Chidambaram to Stay in Tihar Jail as Delhi Court Dismisses His Plea

ED had told the court that since Chidambaram was already in the legal custody in the CBI case, he was not in a situation to interfere with the proof. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, had said that ED had come to the Congress leader’s house to arrest him on August 20 and 21 but now they do not want to do so just to ensure that he remains in court supervision.

Mehta had argued that firm aspects were necessary to be probed before his custodial examination. The organization requires to interrogate 6 persons before his custodial examination and it was investigating money laundering which reaches beyond this country, he had said.

He had contended that the accused cannot lead the investigation and the order to take him in custody right now will curtail the prudence of probe organization. earlier on August 21, the ‘reasons to believe’ that he was necessary to be in prison existed and it exists even today, Mehta had said, adding that after arresting Chidambaram they would like to tackle him with the proof which has been gathered.

On the 5th of September, Chidambaram was remanded to 14-day judicial custody in the corruption case by the CBI till September 19.

Govt slashes 312 Indian-origin Sikhs from adverse list

A ostracize of Sikh overseas nationals who have been banned from traveling to India for a decade has been condensed from 314 to just 2, a senior home ministry official said on Friday.

The 312 nationals detached from the blacklist, officially called the Central Adverse List, will be “qualified to get Indian visa and the Overseas Indian Card” in due course, the official stated.

The decision to carve down the list was taken after a “review” of pressure posed by these people to India.

Govt slashes 312 Indian-origin Sikhs from adverse list

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was first to have granted to review the list at a meeting with UK-based Sikhs during a visit to the UK in 2015 and National Security consultant Ajit Doval to lead the exercise within the security enterprise.

Over the next four years, officials said the list had been increasingly trimmed but there had been calls to do away with the list that, Sikh groups say, had come to represent “the relationship between Sikh living overseas and Indians the 1984 Operation Bluestar”.

These ostracized Sikhs have been mostly living in the US and Canada in North America; and the UK, France, and Germany. It has included Sikh society leaders who promoted the cause of Khalistan, former militants, those associated with the philosophy without an illegal record, and those who sought political refuge challenging the threat to their lives from the Indian officials.

“This review is an incessant and active process and is a part of a standard exercise. Such a review will afford an occasion to such Sikh overseas nationals to visit India, meet their family members and reconnect to their roots, ” the official stated.
During the 1980s – when the militant association for a divided Sikh native soil was at its peak – many Sikh Indian nationals and overseas nationals belonging to Sikh society fell to anti-India misinformation.

Some of them even fled India to get away from Indian authorities, became overseas nationals and took refuge outside India. They were placed in the adverse list till 2016, making them disqualified to gain visa services to visit India, ” the official mentioned.

These people will also be qualified to apply for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder after they have held normal visas for at least two years.

BJP looks for new leader in Telangana

The two-year term of the BJP’s current Telangana president, K. Laxman, will end in the next few months

Among the names that are doing rounds as possible replacement for Laxman are BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, DK Aruna, and Nizamabad MP D Arvind

Hyderabad: In its bid to become the only alternative to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking for a new face to lead the party in the state.

With internal elections set to be held in December, senior BJP leaders said a section of people within the party feel they need a new leader or state president to challenge TRS supremo and chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR), who is a popular and well-recognized leader.

The two-year term of BJP’s current Telangana president K. Laxman will end in the next few months, after which the party’s organizational polls will be held, said a BJP leader who did not want to be quoted.

BJP looks for new leader in Telangana

Laxman has been with the saffron party right from the beginning of his political career. He was unable to retain the Musheerabad assembly seat in the 2018 state polls, during which the BJP won just one constituency out of the total 119. However, he was lauded during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when the BJP won four seats in Telangana out of the total 17, including the prestigious Nizamabad constituency. The seat, previously held by K. Kavitha, KCR’s daughter, was won by BJP’s D. Arvind.

Some party leaders feel that we need a new face, especially to challenge someone like KCR, but another group feels that we should continue with Dr. Laxman as he now has a good grip on party affairs, and got us four seats in the Lok Sabha polls,” the BJP leader said.

In Telangana, the BJP is looking to push the Congress aside and emerge as an alternative to the ruling TRS, which has 103 MLAs, out of the total 119. The TRS won 88 seats in the 2018 polls, and later this year 12 Congress MLAs (out of 19) defected to the ruling parties along with three other opposition MLAs.

The TRS, which expected to win most of the 17 MP seats in the 2019 parliamentary polls, was reduced to 9, as the Congress won in three seats.

However, just before the Lok Sabha elections and after it as well, a handful of senior leaders from the Congress like former cabinet minister D. K. Aruna quit the Congress and joined the BJP.

Besides, several local leaders and cadre from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which has weakened in the state since bifurcation in 2014, also lost many of its leaders to the BJP recently.

Among the names that are doing the rounds as possible replacement for Laxman are BJP MLC N. Ramchander Rao, D. K. Aruna, and Nizamabad MP D. Arvind. “It is unlikely that an outsider like Aruna will be given charge, and Arvind is a first-time MP. So we will have to wait and see,” said BJP leader, who added that the party sees great prospects in the state from a national perspective.
