Supreme Court asks for 1,581 cases which are on MPs and MLAs
The Apex court has directed the Central Government to furnish the details of 1,581 cases that were mentioned at the time filing their nominations for 2014 Parliamentary and Assembly elections. The Supreme Court also ordered the Center to come with the list of cases that have been disposed of a year from filing and number of cases that have ended in either acquittal or conviction of the accused.
A bench comprising of Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha asked for details pertaining to all the cases filed against politicians from 2014 to till date.
The Center responded stating that the government is working with the Election Commission of India to create a policy that restricts criminally acquitted politicians from entering into politics for a lifetime.
‘The decriminalization of the politics has to be done. For the speedy disposal of cases against MPs and MLAs, special courts have to be set up’, said a government official.
An advocate has filed a petition against the Representation of People (RP) Act, which banned the politicians from entering into politics for 6 years after serving a jail term. The petition also seeking the center to introduce minimum educational qualification and maximum age for contesting in election polls.
