Ottis Gibson waiting to hear from BCB about bowling coach role

0

Ottis Gibson is still waiting to hear from Bangladesh Cricket Board about the possibility of being appointed as the pace bowling coach of the men’s national team. The former South Africa head coach had stated that he was in discussions with the BCB over the role left vacant after the board decided to release Charl Langeveldt to join the South African national set-up as per Cricket South Africa’s request.

Gibson has just completed a stint as the head coach of Cumilla Warriors in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League where his team failed to progress past the group stage. BCB directors are scheduled to convene at a board meeting on January 12 where a decision on Langeveldt’s replacement is likely to be taken up. Former South Africa fast bowler and current bowling coach of Sylhet Thunder Nantie Hayward is another applicant for the post.

Bangladesh is eager to make a swift appointment to their back-room staff ahead of a hectic season of cricket which sees them playing 10 Test matches apart from the T20 World Cup. Fast bowling has been a particular pain point of the national team with the team going even as far as playing four spinners in a Test against Afghanistan last year. Bangladesh’s stocks in the fast-bowling department were laid bare once more in the T20I series against India, where despite the lead they floundered in the next couple of games to concede a series that could have been won.

Gibson said that in T20 cricket bowlers will have to accept that they will be hit but will have to back themselves to bowl their best ball irrespective of what transpired the previous delivery. “Bowlers are always under pressure. Yeah mentally, you have to accept that you are gonna get hit for fours and six but then how you make a comeback is the main thing,” Gibson told a news agency of his mantra to T20 bowling.

Dhawan Returns to Form as India seal series 2-0 against Sri Lanka

0

India sealed a clinical 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka as they beat the visitors by 78 runs in Pune on Friday (January 10). Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul struck half-centuries but a late cameo from Manish Pandey and Shardul Thakur helped India post 201 for 6. Sri Lanka lost early wickets and eventually huffed and puffed their way to 123.

With Rahul scoring runs at will, the pressure was mounting on Dhawan to get the score on the board. After a scratchy start, Dhawan outscored Rahul at one stage and had a better strike rate as well. He took on Lasith Malinga in the fifth over and then Lahiru Kumara in the sixth over to get going. His first – and only – six came against Wanindu Hasaranga as he got to a half-century after 15 innings. Things, however, could have been a lot different had he not been dropped in the second over. Dhawan had flicked an Angelo Mathews delivery to deep square leg but Dasun Shanaka failed to hold on.

With Samson replacing Rishabh Pant for this game, it was crucial he got some time in the middle. As it turned out, he was sent at the fall of Dhawan after the openers had smashed 97 for the first wicket. Samson hit his first ball for a six and then was out lbw on the next one.

Manish Pandey walked in at No. 4 and remained unbeaten to lift the side over 200. Iyer too failed to make an impact and fell to Sandakan after striking his first ball for a four. Kohli, batting at No. 6 only the second time in his career, struck some glorious shots but was run out after a 17-ball 26.

India scored 59 in the last four overs out of which 22 were hit by Thakur off just eight balls. He walked in at 164 for 6 in the 18th over. He struck Lasith Malinga for a six on the second hall he faced and then hit Kumara for a six and a boundary in the final over. Pandey made 31 off 18 as the duo made 37 off 14 balls to bat Sri Lanka out of the contest.

Sri Lanka got off to a worst possible start as slipped to 15 for 3 first and then 26 for 4. Jasprit Bumrah’s pacy short delivery nipped out Danushka Gunathilaka while Avishka Fernando played an uppish drive to cover. Oshada Fernando was run out after some horrible calling from Kusal Perera and the latter then lost his stumps – missing a quick yorker by Navdeep Saini. Even before the powerplay was over, Sri Lanka were staring at defeat. Dhananjaya de Silva got a half-century but fought a lone battle against the might of Indian bowling.

Brief scores: India 201/6 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 54, Shikhar Dhawan 52; Lakshan Sandakan 3-35) beat Sri Lanka 123 in 15.5 overs (Dhananjaya de Silva 57; Navdeep Saini 3-28) by 78 runs.

South Africa announce unchanged Test squad for 3rd and 4th Test

0
South Africa have retained the same squad that lost by 189 runs to England in Cape Town for the remainder of the four-match series. However, only the starting XI from that match along with Dane Paterson will initially head to Port Elizabeth, the venue for the next Test, with the rest of the members fulfilling domestic duties.
South Africa had won the first Test in Centurion before the Newlands reversal, losing Aiden Markram to injury between those Tests, with Pieter Malan slotting in as the replacement and doing well on debut.
The series is now locked at 1-1 with the next Test starting from January 16, which overlaps with the final day of the next round in their domestic four-day competition, making it very likely that the hosts will go in with the same team barring injury.
South Africa Test squad: Faf du Plessis (c), Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Rassie van der Dussen, Pieter Malan, Zubayr Hamza, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Vernon Philander, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma, Andile Phehlukwayo, Beuran Hendricks, Rudi Second.

Sub-inspector P Sudheer Reddy and his senior had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a businessman to release him on what is called a “station bail”. On a complaint, the Anti-Corruption Bureau laid a trap and caught the cop accepting the bribe inside the businessman’s car at the police station in the posh neighborhood of Jubilee Hills.

“At Jubilee Hills, we have caught Sudheer Reddy red-handed while accepting the bribe amount and two liquor bottles,” senior police officer Achcheshwara Rao, DSP of the Anti-Corruption Bureau said.

The arrested policeman’s senior Balavantaiah, with whom he spoke to on the phone before accepting the bribe, has reportedly escaped and the police are looking for him. The two cops had negotiated with the businessman and agreed to accept Rs 50,000.

Warne’s baggy green raises over AUD 1m for bushfire relief

0

Legendary spinner Shane Warne has raised more than a million dollars for Bushfire Disaster Relief by auctioning off his ‘Baggy Green’ Australia Test cap.

According to the auction house’s website, the winning bid of AUD 1,007,500 was made by a certain ‘M.C from Sydney’ who pipped ‘W.C for Gordon’ in the final stages of the auction on Friday (January 10). The auction had to be extended by a few minutes because of a flurry of late bids.

The winning bid for the Warne memorabilia is more than double the price (AUD 425,000) commanded by Don Bradman’s baggy green in 2003. All proceeds from the auction will go towards bushfire relief and rescue operations that have ravaged the eastern coast of Australia since September leading to tragic losses of life.

The baggy green is given to an Australian cricketer when he makes his Test debut. One of Wisden’s five cricketers of the last century, Warne played 145 Tests in a glittering career and finished with 708 wickets – second only to Muttiah Muralitharan’s tally of 800.

Hayden Walsh helps WI survive Irish scare in series-clinching win

0

Hayden Walsh’s late rescue act after a 64-run fifth-wicket stand between captain Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran helped West Indies avoid a stunning defeat to Ireland at home, as they chased down their target of 238 with just one wicket and one ball to spare take an unassailable 2-0 lead. The visitors were led ably by opener Paul Stirling in the first half of the game – when he scored a 79-ball 63 – before a combined bowling effort nearly downed the hosts in Barbados.

Off-spinner Simi Singh struck timely blows – taking out opening Shai Hope and then half-centurion Nicholas Pooran – while Mark Adair brought his team back into the game with Alzarri Joseph’s wicket. There was plenty of drama – and opportunity for Ireland to seal a famous victory – but two missed run-out chances saw West Indies somehow scrape through.

The West Indies wobble in the chase was down to a top-order collapse, that saw Evin Lewis (7), Shimron Hetmyer (6) and Brandon King (0) all return for single-digit scores before the revival from Pooran and Pollard began. With the asking rate not too high, it appeared like the duo would take West Indies through, until Simi Singh cleaned up Pooran with a lovely delivery that deceived the half-centurion in the air, lured him to press forward and beat the outside edge of his bat to crash onto the stumps. This came right after the players were briefly forced off the field due to showers – at which point West Indies were already ahead of the DLS par score. The intermission – however brief – seemed to have disrupted the concentration of both the set batters as they fell in successive overs.

Barry McCarthy came back into the attack and pouched a return catch off a leading edge from Kieron Pollard to end the captain’s stay on 40 off 32. Simi swung into action again in just the next over, albeit with an innocuous long hop that Romario Shepherd pulled towards midwicket where Stirling took a sharp catch. The quick downward slide left West Indies on 148 for 7, and vulnerable to a lower-order collapse.

The rain came once again, and this time Ireland was ahead on DLS thanks to the flurry of wickets. But this time too it didn’t keep the players off the field for too long. When play resumed, Hayden Walsh took it upon himself to drag his team towards a labored victory. Kharry Pierre pulled in the same direction as Walsh for a crucial 52-run partnership. But Ireland clawed back with Pierre’s dismissal in the 39th over, when he nicked an Andy McBrine full toss to Stirling at first slip.

At the 40 over the mark, the game was still on an even keel. West Indies needed just 37 of the last 60 balls, but Ireland’s chances were as bright, as they needed just two more wickets to pull off a win for the ages. Walsh, in the company of Alzarri Joseph, brought the equation down to 16 off 24 balls. Joseph even took charge in the 48th over, smashing two successive fours off Adair. But Adair fought back with a back-of-the-hand slower ball to dismiss Joseph in the same over, taking the game into the last over where West Indies needed 5 off 6.

There was more pandemonium in-store when Cottrell and Walsh offered Ireland two run-out opportunities to seal the game with their running uncertainties, but Ireland ended up squandering both chances. First, Adair knocked the stumps off at the non-striker’s end without having the ball in his hand when Cottrell was short of his crease, and then a throw from long-off went to the wrong end which denied them the 10th wicket. To add to the woes, Cottrell then finished the game with a big six off the fourth ball.

Ireland could’ve had the chance to defend a much bigger total had any of their top-order batsmen accompanied Stirling for a little longer. The best partnership at the top of the order came between Stirling and William Porterfield – 59 runs for the third wicket, but once this was breached Ireland lost wickets in a heap. Kevin O’Brien and Simi Singh attempted to revive the innings and push for a strong finish but Joseph and Cottrell – who had big roles to play in the tense chase – made their presence felt from the very beginning of the game. They picked seven wickets between them as Ireland went from 135 for 4 to 224 for 9, eventually finishing with 237 – with only 45 runs coming in the last 10 overs.

Brief Scores: Ireland 237/9 (Paul Stirling 63, Simi Singh 34; Alzarri Joseph 4-32, Sheldon Cottrell 3-51) lost to West Indies 242/9 in 49.5 overs (Nicholas Pooran 52, Hayden Walsh 46*; Simi Singh 3-48) by 1 wicket

Jos Buttler fined after spat against Vernon Philander

0

Jos Buttler has been fined 15 percent of his match fees and also received one demerit point for “use of an audible obscenity during an International Match”, the International Cricket Council announced on Thursday (January 9). On the final day, Buttler used obscene language against Vernon Philander after collecting a throw.

England went on to win the contest by 189 runs but not before some stern resistance from the hosts in Cape Town.

The throw came in from Joe Root at mid-off and almost hit Philander before being collect by Buttler. The ‘keeper, annoyed with the batsman not moving, was heard calling Philander a “f***ing knobhead”.

Before England’s win, South Africa had won the Boxing Day Test to take a 1-0 lead. With the series now tied at 1-1, the two teams will meet in Port Elizabeth from January 16 for the third Test of the four-match series. The visitors have already been dealt with another unkind cut with James Anderson ruled out of the series with a rib injury.

Five-Year-Old Suffering From Brain Cancer Does ‘Bat Flip’ In BBL Match

0

A five-year-old child suffering from brain cancer on Thursday had a dream come true as he assisted in the ‘bat flip’ during the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) contest between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes. The kid, named Slater Walker, is reportedly a die-hard fan of the Brisbane-based franchise, who had called him to the ground as a guest of honor.

https://twitter.com/BBL/status/1215174988749164545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1215174988749164545&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.ndtv.com%2Fcricket%2Ffive-year-old-suffering-from-brain-cancer-does-bat-flip-in-bbl-match-watch-2161348

In the BBL, normal coin toss, which is widely used in cricket matches across the globe, has been replaced by the bat flip where the away team captain calls ‘hills’ or ‘roofs’ to take their call in the match. The only condition is that the bat must complete one full rotation before landing.

It was first tried during the 2018 edition of the BBL and it has been followed since then.

In the ongoing match, the Hurricanes had won the toss and opted to bat against the hosts. The visitors scored 126/9 from their 20 overs and Brisbane Heat was 88/5 at the time of writing.

Realme TV May Launch in 2020 to Counter Xiaomi’s Mi TV Range: Report

0

Realme TV could become a reality in 2020, Realme Chief Marketing Officer Xu Qi Chase reportedly hinted while speaking with the media following the launch of the Realme X50 5G in Beijing, China. The company is reportedly exploring various possibilities to enter the TV market with its smart TVs. This would make the competition tougher for its home-grown rival Xiaomi that has its Mi TV range, which already dominates the smart TV market in India. Realme TV launch is likely to happen sometime alongside the company’s venturing into the market of connected devices.

CMO Xu Qi Chase at the sidelines of the Realme X50 5G launch in China revealed that Realme will launch its TV category in 2020, reports ITHome. Initially, the Shenzhen-based company was speculated to launch its first smart TV before the end of 2019. It didn’t make an official announcement, though.

The first Realme TV model is likely to have many similarities over what has been offered by Xiaomi through its Mi TV range, especially considering the historical records of the Oppo spin-off company that already giving a tough fight to its Chinese counterpart with various affordable smartphones. We can also safely expect the presence of Android TV to deliver a full-fledged smart TV experience along with wide-enough app support.

Alongside its plans for the smart TV market, Realme is aiming to bring its offerings in the Internet of Things (IoT) space and bring a range of connected devices. Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth while speaking with Gadgets 360 in November specified the plans for bringing new connected devices.

Realme late last year launched the Realme Buds Air as its answer to Apple AirPods. Further, Sheth earlier on Thursday hinted at the launch of a fitness band that could debut as the Realme Fitness Band to take on Xiaomi’s Mi Band family.

Founded in May 2018, Realme has made a predominance in the smartphone market with its range of affordable smartphones. The company last year, however, brought the Realme X2 Pro to go beyond the market of budget phones and take on the likes of OnePlus and Samsung that have a strong presence in the higher mid-range and premium smartphone segments.

Rupee strengthens 22 paise as US, Iran seek to defuse crisis

0

The Indian rupee advanced 22 paise to 71.48 per US dollar in opening trade on Thursday as global markets stabilized after the US and Iran toned down their war rhetoric. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened strong at 71.44 against the greenback. The domestic unit had settled at 71.70 per dollar on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said Washington did not necessarily have to respond to Iranian attacks at American military bases in Iraq. The comments came after Iran fired rockets at US facilities in Iraq in response to the killing of its top general Qassem Soleimani. Reports said there were no US or Iraqi casualties from the Iranian strikes, amid speculation that Tehran may have deliberately pulled its punches to avoid a wider conflagration.

Taking cues from the easing tensions, Asian stocks darted up in opening trade while oil markets recovered from supply disruption fears. Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures was trading 0.64 percent up at USD 65.86 per barrel. Domestic equity benchmarks too participated in the relief rally. The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 449.56 points or 1.10 percent higher at 41,267.30 and the broader NSE Nifty surged 134.05 points or 1.11 percent to 12,159.40. Foreign funds sold shares worth a net Rs 515.85 crore on Wednesday, provisional data showed. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.03 percent lower at 97.27.
