NASA claims Chandrayaan’s Vikram Had “Hard Landing”

The Chandrayaan 2 lander had a “hard landing” when it lost contact with the ground station during a historic attempt to soft-land on the lunar surface, NASA said today, adding that a team of scientists at the US space agency has not been able to locate it.

“The Chandrayaan-2 lander, Vikram, attempted a landing Sept. 7 (Sept. 6 in the United States), on a small patch of lunar highland smooth plains between Simpelius N and Manzinus C craters. Vikram had a hard landing and the precise location of the spacecraft in the lunar highlands has yet to be determined,” NASA said in a statement and released pictures of the targeted landing site, labeling the craters.

The pictures were captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft during its flyby on September 17. The images were taken at dusk, and the team was not able to locate the lander, the US space agency said.

The Chandrayaan 2 lander may be hiding in a shadow, it added. “The scene above was captured from a Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Quickmap fly-around of the targeted landing site image width is about 150 kilometers across the center…so far the LROC team has not been able to locate or image the lander. It was dusk when the landing area was imaged and thus large shadows covered much of the terrain; the Vikram lander may be hiding in a shadow,” the statement said.

The moon orbiter will try to “locate and image the lander” again in October when lighting will be favorable, NASA said.

The deadline to contact Vikram, which had a 14-day mission life, ended on Saturday last as lunar night began to fall in the south polar region of the moon where the lander was attempting a descent.

On Thursday, ISRO chief K Sivan said a national-level commission is investigating “what went wrong with the lander”. “We have got no sign from the lander. A national-level council is now investigating what went wrong with the lander. Maybe after the committees presents the report, we’ll work on the plan. Required approvals and other processes are required. We are operating on that,” Mr Sivan briefed ANI.

“Our upcoming preference is Gaganyaan mission,” the top space scientist in the nation replied.

India had anticipated to make space history with the Rs. 1,000-crore Chandrayaan 2 mission.

The Delhi government is planning to change the office working hours in the city as one of the precautions to the reduction of congestion and air pollution.

Google also mentions that Android 10 (Go Edition) employs Adiantum, a new encryption format that has been tailor-made for entry-level devices to secure their data without affecting device performance. To recall, Adiantum was introduced as a special encryption method for entry-level smartphones earlier this year. It was designed to make storage encryption more efficient for devices without cryptographic acceleration, which means it does not require special hardware and as a result, won’t create a stress on the silicon inside phones running Android 10 (Go Edition). The arrival of Adiantum, Google claims, brings Android 10 (Go Edition) on par with the standard Android operating system when it comes to data security.

As mentioned above, the Android 10-based version of Android (Go Edition) will arrive in the fall. Google also touted some of Android Go Edition’s unique features and apps such as read-out-loud for listening to long-form text content, Lens in Google Go app, YouTube Go, and Gallery Go as some of the solutions that further enhance the Android experience on entry-level phones in meaningful ways. 12 dead after heavy rains in Pune; schools and colleges shut

Twelve people have died in rain-associated incidents in Pune after a strangely heavy shower lashed the region since late Wednesday night. The downpour congested in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Police and district management has so far declared 12 deaths -seven from Pune city and five from adjacent villages. Exploring is on for four missing persons.

Two of the five people who died in the wall crumple incident were recognized as Rohit Bharat Amle, 13, and Santosh Kadam, 55. The three other wounded include two women and a 9-year-old boy.

Hyderabad: The State government has extended the license for liquor shops for one month up to October 31 by laying down certain conditions.

A G O Ms No 108 was issued in this regard. The current license term will expire by this month-end. As per conditions, the shopkeepers must pay a proportionate annual retail shop excise tax for one month period.

The G O also mentioned about the collection of retail shop excise turnover tax at the rate of eight per cent plus applicable VAT thereon from all the licenses on purchases made from October 1 to 31, both days included. Other conditions prescribed in rules for shops would also be applicable. The Prohibition and Excise Commissioner will take necessary action in the matter accordingly.

Instructions have been issued to officials concerned to collect proportionate one-month shop excise tax of 2,215 liquor shops immediately without fail and submit compliance undersigned.

According to reports, 23-year-old Adam Mark Jordan who was staying at Manikanta Men’s hostel in Serilingampally was electrocuted while returning from the gym around 11.30 pm on Tuesday.

According to the police report, Adam stepped on an iron rod, which was in contact with a live wire, as he reached the gate of his hostel. Adam reportedly died on the spot.

The Madhapur Sub-Inspector told Times of India, “The incessant rains led to water-logging around his hostel. When he reached the hostel gate on his cycle, Jordan put his foot down and touched an iron rod and got electrocuted. We suspect that an electric wire had snapped after the builder at a nearby construction site trimmed the tree branches.”

Police have registered a case of 304-A (Causing death by negligence) and are investigating the case.

Adam’s body was taken to Osmania hospital and a post-mortem was conducted.

In another tragic incident, a 43-year-old priest identified as B Premkumar Shastry drowned in a nala and died. The incident took place in Chaitanyapuri.

According to Times of India, Shastry along with his friend Ramakrishna Sharma had gone to Chaitanyapuri for some work. The duo had parked their vehicle at Peddamberpet. “Around 11.40 pm, while going back to Peddamberpet from Chaitanyapuri, the two accidentally slipped and fell into a nala. While Ramakrishna managed to escape unscathed, Shastry did not,” Ashok Reddy, inspector at LB Nagar police station, told Times of India.

Shastry’s body was recovered around 3 am, 100 metres away the accident site, according to the report. Police suspect that both Shastry and Sharam were in an inebriated state, according to reports.

On Tuesday, Telangana received heavy rainfall in isolated places. While Hyderabad recorded 76 mm of rainfall, Tirumalagiri in the city received a near record-breaking 132 mm of rainfall.

Arora, however, admitted that key pieces of evidence against Chinmayanand in the sexual abuse case were missing – for instance, the pair of spectacles with hidden camera worn by the woman have not been recovered by the SIT yet and the state forensic science laboratory could not recover data deleted by Chinmayanand on his mobile phone.

The SIT recorded the statements of the woman’s friends – Sanjay Singh, Sachin Sengar and Vikram alias Durgesh – after taking them into custody on Tuesday and planned to confront the woman with the trio. The SIT is also trying to trace the mobile phones of Singh and Sengar from which extortion messages were allegedly sent.

Days after the death of Mounika at Hyderabad’s Ameerpet Metro Station, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on Tuesday initiated a probe into the incident. The 24-year-old had died earlier this week, after a chunk of mortar from the station got dislodged and fell on her.

JK Garg from the CMRS, who reports to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, conducted a preliminary inspection at the accident site along with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director N V S Reddy and other senior officials.

Officials also said that a public hearing will be held by CMRS at the Metro Rail Bhavan in Hyderabad on October 3.

Mounika was taking shelter from the rain at the pedestrian zone under the metro station when the tragedy occurred. Her death has left her family in shock.

OnePlus 7T users won’t need to wait for the update after the launch and hence, they won’t need to wait for any download. This would eventually make the OnePlus 7T the first smartphone to launch with Android 10 this year, ahead of the Google Pixel 4 scheduled to launch globally in October. OnePlus hasn’t detailed any specific feature that users can expect with the new version of Android on the OnePlus 7T. However, we expect a few new additions to Oxygen OS, as has been the norm with every major Android OS update for OnePlus phones every year.

There are high chances that the Android 10 based Oxygen OS could borrow all the features from the OnePlus 7 Pro. And that means users could enjoy some of the benefits the new Android 10 brings to the table along with some additional stuff that OnePlus throws in to enhance the user experience.

The major change in the user experience will be seen with the new gesture control system that’s new to Android 10 this year. However, OnePlus has tweaked the core gesture system to make it more fluid and consistent with the rest of the OS and apps. We tried it on the OnePlus 7 Pro and it made it easier to use the phone, despite its massive 6.65-inch display. On the OnePlus 7T, we also expect the same benefits given that there are rumours of a bigger display making it to the phone.

Apart from the gesture navigation, the new version of Oxygen OS based on Android 10 will get all the new security and privacy features that will give users more control over their data, apps and location. Users will also be able to get more options for customizing the theme on Oxygen OS. Similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro, the camera app is also expected to offer a super macro mode for taking close-up shots, given that the OnePlus 7T will get a triple camera system similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro.

NASA has rewarded 2.7 billion dollars to Lockheed Martin, the US-based aerospace and security Company for constructing three Orion capsules for Artemis missions III-V. NASA’s first women will be traveling in those missions and a man will travel to the Moon by the year 2024.

The US space organization in plans to order for three more Orion capsules in the year 2022 for the Artemis missions VI-VIII, for a whole sum of $1.9 billion, NASA mentioned in a press report.

“This deal secures Orion production in the next decade, showing NASA’s obligation to building a sustainable experience at the Moon to bring back new information and prepare for sending spacewalkers to Mars,” Jim Bridenstine specified in a declaration.

Days after the government cut corporate tax rate, Maruti Suzuki, the country’s biggest car-maker announced a reduction in prices. Maruti Suzuki has reduced the price of select models by ₹5,000 (on ex-showroom price), effective from today. The price cut will be applicable on all variants of Alto 800, Alto K10, Swift Diesel, Celerio, Baleno Diesel, Ignis, Dzire Diesel, Tour S Diesel, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross, Maruti Suzuki said.

This reduction of price will be over and above the current promotional offers for the company’s vehicle range, Maruti said.

Facing worst sales slowdown in the last two decades, many car-makers have lined up hefty discounts and other offers to lure buyers. The biggest car-maker Maruti Suzuki is offering discounts and other benefits in the range of ₹40,000 to ₹1,01,200 on its popular models, news agency IANS reported.

Welcoming the government’s initiative to revive the demand in automobile industry, Maruti Suzuki India said it has decided to “proactively and voluntarily share the benefits of corporate tax reduction with its customers.”

Maruti Suzuki also said that it is optimistic that the price reduction will bring down the cost of acquisition especially for the entry-level customers. “This announcement around the festive season will help boost customer sentiment and revive the market to create demand,” the car-maker said.

Earlier this week, Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava said that the car-maker expects sales of its cars in September to be higher than the previous month. Domestic sales of Maruti Suzuki fell 34.3% in August, one of the biggest monthly drops in sales in recent times.

The nine-day Navaratri festival, which typically witnesses an uptick in sales, begins on September 29.

Maruti Suzuki will launch its small hatchback — S-Presso — on 30 September, as the company looks to revive sales during Navratri and Diwali on the back of new products. Last month, Maruti had launched XL 6, a multi purpose vehicle, in August that will be sold from the Nexa chain of premium dealerships.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today received the Goalkeepers Global Goals Award for his government’s Swachh Bharat programme. Microsoft founder Bill Gates presented the award to PM Modi at a ceremony on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York City.
Started by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Goalkeepers award seeks to “bring together leaders from around the world to accelerate progress for ending poverty and fighting inequality”, according to the organisers.

“Gandhi ji’s dream for swachhata (cleanliness) is now becoming true,” PM Modi said. “The World Health Organisation has reported that three lakh people have been saved (from diseases) by the campaign… Such as campaign was never heard of,” he said. “Getting the award in the year of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary is personally significant for me. When 130 crore people take a pledge, any challenge can be overcome,” he said.

PM Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission in October 2014 as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. It seeks to improve cleanliness through solid and liquid waste management and making villages open-defecation free.

“Due to lack of toilets, a number of girls had to drop out of schools. Our daughters want to study, but because of lack of toilets, they had to abandon their education midway and sit at home,” he added. “The Swachh Bharat programme has changed this.”

The inaugural Goalkeepers event in 2017 hosted a diverse group of leaders. Speakers, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former US President Barack Obama and activist Malala Yousafzai had attended it.
