where he wants to bat.

Shreyas Iyer, who came in to bat at number five, registered a rare failure on Tuesday. With Pant out of contention for the must-win game, Virat Kohli will look to add more balance to the side.

Kedar Jadhav and Shivam Dube are the two all-rounders that can replace the wicketkeeper-batsman in the playing XI. The bowlers had a poor game in Mumbai and the captain might look to make a change in the pace attack by bringing in Navdeep Saini, who impressed one and all during the Twenty20 International series against Sri Lanka.

Ravindra Jadeja looks a certainty and so the choice would be between the two wrist spinners; Kuldeep Yadav, who conceded 55 runs in the first ODI and Yuzvendra Chahal as the lead spinner.

Bhuvneshwar set for NCA rehab after hernia surgery

0

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who suffered a sports hernia after the recently-concluded T20I series against West Indies, has undergone a successful surgery in London. The Indian pacer traveled to London with Yogesh Parmar, the Indian Cricket Team’s physiotherapist, on Thursday the 9th of January, and underwent surgery on Saturday, the 11th of January 2020.

Bhuvneshwar will now go through a rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. The hernia was Bhuvneshwar’s latest setback in an injury-riddled period since the Johannesburg Test of 2018, where he was the man of the match. Bhuvneshwar’s future was under a dark cloud after the injury and was entirely reliant on whether he was prescribed a surgical procedure, the usual course of action for a sports hernia. The treatment has been efficient in a bid to get him ready for the tour of New Zealand.

In other news, opening batsman Prithvi Shaw has completed his rehabilitation at the NCA after recovering from a left-shoulder injury. He has already departed for New Zealand for an A series and is raring to go, available for selection in the national side.

Realme 5i January OTA Update Brings December 2019 Security Patch

0

Realme 5i is now receiving the January OTA update. Users are reporting on the forum that the update is arriving over-the-air (OTA), and its version number is RMX2030EX_11_A.14. As per the changelog shared, the update brings the December 2019 Android security patch, bug fixes, as well as few cameras fixes. To recall, the Realme 5i was launched in India last week, and it went on sale in the country for the first time just a day ago. The phone is available on Flipkart and Realme.com.

Given that the sale has just only begun a day ago, only a few Realme 5i review unitholders and early adopters should receive this update immediately. New buyers should find the update once the phone arrives at their doorstep. A user forum post confirms that the update brings along the December 2019 Android security patch, and not the latest January 2020 one. The update also optimizes an issue of redness in front camera and improved clarity of wide-angle photos. It also fixes the low probability silent issue of gaming when users plug in their headphones after unplugging them once. As mentioned, the version number of the latest update is RMX2030EX_11_A.14, and its size is listed to be 2.59GB.

Because of the large update size, it is recommended that users download the update under a strong Wi-Fi connection and install it while the phone is on a charge. If you haven’t received a notification, Realme 5i users must check manually by going to Settings. Realme has also made available a manual download link on its support page. You can download it using the Simple Mode or Recovery Mode, and the process is mentioned on the support page itself.

Mi 10 Live Images Purportedly Leaked Online, Suggests a Hole-Punch

0

Mi 10, the next-generation flagship by Xiaomi that is speculated to debut sometime next month, has purportedly been leaked in a couple of live images. The images give a glimpse at what we would see from the Chinese company this year in terms of its new premium offering. The Mi 10 will debut alongside the Mi 10 Pro.

Both new Xiaomi phones will offer 5G support, the company confirmed in the recent past. At the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 last month, Xiaomi announced that the Mi 10 will be amongst the first few smartphones to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, which is designed for premium mobile devices.

The live images of the Mi 10 have been leaked by an Instagram user techdroider. One of the leaked images suggests that the phone sports a curved-edge display along with a hole-punch design. The front panel of the handset looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10. Also, the image suggests that there is MIUI 11.0.2.

At the back, the leaked image suggests that Mi 10 would include quad rear camera setup, paired with an LED flash module. There is also a shiny, gradient back finish along with a Xiaomi logo vertically placed at the bottom of the rear panel.

The latest leak isn’t in line with a screen protector suggesting the design of the Mi 10 a few days back. The screen protector hinted at a full-screen experience — without any hole-punch design or a notch. However, it is likely that Xiaomi would consider that experience of the Mi 10 Pro to give a distinctive look and feel between the two Mi 10-series phones.

Since Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed any specifics around the Mi 10, except revealing its chip details, it is safe to consider the latest revelation with a pinch of salt.

Stirling blinder helps Ireland edge West Indies in high-scoring thriller

0

After a 0-3 drubbing in the preceding ODI series, Ireland came back strongly against the West Indies, edging the hosts by four runs in the first of three T20Is, at St. George’s Park, Grenada.

Ireland, who opted to bat first, blazed away in the powerplay and hammered the highest score in a T20I powerplay – an unprecedented 93 for no loss, courtesy a brutal exhibition of ball-striking from Kevin O’Brien and Paul Stirling. The latter outscored his partner by a huge margin and the hosts looked in utter disarray before the returning Dwayne Bravo came to their rescue and knocked over O’Brien. Stirling followed soon after, dismissed by Hayden Walsh Junior, and missed out on a well-deserved hundred.

The damage is done, however, it was already quite significant, as Kesrick Williams and Khary Pierre received hiding of a lifetime before the experience of Bravo brought about some damage control. In fact, Pierre and Cottrell, who had had poor opening spells, went on to pick up a couple of wickets each and potentially truncated the target by about thirty runs. Still, Ireland’s 208 was bound to be competitive.

The sixathon continued during the West Indian chase, as the batsmen played supporting cameos around a ravaging Evin Lewis (53 off 29). However, a steady rate of fall of wickets ensured that Ireland was always in the game, as the bowlers shared the top-order spoils. The Irish exhibited a certain hunger to win, with some excellent catching and ground fielding to build sustained pressure on the West Indies.

It was all going according to the plan until the 18th over, with the equation reading “43 to win off 18”. A struggling Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford manifested the full extent of their wrath on Andrew McCarthy in a violent over that read – 6.6.1.4.6.4 – creaming 27 runs off the over and turning the match around for the West Indies. The equation now read: 16 to win off 12.

It was then, however, that Craig Young turned up with a penultimate over for the ages, conceding just three runs and picking up the wicket of the dangerous Pooran, leaving Joshua Little to defend 13 off the last over.

Little picked up Rutherford off the first ball but was brought right back down to earth, courtesy a first-ball six by Bravo. However, he held his nerve to snaffle Bravo’s wicket and bowl a dot ball to Walsh with four to win off the final ball, to hand Ireland a nail-biting four-run win.

Brief Scores: Ireland 208-7in 20 overs (Paul Stirling 95, Kevin O’Brien 48; Dwayne Bravo 2-28) beat West Indies 204-7 in 20 overs (Evin Lewis 53, Kieron Pollard 31; Joshua Little 3-29, Craig Young 2-31) by 4 runs.

Archer set to be elbowed out by Wood as England swear by injury management

0

When it comes to international cricket, Jofra Archer has been a young man in a hurry. Since he made his England debut at the start of last summer, he has won a World Cup and made an immediate impression on Test cricket during the Ashes series. Thanks to his pace and his skill, almost overnight he has become one of England’s most important players in all formats. But with that rise has come greater expectations. And when those expectations have not been met, criticism has followed.

Archer’s difficult tour to New Zealand, when he took just two wickets for the cost of 209 runs across two Tests, was the first real-time that things had not gone all his own way in an England shirt. There was particular criticism of his pace, which was down at times on the 90mph thunderbolts he had consistently served up against Australia, but little recognition that both Test matches in New Zealand were played on pitches as flat as pancakes. This was also Archer’s first experience with the red Kookaburra ball and his first Tests away from home.

Nevertheless, for a bowler who was supposed to provide England with a cutting edge on flat pitches, it wasn’t quite the start to life as an overseas Test bowler either Joe Root or Archer had in mind. Things started better on this tour of South Africa, however, with a five-wicket haul in South Africa’s second innings at Centurion and a return to somewhere near his menacing best. But then a longstanding elbow injury struck, ruling Archer out of England’s victory at Newlands.

It remains unclear whether Archer has fully recovered from the injury ahead of the third Test in Port Elizabeth which begins on Thursday (January 16). There were reports from training on Wednesday that he didn’t look all that comfortable when bowling in the nets and Root suggested that Archer would not be risked if not fully fit.

But there are also indications that England may be considering selecting Mark Wood to replace the injured James Anderson in the final eleven even if Archer is deemed available for selection. If so, it would be the first time he has been dropped by England.

“He’s 24 years old. It’s clear to see what he’s capable of doing and he’s very much at the start. Managing workloads is a very important part of it as well. He’s played a huge amount of cricket since he’s come into the international arena and we’ve seen a little bit of pushback from his body, with the elbow injury.

While Archer’s selection or otherwise for the third Test will depend on whether he is fully fit, Root also acknowledged that England needs to manage the expectation around him, particularly given the limited Test, and indeed red-ball, the experience he has.

Should Wood be selected, it would be his first game since the third Test in Saint Lucia on the tour of the Caribbean last winter. Then, he blitzed West Indies during their first innings, picking up five-wickets in one of the quickest spells an England bowler has ever produced. It proved the catalyst for a comprehensive victory and hinted at the destruction Wood can wreak when fully fit. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to back that performance up in Test cricket since. An injury sustained during the World Cup final has ruled him out of the game until now.

He could well be rusty. He has not played a competitive match since the World Cup final and although he has been bowling quickly in the nets, it would be a risk to throw him into a Test with such limited matchplay behind him. Root confirmed, however, that it might be a risk England is willing to take.

Whomever England select, they will go into the third Test with plenty of confidence following an excellent display at Newlands. That it was achieved with five players under the age of 24 pleased Root even more.

Facebook Tipped to Launch TikTok-Competitor Lasso in India This Year

0

Facebook introduced its short-form video app, Lasso, last year, in a bid to take on TikTok. The app was launched in the US only back then, but Facebook reportedly plans to launch it in India this year. It will most likely debut in the first financial quarter of next year or by May 2020. Furthermore, WhatsApp was spotted working on Lasso integration as well, hinting at big plans from Facebook’s end regarding the short-form video app. Facebook will face tough competition from TikTok whenever it decides to launch in India, as the latter is extremely popular among users in the country.

A new report on EnTrackr suggests that Lasso will be introduced in the Indian market this year, and Facebook looks to leave no stones unturned to give tough competition to TikTok. The social media giant reportedly looks to launch the Lasso app by May this year.

Furthermore, a second source says that Facebook is aware that it will have to fight TikTok fiercely in the Indian market, and it won’t leave any stone unturned to up its game. TikTok has been eating up a decent market share of Facebook in India, and the social media giant is gearing up for battle. The company is working on an aggressive strategy to bring creators on board and lure influencers to switch from TikTok to Lasso. “Lasso is looking at onboarding influencers and celebrities by promising a minimum guarantee which is higher in amount when compared to what TikTok offers them right now,” the source said.

To reiterate, the Lasso app was launched in the US last year, and since its inception, it has been downloaded more than a million times on Google Play Store. Apart from India, Facebook reportedly looks to launch Lasso in other emerging markets like Indonesia as well.

Separately, reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong has tweeted that WhatsApp is working on Lasso integration as well. She has shared screenshots of a Lasso link working on WhatsApp in PiP mode, hinting that the feature in development. There is no word on when the feature will roll out as of yet. But this hints that Lasso is being given serious thoughts by Facebook, and is far from giving up on it. When Snapchat started gaining popularity due to its disappearing content novelty, Facebook launched a similar feature on Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger to keep itself relevant. With Lasso, Facebook is trying to topple TikTok off the shelf. Will it succeed? Only time will tell.

Hardik Pandya to included in the Squad For New Zealand Tour On Sunday

0

All-rounder Hardik Pandya could be the only notable inclusion in India’s limited-overs squads which are unlikely to be significantly tinkered with — for the upcoming six-week tour of New Zealand. Starting January 24, India will be playing five T20 Internationals, three ODIs and two Test matches, and squads for the tour will be picked on Sunday. India will be playing eight white-ball games in New Zealand, and it will be interesting to see if the selectors pick a 16 or 17-member squad, instead of 15.

With the India A team’s shadow tour coinciding with the seniors’ visit, it gives the selectors an option to draft players on SOS basis if the need arises.

The selectors will primarily focus on zeroing in on the core for white-ball cricket considering that this is a T20 World Cup year.

While the T20 squad that played against Sri Lanka in the just-concluded series all but picks itself, Pandya, who is already in New Zealand with the A team, is expected to be included once he proves his fitness in the first couple of List A games against New Zealand, apart from two warm-up one-dayers.

With India A’s three List A games only ending on January 26, Hardik, returning from back surgery, might be included by the time the January 29 third T20 International comes calling.

It will be interesting to note if the ODI team is an extension of the T20 squad.

The weakest link in the ODI team is Kedar Jadhav, who has managed to hold onto his 50 over slot amid pressure to replace him.

In New Zealand, Jadhav’s technical frailties could be exposed and his lack of overs in recent times makes him a case for exclusion.

In case the Indian team looks for technical solidity, Ajinkya Rahane could make a comeback, but if the team management is thinking in terms of treating 50 over games as an extension of T20 series, Mumbai player Suryakumar Yadav’s explosive power hitting at No. 5 or 6 could be an option. Both Surya and Sanju Samson are in the A squad.

The Test squad wears a very settled look with the only contention being the third opener’s slot.

Picked as a reserve for the home series, the young Shubman Gill deserves to be the third opener, but KL Rahul’s current form and experience in Test cricket could also be considered.

The selectors will also deliberate on if a third spinner (Kuldeep Yadav) is needed for the two-match Test series instead of a fifth pacer (Navdeep Saini) to accompany Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma.

The rest automatically pick themselves in case there are no fitness issues.

The BCCI revisited Rahul Dravid’s most memorable ODI knock where he along with Sachin Tendulkar smashed the New Zealand bowling attack to all parts of Hyderabad as India amassed a mammoth 376 for two.

Dravid was dismissed for 153 — his highest ODI score and the only 150-plus score in the 50-over format — while Sachin Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 186. The duo put on a 331-run partnership for the second wicket after Sourav Ganguly was run out in the second over.

New Zealand was bowled out for a paltry 202 in 33.1 overs as India registered a massive 174-run win.

Dravid’s middle-order partner VVS Laxman posted a picture of the duo to wish his “good friend” while another teammate Harbhajan Singh dubbed him a “legend”.

Dravid is regarded as one of India’s most successful batsmen, especially in the Test arena.

The right-hander played 164 Tests, scoring 13,288 at an average of 52.31 with 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries to his name. He also took 210 catches in the longest format of the game and is regarded as one of the best slip fielders ever.

Dravid also made 344 appearances for India in ODIs, scoring 10,889 runs at an average of 39.16 with 12 hundred and 83 fifties. He took 196 catches and affected 14 stumpings. The former India captain also played one T20I.

BCB awaits Mortaza’s decision on retirement plans

As Bangladesh gear up to host Zimbabwe in February, the focus is back once again on Mashrafe Mortaza’s impending retirement. The fast bowler was expected to call time on his career after the 2019 World Cup but decided against making any such decision.

Even before going to England for the World Cup, Mortaza’s retirement post the campaign was anticipated. The expectation grew manifold following his below-par returns in the tournament – where he picked up just one wicket in eight matches. Once he decided not to retire, he was expected to feature for one last time when Bangladesh toured Sri Lanka for an ODI series – and perhaps bow out at the end of it – but a last-minute injury kept him on the sidelines.

There then seemed to be a sense of urgency from within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to have Mortaza says his goodbyes and bring down the curtains on his successful career, as they attempted to schedule an ODI series against Zimbabwe when they were in the country for a T20 tri-series, also involving Afghanistan, last September.

BCB failed to organize this series – that was intended as Mortaza’s farewell, bringing the situation back to square one. The murmurs of the ODI captain’s retirement resurfaced after the board rescheduled their home series against Zimbabwe to February instead of March. Changes were made to the format that will be played as well – Zimbabwe will now play three ODIs and two T20Is along with a Test match, instead of the initially planned schedule of one Test and five T20Is.

Mortaza, who returned to action from his injury in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League, revealed that he has still not given retirement serious thought and that he is open to listening to what the board has to offer him in the form of a farewell series.

Mortaza also opened up on his poor World Cup campaign and reckoned he would’ve been dropped straight away if it was any other player. The ODI captain also maintained that if an opportunity still came his way, he’d gladly accept it.

Even as the Bangladesh board prepares to host what is essentially viewed as his farewell series, Mortaza has distanced himself from any such thoughts and said that he doesn’t need to be prioritized.

Another decision that is yet to be made by BCB is regarding their national contracted player’s list for 2020, which needs to be announced on January 12 after the scheduled board meeting. Bangladesh has nine ODIs in the pipeline this year, and need to figure out whether Mortaza can feature in any plans going forward.

BCB cricket operation chairman Akram Khan told a news agency that they are yet to finalize the national contract but insisted that the current ODI skipper’s renewal depends completely on him.
