Renegades sign Usman Shinwari and Faheem Ashraf

0

Melbourne Renegades have signed the Pakistani duo of Faheem Ashraf and Usman Shinwari for the upcoming season of the Big Bash League.

While the left-arm pacer, Shinwari, will be available for the first seven games of the season for the defending champions, the all-rounder Ashraf will be there for eight matches. They will be replaced by England’s Harry Gurney and Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi respectively for the remainder of the tournament.

While Ashraf will be featuring in his maiden BBL stint, Shinwari was a part of the Renegades’ setup last season as well, where he played seven games and picked up eight wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.14. He also bowled the fastest delivery of the tournament, delivering a ball at 151 km/hr against Melbourne Stars.

Gurney, who will be replacing Shinwari, also featured for Renegades last season and impressed with his speed variations bowling in the death. Nabi, on the other hand, will be returning for his third season of the T20 league. In the two seasons so far, he has played 21 matches, picking 16 wickets and scoring 316 runs.

“I’m pleased with how we’re shaping up,” Michael Klinger, Renegades’ new head coach, said. “Mohammad Nabi and Harry Gurney showed their class last season so we’re glad to have them on board for the second half of the home and away season and hopefully finals.

“After winning a title, the competition for spots in the XI is going to be fierce and we feel we’ve got plenty of options to cover the challenges that we’ll be confronted with throughout the season.”

Jeetan Patel appointed England’s spin bowling consultant

0

Jeetan Patel has been appointed as the spin bowling consultant of the England national men’s team for the tours of South Africa and Sri Lanka, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Wednesday (December 4).

The former New Zealand spinner was a part of the England coaching setup in their recent T20I series against New Zealand. Currently playing for Wellington Firebirds, he has announced his retirement from Cricket Wellington and will play his last match in the Super Smash against Central Stags on December 18. He, however, remains contracted with Warwickshire.

He will rejoin the England team on December 24, ahead of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Centurion. He will continue in his role till the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, which starts in March 2020

Morgan, Knight to lead London Spirits in The Hundred Tournament

0

Eoin Morgan and Heather Knight will lead the London Spirit men’s and women’s team respectively in the inaugural edition of The Hundred in 2020.

The franchise has also appointed Trevor Griffin as the women’s head coach, who in turn announced Heather as the women’s captain.

Knight, called “brilliant cricketer and a natural leader” by Griffin, is most famous for leading England to their fourth Women’s World Cup victory at Lord’s in 2017. She has also led Western Storm to two titles in the Kia Super League, where Griffin was again her coach.

“I’m looking forward to captaining the London Spirit women’s team in The Hundred next year,” Knight said. “With the fresh setup there’s going to be the possibility to have a solid tactical input as a captain and I’m delighted to work that out and also bring collectively a new unit in a new contest.”

Shane Warne, who has already been named the men’s head coach, parallelly announced Morgan as the men’s captain.

“I am over the moon to have Eoin as our captain,” Warne said. “He has had a truly unforgettable year and we all know that he is an outstanding leader. I believe he can give our team the edge in The Hundred.”

Morgan recently led England to their maiden 50-over World Cup triumph and was picked as a local icon player by Warne in the draft. He joins fellow World Cup winners Rory Burns, Mark Wood and Joe Denly at Lord’s.

“As a player and a captain I am always looking for ways to improve and it’s clear from speaking to Shane – who has an amazing cricket brain, about everything from tactics in this new competition to how to get the best from our squad – that this is an exciting opportunity to take cricket forward,” Morgan said.

Kohli reclaims top Test ranking from Steve Smith

0

Virat Kohli has edged ahead of Steve Smith to become the top-ranked batsman in Tests once again. Kohli is now on 928 points, which is five points clear of Smith’s tally.

The Indian skipper hit 136 in the day-night Test against Bangladesh in Kolkata while Smith endured a relatively cold outing in Adelaide, scoring only 36 in Australia’s only innings with the bat.

David Warner’s spic 335 not out sees him gain 12 places and now occupy the fifth spot. Marnus Labuschagne is in the top ten for the first time after being ranked as low as 110th at the start of the year.
Joe Root’s 226 against New Zealand in Hamilton sees him back in the top ten once again. He’s gained four places and is now ranked seventh, behind India’s Ajinkya Rahane.

Among the bowlers, Mitchell Starc has moved up four places to the 14th spot. West Indies captain Jason Holder’s five wickets against Afghanistan in Lucknow have helped him move up one slot to third place, with a career-best 830 rating points. Holder has also consolidated his top position in the all-rounders’ list.

Union Cabinet gives green signal to Citizenship Amendment Bill

0

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is now expected to be tabled in Parliament next week.

“It has been given clearance and will be discussed once it is deferred in Parliament,” Prakash Javadekar stated in the Cabinet guidance.

The Cabinet approval was crucial as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has been strongly advocating a nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The Opposition has staunchly opposed both the Bill and the country-wide NRC.

On Tuesday, Union home minister Amit Shah had met various stakeholders from the northeastern states to understand their concerns over the proposed law.

During the last winter session, the Lok Sabha had passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016. While the Bill awaited passage in the Upper House, it had lapsed after the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha.
Opposition parties are once again likely to push for the Bill to be referred to a select committee before it is discussed in the Upper House.

Meanwhile, Union defense minister Rajnath Singh, during the parliamentary party meeting last week, had warned party’s members of Parliament against absenteeism in the House as the party would likely table the Bill next week.

Govt Not A Postman But A Stakeholder In Appointing Judges: Law Minister

0

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today asserted that the government will not be a postman on the issue of appointment of judges but be a stakeholder and have a say on it.

Mr. Prasad said there is a process while appointing judges of high courts and the Supreme Court and a collegium of senior judges recommends names to the government for appointment of judges.

“In the appointment of judges, we are a stakeholder. We are not a postman and we will have a say,” he said during Question Hour in Parliament.

Responding to a request of Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee, the minister said he would look into the issue of appointment of some more judges in the Calcutta High Court.

Realme to Launch Phones With Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 765G SoCs

0

Realme X50 leaks have been making rounds of the Web recently, and it is set to debut soon as the first 5G phone from the company. While details about the Realme X50 are still under the wraps, Realme has revealed that it will be the first company to launch a phone powered by the freshly-announced Snapdragon 865 flagship SoC.

Additionally, the company also claims that it will also launch the first phone to pack the Snapdragon 765G SoC, Qualcomm’s latest mid-range 5G SoC that was announced alongside the Snapdragon 765 SoC at the ongoing Snapdragon Tech Summit.

Realme‘s Chief Marketing Officer, Xu Qi Chase, said in a Weibo post that “Realme will be the first to carry 865 and 765G” (machine translated). The Realme executive’s words make it abundantly clear that the Oppo-offshoot will be the first company out there to launch phones packing the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC and the mid-range Snapdragon 765G SoC.

The Snapdragon 865 is Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC and will be seen next year in high-end smartphones from a host of smartphone brands. Notably, Xiaomi has already confirmed that it will launch the Mi 10 flagship powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC in Q1 in 2020. Oppo has also announced plans to launch a Snapdragon 865-powered phone in the first quarter of 2020. Realme is yet to reveal the name of its first Snapdragon 865 phone.

As for the Snapdragon 765G, it is a souped-up version of the Snapdragon 765 SoC, offering some extra processing chops for a smoother gaming experience. The in-house analogs for the Snapdragon 765G and Snapdragon 765 duo are the previous generation Snapdragon 730G and the Snapdragon 730 pair. Unfortunately, there is no word on what Realme’s Snapdragon 765G-powered phone will be called and when it will be launched.

“Phew…”, Says Karti Chidambaram After Supreme Court Grants His Father Bail

0

News that Congress leader P Chidambaram is to be released on bail in connection with the INX Media scam case, after spending 106 days in custody, was met with a relieved tweet by his son, Karti Chidambaram.

As part of his bail conditions, Mr. Chidambaram must furnish a bond of Rs 2 lakh, in addition to two sureties. The former Finance Minister also cannot travel without court permission – he had earlier surrendered his passport – and must present himself for questioning as required.

The senior Congress leader also cannot make public statements, give interviews or contact witnesses.

On November 28, the Supreme Court had reserved judgment on an appeal filed by Mr. Chidambaram, who had challenged the November 15 verdict of the Delhi High Court denying him bail in the case.

During the arguments in the top court Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate (ED), had said Mr. Chidambaram continued to wield “substantial influence” on crucial witnesses even from custody.

Senior advocates Kabil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Mr. Chidambaram, told the bench there was no evidence linking their client, either directly or indirectly, to such allegations. They also said there was no material to show he had influenced witnesses or tampered with evidence.

Earlier, after the Delhi High Court turned down his bail, Mr. Chidambaram hit out at the denial.

“The High Court denies me bail saying that releasing me will send a wrong signal as if I am some Ranga Billa,” Kapil Sibal, representing the Congress leader, said on his behalf. Ranga and Billa were hanged in 1982 for the shocking kidnapping and murder of two teenage siblings in Delhi.

Mr. Chidambaram has been accused of creating a web of shell companies and several foreign bank accounts to launder money. He also faces charges of misusing his position as Finance Minister of the country in 2007 while facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram in a separate case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI.

Virat Kohli took to Twitter to share a picture with batsman KL Rahul and all-rounder Shivam Dube ahead of the upcoming three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series against the West Indies on Tuesday. “Hyderabad bound @klrahul11 @IamShivamDube,” Virat Kohli captioned the flight selfie. The first T20I, which was scheduled to take place in Mumbai, was shifted to Hyderabad. The T20I series kicks off on December 6 in Hyderabad while Thiruvananthapuram will host the second T20I. The final game of the series will be played in Mumbai on December 11.

Soon after KL Rahul also tweeted a picture with India captain Virat Kohli and young all-rounder.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced 15-member squads for T20I and ODIs on November 21.

Virat Kohli returned to India’s T20I squad after being rested for the series against Bangladesh. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Shami were also included in the squad for the T20I series.

India’s opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan suffered a knee injury during a Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy game and was ruled out of the T20I series.
The BCCI named Sanju Samson as Dhawan’s replacement for the upcoming series.
For the West Indies, Kieron Pollard will lead the side in the T20I as well as the ODI series against India.
The visitors recently lost a three-match T20I series to Afghanistan in India.

Nokia 5G Phone With Snapdragon 765 SoC, Zeiss Optics Set to Launch Next Year

0

HMD Global is pinning its hopes on 5G to revive the fortunes of its Nokia smartphone division and to achieve that, it is relying on Qualcomm’s freshly announced mid-range 5G-ready SoCs. At the ongoing Snapdragon Tech Summit, the company announced that Nokia will soon launch a 5G phone that will employ the new Snapdragon 765 SoC with an integrated Snapdragon X52 5G modem.

The company also shared a teaser image of its upcoming phone that shows a side-mounted fingerprint, a curved rear panel with a glossy finish, and what appears to be a circular camera module at the back.
The Finnish company’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, took the stage on the first day of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit and revealed that a new Nokia-branded phone powered by the Snapdragon 765 SoC will be launched soon.

The onstage teaser poster of the upcoming phone shows a copper-colored frame and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor below the volume rocker. The silhouette of what appears to be a circular camera module at the back is also visible.

Sarvikas revealed that the upcoming Nokia phone will leverage the in-house Zeiss camera technology that we have already seen on a wide range of premium Nokia-branded phones. Additionally, the phone will employ the PureDisplay technology that offers HDR10 video playback support, and also upscales SDR content to HDR by taking advantage of a dedicated 16-bit engine in real-time. And thanks to the Snapdragon 765 SoC ticking at its heart, the upcoming Nokia phone might also offer 4K HDR video recording support.

While the HMD Global executive did not reveal the name or any further details about the internal hardware of its upcoming phone, it might turn out to be the Nokia 8.2 whose specifications were leaked back in July this year and might go official at the company’s December 5 event in Cairo tomorrow.

P Chidambaram gets bail from Supreme Court in INX Media case

0

P Chidambaram, arrested from his Jor Bagh house in central Delhi in August, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday in the money laundering case linked to the INX Media case.

Economic offenses fall under the category of grave offenses but bail should not be denied in all economic offenses, said Justice AS Bopanna who read out the verdict for the three-judge bench.

The top court’s order implies that the former finance and home minister can soon walk out of Tihar prison. The bench led by Justice R Banumathi, which accepted his appeal for bail on Wednesday in the case probed by the Enforcement Directorate, had earlier in October granted him bail in a related case investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

But Chidambaram cannot leave the country without the permission of the special court trying his case. Justice Bopanna said Chidambaram will also have to cooperate in the investigation and not make any statements to the press relating to the case.

The court order also explicitly mentioned that Chidambaram should not attempt to influence the witnesses or tamper with the evidence.

P Chidambaram has been in custody since his dramatic arrest televised live by a team of Central Bureau of Investigation officers late on August 21. Chidambaram had just addressed a media briefing to declare that he wasn’t in hiding and headed home where CBI officers scaled the wall and whisk him away to the CBI headquarters where he was finally placed under arrest.

He was granted bail by the top court’s bench of three judges on October 22. But by that time, the Enforcement Directorate had arrested him in the money laundering case.

In his arguments for bail, P Chidambaram who was represented by senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi had contended that the serial arrests by the two federal agencies were timed to prolong his incarceration.

Google’s Sundar Pichai Takes Over As CEO Of Parent Firm Alphabet

0

Google co-founder Larry Page is stepping down as CEO of the search giant’s parent company in favor of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, marking a major shift for one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Page and co-founder Sergey Brin will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of Alphabet, the parent company, according to an announcement Tuesday, though they will keep their board seats. Brin was president of Alphabet.

It marks the first time Page won’t have oversight of at least some of the company’s operations. The page has turned over the CEO role once before, in 2001, to Eric Schmidt, but Page took on a product role. He took over Google again 10 years later when Schmidt stepped down.

Pichai inherits sole responsibility for a company buffeted by antitrust investigations and the ire of President Donald Trump. Pichai had already become the public face for the company in recent years, meeting with the president, testifying in Congress and leading Google’s annual developer conference and quarterly investor calls.

Under Pichai, Google has been trying to become more buttoned-up, amid a series of leaks to the media and worker pushback. Pichai often spoke at Google’s weekly all-hands meetings, acknowledging in October that the company was struggling with transparency and with how to deal with internal debate over controversial topics, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by The Washington Post.
In their letter Tuesday, the co-founders seemed to acknowledge the challenges Pichai faces, writing that he will be “accountable” for Google going forward and that they would act more as “proud parents” of the company.

Unlike his Silicon Valley peers at Apple and Facebook, Page has remained largely out of the public in recent years. He stopped attending the company’s weekly all-hands confab and skipped the annual shareholder meeting. One shareholder even confronted board members in June over Page’s disappearing act only to be told that he simply couldn’t make it.

He even scaled back the annual Halloween celebration at his home, replacing prior years’ elaborate displays and full-sized candy with mini-size treats and modest Christmas lights.

In 2013, Page acknowledged a health condition that affected his vocal cords and chronic inflammation of his thyroid. On quarterly earnings conference calls, Page’s voice had sounded raspy.

But Page was active behind the scenes, signing off on millions of dollars in payouts to former officials who were accused of inappropriate relationships while working at Google. Last month, the company’s board hired a law firm and formed a special subcommittee to investigate complaints of sexual misconduct among senior executives.

Brin and Page hold a majority of the company’s voting stock, meaning major board decisions still need their stamp of approval.

The page has been CEO of Alphabet since the holding company was formed in 2015 and Pichai was named Google CEO. Alphabet oversees other divisions including X, from which experimental projects emerge, and several investment arms. The page also has outside interests, such as his flying car startup Kitty Hawk.

Founded by Brin and Page in a garage near Stanford University in 1998, Google has since ballooned to a $900 billion company that has aimed at the near corner of consumer life, from retail sales to autonomous cars to home automation to city planning. It has the world’s most used browser, Chrome, and the most ubiquitous mobile phone software, Android.

But the lifeblood of the firm remains advertising, which accounts for about 85% of sales. The company’s stranglehold on digital ad sales is likely central to antitrust investigations underway at the Justice Department and from nearly every state attorney general in the country.

Despite regulatory concerns over its reach, Alphabet announced nearly $5 billion in acquisitions in recent months, including fitness tracker Fitbit and data analysis firm Looker. The transactions drew sharp criticism from some lawmakers, and the U.K.’s competition watchdog launched a probe into the Looker deal.

More recently, employees have been protesting Google’s workplace conditions and the aims of the company, which include contracts with government agencies and a clandestine attempt to make software available in China, where the company is largely banned.

Four engineers were fired last month for what Google said were violations of its policies on accessing confidential internal files and calendars. But the engineers said it likely had more to do with their activism, which included creating petitions and discussing the possible formation of a union. Google has denied those claims.

Pichai, whom colleagues describe as deliberate and even-keeled, has been at Google since 2004. His work helped grow Android operating software and the Chrome browser before he ascended to the top Google job as part of the company’s restructuring.

“I aspire to be obvious that this transformation won’t change the Alphabet composition or the work we do day to day,” Pichai addressed in a companywide email Tuesday.

Last month, Pichai halted the weekly all-hands meetings, known as TGIF, weeks after the leaked meeting, saying he would no longer field questions about cultural or personnel matters.

West Indies rope in Monty Desai as batting coach

0

Monty Desai has been appointed by West Indies as the batting coach for the men’s team on a two-year contract. Desai served as Canada’s head coach at the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 and as Afghanistan’s batting coach at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in 2018. More recently, he was UAE’s batting coach at the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers.

Desai will join the team ahead of the first of the three T20Is against India, scheduled for Friday (December 6) at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad.

“Let me first thank CWI for this incredible opportunity. I am very excited to join a team with such a rich history in the world cricket arena, one that I grew up admiring,” Desai said on his appointment. “I am very much looking forward to being part of a journey where I can help to create a winning work environment, learn and embrace a new culture, and build a ‘happy dressing room’ tradition alongside other excellent leaders. I am eager to join forces with Head Coach Phil Simmons and Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams, and our captains, such that I may contribute in every possible way to the success of our team.”

Simmons said that he’s looking forward to Desai helping players improve on their talent and perform better.

“I have worked with Monty before and he is an excellent coach. He has proven he can get players to improve on their talent and also to perform better in matches,” Simmons said. “He has a vast knowledge of the game and it is good he is starting here with us in India. I look forward to seeing him work with our batsmen in all formats as we look to get better in all areas.”

West Indies’s team management also includes bowling coach Roddy Estwick and fielding coach Rayon Griffith.

vivo iQOO Neo 855+ variant appears on AnTuTu with 12GB RAM

0

Vivo announced the iQOO Neo 855 back in October and the company is gearing up to launch a Snapdragon 855+ variant soon.

The iQOO Neo 855+ has passed through TENAA and Master Lu revealing its design and specs, and now the smartphone has appeared on AnTuTu corroborating some of those details.

The AnTuTu listing confirms the iQOO Neo 855+ will come with a Snapdragon 855+ SoC, 12GB RAM, and 128GB storage. It will run Android Pie and sport a 1080p display, which according to TENAA will measure 6.38″ diagonally and have a fingerprint reader underneath.

The iQOO Neo 855+ scored 503,734 points in AuTuTu‘s test, which is higher than most other Snapdragon 855 Plus-powered smartphones.

There’s no word from Vivo about the iQOO Neo 855+ yet, but an official announcement shouldn’t be too far since the smartphone has already bagged TENAA certification.

“Could NASA Also Help Us…” RCB jokes As Lander Vikram’s Debris Found

0

As Chennai based engineer Shanmuga Subramanian helped NASA find the debris of Chandrayaan-2’s lander Vikram on Tuesday, Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) came up with a hilarious tweet for the “NASA team”.

Referring to all the cricket balls hit out of the park by their premier batsmen AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, RCB tweeted, “Could the #NASA team that found #VikramLander also help us find the cricket balls hit by ABD & Virat”. After the Vikram Lander was located, the NASA, in a statement credited the Indian engineer and said, “the debris first located by Shanmuga Subramanian about 750 meters northwest of the foremost crash site and was a rare clear pixel identification in that first mosaic”.

https://twitter.com/RCBTweets/status/1201763931125010432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1201763931125010432&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.ndtv.com%2Fipl-2020%2Fafter-chennai-engineer-spots-vikram-lander-rcb-comes-up-with-hilarious-tweet-2142571

The Bengaluru franchise had earlier posted a congratulatory tweet for ISRO after the successful launch of Chandrayaan 2. “Congratulations @isro. Watching #Chandrayan2 take off was a fantastic sight! P.S. We have a special request for you, on behalf of our batsmen,” RCB tweeted.

WhatsApp for Android Version to get battery saver settings for enabling dark mode

0

WhatsApp is actively working on bringing dark mode on to its Android app. In the past year, we have seen several reports that have detailed how the company has redesigned various sections of its social messaging app to support Android 10’s dark theme. Now, a new report details exactly how the Facebook-owned social messaging app is planning to offer the option of implementing the dark mode on their Android smartphones.

According to a new report by WABeta Info, the blog that tracks developments in WhatsApp, Facebook will offer a new Themes section under the Settings menu of the app wherein users will get to pick one of the three options. The Light theme is presumably the way we have been using WhatsApp so far. The Dark theme, as the name suggests, is likely going to be what we hope to see in the app. The third theme option – Set by Battery Saver – is based on your phone’s battery saver setting and it would presumably turn the app dark when the battery level of your phone drop below a certain level.

But there is a catch. The third Set by Battery Saver option, as per the report, will be available in Android phones running on Android 9.0 Pie and older versions of Google’s mobile operating system. Phones running on the newly released Android 10 will get a different System Default option. When enabled this option would automatically set WhatsApp’s theme on your phone based on your system’s theme. This means that if your Android 10 powered phone is working in a dark theme, WhatsApp will be run on your phone in the dark mode.

This feature is available in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.19.353. However, don’t panic if you are unable to see this feature on your phone yet. WhatsApp hasn’t officially rolled out the dark theme on to its Android app yet and the company hasn’t detailed a timeline as to when users will be seeing this feature on their smartphones either. However, with the pace of things, it shouldn’t be long before the company formally announces the update to its users.

“Jofra will learn a huge amount from the series”: Joe Root

0

England captain Joe Root has backed Jofra Archer to bounce back from a disappointing first overseas tour. Archer claimed just two wickets in three innings in New Zealand as he struggled to come to terms with the Kookaburra ball and two extremely flat pitches.

After a barnstorming introduction to international cricket during the home summer, this series has been the first real setback of Archer’s England career. Throughout the two Tests, his speeds were generally down on those he produced during the Ashes series and after the first match at Bay Oval, Root said there were times when the 24-year-old needed to “unleash” a little more.

“I think he’ll learn a huge amount from this, I do,” Root said after the second Test in Hamilton. “He’s an extremely exciting talent and he’s got so much to offer Test cricket and this team and I’m sure it won’t be long till we see him tear it up again.

“I think he’s found out there are several ways you’ve got to be able to operate and you’ve got to show real resilience sometimes when it does get quite flat and keep putting in time and time again, which he did.

I’m sure he’ll learn very quickly and I’m pretty confident we’ll get the best out of him soon.”
Archer would have had more joy on the final day of the series had Joe Denly not dropped a sitter off New Zealand captain Kane Williamson at midwicket after Archer had deceived the batsman by bowling the delivery without using his front arm. The drop rather summed up Archer’s tour but also hinted at the sort of skillful variation he has at his disposal and which England’s bowlers need more of in their quest to take 20 wickets.

“He showed a great amount of variety in trying to take wickets and produce an opportunity,” Root said. “Bowling with no front arm, bowling his knuckleballs, a couple of leg-cutters and a quick bouncer now and again to change the pace. It shows he’s got all the skills that are there, it’s now just putting it all together. I’m sure he’ll learn very quickly and I’m pretty confident we’ll get the best out of him soon.”

Overall, the series defeat was a disappointment for England who was decidedly poor in the first Test but improved in the second. There were several positives on the batting front with Rory Burns and Ollie Pope performing well in Hamilton alongside Root, whose double hundred at Seddon Park was an emphatic return to form. With four cheap wickets, all-rounder Chris Woakes’ return to the side was successful too. But despite useful performances, this was yet another defeat for England away from home. They have won just two of their last 12 overseas Test series.

“I think we learned a lot about the group,” Root told Sky Sports. “Obviously the ideal scenario is performed extremely well, and come away with a 2-0 series win, so it’s not worked out how we would have liked, but [for South Africa] we’ve now seen what it can be like if the surfaces do get like this with the Kookaburra ball. And like we did at Mount Maunganui, we have to learn very quickly and take that forward into those four games.

“You’ve got to learn from the opposition as well. You look at someone like Neil Wagner – he’s got a big heart, a big engine, and keeps running. And that’s what you want, you want guys who, time and time again, want to be putting themselves in that position, to keep wanting to create chances and keep trying to change the game.”

England’s thoughts now turn to a four-Test rubber in South Africa which begins at Centurion on Boxing Day. The squad for that series is expected to be announced next week and there are some players with claims to return to the squad. Fast bowlers James Anderson and Mark Wood are back to full fitness while Jonny Bairstow will also be considered for a recall. All three are currently in South Africa at a training camp. Moeen Ali is another who was not in New Zealand after taking a break from the Test game although it remains to be seen whether he is yet ready to return to red-ball duty.

Boult, de Grandhomme’s recovery on track for Australia tour: Stead

0

New Zealand coach Gary Stead has said it’s likely that the team will look at replacements for Trent Boult and Colin de Grandhomme, both of whom are recovering from injuries ahead of the three-match tour of Australia, but remained “quietly optimistic” that the duo will get fit in time.

“I don’t know if I’m confident, but I’m quietly optimistic they’re tracking where we want them to be,” Stead said. “But it’s a long way to go if we know they’re not going to play, so we’d likely look at replacements.”
New Zealand played Matt Henry and Daryl Mitchell for Boult and de Grandhomme respectively against England in Hamilton, and also have Lockie Ferguson waiting in the wings for a chance in the Test arena.

Both Boult and de Grandhomme suffered muscle injuries in the first Test in Mount Maunganui, which the hosts won by an innings and 65 runs. Boult was only able to bowl one over on the final day and walked off the field after experiencing pain on the right side of his ribs. De Grandhomme, on the other hand, suffered a tear to his left lower abdominal muscle.

“Both Colin and Trent are progressing well, which is encouraging for us,” Stead said. “Colin could have kept bowling through the last Test so he’s probably just a little more advanced. But Trent rocked up well today.

“Both have rolled their arm over at a very low level in the last two days. But both are going to have to prove their fitness a couple of days out from the first Test and bowl a decent spell of 10-12 overs at least over two or three spells.”

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson lauded his team’s progress in this two-match series and looked forward to the “tough” tour of Australia.

“We have a lot of big cricket coming up over ‘The Ditch’ (Tasman Sea) and it will be a tough challenge, but a couple of good matches for us,” he said. “We always know that going over there will be tough. We must keep playing what is in front of us. That was a positive (outcome) in these two matches.”

The first Test, which starts on December 12, is a day-night affair in Perth but isn’t preceded by any pink-ball practice game.

“It’s just another thing to adapt to,” Williamson reflected on the tight scheduling. “Such is the international schedule. We fly out in a couple of days, have a bit of training and we’re straight into another match. So it is quite a quick turnaround.

“The conditions – the surfaces – are quite different. They will bounce a bit more. This was a brilliant series win for us, but we’re going to have to adapt quickly. We know it’s tough – a lot of the guys have been there before – and we know they’re very strong, clinical in their own [backyard]. We’ll look forward to the challenge.

Actor Hrithik Roshan, late on Monday, shared a picture of his heart and added a compassionate and loving message with it. The post had his contemporaries and fans applauding him.

The post garnered quite a few appreciative nods, both from his contemporaries and fans. While his fans were in agreement with him with a few commenting that his heart was in ‘healthy’ condition, his colleagues too wrote back. Dia Mirza wrote, “Wowzaaaaa!!! What a beaut,” while Preity Zinta, who worked with Hrithik in Koi… Mil Gaya, Mission Kashmir, and Lakshya too left a bunch of ‘clapping hands’ emojis on the post.

2019 has been a stupendous year for Hrithik with two of his films — Super 30 and War — hitting the bull’s-eye. In Super 30, he played a math wizard who inspires and coaches a bunch of underprivileged children to crack the elite IIT examination. Super 30 is based on the life of Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar, who trains 30 deserving, economically-backward students for IIT-JEE entrance exams every year with a high success rate.

In War, he played a RAW agent, who goes rogue. The film pitted him against the much younger, Tiger Shroff. The film has since made more than Rs 300 crore in collections. The film was a typical masala flick with jaw-dropping action sequences. The film was lapped up for its star worth and action, so much so that even actor Deepika Padukone reacted to Hrithik’s presence in the film. She wrote on Twitter that Hrithik was like ‘death by chocolate’ in the film. She wrote: “@iHrithik in WAR is like Death by Chocolate from Corner House!… Just Saying…”

Watching Joe Root bat is like watching paint dry: Fidel Edwards

West Indies pacer Fidel Edwards took a dig at England captain Joe Root for batting “slow” in their must-win 2nd Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

Joe Root shook off poor form as he ended a 14-innings drought for a Test hundred. Root made it special by making it a double hundred and giving England a 101-run lead in the 2nd Test. However, rain played spoilsport and forced an early draw on Day 5 of the Hamilton Test.

Joe Root’s historic double hundred ended in vain as England lost the 2-match series 1-0 in New Zealand.

Root made 226 after which England took early wickets to send New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval back early but the experienced duo of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor added 213 runs and hit a hundred each before rain forced early Stumps on Tuesday.

Root has struggled to get going in 2019 as he has managed just 774 runs in 11 matches at 36.85. The England captain took his time to get going in the Hamilton Test. He made 226 off 441 balls as England took 162.5 overs to post 476 in the 1st innings.

Root may have got the much-needed confidence after his double ton in Hamilton but Fidel Edwards isn’t happy with the way he batted when the team was facing a must-win situation at Seddon Park.
Taking to Twitter, the Hampshire fast bowler said: “Watching @root66 bat is like watching paint #dry how can u be a game down and bat this slow #poor (sic).”

Joe Root though said he is feeling good after hitting form and getting back his rhythm after the daddy hundred in Hamilton.

“Felt pretty good from the start of the innings, was a tricky period at the start. I just tried to get the rhythm back in my batting, few technical things. Thankfully we got into a position where we could force a result,” Joe Root said.
