Pak lose by an innings and 5 Runs Despite after Babar’s Ton against Aus

0

The Gabba remained unbreached as Australia wrapped up a win within four days, kickstarting their summer on a bright note. Pakistan, who made Australia work hard for that win on Sunday (November 24), were bowled out eventually for 355, conceding a win by an innings and 5 runs in Brisbane. This was Pakistan’s fifth consecutive loss away from home, while Australia maintained their unbeaten record at the Gabba, not having lost a Test here since 1988.

Not many would’ve given Pakistan a chance to even drag the game along for as long as they did after having been reduced to 25/3 in the final session, on Saturday. Babar Azam and Shan Masood staged a brave fightback to keep Australia at bay. The hard work was undone this morning as Pakistan lost two wickets in successive overs with Australia inching closer to a win. Little did they know that the actual resistance was to come thereafter.

Babar joined hands with Muhammad Rizwan and kept Pakistan afloat en route a 132-run stand – the fourth-highest sixth-wicket stand against Australia at the Gabba. They kept the runs coming, rotating the strike and were quite positive in intent. They went after Mitchell Starc’s looseners with the old ball as the partnership grew in stature. They, in fact, staged quite the counterattack, finding the boundaries regularly with the ball not doing enough for the pacers. Babar reached a deserved century – his second in Test and first in Australia.

Rizwan took on Lyon with the sweeps and was aggressive in approach to get to his maiden Test fifty. The pair milked the inconsistency of the Australian quicks to hit the line of stumps regularly. Babar was, however, eventually caught in two minds against a flatter one from Lyon, beaten for pace, ending up with a faint edge that was taken sharply by Tim Paine. Rizwan carried on unperturbed, keeping the runs flowing with Yasir Shah, who scored a career-best 42 as Pakistan kept gnawing into the deficit, with the pair adding 79. Rizwan fell short of his maiden Test ton by just 5 runs, flat-batting a short ball to deep backward point. Once the second new ball was taken, it was only a matter of time as Pakistan lost three wickets for just 11 runs for Australia to wrap up the game.

At the start of the day, Australia tightened the noose on Pakistan despite Masood and Babar’s resistance. They were positive against Lyon, keeping him from settling down, using their feet well to attack. While they negated Lyon without much fuss eventually, it was Pat Cummins who struck as Masood’s woes against the short ball continued. He tried to get under and pull one, only managing an edge to Paine.

One brought two again for Australia as Hazlewood was rewarded for his relentless line and lengths with Iftikhar Ahmed’s wicket as Pakistan lost two wickets in the opening hour and blew away a positive start. Rizwan was let-off early on when Paine put down a chance that came down the leg-side. Replays showed it had some glove, contrary to the first thought that it would’ve come off the pad. Rizwan made the let-off count. And his and Babar’s fighting knocks with the lower order ensured Pakistan left with their heads held high, even in defeat.

Brief scores: Pakistan 240 & 355 (Babar Azam 104, Mohammad Rizwan 95; Josh Hazlewood 4-63, Mitchell Starc 3-73) lost to Australia 580 (David Warner 154, Marnus Labuschagne 185; Yasir Shah 4-205, Haris Sohail 2-75) by an innings and 5 runs.

Bangladesh Collapse inside 50 Min, India seal the series 2-0

0

It took India less than an hour to wrap things up on the third day, and register a victory by innings and 46 runs. Umesh Yadav picked up all the three wickets to get his third five-wicket haul as India became the first team to register four consecutive victories by an innings margin.

Bangladesh were stunted by the absence of Mahmudullah, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury and kept their hopes on Mushfiqur Rahim. The senior batsman tried to chance his arm at regular intervals against the pacers, while also trying to shield the lesser batsmen at the other end.

The ploy worked for a while as he moved to 74, and raised hopes of getting India to bat again. But Umesh Yadav, who had struck early by bouncing out Ebadat Hossain, was quick to outsmart Rahim. A slower ball foxed Rahim into giving a tame catch at cover, with Bangladesh closer to the end.

The final moments of the game were a testament to how the series had panned out, with two of India’s pacers locked in a battle to get a five-wicket haul. For Ishant Sharma, there was the added incentive of a ten-wicket match haul as well. The final moments of the match were a battle between the two pacers. It was Umesh who won that, getting Al-Amin Hossain to nick behind and reiterate India’s dominance.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 106 (Shadman Islam 29; Ishant Sharma 5-22) and 195 (Mushfiqur Rahim 74; Umesh Yadav 5-53, Ishant Sharma 4-56) lost to India 347/9 decl. (Virat Kohli 136, Cheteshwar Pujara 55, Ajinkya Rahane 51; Al-Amin Hossain 3-91, Ebadat Hossain 3-91) by an innings and 46 runs.

Ajit Pawar, Scam-Tainted Maharashtra Leader, Back As Deputy CM

0

NCP leader Ajit Pawar sparked alarm, controversy and furious debate in Maharashtra this morning after leading his party in support of the BJP in its bid to retain power in Maharashtra. Mr. Pawar, who was last month named by the Enforcement Directorate in the Rs. 25,000-crore Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank Ltd. the scam was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Seconds earlier the BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, whose government had repeatedly attacked Ajit Pawar over alleged corruption charges, had been sworn in as Chief Minister for a second term.

Ajit Pawar served as Deputy Chief Minister between November 2010 and September 2012 before resigning over allegations of an irrigation scam. “I am just an MLA now. I won’t accept any ministry or post till I am cleared of all allegations,” he said at the time.

The accusations Mr. Pawar faced at the time included granting about 32 contracts within three months worth Rs. 13,500 crores in the state’s Vidarbha region at high rates.
In 2014, soon after taking charge as Chief Minister for the first time, Devendra Fadnavis had sanctioned an investigation against Ajit Pawar by the state anti-corruption bureau.

On being charged by the Enforcement Directorate, just before October polls, Ajit Pawar quit as MLA saying he was “upset that Sharad Pawar (his uncle) had been defamed at his age because of me”.

Enforcement Directorate officials have said cases against as many as 70 NCP leaders, including Ajit Pawar and his uncle, party chief Sharad Pawar, are open and ongoing.
“The case is open and we are preparing our grounds to summon those named in the FIR for questioning and no one will be spared,” an agency official told news agency IANS.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut alleged the BJP had used the corruption cases filed against Ajit Pawar to persuade him to split the party and offer support.
“When (Devendra) Fadnavis was the Chief Minister, he had said his (Ajit Pawar) place is in Arthur Road (jail). Was the ED investigation used to split the party (NCP)? And, will Cabinet meetings happen in Arthur Road jail now,” Mr. Raut asked.

The NCP’s apparent tie-up with the BJP also throws into focus money-laundering cases against party leaders like former Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

Praful Patel had been questioned in connection with a probe into business deals involving national carrier Air India, while Mr. Bhujbal was arrested in March 2016 on charges of misusing his office; he is a former public works department minister.

Ajit Pawar’s elevation to the Deputy Chief Minister’s post also throws a spotlight on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ repeated assertions, made in 2013 and 2014, that the BJP would “never, never, never” have any alliance with the NCP.

“The BJP will never, never, never have any alliance with NCP. Rumors are motivated. We exposed their corruption in assembly. Others were silent,” Mr. Fadnavis tweeted on September 26, 2014.

The inauguration also completed the 27 km Nagole-Hitec City corridor, one of three in the project. The 16-km Ameerpet-LB Nagar line was inaugurated in September last year, while the 30-km stretch between Uppal and Miyapur has been operational since November 2017.

Earlier this week, the metro authorities said that they would soon begin trial runs on Corridor II on the 10-km stretch between Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) to Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) via Parade Grounds. Once completed, the entire metro project would be thrown open to the public.

Akbar owaisi booked for alleged hate speech , after complaint in telangana court

0

Just days after an order by a local court, the Saidabad police in Hyderabad registered a case against All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Owaisi has now been booked under Sections 153(A) (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion), 153(B) (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 506 (Criminal Intimidation) of the IPC.

The case has been registered over alleged inflammatory remarks made by Owaisi at a public meeting on July 23 in Karimnagar town.

On December 22, 2012, Owaisi had addressed a massive rally in (then Andhra Pradesh’s) Nirmal town, He was arrested in January 2013 on charges of hate speech, and granted conditional bail after 40 days in prison.

Earlier this month, the 14th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court had issued orders to the Saidabad police, to investigate a complaint by an advocate associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and register a case and file a status report by December 23.

The advocate had moved court, stating that the police were not investigating his complaint. In his petition, he also sought that Owaisi’s conditional bail be canceled.

Owaisi’s remarks earlier this year had also resulted in a similar complaint being filed in Karimnagar town at the time. The Karimnagar 3-Town police have also booked him under the same sections as the Saidabad police and is investigating the issue.

As a video of the recent speech also went viral, Akbaruddin Owaisi issued a statement on July 26, where he said, “My speech doesn’t constitute any offense; I have not contravened any provision of law.”

Akbaruddin Owaisi is the younger brother of Hyderabad MP and AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi.

Labuschagne’s Ton Keeps Pakistan Out of the Test Match

0

Marnus Labuschagne continued to lead Australia’s rout of Pakistan, cashing in on breaking the barrier of getting to his maiden Test century and extending it to an unbeaten 171 by Tea on Day 3. Runs flowed in the session as Australia consolidated their position in the Test, with a lead of 292, going into the interval on 532 for 5 at the Gabba in Brisbane. Labuschagne did the bulk of the scoring in the session, with the display of a 360-degree game. His inventiveness, ability to pick the lengths skilfully and footwork shone through his knock that spanned 262 deliveries on Saturday (November 23).

As the ball got softer, the spinners were able to get a bit of turn through the session, with part-time spinner Haris Sohail getting the breakthroughs. In-form Matthew Wade played the perfect cameo, attacking from the onset, using his feet well and reached a half-century. He went on to share a swift century stand with Labuschagne before Haris struck against the run of play to pick out a wicket out of nowhere, getting Wade for 60. Done in by the loop, Wade was caught in a territory of uncertainty and ended up with a feather that Mohammed Rizwan pouched.

The ‘keeper then took a sharp catch when Travis Head was strangled down the leg to get a feather as Australia had half its side back in the shed. Although the spinners operated most of the session, Shaheen Afridi and Imran Khan bowled brief spells. Yet, Naseem Shah only bowled the four overs in the day, during which, he picked up his maiden Test wicket.

He was one of the two wickets, alongside Steve Smith to have fallen in the morning session. Pakistan’s bowlers learned their lessons from a deflating second day’s play where Australia scored 313 runs. They straightened their lines and bowled with a lot of discipline early on. The runs dried up, especially to Warner, who bizarrely added just three runs to his overnight score of 151 before he fell just before the end of the first hour.

Labuschagne, though, kept the scoreboard ticking with a fine mix of attack and caution. As fate would have it, it was Naseem who picked up Warner for his maiden Test wicket, for the second time. Only, this time, Naseem didn’t overstep. It was a bouncer that rose into the left-hander, who was caught in a tangle to get a bottom-edge that was pouched by the ‘keeper.

Steve Smith was getting rid of all the anticipation of a shot in the middle and dispatched Yasir Shah for a boundary off his first ball, but had his stumps knocked over. Smith played across the line was done in by flight and the ball dipped on him to knock him over. Yasir then had Labuschagne trapped leg-before for 92, but a review from the batsman showed an inside edge. Thereafter, Labuschagne was unstoppable, with the third day of play belonging to him.

Brief scores: Pakistan 240 (Azhar Ali 39, Shaan Masood 27, Asad Shafiq 76; Mitchell Stars 4-52, Josh Hazlewood 2-46, Pat Cummins 3-60) trail Australia 532/5 (David Warner 154, Joe Burns 97, Marnus Labuschagne 171*; Yasir Shah 2-180, Haris Sohail 2-75) by 292 runs.

Watling’s Hundred headlines as New Zealand Takes a Lead of 41

0

BJ Watling compiled a gutsy unbeaten 119 to script a stunning turnaround as New Zealand edged ahead on Day 3 of the opening Test against England in Bay Oval. The home side ended the day at 394/6, in front of 41.

In complete contrast to how the day ended, New Zealand began the day finding themselves in some trouble at 144 for 4. However, Henry Nicholls and Watling stonewalled England’s plans and shared a vital stand of 70 for the fifth wicket. Nicholls had a narrow escape when he has adjudged LBW off Jack Leach. The southpaw decided to take the review and the Hawkeye showed the impact was outside the line of off-stump and the decision was reversed.

In an attempt to break the stand, Root rotated the bowler and eventually, brought himself into the attack. He could have got the prized scalp of Watling but Ben Stokes put down a relatively simple chance by his standards at slip, and that dropped chance proved to be very costly in the end. Root, though, had the consolation of dismissing Nicholls in the same over LBW.

Once Nicholls was dismissed, Colin de Grandhomme joined forces with Watling to share a game-changing 119-run stand. De Grandhomme blended caution with aggression – driving Sam Curran and Stuart Broad to the boundary hoardings. He also cracked a top-edged pull of Jofra Archer that went all the way. Archer, on his part, upped his pace and consistently bowled more than 90mph in that spell, but it wasn’t going to be his day, especially concerning three reviews that went against him. Alongside troubling de Grandhomme with the short one, he also nailed the yorker to Watling, but the duo negated his threat and took the hosts to Tea.

Right after the Tea break, Dominic Sibley took a screamer at gully to send de Grandhomme back to the hut and give England a lift. However, England’s joy was short-lived as Santner joined hands with Watling to share one more game-turning unbeaten fifty-plus stand. During the stand, Watling also reached a well-deserved ton. The hallmark of his innings has been his impeccable judgment in the corridor of uncertainty.

At the fag end of the day, Archer won an LBW appeal against Watling with the nip-backer, only for the wicketkeeper-batsman to place his belief in the review and the HotSpot to indicate there was an edge. It was one of those days where Archer didn’t have anything going for him, while the home side would be delighted with the turnaround.

The track is showing some signs of wear and tear, and New Zealand from here would fancy their chances of winning the Test.

Brief scores: England 353 (Ben Stokes 91, Joe Denly 74; Tim Southee 4-88, Colin de Grandhomme 2-41) trail New Zealand 394/6 (BJ Watling 119*, Colin de Grandhomme 79; Sam Curran 2-74) by 41 runs.

Ishant fifer, Kohli-Pujara stand give India Day 1 of the Pink Ball Test

0

The start of India’s first day-night Test had its share of pomp and flourish. The Chief Minister of West Bengal accompanied the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, along with Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. Over 40,000 people turned up at Eden Gardens to witness the occasion. But while all this fanfare was quite unlike the build-up for a Test match in India in recent times, little changed on the field. There, Bangladesh fell prey to India’s pace menace yet again, as Ishant Sharma picked up his second five-wicket haul in India. And with half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, India ended the first day on a commanding note.

The pink ball, subject of much discussion ahead of the game, came into its own during the first session. The ball proved to be skiddier and more ‘swingy’ than its red counterpart. The swing, coming in late in the ball’s path, tested India’s wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha seemingly more than it posed questions to the batsmen. But there was enough of it to keep both the bowlers and batsmen in a mode of understanding. India’s pacers rarely went upwards of 140kph, trying hard to control the movement on offer, and the batsmen were left studying what’s happening.

But through this period of consideration, India produced moments of brilliance. Ishant started it off with a classic ‘one-two’ to trap Imrul Kayes LBW. Umesh Yadav started his second spell with two wickets in his first three balls which included a brilliant one-handed catch by Rohit Sharma at second slip to send back skipper Mominul Haque. Mohammed Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim were seemingly hurried on by the skiddy nature of the ball and were bowled chopping on, leaving Bangladesh in tatters at 26 for 4. Saha then pouched two more catches, the second of which was a stunning diving one to his right, as Bangladesh slipped from bad to worse.

The session ended on a wary note after Liton Das retiring hurt after showing delayed signs of discomfort after being hit on the helmet by Shami. He was later substituted by Mehidy Hasan. Bangladesh would add just 33 more in the second session before being bowled out. In the twilight period, Shami hit another batsman, Nayeem Hasan (who was later replaced by Taijul Islam) as sighting the ball seemingly became a difficult task. Bangladesh’s tailenders were showing little resolve to get behind the line of the ball in this session and became ideal targets for Ishant’s ploys. Operating with the stumps as target, and getting the ball to move both ways off the surface, Ishant added three quick wickets to finish with 5/22, only his second five-wicket haul on home soil.

India’s reply, coming with the floodlights taking full effect, began on a false note with Mayank Agarwal steering Al-Amin Hossain to gully for 14. His partner, Rohit Sharma, dropped on 12, couldn’t make the reprieve count, adding only nine more before shouldering arms to a delivery nipping back in to be adjudged LBW.

However, Kohli and Pujara steadied India with a confident stand that was studded by some eye-popping drives from the India captain. Pujara too got into his own, with Bangladesh guilty of offering boundary-balls at regular intervals. Their 94-run stand for the third wicket gave India a handy lead before Pujara was muscled out by a rising delivery from Ebadot Hossain.

However, with Kohli remaining unbeaten on 59 at Stumps, India looks well set to gain a sizable advantage in the first innings.

Brief ScoresBangladesh 106 (Shadman Islam 29; Ishant Sharma 5-22)trail India 174/3 (Virat Kohli 59*, Cheteshwar Pujara 55; Ebadot Hossain 2-61) by 68 runs.
